The Seven Samurai of the 2020 NFL Draft

Do you hear it?

(The sound of thunder crashes behind Piggy)

Piggy Kiper here.  I’m just going to hide under this desk…Some of you have been looking forward to this post…others will hate it.  No matter where you fall, make sure your squiggly doesn’t get burned by the storm that is coming.  Experts are saying that the 2020 NFL draft is among the deepest draft for wide receiver in years.

Is it true?

A true Samurai never reveals your fate until your throat is already cut!

(the wind picks up behind Piggy)

Most Dolfans don’t view Wide Receiver as a priority, but when you look at our roster, our top receiver is DeVante Parker, a guy who only recently blossomed – can he keep it up? After Parker it’s Preston Williams, who has the look of a great find, but who is still unproven.  Then there is Albert Wilson, the focal point of the 2018 Gase offense, who may be on his way out.  So there is a lot of uncertainty at the position coming into 2020.  I don’t think Dolfans should rule out the possibility of a high pick on a wide receiver.  But even if the Dolphins don’t do that, the Dolphins probably will spend a day 3 pick on a wide put.

But this list isn’t for Day 3 Wideouts – It for Samurai!

So let’s look at these Samurai….but be very careful…they are dangerous…

(A tornado swirls behind Piggy)

Jerry Jeudy, Alabama

With 159 receptions, 2,742 career yards and 26 career touchdowns in three years at Powerhouse Alabama, no one is overlooking this Samurai.  Jeudy may be the first receiver off the board.  Jeudy may be Odell Beckham, Jr. without the baggage.  He’s physically gifted with incredible speed and agility.  Jeudy made a lot of downfield plays during his time with Alabama and although he is fast, it wasn’t his speed that lead to a lot of those downfield plays, it was his technique.  Jeudy is polished, talented and ready to go.  I expect to see success early for Jeudy in the NFL.  Jeudy is this year’s tornado of talent.

(lightning strikes the ground Piggy)

Henry Ruggs III, Alabama

As usual, Alabama was loaded in 2019.  One position that was notable was wide receiver, where play after play, they had receivers making plays down field.  In Ruggs’ case his speed really standouts.  Ruggs ran a blistering 4.27 at the combine.  That is what this Samurai is – FAST.  If you want a guy to run downfield, pick Ruggs.  Ruggs averaged 18.7 yards a catch in 2019.  DBs better have a plan for this kind of speed in the NFL.  One notable negative about this Samurai I don’t want to say to loud (Piggy whispers ducking from a swinging katana) his numbers dropped off a bit after the Tua injury.  But he still runs like lightning and will be a real asset to any offense.

(the Earth quakes below Piggy)

Laviska Shenault, Jr., Colorado

This athletic beast is among the most physical samurai in the draft.  His thick, chiseled frame is generally unaffected by contact from DBs or LBs.  Honestly, it looks like this Samurai looks for contact.  Shenault can be a solid outside receiver, but I think he might be more suited to do what Dolfans have seen guys like Jarvis Landry or Rishard Matthews do for us for years.  Shenault is expected to go anywhere between the late first round to the early third round.  I will whisper the last part…Some people think Shenault may be too physical (a samurai arrow strikes the wall behind Piggy) and he should improve his route running ability.  He is this year’s Earthquake!

(A Volcano erupts behind Piggy)

Justin Jefferson, LSU

Jefferson has good speed and he will burn you like lava, but that’s not his greatest strength.  Jefferson is the best route runner among these Samurais.  An top notch technician among this WR class, Jefferson provided a reliable target for first overall pick Joe Burrow.  The LSU offense erupted in 2019 and you can see that in Jefferson’s stats, nearly doubling his yardage from 2018 (875 yards) to 2019 (1,540 yards).  A lot of experts are saying Jefferson will not be a #1 receiver, but will make a heck of a #2.  Jefferson is as reliable as a volcano, if you see one, it will probably erupt some day.

(a tsunami crashes over Piggy)

Jalen Reagor, TCU

Thanks a lot Jalen, now I’m all wet! (Piggy floats to the surface) It seems calm for a moment…too calm…all of the sudden boom…Jalen Reagor goes the distance and breaks open the game.  With elite speed and an uncanny ability change direction, DBs should never get comfortable around Reagor.  Think of Reagor as a poor man’s Ruggs, if there was no poverty.  Speed both vertically and laterally defines this terrific talent and helped him collect 1,061 yards and 9 TDs in 2018.

(A Blizzard forms around Piggy)

CeeDee Lamb, Oklahoma

Brrrrrrrrr…This one is cold.  CeeDee Lamb put up great numbers at Oklahoma, not doubt those numbers were inflated by the system – but you can’t ignore what he did.  Lamb looked like he was running around frozen defenders.  He is so quick, they froze in place with his every move.  At 6’2, 189 pounds, he has good size but what stands out about Lamb is his body control.  That body control helps him make some tough catches and then quickly regain his balance and use his quickness to pack on the yards after the catch while the defenders stand around him like icicles.

(A comet crashes in front of Piggy)

Tee Higgins, Clemson

Wow! I didn’t even see that coming!  I should have, given Clemson has produced some terrific Samurais over the years.  Higgins is this little Piggy’s favorite samurai this year.  At 6-4, 215 what you can see on the tape with Higgins is his ability to attack the ball while it’s in the air and make it his.  He’s a graceful receiver who will make your toe touching catch on a ball that most receivers think is out of reach.  He will enagage with CBs playing press and come up with the big catch.  He’s also very shifty for a tall receiver and will certianly break tackles and get the all important YAC.  Higgins compares favorably to AJ Green.

Now you know who the samurais are.  Beware!

    Omar on Twitter about Tua:

He’ll be one of THREE first round picks in 2020. Can’t stay healthy in the next 3 years just draft another one.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think we should get this guy as a change of pace RB. He is a great returner. A smallish RB at 193. Would be cool to have another Grantman on the team. Speed, speed, speed!! He can break some ankles also.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, let’s say we just pick at #5 whoever it is. I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded up from 18 and 26 to add players we feel are franchise changing players, not just taking players when we’re up and using the quantity numbers game. We don’t have to address every position this year. What we want to do is add three impact players that in a few years we have to start working on extensions because we don’t want to lose them. We’ll still be able to add some mid and late round guys to compete and hope you find a sleeper and a couple of role players. We have so many options.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am 100% behind this. I don’t care if we only wind up taking 7 player with our 14 picks as long as the do it wisely. They can move up or down all they want as long as they get the best players.

I just don’t want to relive the DT3 or LC3 situations again. Use the capitol to move up if you are confident but don’t just play Fantasy GM.

  4. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am definitely now all on the Herbert train

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The wind is just blowing that way for Omar this week

He’s given people a hard time about Tua in the past and he’s probably watched a few clips of Herbert

He’s just trying to generate clicks…as usual

Mando is my pretty bad too

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This isn’t exactly hating on Herbert Ken

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Question posed to Omar on Twitter:
What name have you seen mocked (any of their 3 1sts) to the Dolphins would make you throw up your hands in disgust on draft night?
    Omar’s response:
Justin Herbert at 5, especially if Tua is on the board.

This is the NFL shop page I get when I google “Miami Dolphins Jersey”

Who’s picture is too large in the center for you guys? I am just wondering if it is a targeted thing.

  9. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    More Omar on Herbert:
I’ve tried over and over again to make myself like Justin Herbert the player. I can’t! I wouldn’t have drafted and invested in Josh Allen (still wouldn’t) and don’t want the second coming of him. Love the arm and athleticism. Hate the accuracy issues.

  10. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Remember: What would Omar do? Then do the opposite and all will be well

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“We have an idea of who we like,” Grier said.

And later he added, “We feel good about eight or nine players” for that No. 5 overall pick.

  12. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

The way I look at it is we are screwed either way. We take Tua all we will hear about is if he’ll stay healthy and if we don’t take him we’ll hear the whining and bitching for god knows how long. We can’t win either way with all this QB talk. God I hate QBs anymore. I can’t believe I’m saying that because Marino is my all time favorite.

  13. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m not the biggest Herbert fan but the media never have original thoughts. I’m still hearing the same drivel about Herbert everywhere that was promoted in December and countered by his coach and teammates from January-April. Listening to ESPN radio, these sports people give journalists a bad name and I thought that was impossible. Without a script, they are hollow, unfunny, unimaginative voice-boxes for their parent company.

I still don’t like what I’ve seen from Herbert for 4 years but he’s definitely a talented player and I have zero doubt at his ability to lead an offense. Media just wants another Mayfield to give them easy clicks.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Omar is not alone in his opinion about Herbert. Here is an article from PFF from January.

    https://www.pff.com/news/college-justin-herbert-worth-risk-first-round-2020-nfl-draft

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Perhaps even more alarming is that Herbert had the most incompletions faulted to him when throwing to a receiver with open separation and on his first read. He’s been known to lock in on his first read far too quickly and far too long.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

None of these young QBs are proven at the next level for all sorts of reasons. Do they have the skill to play at the NFL level, improve and mature into the position at the next level? That’s what I’m looking for.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I meant to say “None of these young QBs are proven or ready at the next level for all sorts of reasons.”

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

From what I know of Chan Gailey’s offense and he was our OC in the past in 2000-01, he will use spread formations but he’ll also pound the rock and utilize the talent he has. He’s multiple – different game plan for each opponent based on matchups. He has a ton of coaching experience in multiple phases on both sides of the ball and as a HC in both college and the NFL. He will be a valuable senior teacher besides Xs and Os as the OC. It seems that Flores felt O’Shea was overmatched.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When Chan was our OC, he ran the ball a LOT, back the he was known as the OC tgat always had a 1000 yrd rusher.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“We have an idea of who we like,” Grier said.

And later he added, “We feel good about eight or nine players” for that No. 5 overall pick.

    “This sounds like me.”
said 1.9 million Dophins fans (at least)

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way I feel about this draft and many others have said the same thing is… let’s just see how the people in power want to rebuild this team. I already see fans and media setting up to pounce if we don’t do it the way everyone thinks it should have be done which is thousands of different scenarios. LOL

Daniel Jones being drafted at #6 last year by the Giants was mocked by the majority and then everyone shut the fuck up because he played better than most thought he would.

It’s about team success, not draft grades the day after. It takes time for teams going through rebuilds or transitions. The saying “money is the root of all evil” is similar to a “lack of patience.” If you want to keep referencing the past so be it, but it’s not the same people involved. Past seasons have nothing to do with now in 2020.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I have no idea what Gailey will do here this time around, but his history is to play a fairly basic, controlled offense with simple routes and reads. Like every coordinator, he has shown a little flexibility in shaping his offenses around what he’s got, but his base is simple, basic and fairly risk adverse. An offense that does not ask the QB to make big plays all the time.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Herbert and Rosen ?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed! Football is not that complicated. It’s more about execution than anything else. Everyone always says we need to see more creative play-calling. What have the Pats been doing over the last two decades that is so complicated other then a surprise play here and there? They were coached to play whatever it takes to win the game. Play spread and pass all day against this opponent, run more against the next opponent, blitz and man this opponent and a base rush and zone the next one.

I think that’s been the main thing with Belichick in NE. He doesn’t say we are this or that. They morph.

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    It’s OK Rock.
Miami’s had more than its share of Jewish players,
so Tua will fit right in with our team.
    Sage Rosenfels and Jay Fiedler,
    Rich Camarillo and Ed Newman
Lyle Alzado and Josh Rosen …

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I remember getting very tired of Gailey’s offenses, so I hope he’s changed a little. He is old school and tends to be kind of rigid in his play calling. That’s what I remember anyway. I’m not sure I’d call him multiple or real adaptable. Lots and lots of games are decided by 3 or 4 plays nowadays, and you need to be able to hit some big plays and produce chunk yards….even when you have a stout defense. If you can’t, good teams beat you. He knows how to design big plays, but will he call them every now and then?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t really care anymore about the OC and some sort of special. Block the play and make a play. 🙂

I have no problem saying this because I have had relations with lots of cultures. Hasidic Jews are not representative of most Jewish people, nor do they have a desire to assimilate and become Americans. They are a cult and a very close-minded society. JUST WATCHED A REPLAY of the college football national championship game between Clemson and LSU on ESPN. After falling behind early, LSU came back and made mince meat out of a very good Clemson team, beating them by 17 (and declining to score ANOTHER touchdown in the last minute when they had first and goal at the Clemson 5). Joe Burrow was even more awesome than I remember him being when I watched it live in January. Can’t believe Bungels’ owner Mike Brown would be stupid enough to trade away a chance to draft Burrow!!

Earlier up thread Tim commented about Pats that they “morphed” based on the opponent. Agreed! And it seems like Flores is prepping to have the same approach, thus the desire to acquire as many ‘versatile’ players as possible which is certainly something that we should look for in the draft.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A reason not to take a QB at 5, if he slides take him at 18.

Then when all is said and done the Chargers trade up to 3 and draft him.

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I don’t believe for a second that the Wonderlic score will affect where Tua gets drafted for a second. I might be crazy but I also think if he’s there at #5 he’s going to be a Miami Dolphin

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I did not make any comment on Tua’s low score, nor his being allowed to retake it, nor on Laura Rutledge.

However, Laura is obviously an expert.

My article that I cited was that Tua might have a similar experience to Aaron Rodgers.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t see that happening, his talent is undeniable and he’s ready to go except possibly physically after the injury. He has top notch leadership qualities and knows how to play. If he comes here he doesn’t have to play this year at all which is ideal really. I could be wrong, I usually am when it comes to the draft, but if he’s there at 5 I think we take him.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They’ve (Dolphins coaches) probably discussed enough football with Tua to know whether he can comprehend what he sees on the field and is able to digest and understand a playbook. Tannehill didn’t even know what division we played in, so there’s that. This kid eats, drinks and sleeps football and from what I’ve seen, it really looks like he wants to be here.

I me good for you donating but is right now a time to continue to be racist. His belief is that black and brown communities are disproportionately hit by this, so it should only go to them. I mean for fucks sake this virus don’t care about color,it doesn’t care about money it don’t care about fame. It has and will continue to kill people of all walks of life. I wish this guy would just do good and stop the separatist agenda. He wants us to hate one another by setting a divide even in a time when we REALLY don’t need that.

That’s just not the right way to handle things. It’s not like the virus is targeting blacks or hispanic people, it’s people who leave in inner cities where it’s depressed financially and over populated and a lot of the people are afraid to go to the hospital because they won’t be able to handle the bills. Fuck him, that’s such a dickbag thing to do.

Wondelic scores supposedly shoe how quickly the mind works, but it’s been proven time and again to be different in how the mind processes on the field. Reason being is learning and intelligence, etc does isn’t as innate as reactionary processing. Some can do one or the other faster and those people are generally not the same type of people. Some have both traits some have neither. Wondelic tests for one, not the other and therefore really does no good for telling you the quality of a athlete, most of which the best are the second type.

Really? Because im as confused as anyone.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Do you take Simmons? We have a plethera of good lbers however flores is a defensive coach

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Do we take tua or herbert? Tuas injury process and the fact that i cant put my finger on it but herbert seems to lack some kind of intangible and with his athletic ability and strong arm why is he not the top prospect in this draft at qb?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought you made it pretty clear you want Simmons. I like him, I think he could be a very good player in the NFL, but It’s not as much of a need as OL, QB, EDGE etc. I have no idea which way we’re going and my track record in general with the draft has been lacking.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Im just wondering who they will take. I would assume the BPA would be Simmons. But we have more pressing needs than a swiss army knife. Infact we have one with the ne lber we signed

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Brown. He seems to be a great pick at 5. Especially since we were gashed in the run game last year and again, flores is a defensive coach. However Steve has me thinking that hes lazy andceasily handled. I watched the alabama game and seen good and bad from him but really not sure

    Anthony Gordon: 25
    Jacob Eason: 23

I could see this to start off the draft.

    1. Bengals- Burrow
    2. Redskins- Young
    3. Chargers- Herbert (trade up)
    4. Giants- Simmons
    5. Dolphins…

    My thoughts:
If the Chargers trade up, it’s for a QB. I think it’s 50/50 the Giants take Simmons or a OT.

  76. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  77. D's avatar D says:

Brad Kaaya had like a 34 so that will show you the beraing of that test on a QB’s outcome.

  78. D's avatar D says:

Lamar Jackson also scored a 13. Randy Moss a 12. Dalvin Cook and Leonard Fournette 11’s. Frank Gore a 6. Steve McNair, Randall Cunningham, and Jim Kelly, 15’s Terry Bradshaw and Dan Marino 16’s. So and all around them are QB’s that didnt make it, I hate the wonderlic it has no bearing on football ability.

  79. D's avatar D says:

I think wonderlic still wouldn’t be overly useful, BUT might be more useful if they included a few other factors, like how many did they answer out of the total 50. I know i have never made it through he test in the allotted time, but i was 100% accurate in my answers, Like i normally get in low 40’s occasionally as low as upper 30’s, but other than the time i tried just blowing through it for what i considered not a real test, i didn’t finish.

i dont think i can work like that, im highly concerned with accuracy and not as much speed. Maybe that tells something abotu me like i might take a lot of sacks picking out the best receiver, maybe that says though my decision making is great and id be a good QB in some capacity, but not for all sytems. Maybe Wonderlic helps evaluate some finer things, but you have to know a lot more than just the score to make that evaluation.

How much time spend on each question, how many wrong answers were from rushing the question, how many they skipped, etc.

What the wonderlic doesn’t show is the stupid guy that will go across the middle and get hammered, time and time again, or the QB that stands in the pocket amidst the firece pass rush. The smarter you are the less likely you are to take a shot to the head.

YOUNG STANGER: I do remember Marino getting a 16 on the Wonderlic. That, combined with rumors of his alleged “drug issues,” caused him to fall into the later portion of Round One. I remember EXACTLY where I was at the moment they announced his pick on a local radio station. I was running a CT scan on a patient in a hospital in Palm Beach County, so I could NOT jump up and down and high-five a co-worker as I wanted to!! The “CELEBRATION” started a couple of hours later when I arrived at a local bar and met some fellow Dolfans for dinner!!!

      Isn’t Gibson a RB too

Did you take 3 Rbs in a row?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Gibson is a utility guy. His rushes and receptions were close to 50/50 but a good many of his rushes were kind of end arounds when was lined up in the slot. Roughly 65% of his touches came from when he was lined up in the slot. I just didn’t know who to take there. I couldn’t help myself. Gibson is a 6’0″ 228 pound WR/RB/Returner who runs a 4.39.

TBH, Piggy, only reason I use “FirstPick” anymore is when I want to try and do a draft where I make a trade. The other sites you have to pay and join to do that. Otherwise, I think their player rankings are a bit off.

Watching Justin Herbert and wow – his receivers didn’t do him any favors

They didn’t create separation, didn’t get open, dodnt adjust to the ball, didn’t know where the markers were and had a lot of drops

Bree land was his best receiver
And he’s just pretty good after the catch
He didn’t make the three any easier

Get Herbert some receivers that can play and protect him and he will be fine
