Secondary to none

Xavien Howard at Left Cornerback, Byron Jones at Right Cornerback. Bobby McCain at Free Safety and Eric Rowe at Strong Safety. I believe this is our best secondary in a long time. Both Howard and Jones can be lockdown corners. Howard has the INT’s but Jones is regarded as one of the top cover corners in the NFL and shuts down the receivers he’s on. A healthy Bobby McCain this season will be better than he was last year struggling with a shoulder injury. Eric Rowe who has played a lot of different positions much like McCain, really seemed to find himself at Strong Safety. I thought he played his best ball there and his elite athleticism is a big plus at safety.

We drafted another CB who will likely be our slot and nickel corner in RD1 pick #30, Noah Igbinoghene (Iggy Mahogany). Those 5 guys in addition to up and comers like Nik Needham, Stevie Parker, Ken Webster and Ryan Lewis makes our depth legitimate. At safety we have 3 young vets who provide nice depth in Clay Fejedelem, Adrian Colbert and Kavon Frazier and a very promising rookie who may end up rising to the top of the depth chart before long in Brandon Jones. Add in a CB who at one time seemed like a potential starter in Cordrea Tankersley. Tank started 11 games in 2017 replacing Byron Maxwell who we picked up from Philly. Tank definitely showed promise in 2017 but suffered a season ending ACL injury in 2018. He was placed on the PUP in 2019 while recovering but couldn’t make it back last year. This is Tank’s final year on his contract so I expect he will be looking to crack the lineup to get himself another contract next year either here or elsewhere.

Having two shutdown corners should make a huge difference for our defense. We all know we’ve struggled to get to the QB the last few years but the additions we made this offseason in both free agency (Kyle Van Noy, ShaqLawson, Emmanuel Ogbah) as well as in the draft (Raekwon Davis, Curtis Weaver, Jason Strowbridge) will give us a lot more juice in the pass rush department. Pairing that potentially dominant secondary with an upgraded pass rush could yield excellent results from our defense. I don’t about all of you people here, I’m really looking forward to seeing this defense grow this year!

GO DOLPHINS!!

Per Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins are trading a conditional sixth-round draft pick in exchange for tight end and former second-round draft pick Adam Shaheen. Shaheen was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 45th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and was the highest draft pick ever selected from Ashland University.

Since entering the league, Shaheen has been a relative bust considering his draft status, though when on the field, he’s flashed with potential here and there. The biggest problem is that Shaheen has trouble actually staying on the field. The hulking tight end missed three games in his rookie season and went on to only play in 16 of 32 games over the past two years.

In the 2017 NFL season, Shaheen played in 13 games and started seven. He brought in 12 receptions on 14 targets for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Over the course of occasional appearances during the past two seasons, Shaheen added 14 receptions on 19 targets for 122 yards and one score.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we got his services for the time he was here and we may have dropped 8 spots from where we drafted him. the bottom line he didn’t fit Flores scheme, it wasn’t an out of the ball park trade for miami but i think grier did good considering.

  34. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Jets won big time in that exchange but they lost talent this next year and should have a top 5 pick for 2021. I doubt Gase survives but Douglas may get them some good picks for the next guy. If not, Gase will bring down another Jets GM two years from now.

I’m hearing from a few people of an interesting scenario of the Jets trying to get tools for Lawrence. if available. I don’t believe it but I’d love if they switched QBs every 3 years. Ilike Lawrence too much to see him in gag green but it’s a fun scenario either way.

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s not that we didn’t get enough for Minkah
It’s that the Seahawks just paid too much for Adams
Two first rounders, a 3rd and a player is too much

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Adams may be the best safety in the NFL. He’s definitely top 3. MInkah when we traded him was nowhere near that, certainly not by his play for the Dolphins.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah I would say pound for pound Adams is significantly better

But it’s not always easy to evaluate that with your players like Minkah

Regardless, I’m not giving up two first round picks for a safety

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The 3rd was offset by a 4th Seattle gets back, but yeah way too much comp for a guy you’re going to have to pay big time in 2 years. He’s also a cancer.

From Game Pass I remember Adam’s blowing a coverage, leaving Preston wide open for an easy TD.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He wants to be the highest paid safety in the nfl

He probably deserves to be – but if Seattle isn’t ready to do that, don’t give up 1st rounders for him

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Seattle defense has consistently thrived with having good safety play. They had Earl Thomas for years as well as Kam Chancellor. This allows them to get right back to that

No preseason games…… doesn’t that mean should be lots more cuts? The maximum you can have on the rosters is just that…… the maximum. And now they don’t to play a bunch of games while the starters (or even the back-ups) are on the bench.

When it comes time for live action in practice who much is looking for that diamond in the rough worth versus just getting the team ready to play?

    —————-
    Piggy,

Exactly right. If you give that much up to acquire a player and lose him a year or two later, you made a very bad deal. (I think it’s a bad deal anyway, but that would be infinitely worse.) So now Adams now has the same leverage Tunsil had after his trade.

I’m betting Seattle isn’t as stupid as O’Brien though. They probably already have the parameters of a contract worked out and we’ll see a new deal inked shortly giving Adams what he wants.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A Tunsil trade is exactly what it is. On both those trades though I’m like why not just wait till he’s a FA. You’ll either be paying him the same money then or not if someone goes bigger.

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Right on Bookman!

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think the Safety position is worth that kind of compensation. They simply don’t impact the game enough. Adams is a good player but he’s not all that. But like I said yesterday I think Seattle is going all in to win now.

  45. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe Lou went to Magic City with his grandpa.

“Los Angeles Clippers star Lou Williams will be required to complete a 10-day quarantine upon arrival back in the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida, the league announced Sunday. Williams left the site on an excused absence after his grandfather died, but was photographed at Magic City, a strip club in Atlanta. He said he was picking up food.”

  46. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I thought Gaileys offense didn’t use TEs, could Smythe be gone? a weird trade late in the off season

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gailey really doesn’t have a particular offense. He’s adaptable and that’s what Flores wants. I think we want to be run heavy – screens to the backs and then strike down the field.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think it’s also about competition at that 2nd spot. We have a lot of room to improve there, so even if this is just a minor improvement, we’re still getting better and if we keep both, adding depth.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. This team is still hunting for talent. A former 2017 2nd rd pick for a 2021 conditional 7th is a no brainer.

  47. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

After just 3 games in the MLB (and only 2 for the Braves and Mets), every team in the league has at least one loss and one win.

  48. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ok, even better than the conditional 6th they said it was yesterday. He can play, he’s just been injured for almost half his 3 year career.

Good trade, we were thin at TE, and don’t care about 7th rounders.

I just assumed the rumor that Chan doesn’t use his TEs much was true and why we didn’t upgrade it this offseason.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s early in the process with our TEs. Gesicki is the guy who has to build on the second half of last season. The other guys need to earn their roles. We did add Michael Roberts as well. But we’re also in a weird offseason as we know so who knows how long it will take to figure these guys out as well as other positions.

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

After watching recent videos from the Greise years, he was not the game manager I remembered him to be. He had as much to do with us winning those 2 SBs as anyone else.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He made big throws when needed even if he didn’t throw often. Those Dolphins teams were great “teams”. They won in all types of ways. That’s what I think Flores is trying to do here. Be able to win games based on opponent, not doing the same thing for every team each week.

It would appear so, but who the hell knows? I hear 95% of the population is ammune to it, so would we be better off to just expose the team now and be done with it, and have the entire team quarantined from the outside? Before quarantine can be complete retest all and anyone still positive would be isolated. This could’ve been done a long time ago.

  54. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – I have a friend who was so against MLB starting the season. Now he’s doing a doom and gloom cha-cha because he thinks this will end the season. I’m starting to hate this guy because he’s over the top far left. He invited my wife and I to his Halloween party, he makes a big thing out of Halloween, goes all out. Somehow in conversation it came out that I voted for Trump and he flipped his shit. He was like “How could you????” “Why??????”. Then the other day he put up a post on FB about the Yankees and Nationals holding the black cloth for BLM and how happy he was about the show of unity. I said to him “you’re happy with the show of unity, but that doesn’t happen if they’re not playing”.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, there isn’t a lot of rationale in conversations like that. About half the people I know, I just can’t talk to because they are too closed minded about this stuff. My wife’s parents are so pro-Trump we can’t discuss anything because all conversations inevitably lead to either Trump or how minorities are ruining the country.

And to be honest, even with my wife, who is devastatingly intelligent, and whom I love dearly, I can’t get her to admit a single one of Trump’s policies or any single thing he’s done is a positive thing (usually when I try it’s his stance on China which is one of the few things he’s done I agree with). For her, it’s always, “if he did something positive for the country, it was incidental, because ultimately everything he does is for himself”. Even if I agree with that sentiment, can’t we at least agree that the stance is right?

But we don’t need to look any further than this board. Try to get some of the people on here to admit ANYTHING any liberal or democrat does is right or moral. Some of the conspiracy theories that get tossed out here, how do you talk with that and try to find middle ground? i don’t know the answer.

There are few people in the middle on any of this stuff, and it’s nearly impossible to find anyone who can talk about it rationally.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Old saying is never discuss politics or religion in social situations. Can’t stick by that 100% but it’s an old saying for a reason. I mean does anyone think they are actually going to change minds? If you can’t why bother?

      • D's avatar D says:

Shouldn’t be attempting to change minds, minds are changed by the person who owns that mind. Your discussion should be to offer a different viewpoint for them to digest as they see fit or even refuse. Arguments are never truly won, could be settled by a non-biased 3rd party if you can find one, but otherwise its just posing food for thought and letting a persons reason do the rest.

  58. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And you want to talk crazy. We’ve had protesters in Sacramento chaining themselves up outside of the Governors mansion in a protest to free prisoners because of COVID.

Their chant is “Free them all”.

Are you f%^&ing kidding me? Free all the prisoners? Huh?

    • D's avatar D says:

I heard that back in April over in the New Orleans area, same deal, COVID outbreak in the prison and they were wanting all prisoners freed. Ime like umm, so freed instead of just fucking moved to a different facility or quarantined, releasing infected criminals back into the public sounds like a much better solution lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Can’t expect chants to always make literal sense. I’m sure most protestors don’t want to literally have no money go to police or last election Trump rally folks have Hillary locked up.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bad analogy. Locking up Hillary makes perfect literal sense. She broke the law and should go to prison for her email mess. I wont even get into her quid pro quo or Clinto Cash.

But I agree we shouldn’t talk politics.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve — didn’t think Hillary would get locked up even if convicted on the server stuff given way such things work out in the legal system. But as is she was never even charged by Trump’s DOJ and he’s the one who said would lock her up. So guess we’ll never know.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The point was it does make literal sense, not if she should be locked up.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Fair enough steve — they literally might want it but it practically cannot happen. Just like am sure those Trump rally folks literally wanted Mexico to pay for the wall. My only point was chants don’t always match up to the real world.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nobody thought Mexico was literaly going to pay for the wall. It was always meant to be an indirect method, which happened in the USMCA trade deal.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

There you go steve — the folks chanting the chant did not take it literally. Full circle to where I started.

But the strip club is using really large plants, as their border so that people can’t see what is going on from the outside or the street

But on the entrenacd you can see right in
And it appears to be just people dining surrounded by really curvy women in spandex

It’s kind of a makeshift hooters atmosphere

I don’t know if the food is any good
I don’t really see the point when there are other very good restaurants in the neighborhood

I just thought it was funny

Strip cubs have to survive too I guess

  62. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess we just have a different quality of club out here.

Fun fact for anyone traveling in NorCal, if you’re looking for decent food, don’t go to a strip club, lol.

Kong – I hear ya on your earlier post. I admit myself to being pretty pig headed on certain things and I also admit that when I speak of the far left I’m thinking in my head that they are ALL a bunch of fucktards when it’s probably only 99% of them. 😉

    • D's avatar D says:

I think thats best for everyone, he fits their system and without Brieda they really needed him not to set their offense back.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, once they traded Breida, his leverage increased, both sides were smart about it and they got the deal done.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Some interesting tidbits from the article:

-If a player tests positive and is showing symptoms, at least 10 days must pass since the symptoms first occurred and at least 72 hours must have passed since symptoms last occurred. This likely means that such a player will miss at least two games.

-If a player tests positive but is not showing symptoms, he can return either 10 days after the positive test or in just five days, if the player tests negative twice.

“Last week, the NFLPA announced that 59 players had tested positive for the coronavirus at some point during the pandemic, and league and team officials reportedly are expecting many more positive tests as players arrive for training camp. Players must have two negative tests over a 72-hour time frame to be allowed into team facilities, after which they will be tested daily for at least two weeks.”

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If someone tests positive and then tests negative in less than 5 days twice, one or more of those tests are WRONG! I still can’t believe that both my wife and I tested negative when we’re both experiencing typical COVID symptoms for over a week. I really don’t want to go to the Instacare place again to retest because I don’t want to get anyone else sick and even if I test positive, which I should, I’m still going to feel the same physically regardless.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That was my first thought too, as you and I have both talked about this week, those tests can be wrong.

There is your story and also my coworker’s nephew story. Multiple tests administered by hospital staff after he was admitted came back as false negatives, and only after they took water directly from his lungs did they get the positive.

Maybe the NFL gets the super secret, nananana poopoo, ours are better than yours tests, lol.

  71. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Damn — and we have 2 boxes of surgical gloves.
    ——————————————
The CDC and the European CDC have both released guidelines stating that glove use isn’t a necessary preventive tactic when it comes to COVID-19. CDC guidelines say gloves “will not necessarily protect you from getting COVID-19 and may still lead to the spread of germs.”
Gloves can trick the wearer into complacency, said Allison Bartlett, associate medical director of the Infection Control Program Pediatric at the University of Chicago. She said gloves are not a substitute for good hand hygiene.

“I think that disposable surgical gloves don’t really have a place in coronavirus (protection). People get the false sense of security that their hands are clean and protected when that’s not the case at all.”

In preventing the spread of COVID-19, it’s important to focus on what works. “It’s all that we can do to redirect people’s energy, anxiety and wanting to keep themselves and others safe to the activities we know are really impactful — like staying home, wearing a mask when you’re out in public, washing your hands and keeping frequently touched surfaces clean.“

    • D's avatar D says:

The virus can remain on the surface of the gloves. So while it protects your hands from being in contact with the virus, it wont protect you from transferring the virus to other surfaces and you have to be careful how you take them off not to transfer it from the glove to your hand, defeating the purpose. So helpful, sure, but you still have to be careful not to touch your face, etc.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gloves help when you’re touching shopping carts etc., how could it not? Nothing is getting on your hands. It’s not difficult to take them off properly. Then wash your hands anyway.

I had a nurse from Baptist Hospital come in to bond her brother out yesterday. I wore a mask but she didn’t. She asked me if I wanted her to wear one but told her if she didn’t want to that it was fine. I asked her about the # of COVID patients as that is her main job right now is caring for COVID patients. She said they are not overwhelmed like the local news likes to report. Said the only worry she has about catching it is missing work but has no worries if she does catch it. She also told me the number of positive results is overblown. She is not certain if it is everywhere, but says they test inpatients numerous times while they are in the hospital but each positive result is reported or counted as a new positive test/case. She said one patient was tested 8 times (all positive) while in the hospital and each one was counted in the numbers as a new positive case by the lab. Says it is the same with testing sites. People will test positive and quarantine at home then a few days later have no symptoms get tested again but it comes back positive again. Even though it is the same person, it is counted in the numbers as another new positive case.

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Tim,

I usually just wear 16 or 17 layers of gloves, and take them off one at a time when I go from place to place.

It also has the bonus effect of being extremely intimidating. Nobody wants to mess with a guy who looks like this –

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The $200 per week, then in 10/20 a move to 70% wage insurance the GOP proposed is so much better than the current $600 weekly amount. It’s enough to allow people to survive and is similar to disability insurance. It also will create incentive to get back to work rather than remove the incentive by paying some people more than a working wage.

I haven’t had time to look at other details, just saw that blurb and think that particular detail is a step in the right direction.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s no question that there are too many people who are making more on unemployment than their real jobs and therefore have zero incentive to go back to work. That’s a huge issue.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Unemployment is not forever.

The issue we have in this country is the same battle Ronald Reagan talked about before he became governor of California. Many of the founding fathers had the same concerns. It’s a battle of individual freedom vs. a larger central government. Individualism vs. collectivism.

Once we allow an elite body of government to control our lives as subjects as opposed to free individuals, we’re done as a free nation and that will permeate throughout the world.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim, that’s what I’ve been saying for a long time, individual freedom vs big govt. First they take away your freedom of speech, then your guns, and before you know it our way of life.

Does anyone really want socialism or globalism here? Sometimes I wonder. Why do they go after our kids? Low hanging fruit.

Don’t ask what the govt can do for you, ask what you can do for your govt. JFK

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

Yep, the $600 a week is equivalent to a $15/hr full time job. That is on top of whatever they are getting from unemployment itself. If those people were smart, they will have used the extra money they are getting to try and get ahead. Of course if they were smart, they would probably be making more than that to begin with, lol.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

My father said he saw somewhere the average money made is $950 weekly. That’s a $49,400 a year job. The average American worker made $48,251.27 in 2018. It’s absolutely unbelievable when you add the other extra benefits they have. These people are making, with the benefits included, more than highly trained nurses and sitting at home doing nothing.

Or, in the case of teachers, they are crying that it’s unfair they’d have to be at risk like the rest of us. while being off since March. It must be fucking nice.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That wouldn’t bother me much, I would expect that to be the case because of the lack of practice and preseason games. I’ll definitely take that over nothing. You?

“According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, players will have seven days from the time the agreement is officially signed to decide whether to opt out for the season. Players considered high risk for COVID-19 can earn $350,000 and an accrued NFL season if they choose to opt out of the season. Players without risk can earn $150,000 for opting out.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

an accrued NFL season? Is that just in regard to years in the league, vet minimums, and league benefits, or are they talking about a year on their existing contract?

    • D's avatar D says:

Stephen Guidry, WR, Dallas Cowboys, who signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent earlier this year, will be placed on the reserve/voluntary opt-out list. Unlike veteran Maurice Canady, who opted out Monday, he will not receive the $150,00 payout. He will get to keep his $10,000 signing bonus and the Cowboys will continue to hold his rights.

    • D's avatar D says:

Think of it this way. We beat them and then its because they had so many opt out. I mean playing teams riddled by opt outs wont feel very good beating them. Yay we throttled the Chiefs who were playing an entire reserve offense. I dont know how gratifying that can be. So like i said, if we have football, i dont think its going to be the same game this year.

And no talk of 14 players from Marlins testing positive and being in quarantine in Philadelphia. Fake news! Maybe we need a recount or they counted 7 and doubled it.
