2020 Miami Dolphins Draft – Day 1 Haul

Draft Day 2020, and Day 1 is in the books! Definitely some surprise picks, and one pick a big surprise due to the position it was at. I have felt for some time that if our FO and coaches were satisfied with the medicals on QB Tua Tagovailoa that we would be hearing his name for our team. The great part is, we didn’t have to trade up, we just sat quietly at #5 and made the pick.

With our 2nd pick, I honestly did not have Austin Jackson as my top choice at that point. I was well aware of his story and I think he’s a great kid, he’s only 20 years old. I had Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton and Josh Jones all ranked ahead of Austin Jackson. That doesn’t mean anything at all though, less than nothing actually. Jackson is a high quality character man, of this there is no question. He’s also very talented, and he can likely play either side, LT or RT. He has very good feet and moves well and is an excellent athletic prospect. He just needs help with technique. I think the biggest reason I wasn’t looking at him is because I’m not sure how much of an immediate impact he can make. I felt the other players could step in ASAP and play well enough from day 1.

Our 3rd and final pick of the day I did not see coming. Never had him on the radar. Noah Igbinoghene is a fine DB prospect, although he has only 2 years of experience on defense because he converted to a DB from WR. His bloodlines are strong with 2 Olympic athletes as parents. He can play outside at corner, he can play inside in the slot and has played a little safety too. With the players we currently have on the roster in the secondary, he gives us a lot of matchup versatility. Now I have to practice saying his name! IG-bin-OG-A-nee Like Mahogany but with an Igbin instead of the Maho.

So now comes Day 2, and we still haven’t addressed a few positions that I feel we need to. I was crushed when Cesar Ruiz went to the Saints at #24, two picks before our pick. It’s totally possible that Igbinoghene would still have been the pick, so maybe I should take solace in that. In any case, center is a position of need, and the next best player is Lloyd Cushenberry. At RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off the board to the SB Champion Chiefs, leaving less than a handful of top RB prospects. D’Andre Swift is the best, followed by Jonathan Taylor, J.K. Dobbins and Cam Akers. After that, I think you’re looking more at complimentary players, not guys that can be your primary back. Jordan Howard is already coming off an injury, we need to find someone who can be a feature back if need be.

I’m hoping that taking DB Noah Igbinoghene stifles our need for secondary help. I don’t want another pick on a safety, let’s get some pass rushers and defensive tackle help. As D pointed in our draft article, there quite a few guys who should be available to us in RD 2-5, DE Jonathan Greenard (RD 2), DE Jabari Zuniga (RD 4), DT Marlon Davidson (RD 4) DT Nick Coe (RD 4). We need to get some interior DL filler and some pass rushers.

Here’s hoping we can ALL be happy with Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft!

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seems there’s a pattern to our DBs. The guys that were pure safeties are gone, Jones and TJ, the other so called safety was more of the hybrid we seem to like, but is a safety first, Minkah he’s gone. The current relevant ones seem to be CBs first, McCain, Rowe, and now Noah.

First job description cover, no big hitters, since you can’t do it any longer, tackle second.

The beer thing is good. How many past picks have been 23 or 24+?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mold them the way you want, before it’s too late.

It does appear there’s no rush to make the playoffs this year.

All 3 were about the future for sure. We could have gotten in older and more polished, but we did not. Pats way….. build a team, a deep team.

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We need RB, DT, and OT. The RB should come in the 2nd, the DT should be a rotation guy run stuffer that comes in the 5th, and the OT should be 2nd. The rest of the picks fill some future possible problems or trade for 2021 picks.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There are currently 11 new FA players on the roster without a number. We will have added 8-15 players by the end of the weekend.

    1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 20, 32, 35, 39, 44, 45, 50, 53, 54, 58, 59, 60, 61, 66, 67, 68, 71, 72, 73, 75, 76 & 79 are available.

Numbers will not be settled until after cut downs this year guys.

    I say Tua takes 10

So if we had kept him, we would’ve had to pay out crazy money without the return. In retrospect the trade now looks great.

Not saying he sucks, but you can get his level of play for far less.

Zeirlein has us taking Swift, Gallimore and Delpit, in that order, tonight.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hard to believe we’d go safety, based on last pick and what I mentioned earlier about acquiring DB tendencies.

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s why the cheats cut guys loose the year before, as we should’ve done with Juwan James. Instead they give us a lame late, late 4th.

RE: the rumor about Miami being willing to trade OUT of the #39 pick. I would take a 2nd next year to trade out.

    • D's avatar D says:

Nah, 1st next year to trade out of the spot, 2nd this year with some change, depending on how far we trade back, maybe a low third or a high 4th

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Why take a 2nd next year? The value of a pick in today’s draft is worth 1 higher round than next year’s.

Lloyd Cushenberry should be Miami’s first pick in round 2. Lest we forget, “Cush” was FIRST TEAM ALL S.E.C. THIS SEASON!!! As for the running back position, I’d prefer Taylor over Swift because Taylor is a “home run” threat on any given carry, while Swift, who isn’t as “swift,” is more of a head-banging straight ahead runner (which isn’t necessarily bad). I think this coaching staff is looking for “chunk yardage” guys who can break big plays at any time. If that’s still true, then Jonathan Taylor is your man.

Got what might be a bit of not so good news from my orthopedic surgeon. He says I’m scheduled for an MRI on my left knee in seven days. He’s done two procedures on my wife. And he’s also the orthopedic surgeon for the Tampa Bay Lightning. If I need surgery on my PCL, he says I’ll miss about 3 weeks of work. However, if my wife will let me borrow her fancy walker, I’ll be back to work much sooner than 3 weeks. Anyway, we’ll all know a lot more when the report of my MRI is done. As usual, my positive outlook will carry me through this. I have so many more counterfeit coins to diagnose before I retire!!

  34. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Rock,

Agreed on Tim Allen. It’s pretty much the only Tim Allen thing I’ve ever liked. I watched a great documentary on Galaxy Quest, and they talk about Alan Rickman and how he didn’t have much enthusiasm for Tim Allen’s acting abilities. Rickman was a well known curmudgeon with a very dry sense of humor.

The story goes: In a scene near the end of the movie where Tim Allen has to own up to his lies to the naive alien, it gets very emotional. Allen, after doing the take and pouring his heart into it, was himself very emotional and asked to be excused because it was hitting him pretty hard. Rickman leans over to the director and says “look, he just experienced acting for the first time”

    LOL, Alan Rickman was awesome.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

How would folks feel about John Simpson from Clemson at guard? 2nd round might be a little high but he could be a plug and play guard who would add some toughness and physical presence to a line that needs it.

I liked Simpson in the 4th but not sure he will last until we pick. As far as IOL not counting centers, I have Robert Hunt, Jonah Jackson, Solomon Kindley, Netane Muti and Damien Lewis ahead of him. But who the hell am I, LOL.

I’m curious to what you guys call your ranking. Do you actually watch game film for each of these guys? Or how do you rank players?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, try to watch game tape but also from watching games. I watch all day long at work since I’m here 12 hours a day every weekend. My rankings don’t mean jack cause I don’t know about every player. Especially west coast teams unless they are top ranked. I try to learn and watch as much as possible between the end of the season and the draft.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t care whether you watch them all or not, just that you watch and it’s your opinion. What I was getting at is whether it’s your opinion or something you heard or read from someone’s ranking.

Good, bad or indifferent your opinion, everyone’s opinion, is what I want. We can debate your opinion, but if it’s not yours, what’s the point.

I would expect everyone else with an outspoken opinion would do the same.

    • D's avatar D says:

for me its heavy doses of football on Saturdays lol to start with, thats why i tend to gravitate towards SEC players more.i listen to pundits talk about guys they like and then i start to look at them and see if i agree. Then i go out from there, and while im looking at a guy i might have been turned on to by a pundit or another person, sometimes people from here, i watch the other people in the games too. By the time im done with all that i have people i like or people im going to keep an eye on for next year. For OL i particularly watch for body lean, first step reaction, how well they can move their feet, set and reset anchors, adapt to situation and have to recover. I really dont care about size unless its a hindrance, ie they dont compensate with core strength, and vice versa. I try to find them matched up with another player i also know the strengths and weaknesses of to give me a better insight on them

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I was pretty sure you did that, but holy fuck you guys spend a lot of time with this shit. I tend to only watch the game film for the top couple of rounds for a few of our positions of need.

I’ve also heard comments here that make me wonder, if some just watch highlights, but most that make draft prospect comments here are pretty hard core.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Also learn about players through various draft websites then look them up and try to find game tape. It’s hard to find actual game tape at times. I’ll even watch reruns of games on SEC and ACC network. I have no life. LOL

This is bad news for the entire country, except the cheats. Anyone that pays for cable tv or buys any products that has advertising done by the NFL, now has to pay more. This raises the amount all teams will pay in the future, except the cheats as they don’t pay, they just rinse and repeat.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ezra can probably do both T/G but not considered a plug and play at tackle but could be at guard. I can’t remember where I read that. It was one of those draft sites like SBNation or Sporting News.

  44. Randy's avatar Randy says:

No worries. I was just curious, as I’ve been looking at guard prospects again. There are some tackles I’d take and put at guard. Hunt, for example is probably a G in the NFL, but he might also be able to be a RT.
    ***
Lewis is a slow, plodder who’s a solid run blocker, but he’s gonna struggle with speed and movement. Plus, he’s probably only a RG. I just think Simpson is the best pure guard prospect. He’s not a great athlete either, but he is mobile enough and could play either side.

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Steve, I use multiple sources to form my own opinion.

  46. D's avatar D says:

I think the most useful way to scout is find a game, and dont just look at highlights from that game, but the full game against an opponent or a specific player thats pretty standout and see how they handle the best competition, both one on one and when the D or O scheme by that team is good. consistency is key so you need to see the right things done most plays against the best competition. Thats the game thats going to show you what they are likely capable of in the NFL where it pretty much is a day in day out thing. Also its hard to analyze everythig but pick out some points you think is crucia, like hand placement or whatever and watch that factor and see if they have it. and look for fuck ups because they will stand out and see if there is a consistent thing they do poorly that causes it. It does take a lot of time, but im already watching the games so that first part is just me enjoying the game, and the other part is me enjoying the scouting so its not a burden really its kinda fun for me.

    • D's avatar D says:

Oh and watch two prospects against the same team or player if you can to differentiate the two from one another. Thats what ya have to try to do when fine tuning your rank.

I don’t even have ESPN or NFL network anymore. I genuinely don’t feel the need. I may ripinto the occasional mobster for thinking they are better than the pros in the NFL, but in all honesty, when it comes to analysis, what you get on this site is easily as good and usually better than anything you get on NFL Network and ESPN IMO.

Any network that makes Booger McFarland an analyst during the draft has zero credibility. Why should I even bother with them. I’ll take our guys at FU. All my own predictions and ideas about the draft come from what I’ve read here. I seriously haven’t even looked at anything else.

    • D's avatar D says:

Also i dont try to rep myself as better than anyone, i just have opinions based upon what i see, its not like i am an expert at any of this and i might be wholly off, but if im off i came to it on my own and ill own it. I can be stubborn about it, but shit when you put effort into something it stings if it just gets cast aside with no really justification. Everyone here is solid analysts and its godo to get the big picture from what others see to add to your own thoughts. Gives you a better idea of these guys when input is coming in from so many sources.

  50. D's avatar D says:

there were a couple things that Daniel Jerimiah pointed out maybe a few weeks ago when Thomas started dropping on everyone’s boards that just struck me though. I watched the same plays he did, literally he posted the play and he was like see how Thomas made i mistake here and went to the inside, he got tricked by the DE. It was a play where Thomas still kept the pocket clean, yes did make a mistake but recovered and rode the DE outside the pocket with a final show that cleared him completely. So is that a fail or a win? i thought it was a win, because fuckups happen and recovery is important. He had like 2 or 3 examples of plays similar to that, every one of them Thomas successfully blocked his guy in the end. Now if thats happening consistently, thats a problem, if its not, then thats a positive. Point being, i think on plays you can sometimes see different things, so evals come up all over the place, doesn’t matter how much you research, etc, you are only as good as the people who trust what ya say. I actually trust most here more than most the dolphins reporters, who im not sure i have ever heard much from them that sounded like real football knowledge.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. I read 5-6 evals on a player then try and find game tape on him and formulate my own opinion. Of course, who am I. LOL It’s just something I like to do.

I am no professional scout. I watch a lot of pro college football during the season. I will watch footage posted here and there and I read opinions of so called analysts and offer my opinions as an amateur and try not to take myself too seriously about this stuff

  55. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve, my opinions are mostly formed between February and April by reading every draft analysis I can find. I don’t watch a lot of college ball so my player rankings are predicated on reading what the “experts” say. I paid for the damn PFF subscription so I use it. LOL

CBS Sports, Walterfootball, PFF, NFL Lineups, then I do like 100 daily mock drafts during the off season.

So I am vomiting back up consensus opinions I guess.

What I think lots of people don’t assess when they watch film is what the other guy did. So, if Thomas eventually gets his guy blocked even tho he may have taken a wrong step, what did the defender do to create that situation? Then, I always think about what would have happened on that play if it were against an NFL player? Mistakes that guys can makeup for against college competition….end up being plays not made in the NFL.
    ***
Personally, I didn’t really like any of the LT prospects in this draft.

    • D's avatar D says:

True, but i cant find many instances where he made those mistakes, so it really didnt change my opinion of him. Thomas had the most elite footwork of all of them, Wills i think was pretty good too but im not as sure as most about the moving from right to left, because i have played the position and i know its not that simple. Sure you can pick it up but there is a good chance by that point in their careers, it might be too ingrained to ever really be able to flip sides. It definitely isn’t a snap your fingers kind of thing. Thoma was to me the only one that replaced Tunsil with potentially an even better player, the others i wasn’t extremely high on either.

  57. D's avatar D says:

I dont really care where the opinions come from i like to hear them, and i like to know if faced with a counter opinion to my own, do i still agree with me or should i open up to a different view. Its how ya grow/evolved and get better. So there is no real reason to care much, if it helps you root into your beliefs. then you dont have to bother when ya hear it again 30 more times lol.

Those two UF pass rushers and maybe the 2 centers Biadasz/cushenberry will probably be available in the 3rd
        —————————————-
One will be gone in the second i think. I dont think Greenard will make it to us on the third, maybe to 56 but not to our third i dont think. Zuniga might make it to our first 4th,would be safer to take him in the 3rd though

  60. D's avatar D says:

Its just like anything, you start at point A, either watching a game and noticing them, or hearing about them from someone that gets ya interested. Then you pop in a highlight video, then you start looking at game tapes, then some matchup tapes it takes all of that to get a good opinion.

  62. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,
You’re probably not surprised but I don’t read many evaluations. I do for positions I don’t care much about like WRs….just to know who the “top” guys are, but I also don’t give my opinion on those positions all that often either. But, for OL, I watch tons of video on probably the top 10-15 guys at every position. DL is probably my next focus. It’s not that hard. I grew up studying game film and enjoy it. It kind of depends on what our needs are. I don’t bother looking at mock drafts either. They’re pointless.

    • D's avatar D says:

well and you know the Iowa’s and Wisconsin’s and Minnesota’s which are solid schools, mostly for OL but TE and RB too, so you bring a lot of first hand regional player information.

I think it’s pretty easy to discern which mobsters are just expressing a light opinion of draft prospects, as much to join in the conversation as anything else, (I fall into this category), and the guys who put real time and effort into a more detailed opinion. And yeah, it’s all just opinion. This is a good community. And it was fun to watch it culminate last night in an FU draft with a 10 for 10 start. Awesome stuff.

  65. D's avatar D says:

Im liking the third round this year for some good value on players. I wouldnt be hurt at all if we traded back on that firs second for a slightly lower second maybe pick 45-48 ish and pick up a 3rd if possible or a high 4th to package and move up to a 3rd.

  66. D's avatar D says:

We did pretty good with our group mock didnt we?

I’m starting to think the level of consensus footbal IQ here is so high, maybe it’s why I call the media U75. In comparison they seem really stupid, some are, but probably most aren’t.

I think you guys should pat yourselves on the back.

  68. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m trying to understand the lack of attention to the DL/edge. We had one the lowest sack totals and terrible issues stopping the run. We took a CB and traded down to do so.

Not trying to rush the process, but everything starts in the trenches.

We haven’t added anything to the DL via FA or draft, have we? Maybe it’s a case of too many needs.

  69. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Damn no nap before the draft tonight lol, oh well. Fridays always like that, starts just a little too early to get a good nap in.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
Well then you’ll like this tidbit. Ben Bartch from a small MIAC school in MN as a tackle prospect. He’s a young kid who started out as a TE and ended up being a pretty good tackle. He comes from a historically very successful small school but held his own at the senior bowl. He’s a kid I’d look at later in the draft or even as a FA.

    • D's avatar D says:

I didn’t do a lot of research on him but i did get some feedback on him from one of my friends who is part of the Senior Bowl. I think i have heard he is probably going to be available in that range where we have the 3 5’s and possibly to the 6th. Thats the kind of players ya need to get depth, hungry players with upside who at very least wind up giving you options down the road.

  73. D's avatar D says:

Krishna, we have Wilkins and Godchaux as primary DT, and then hybrid DE/DT like Charlton, Lawson, Ogbah, and Moss. I bet we add another one tonight. Thats pretty solid right now.

I don’t watch college ball, so I do a lot of research. I watch some matchups against good competition but it’s hard to just watch that one player. Mostly I just read up as much as I can on different sources and after enough research, you kind of form an idea about each player. Even if I watched the games, I would still do that because I wouldn’t trust my judgement as the sole source.

Piggy – If we fucking take a safety I’m going to eat a pond of bacon on Sunday! WTF!!!

    Here’s your trade 39 for a 2021 1st

Saints may trade a 2021 pick for a high pick tonight

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t mind moving down a little but the saints don’t have a second

If we move down it’s only to build ammo to move up
But not with a team that doesn’t have a second

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Saints better bring more than the 28th pick in 2021 to move up to early 2nd.

  86. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Piggy. The Saints don’t have a second which is why they are trading next year’s 1st for an early 2nd this year. Make them throw in a 4th this year, trade back in.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can we please draft a RB? I don’t care about adding a 6th safety when we can’t block and we don’t have a run game. Safety seems very much like a luxury pick and not a need at this point. That’s how I feel

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I want another OL and some pass rush and DT before we look at a safety

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      Sure!
I’m OK with Dobbins and the rest being OL!!!!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Agree, so Jones

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      You’ll get a RB
Only one went yesterday and that was 32
Swift, Dobbins, Taylor, Moss, Dillon, Eno, Akers, Mcfarland, Kelly, Vaughn and Perrine

It’s probably not a great idea to take a RB at 39, unless you think one is head and tails better than the rest

The position was barely tapped into last night

Safety though, once a run starts this round, the top tier is gone

And OT is already really thinned out

I think those positions jump out to me as priority targets

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – You don’t think Swift is worth the 39th? I would have been happy with him at #26!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He’s worth it

I’m just trying to get as much juice from the lemon as I can
The draft is still very deep at RB
I don’t think Swift is considerably better than some of the others
Although he stands out as more versatile
But I’m not so sure guys like Kelly, Perrine, Akers or Vaughn won’t be excellent for us

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t look at it as what he’s worth, look at it as where you think you can get him. Its like buying a house, when you fall in love you pay too much.

We’ve got a few positions we need in addition to RB, so you need to be smart about it.

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Selfishly, I kinda hope we draft Epenesa. He’s not a big time sack guy, but I do think he’d be a great fit in a defense that likes to move guys around and create mismatches. He can play inside and outside and is really solid against the run. Hard worker. Good leader. Coachable. And, he fits if we are looking at a rotation-heavy pass rush.

  90. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m with Mike E. Build an OL. It seems we have a ton of DBs. Is this still a weakness?

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:
