2020 Miami Dolphins Draft – Day 1 Haul

Draft Day 2020, and Day 1 is in the books! Definitely some surprise picks, and one pick a big surprise due to the position it was at. I have felt for some time that if our FO and coaches were satisfied with the medicals on QB Tua Tagovailoa that we would be hearing his name for our team. The great part is, we didn’t have to trade up, we just sat quietly at #5 and made the pick.

With our 2nd pick, I honestly did not have Austin Jackson as my top choice at that point. I was well aware of his story and I think he’s a great kid, he’s only 20 years old. I had Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton and Josh Jones all ranked ahead of Austin Jackson. That doesn’t mean anything at all though, less than nothing actually. Jackson is a high quality character man, of this there is no question. He’s also very talented, and he can likely play either side, LT or RT. He has very good feet and moves well and is an excellent athletic prospect. He just needs help with technique. I think the biggest reason I wasn’t looking at him is because I’m not sure how much of an immediate impact he can make. I felt the other players could step in ASAP and play well enough from day 1.

Our 3rd and final pick of the day I did not see coming. Never had him on the radar. Noah Igbinoghene is a fine DB prospect, although he has only 2 years of experience on defense because he converted to a DB from WR. His bloodlines are strong with 2 Olympic athletes as parents. He can play outside at corner, he can play inside in the slot and has played a little safety too. With the players we currently have on the roster in the secondary, he gives us a lot of matchup versatility. Now I have to practice saying his name! IG-bin-OG-A-nee Like Mahogany but with an Igbin instead of the Maho.

So now comes Day 2, and we still haven’t addressed a few positions that I feel we need to. I was crushed when Cesar Ruiz went to the Saints at #24, two picks before our pick. It’s totally possible that Igbinoghene would still have been the pick, so maybe I should take solace in that. In any case, center is a position of need, and the next best player is Lloyd Cushenberry. At RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off the board to the SB Champion Chiefs, leaving less than a handful of top RB prospects. D’Andre Swift is the best, followed by Jonathan Taylor, J.K. Dobbins and Cam Akers. After that, I think you’re looking more at complimentary players, not guys that can be your primary back. Jordan Howard is already coming off an injury, we need to find someone who can be a feature back if need be.

I’m hoping that taking DB Noah Igbinoghene stifles our need for secondary help. I don’t want another pick on a safety, let’s get some pass rushers and defensive tackle help. As D pointed in our draft article, there quite a few guys who should be available to us in RD 2-5, DE Jonathan Greenard (RD 2), DE Jabari Zuniga (RD 4), DT Marlon Davidson (RD 4) DT Nick Coe (RD 4). We need to get some interior DL filler and some pass rushers.

Here’s hoping we can ALL be happy with Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft!

They need to keep one of those 7th rounders to take Blankenship

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Didnt we get one of the 4ths for juwaun james comp?

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Whether the guys work out or not, I’m loving the commitment to upgrading the OL. I’ve been waiting for this for a decade or more.

  4. D's avatar D says:

I would have liked them to have traded back into late third but trading up to high 4th is pretty much the same deal

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

At this point, given what’s left at RB, we aren’t trading up to get one

If we trade up, maybe it’s for a pass rusher or a WR we really like

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Every year at this stage Mel Kipers best available is loaded with QBs

You would think he would get the point by now that he rates them too high

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The pick we traded up with was our Houston pick from last year plus our green bay pick from this year. I was wrong about the comp pick not the Houston pick,

  8. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Dave Hyde will probably repost his Miami needs OL article and gloat a little bit.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The comp for Juwan James was a 4th, we just traded that pick 141 to move up.

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    They acquired a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 second-round pick, CB Johnson Bademosi and T Julien Davenport from the Texans in exchange for T Laremy Tunsil, WR Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 sixth-round pick.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
I wouldn’t mind Anae at this point.

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another quick twitch small RB is JaMykal Hasty from Baylor.

  13. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    I think that eliminates biadasz

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

No, that’s not right either! Where did we get our 4th round pick from?

    Did somebody draft Bartch?

2020 compensatory pick projections feature bad news for the Dolphins

When the Miami Dolphins entered free agency last offseason, the team seemed content to hold their water through the first phase of free agency — intent on cashing in via the departures of several big name players in the form of compensatory picks. It is sound strategy for a team entering a rebuild, every picks counts for something and can be used in trade scenarios or potentially be cashed in for a big steal in the draft.

And so the Dolphins were content to let Ja’Wuan James and Cameron Wake leave in free agency. After all, James had been a middling player with some injury issues in Miami and Cameron Wake, for as good as he’s been, inevitably wasn’t going to be a part of the long-term future here in South Florida.

So off they went. And when the duo left to sign with Denver and Tennessee, respectively, the Dolphins anticipated cashing in some big hits in the compensatory formula. James was made the highest paid right tackle in football and Wake signed a 3-year, $23M deal to play in Tennessee.

Given the Dolphins’ lack of spending, Miami was initially projected to recoup a 2020 3rd-round pick for James and a 2020 5th-round pick for Wake.

Now that the season is over, the latest (and final) compensatory pick projections are out courtesy of Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com. And it’s not good news for Miami.

The compensatory pick for Ja’Wuan James has been downgraded from a 3rd-round pick to a 4th-round pick due to James’ inability to stay healthy this year. James played in just 3 games this season (continuing his trend of missing at least half the season on every odd year he’s been in the NFL).

  19. D's avatar D says:

That’s a good place for Eason. Similar QB in front of him to learn from

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Yeah Randy
Add Anae to the list of Weaver and Willekes

Add a pass rusher to come in and compete to be a part of the rotation
I tend to think that might be one of our upcoming picks
    And maybe WR too

  21. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Does anyone know if Eno Benjamin returns kicks or punts?

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Steelers just took the speedy McFarland….not my favorite anyway

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

RB and TE in the 5th. I like those short powerful RBs, the 5’5″ JJ will do, even though he runs a 4.61 40, but he’s quick.

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I actually like the jests draft and it’s making me sick
Becton, Zuniga, Mims, Davis and Perrine

    Wtf

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Do we have enough Olinemen yet? Prince Tega Wanogho and Shane Lemieux are both still on the board.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Draft today about 8 hours, 6 or 7, if it speeds up in the last few rounds.

  27. D's avatar D says:

Next year’s RB group looks good. Several of them were ones we wanted this year. A lot went back to college this year like Etienne, Hill, Najae Harris, chubba Hubbard, etc do if we dont get a guy this year there will be quality next year. Malik Davis from UF has a shot to be really special too

  28. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    FYI

    Brandon Jones returns punts
    Noah Igb….. returns kicks

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’re loaded on D and have a completely new OL. I don’t care what the jets did.

  30. D's avatar D says:

Piggy think how u feel. Their teal is loaded with former UF guys 😦

  31. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Dallas got a steal with lamb

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If there is a 2020 season it will be easiet to make the post season as 2 teams have been added to it

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Trading our 3rd 5th and 6th could get us to 138 KCs pick.

  34. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d do it a bit different than a lot of you. We have a mirror image QB.

    LT Robert Hunt/Davis
    LG Kindley/Davis
    C Ted Karras/Dieter
    RG Flowers
    RT Austin Jackson

  35. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Edge rusher Bryce Huff is still there to

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Don’t forget about the small school guy RB James Robinson from Illinois State. He is not a burner but a bowling ball at 5’9″ 219 pounds. More in the mold of Howard. He has good vision and really good at setting up his blocks.

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Igbinoghene entered the 2019 season with two preseason All-SEC placements. … Igbinoghene also returned kickoffs and punts for Auburn, showing off his elusive speed and explosive athleticism.

  38. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

This aught to make Bruce smile?

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Fromm is sliding off a cliff. He was projeted 1st rnd last year

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Draft a OT, a G, and a OT/G. Sign a G and a C in FA. Oline officially completely rebuilt.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Jets took a few of the guys you liked, no doubt. Can’t be happy with that

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Biadazz is still available? LOL

I remember see some mocks on here with him at the back of the 1st / top of the 2nd

  43. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

The Davis and Brandon Jones picks make sense in the context of improving run defense… neither are known for impact on pass game but we got lots of other guys to take care of that.

  44. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

James Morgan and Co are EXCITED. I guess he didn’t realize it was the Jest that drafted him…

  45. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Rock/Stanger

    I think it’s Jackson LT
    Hunt RT

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am willing to bet airfare they will be playing them both on each side during camp (if there ever is a camp) Last offseason it seemed like they played everyone everywhere, except for a select few they were trying to settle down in a spot.

  46. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Kerras is our starter they year? Are Biadazz’ injuries the chronic type? Take him in the 6th if he is still there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Think it’s a hip injury
There is some long term concern
But he also has the unfortunate luck of being amazing in 2018 and declining in 2019
      Which always makes people drop

  47. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Glad the Pets didn’t get Eason.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

“Coach Gase, Darnold is hurt, should I go in?…Coach Gase…Coach?…oh, you are drafting plays now…I’ll wait….”

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Gase in his fortress of solitude during the middle of the game creating his magnum opus WR screen…

  48. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

broadcast is 4 to 5 picks behind

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you pronounce Biadasz’s name correctly (Bee-ya-dish), it makes him much less appealing. If only his name was Badass, and he could actually play like it.

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    On Biadasz I just read

Hip surgery before the 2019 season
    Shoulder surgery before the combine

  51. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

if we want a slot WR that is a good route runner, there will be lots of options in early 5th rd.

  52. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — we’ll see who ends up where. But when Tua is in there the blindside will still be the blindside. And whatever reasons Jackson and Hunt ended up where they did in college will be on the other side.

Plus I’m really like’n the thought of running it on 3rd and one btwn Hunt and Kindley. Where’s the meat?…. it’s right there. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They are the 18 and 39th pick
The difference between the two is probably nominal
The difference in this draft between 15-50 is just a matter of preference between teams

We drafted two OTs high – AS EXPECTED – and it doesn’t matter how many times Rock insists being a lefty matters – it doesn’t!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m with Rock on being a lefty matters, but in the long-term I like it. D’s are designed to face a righty. Might not be a huge difference for them, but is something extra they will have to game plan for and react to.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Jordan Howard has already ordered Rolex watches for those guys. 🙂

  53. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Go ahead and take Gandy-Golden
    I like the kid

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pick #136 has been traded 3 times! GB>MIA>HOU>LA Rams

  55. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m just busting your chops Rock on the left handed bs

    I just hate that criticism

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steelers may take him, they always get good WR’s

  57. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Bukkake at the 136!

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Splain it Pigs!

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock and Jersey Jeff are in the same boat on Tua, they both hate it and are all grumbly about it.

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My surprises who are still there:
    RB ENO Benjamin
    QB Jake Fromm
    WR Tyler Johnson
    OT Prince Tega Wonogho

  61. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

WR Lipscomb from Vandy in 5th ?? oops, Lynch gone.

  62. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Bills having a good draft also! 😦

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We are 16 picks away from having two picks in a row
It wouldn’t take much to trade up now would it?

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We put ourselves in a bad position having such a need to fix that O-line. We had to load up on all the big uglies now that we finally got a QB

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I love it though

I love when nfl teams use the draft to build one particular thing

A couple of years from now we may look back at this draft and say it’s when we made a dominant OL

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Actually we weren’t in a very good position at any position!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And some big uglies there are. Can guarantee they aren’t thinking about switching to a zone blocking scheme. Gonna be some man schemes out side on D and gonna be some power blocking on O.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope Eno makes it to RD 5. I’d like us to take him. He should go the next pick though since I said just said that.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – Nah man, I’d say OL was by far the biggest glaring weakness after FA.

  67. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems strange to have 6 potential starting db’s. But Bobby McCain is a potential cut next year….. I’d be real worried if I was him.

  68. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we hit on these picks
And next year we have a good QB, OL and secondary

We can use our picks next you to get a stud Pass rusher, WR and RB

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Building the trenches.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Edge still there:
    Curtis Weaver
    Khalid Kareem
    Bradlee Anae
    Kenney Willekes
    Bryce Huff
    Carter Coughlin
    Jonathan Garvin
    Derrel Tuszka

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Gandy-Golden gone! 😦

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    153 154 173

Good player, surprise Probowl player, solid player for years

  73. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

KJ Hill Ohio St. is another WR it seems we can get in 5th if we want him.

  74. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Since I don’t have anything to say about players, I’ll say this about the virtual draft. I really like seeing what eveyone’s homes/man caves/home offices/draft set up looks like.

    Just me?

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know we don’t need another DB but is CB Bryce Hall still on the board? That would be another surprise for me.

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Dawn Aponte calling the pick

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Driscoll before Wanogho

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well – I would take him at this stage. I don’t care if we don’t need more OL. Same with Biadasz

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – No offense, if they take another DB before a RB, I may lose my shit. lol

  79. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Cowboys just took Biadasz

  80. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Cowboys traded up to 145 for Biadasz

  81. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

only 4 more picks before us…

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

U75s spewing more stupid BS, 65% of rosters made up of players selected after 4th rd. That doesn’t mean these guys are any good, it just means they need lower contracts to get in under the cap.

  83. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Man, it is going pretty fast. we are only 3 picks away

  84. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    I don’t think we take RB with either 153 or 154 … maybe 173

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Herd, I actually like the way they’re doing the draft due to the virus more than the big production. It’s more human.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

At my job, since we’re all working from home now, we have these conference calls, zoom meetings, we don’t do video, thank goodness, but we do have a site where we have all posted our home office set ups. Kind of cool to see everyone’s tastes etc.

  86. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Nick Harris and Eno????

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This is a good start. They tore it down and are building from the foundation you gotta have…the trenches. We still need to wait another couple years to really know if they are gonna be successful, but I like the philosophy and game plan.

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s funny. Did someone forfit a pick? I’ve seen it a couple of places. We have the 7th and 9th pick in the 5th round. #153 & 154

  89. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Did you guys catch the evil genius’ dog? Cute as anything miniature husky or something, but just sat there motionless. Bill looked over, gave an approving nod and gave him a treat on the way out his office door. Trained as robotic as his players.

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Here we go
    2 in a row – during a freakin commercial

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

ON THE CLOCK AND AND WILL BE AGAIN

I thought this might be a dilemma for the network, how can you run so many commercials in a row? I guess it didn’t phase them…

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    We traded the pick…lol

  93. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    We traded

  94. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:
