QB’s – Current depth chart and needs

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Josh Rosen

Jake Rudock

So there you have it. 15 year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick who is clearly the #1 choice as the starter at the moment, followed by 2 year veteran Josh Rosen who has played in all of 20 games starting 16 and doing so with a record of 3-13. Of course that record must be taken in context as he was playing for an awful team in Arizona for a HC that was fired after just one season. Jake Rudock was signed to a 1YR deal for $600K and he rounds out the depth chart.

Fitzpatrick had an uneven season, sitting behind Josh Rosen until the Fest game where Rosen was pulled and Fitzpatrick took over the reins for the rest of the season as the starter. He finished really strong, developing a strong relationship with WR DeVante Parker, who really grew in leaps in bound last season. I don’t want to ruin the upcoming WR article but the duo of Fitzpatrick and Parker from game #10-#16 totaled 39 receptions for 733 yards for a crazy 18.7 YPC and 5 TD’s. That’s a season for some guys right there. Mike Gesicki also had a very nice season and Fitzpatrick had a lot to do with that as well.

What to do with Josh Rosen? The best answer is probably nothing right now as his value couldn’t really be diminished any more than it already has so we just have to hope he has better things to show us. He needs to show a lot of improvement in camp and in the preseason and let him continue to build on that. There shouldn’t be any pressure for him regarding the starting job because if Ryan Fitzpatrick is healthy, he’s the QB, there is no uncertainty there. Of course if Rosen played out of his mind he may force a different outcome but no one really expects that to happen.

There are so many different ways to view the draft and the QB’S that may be available to us. My preference is to stay where we are and let the players fall as they will. I don’t want to trade multiple picks to get Burrow and I’d rather not trade multiple picks to get Tua, although the value to potentially get to #3 with Detroit shouldn’t cost more than our #5 and and our #39 pick. I could tolerate that, but the more I consider Justin Herbert or Jordan Love or even Jacob Eason or Jalen Hurts later on, as long as we have a solid foundation after free agency and the draft, I’d feel fine with any of those guys knowing none of them have the pressure to start this season. We can develop them and see what we’ve got and still be able to draft a QB next season providing we don’t trade away any future draft capital.

I’m excited for the draft, even if no one is there live, that doesn’t matter to me. All I care about is WHO we draft, not whether they hug the commissioner. It’s possible due to COVID-19 that free agency will be postponed, because part of the process is meeting team’s staffs and also checking out the neighborhoods, schools etc. If travel is limited or shut down completely, all that stuff can’t happen. I suppose they could do video conferencing but it can’t be the same as meeting a guy in person and of course seeing the sites around town and feeling the lifestyle of sunny Florida. I’m open to taking a QB early and I’m even more open to taking one later after we got some top OL and defensive players and maybe a RB. Next up is WR’s followed by TE’s.

GO DOLPHINS!!

    Good article Mike,

I think we are set at QB for the fore-see-able future, we have Rosen for the next 2 years on a great contract and who’s to say; with an OL that protects him he may be great. Fitz right now is probably better than any QB in the draft.

i see our needs as>>>> OL>>>Edge>>>>DBs in that order.

if Tua is there at 5 it wouldn’t upset me if they take him however if i were calling the shots i would do my best to trade back if the value we obtain is substantial.

there will be other drafts and other qbs down the road, we are set at qb right now, if we draft Tua he will not make an immediate impact.

keep the early picks coming in as so far Grier has a track record of doing.

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Not to be too nit-picky Mike E but Fitz did not sit behind Rosen at the start of the season. He started wks 1&2 and got pulled the 4th quarter of the Pat’s game (game 2) then Rosen came in and stank up the next 3 games so we went back to Fitz.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s OK – I don’t mind. I totally forgot, my recollection was that he started the season. Good catch

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

IMO we definitely need to draft a QB this year. I just hope they pick the right one and do not give up too much to get him. Let the new guy battle it out with Rosen who hasn’t shown he is the solution yet and may the best guy win. (the #2 spot) then next off-season roll with the winner and let Fitz ride off into the sun-set.

Although Isaiah Simmons is not built like Junior Seau at 6-3 250, I think Simmons (6-3 235) is similar in the way he played the game – find the ball as a rusher or in space. I’m so sick of Tua or not.

I’m glad the draft should be after most of this Corona stuff is wrapping up. I feel bad for all the athletes that just had their entire season wiped out prematurely. Maybe they reconsider…

Back to football, I still don’t see how a team eats a massive amount of their future to move up for a guy with tons of college injuries and I find it very likely we get Tu’a at 5. That’s it for my QB talk but it will be very fun just because we have so many picks. About 6 more weeks?!

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My wife got an email from the place I used to work (she was a patient there) saying they’re taking every precaution and doing everything possible to minimize the risk of spreading the corona virus. I tell my wife that’s a bunch of shit, they’re probably doing nothing, and I mean nothing,

An hour later I’m on Facebook and a former coworker has this rant about how there hasn’t been a single communication with any of the the employees, not ONE and that all he’s doing is washing his hands and wiping down his phone, desk etc, and that he feels like just quitting because they haven’t even addressed this. What a fucking joke! Truth is, my new place hasn’t done a thing either, but we’re not sending out emails that it’s safe because we’re doing everything we can to minimize the risk.

I agree with those above that want Tua at 5, but not higher and wouldn’t mind getting some stud at another position like Simmons or the OSU CB.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Okudah and Simmons for me are right there with Tua, to take at 5, for that matter whoever we take there should be a great player at a position of need.

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I saw a mock the other day and they talked about Burrow having a weak arm, that’s a red flag for me. He had one great year in a system that was setup perfect for him. What happens next year when he’s in another system? Drew Brees uses that same system, he wasn’t so great in SD in another system.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What if we get Tua at 5, and Burrow turns out to be less than a very good QB and Tua is who we thought he was? Then we’d have the best of both worlds, Tua without tanking and a team on the rise, which attracts FAs.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watched a video yesterday of week 17 game. Glad to see Ford was rendered. Want him to jump Grant, if he hasn’t already.

Parker, Williams, Wilson, Hurns, Ford. No reason to draft WR.

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d have no problem drafting Jalen Hurts, after we get a stud at 5.

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was thinking this morning about Tua, and my thoughts went back to the time when we had a shot at Drew Brees but chose Culpepper because we were concerned about his shoulder. Imagine if we pass on Tua at #5 and then he has success similar to Drew Brees? We’d never hear the end of it.

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I’m looking forward to seeing more out of Ruddock and Rosen in this new system. I liked what I saw out of Ruddock last preseason, TBH.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If we draft a QB you probably won’t see much of Rosen or Rudock at all. lol

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You are probably right if we draft one early. If we draft one mid rounds, it’s game on for Rosen, Ruddock and the rookie.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        Yup, that’s what I meant

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t agree with that. 2020 is for Fitz, as long as he’s getting it done and we’re staying at 500 or better. The other 3 will all be competing for life after Fitz, presumably 2021, but might be earlier. Let the best man win. I think Flores has been pretty clear, those getting it done will move up regardless of draft status.

I’m looking forward to seeing Rosen compete with an OL and something that resembles a running game.

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, Re: your mocks last night. First one, replace Tua with Simmons and it is a Grand Slam! Second one, since you got Chaisson, replace Espenesa with an OT at #26 and it’s another one out of the park!. Just my preferences though.

  40. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Fitz would be getting the majority of practice snaps and then most likely followed by new QB and Rosen, right?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Initially that may be the plan, but Flores isn’t going to stunt Rosen’s growth, if he sees real progress. I’m just saying nothing is cast in stone, it will all play out based on who is getting it done.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya man, BBMike wanted to see more of Rudock too and he would likely be out of the picture

Burrow’s arm isn’t weak it’s on the stronger side of average. Tua has a much stronger arm, Love’s is about the same as Tua Eason has the cannon this year. Herbert is on the same level as Burrow.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Herbert has a 60 mph arm per the power meter at the combine,
tied with Eason for strongest arm in combine.
He also impressed with his deep balls in the combine.

He also ran a 4.68 40 and jumped 3 ft in the vert. This at 6’6 236.

I honestly would be fine with Herbert at 10

I don’t like the Niang pick at 26 though
Sub in another OT and it’s a much better draft

We don’t need more picks though
We can probably move into the 2nd from the 3rd if we really want to with all of our picks

And we can probably move into the 3rd from the 4th as well

We have the ammo to have 7 or 8 picks before round 3 is finished

Imagine if we nabbed QB, RB, Edge, DL, DB and 2-3 OL in those rounds

We have that kind of ammo
So why move down from 5

Herbert has a 60 mph arm per the power meter at the combine,
tied with Eason for strongest arm in combine.

He also impressed with his deep balls in the combine.

He also ran a 4.68 40 and jumped 3 ft in the vert. This at 6’6 236.

I think all of these guys could have something left in the tank to tide us over at a position until we could draft the player we really want to build with,

Even if they are used in spots to show how it’s done, that might be good.

That way, we don’t have to play a rook at every position in one year.

Or maybe do that and have fun with it.
Maybe these FAs are just progress blockers for the young guys.

But many of them have experience on playoff teams that they could convey to a room.

    I’m ambivalent.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Godchaux and Wilkins are the interior DL we’re building with. Jenkins was already a steady vet for the young guys but I can see us adding competition at DT in FA and the draft.

I’m glad we tendered DL Zach Sieler. He made some nice plays for us as a role player. He gives us some height and grit in a rotation.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree … I think he has skills, he’s young enough to build with, he has some hops (batted down some passes) and a good motor.

I’m thinking I’d like to get all new guys in and skip FA almost entirely,
but with all that cap space, we should probably buy a couple guys.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even if we add a couple of vets at edge and interior it could be middle tier which is still good money but not top contracts. Add that to a mostly young group and that could be pretty good.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

A+ that’s kind of exactly what I want, then a RB and an interior OL in the 2nd

I would mind if we take DL or DB instead of any of those pics

But those 3 players are kind of what I have mocked too

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think when you look at character makeup Jackson & Tua will be a match w/ Flores. I have a feeling Espensa or Gross-Matos might fit a little better, but I wouldn’t complain if the draft played out like that. Depending how FA shakes out I wouldn’t be shocked if Miami picked up a high level center in the first instead of an end.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was looking at some prospects as possibilities last night and I had a scenario where we possibly draft these exact three guys. 😉

Now they’ve started saying Rivera will take Tua to start over like Arizona took the little guy last year and shipped us Rosen.

Some mocks are therefore showing us Love @ #5 (instead of Herbert).

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not stuck on any one QB, I’m fine with whichever guy we go with. Just don’t trade the draft to get him

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

agreed … no reason to go all in on Burrow with Tua on the board. And Herbert will be a fine pro and Love might be the next Mahomes or at least Dak, so there’s plenty to choose from among those 4 guys.

Or just punt on QB , enjoy a little more Magic
and stock up this year on OL, edge, and RB where we have truly inferior talent.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You know what Naples, I’d be fine with that too. We don’t have a mandate to get a QB this year, but if we don’t get one this year we kind of have to get one next draft, but we’ll be set up well to do that. I would enjoy thoroughly filling lots of holes with upgraded talent in the draft.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I just think this deraft and FA is gonna be lots of fun and very exciting, as long as they don’t pick up 4 WRs, 3 guys in FA setting the market @ $100M, each or Jameis Winston.

in my opinion NFL free agency will not start on the 18th, it will be postponed. doing so may hurt the NFL brand, all these people sick, the financial markets crashing, people losing their jobs over this virus and at the same time the NFL handing out miilions of dollars to free agents.

that doesn’t bode well for the NFL’s brand.

  89. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I have to disagree Rob. I think people crave the distraction of sports. Since all the live sporting events will be cancelled people will be ravenous for anything that fills that void.

Yeah, that’s why I’ve always respected stanger as an athlete who probably knows what he’s talking about. Rugby is a much more physical game than today’s NFL. Rugby does have it’s more finesse positions but you need balls to play that game. Props.

Who knows we could go defense and OL with our 1st round picks and draft a QB like Jacob Eason in the 2nd round. Big QB with a big arm.
