2020 Miami Dolphins Draft – Day 1 Haul

Draft Day 2020, and Day 1 is in the books! Definitely some surprise picks, and one pick a big surprise due to the position it was at. I have felt for some time that if our FO and coaches were satisfied with the medicals on QB Tua Tagovailoa that we would be hearing his name for our team. The great part is, we didn’t have to trade up, we just sat quietly at #5 and made the pick.

With our 2nd pick, I honestly did not have Austin Jackson as my top choice at that point. I was well aware of his story and I think he’s a great kid, he’s only 20 years old. I had Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton and Josh Jones all ranked ahead of Austin Jackson. That doesn’t mean anything at all though, less than nothing actually. Jackson is a high quality character man, of this there is no question. He’s also very talented, and he can likely play either side, LT or RT. He has very good feet and moves well and is an excellent athletic prospect. He just needs help with technique. I think the biggest reason I wasn’t looking at him is because I’m not sure how much of an immediate impact he can make. I felt the other players could step in ASAP and play well enough from day 1.

Our 3rd and final pick of the day I did not see coming. Never had him on the radar. Noah Igbinoghene is a fine DB prospect, although he has only 2 years of experience on defense because he converted to a DB from WR. His bloodlines are strong with 2 Olympic athletes as parents. He can play outside at corner, he can play inside in the slot and has played a little safety too. With the players we currently have on the roster in the secondary, he gives us a lot of matchup versatility. Now I have to practice saying his name! IG-bin-OG-A-nee Like Mahogany but with an Igbin instead of the Maho.

So now comes Day 2, and we still haven’t addressed a few positions that I feel we need to. I was crushed when Cesar Ruiz went to the Saints at #24, two picks before our pick. It’s totally possible that Igbinoghene would still have been the pick, so maybe I should take solace in that. In any case, center is a position of need, and the next best player is Lloyd Cushenberry. At RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off the board to the SB Champion Chiefs, leaving less than a handful of top RB prospects. D’Andre Swift is the best, followed by Jonathan Taylor, J.K. Dobbins and Cam Akers. After that, I think you’re looking more at complimentary players, not guys that can be your primary back. Jordan Howard is already coming off an injury, we need to find someone who can be a feature back if need be.

I’m hoping that taking DB Noah Igbinoghene stifles our need for secondary help. I don’t want another pick on a safety, let’s get some pass rushers and defensive tackle help. As D pointed in our draft article, there quite a few guys who should be available to us in RD 2-5, DE Jonathan Greenard (RD 2), DE Jabari Zuniga (RD 4), DT Marlon Davidson (RD 4) DT Nick Coe (RD 4). We need to get some interior DL filler and some pass rushers.

Here’s hoping we can ALL be happy with Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft!

  1. D's avatar D says:

So I’m hearing Jacksonville is wanting a 4th for Fornette, he definitely better than any of the RBs left. Pull the trigger on that trade?

  2. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Still some good Centers left!

Darryl Williams Miss. State C/OG 3
    Jake Hanson Oregon C/OG 3
Netane Muti Fresno St. OG/C 2
    Nick Harris Washington OG/C 2
    Trystan Colon-Castillo Missouri OG/C 3
    Tyler Biadasz Wisconsin C/OG 2
    Zach Shackelford Texas C/OG 3

  3. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Draft grades at this point is the most meaningless exercise. Personally I am very pleased with what we have done in this draft. We landed a potential franchise QB. We went and got people to protect him. We are also building a much more physical and nasty defense. You can see there is a plan/design to this draft and whole offseason. The only criticism/regret is I wish we landed one of the top RBs in the draft but I am good with what they have done overall

    • D's avatar D says:

To me grading this early is pointless and grading later is hindsight so also pointless. If there are a bunch of misses obviously you look at the job Grier did as a bad one, but a miss or two, is what it is. Grading this is just a way a person can feel they can prove their point, a point that was one to WAY before the grading

  4. D's avatar D says:

I think with all DB talent we have I am not sure there will be plays locked to positions outside of Byron Jones and X the rest could be all over the place.

  5. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    RB’s
AJ Dillon Boston College RB 3

Anthony McFarland Jr. Maryland RB 2
Eno Benjamin Arizona St. RB 3
    Javon Leake Maryland RB 3
    Joshua Kelley UCLA RB 3
    Lamical Perine Florida RB 3

  6. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I’d definitely pull the trigger on a trade for Fornette!
It’s not like we don’t have some draft capitol! 😉

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Theres still some great players to be had. Didnt we get rashad and godchau in the 5th?

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah but you can’t count on that man. There are way more examples of it not working out that way. That’s the flaw in how you are looking at it

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We don’t need to trade for a RB, we just need to select one.

    • D's avatar D says:

But that essentially is selecting one if we give up a 4th to get Fornette. Non of the rest of the running backs are complete backs, they will be rotational or role players, not give us a true compliment back. I’d be for Fornette for a 4th, even if we only got him for two years he’d be worth that trade. There is also a fifth year option for him of we wanted to make it 3

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think we need an open field type RB. Although i havent given up on ballage. Laird looks great as well and maybe Gaskins fills that role

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m just happy to see that it appears Greir and Flores are on the same page and building the team they want here in Miami

  10. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You also have to pay fournette 4m this year

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Eno could be that Darren Sproles modernized type back we don’t have on the roster right now.

  12. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Picks for day 3

    Joshua Kelley UCLA RB
    Nick Harris Washington OG/C
    Tyler Johnson Minnesota WR
    JARED PINKNEY VANDERBILT TE
SHANE LEMIEUX OREGON G OR Solomon Kindley Georgia OG

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have a feeling like some mentioned that the Dolphins may try to groom Deiter at C, Right now it’s probably looking like this . . .
    LT Austin Jackson
    LG Ereck Flowers
    C Ted Karras
    RG Robert Hunt
    RT Jesse Davis

He could also be a step in backup at each guard position. Very possible we don’t pick up a C in this draft.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      Our depth is horrible!
So just because they won’t start right away doesn’t mean they won’t bring value to the team!

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        We have 9 picks today

I think we might see an OL or 2 today

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It also might be

        LT Austin Jackson
        LG Ereck Flowers
        C Ted Karras
        RG Deiter
        RT Robert Hunt

With versatile Davis being the next man up in most cases

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t know, you have Julie’n Davenport, Shaq Calhoun, Danny Isidora and the previously mentioned Deiter. We drafted 2 guys for the line, do you think we’re going to draft 4 or 5?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Don’t know why we have 9 picks today….lol

  14. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I just don’t know how much more value you can get out of 9 picks in last 4 rounds?

Seems we could have used the draft capital to move around a bit more and help next year. Very odd to me.

  15. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Fournette publicly criticized minschew by advocating for newton. Regardless if hes right or wrong do we want that kind of distration?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This isn’t exactly publicly criticizing anyone

“Like I told some people that talked to me, it’s no disrespect to Minshew. I’m just trying to get into the best position as a team [so] we can win,” Fournette said on ESPN. “That’s all that was about. Just friendly competition, because [it] brings out the best in people.”

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Why would the jags be willong to give up a guy they drafted 4th overall for a 4th rnd pick. His contract is not bad at all for his production

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I guess if we could get Fournette for a 4th or 5th it would be worth it, but his attitude issues worry me, but not that much for a 4th or 5th I guess. His talent is unquestionably better than anyone we could draft right now

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Take Kelly/Perrine in the 4th and then pick up this speedy smaller back later

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

woo those are some blistering runs. Gives us another option to Eno.
Is he bigger than Jakim though? Grant is just too small.

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Isn’t there a 3-3-5 Defense?
We could now play that with 3 shutdown corners plus Rowe at safety with CB ball skills and choose between Brandon Jones, Bobby McCain, or one of the guys who filled in last year and that would be a suffocating pass defense.
Front 3 of Wilkins, Shaq, and Ogbah.
LBs Baker, Van Noy, and van Ginkel

That’s a hell of a dime with rushers coming at the QB from everywhere while he sees nobody open.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why does anyone care what someone with half a brain (U75) thinks about our draft?

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    D says:

    Steve, is that you?

    LOFL D at Bobby Lovecock😁

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Don’t forget about

    enooooooooooooooooooooooo
    (Blowing in a conch)
    Enoooooooooooooooooooo

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    LT Austin Jackson
    LG Ereck Flowers
    C Ted Karras
    RG Deiter
    RT Robert Hunt

    That’s my choice.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Also Anthony McFarland is a speedy back
    He’s not my favorite
But with a day 3 pick he can bring that speed

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With those lockdown corners, Ogbah and Lawson will have opportunities to feast.
    Not to mention van Noy.

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    ORob

They are willing to give up on fournette they regret drafting him
    He’s mossed 12 games in a 3 year career
And they are about to have to pay him in free agency if they want to keep him

Fournette and Gurley are examples of what you don’t want to draft RBs so high anymore

Doesn’t mean we can’t get value out of him

Squeeze the juice from that lemon!

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the team likes Jesse Davis. If they really want Hunt at RT then Jesse Davis would be at RG. I don’t think Deiter showed that he’s ready to be the guy at any position, especially not over an established starter like Davis. Uh-uh!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Honestly when I watch Hunt he seems more like an OG
But I haven’t watched him much and I suck at those evaluations anyway

It would be ideal if our 2nd year guy – Deiter comes around though

    • D's avatar D says:

Deiter will have to win the position back and I think Hunt has the inside track to be the RT but obviously the one that kicks inside to OG will be the on that didn’t look as good at RT out of Davis and Hunt.

  27. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Here’s an interesting high risk pick with a day 3 pick
    OT – Trey Adams, Washington

    He was great in 2016
    Than had an acl tear
And then had to get surgery on his way back from injury (for a back injury)

    Real serious medical concerns
It once had a shot to be elite
To you spend a 6th or a 7th on a guy like that and make room for him on your practice squad?

  28. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would probably trade a 5th for fournette

And I expect that to be a short term solution since he’s a free agent in 2021

It’s just a one year pick up
I think we really want/need to be a running team this year in Tua’s redshirt season

So it’s worth it to have a bruiser like fournette for a single season

    • D's avatar D says:

It’s low risk high upside. We have the cap space for it and we would get a semi cheap 5th year option if it pans out

  29. D's avatar D says:

They are cutting loose some of their cap, why get rid of Gurley, why get rid of David Johnson. Same deal. They wanted to go cheaper at the position. It’s also a rumour, I’m not sure if the jags actually want to get rid of him. Maybe it’s nothing.

  30. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This is what happens in the nfl in 2020 when you pay RBs a lot

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He’s been wrong a lot this offseason FWIW

    • D's avatar D says:

When he has actually picked a side lol

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And by wrong I mean it’s pretty clear that The Dolphins FO doesn’t trust our local beat reporters with what they are doing

One of the biggest stories for me is not that we took Tua at 5
It’s how many people came up with crazy scenarios from sources where that would not happen

  32. D's avatar D says:

I think Hunt looks fine at RT.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      me too,
let Davis and Dieter compete for RG.
      We need good depth anyway,
since somebody always gets hurt, even if for only a few games.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Man, I can’t believe we didn’t move back up into the 3rd! WTF? Where is MTP when you want him?

  34. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

A couple of hours ago I saw Mel Kiper’s Top 10 remaining players yet to be selected. (Ya, Ya, I know it’s windbag Kiper!!) –No. 3 on his list is Harrison Bryant, All-American TE from Florida Atlantic. NO introduction is necessary. Bryant is THE TOP PASS RECEIVING TE COMING OUT THIS YEAR AND HE HAS THE NUMBERS TO BACK IT UP!! –So-o-o, if you want a genuine pass receiver at one of your TE positions, Bryant is your man. He FLOURISHED in Lane Kiffin’s pro-style offense at FAU. He topped off his college career with THREE touchdown catches against favored SMU in a December bowl game. HE IS READY!!
    —————
SOME TEAM is going to get Bryant at a bargain basement price. I HOPE IT’s the Dolphins who, so far, have NEVER DRAFTED A SINGLE PLAYER FROM EITHER FAU or FIU!!

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

we need good players at both RT & LT. Most teams best pass rushers regularly line up against the LT. Just because YOUR QB’s blind side is on the opposite side doesn’t mean the league is going to change their personnel up for you. Cam Wake made a career of rushing the QB’s visible side.

The best DE’s rush from that side, we need a good LT on that side.

  36. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

They are saying that due to the virtual style of the draft. Limited conversations with not only other teams but within the organization as well has lead to less draft day trades

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I didn’t think there would good pass rushers left but I just realized Curtis Weaver is still in the board

  38. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Id rather give up picks for yannick vs fournette.
There are some great FA RBs still out there as well. And come with less baggage

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Would trade for yannick in a minute but it’s much more pricey

The thing with fournette is it should be cheap

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Not sure about that. Whom ever gets him will have to work out a contract. Very few teams have that ability right now.
Further more he called the owner a clown and said he was hiding from him.
The owner said he was social distancing and if yannick wants a trade show him the compensation

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You don’t have to work out a contract if you rent him for one year

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Jax has a very thin line. They dont put up with bs. They are shopping fournette. Dumped Foles after giving him a huge contract.
I would think yannicks time there is limited

  39. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So just looking at positions we went QB, OL, CB, OL, DL, S

I can definitely see us taking WR & RB today.

Oh, and Rodrigo Blankenship, K Georgia

  40. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Kenny Willekes is still there too

  41. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Samurais worth bowing to in day 3
Quez Watkins (fast) Collin Johnson (big) Tyler Johnson (slot guy) KJ hill (another slot guy)

Tua is going to need some one to throw slants too
Watkins or Johnson would be nice picks

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I loved so much that the Unicorn came out of nowhere last season before he tore his ACL that I am still holding out hope that he fully recovers and continues his dominant play. The kid just went out there and beat his competition. Remember him taking the interception out of the DB’s hands last year and turning it into a reception? (It’s in the video Rob posted the last blog.)

    GO UNICORN!

  43. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

ORob – They placed the franchise tag on Yannick!

  44. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think you would have to sign yannick to a new contract.
I doubt he likes the tag.
    He may holdout

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I can’t figure out why we want or need 9 day 3 picks.

  46. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Before we can sign these draft picks we’re going to have to cut some guys. Our available cap space is 22M and it’s going to cost 40M to sign them.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I thought you said it would only cost us 10m to sign the rookie group?

      WTF!

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I just wanted to see what it was like to post fake or ignorant news, like the U75s do on a regular basis.

I need to go take another shower, feel like scum of the earth🤔

SB Nation has us up to 18M to sign our rookies, it should’ve gone down, since we traded back a few spots in 1st.

    And that’s what we did

If anyone poops on this draft – YOU ARE MY SWORN ENEMY!

  69. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Fins have a plan and they are sticking to it … regardless of the allure of those skill position players. Building the trench with some really big freaking dudes.

  70. D's avatar D says:

That’s not good for Deiter, there is going to be good depth on the OL

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We gave them back there 4th and our comp 4th to move up

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Kindley … Amazing.
    Build those trenches!

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We gave them 136 & 141 We got 136 from them in trade last year.

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s being reported as both of our 4th to move up
    Which seems like a lot

  75. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Carolina went all defense throughout this draft

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Is Kindley good? His belly is sooooooo freaking huge. He doesn’t LOOK athletic at all. LOOKS like a big tub of lard. Belly hangs.

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Deiter’s issue coming out of college was his relative lack of strength. He’s really not a RG. He was going to need some time to develop. We may see a different player this year, but I don’t think he is a RG. I think folks are writing him off a little too quickly.
    ***
Hunt is gonna struggle with speed because he did in college. He may show that he can move laterally well enough to play RT, but it’s hardly a certainty. He looks like he would be a nice fit at RG. I’d prefer he pan out at RT because I don’t want Davis playing there.
    ***
Jackson may not even be able to start at LT this season….and that’s ok. He is awfully raw. I don’t know if you just throw him out at LT and let him take his lumps. You may want to ease him in a bit. But, that’ll all work itself out in practices.

  78. D's avatar D says:

Wasn’t a lot for one being a late 4th and the other being a late comp 4th

  79. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Maybe Dieter will move to Center.

  80. D's avatar D says:

Kindley paired well with Thomas to make that left side at UGA brutal. He has a lot of core strength, and can move people off the line, he does probably need to shed a little weight so he can get to second level blocks better but he is an immovable object in pass pro and a bulldozer in run block

  81. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

OH SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!! —– FAU’s Harrison Bryant was just taken by the Cleveland Clowns!!!!!!!!
This means no FAU players will be drafted by the Fins this year, either!!!!!
(But the Fins sure as hell DID ADDRESS their O-Line issues!!)

  82. D's avatar D says:

    There goes your DT Naples

  83. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

We have 3 5ths. We may not be done in the 4th

  84. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Love the focus of this draft but I agree having 9 picks on Day 3 is suboptimal. Not only is it bringing in weaker talent, it costs us more money. 26 of the 32 first round picks were 4 to 5 star picks in high school. Talent wins games. There should have been some trades up.

I’m not giving the GMs an excuse with COVID either. Plenty of people working from home, companies finding ways to adjust. I see a guy making picks from his $259 million yacht and remember these are all billion dollar companies. They have the resources to do their jobs.

We’ll see where it goes but I hate we didn’t get a top tier RB considering we are paying a mid tier one $5 million this year. You get RB value in the draft.

    So there it is
    We rebuilt the OL
    Flowers, Jackson, Hunt, Kindley

It may take a year to come together
    But I like the investment

A little sensitive guys? LOL Rob, you don’t need to take a poke at my baldness as a reflex of me pointing out SOMEONE ELSE’S big belly.

Bartch does look good in those clips Randy. I like that he doesn’t give up on his blocks.

You want a small quick RB? Raymond Calais would be a good one as Piggy posted. If we miss on him. There also is JJ Taylor from AZ. He’s 5’5″ but strong. Talk about a RB who is tough to see coming out of the back field.

    Current pick 119 = 56 pts

We have 29, 28.6, 21, 16.2, and 3 1 pointers in the 7th. There will be more trade ups.

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Still have Curtis Weaver and Kenny Willekes available

    D,
Yep. Bartch has worked hard, and he’s only played OL for 2 years. I think he’s only just begun to learn how to play the position. He comes from a very successful small school and has been coached well. His best is in front of him if he can put on a little more strength. I’d take a chance on him. Its also possible he could line up as a 6th OL and give you a little extra because he did play TE too.

    Jets took Perine Danm

  97. D's avatar D says:

    Fuck the jets

So far love the trades, didn’t want to trade up early, TDs 1-3. The 4th we got in the 1st trade back was used to trade up in the 4th to 111.
