Piggy Kiper Reviews Running Backs

Tired of taking Silkwood Showers only to stay home all day?  Well have no fear, the NFL Draft is around the corner…eh…maybe…

Anyway Piggy Kiper is here to help you examine some of the prospects.

Today we are looking at the Running Back position.  Like toilet paper, the running back position has a short shelf life but is always in demand, so teams also keep them in bulk.

The value of the running back position is not what it used to be.  Before the Goodell/Brady/Peyton era, teams places a lot more value on running backs.  But now, we often go a few drafts in a row without a running back taken in the first round.

There is a good chance that a running back is not selected in the first round in 2020.  But the Dolphins are one of a handful of teams with multiple picks, so there is a chance the Dolphins take a running back at #26 and het their pick of the liter.  If they do that, I can see the pick being D’Andre Swift from Georgia.

Swift is fun to watch.  He’s a patient runner, who has a 1 cut style of running.  On tape, Swift has a lot of productive runs after planting his right foot in the ground, making a cut and turning up filed.  His top end speed is not lightning fast, but you wouldn’t know it when you watch him run, because this one cut style puts a lot of early separation between the tacklers and Swift

Swift is a good receiver too.  If Swift has any weaknesses it’s ball security and pass protection.  But he is a very productive and talented back and worth a late first or an early second round pick.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other good backs.  Like Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor.  For most of the season I expected Taylor to be the first back off the board.  But it’s starting to look like that isn’t the way it will shape up.  That shouldn’t scare anyone.  Taylor had a very productive career running behind some very good offensive lines with the Badgers.  Taylor had 6,174 rushing yards in three years with 50 touchdowns!   If that’s not impressive to you, go back to coveting hand sanitizer.

Taylor has good size coming in at 5’11, 219 pounds.  But he actually moves like a smaller back showing the kind if shiftiness that projects well in the NFL.  He’s been durable throughout his career even after carry after carry.  He really has one glaring weakness:  ball security.  Taylor has had a few fumbles but he’s also had close to 1000 touches, so make sure you put it in perspective.

Sticking with big numbers in the Big Ten, another productive runner that might be off the board before the 2nd round is through is J.K. Dobbins, who had 2,000 rushing years in his final year with Ohio State.  Dobbins isn’t as shifty as the two running backs we mentioned on this list.  Dobbins is more like a tough lunch pail runner who is going to be consistently productive.  He actually kind of reminds me of new Dolphin, Jordan Howard…so if you are thinking “change of pace” he probably won’t do that, but what Dobbins will likely do is have a very good NFL career.

Finally rounding out our top four NFL backs is Clyde Edwards-Helaire.  Edwards-Helaire was kind of lost in the shuffle in terms of hype at LSU because of all the attention Joe Burrow received.  But Edwards-Helaire was very productive for LSU.  In fact he had over 1,800 total offensive yards.

Some of those yards came through the air as he had 55 catches.  He’s easily the best receiving back on this list.

A lot of people think of Edwards-Helaire as a bowling ball stout runner, and at 5’8, 209 pounds, he fits that mold, but really, both Swift and Dobbins aren’t much taller than Edwards-Helaire.

He is more quick than fast, but that quickness goes a long way to breaking a lot of tackles.  On tape you can see his toughness on each carrry as he fights for yards.  But on paper, what some people miss is that he is one of the best backs on this list in terms of ball security.  He just doesn’t fumble a lot.

These are the four backs that are most likely to be selected before round 2 is over.  But there are plenty of others backs in this draft, and we will take a closer look at them next time.

Kong, do you think Trump and Mustaine are brash? LOL

That’s all I meant by it. They are both like that and not shy about it.

    • rich0322 says:

Yea, I knew the secondary was going to be a focus along with the trenches/edge rusher this off-season. I’ve been saying for a while that CBs were just as important as pass rusher when having a top defense.

Also, nice shout out for 2 of my all-time favorites, Madison and Surtain. 👍

      • pheloniusphish says:

If there is a season it will be an interesting defense. Honestly, I expect a trade up for Burrow using two of this year’s 1st rounders and one of next year’s. Then drafting an OT in the first, interior OL/RB/OT in the second.and third.

      • rich0322 says:

I can definitely roll with that. Though I would like to get another safety and a NT. I wouldn’t mind trading a bunch of day 3 picks to pick up another 3rd rounder too.

I miss going out to breakfast

  16. ocalarob says:

Parker was great last year as shown in this video. I just dont understand why anyone would want to give up the plethora of early pick we have to move up for burrow. QB pos is not broken so why fix it?

    • ocalarob says:

Fitz looks great on these throws

      • steveccnv says:

Imagine what he’ll look like behind an OL. We heard last year during mini camps what a great connection Fitz had with Parker. I always thought check down Charlie held Parker back. Now he’s making 30M per to hold back Titans WRs.

      • ocalarob says:

Tanny was unaware of his surroundings. He still is. When he was here he was the most sacked qb. And a lot of that was on him. His success last year had to do with derek henry.
That said Fitz looks great and we have a huge investment in Rosen. I dont see the qb position as a weakness

  17. son of a son of a shula says:

Tim, I forgot Aikens was a FA, I thought I remembered him signing an extension early last year.

  18. son of a son of a shula says:

Cav, glad to see you on top of the Belichick win count. It’ll be sad day if he were to pass Coach Shula

  19. ocalarob says:

The models show the apex around the beginning of may however this virus will still linger into august and sept or so the experts say.
If it was just as simple as strapping your chinstrap amd playing there wouldnt be a problem but what about the fans?

    • steveccnv says:

I’m not sold on the models, but once it slows down I expect them to test all the players/coaches, then put them in a team sort of quarantine, and have an extended training camp. No one else allowed into camp. Then re-evaluate the situation to see, if fans can attend the games. I don’t see any missed games.

  20. ocalarob says:

Are you actually going to put 60k fans in a stadium sitting side by side within the next maybe minimum 8 months? I doubt it.
So does the NFL continue to play without fans? That would be a big hit in the wallet for owners.

    • steveccnv says:

Wouldn’t it be a bigger hit to not play the games? The tv revenue should keep the league afloat. Since players get 47% it would affect them too, maybe not this year, but in the future.

      • ocalarob says:

Teams dispurse 47% to players however players are under contract for a specific amount. Im not sure if that could be amended as i doubt they thought of that prior to signing the cba. Not sure about that though

  21. ocalarob says:

I doubt you will see any stadiums with fans at a sporting event until there’s a vaccine.
That’s a huge problem going forward for the NFL.

  22. Mike E. says:

Thinking ahead . . . If the games are played in empty stadiums, I’m still down for coming down to FLA for a Fest. We could do everything the same except for the game itself. For the game we could go all to a place like Bokampers and get a big table or a couple of tables and watch the game there. Thoughts?

    • pheloniusphish says:

Sounds like a plan to me.

    • pheloniusphish says:

Maybe see if we can get a private room set up somewhere.

    • stangerx says:

Think we have to see how it plays out. But been thinking at some point we might take a year off and if there was ever a year for it….. Getting people to fly in to watch on TV would seem to be the one.

But lets just see what happens.

  23. pheloniusphish says:

I love Fitz. He will be a great mentor for another year. But Fitz isn’t the answer.

  24. Mike E. says:

Stanger – The game itself has never been the focal point of the trip. Especially as bad as we have been. Now we’ll finally be competitive so that will change but I’d love to see everyone, hang out during the week and then I don’t see any real downside hanging out a place like Bokampers and stuffing my face and drinking with all my friends. Could be a helluva lot worse!

  25. son of a son of a shula says:

In the event that this all ends nicely and the season goes on as planned think of this possible scenario. Miami plays in Jax and then the following week at home or vice versa. Could potentially Fest both games. If it played out like that in October that would be cool.

    • Mike E. says:

If it doesn’t end up where we can watch at the stadium, we actually have more flexibility because we can go watch an away game too. We’ll see what happens, either way it’s gonna be good

  26. The Flying Pig says:

I got up at 8 and since I had nothing to do
    Went back to bed

    This sucks

  27. The Flying Pig says:

My nieces wedding was postponed to 10/24
So FYI if the fest is 10/24 – I won’t be able to make that date or weekend

  28. The Flying Pig says:

    Thank you Oregon

  29. stangerx says:

Mike E — people watching the Phins in South Florida and I am there. We don’t know what will be going on yet though. But what Fest Fever!

  30. bookman11 says:

I am not taking much vacation right now and will probably have many days to burn, a whole week actually might be nice, right on the beach.

  31. son of a son of a shula says:

Piggs, aren’t you supposed to be raising pigeons up on the roof? Isn’t that what New Yorkers do? That should keep you entertained.

  32. son of a son of a shula says:

It’ll be tough not hugging all over Piggy though

  33. son of a son of a shula says:

My mother told me today that her own grandmother died form the 1918 influenza pandemic.

    • stangerx says:

Sad who you never had the chance to meet. Only met one of my great-grandparents and she had dementia at the time.

  34. CavalierKong says:

Cheers, Son. I knew you’d be right with me on that one. He’s on a trajectory to break it in 4-5 years. With Brady gone, maybe we can add a year to that (although he won 11 games with flipping Matt Cassell, so we can’t count on it). Throw in a potential lost season and the high end is now 7 years.

He’s too good, only his health can stop him. But in 7 years a lot can happen. Maybe in two years he’ll start talking like Biden, and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief and watch him slip into dementia. lmao

  35. The Flying Pig says:

In case you are nostalgic about how awkward Booker can make the fest

  36. son of a son of a shula says:

Fuck, my friend’s dad just passed away from the Corona Virus. He died a couple of hours ago.

  38. Ken says:

    Did someone say fest?

  39. Tim Knight says:

So sorry to hear about your friend’s Dad, Mike.

  40. Mike E. says:

Not sure how old he was, I’d say about 80 or so. Not a very close friend, but a good friend

  41. manitobafinfan says:

I’d love to do a double up again … Houston/Pats was a lotta fun. Wife wants to go to SF game in CA

Our HOF road trip in June is not looking promising at the moment

  43. Randy says:

    MikeE,
So sorry to hear that, man. I remember when one of my closest friends lost his dad. He called me up right after and we had a great conversation about fatherhood and family. He was really close with his dad. It was gut wrenching but so cathartic. Condolences to your friend and his family too.

  44. Mike E. says:

Thanks all! My friend is such a nice guy, what’s worse is he is also sick with COVID-19, he caught it from his dad. I know he was very close with his dad, my heart goes out to him.

    • stangerx says:

I’m sorry for your friend’s loss…. even more so that he is dealing with the dastardly thing. Stay safe.

  45. wyoming85 says:

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s pretty much what it would take. That’s one of the benefits of having this kind of draft capital. It’a rare, take advantage of it when you can.

  46. manitobafinfan says:

Wishing speedy recovery for all affected with this damn thing ..
Mike : sorry on friends dads passing
Ken :,stay far away from those family members. You especially need to watch carefully

    • Ken says:

Believe me I don’t need many excuses to stay away from my brother. Don’t get me wrong, I love my brother but I just don’t always like him

      • manitobafinfan says:

lol, I hear ya. I have 2 , one I make a point of talking to once a month so doesn’t get passed at me , and another that I have not spoken to outside of Fantasy Football for 4 years, since our Mom passed .. << he is a classic waste of skin

      • Tim Knight says:

LOL, you’ve talked about that before.

      • Mike E. says:

LOL @ Hulk! Stay safe pal!

      • Ken says:

I have another brother that I am very close to but he is out in Oklahoma. So far they have not had it to bad there but they are starting to get cases

  47. Mike E. says:

    Thanks Toba

  51. The Flying Pig says:

Hey Mike if you aren’t going to post a new post. I’m about to. Is that okay or do you have something planned?

  52. Krishna says:

So sad to see this and I haven’t even turned on the news today. Don’t want to see yet.

The only way through this, that I see, is a United States acting as one, unified and testing 10x what it is today.

We’re not doing either. The more each state does there own thing, it’s like pissing in the wind.

Without testing and tracing you can’t effectively, surgically, isolate, monitor, and assess.

Another need is quartermastering that vast distribution of supplies from wherever they are to wherever they need to be within hours, days not weeks and months. That’s a federal responsibility.

Hope we can all come together to make this right sooner rather than later.

I built a squirrel picnic table today. It’s all the rage.

    • Tim Knight says:

A friend of mine who is a big cyclist both road and mountain does these crazy long rides from his house in Bergen County, NJ along the Hudson River into NY State and he said people were out and about and the boat basin on the river was mobbed because the sun finally came out. As long as that kind of thing keeps happening, this virus isn’t going away anytime soon.

  53. manitobafinfan says:

Sitting here hitting refresh over and over to have a shot at first lol

  54. The Flying Pig says:

    New blog up

  55. D says:

Jesus, up another 50K since yesterday at 5:30, NY has 122k cases of our total 322K……

    • D says:

Looks like Joisey is catching the spill over, they are number 2 state now with almost 35k cases.

    • D says:

You NE peeps need to stay the fuck indoors, this getting crazy up there. Specially you elderly types, *stares at Mikey*

      • Mike E. says:

Well, I’m not working anymore, and I keep my distance from people when I shop. The only other time I go out is to play frisbee with my son or to take a walk down my street while keeping a safe distance from other people. I definitely have not been careless.
