QB’s – Current depth chart and needs

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Josh Rosen

Jake Rudock

So there you have it. 15 year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick who is clearly the #1 choice as the starter at the moment, followed by 2 year veteran Josh Rosen who has played in all of 20 games starting 16 and doing so with a record of 3-13. Of course that record must be taken in context as he was playing for an awful team in Arizona for a HC that was fired after just one season. Jake Rudock was signed to a 1YR deal for $600K and he rounds out the depth chart.

Fitzpatrick had an uneven season, sitting behind Josh Rosen until the Fest game where Rosen was pulled and Fitzpatrick took over the reins for the rest of the season as the starter. He finished really strong, developing a strong relationship with WR DeVante Parker, who really grew in leaps in bound last season. I don’t want to ruin the upcoming WR article but the duo of Fitzpatrick and Parker from game #10-#16 totaled 39 receptions for 733 yards for a crazy 18.7 YPC and 5 TD’s. That’s a season for some guys right there. Mike Gesicki also had a very nice season and Fitzpatrick had a lot to do with that as well.

What to do with Josh Rosen? The best answer is probably nothing right now as his value couldn’t really be diminished any more than it already has so we just have to hope he has better things to show us. He needs to show a lot of improvement in camp and in the preseason and let him continue to build on that. There shouldn’t be any pressure for him regarding the starting job because if Ryan Fitzpatrick is healthy, he’s the QB, there is no uncertainty there. Of course if Rosen played out of his mind he may force a different outcome but no one really expects that to happen.

There are so many different ways to view the draft and the QB’S that may be available to us. My preference is to stay where we are and let the players fall as they will. I don’t want to trade multiple picks to get Burrow and I’d rather not trade multiple picks to get Tua, although the value to potentially get to #3 with Detroit shouldn’t cost more than our #5 and and our #39 pick. I could tolerate that, but the more I consider Justin Herbert or Jordan Love or even Jacob Eason or Jalen Hurts later on, as long as we have a solid foundation after free agency and the draft, I’d feel fine with any of those guys knowing none of them have the pressure to start this season. We can develop them and see what we’ve got and still be able to draft a QB next season providing we don’t trade away any future draft capital.

I’m excited for the draft, even if no one is there live, that doesn’t matter to me. All I care about is WHO we draft, not whether they hug the commissioner. It’s possible due to COVID-19 that free agency will be postponed, because part of the process is meeting team’s staffs and also checking out the neighborhoods, schools etc. If travel is limited or shut down completely, all that stuff can’t happen. I suppose they could do video conferencing but it can’t be the same as meeting a guy in person and of course seeing the sites around town and feeling the lifestyle of sunny Florida. I’m open to taking a QB early and I’m even more open to taking one later after we got some top OL and defensive players and maybe a RB. Next up is WR’s followed by TE’s.

GO DOLPHINS!!

Id kind of like to get Brian Poole or trade for Darius Slay as far as a Cb addition. Desmond Trufant is another id be interested in.

I want a guy at CB who gets picks.
      Same with Safety.
I’m real tired of having whole games with no INTs.

      • D's avatar D says:

Slay has had 19 picks in94 starts.
Poole has a lot of PD’s, and did in college as well. Not as many picks, but he is also a NCB kinda player, not a full time outside guy. Still he has 5 picks in 31 starts.
Trufant has had 13 picks in 97 starts.

    Thanks, man.
I’m 68, so I do hope you are right about having a great future. LOL
These next 30 years should be very interesting.

I have been living in FL now since ’84, so half my life (-ish)

I was trying to agree with you on those CBs.

  6. D's avatar D says:

Ricky Wagner, RT, has been resigned by GB, so there goes one of the options.

  7. D's avatar D says:

Whole pace of this FA period seems slower, and not just us

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Teams might be learning how foolish they had gotten about throwing huge stacks of cash at guys like Suh.

Or maybe not when you look at the Cleveland Idiots signing of that TE.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Idris Elba tested positive.

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

unless they are offering a 2 this year and a 1 next year stay away from gurley, why bother and be on the hook for 2 years and after that eat 10 mil on a player with chronic knee issues.

we have enough draft picks anyway.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think his knee issues are that bad, but either way, they are buying picks and they have plenty of cap space to do it. The more top rookies you can get the better you cap situation will be 3-4 years down the road, Also, by the time you are dealing with other players coming up for contract, his dead cap number is just 4mil

  10. D's avatar D says:

Looks like NYG are going after Clowney. If he signs with them then his excuse for not wanting to be on the Phins is bunk because NYG is no where near a contender team.

  11. D's avatar D says:

If we could get Skura and maybe a OT, id feel good going into the draft with that as far as the OL is concerned. If we can get Gurley and some picks back to up our draft capital im going to be really happy with everything,Top it off with a guy like Clinton-Dix at S and one of the guys i listed at CB. we can fill the rest of the holes in the draft.I dont think any of those guys are bank breakers, talented but not top contracts. Trade for Slay might even get us a ROI pick, because we would be pulling in a contract the Lions want off the books.

  12. D's avatar D says:

    Conklin to the Browns 😦

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re going to draft OT and maybe sign a mid-tier one as well.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And I think we’ll sign an OT and both of us will be right. 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have a lot of picks to target a few OL even if some are not in the top rounds. I’m sure we also like some of the guys we already have, but need some upgrades.

  14. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

The Browns will soon be in “CAP” Hell and will slink back to there regular spot! #32

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know everyone has different opinions on Jesse Davis, but we did sign him last year to a 3 year $15M deal so he’ll be part of the OL in some way in 2020.

  16. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

If the fins are going to sign another OL, they better pick up the pace!

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

too much money … I’ll pass … a great rookie OG will be fine

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It seems we don’t want to pay the bigger deals for OL. We’re not going to build a top OL in one offseason anyway. We may sign another mid-tier OL in FA and then look to the draft.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We’ve tendered Biegel and Haack.

That’s good … save our picks for RBs an edge rusher, a LT, a Safety, and a TE.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I expected to sign at least one OL starter or maybe 2 in FA, so we’re halfway there.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah FA isn’t over. In fact it hasn’t officially started. LOL

But I don’t see us spending big from what I’ve seen or I think that would already be set up.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Sometimes rumors have legs.

  20. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If X gets his shit together that is a hell of a tandem of CBs

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah. I was wrong thinking we’d be all in on corners. But like I said above, and our new DC was our secondary coach, it seems we want to play a lot of press and blitz.

  21. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not the way I would’ve gone, but with 2 shutdown CBs it allows us to get real creative on D, with blitz packages and other things.

  23. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

This texans coach/gm is killing that team!

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

wow that is a bit high for my taste.
    Is he worth it?
    He’s 27, runs a 4.36 40, and he’s 6’1.
But he only has 2 career INTs.
Is he one who forces QBs to not throw to his guy?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Byron Jones, that is.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Reply to your question is that’s what everyone says. He doesn’t get many picks but he covers all types of WRs and TEs within game plans and keeps them at bay. He’s a talented matchup guy who plays tight and physical and he can tackle. Jones and Howard are a dominant CB tandem. Let’s hope Jones’ durability continues and X can clean up his knee issue and stay relatively healthy.

Now watch we trade X. LOL

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Now we need a double digit sack guy.

It’s going to be weird having talent again.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know a lot of fans here are kind of meh on McCain, but he’s a dog when he doesn’t play with a shoulder injury which clearly affected him last year before being shutdown. Along with Rowe and Needham, that’s 5 good DBs right there. They all tackle too which is a priority with Belichick, and Flores learned under that as did DC Boyer. Don’t see us going CB in the 1st round. Safety maybe.

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Miami signs tom brady!

  29. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

16.5 per is less than reported, so it’s not horrible, since we aren’t paying a QB, and if we drafted Tua his 5 yrs would be offset.

  30. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Hope we can sign another OL

But Conklin is off the market and some of the guards never hit the market

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Everybody loves Wyoming players! 😉

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Would you rather have X who gives up some catches between the 20s, but will make up for it with lots of picks, or a true shutdown guy like Jones that doesn’t get many picks?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Both

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe the thinking is with Jones more throws go Xs way (more picks) or they throw to a 3rd option.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

X when healthy was shutting down receivers, he wasn’t giving up much at all. Hopefully shutting him down to get the knee right works because two shutdown type corners allows you do a lot on defense. See the Legion of Boom a few years back with SEA.

Regardless, this is how we’re going about it.

  34. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Byron Jones. Holy Shit! Jones and X ??? maybe Harris can get a “coverage sack” lol

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The #Dolphins are signing safety Clayton Fejedelem to a three-year, $8.55 million deal with $3M guaranteed, source said. Big money for a core special teamer as he leaves Cincinnati.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Some people still act like STs is an afterthought. Depth at safety and a core STs player is valuable at less than $3M per if they excel in that role. LOL

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Keep signing these guys that fit.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Clayton Fejedelem sounds like a role player/STs guy.

  41. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When you sign guys for big money they better be at key positions and make an impact, if they do both I can’t complain about the signing.

  42. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

If Jones shuts down his guy … X is gonna lead the league in INTs.

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Like every year I’ll give em the benefit of the doubt, but at some point…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nothing real crazy so far. Jones is the big signing but I think that points to how we want to play defense. All those mix and match formations not knowing who’s lining up where except at corner. We’re almost forcing teams to go inside where we know that’s what they’re going to do. Jones has also lined up all over the place for different matchups which fits the multiple defense and game plan game to game. This week you’re covering their top TE and they feel Needham can handle their outside WRs along with X. That sort of stuff. Belichick’s defense and now Flores/Boyer is about matchups opponent to opponent. Jones allows us to do this.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So do Biegel, Baker, van Ginkel, Sieler, Lawson, and Wilkins.
    Even Eguavon.
    Holy Shit.

I think our defense might have gotten a little better today 😎👍

  52. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Defense baby!!! I figured the secondary was going to be addressed this year. I can still see a safety with one of our 2nd round picks next month.

  53. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

12.75 for Van Noy is a lot, Flores must really like him.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s not a lot if we go to the Super Bowl.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think they’re paying him for more than his own talent. But knowledge of how this defense works. Grier and Flores are big on smart, tough and love football. Talent too. LOL

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow!!! Kyle Van Noy is a multiple LB. He knows how this defense works. No doubt the defensive scheme is coming together. We’re adding quality football players in their roles. Hey Flowers, keep playing well at guard. LOL

  55. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

What’s worse than being a Browns fan?

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    1 – DL
    1- LB
    1 -CB
    1 – psuedo safety/ST ace
    1- OG

Checking off lots of boxes. Aikens looks to be gone.

  57. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I was hoping for OL, DL, secondary, and a couple RBs for this off season. It’s looking like a good start…

  58. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well we made the list?????

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They didn’t sign him to that thinking his guard tape was bad. Sometimes reps with names don’t go away. He was signed as a guard, not a tackle. His 2nd half of last season was better than his first half at a new position. People are just going by Flowers which I did earlier. We’ll see.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What do you expect from a U75? I agree that the Jimmy Graham and RT moves were horrible, but the others not so much.

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve got about 40 players right now on the roster NFL worthy, including the 5 new FAs, that leaves about 13-15 spots with 14 draft picks fighting for many of those. We still have a lot of work to do in FA though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure about that. Anyway we may sign a few more in FA. As for the draft, 14 picks is a lot. I could see us trading up in multiple rounds and ending up with 9 or 10 picks. Then you have some UDFA signings. This is Phase II, not a championship team or fail season. Just get better and set yourself up to compete for titles in the next few years.

  60. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Miami is making a statement today. If they want to make a statement next month and both Burrow and Tua are gone, use all 3 1st rounders to take Wills and Wirfs in the top 10. …Then get guys like Ashtyn Davis-S, one of the RBs, and Bradlee Anae-DE with our day 2 picks.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They want to play press/blitz on defense. The idea is 5-6/6-5 blitzes. 8 in the box for the run. Kind of like the ’46’ DEF.

  61. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Steve, what is U75?

  62. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Looks like we can focus on offense in the draft right?

    Maybe we look at DL
But other than that, QB, RB, & OL correct?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

OL times a bunch still, but yeah O it will be overall.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We can still go front 7, but I see offense being the focus. I think Flores wants to make sure if our offense is struggling, we’re still in the game. QB, OL and Edge is being setup for the draft. Lawson and Van Noy are quality additions, but a rook edge guy in the early rounds makes it more likely that we can play the scheme.

Stunt – get in the backfield and cover. 8 stack against the run always. It looks ’46ish’ to me.

  63. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So what else do we need on D? Not many on the laundry list left.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I may be in the minority here, but I think CB is just as important as pass rusher for a good defense nowadays. With all the advantages the offense has, having CBs that can cover a receiver a second or two more gives those pass rushers a better chance of getting to the QBs.

All the signings were solid but damn did we eat that salary cap. It’s meant to be spent but a few of the signings were a bit higher than talent level in my opinion. At least we should have far more than 23 sacks and the talent at CB to hopefully turn that added pressure into picks. All of them looked like Flores type players so that is good.

I personally liked most of the signings yesterday, bu will be more interested to see some of the lower level signings over the next few days.

The only signing I’m a little iffy on was Van Noy, but he’s a scheme fit and Flores must’ve really wanted him. Outside of that I liked what they did….and really it’s not as if I hate the signing, just not enamored with it.

  85. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Hooray?

I have never been a fan of “winning” free agency. I especially don’t like having two of the highest paid players at their position at the same position. Also, Van Noy?

It’s funny the ebbs and flows we go through here. We sign Flowers and Lawson and we’re like – OK, we’re just signing mid tier guys, not giving huge money to one player, that’s good. Then we sign Byron Jones and that’s a lot of money and holy shit that’s a lot of money!. Then we sign Van Noy and holy shit that’s a lot of money too and WTF we have no cap space left, we blew it all!

Just a funny observation, don’t get insulted. 🙂

Getting Van Noy also makes NE weaker, and please tell me you haven’t dismissed NE already have you? Until they’re not winning the division, they’re the guys to chase.

I got my Shaq Lawson, Byron Jones and my Kyle Van Noy . . .

Jamie Collins also left NE to play for Detroit. More good news

I’ve never seen Top Secret and Cordrea Tankersley in the same room together which leads me to believe that Top Secret is Cordrea Tankersley. Until proven otherwise . . .

With Van Noy going to Miami id bet NE targets Baun as his replacement.

I think AJ May have been more likely if they kept Van Noy. I think they’ll want that hybrid LB/DE combo vs the DE/DT hybrid combo. I mean it wouldn’t shock if they grabbed A.J., but if they did I’d assume they’d have to come back for A. Jennings as the hybrid LB/DE later on.

Only thing that sucks about Van Noy is the Pats will most probably get a 3rd round comp for him next year.
