Dolphins fall to 0-3, lose to Cowboys 31-6. However, all is not wrong in Miami

There’s hope. While there are many things compromised by the deep roster purge, there are glimmers of hope. The first half of this game it wasn’t that obvious which team had just emptied its roster and which team was probably a contender to be the best team in their conference. The Miami Dolphins actually had an edge in T.O.P. in the first half, 16:11 to 13:49. The first drive looked nice yet K Jason Sanders failed to convert the FG to give the Dolphins their first lead of the season. Despite the fact that we didn’t score, it was evident this team had a different feel with QB Josh Rosen at the helm instead of Ryan Fitzpatrick. There was confidence, aggressiveness, and in general there was life in this offense.

The defense wasn’t especially strong, but in the first half they were in the game. There’s still no pass rush, and we don’t look great against the run, but the Cowboys high powered offense was held in check in the first half. You want depressing? This kills me by the way. I know it’s early in the season, but here are the 3 sack leaders on our team. All newcomers, John Jenkins, Vince Biegel and now Taco Charlton who has played only one game are all tied with a grand total of 1 sack! Not one Dolphins defender who was here last year or longer has a sack. That’s ugly. I guess I was wrong about Taco, he’s better than what we got (Ugh!).

DeVante Parker still remains the enigma he’s always been. He’ll make the wonderful contested catch with a very low chance of success, and then run an easy crossing route with no defender within 5 yards and allow an easy floater to go right through his hands. That could have been a TD. Preston Williams seems to have passed him on the reliability chart and it seems that Rosen and Williams have good rhythm between them. Jakeem Grant was extremely amped up to play in front of his home crowd in Texas and his hands were even more amped up, dropping not only another punt but a couple of passes too. How much longer does Grant get to field punts? That should be a legitimate question.

It’s only 3 games, but I can’t think of one guy on our defense who has been impressive. What happened to our LB’s Jerome Baker and Raekwon McMillan? They have been quieted to the point you forget they’re there. Sam Eguavoen who made lots of noise in preseason has come back down to earth. Yesterday was different, the Cowboys made our best defender Xavien Howard look like Eric Rowe for a game. They picked on X all game and were successful doing so. This is one X would like to forget, but I’m sure Rowe was thankful to have the pressure off him for 1 week. To be fair, Eguavoen led the team in tackles yesterday, but there hasn’t been an impact play all season. I’m wondering if Christian Wilkins blew his load trying to body bump Roger Goodell at the draft because he hasn’t been seen nor heard from since. It’s still early though so I’m far from panicking about him. Charles Harris though, oh boy . . .

I laugh to think how many discussions we’ve had here about which RB is better suited to be the feature back here in MIA. I’m pretty sure after 3 games that we haven’t seen him get regular playing time, because it’s clearly not either Kenyan Drake or Kalen Ballage. While Drake has the runaway speed he’s too much of a finesse runner. While Ballage has the size he’s too much Sta Puft for me. He goes down as soon as he sees the graham crackers coming. Also, both are supposed to be good receivers out of the backfield and this season they just keep dropping the ball. I think it’s just a matter of time before we see more of Mark Walton and Myles Gaskin. We’ve also been economical with our use of FB Chandler Cox and I’d like to see that change too.

Rosen is the reason. If you’re tuning in this year, you’re probably watching to see how the young QB fares, or you’re a masochist, either one. I think he brings lots of promise. I’m not sure if he can be an elite QB but he looks like he belongs on the playing field and his arm talent might be the best since good ole Danny boy. Granted, that isn’t saying all that much, you’ve seen the list of QB’s that have been here since ’99, it’s fugly! I said I wanted improvement every week, and although on the scoreboard it was just a tiny increment better, I know we were competitive, we could have been ahead. The 2nd half things unraveled, but when you’re looking for positives, you have to take them where you can find them. Maybe by season’s end we can put 2 halves together and play a solid game the whole way.

GO DOLPHINS!!

    From the Gase article above:

Gase and his apologists have scurried for excuses for Gang Green’s 0-3 start. But the truth stings. His offense ranks dead last in scoring, total yards, yards per play, passing yards and first downs per game. The Jets are 31st in third-down offense, 28th in rushing and 29th in yards per rush attempt.

I thought the Dolphins were the worst and most ineffectual offense in the league this year. Good to know we are not the worst. (Eye Roll)

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We should probably take a look at WR Gary Jennings. At the very least, he could give Jakeem Grant competition as a PR, and lord knows he needs that. Can’t keep dropping punts. It’s hard enough sometimes for this defense to get off the field, to muff a punt and put them back on is the worst.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

My brain read that as Greg Jennings and I thought “didn’t he retire after one poor season with us back in 2015?” Then I saw you actually wrote Gary Jennings, whom I don’t know.

        Her saga is great too and I really enjoyed it, but for just love of character I would have to rank them as follows;

        Jimmy the Hand – Feist
        Garion / Belgarion – Eddings
        Matt Cauthon – Jordan

Garion / Belgarion is very juvanile but so was I when I first picked it up and I became very attached to him. (if you can be attached to a fictional character)

Look im all for people being happy ith themselves but i am just sad to see people going on a long an impossible journey to finding happiness when they could find it as who they actually are instead of being “fluid” or non-identifying or identifying as something that genetically they are not. Its time in my opinion to stop going with the illness and start looking at treating it. This has nothing to do with Gay/lesbian, etc either, because i see that as something completely different. To me its something about attraction and not identification, and something that actually makes some sense and doesn’t scream identity disorder and depression.

But those are old buildings that aren’t designed for anything but tiny bathrooms the same way you have bathrooms in your home

I imagine it’s different in a modern building and that a it’s frustrating to accommodate everyone’s indenture beyond basic men’s and women’s rooms

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • D's avatar D says:

Everyone is scared to be ostracized for saying, look this isn’t right, it doesn’t make sense and it worries me that emotionally its a cry for help. I dont want people to be pinned down by labels, but i also dont want them taking on a problem thats not the real problems. The real problem is what must you identify as non-identifying just to feel normal. Why is your self worth and happiness wrapped up in not identifying as who you are and how you were born. I put this on parents too, because no 8 year old is gender fluid, parents are making that decision and its because of their strong feelings on being hip to the times, or just running to a solution that fits their beliefs instead of looking deeper at the issue and what other alternatives there might be to helping their child.

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    D,
I don’t know if it’s more prevalent in California than other places, but I think it’s become much more than a mental health issue or emotional cries for help. I think originally the people that felt this way have/had actual identity issues tied to mental health, but it has morphed into more than that.
As the father of a teen who has a bunch of friends doing this gender neutral/gender fluid/ gender swapping stuff, and the father of a 20 something who also has a bunch of friends and a girlfriend doing it, I think it’s kind of a new way to rebel against societal norms. It’s a new counter-culture movement of the age, maybe similar to the counter-culture movement of the 60’s, ‘normal’ people are like WTF? I know I don’t understand this crap at all, but I see more and more kids doing this stuff, and in my mind I figure “ok, you’ll screw around with it for a few years, then get bored with it and move on with regular life.”

It’s not an exaggeration, my youngest daughter had 5 friends who now want to be called by male names, and have changed their look. My daughter just kind of rolled with it, and told us it was all over the school. One of them changed their name 3 times. I’m like “dude, I’ve know you as Maya for 8 years, then you were Vincent, and now you’re Gabe. How the hell am I supposed to keep up?”
My 24 Y/O son has a girlfriend he’s been with since sophomore year in high school, now in the last year calls herself gender fluid. She still dresses mostly like a girl, goes by her name, and nothing seems to have changed, but she is ‘exploring her sexuality’ (they have an open relationship) and she doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into societal norms for women. She has a full time job, goes to college, is a great person, and is a regular functioning member of society.

My wife and I struggle with this whole movement, because I’m a big believer in the idea that it doesn’t cost me anything to try to address you the way you want to be addressed, and to try to respect your own view of yourself, but it’s also hard for me to suddenly see you as a different person and to remember your name from week to week. Maybe you should just wear a name tag or something.

My overall point is most of the younger people I know and interact with that ‘identify’ as something different than standard are not emotionally troubled, trouble makers, or outliers. They seem to be pretty normal in all other ways. I just think it’s a multitude of reasons for this stuff, and these younger generations that are pushing these boundaries are going to keep pushing it. It’s not going away. So over the last couple of years, I’ve been trying my best to come to terms with it and find some sort of understanding, lol.

    • D's avatar D says:

If thats the case, if its counter-culture type of a movement, i think we should be addressing it as such and not propping it up as a real thing. Im not concerned with adaptation because like you said, i dont really have a problem with it as far as functionality of addressing someone as what they want to. My issue is that int he case of those that truly feel so down on who they are, that they have to make up a new identity for themselves, then i want their emotional issues addressed, because that depression and identity issue will follow them no matter what they identify as.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That’s the thing. I don’t think that a lot of these people are ‘so down on who they are’ (again this is just in my experience so far).

For some people it’s an identity crisis, and they have emotional issues, etc. but of the kids I’ve met through my own children, I would only put 2 in that category. The rest IMO are making these changes like you or I might change a shirt. It’s the new way to express yourself. Who are we to say they can’t?

The whole thing is stupid in my book. I’m proud to be a man. I honestly don’t get it, but I don’t understand a guy wanting to have sex with another guy either. I don’t need to understand it. It just isn’t my business to try and tell them what they need.

        JMHO Cheers 🙂

D, not to completely dispute what you are saying, because personally I don’t / can’t understand it, but my cousin when she was 5 years old told her parents that God had made a mistake and that she was supposed to be a boy. Naturally this disturbed my aunt & uncle and they sought counselling for her because no “normal” kid would feel that way. Years of counselling later her feelings just got deeper that she was not a woman. At 26 years old (4 years ago) she went through gender re-assignment surgery and now she is a he. He is totally unrecognizable as a man. Has grown a mustache and is masculine looking.

I still (secretly within the family) am upset? Disappointed? I can’t think of the right word, because she was just BEAUTIFUL as a girl / woman. Like model stunningly beautiful and now he is a dorky looking guy.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Oh, I forgot to mention. He / She identified as a GAY guy because she always did and still does like guys. SMH.

    • D's avatar D says:

First i believe there are exceptions to all rules, so i dont dispute there may be one-offs but the large majority i think fall into either the category that Kong is suggestion or the one i am suggestion. Im also not suggest that psychologically “fix” them, but treat any unresolved emotional or mental issues so they they have a clean slate to make a decision off of. I mean after all we do have hermaphrodites, but thats really very rare and different in the sense that genetically they are identifiable by having a different genetic structure than either a normal man or woman. This can also mean they produce different amounts of different hormones which does lead to the inability to identify. Again, different from your Cousin doesn’t actually fit here, and her parents dont fit with what i was saying before either, but there are a scary number of parents that seem to jump on that when they should probably dig a little deeper before making what could be a life altering decision and also not fix the core issue.

Just read about a study where they said that if we would eat beans and not beef we would reduce greenhouse gas by 30%. So im reading this and they have all this mathematical proof, ie produce x amount of soybeans and other feed that yields x amount of beef, and the protein yield from the beans doesn’t equal out the gain from red meat, blah blah blah. Incidentally its not just protein that red meat supplies its amino acids , etc that also are needed, but i digress. Anyways, was a nice mathematical model i admit but there is a major flaw in their statistical research. Piggy should know this one right off…. There was no accounting for the increase in greenhouse emission by human being who are eating enough beans to equal out the protein acquired through beef lol. I mean thats gonna be one gassy human population lol.

CHARGERS AT DOLPHINS: I REALLY WANTED to go with Miami, especially when the spread opened at 16 1/2 points. But, since then, a few things have changed.
#1 Weather forecast. I was hoping for a steaming hot Sunday in Miami Gardens, kinda like the 92-93 degree Sunday they’re predicting for Tampa. Instead, the new forecast calls for a high of 87 with a mild breeze. NO FRYING EGGS at the 50-yard line in Miami this weekend. TOO BAD because teams flying from California to Florida playing in mid-90’s temps, historically, don’t do too well.
#2 MIAMI’S O-LINE will be shuffled to deal with injuries. This O-Line may be one more injury away from being in deep do-do. It won’t be as good as it was at the start of the Dallas game. Bad news, potentially, for ROSEN.
#3 MIAMI’s woes defending the running game continue. The Dolphins have been run on a league high 115 times resulting in a league worst 6 touchdowns surrendered on the ground while giving up 5.43 yards per carry. DON’T be surprised if Austin Ekeler rushes for over 100 yards on Sunday.
#4 THE DROPSIES!! Fin receivers dropped 2 likely touchdown passes in Dallas. That couldn’t possibly happen, again, right??? Are #11 and #19 going to play?? Probably. Could they drop 3 touchdown passes??
#5 NO KIKO!!! The last ime these two teams met, Miami’s Kiko Alonso correctly diagnosed a pass from Rivers and returned it for the winning touchdown! Now, KIKO’s been replaced by a group of linebackers who have struggled. I expect Rivers to add to his Hall of Fame resume against Miami this Sunday. Say 250 yards passing and a couple of touchdowns.
#6 THE SPREAD HAS DROPPED FROM 16 1/2 to 15 1/2 points. At the higher number I was seriously considering taking Miami. But, at 15 1/2, I’ll predict:
    CHARGERS –33
    DOLPHINS —17
The “TANK FOR TUA” advocates will be pleased (I’m NOT one of them.) However, unlike Miami’s first three games, I WILL NOT be surprised if the Dolphins cover the spread. The O-Line’s ability to protect ROSEN will be the biggest factor. For ALL four quarters!

I was a portable X-Ray tech back in those days at the burn treatment center at Ft. Sam Houston’s Brook Medical Center. These American G.I.’s were in dire condition for the most part when I saw them. Diagnostic X-Rays played an important role in their recovery (and most of them DID RECOVER!) But, to put it mildly, this wasn’t a job everybody wanted to do. The team at Brook saved thousands of American lives during the long duration of the Vietnam War. I am very proud to have played a small role in that process.

What I have appreciated from Rosen so far is that he seems to change the arc on the ball well for the occasion. Sometimes you need to throw a laser, sometimes you need to throw a rainbow. He seems to be able to adjust this arc as he needs to pretty well. Other “strong arm” guys seem to throw ropes all the time.

  47. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just catching up on the AB situation. Probably gonna take a while to settle it all out, but it is looking like the Pats will have to pay him his $9 mil signing bonus. If Brown withheld info about what was coming on all the sexual assault stuff, that could have voided his right to the signing bonus right then and there, but the Pats played him after the civil rape suit was filed.

And that means they essentially waived the right to say the contract was void. So sounds like will end up the Pats will pay Brown $9 mil for that one game against the Phins.

Overthecap says that James’ injury is affecting our compensation. They have us downgraded from a 3rd to a 4th for james right now and have us with a 5th for Wake. So according to them we will get a 4th and 5th for 2020 comp picks. They did have us as one of the very top 4ths, though thats not very exciting lol.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I thought injury couldn’t effect the pick. Isn’t it based on who you let go vs who you signed to replace and about the contracts?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought the same SB. I think it’s the contract he was given, and that he was going to be a starter. I don’t think injury changes that at all

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        Well, maybe not . . .

“Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula developed by the NFL Management Council based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.”

        https://operations.nfl.com/updates/football-ops/2019-nfl-compensatory-draft-picks/

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

From what I read when looked into it the compensation value for a given player is almost exclusively based on performance the year before and the contract signed. That does not mean you get that, just what is thrown into the weigh and balance of the thing. Same time what all seem to agree on is that the exact formula is secret…. so who knows?

      • D's avatar D says:

Its weighted towards contract, but all of that is in play. I usually trust Overthecap, so if they say they say it will affect it, i believe them.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — I didn’t read what you did. Just going off what have read before. Have a link?

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – So then you believe the performance, playing time etc is from the year previous to being let go? That would and could make sense which would make whatever happened this year except for his contract irrelevant. Right?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That was my take from only reading a couple articles. I’m far from an expert on this, but least that it was some people who are thought. But back to the formula is secret. Even those guys don’t know if includes like on IR after the first play.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I can’t say for sure, but it sure makes sense if you think about it. You’re being compensated for something. What you’re being compensated for is the value of the player that played for your team. Then, part of that formula is the perceived value of another NFL team that offers him the contract. The higher the contract, the higher the perceived value of the player and then the higher value of the pick. I don’t think it matters what he does for the other team, you’re being compensated for the player you lost. Make sense?

Guard/tackle Jesse Davis is among five Dolphins players listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week.

Davis, who sustained an elbow injury against Dallas last Sunday, was limited in practice all week.

Also listed as questionable were safety Reshad Jones (ankle) and wide receiver Albert Wilson (hip/calf), who also were limited in practice all week.

The only two players the Dolphins ruled out for the game against the Los Angeles Chargers were wide receiver Allen Hurns (concussion) and cornerback Jomal Wiltz (groin).

    • D's avatar D says:

This is why the language in a contract needs to be very clear and thurough. If the Pats were at all worried, they should have put clauses in to protect themselves, and if they didnt, well this is the price you pay for being stupid.

You could see it from a mile away that te Pats were going to pick him up, and its even still suspicious that they might have been colluding with him to be picked up. I think the reason a lot of this isnt being fought very hard is that they dont want a deeper investigation into all this. They got taken, plain and simple and it makes me feel almost righteous thinking it might have been karma from them colluding that they find themselves in this place.

    ——————
JMO, my friend, but I DO believe that the soul exists… in each and every one of us. I can’t prove it anymore than I can disprove it, but I had a near-death experience: I was sent back, to a friend pounding on my chest to resuscitate my heart and breathing back in ’95. Our Creator spoke to me while I was all but dead, telling me that I was not ready to pass on.

Take it for whatever it may be worth to ya, Krishna. I’m truly saddened by your loss, buddy. I’m praying for you to find inner peace, and please know that you’ve many friends here to talk to. I think I speak for ALL of us here in saying that we’ve got your back. And if you’d like to speak privately to anyone via email, just ask: any of us would kindly oblige that request, SIR. Much love, respect, and positive vibes to ya, Krishna.
