2020 Miami Dolphins Draft – Day 1 Haul

Draft Day 2020, and Day 1 is in the books! Definitely some surprise picks, and one pick a big surprise due to the position it was at. I have felt for some time that if our FO and coaches were satisfied with the medicals on QB Tua Tagovailoa that we would be hearing his name for our team. The great part is, we didn’t have to trade up, we just sat quietly at #5 and made the pick.

With our 2nd pick, I honestly did not have Austin Jackson as my top choice at that point. I was well aware of his story and I think he’s a great kid, he’s only 20 years old. I had Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton and Josh Jones all ranked ahead of Austin Jackson. That doesn’t mean anything at all though, less than nothing actually. Jackson is a high quality character man, of this there is no question. He’s also very talented, and he can likely play either side, LT or RT. He has very good feet and moves well and is an excellent athletic prospect. He just needs help with technique. I think the biggest reason I wasn’t looking at him is because I’m not sure how much of an immediate impact he can make. I felt the other players could step in ASAP and play well enough from day 1.

Our 3rd and final pick of the day I did not see coming. Never had him on the radar. Noah Igbinoghene is a fine DB prospect, although he has only 2 years of experience on defense because he converted to a DB from WR. His bloodlines are strong with 2 Olympic athletes as parents. He can play outside at corner, he can play inside in the slot and has played a little safety too. With the players we currently have on the roster in the secondary, he gives us a lot of matchup versatility. Now I have to practice saying his name! IG-bin-OG-A-nee Like Mahogany but with an Igbin instead of the Maho.

So now comes Day 2, and we still haven’t addressed a few positions that I feel we need to. I was crushed when Cesar Ruiz went to the Saints at #24, two picks before our pick. It’s totally possible that Igbinoghene would still have been the pick, so maybe I should take solace in that. In any case, center is a position of need, and the next best player is Lloyd Cushenberry. At RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off the board to the SB Champion Chiefs, leaving less than a handful of top RB prospects. D’Andre Swift is the best, followed by Jonathan Taylor, J.K. Dobbins and Cam Akers. After that, I think you’re looking more at complimentary players, not guys that can be your primary back. Jordan Howard is already coming off an injury, we need to find someone who can be a feature back if need be.

I’m hoping that taking DB Noah Igbinoghene stifles our need for secondary help. I don’t want another pick on a safety, let’s get some pass rushers and defensive tackle help. As D pointed in our draft article, there quite a few guys who should be available to us in RD 2-5, DE Jonathan Greenard (RD 2), DE Jabari Zuniga (RD 4), DT Marlon Davidson (RD 4) DT Nick Coe (RD 4). We need to get some interior DL filler and some pass rushers.

Here’s hoping we can ALL be happy with Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft!

Damn so it looks like all the little biddy guys are gonna be gone. I mean two db picks to go with 4 starters. Room for maybe 4 more. 1 will be Fejedelem, a few guys with promise are going to be SOL

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The D is stacked now. Only thing else to draft is depth and STs unless looking for some bodies to add to the DL rotation.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

2 DBs is a surprise, 2 OL was mandatory, a QB was about time, and a DT that can move and is huge.

Can’t complain, not sure what else we can do except RB and DE. We took OV in the 4th that got the massive contract from the Giants.

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

They may trade out of the 5th round for compensation next year. Maybe a 5th this year for a 4th next year. They could also do that in the 7th

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We need some more 3rd rounders next year. Trade the 4ths.

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Howard, B. Jones1, B. jones2, Iggy, Rowe, flej….whatever, McCain, Needham

    Who am I missing?

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The old drinking too much water excuse….

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’d keep about 3 guys from our defense last year. Keep drafting!

  9. D's avatar D says:

Crap there goes the RB I wanted

  10. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Damn, Davon Hamilton is gone. I guess Leki Fotu would be my next choice for a NT. After that all my favorites are gone…

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yep, maybe 4. X. Wilkins. Baker. And…maybe Godchaux. That’s about it. I’d have no problem replacing the rest.

  12. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Broncos fan screen was definitely my favorite so far

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
He was okay, but he doesn’t give you a lot of versatility and we sucked at his main job….stopping the run. I don’t think he was really all that good when we couldn’t stop anybody’s running game. Still, I would have no problem replacing him.

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Trade up
    I’m bored

  15. D's avatar D says:

Adrian Colbert, Hartage, Lewis, Webster, Tankersly

  16. D's avatar D says:

If TJ Slaton had declared this year I’d be all in on him as out NT/DT. Maybe next year. He is really soling pass rush and run stuffer. Want to see how he does this next year at UF

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
We just signed 8 defensive FAs, and we just drafted several more already. We’ll have a dozen new defensive players. I think we needed a bit more than 3 or 4 new players. But hey…I do think we’ll be better.

  18. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The jests are taking all the guys I want

  19. D's avatar D says:

WTF is happening to Greenard. Wonder what I missed the guy was sick at UF.

dangit Gase needs to get in the head of Zuniga and ruin him. he is hard to block.

    • D's avatar D says:

He is strong and violent he fights through blocks. He makes mistakes setting the edge sometimes though. Goes for the TFL and gets it a lot but can fuck you if you miss in the NFL

Yea, but we pretty much only have Wilkins, Godchaux, and Sieler as our DT,big DE. I think we needed depth, 2 DT. It’s not a glaring need, but depth is needed imo.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t have to do everything this year. QB, 2-OL, 1 DL along with 2 DBs in the first 3 rounds.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

We are talking about the 4th round. We have a bunch of picks, we are going to take more than 1 player in many positions. Why is it any different than people asking for a 3rd OL. Give me a break, I can give my opinions too.🙄

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was not looking for a conflict with my response. It was more vague like one thing at a time. We did more than one thing at a time. 🙂

  22. D's avatar D says:

I got the round right for Zuniga though I did think he COULD drop to 4th but I’m a round off on Greenard on the bad side.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The raiders drafted a wildcat QB

  24. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Did the Raiders take only WRs in this draft?

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

They should have panned over so we could check out Jerry Jones’ prostitute.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Neville Gallimore was the DT I wanted, but i think our DT is better.

  27. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Lol…great pick

  28. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Ah fuck there goes Cushenberry

  29. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    too bad
Jennings is a great pick for them.

  36. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought that was going to be Fromm as well. This means 1 of 2 things. They either really like Stidham or they are going to sign Cam

  37. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

so i guess we’re not trading back in, huh?
    bed then.

  38. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

NE loading up on QB crushers for taking out AFC E rivals.

  39. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ok, we’re getting to the point where it might happen if we’re going to trade back into the round. There have been so few trades though. I really feel like the uncertainty of going into this new draft format had to play a roll.

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, no more manhattans for the Commish

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Kong,
I think there was just a lot of similar, so-so talent in this draft. There just weren’t a lot of guys worth making trades to get. You could keep your picks and get similar value.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The first round went pretty smoothly, so if there was a concern about the format, you’d think teams might have adjusted in day 2 and we’d see more trades, so you’re likely right.

  42. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

We should be fucking trading back in too

  47. Ken's avatar Ken says:

A TE interesting they are not drafting a QB

  48. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, a mash up of Jerry Jones prostitutes. And the Commish looks like he’s doing a reading of The Night Before Christmas.

  49. D's avatar D says:

    There goes BBMs guy

  50. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats are just FN with everyone, they’ll take Eason or Fromm in the 6th.

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Cameron Wolfe
    ESPN Staff Writer
Dolphins fans are going to like Brandon Jones. Just talking to him for 5 minutes, you can tell he’s an intelligent player & a team guy. Jones says he requested film of every NFL defense in the predraft process to preview. It took him 8 weeks to finish but he said it was helpful.

  52. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Let’s trade up an take a RB

  53. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Maybe GB is gonna trade Rodgers to NE. Wouldn’t that be something?

  54. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess RB not high on the priority list. Not sure why

  60. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Alright a Uconn guy

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,
Maybe it just wasn’t high on their priorities this year.

There are still a couple of good FA RBs out there. Hyde, Miller, hell we could pick Gore back up. Pair whomever with Howard for a year, add a scat back tomorrow, then address the position next year.

  62. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Big fan of Tanner Muse

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  64. D's avatar D says:

I think the commish is drunk lol. His face is fucking red and his eyes look bloodshot

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
I don’t think he’s probably a long term answer, but what about Jordan Howard? He’s a starter if healthy. Are you worried about injury with him?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We need depth behind him. I mean we really don’t have anyone else on the roster of note

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, he’s coming off injury and we have no one you can count on behind him. I know the OL was part of the reason we couldn’t run but the RB’s are definitely an issue

  66. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

patriots have trade back in twice now

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL… thought the same thing with Goodell being buzzed.

  68. D's avatar D says:

Patriots heard me that 3rd round was a sweet spot

  69. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Another TE

  70. D's avatar D says:

    There is their Arron Hernandez

  71. D's avatar D says:

Primus is one of my favorite bands. Awesome to see live. Seeing that Claypool guy keep making me think of them.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Bellicheat is gonna keep running a ball control TE-centric offense and lean on his defense. Nothing new….just no Brady to run it.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
I love the video for “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”. Great tune. The bass is awesome, of course.

    • D's avatar D says:

There are several I like, like nature boy, Jerry was a racecar driver, wynona, damn blue collar tweakers. Claypool can play anything with strings but he is a master with the bass guitar

  74. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Holy shit Goodell is bombed

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We got good players in Hunt, Davis and zones today

I just can’t believe we didn’t move up with all those day 3 pics

    We have 9 picks tomorrow

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we wanted to feast in the 4th round – the guys who are still there and high on our board. 4th-2, 5th-3, 6th-1, 7th-3.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Yeah

The talent I know is thinning out though

There are 3 RBs on my radar: Kelly, Perrine and Benjamin
A couple of OL: Kindley, Trockmorton, Adams, The Prince dude and Biadasz
But only one pass rusher: kenny willekes

There’s a bunch of receivers and some TEs

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        4, 5 and 6 to trade up.
        4, 5 and 7 to trade up.

We still have a 5 and two 7’s too add competition, maybe a gem or backup/STs.

  76. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

You go see Primus to hear what cover song they play better than the original. Lol

Seen them many times as well as the many Claypool solo stints and other bands. Always great. Been a fan since the late 80s when I lived in Cali.

  77. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

A bit surprised no RB taken. Oh well.

I trust in what they are doing.

    GO FINS

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When we think about multiple, that may also mean offense. What is we face an opponent who have big powerful DTs – maybe Hunt plays inside that week, next week there is a big LDE and now he plays RT. Matchups!

If defensive players can move around why not offense? It’s the same deal.

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Just to be clear, I’m not putting faith in these grades, thinking it was interesting read.

    Coach em up, coach.

I like 3 out of 5 devoted to trenches.

Can’t run or pass or protect the glass without an OL.

hopefully, defense is transforming to top 10. Boy is that a homer comment.

  80. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Perkins is pretty positive?

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can’t figure out the Br. Jones pick. Where does he play? Is he any good?

I suppose Igbinoghene will be the nickel and Jones the dime?

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Davis in the DL rotation, Hunt and Jackson the OTs. This is what I’m hoping for, just throw them in the fire and don’t worry about record.

My wish list was getting guys that contribute on a regular basis. Don’t really care about starters, except OL.

  83. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    RB, TE, Edge

  84. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

154, 172, 185 to move up to 114 Az. 107 is the next pick.

    That gives us 3 4ths, 1 5th, 1 6th, 3 7s.

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Those grades, both different lists, are ridiculously low.
We got a very fast, smooth, light on his feet young LT Jackson, with a high ceiling.
Tua is a lefty, and highly improvisational, so the LT needs to be able to seek and destroy at the second level on open field plays off roll outs and play action and wild scrambles to his side.

    check

For RT, now the blind side, we need a guy who will kill anyone trying to hit Tua, CHECK.
Meet Robert Hunt, junkyard watchdog, alley fighter, smashmouth guard on a tackle’s feet.
Nobody is gonna bullrush over top of Hunt. Rushers on his side are in for a fist fight every play.
No glory in that. That shit gets old. OLBs at halftime be like “coach? lemme do a stunt more. man.”

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You think you had a bad night predicting our picks?
Travis Wingfield listed 20 guys he thought we’d pick in Round 2.
    We picked none of them.

Wait … maybe that was part of the house smoke screen.

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think it’s been a jump up and down draft, but I liked it so far. It’s got some prospects, but it’s also got guys with some really nice potential. We’ll find out in 2-3 years. There are more drafts to come.

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

These graders are missing the point.
Flores wants a bus full of guys opponents hate to play.
Not because of their shiny talent,
but because of their gritty, bruising, relentless, second skin obnoxious, in your face style.
This is football. These are football players.
Miami is transitioning away from finesse to smashmouth,
    and they’re doing it fast.
