Dolphins stun Pats in NE for big win in season finale 27-24. OC Chad O’Shea is fired and team quickly hires Chan Gailey to replace him

Wow, a lot of things happened this weekend. More stunning than the away win in Foxborough to me is the firing of OC Chad O’shea, and then even more stunning is the quick hiring of 68 year old Chan Gailey. Man, I did not have any inkling that might happen. I know the run game was non existent but I also thought all too often running room wasn’t available either. Is that play calling, offensive strategy or just a lack of talent on the O-line? Apparently, Grier and Flores must have agreed it was a combination of all of them. Our best DB Xavien Howard was arrested for domestic battery. Lots of news and I’m not sure if any of it is good. I’ll get back to all this, first I’ll cover the final game of the season, that most satisfying win in New England.

The Dolphins traveled to a proverbial house of horrors for them over the last 20 years. Before the win on Sunday, the Dolphins were 3-16 at Foxborough, and the last win before last Sunday was in 2008. We were 16 + points underdog for a reason yet Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins found a way to beat the Patriots, who by the way, needed that win to give them home field advantage in the playoffs. The defense made some plays and none was larger than the pick 6 against Tom Brady, the same Tom Brady that shreds us every time we travel north to play them. Eric Rowe made the biggest play of his career jumping the pass intended for Julian Edelman and taking that INT to the house for a TD.That gave the Dolphins a shocking 10-0 lead a 1/3 of the way through the 2nd QTR. The Patriots came back to tie it though and I’m sure many of you expected the wheels to fall off after that happened. The first half ended tied at 10.

This team has a lot of fight in them and I think that’s a product of the HC Brian Flores’ mentality. He didn’t take the job to satisfy the medias agenda of losing, he’s a winner, a fighter. The team emulates the coach. Devante Parker had one of the best defensive backs in football on him most of the game, and Stephon Gilmore had no answer for the rising Parker. The New England Patriots had no answer for Ryan Fitzpatrick and his ability to constantly step up and either run away from the pass rush or step up and get rid of the football. It must have driven Belichick crazy. DeVante finished the game with 8 catches for 137 yards for an impressive 17.1 YPC. Our new susperstar finished the season with 72 receptions and 1202 yards along with 9 TD’s at a 16.7 YPC clip. Parker simply attacked the ball this season and played like every pass in his vicinity was his, it was remarkable.

On defense Davon Godchaux silently had a very nice season. There will be no accolades for him but Godchaux finished the season playing a combination of DE and DT with 75 tackles (33 solo) and 2 sacks as well as 4 TFL. Not stunning numbers but just very solid, reliable play. Godchaux had 4 tackles and 2 TFL against the Patriots. Andrew Van Ginkel had 6 unassisted tackles. Jerome Baker had 8 tackles (5 solo) along with a FF. Baker is a bright spot on this defense as well. Hey, did I mention that the Dolphins were down 24-20 with 3:53 to go? I can almost guarantee you that Patriots fans thought they had another in the the bag, the hapless Dolphins gave ’em a good fight, but now it was time to mail it in. UH-UH. Ryan Fitzpatrick led a 13 play 75 yard drive to take the lead on a 2 YD rushing TD by who other than the Dolphins leading rusher, Ryan Fitzpatrick. That was exciting as hell, it really was. That drive was daggers brother, and Belichick must have been bleeding inside watching that transpire. No run game to help him, Ryan Fitzpatrick came out firing to Parker, Ford and Gesicki, all the way down the field and the although Fitz fumbled a snap he managed to fall on top of it to maintain possession. It was just beautiful that long drive with our MVP shredding the vaunted Patriots defense for the TD.

There are going to be so many changes next season I don’t even know where to start. Chan Gailey will be the skipper of the offense. He certainly has experience, but why do I feel so much like Bill Parcells handing over the keys to the offense to Dan Henning? Anyone? It’s a strange one, I just can’t shake it. It might work out, but I don’t feel good about it. Sorry. The draft will be bringing in a lot of new players, both drafted and undrafted. We have so many undrafted guys now that the talent may push some of these unsung players off the roster. You only get 53 spots so only the best survive. What happens with Xavien Howard could deal a serious blow to our defense. It may be nothing or it might be an 8 game suspension or more. It’s not good.

Brian Flores looks all the world to be a keeper. You have to feel confident with what he’s accomplished. With significantly more talent on his roster, better things will come. I don’t know much if any impact Josh Rosen has next season. Not sure if he’s even on the roster. I’d guess he will be because he doesn’t cost much so at worst he’s competing for either the starting job with Fitz or if we draft a QB, fighting to be the #2. We desperately need talent on both the O-line and D-line. We need pass rushers, either at DE, DT or LB or all 3. We may need 2 or more CB’s, and we also need a safety opposite Rowe. We must find a RB and hopefully some big fellas that give said RB some room to run. We seem to have found our receiving TE but I’m not sure Durham Smythe is an NFL TE. He’s a decent blocker but not an impact blocker and he doesn’t have hands. Clive Walford probably won’t be back. At WR I feel great about Parker and Albert Wilson showed some signs of life near the end of the season and Allen Hurns is a solid possession receiver along with Preston Williams who should be back by season’s start. Isaiah Ford looks promising as well so I don’t expect a lot of attention in the draft at WR. I’d say needs in order of importance are OL, DL as 1 and 1A, CB, QB about equal followed closely by RB and S.

GO DOLPHINS!!

Happy New Year!!!

If they do want to roll with Fitz/Rosen, then why not take a late round flier on QB Cole McDonald. A spread QB we could stash on PS to see how he develops.

    The BPA test:

    For us:
If you had the fewest sacks in the league and BPA when we are on the clock in Round 1 is a WR ..

I think the GM needs to build a team.
That was where Irleand went wrong. He just drafted or signed in FA a bunch of shiny toys with no regard to how those players would form a team on the field. Bellicheat however, often confounds the computer by drafting the exact player he wants ergardless of whether that guy is anyone’s BPA for that draft pick.

      Never do that.
The evil twin corrollary is “More is Better.”That is why I hate trading down for more picks.

Why would you want 2 or 3 guys almost certain to be B-/C+ rated players when you could have one potential All-Pro?

Bellicheat will find your B- guy and embarrass him for the W.
A-rated players can actually get you to the playoffs or a W all by themselves sometimes.

PS: I’m enjoying using Belicheat as a genius after Miami beat his ass again this year.

Ya, but Billacheck hardly ever picks who the “experts” think should be the pick!

He sticks to his own board and moves all over the place to get exactly the players he wants

But then again he doesn’t need 15 starters – he usually only needs 4 or 5!

Or not sure any of those teams want to move out of where they are. We’d have to jump the Giants because I don’t think they’d pass on Young. We’d likely be held for a King’s ransom and I don’t think we should do that.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, BPA on your board. Every team has a different grade on some prospects. When I say BPA I mean when you’re on the clock and whatever position clearly has the highest grade by a lot compared to other prospects, passing on him because that’s already a position of strength can be a dangerous practice. You might have just passed on a Larry Fitzgerald for an average OT because you needed a tackle. Either try to trade down or take the BPA. That’s what I believe in.

Jeff Ireland did not follow BPA, he thought he was cute and smarter than other people. I agree he just added players but didn’t really build a good team.

    Jeudy

Two months ago I thought Jeudy was a little over rated and Smith was Alabama’s better route runner. After watching him the rest of the season, I see that Jeudy is a great route runner, stays with his routes and makes good adjustments. Jeudy and Smith may be the 2 best route runners in the draft and both from the same school. Jeudy with his speed and route running make him the best in this huge WR class. I still hope we don’t draft a WR in the 1st round.

When looking at OT’s for the draft, I may have been looking past someone just because I thought he was a BIG fatty who would struggle at the next level. I am starting to rethink that about him cause everything I read about him says the opposite about him despite his weight.

LT Mekhi Becton, Louisville, 6’7″ 369 pounds. YES, 369 POUNDS! They said he was down to 350, but what the hey. This is what “thedraftnetwork” had to say about him:

As an NFL draft analyst, it can be wise to initially avoid too much noise when it comes to prospects. The expectations that come from hearing the viewpoints of others can often times introduce biases into film study and skew the final synopsis of a player.

But every so often, a nugget comes through on a player that demands attention and must be addressed — sooner rather than later. Such is the case with Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, a junior lineman who declared for the 2020 draft earlier this month. With his decision made, rumblings from well-respected names in the industry have begun to surface. When Daniel Jeremiah and Dane Brugler speak, you would be wise to listen, as a colleague or fan.

Especially when they start throwing around comparisons like Bryant McKinnie, a former top-10 overall selection back in 2002. McKinnie would go on to start 162 games in his NFL career and log an approximate value score of 82 from Pro Football Reference, one of the 20 highest cumulative scores given to any offensive tackle for their career since 2000. Some of the notable names ahead of McKinnie on the list?
    •Andrew Whitworth
    •Jason Peters
    •Joe Thomas
    •Walter Jones
    •Orlando Pace
    •Tyron Smith

The McKinnie comparison is high praise for a player like Becton who was generally regarded as a middling prospect over the course of the summer. So I took to the tape to find out if Becton lives up to the standard set by comparisons to McKinnie (Jeremiah) and Trent Brown (Brugler).

    Spoiler alert: He does.

Becton possesses rare skill in his fluidity at his size. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 369 pounds, he is an absolute mammoth of a human being and the stalwart of the Cardinals offensive line in 2019. Turn on the tape and you’ll find moments of pure domination at the point of attack, not just with brute strength and power but also with grace, explosiveness and rare physical qualities for an athlete of this stature.

But for all of the ways he wins that will surprise you, it is the dominance and strength you would hope for at this size that steals the show.

The upper body strength is unparalleled; and with Becton moving better than in years past, he’s got a better functional application in space, meaning he’s not just a straight line mauler like so many big brutes on the line. No, no.

Becton will whitewash defenders on down blocks but he’ll also torque and extend with a notable wingspan to soften the edge. Louisville seemed to gain 10 yards every time it ran off his inside hip across the slew of games studied for his final report.

There are some parallels to Jawaan Taylor in Becton’s game too, given that he’s blossomed in his final season at the college level and possesses rare physical qualities. It was pointed out to me by TDN publications intern Carter Donnick during a recent film session — and it has stuck. Taylor made rare plays on the edge and showed even more rare range as a blocker but ultimately fell to the early second round due to medical concerns. The former can also be said for Becton, who on one rep provided a backside cutoff block on a 1-technique defensive tackle: a surreal play for a 369-pound blocker aligned two gaps away at the snap.

Becton got an early-season endorsement from another strong offensive line evaluator, Duke Manyweather. Manyweather is a prominent coach, analyst and figure in the offensive line subdivision of the football world. Becton caught his eye by the end of September with some of these dominant reps on film.

With Becton officially in the 2020 draft player pool, time is running out to hop on the hype train before it leaves the station. But make no mistake — this train will leave the station soon. So check the tape and hop on board.

It’s going to be a fun ride to April for Becton.

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another WR sleeper who could be taken in rounds 2-4 due to this being a big WR class is TAMU WR Quartney Davis. From “thedraftnetwork”:

When you plug in Davis’ film, the first thing that stands out isn’t his size, speed or marginal stat line. Rather, unlike most collegiate wideouts, it’s his crisp movements and overall quickness that define Davis. For his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame, the receiver is exceptional at cutting off breaks with an elite pace using his technique and body control also serving as quality traits. According to Houston-based footwork coach Rischad Whitfield (also know as “Footwork King”), his unique prowess in these areas is no accident.

“Quartney has a lot of sudden quickness,” Whitfield explained. “If you watch closely to a lot of the games he plays, he can’t be pressed. His releases off of the line are just insane.”

After years of training the Texas A&M receiver — it dates back to his sophomore year in high school — Whitfield’s praise didn’t stop there.

“I’ve been training with Quartney for so long that he’s able to come out here in Houston where I’m training pros, and gets to workout with a lot of professional receivers like Emmanuel Sanders, Marcus Johnson, and Eric Ebron. I’ve also trained a lot with Oklahoma’s Ceedee Lamb (who many consider the top receiver in the draft class). Being out in this environment he knows how to play fast and with pace. He belongs with all those names.”

Coming from someone who has helped coach NFL stars like Odell Beckham and Joe Haden, that praise is certainly worth listening to, especially when it matches up with the film. In Davis’ case, it more than does.

“He’s a special player,” Whitfield concluded. “I just don’t understand how more people aren’t talking about him.”

PROS: Crisp! There’s very little wasted movement in Davis’ game — impressive control of his body, steps and breaks to sufficiently snap off his route stems and create significant separation, regardless of whether that comes on hard angled breaks back to the LOS, speed outs into the boundary or shallow adjustments across the face of defenders squatting at the top of the route. Davis is flashing much more production early on in 2019 and with continued production could make a significant push to consider declaring — his route tree, exposure and techniques to create space in the secondary all suggest there’s notable next level potential. Davis moves a little bit like Deebo Samuel — he’s a taller player but watching him operate in releases and breaks brings me flashbacks to Samuel at South Carolina…and Davis is quick, too. Very easy accelerator who gets up to top speed quickly against off coverage to eat up space and force defenders to respect his ability to get vertical. A&M has moved him around in alignments — he’s not handcuffed to one side of the line of scrimmage or slot versus boundary or field in order to successfully stack coverage and get separation. Footwork and body control along the boundary will definitely capture your attention, too.

CONS: Davis has some notable injuries on his ledger that could threaten draft stock, including a 2016 torn ACL suffered ahead of the 2016 season — forcing him to redshirt. Davis also has missed one game thus far in 2019 on account of a back injury, so medicals are something to keep an eye on.

Since we need, at least, 1 CB in this draft (again, from “thedraftnetwork”):

For more than half of the NFL, it is officially draft season. The pre-draft cycle starts with several all-star games following the college football season, but none bigger than the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. We are just over two weeks away from weigh-in day and the first practices, and in the lead up to that week, several players are accepting final invites to the game.

Many of those players in recent days have been defensive backs, so I put the spotlight on three cornerbacks with little notoriety, but after the Senior Bowl, their stocks could skyrocket.

    Michael Ojemudia, Iowa

I have been preaching the gospel of Iowa’s Michael Ojemudia since the summer, and now that he’s accepted a Senior Bowl invite. I’m glad everyone else is going to be able to see him shine even more. At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Ojemudia is a long, rocked-up CB who played a combination of different coverages for the Hawkeyes. In press man, Ojemudia’s play strength made life difficult for wide receivers to get off cleanly at the line of scrimmage. In off-man and zone coverage, his eye discipline and quick diagnoses put him in a strong position to make plays on the ball. The one-on-one period in Mobile will be a good test for him. I’m still unsure about his overall twitch and foot quickness, but his physicality in all aspects of the game will stand out immediately.

Another impressive aspect of Ojemudia’s game is his back to ball technique. I noticed a couple of times on tape he struggled to locate the ball over his shoulder and subsequently disrupt the catch point without drawing a penalty. When he’s reading routes and patterns in front of him, he has an excellent instinctive feel for where the ball is going. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when he’s forced to flip and turn vertical. I may be in the minority here, but I think Ojemudia could be a legitimate NFL safety. He is one of the top run defending cornerbacks in this class, and he has experience playing inside and out in man coverage. We will learn a lot about Ojemudia in Mobile, and I have a feeling scouts and coaches will be buzzing about the Iowa senior throughout the week.

    Thakarius Keyes, Tulane

Let me preface this by saying Thakarius Keyes has not formally accepted his Senior Bowl invite, but he said last week he did receive an invitation. If Keyes is indeed heading to Mobile, then I can tell you right now he’ll be the cornerback that everyone is talking about when the week is over. Keyes measures a 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, has vines for arms and is a nightmare for opposing receivers. Press man coverage teams are going to fall in love with his tape — of all the CBs I’ve watched this year, Keyes is one of the best at re-routing, jamming and disrupting the timing of the WR’s path. He uses his length to engulf opponents without being too wild or out of control. Keyes’ timing and hand placement are superb, and he is consistently on balance to break underneath or match verticals stride for stride.

With big, oversized receiver prospects like Collin Johnson and Bryan Edwards set to participate in Mobile, Keyes has a chance to stand out and show off his press man skillset against strong competition in the one-on-one period, similar to how Lonnie Johnson performed last year. Keyes’ ability to consistently re-route opponents at the line of scrimmage while also staying disciplined with his back to the ball to locate over his shoulder could be one of the biggest stories of the receiver-cornerback matchups in practice throughout the week. There, we will find out if the jump in competition was too steep for Keyes. If it’s not, get ready to hear his name squarely in Day 2 conversations.

    Reggie Robinson, Tulsa

If Tulsa’s Reggie Robinson does the Ric Flair strut after breaking up a pass or recording an interception at the Senior Bowl, he is immediately the top player on my 2020 draft board. Those are the rules.

Robinson is another one of these long, wiry CBs who makes life extremely difficult for receivers at the line of scrimmage. His combination of length, play strength, timing and foot quickness gives him multiple ways to win in press man coverage. Having this skill set to both jam with his length and mirror with his twitch is a major plus. One of the biggest things Robinson did for his draft stock was making plays on the ball. After not recording a single interception in his junior year, Robinson tallied four, as well as 13 pass deflections, which ranked in the top 10 among all FBS defenders.

Ball production doesn’t always mean a defensive back has good ball skills, but in this case, Robinson is a natural playmaker who got more opportunities to make plays as a senior. Whether it’s locating the ball over his shoulder, breaking underneath or baiting quarterbacks in zone, Robinson’s knack for disrupting the catch point should be on full display in Mobile. The big test will be if he can avoid getting outmuscled and boxed out by bigger receivers in jump ball situations, as most of his opponents at the Senior Bowl will be that archetype on the perimeter. I’m also not sure how fast he is, so closing vertical separation during those one-on-one looks will increase his stock. If Robinson puts up a consistent week of tape for scouts, watch for his name to rise up boards quickly.

The Dolphins have the most 2020 cap space in the NFL.

The three highest cap numbers are Reshad Jones ($15,630,000), Xavien Howard ($13,325,000)and Albert Wilson ($10,833,334). (McCain is 4th $6,240,400)

Howard’s 2020 $11,900,000 base salary becomes fully guaranteed March 18. His recent legal entanglement considered, do the Dolphins move on from him prior to the guarantee? He may be facing a suspension from the NFL.

The Dolphins biggest bang for the buck is Albert Wilson. His pre-June 1 cut/trade cap savings is $9,500,000 with $1,333,334 dead money. By comparison, Minkah roughly $5 million and Kiko $3 million in dead money. Wilson was ranked 93rd WR by PFF with a 62.3 grade. He’s 27 years old.

Similarly, Allen Hurns ($2,958,333) pre-June 1 cut/trade cap savings is $2,091,666 with $866,667 dead money. PFF ranks him 106th WR with a 57 grade. He’s 28 years old.

I can’t predict what the Dolphins will do, though by saving more cap space quality free agents become more affordable.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think all are keepers given the cap space we have now. Not sure about Rashad as I believe all his guaranteed money has been paid. Don’t think there is trade value there. Maybe they could get him to restructure for more guaranteed money and a smaller cap hit. WHo knows.

THE “O” IN BUFFALO STILL STANDS FOR SUPER BOWL WINS!!!
That said, I think my man Singletary still had a really good game. He’s become a much better pass catcher than he was at FAU.
    ——————————
The next game, Tennessee at the Cheats, features a couple of back-up place kickers. Probably WON’T come down to that, though.
    C’MON, Tanny, beat the Cheats!!

That blindside block penalty on Buffalo in overtime was BS though. Changed the game and took them out of FG range.

TIM: A football writer said if the scouts were convinced Singletary could consistently catch the ball, he would have been drafted in the 2nd round. But,when you’ve got a guy who scored 66 TD’s running the ball, YOU KEEP GIVING IT TO HIM, N’est pas???
This kid has not yet reached his full potential, believe me.

Sometime before the Super Bowl the NFL will drop another shoe. I expect the Cheats will be FINED YET AGAIN and, perhaps, they’ll also lose a draft pick in the upcoming draft because of their latest violation of NFL policy. What a way to end a “dynasty.”

  87. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can actually kick back, enjoy the playoffs, and not really care how they unfold other than hoping Tanny, Henry and the Titans can slay another Giant next week in Baltimore.

  88. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“Henry gained 167 rushing yards after a defender closed within 1 yard, the most by a running back in a playoff game in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016).”

    Yeah, nothing special.

  89. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

As for Tanny, we saw all the same flaws he exhibited here, and he damn near cost the Titans the game twice. But he also threw a dart for a TD on the first drive, and if he doesn’t hit on that huge 3rd down at the end of the game, I think it likely the Patriots kick a game winning FG on their last possession. And that ball was out of his hands before the receiver was fully into his break, perfect throw when they needed it. He also had a big 3rd down run. His numbers may not be stellar, but he contributed in that win.

I’m happy for the guy. He has been a class act since he came into the league.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Same.

He’s always gonna get pissed on here, but I will always be in his corner.

Say whatever you want, but TN became a much better team when RT17 became their QB.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On that 3rd down play, he stared down the TE, so play call worked, he didn’t have to scan the field. The big 3rd down run, I didn’t see, but again, these are plays that fit his strengths. When you put him in position to win, he can, as long as he has help, and stays within himself.

It broke down here, because we had no running game, or OL, but look at Gase’s first year. The OL was good and Ajayi was lighting it up, so he won.

RT doesn’t suck, but he can’t do it like Brady or Manning did. I hope they beat Baltimore, but reality says in order to do that he’s going to have to be really good, and I don’t think he can be.

  90. New Age's avatar New Age says:

One of the most satisfying seasons in over a decade. All Pats fans I know disappeared near the end of the game. I’m loving it. It’s been a really good football year overall as someone said earlier. No Bama, no Pats, no GS. I hope all of them are done.

  91. canamdolphin's avatar Philip Bijeau says:

The Dolphins dismantling of the Patriots last week stands as the best display of AFC East football to date! The Pats thought they were “IT” and the Bills thought they were the next “IT”. With a shrewd draft and free agency, the Dolphins are poised to replace both of these imposters.

  92. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If indeed this is the End of the Dynasty, it will be interesting to watch their “fanbase” disintegrate.

First, the bandwagon people will shift to whomever they think is likely to win. This began during the Dolphins victory. I was in RI and Boston for that game and the following few days and heard people abandoning them even then.

This accelerated during the Titans beat down. Arrogance does not generate mojo.

Then the Fair Weather fans will drift away over a season even if it is just a breakeven year.

Let’s see how much of a core remains with NE if they go into a cycle of mediocrity.

i’m proud that i have stuck with my team during tough times.

It is hard to cheer for, because their actions are so sordid, but it is fitting that the Cheats are failing on all 3 levels.

Their owner has been publicly disgraced,
Their HC has been exposed as an incurable cheater.
Their team is unexciting to watch, uninspired on the field, and led by a has-been.
