Dolphins offense erupts and Dolphins defeat Eagles 37-31 in the aqua throwback unis

Honestly, considering how bad our run game has been all season long, including this game against the Eagles, it’s astonishing that we were able to put up 409 yards of offense on the Eagles defense. Ryan Fitzpatrick trusted his big guys, but no one was bigger on Sunday than 5th year WR DeVante Parker. The 6’3 216 Parker looked liked an All Pro receiver, snaring everything thrown his way, and most of those were difficult, acrobatic catches where he had to not only aggressively go up to get the ball but twist his body in order to do so. It seemed liked every catch topped the previous one. Fitzpatrick challenged the Eagles secondary up top all day and Parker and Gesicki rewarded him for doing so.

I can’t stress enough how impressive the Dolphins air attack was. The Dolphins had only 17 rushing attempts for 56 yards yet Fitzpatrick managed to assault the Eagles with 365 yards passing. If you take into consideration that WR Albert Wilson broke off a 28 yard run, that leaves 28 yards on 16 attempts. All this happening after Fitzpatrick’s first pass of the game was intercepted. It was such a pleasure to watch too, such a rarity here in Miami for us to see. Wentz wasn’t bad, but Fitzgerald was just better. His receivers were a lot better. Not to leave out Gesicki who also made some nice catches, he finished with 5 catches for 79 yards and a TD. That’s 2 TD’s in 2 games after not managing a TD catch in 26 games. He’s emerging for real. Even Albert Wilson got involved, and although he’s not the player he was last year, he looked closer than he has since the injury.

Going forward this year and next, WR is definitely not a priority. Parker and Hurns make a nice duo and don’t forget that Preston Williams will be back next season too. At the skill positions, I think RB is a greater need than WR. We’ll need some depth at TE as well but the Dolphins could use a bellcow RB for sure. It’s been a long time since we’ve had one, and nothing helps a QB like a strong rushing attack. Just look at Tennessee and Ryan Tannehill for proof of that. He did well when Ajayi was a threat and now he’s taking it to another level with the Titans. I would expect us to find that RB in rounds 2-4. I’d be very surprised if we have any interest in any of the FA RB’s like Melvin Gordon, Derrick Henry or Kareem Hunt. I think we’ll find our guy in the draft.

Back to Gesicki. He now has 36 catches for 401 yards and 2 TD’s. It’s not inconceivable that he finishes the season with 50 catches for close to 600 yards and maybe 5 TD’s. That’s a nice jump from last year and a great sign going forward. Durham Smythe is still under contract next season but depth is definitely needed. As far as the O-line is concerned, seems to me that Deiter and Calhoun are keepers that are developing and at worst, Calhoun is a nice depth player who will compete for a starting job. We need to upgrade the tackles and get younger at center, find our new leader on the O-line for the next decade.

It’s clear that Flores has his guys playing hard. Look at Eric Rowe who has done everything his coaches have asked, from playing CB to safety to nickel LB. Sound familiar? One guy whines and gets shipped out of town and this guy gets rewarded and gets himself a nice new 3 year contract. Good for him. Team player, not like MEnkah Fitzpatrick, better known as Minkah the Mutinous. Things work out, which is why it was so frustrating to me that MTM bailed so early. BTW, MTM costs us over $5M dead cap next year. Anyway, happy for Rowe and it’s a good story.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

  1. The Flying Pig says:

    Robbed by a PI call

But it’s too meaningless a game to ruin my Sunday

  2. Mike E. says:

End of Bills vs Ravens game ends on very similar play to PI call. No call though . . .

  3. ElephantRider says:

I would not want Flores pissed at me.

This game changes nothing. Fuck yeah.

  4. Mike E. says:

Love Flores fire though, who wouldn’t want to play for that guy? Oh yeah, fucking MTM. lol

  5. CavalierKong says:

Laird made a huge mistake going out of bounds when he caught his last pass. Bad situational awareness.Jest have less than a minute left when they get the ball if he stays in.

    • Mike E. says:

They were saying during the broadcast how smart Laird is as a football player. Maybe cause he’s white? Just saying . . .

      • CavalierKong says:

        LOL

He looked pretty good, especially in the 2nd half, but that last catch and run OB was exactly the kind of situation where a smart player stays in.

      • Ken says:

Well when you’re not that athletic I guess that’s what they call you

  6. Tim Knight says:

The problem is the officials are so inconsistent. I like the fire from Flores though. 🙂

  7. Ken says:

Ugly game and truthfully we didn’t deserve the W. How many trips in the red zone without a TD?

    • Mike E. says:

Did the Jets deserve the win? Neither team played well, and in the scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter, but we deserved the win just as much as the Jets. I just like that our guys always play hard, even if they don’t always execute well. There’s no lack of effort or desire there.

      • Ken says:

They got the ball in the end zone. I do think they outplayed us. They were not great but they were better

      • CavalierKong says:

We beat them in every facet of the game except the RZ. I don’t think they were better..

  8. manitobafinfan says:

    46-45 saints 1 min left

  9. CavalierKong says:

I was pretty neutral about making PI reviewable, but now having seen it in action most of the year, I really dislike that NY can stop and change the game in the last two minutes with those reviews.

  10. manitobafinfan says:

    Wow on Kittle

  11. Mike E. says:

Ken, the TD was a blown coverage by us. If you think that means the Jets did better I’m cool with that. Not worth getting into a discussion about it. I didn’t think either team played particularly well. We had a TD if Fitz didn’t overthrow Gesicki, threw it too high and behind him. Could have led him easily for a TD, he just blew it.

    • Ken says:

I don’t disagree with you. It was an ugly but we blew the coverage and we missed the throws the Jets made more plays. Not many but enough to make a difference.

    • CavalierKong says:

Blew the throw to Herd that could have been a TD too. I thought this game was very even and our defense stepped up and got screwed.

  12. Tim Knight says:

During Flores’ PC Chris Perkins asked him if this was a game you deserved to lose and Flores finishes his response by saying as for deserved to lose not sure I understand that one. LOL

  13. stangerx says:

Looking forward — what most about this game is don’t think Darnold has “IT”. And yes he will be the Yets QB going forward for a while.

  14. wyoming85 says:

  15. Tim Knight says:

I enjoyed the game. It wasn’t played overly well by either team but both teams aren’t very good. We were playing TEs at WR because we’re so banged up. We have a different game day roster every week. LOL

  16. wyoming85 says:

I still think there is something going on with Fitz’s arm!
He was not sharp on many passes today!

  17. Tim Knight says:

That face mask by the Saints DB – was he ever going to let go? That was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

  18. CavalierKong says:

Ken, I don’t disagree that it was PI, but it wasn’t egregious PI and I don’t like that NY can choose to look at some of these calls, and not others. We got screwed IMO. I think that flag doesn’t always get thrown in real time, and will usually not get thrown ESPECIALLY at the end of the game where they let usually them play. They need to get rid of this rule.

  19. manitobafinfan says:

    Tannehill with a great tackle

  20. olddolphan says:

I, Too, thought there was NO proof on replay that Miami’s defender even had a hold of the Jet’s player’s jersey. And he certainly did NOT yank him around nor prevent him from trying to make the catch of a very wide throw.
Flores’ reaction was quite different from that of the Dolphins’ FO when the STEALERS stole a game from the Dolphins very early in the Ross regime. Gene Steratore, whose family had seasons tickets with the Steelers, was allowed to referee a game he, at least, had a strong rooting interest in, if not a betting/financial interest in, also. Steve Ross’s Casper Milquetoast letter to the league was in strong cobtrast to Flores’ “We wuz Robbed” response. THIS TIME, I HOPE ROSS really supports his players and his coaching staff by firing off a Don Shula style BLISTERING COMPLAINT to NFL HEADQUARTERS!!
    ————————-
IF ROSS REALLY WANTS to kill the “Tanking” accusations, firing off such a letter or email of outrage would be one way to do it. But, will he???

Right now, the silence is deafening.

C’mon, Ross. DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!!!!
    ———————————————————–
STILL BASKING IN THE JOY of FAU’s 49-6 thumping of UAB yesterday in the Conference USA Championship Game!! Hated to hear that Lane Kiffin is moving on to another stint in the SEC (this time at Ole Miss). I’m realistic enough to know that FAU can not compete for the services of a head coach with the SEC. So I wish Kiffin well. And I thank him for RAISING THE VISIBILITY OF FAU FOOTBALL in the eyes of many people across the country. Thanks to Kiffin, the next head coach at FAU is in a far better position to compete for quality players in Conference USA. Lane Kiffin certainly will be missed in Boca Raton.

UPCOMING is a bowl game to be determined. Right now, I’m just wondering WHO will coach the team for that game.

  21. bookman11 says:

I don’t like the interference call, but I think it is kind of bitter sweet. Dolphins lose. Flores pissed and wanting to assault the Refs (lol). Dolphins play hard. Draft pick maintains or goes up.

  22. CavalierKong says:

LOL, it actually couldn’t have been a better day for us. We lost and keep our draft position, but we (or at least I) can feel like we actually won that game, and got screwed.

Our offense lost Parker and Wilson in the 2nd quarter and we still moved the ball. We ran relatively decent in the 2nd half against the best rush defense in the league with a backup type RB. We seem to have gotten over our 3rd quarter issues, and our coach continues to shine in how this team is executing while being generally bereft of talent.

  23. manitobafinfan says:

I didn’t think he had turned him until after he knocked it down , yes he had his hand on him , but it was a late turn

  24. olddolphan says:

DON’T AGREE with the “It couldn’t have been a better day for us” statement. ANY DAY we lose to the Jets is a bad day.
    ———————
There is no substitute FOR WINNING!!
ESPECIALLY when the Jets are involved.

  25. wyoming85 says:

Hey we got a New Years eve Bowl!

  26. olddolphan says:

FAU PLAYS SMU in the Boca Raton Bowl Saturday, Dec. 21, @ 3:30 PM on ABC. Nothing like playing a Bowl Game in your home stadium (ask the U. of Miami, who won TWO National Championship games in the historic Orange Bowl.)
    ———————
Hey YOUNG STANGER: Do you think Ross has fired off that letter of complaint, yet??
    —————
ACTUALLY, assuming Ross was at the game, he could just order his Limo driver to take him to the League headquarters in New York, right??? I’m guessing he did NOT do that.

    • stangerx says:

I’m guessing he didn’t as well. Know if I owned the team would not. Thought the SOP was start of the week that teams forward to the league office plays they don’t agree with. Didn’t know owners do that, but you know a lot more about stuff like that than me.

  27. manitobafinfan says:

Tannehill beautiful loft for a 95 Td td

  28. Ken says:

OD wants an “airing of the grievances”. Happy Festivas

  29. Tim Knight says:

Props to Isaiah Ford for stepping up.

    • stangerx says:

Didn’t stay on the PS long.

      • Tim Knight says:

No choice, we needed him. Not surprised that he looked better than he ever has with this coaching staff. These guys are well coached and prepared. We just need more top end talent.

  30. stangerx says:

    Falcons won.
    Broncos won.
    Jets won.
    Chargers winning.
    Texans lost.
    Life could be worse.

  31. bookman11 says:

Who cares about a letter of complaint? Ross has no responsibility for what the Refs do, and who wants him to be Jerry Jones type owner? SBJ, can’t we just give this coach, who obviously wants to win, a chance?

    • Tim Knight says:

It would have as much impact as protesting a baseball game.

    • olddolphan says:

BOOKMAN: Since you and Tim weren’t going to games in the 60’s and early ’70’s (or WERE YOU?) you perhaps aren’t aware of the history of this issue. In the ’70’s, Shula was known to FAX particular plays where he thought an egregious error occurred. Later, a copy of the game film would be sent over night to the commissioner’s office. NOW, the commissioner has this info available right at his office, if he wants to check anything. I don’t know what you mean by “Jerry Jones type of owner” on a blown call. But I DO KNOW owners have the right to appeal, and have done so many times over the last several decades. Sometimes these owners tell the media about these issues, sometimes they may not. But I SURE AS HELL WANT THE DOLPHINS OWNER TO REQUEST A REVIEW OF A KEY PLAY WHICH COST THE DOLPHINS A FAIRLY EARNED VICTORY—–even if YOU and TIM don’t. However, since neither of you are season ticket holders, perhaps your interest level isn’t the same as mine. And I HOPE your not “JUST FINE” with a blown call determining the outcome of this game. I, SURE AS HELL, AM NOT OK WITH IT, AND I NEVER WILL BE.
      —————————–
Now, Bookman, how in hell would an appeal interfere with our head coach who wants to win a game??? I think Flores would be HAPPY that Ross supports his view that , perhaps, the replay officials made the wrong call on this vital play. UNLESS you and Tim are both JETS FANS, I think you’d WANT FLORES to have his point of view on this play considered on any NFL review of it. And, by his actions, I feel pretty confident that Flores believes a high level review of this play SHOULD BE MADE.

WHY are you afraid of a review??

      • stangerx says:

OD — maybe we do need a new owner cause can guarantee stuff like that is not what Ross would do. He’s far more concerned with his Hudson Yards project and other things. Did you catch that Amazon just did a big move in there?

Would it be OK with you if the Dolphins asked for the play to be reviewed and someone other than Ross asked?

      • Tim Knight says:

Seriously? Ticky tack calls like this happen all the time. I agree with Kong, that going to NY off the field is not a good idea. It can open up a can of worms for nefarious calls that makes the league look fixed. This game in the big scheme of things didn’t mean much this season. But wait until it happens in the playoffs.

  32. bailbondmike says:

Tannehill with big hit on a big DT saving a pick 6.

  33. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, the owners review this type of stuff at the owner’s meetings every offseason. This has nothing to do with Ross personally. LOL

  34. bookman11 says:

Ok, OD let me try this one more time, the great Don Shula, along with Joe Robbie and Huzinga never won a SB with the best QB of all time. The Dolphins have not won a title in over 40 years!!!! This is not a Ross thing!! Let it go!!! We pissed away Marino’s career. I am just hoping to win a SB before I die, you are not the only one who has suffered through this shit. Smh

  35. bailbondmike says:

Tannehill 20-26 for 386 3 TD’s 1 INT so far. Texans are at the Titans next week.

  36. Tim Knight says:

You see how these calls are working? They blew a fumble that could have been returned for much more and maybe a TD. The officials need to be better.

    • olddolphan says:

      That’s right, Tim.
Now try to explain that to BOOKMAN who apparently thinks this is somehow the fault of Robbie & Shula who failed to win a Super Bowl when he was watching.
BOOKMAN, try turning off those reruns of “The Twilight Zone” for a few days.

  37. bailbondmike says:

    Damn Steelers won again.

  38. Ken says:

Who needs equipment? Cheats lose 😁

  39. CavalierKong says:

Woohoo! Pets lose. Fun game, and NE should be out of the race for top spot in the AFC.

Oh, and Pets got screwed on calls to day, lol. The fumble blown dead, and the missed TD ruled out of bounds.

  40. CavalierKong says:

Buffalo has the Steelers, Pets, and Jest left. If they win out, they win the division over NE based on conference schedule.

  41. CavalierKong says:

    https://www.miamidolphins.com/news/jason-sanders-sets-field-goal-record-in-tough-loss-to-jets

“Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, set a franchise single-game rushing record for quarterbacks with 65 yards on eight rushing attempts. The previous mark was 59 yards and belonged to Chad Henne, who did it in the 2011 Monday night season opener against New England.”

Is that correct? Tanny never had more than 59 yds rushing for us? I feel like there were a couple of games he had nearly that on one run.

  42. CavalierKong says:

I’m pretty sure it’s common and standard practice in today’s NFL for teams to submit bad calls and contested plays to the league every week. But maybe if Ross writes a letter and strenuously objects the league will take a super duper serious look at that bullshit review and take some time to reconsider…

  43. The Flying Pig says:

    We are still at 4

    • Ken says:

That doesn’t make sense. Washington beat us so they should be at 4 and we should be at 3

      • CavalierKong says:

Strength of schedule comes before head to head in draft order.

      • Ken says:

I think our position depends on what happens with the Giants. If they lose we move up to 3

      • CavalierKong says:

That’s got nothing to do with it, Ken. The first tie breaker in draft order is strength of schedule.

      • CavalierKong says:

I think I see what you meant there, Ken, and I initially misunderstood. But it’s actually the other way around (it’s counter-intuitive, the team with the worse SOS has the higher pick).

If the Giants lose, the Skins SOS goes down so it keeps them ahead of us, but it’s close with us and the Skins right now, so if the Giants win it might be enough for us to jump the Skins in SOS.

  44. The Flying Pig says:

Redskins and Giants play in 2 weeks

If we lose to the Giants , there might be a shot we finish at 2
    Not advocating for it
Just saying the #2 pick is very alive for us

  45. CavalierKong says:

We have the Bills and Patriots in our division who are a combined 19-7, whereas the NFC east has two teams with 3 or fewer wins and their division winner will likely be 8-8 at best. I think it’s inevitable that for us to get ahead of the Skins or Giants in the draft, they will have to have a better record than us.

  46. CavalierKong says:

    http://www.tankathon.com/nfl

This has current strength of schedule. If we lose out, we can potentially move up to 2, but we’d need the Giants to win two since we won’t get ahead of their SOS. So like Piggy said, if the Giants beat the skins and us, it might happen. I think our stronger opportunity is ending up at 3 because I don’t see us losing out. We need the Skins to win one or two more.

  47. olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: I’m soo-o-o glad Ross has more important things to do than run the football team!! Now, maybe, he’ll urge one of his underlings to ask the NFL if they’ll take another look at a possible blown call in the Jets-Dolphins game.
I’m sure FLORES would make that request to the NFL in a heartbeat. But I’m guessing, given the chain of command, FLORES could not do that on his own. I’m thinking ROSS would have to give his blessing before such a message was sent to NFL headquarters.
    ——————-
ONCE AGAIN, Ross’s silence is deafening.
Or, maybe, he’s thinking “DON’T rock the boat! If we ask them to review that call—like Flores wants us to— they just might make sure we win too many games to get one of the top quarterbacks. –NOPE, can’t let FLORES mess up our strategy to get one of the top 2 picks!”
    —————–
    NAW, Just kidding!
Steve Ross knows what’s best for the Dolphins at all times.
Just accept that & everything will be just fine.
