QB’s – Current depth chart and needs

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Josh Rosen

Jake Rudock

So there you have it. 15 year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick who is clearly the #1 choice as the starter at the moment, followed by 2 year veteran Josh Rosen who has played in all of 20 games starting 16 and doing so with a record of 3-13. Of course that record must be taken in context as he was playing for an awful team in Arizona for a HC that was fired after just one season. Jake Rudock was signed to a 1YR deal for $600K and he rounds out the depth chart.

Fitzpatrick had an uneven season, sitting behind Josh Rosen until the Fest game where Rosen was pulled and Fitzpatrick took over the reins for the rest of the season as the starter. He finished really strong, developing a strong relationship with WR DeVante Parker, who really grew in leaps in bound last season. I don’t want to ruin the upcoming WR article but the duo of Fitzpatrick and Parker from game #10-#16 totaled 39 receptions for 733 yards for a crazy 18.7 YPC and 5 TD’s. That’s a season for some guys right there. Mike Gesicki also had a very nice season and Fitzpatrick had a lot to do with that as well.

What to do with Josh Rosen? The best answer is probably nothing right now as his value couldn’t really be diminished any more than it already has so we just have to hope he has better things to show us. He needs to show a lot of improvement in camp and in the preseason and let him continue to build on that. There shouldn’t be any pressure for him regarding the starting job because if Ryan Fitzpatrick is healthy, he’s the QB, there is no uncertainty there. Of course if Rosen played out of his mind he may force a different outcome but no one really expects that to happen.

There are so many different ways to view the draft and the QB’S that may be available to us. My preference is to stay where we are and let the players fall as they will. I don’t want to trade multiple picks to get Burrow and I’d rather not trade multiple picks to get Tua, although the value to potentially get to #3 with Detroit shouldn’t cost more than our #5 and and our #39 pick. I could tolerate that, but the more I consider Justin Herbert or Jordan Love or even Jacob Eason or Jalen Hurts later on, as long as we have a solid foundation after free agency and the draft, I’d feel fine with any of those guys knowing none of them have the pressure to start this season. We can develop them and see what we’ve got and still be able to draft a QB next season providing we don’t trade away any future draft capital.

I’m excited for the draft, even if no one is there live, that doesn’t matter to me. All I care about is WHO we draft, not whether they hug the commissioner. It’s possible due to COVID-19 that free agency will be postponed, because part of the process is meeting team’s staffs and also checking out the neighborhoods, schools etc. If travel is limited or shut down completely, all that stuff can’t happen. I suppose they could do video conferencing but it can’t be the same as meeting a guy in person and of course seeing the sites around town and feeling the lifestyle of sunny Florida. I’m open to taking a QB early and I’m even more open to taking one later after we got some top OL and defensive players and maybe a RB. Next up is WR’s followed by TE’s.

GO DOLPHINS!!

ESPN is talking about Brady to Bucs like it is a done deal. It’s not of course because nothing can be signed until tomorrow but that would be my favorite destination for him. (other than Arizona LOL)

Brady said something about “this Cali Boy” in his farewell which I took as a hint that he will return to that beachy state he came from in LA where Giselle and he could break into movies.

did he not start a production company recently? Named it after his draft humber in the 6th round.

The Chargers could use somebody to sell tix in LA.

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jameis is famous for the “Winston Squint” all the way back to FSU days as he could not see the signals from the sideline. Also his peripheral vision was affected. Also his acuity was occluded causing jersey colors in motion to appear as purplish grey blurs. Lastly, he did not see in planes as normal vision does and not in perspective very well, so he could not be sure of depth perception of guys moving laterally “underneath” (closer to him) than his target.

The stat you key on when talking about Winston’s year last year was 30 ints and 12 fumbles…… 42 turnovers. Just the ints made top 5 all time. My guess you tack on the 12 fumbles and it’s probably 1 or 2 all time in turnovers for one season.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I know Blanda had 42 interceptions with the Oilers one year. I think Bradshaw had 37 interceptions as a rookie. I think Testaverde had a similar number one year. So Winston is probably not 1 or 2 but maybe top 5 and definitely top 10

      • D's avatar D says:

I thought thats what ya were referring to with the U75, because i have seen it in reference to that before. Internets peoples try to be clever and when there was a moratorium on the “R” word, that was there “clever” way of still saying it without saying it.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’re going to have a lot of different looks and fronts with Van Noy, Lawson and Ogbah in the fold. It’s exciting! The pass rush should be significantly better already, should be a lot more pressure

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

The big thing is it should come from multiple places vs 1 or 2 guys. Each of these signings are good pressure and behind the LOS guys who are well versed in the run game.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think what we are looking for in guys, are players who are above average players on the ascend and whom play above their already higher than average level of play. Not quite lunch pail kind of player, but extra gear players.

      • D's avatar D says:

They get paid well, but they dont get over paid, and to me thats a very player fair system, and a very fiscally responsible system. Thats an improvement over NE system which is a very cold business like system. You want to establish a culture and championship system you cant start out like NE, you have to build your reputation and consistent success so that you offer the players championships to deal with the cold business like culture way they operate.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree, and you can’t have the NE system without an elite QB, that masks the shortcomings of other players.

I think ya missed what i was saying, i think the rumor was we trade for Cooks and get picks, not give, Get picks for taking on the contact. Rams as really tight on cap space, thats why the Gurley rumpors were taking on the contract to get picks.

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I like how we are building a roster to be competitive now but on shorter 3 year contracts. So when those contracts are up our rookies will be ready to go. Also, most of these F/A’s will still be in their late 20’s and still have value and, if we lose them in F/A in 3 years. more comp picks.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You sign FAs in general to short contracts to minimize the risk.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And king of the comp kicks has always been where Flores was trained. Wonder if we do the other move — trade a first for the next year’s first and a 2nd.

Apparently the Bucs are right up there with the Chiefs, Saints, 49ers in the NFC odds wise to make the SB. Crazy!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It will be like Namath to the Rams 2.0

    • D's avatar D says:

If you look at their team with that defense and the receivers they have, its a really solid team. Any top tier Qb could have changed the discussion about that team. Rivers would have made them high odds as well. I think it says more about Jameis than anything, like saying he was the thing holding them back.

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Pats lost 2 starting LB’s in Van Noy and Jamie Collins. Nice!

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Don’t overlook Stidham as the Pats next QB. The guy is a better passer than people realize. He is like a Mitchell Trubisky but better, IMO.

    • D's avatar D says:

Stidham is a hell of a QB on paper. His problems are between the ears, and in Belichick’s “do dont think” system, i think he could be successful.

  55. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s not that good a joke….. but the dudes in the vid crack me up.

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – The Bucs gave up 450 points last season. I know some of that had to do with turnovers and lord knows they had plenty of those, Winston accounted for 42 on his own, but that’s not great.

    • D's avatar D says:

That team underperformed big time, and they were switching defense up. Arians will get that shit figured out. The talent is there though. Secondary needs some work.

  57. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

So that’s to interior OL. I expect a couple of OT in the draft early.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      two

    • D's avatar D says:

Its better in my opinion to get OT’s through the draft, BUT sometime you are in such a big hole already you need to buy a guy in FA to get you started and on the right track. Was a shallow pool for us in FA this year anyways. IMO id make a backup offer to Kilgore, get him back on the cheap, to be a backup, which he would be a good quality backup for us.

  58. D's avatar D says:

Happy to have Karras, but Skura was really my hope. Skura would have probably had to be a little more expensive since they Ravens have right to match, but not much more.

  59. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

But now we have Mongo’s great nephew.

  60. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Flowers should be a G. Btwn Karras ,Dieter and Davis seems C and the other G are filled, even if might be some young’ns in the draft. But even try something funky like Davis or Flowers at RT…… still leaves two holes to hit hard in the draft like Phelon said. I’m guessing two of the top 5.

  61. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Karras is a good signing overall for the depth of the line. Our true long term starter is probably going to be drafted. Hennessy or Cushenberry, if healthy, would start over him when game 1 rolls around. If they draft Biadasz then he can re-gab this year while Karras mans the pivot.

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    From TCPalm

According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Howard’s rookie total came despite facing an eight-man box 27.78 percent of the time. Even though his yardage dropped to 1,122 the next year, his second season may have been even more impressive. It came vs. an eight-man front 43.12 percent of the time, seventh-most in the league. Defenses were challenging the Bears to make Howard beat them. Rookie QB Mitchell Trubisky was an afterthought.

Now you know why I call sports writers/reporters U75.

Really? Putting 8 in the box challenges the RB? Most NFL fans think it challenges the QB to throw.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No, but you do what you have to, to get rid of the Foles contract and Jags going no where this year anyways, so…

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

wow they sure fell far fast. I hope we are doing this the right way, not like they did it.

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Karras will do, but agree we need 2 OTs. Davis is fine for one OT, but we need more options.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im thinking Wills is their target, espoecially if they are also targeting Tua and not planning on trading up for Burrow.

Also that in mind, would you give up 3 first and trade up to get Burrow? Two to move up slightly for Tua, none and take Herbert at 5, or draft a different player and take Love at 18, or 26 if we are lucky.

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I like that we will only have one rookie OL starting (probably). LT.
Then we can get a RT next year.

  67. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I still don’t understand that exactly.
If Jesse Davis is your chosen RT, then what does it matter whether your QB is left-handed?
    You already have your RT.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Because your RT now becomes your blindside protecter. There’s reasons a LT gets a lot more money and being a blindside protector is one of those main reasons. You don’t want your QB taking hits from behind when dropping back. At least with a right handed QB, they can see it coming if a defender gets by the RT. I would not trust Jesse Davis to be a blindside tackle, I just wouldn’t. …Especially with Tua and his injury history.

  75. D's avatar D says:

I don’t think Jesse Davis is out chosen RT, and he definitely isn’t the talent you want at any OT spot. He doesn’t have the feet for it, like Flowers. He needs to be in the box not on the edge. Think of positions as mirrors, you want to compete, your players need to mirror what’s opposite them. You want strong stump like players in the OG positions especially RG, LGs move so they need to be a little more athletic but generally the same, OTs need to move well to match the DEs who have speed moves, OC needs to be smart and read a defense to call out blocking assignments and check this block while watch for late blitzing LB to pick up.

I did not choose Jesse Davis.
The FO not only did not cut or trade him,
    they extended his contract.
Grier and Flores chose Jesse Davis.

He literally can play all 5 positions on the OL,
    because he has.

He had a pretty good year at RG in 2018, then played several spots last year,
including a bunch of snaps at RT.

I personally think his feet are too slow to be a NFL Tackle,
but he has done it, and they keep sticking him back out there.

I would’ve thought they’d move him back inside first chance they got,
but they signed a OG and a Center.

Maybe they draft 2 tackles and make him a sub.

Ultimately think Davis should be the ” 6th man” off the bench, but they didn’t pay him like that either. Guessing he will be a “compete” in training camp, whether at RG or RT.

“The Miami Dolphins today announced they have released safety Reshad Jones and waived the following players: center/guard Evan Brown, cornerback Rashard Causey, tackle Chidi Okeke and wide receiver T.J. Rahming. The team also released/failed physical linebacker Mike Hull and waived/non-football injury defensive tackle Kendrick Norton.” dolphins.com

Reshad Jones ranks second in team history with six defensive touchdowns and his 10.5 career sacks are second-most by a defensive back in Dolphins history.

    Wow.
The patsies have lost Roberts, VanNoy, Karras, Harmon, Watson, Shelton, and Collins.

That is a huge loss for them. They’ll hardly even be the same team.

Big losses but they have 12 picks, including 4 compensatory picks. They will get another bunch next year with all the guys we signed too. They’ll fill the holes eventually

Dolphins waived Reshad Jones and Rashard Causey because it sounded like Reshad.

Do you think that NE will be awarded the bucs’ first rounder for tampering with tommy?

Hey, I’m not clear on this, is the “R” word Retard?

  90. D's avatar D says:

Just wanted to clear it up with ya Naples, im not saying you have him as out RT, im just saying i dont think the team has him as their RT, or if so just in the interm until a new guy can be brought in to fill that spot. His versatility justifies his contract which is nefinately not a starter contract, but more of a valuable backup, part time starter kind of contract. His ability to cover backup positions all across the OL is huger. I like the dude, im glad we have him signed to a longer term contract, i just think we still look to replace him in the draft or FA.

We need a new long snapper. We can’t go with a guy named Taybor Pepper. Man, why did they ever get rid of John Denney? That was a huge mistake…………………..

I don’t get the love for Epenesa and after this FA we should really be looking more for a guy like Brown or Kinlaw, maybe Davis. Blacklock, Galimore. Someone like that.

I didn’t even pay attention that Roberts was a FA. I like him as a jack of all trades player.

Ted Karras took less money from the Miami Dolphins than he would have made in an offer from the New England Patriots.

    The day has arrived.
