Safeties – Current depth chart and needs

Creating a depth chart at this juncture is really an exercise in futility because odds are we will be changing personnel there both from free agency and then the draft and also because the uncertainty of whether long time S Reshad Jones will return. This is how I see it if Reshad comes back.

S – Eric Rowe , Bobby McCain

S – Reshad Jones, Stephen Parker

In free agency there are a lot of older safeties on the market but there a few younger ones that might be able to help. Damarious Randall has played CB and S for both GB and the Browns, the last 2 years at safety with the Browns. Justin Simmons is a big safety at 6’2 220 and has played both FS and SS. Simmons has 11 INT’s for the Broncos in 4 seasons and last year which is arguably his best season he had 15 pass break ups. Anthony Harris who played for the Vikings for the last 4 seasons played his last season exclusively at safety after splitting time the previous seasons at CB and S. He also had his best season with 6 INT’s. HaHa Clinton-Dix is also a FA and has toiled at S for the Packers, Skins and Bears. He’s only 27, I thought he was older. Tre Boston is also available. Our own Walt Aikens is a FA and I won’t be surprised in the least if he returns here, mostly as a special teams ace.

In the draft, we will have a shot at the best safeties but as you know, we have higher priorities on other positions so I don’t expect us to take a safety until at least the 2nd RD. Supposedly there is a big drop in talent after the first tier. Xavier McKinney from Alabama and Grant Delpit from LSU are the 2 highest rater with McKinney at the top, followed by Antoine Winfield who is only 5’9 with short arms. Ashtyn Davis, Kyle Dugger and Julian Blackmon round out the field.

An awful lot will depend on whether the Dolphins want Reshad back and whether he has the desire to return this season. It seems as though the Bobby McCain experiment is over and he will return to nickel corner which leaves us pretty thin at the position. There are so many more safeties that Flores might have his eye on both in FA and the draft, but we do need to get some depth there for sure and if Reshad isn’t back, a starting caliber player for sure.

Have any of you seen the renderings of the draft stage in Las Vegas? Insane! They’re creating a stage in the fountains at the Bellagio and supposedly they’re going to have a boat bring the Prospects to the stage when they’re name is called. Here’s a pic of the stage that they might build.

GO DOLPHINS!!

I’m going out on a limb here.
Based on everything and before anything.
My line of disappointment is 8-8.
Anything less will be failure. 9-7 will be successful. IMHO

I am actually predicting 10-6 … IF we get a stud RB.
    Wild card in the play-offs,
but only if we get a new RB who gets at least 800 yds rushing. & at least 6 TDs.

Naples, I thought Feaster was staying in college. That’s why I don’t use first pick much. I prefer thedraftnetwork simulator. They are constantly updating it and even after pro days they made more updates on their rankings. You just can’t make trades unless you pay.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Feaster is listed as one of your draft picks as being from Clemson,
but he transferred from Clemson to USC because he was behind Etienne and the freshman.

I do not know whether he declared for the 2020 draft.

I’m seeing a lot of angst about FA, the draft and what our 2020 results might be. This is just Phase II of the rebuilding process. We’re going to be adding a lot more rooks and young players this offseason. There is no pressure yet with what our record will be because building a potential playoff or championship caliber team doesn’t happen after one year of blowing it up. Just some food for thought.

  23. Stanger, yes the market had its worst point drop ever, actually the 10 worst drops ever have occurred in the last 3 and a half years

wall street is in a state of panic because they are being lied to and bilked out of their money, Larry Kudlow said buy the dips, two WEEKS ago!
that is SHIT ADVICE from an administration with no empathy or knowledge of damn near any subject

then the daily lying ,ignorance , denial, and mixed messages, coming from a follower that didnt think we needed pandemic controls or personnel, is making the wall street news. this does the opposite of calm investors.
trump lives in ignorance and denial, doesnt seem to care much about dead Americans stacking up, because, well ya know, that hurts his reelection chances.
after returning from India, high risk potus spread his germs and ilk around orlando, while touting his travel bans as keeping this under control.
he lied and claimed a week back that this would all be gone in 2 days! ignroance and denial are not leadership the country needs

the markets will remain in turmoil until a competent leader is in charge, or if the one in charge just gives them tons of socialist handouts, welfare for billionaires

republicans dont like needy American taxpayers on welfare, only billionaires that dont pay taxes should receive it
it was too easy to predict 4 years back, because all republicans put us into recession with their tax and spend welfare for tax free billionaires , wars, and oil

we are not prepared for this , My doctor told me they just got test kits in YESTERDAY, SMH

we need to vote for real leadership, someone with guts and intelligence to lead this nation, anyone but the orange Donald Mcdonald
narcissism , ignorance, denial, and passing the buck , isnt leadership

Stanger try the bear funds etfs, or the corona virus stocks, or risk losing most all of Your money to the no tax paying billionaires on welfare

once we have a stable and trustworthy president again, the country can recover

  25. “America will never be a socialist country,” President Trump said as he launched his bid for re-election last week.

That declaration was an effort to frighten Americans and undermine growing support for expanding Medicare and Social Security—two popular programs that have long been derided as “socialist.” Mr. Trump’s declaration hypocritically ignores that he and his Republican colleagues are the nation’s leading purveyors of an insidious form of corporate socialism, which uses government power and taxpayer resources to enrich,,,,,

and yea, people do have a right to be pissed off at the trump tiny mushroom sucker trumptards that are destroying America, its THEIR fault for not knowing how the shit show would end, when they should have known

obviously these shills hate being pointed out for being clueless and wrong, and will double down on lies and ignorance to defend the indefensible

Clint Clearwater who writes for the Phinsiders had an interesting draft scenario in his last mock. 2 teams, Carolina traded up to 3 with the Lions to take Tua and the Chargers traded up to 4 with the Giants to take Justin Herbert, which means we come away with LB Isaiah Simmons. At #18 we trade back 2 spots, JAX takes Javon Kinlaw at #18 and we take A.J. Epenesa at #20. At #26 we take OT Josh Jones. I don’t think I’d have a problem if things fell this way.

I cautiously like Dobbins, but have concerns over his production drop when not having a QB to run RPO. Still had over a 1,000yds w/ Haskins at WB, but his YPC dropped 2.6ypc from his freshman year then jumped back up 2.1ypc after Fields and his ability in the RPO came along. Big discrepancy, IMO, that has me more in favor of Taylor.

  40. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    I agree dbolt.

I think Cam Akers is the sleeper we want as our second RB pick, maybe in the 4th .
Swift or Taylor in the late 1st or early 2nd, then Akers or Dillon in the 4th or preferably the 5th.

We need RBs who strike fear in the defense. Make ’em scheme for us.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

There’s no real understanding the market other than knowing it is purely speculative in the short run. Stanger has it right…you can’t react in the short term, except to buy when it dips then hold on for the long haul. Otherwise you’re just day-trading and the house almost always wins.

  42. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Naples,
I like Akers also…I have a preference for HBs who go against stacked boxes w/ little QB help. They’re forced to find their way through an entire D vs a good chunk of the D being occupied by another player.

      Or trade up

I don’t mean the early picks
But I think maybe moving up from 3rd and 4th round

What if we can pick up another 2nd?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have the picks to target special throughout the draft if we choose to go with quality over quantity. 14 could end up being 9. I’m not sure turning 14 into 17-18 is the way to go. We’ve already got a good draft in 2021 as well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s possible between drafts picks and UDFAs. I expect around 20-25 new players. That obviously means about half of our team will be new in 2020. Maybe 10 new vets and 10-15 rooks. We’re not in a phase to go for it all but you never know how that will go down. Sports are so predictable.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Great point and I expect to see either that or some trade ups. I don’t see us even drafting 10 guys but the new CBA could change my thinking. Having up to 55 on game day and 12 on the practice squad means those lower picks could net some guaranteed lower level talent who don;t get to choose where they’d go. It’s still a huge number of guys and I just can’t see it.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Patriots get league-high four compensatory picks, including two third-rounders

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run. Them, the Ravens, the Steelers always let players walk and get compensated well for doing so. They never overpay 2nd or 3rd contracts

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If this were to happen, we would have had to acquired some defensive help in FA.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m not buying Detroit, we don’t need to trade up to get Tua unless another team leap frogs us which i find unlikely.
detroit will draft Okuda as they desperately need CB help.
the Giants are not in the market for a QB and will probably take the BPA at 4, last time they traded up or back was to get Eli.
redskins will either take Tua or Chase Young.
no matter what there is no need to trade up to get Tua, if he’s there and you want him then pull the trigger, if not go to plan B.

you dont give up 2 first rnders for one player!

  49. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – The trade up for Tua was our #5 and our 2nd RD pick #39. Not really a lot to get your franchise QB hopefully for a decade or so. I’d prefer not to trade up but that trade up wouldn’t kill me.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i just hate getting fleeced, you can’t focus on one player at all costs and i’m sure it will take more than #39 to make such a move, the chargers or another team may be interested in moving up with detroit among other teams, if i were miami i would throw out interest in Okuda to make detroit think about trading back and not getting their guy, in fact put okuda opposite X and we’ll have a great combo there. flores places high value on dbs, at any rate a great player will be there for us at 5 and we already have 2 qbs.

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With anything close to 14 rookies drafted and making the team, it doesn’t make sense to go after top tier FAs. I mean what are you trying to accomplish a continued rebuild or just enough to sniff the playoffs? And you don’t do a complete rebuild in year 1, then abort the process in year 2. But of course you have the U75s of the world out there saying we will be signing top tier FAs.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we spend some in FA but I don’t think we buy a new team or get anyone who sets the market at their position.

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When KC went from worst to first a few years ago they had 5 Probowlers on the team, just had some injuries. We’ve got next to nothing.

On O we’ve Parker, William’s, and Gesicki. On D we have Howard, Wilkins, and Baker. Not exactly a plethora of talent.

  53. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

looking at last years trading action by grier i think it’s safe to assume we will be moving around in the draft whether that be up or down.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – bringing in top tier young players makes sense, which is why in all my articles I didn’t list any FA’s older than 28

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t bring in top tier FAs until you’re ready to be a contender. Anything earlier is throwing cap space away.

  55. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

when the season started it was scrambled eggs, the team was very new, players had limited game time exp with each other, the last 9 games we went 5-4.

i do believe there’s talent on this team and i think to blame lack of success on lack of talent is lame.
coaching is the difference between good teams and bad teams, not talent.

most of these “high priced” fa are a product of their environment. take arik armstead, how good will he be without bosa and the rest of their DL?

how about Tuhney? brady is great at knowing where he’s going before the play starts, he gets rid of the ball so quickly that the dl doesn’t have time to get to him yet you see tuhnney boasting about the fact he’s had little holding penaltys and sacks.

So we finally released Jones. I’ve been saying we should do that for a couple of years now. Not release but trade him while he still had decent value. Oh well . . .

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Actually thought that wouldn’t happen given how his contract was set up. Maybe they are just giving him a chance to find another team.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Or they decided to take the hit while they were flush, rather than have him potentially blocking the progress of a young player.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Possible Phelon — or maybe they saw things in practice we didn’t or just didn’t like his attitude. He was a real solid player for us though.

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Josh Jones is way down Pauline’s list too at #56, and he has him listed at G, not T

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I disagree with that one, also.
Jones is raw, mainly because he’s had like 17 OL coaches,
but he has serious athletic skills to play the quick tackle.
I’d love to have him for the New NFL with mobile QBs
who can chip in with designed runs and RPOs.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I understand what you guys are saying about the TE position just finally being utilized correctly or at all post-Gase-ass, but we only have 2 3rd yr guys in Gesicki and Smythe, plus the project Myarick from last year’s PSquad. That’s extremely thin at the position.

We need another move TE or seam buster another semi OT type blocker and let Smythe out into the patterns more.

A team can’t go into the season with only 2 TEs on the 53 because then there is no sub for fatigue or injury, unless they are gonna count Wilkins or the FB.

  64. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Who couldn’t see this one coming?

“Retired football star Rob Gronkowski signed a deal with WWE. The former New England Patriots tight end “officially” entered a contract with the pro wrestling organization and will make his debut on Fox’s “SmackDown” March 20.”

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree with you guys on Reshad above.

Seemed to me like he was a Peter Principle type player.
He’d achieved his ceiling, and he and the coaches knew it.

He had a nice run, but when a guy is maxed out talent-wise and then loses a step,
that’s pretty much it for him.

Bellicheat always knew that moment and let those guys walk
and picked up the comps to replace them..

    A 5th round over-achiever can be replaced by a 4th – 5th round comp pick.
If it’s just a couple 3 each year, the new guys can be integrated into the system smoothly.
That’s how NE reloads with no loss in momentum.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He would be on this team if we were really thinking about competing. But the windows just didn’t match up. And yeah that probably includes him on his way down the other side of the mountain.

    • D's avatar D says:

Disagree that a 5th round overachiever can be replaced by a 4-5th comp pick. Those guys are rare you can’t expect to find one just wherever. The fact that it’s downhill for him at this point is a true statement. Could have possibly stuck with him another year or so but the time to get out and also let him have his chance to land on a contender is now. No reason to drag it out.

I was citing the Master, the Evil Genius. Hard to disagree with his achievements.

I’ll go with Bill Bellichick’s record on replacing good players and maintaining a high level on the field. He seems to have no trouble finding a guy to replace Ty Law or Mike Vrabel or the WR he stole from us. (Welker) Or the LB. And he cashes the comps.

He coached multiple marginal or star players up beyond their talent then ditched them the year before they faded and found anouther one. RB, WR, DB, LB, OL, edge,

even Bledsoe. Found Brady in the 6th.

Did a quick mock on draft network and came out with this.

    My Picks
    5 Tua Tagovailoa, QB

    18 A.J. Epenesa, EDGE

    26 Jonathan Taylor, RB

    39 Cesar Ruiz, IOL

    56 Ashtyn Davis, S

    70 Ezra Cleveland, OT

    141 Ben Bredeson, IOL

    153 Anfernee Jennings, EDGE

    162 Lamical Perine, RB

    173 Devin Duvernay, WR

    185 Antonio Gandy-Golden, WR

    197 Lavert Hill, CB

    246 Jacob Breeland, TE

    251 Robert Windsor, IDL

Think the team definitely increased physicality here.

QUIZ OF THE DAY– What player currently on the roster has been with the team the longest?

No search and not if you read today rules in effect.

  68. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Reshad Jones was a really good player for this team. One of the best, actually, if you look at his stats. Best of luck to him. It will not be easy to replace what he did when healthy. He’s an aging vet who probably isn’t a good fit for this team right now, so I have no problem with the move. But, he will definitely be hard to replace.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ive always said this about Reshad, he is one time when you call a player a hybrid you are talking about him doing both things very well. Really high football IQ, and has instincts you cant teach. Do i feel its still a good parting time, yes, but we aren’t replacing him with just any dude from any place, we are going to have to aim high if we want someone right off that can somewhat fill his shoes.

Thats what i was saying in my reply, can you, yes, but is it likely, not even close. You are also talking about a man who may be the best coach in football history (im sure OD and a few others will light me up for saying that) so he is really good at finding the right guys for his systems, we havent had anyone that has shown the ability to consistently do that and neither have man other teams. I didnt mean it to sound like an attack or anything, but i do not believe that you can have the expectation of replacing any starting quality player with a mid round guy, with any sort of certainty.
