Winless season continues, Dolphins now 0-4 heading into BYE week.

Things started off promising against the Chargers. After 3 games, in our 4th game we finally secured our first lead of the season. It was short lived however, and although we were competitive, the most competitive half to date, we still trailed after the 1st half 17-10. That didn’t bother me at all. I felt like we were in this game. The 2nd half told a different story than the first half, a more familiar story really, one in which we were basically over matched. Whatever positives we gleaned from the first half were washed away by an ineffective offense and a defense that just couldn’t hang in there as the T.O.P. swung completely in the Chargers favor. In the 1st half, we allowed the Chargers a 3 minute differential in keeping the ball. In the 2nd half, the Chargers practically had the ball the entire 2nd half, 21:05 to the Dolphins measly 8:55. That says it all.

The positives I took from the game is that if you give Josh Rosen a semblance of protection, he looks more than adequate. The 34 yard strike to WR DeVante Parker was a thing of beauty. The pass was thrown with the right amount of pace and was accurate and in stride and it looked easy. Don’t take that for granted, we’ve seen that exact scenario gone wrong so many times in the last 2 decades. What I like about Rosen is he can throw the ball some mustard when he has to, but he’s also capable of lofting a pass with a little arc and make it a much more catchable ball, like he did to Parker. Unfortunately, that was to be our only TD of the game. I mentioned in the last article, Kalen Ballage isn’t cutting it. He’s not a forceful runner, and worse, his hands out of the backfield are totally unreliable. Our version of the Cards David Johnson he will never, ever be.

Drake had a better game but I still don’t see anything that screams we need to keep him on the roster, and that’s basically what this season has become, a virtual tryout for next season and beyond. This stripped down roster will have even more players removed going into next season, so if Drake wants to make sure he’s here in 2020, he’s going to have to more than he’s currently doing. I’d say the number of players I think are a lock to make this team number less than 20. I’m hoping that number climbs as the season goes on. I’m sure some of you will argue with this, and I’m being kind with a couple of these, but these are the guys I believe that deserve to come back next season (some are also on the list due to potential). Josh Rosen, Michael Deiter, Evan Boehm, Preston Williams, Davon Godchaux, Christian Wilkins, Taco Charlton, Jerome Baker, Matt Haack, Raekwon McMillan and Sam Eguavoen. Not all of these are starters, but in my opinion deserve to be back up to this point.

Philip Rivers only missed on 6 passes. He was 24-30 for and easy 310 yards spread out to 8 different receivers. He was sacked only once (thanks to Taco!). He had an easy day out there, he really did. The Chargers didn’t need Melvin Gordon as Rivers had easy pickins all day long. Little pressure and poor coverage, many times due to not applying enough pressure gave Rivers and the Chargers an easy 2nd half. RB Austin Ekeler gave the Bolts over 120 combined yards, almost equally distributed through the run and pass game, 60 rushing, 62 receiving. He found his favorite target Keenan Allen only 5 times, but spread the ball around so well we couldn’t defend it. We are abysmal both at defending the run and pass, and when our offense can’t stay on the field, it gets worse and worse as the game goes on. All too familiar for us Dolphins fans, we’ve seen this script now for all too long and far too many times.

This the BYE week, which will undoubtedly provide us with Sonny’s Bi-Week babe. I look forward to it, and I look even more forward to the Fest which is quickly approaching, just 2 Sundays from yesterday. Can’t wait to see all of you!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Piggy we have discussed on here the varying importance of a left tack for a left handed QB. Someone posted a theory that it could be why they traded Tunsil. (that the team was planning on drafting Tua and saw less value in Tunsil with a left hander back there)

We need to shore up the Oline regardless of who is at QB. I am hopeful that we can find some guys without having to have all 1st round picks on the line.

At one point in the recent past we had a first round pick at LT, LG, C & RT (Albert, Tunsil, Pouncey & James) and our line still wasn’t that good. (injuries contributed)

I hope we pick a right handed QB anyway. One who is more prototypical in size and who is less injury prone than Tua.

Whoever they pick I just hope they get it right finally!

On the flip side Piggy does have a valid point about protecting whomever we have back there at QB. (as I said I HOPE we can do it without spending all first round picks on big fatties) Just ask a Colts fan how it feels to suck for Luck and then lose Luck after 7 seasons because he got beat down so much.

Vontaze Burfict of the Raiders was suspended for the rest of the season. Prior histories are considered when fining and suspending players, and boy does Burfict have a prior history.

Oh yes, the OL needs to be a big focal point for next season. I like Dieter and Kilgore is definitely serviceable for another year. One way you could help the OL would be to sign a OT in FA and draft a guy like Tyler Biadasz in the middle to late 1st round. He can play OG and then move to C down the road.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Holy Crap!

In 2014, when he was with the Bengals, he was fined $25,000 for twisting the ankles of the Panthers’ Cam Newton and Greg Olsen

In 2015, his troubles all seemed to involve the Steelers.. Several infractions in that game brought Burfict a total of $69,000 in fines.

Burfict was suspended for the first three games of 2016 for his actions the previous season, but came right back to step on LeGarrette Blount’s head. That brought a $75,000 fine. He also flipped off the Bills’ crowd.

An elbow to the head of his continuing adversary Brown led to a $112,000 fine, his biggest yet.

$281,000 is fines is unfreakin believable!

I don’t think selecting a qb with the first over all pick makes any sense at all, first of all Rosen looks damn good, secondly how many great knock it out of the park qbs were selected #1 over all?
look at russell wilson…aaron rodgers…tom brady…the list goes on.

you let Rosen become your starter and draft a qb later to learn behind him.

now who should we draft early?

you have to draft guys that mother nature does not make many of, these are big guys that are agile and can run also durable DL …OL…Edge rusher.

little fast guys are a dime a dozen.

lastly, you don’t target one guy. and you use one of your early picks to trade back and acquire more 1st rnders in future years, repeat that in the 2nd rnd as well.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m not that far from your take. If was doing it would go the old fashioned rebuilding way….. bug uglies on both sides. Guess with Flores D that means less big ugly on the DL and more 3-4 OLB types….. but could still see a fat assed NT in there too.

We don’t play enough 4-3 to use a high pick on a DE in a 3-4.

They may acquire or draft an edge setter as they went after trey flowers last off season.

  8. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

MIke E — man you get no love. That was an awesome write.

Was interested to see how you are starting to like Rosen. I am as well. Not sure if he is the future, but sure would be nice to use the capital up top for someone other than a QB. Lots of season still…. but feel better about him than Tanny already.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Stanger. I like Rosen. I don’t understand in the least why we would trade him for a 4th? I want to watch him improve throughout the season. I think he may very well be promising enough to be our future starter. I’m not convinced either way yet, but I see enough good things to feel hopeful he can be the guy.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

now who should we draft early?
    Justin Hubert

Then you trade Rosen for a 4th if you can get it and use that 4th for a RB

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Only way Rosen goes for a 4th is if he plays worse the rest of the season. And I’m sorta thinking about keeping him. Least possibly.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Two teems moving on from him will drop his value “just because”. I personally think Rosen will still be here next year and he will win the starting job (at least to start the season) over whomever they select in the first round in the 2020 draft. I just don’t think he will stay the starter. I say the over under is 6 games next season and then Hurbert will be starting.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we pick a QB of the future up top in the first, not sure will drop Rosen’s value all that much. Think will depend mostly on his tape for the rest of the season…. and I haven’t seen that yet. And if we don’t take a QB up top or get a big name one in FA then seems we’ll never know what Rosen could be traded for. In 2020 at least.

  10. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We have Rosen on a rookie contract. There is no reason to move on him next year. At the very least he provides quality backup material for 3 more years. At best he competes with whomever we draft next year (assuming we draft QB next year).

That said, if we don’t have the #1 overall pick, there are many other good prospects

If we pick a QB of the future up top in the first, not sure will drop Rosen’s value all that much

This is all hypothetical of course, we don’t know what will happen, but his value went from a high 1st when selected to a 2nd and 5th when traded after one year. So do you assume his value will go up? Will it stay a 2nd? only slip to a 3rd?

I’m just saying if he doesn’t make the front office pick something besides a QB with their first pick it will be two teams who have said “Meh, not good enough” which would conceivably ding his value.

As it stands I believe the FO will pick a QB early next draft and let Rosen compete (and probably win due to experience and knowledge of scheme, at least to start the season)

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I get where you are coming from on that, but maybe just discounting the value of that factor versus how he performs this year. We take a QB #1 #1 then just way we went. Only thing it says is that’s the guy we want.

When Kliff Kingsbury took Murray said that is the guy he wanted, including the kind of O he wanted to run. But you are right in that case we would have decided Rosen not our future after trading for him the year before.

Same time…. we got him on the cheap both in trade value and his contract. Did pass on him first time in the second round and he was there later. And that might go back to the tape in his first year or maybe that the Cards let all the other teams that might have wanted him take QBs in the first.

  15. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yea, we better have a plan B if we are targeting Tua. Because right now Washington has at least as good of shot at getting the 1st pick as we do. Even if Washington doesn’t take him, you know they will definitely be looking for the best trade offer from teams like Miami, Cincy and Denver.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Washington just took Haskins
      I don’t think they take a QB

I think the bengals and Broncos are probably the main competition
And there are other QBs that are worthy of a high pick

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Personally, I hope we’re not targeting a QB with our first pick. Depending on where we pick, we could get a fortune back for that pick, and still land a first RD QB if we’re so inclined to take one

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We already have 3 first rounders, 2 seconds and 2 thirds
That’s potentially 7 starters in the first 2 days of the draft just this year

      I’m a greedy 🐷
But we don’t need to trade the first overall pick if we have it
Maybe if we have 2 picks in the top 5, a trade down can work

But it would be nice to get whomever we wanted with the first overall pick

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We may able to turn that into a current NFL player + picks in a trade. It really depends on what we need, where our other 2 picks end up, and what we can get back in return. I also have no problem taking a DE or OL with the first pick if they feel he’s worthy of it. I wouldn’t mind having the flexibility to do as we please though

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I wouldn’t be happy with OL with the first pick
But chase young is a worthy pass rusher to be first overall

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Please whatever happens, please Grier and company, pick the right damn players. If we mess up on this draft we are going to be the bottom dwellers of the league for the next few years.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOTS of football yet to be played this year, and that’s a good thing if your name is Josh Rosen. If the season ended today, he’d be trending toward 88 sacks taken (nearly double what Ryan Fitzpatrick is trending toward), 8 TDs to 24 INTs by season’s end, and a 51.2 completion %… translated to a 57.7 passer rating.

Over the next 12 games, our FO will be assessing Rosen’s progress… not so much these abysmal initial numbers. Look for him to grow (albeit with some hiccups) as the season continues.

JMO, but we won’t be trading Rosen, period. And also JMO, we will be drafting a QB with our first pick in 2020… unless Rosen plays LIGHTS OUT for the rest of the season, which is highly unlikely with our current roster.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I missed the two games before, but liked what saw out of Rosen yesterday. And he did have a 126.8 QB rating in the first half. Not like the Chargers’ D is a bad one. One I picked in FF.

  19. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re going to need a franchise OT (LT or RT, contingent upon who our future QB will be) if we’re to boost this Offense. Additionally, we’re going to need to plug a couple of holes on the interior O-Line, none of whom go by the last name of Deiter.

We needn’t do this by using high draft picks, either (save perhaps the franchise OT). If we can do this (via the so-call “Patsie* way), our Offense will become significantly better. More time for our QB to throw, and holes for our RBs to run through.

It’s strange to me, Stanger. Rosen looks the part of a very good, young QB and our eyes tell us YES. However, when ya look at the stats, we’re very let down with a resounding NO.

Best I can come up with? We’re so starved for a QB since Marino that our eyes will deceive us. That, and 1st half vs 2nd half Rosen. And Tannehill was very much the same way.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Full game Rosen had a 70% completion rate. Least liked that stat. I’m not sold on him in anyway, but not in anyway willing to give up on him either. 12 more games left. Let’s see what he does.

If anything was surprised they started him before the bye. Maybe that means he was looking good or maybe that Fitz did not. But still take that was watching him yesterday as a good sign on what the coaches think.

    —————-
Big-10 O-Line are STUDS, to be sure. Jeff Ireland was too enthused by speedy O-Linemen who could pull from any position. We need ROCKS on the O-Line! FOUNDATIONS by which we can then get pullers from the Guard position.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

In a perfect world we get a RT in FA , draft Andrew Thomas, and draft Tyler Biadasz.😉
Then you get a QB, CB, and pass rusher with the remaining picks in the first 2 rounds.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You and I are very much on the same wavelength, Rgs! However, I want our franchise Tackle to grow with our new QB. Depends on if our new QB is righty or lefty… 😉

Meaning… if we draft Tua, I want to draft a RT. If we draft Herbert, I want to draft a LT.

Plus I have Joe Burrow as my #1a and Tua as #1b.

I’m thinking in one scenario we could draft Andrew Thomas, Joe Burrow, and Tyler Biadasz in the 1st, then CB and pass rusher with the next 2 picks.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

From a roster perspective, the best teams in the league are build from the INSIDE out. That means TRENCH play with the BIG UGLIES. Get to the most important position in football via Defense (QB), and the opposition’s plans go southward. Protect the most important position in football via Offense (QB), and the opposition’s plans go southward.

It’s all about INSIDE out. Here’s a song from my childhood that I still dearly love…

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M -That’s why you just can’t look at the stats. Remember the the 1st game he started, we dropped 2 TD’s? 1 TD was Williams and the other one was Parker. Think that might just help his stats? Sure it would. Even in relief I believe his 2nd game he threw a potential TD that was dropped. Those hurt!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I know, my man! I’m the one who constantly lectures about watching the game tape.

My eyes DO like Rosen, but we have to also digest reality. Like I said earlier, he’s got 12 more games to improve, and he undoubtedly WILL… as will his receivers as they build more chemistry with him.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think all you can really do is compare the team to when Fitz was in and now with Rosen. I know the scoreboard doesn’t show it and the stats don’t bear it out either, but the team looks much better with Rosen on the field IMO. It’s not nearly as painful to watch. Don’t you think? Absolutely correct, which is exactly what I stated with my initial post, buddy! We want to see improvement, and we undoubtedly will.

Beware, however. If a 70% completion percentage only allows for 10 points all game long, it becomes unremarkable. That’s the Tannehill legacy, sadly. That’s what a 5.7 Yds/attempt gets ya.

VERY good post! And by the way, THANK YOU for your write today, Mike E!

I’ll say it like this… it’s most difficult to compare QBs on a team that has no O-Line. We can’t run the ball, thus we can’t take any pressure off either QB. We DO know that Rosen is the future, and Fitzpatrick is/was a mere placeholder, so there’s that.

I don’t envy this FOs situation in trying to eval Rosen this year, under such BS circumstances. It’s a very tough task, Brother.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks M! It probably isn’t as tough for them as it is for us. They know what they’re looking at, when someone on the O-line blows an assignment or when a receiver runs a poor route etc. We don’t know know or really get to see these things, all we see is what they show, and sometimes it;s really hard to decipher fault. I think he gave this team a little jolt, and I it seems to me like we see improvement in small increments. Let’s hope at least that trend continues where we keep seeing improvement.

It’s really hard to evaluate anything based on the level of talent Rosen is playing with. I agree that he needs to play better, but is he the kind of QB that can win with whatever talent you put with him? Obviously he isn’t Brady yet, but he looks pretty good when he has time.

I take these types of articles with a grain of salt, not that anything he wrote wasn’t true, but I’ve seen plenty of great QBs struggle, when they don’t have time.

  36. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We must take a QB with our first pick, nothing against Rosen, we just need options/competition. A great QB makes the entire team better.

Rosen can win an SB with a great team around him, but I want a great QB winning us an SB with a pretty good team around him.

I like Rosen, but don’t think his ceiling is what Tua and some of the others are. I could be wrong, but we can’t assume he has a high ceiling, we must draft Tua/Herbert.

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wash. has at least competed in some of their games, as has Cin. we still are the hands down favorite to get #1 pick. We may beat them in a couple of weeks, but we’re still going to get #1 pick.

Not knocking you guys (yeah, I’m fucking knocking you guys!)

We’re judging Rosen while playing for 2 terrible teams. I don’t really know what Rosen is, but I’d bet Rosen looks better in a Patriots uni, a ravens uni etc. You guys really think Tua comes in here with this exact team and starts lighting it up? I don’t know, maybe he would, but Fitzpatrick lit it up at times last year with TB, he couldn’t do shit here. If our FO don’t believe Rosen is the one then I have no problem with them finding the right QB. I just think it’s a little early to nitpick everything Rosen does with this shitheap of a team.

I think Rosen has more upside than we give him credit for. Receivers need to catch the f-ing football. It’s not that they were just dropped passes but it’s more about when they were dropped. Lost a few TD’s and 1st downs that could have changed everything. I mean, Gumby didn’t light it up his 1st 2 years and sure his WR’s didn’t drop as many balls. We have to build a supporting offense where any QB could succeed, IMO.

So, with going by what I said above, I tried to do that with my latest “FirstPick” mock. I really like this one also. I traded down from pick 1-21 to 1-25 and got an extra 2nd. Tried to address weaknesses but no QB in 1st, sorry: (couldn’t cut and paste on this shitty computer)
    R1-P1: DE/EDGE/OLB Chase Young, OSU
    R1-P9: OT Andrew Thomas, UGA

    R2-P1: C Tyler Biadasz, WIS
    R2-P24: OT Alaric Jackson, Iowa
    R2-P25: ILB/OLB Jacob Phillips, LSU
    R3-P1: RB DAndre Swift, UGA
    R4-P23: FS/SS Alohi Gilman, ND
    R5-P8: QB Jalen Hurts, OK
    R6-P1: DT Raequan Williams, MSU
    R6-P28: CB TJ Carter, Memphis
    R7-P30: WR Tyler Johnson, Minn

Was wanting QB Joe Burrow at R2-P24 but FirstPick doesn’t even have him in this draft. Will have to send them an email and say WTF! LOL I love this crop and we would still have 2 comp picks in the mid rounds. If I could plug Borrow in at R2-P24, I would be beside myself and would get another OT with one of the comp picks and maybe another DE at 5 instead of Hurts.

I know it’s early, but Jones was rumored in last year’s draft as being a very good NFL QB prospect but he played for Duke and Haskins was on the pedigree team. Jones spent his college career and his early NFL career having to lift his team. Haskins played with a blue chip school for one year. That’s my worry about Tua, not one year but playing for a college team that is at the top in recruiting.

It’s mostly a crap shoot finding a franchise QB. Having a horrible OL almost dooms ANY QB to failure. Brady sat for a year plus with a veteran qb to watch. Then stepped in to a nice place. Then he stepped up. It was the perfect storm.

It will be interesting to see if we can give him time to “grow”.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We can give a QB time to grow
That’s the advantage of having Rosen
The ability to rebuild the OL this offseason is sitting right in front of us
We have a lot of $ to spend
      And picks too

I think the smart play I a to let the D suffer another year
And take QB, OL, WR, RB in the draft
That’s 2 OL, 2 WR and maybe even 2 RBs (including a late round pick)

I don’t think we will fix everything in one offseason

Wyoming, Liked your draft also. I’m not taking a QB with our first pick though if Chase Young is there. But that’s me.

  90. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I think our team wants a QB who is smart, great at reading defenses, accurate and has the arm to get it down field/make all the throws. I don’t really know who that is in this QB crop. Not sure where Tua is with reading defenses. Does he have to? I think that is the problem with the struggles in the NFL early on for most of these QB’s who come from dominant teams in college. See Haskins, dude in Arizona, etc. They have dominant OL and top play makers. Fromm is the best at reading defenses but lacks the arm strength and deep ball accuracy. Probably why we passed on Minschew (deep ball accuracy). From what I have read on the top 5 QB’s Love is the worst at reading defenses and was said it is his biggest weakness coming into this season. Burrow, I like what I see but don’t know enough about his ability to read defenses either.

This is why I want to build a team multiple QB’s could be successful in. That is why I am going best pass rusher with 1st pick, OT second pick, best CB 3rd pick and (looks like Wyoming agrees) C Tyler Badassz at 2-1. Then another OT by the end of the 3rd round.
