Week 5 – Dolphins @ 49ers

I know, it’s Week 5 and already the QB controversy has begun. I believe there is a legitimate reason for there to be one. I don’t want to knock the Dolphins front office or any of the coaching staff but if Brian Flores is speaking true of Tua Tagovailoa, that he isn’t quite ready yet, the question is WHY? Health is not an issue, because Tua has been the gameday #2 QB which means if anything happened to Ryan Fitzpatrick Tua would be in the game. So let’s put health aside, and think back to before the Tua injury at Alabama, he was the top QB prospect, although Joe Burrow with his great Senior year was a close 2nd. So how is it that Joe Burrow started from day one? Justin Herbert taken one pick after Tua has now started 3 weeks due to the unfortunate medical circumstances with QB Tyrod Taylor. Undrafted Brett Rypien has started an NFL game due to injuries to Drew Lock and Jeff Driskel, and although it was against the NY Jets he still looked like he belonged completing 67% of his passes and a team high 7.4YPA. Yes, he threw 4 INT’s, but he was undrafted after all. So again I ask, why is Tua not ready?

I like and admire Ryan Fitzpatrick and our 1-3 record is certainly not all on him. If you watched the last game. We dominated TOP and had the ball more than 6 minutes more than the Seahawks. We ran 67 plays, 45 were Ryan Fitzpatrick pass attempts and another 6 were Ryan Fitzpatrick rushes. 51 of the 67 plays were Ryan Fitzpatrick. Isn’t that too much to come away with only TD? The one TD was a Ryan Fitzpatrick scramble. Listen, Fitz is playing his heart out, he’s doing whatever he can to win games but we’re not winning and I think it’s high time for them to spend more time doing whatever they have to do to get young Tua Tagovailoa ready to play.

This week we travel to SFO to play Darlene’s beloved 49ers. Talk about a team absolutely decimated by injuries, it’s unbelievable and they keep coming. The 49ers have quite the IR list, starting with DE’s Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas, CB Richard Sherman, WR’s Deebo Samuel, Tavon Austin, Jalen Hurd, RB Tevin Coleman, TE George Kittle was out 3 weeks and now QB Jimmy Garoppolo, DE Dee Ford, and RB Raheem Mostert are out with injuries. All I can say is it’s a good time to play the Niners. Kyle Shanahan has done a fine job at keeping this team competitive despite the volume of injuries as they are 2-2. QB Nick Mullins can play and this is by no means a gimme. George Kittle is back mostly healthy and was a monster last week and I would expect him to have another huge day against our defense.

It may not seem as if our defense has improved all that much but we do have 9 sacks through 4 weeks, I’m not sure we had 9 sacks all season last year. OK, that’s a joke. We had 23 sacks last season and right now we’re on pace for 36. You have to start somewhere. In our secondary, rookie Noah Igbinoghene has been targeted often and with much success. It was intended that Iggy play mostly in the slot with Byron Jones playing the boundary but Jones has been injured and unavailable, pressing Igbinoghene into a tough assignment. He’s a good player, and he will improve wherever he plays, count on it! I don’t know of Byron Jones status for week 5 but my guess is Iggy will be starting outside opposite X. Deebo Samuel is back after playing last week against Philly and Brandon Aiyuk, a very promising rookie will likely be the guy Iggy will be covering, so not an easy out.

One thing I take as a positive is that there was formal announcement regarding the status of the starting QB position with our team, so at least there is consideration or at a minimum awareness that a change may be necessary. As I stated earlier, besides getting the team ready to play the 49ers, they had better be dedicating as much time is necessary to make sure #1 is ready to play, I mean after all he’s the gameday #2, it’s kind of expected, no? Maybe Tua should be getting more practice reps, I doubt Fitz needs them at this point of his career, he can do it in his sleep. I hope they do everything in their power to make sure Tua IS ready, I think it’s just about that time!

Other than the refs calling 3 questionable penalties on one drive, gifting the Niners a TD, and Jakeem Grant being a huge bag of suck, it was a near perfect game.

  2. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s insane that almost a 3rd of our schedule – 4 games and the bye week – were completely upended because of other teams’ BS.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Congrats Phins!!!!! Great win! Flores and Co. out-coached Kyle Shanahan and Co. all day. The young Phins came to play. 😉

  4. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Our running game was MIA in the 1st half, but towards the end of the 3rd and into the 4th we actually ran the ball pretty well when we were closing out the game. That was encouraging.

I can’t wait to see how we look next week against a garbage Jest team. It would be nice to see us follow up a big win with another dominating performance against a bottom dweller.

Such a fun win today. So glad I get tomorrow off, so I can keep drinking and reveling in the win. 🙂

Two weeks in a row I come away feeling encouraged. It struck me most how strange it was to have that feeling. Great win on the road….with a shuffled OL no less! Good stuff. Keep working. Keep building.

PIGGY; Does that mean that both the fired head coach and GM of the Falcons are now being considered by the JETS?? Perhaps the fired Atlanta GM could step in for owner Woody Johnson at the owners meetings so Woody, our ambassador to Scotland, could be free to spend more time trying to persuade the Scots to move the British Open to one of the golf courses over there owned by Donald Trump??

I don’t think it surprises anyone any longer that he has these type of games, his problem has always been, when the going gets tough he tries to do too much and forced the ball, then the ints start happening.

I noticed yesterday he took a sack near the goal line, instead if forcing the ball. Don’t remember ever seeing that from him before.

    ———————————————————————————————-
Denver game, last i heard was pushed back to week 11, or bye week, and next week will instead be our bye. Im not sure about the Bills, i saw they were scheduled for a Tuesday game, but the Thursday i think got moves back to a later rdate. Lots of shuffling around.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hated the jets back to back games from the start, and thought the earlier bye would help get Tua on the field, then Fitzmagic strikes again.

  20. D's avatar D says:

The league should rule on that Grugier-Hill hit. Refs needs to be held accountable for shit like that too, and that gave them a TD, a few pretty bad calls int he game most went against us.

  21. D's avatar D says:

I do have to say, us playing Denver in Denver a month later makes that game harder on us than it was before. Denver in October, pretty colors, crisp weather, November is shrunken balls and frostbit nipples.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I was thinking harder, because they may have a better QB playing, better than the 3rd string version that’s playing now.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Also, for some reason, maybe the dry air, but games we’ve played late in the season in Denver haven’t really affected us in the past. I’m Ok with the schedule change.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m Ok with it for now, it still may change again.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We should be able to beat the jets next week to get to 3-3, week 7 though is looking tougher and tougher😉 but I don’t see a game we can’t win until we play the Chiefs week 14. We’re not going to win all of those, but its the easier part of the schedule, before the tough last 4.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Fitz did a great job of exploiting the PS CB yesterday, something I haven’t heard in forever for our team, usually we hear it being done to us.

After giving Flores shit all week I want to give him his due, he had em ready to go.

In years I felt we were talent depleted and still won some games like this I felt like it was a one off and everything had to align perfectly. I didn’t feel that way yesterday. Sure the 49ers were depleted, but they’ve still got a good team.

Van Ginkel and Ogbah are studs. Yesterday should’ve been game 1, the previous 4 the PS.

To me its not about failure, but recovery from failure, so positve steps as far as changing that. We are still very much learning to play in the system, despite some of them havign familiarity, and we still have a lot of new guys playing so the maturation process is still ongoing. I expect ups and down, but to see the same failures made previously not being revisited is encouraging.

    RIP Joe Morgan.

A heart felt RIP Joe. I hated the Reds in the 70s, but always thought he was a great player and best 2nd baseman with a clutch bat.

Only disappointment yesterday was Houston Texans winning 😦 I’m cheering against them as much as I am cheering for the Fins.

I want them to finish in bottom four … Fins can win, win, win, and still have a top 4 or 5 pick!! Oh, and we get their 2nd round pick as well (total of 3 picks in top 36 or 37).

Ideally, a top 4 pick with Lawrence and Fields both going there it leaves Sewell or Chase … both of whom are considered among highest rated at their position in a decade. Then use our natural pick for defense (edge, DL). If Houston continues to falter, 2021 could be the draft that solidifies Miami’s long term future.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Either of these 2 would make me happy!

Gregory Rousseau, EDGE, Miami (6-6, 260 pounds)

Rousseau has opted out of the ACC season to focus on working out for the NFL. It’s just about raising his ceiling there as his floor or production immediately was high for the Hurricanes. He has great burst to the QB and finishes them off well, too.

      Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU (6-1, 200 pounds)

Chase made a ton of big plays with Joe Burrow outside and now will get to expand his receiving and route-running repertoire with more slot work in 2020.

      Hard to defend that

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s the belicheat way, you don’t have that one can, that can be doubled, that demands a large contract. You’re better off with some pretty good scheme players, that you create scheme sacks for.

WR too. Need a speedy guy to keep the defense honest. We have the 2 big guys in Parker and Williams, need the speed guy that can take it to the house. Ford is good but he’s a Davone Bess type receiver.

  44. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This one has actually happened to me

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We actually looked like a legit NFL team yesterday. I know we can revert back to the other team, and to be honest, I felt like if the Niners ran the ball 60 times they probably would have won because we didn’t even slow down their running game. Our pressure + Jimmy G throwing lame ducks all over the field is what made the biggest difference.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure what is up with Jimmy G, but we played a team without a legit starting QB (either of them). But you play teams like that sometimes and our D looked awesome.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He wasn’t the Jimmy G I’ve seen play in the past. He just couldn’t get anything on his throws so it’s safe to assume he was hurt in some fashion that was affecting his ability to make the throws he usually makes. Still, we hounded the F out of him, so props to the defense.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Didn’t you guys know he was out the past 2 1/2 games with an ankle injury, and was a game time decusion for this game?

Yes, props to our D. You can only defend the players on the field.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wilson signed a 3 year contract in 2018, so 2020 would have been year 3

If you opt out does it extend the contract to the following year?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hurns and Wilson are nice options, but should be say #4 and #5 wideouts on a depth chart. They come back and means we don’t need more though, even if would love that pure slot guy. But slot guys can come lower in the draft.

  48. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lots of biatching going on in the Bay Area😏 from current and former players, they don’t know what just hit them.

Anyone notice they took Parker out, after it got out of control?

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Chase and Waddle might end up being the top two receivers next season
But both LSU and Alabama have another WR that may go early enough Devotnae Smith and Terrace Marshall both look pretty good

Also keep you eye out for the return of Justyn Ross from Clemson who is recovering from neck surgery – Clemson has been putting very good WRs in the nfl lately. I think Ross might be in the same class as some of his predecessors at Clemson

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sanders set a Fins record of 14 FGs to start a season.

Both Sanders and Haack went unopposed during camp. How did Flores know they’d both be outstanding this year? Because he drafted a legacy long snapper🤔

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Byron Jones back in the lineup, rookie first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene played a season-low 10 snaps after getting more than 60 snaps each of the previous two weeks.

On the fake punt, when the unit was coming on the field a couple of the players were making an X symbol with their arms and saying something. At the time I took it to mean something was coming. Was this a tell? Why didn’t the 49ers pick up on it?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure why Iggy wasn’t playing slot CB. That was the plan at least. Maybe he hasn’t been getting reps there cause Jones has been out.

The best/fastest YAC receivers next draft IMO are Jalen Waddle, Alabama and Rondale Moore, Purdue. Both will be 1st rounds picks. Two others that could be had later are Anthony Schwartz, Auburn who is the fastest player in college football and another decent yac guy who I believe is sub 4.4 is Dazz Newsome, UNC.

Two others who will be 1st rounders (not sure how fast they are) Jamar Chase, LSU and Devonte Smith, Alabama. Both of them I am sure are not sub 4.4 but very good receivers.

I have not looked more into it than that but will later in the year.

RB Travis Etienne, Clemson is the fastest RB in college and will also be a 1st rounder.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Howard must be real happy Jones is back. Means more balls his way. And he is good at picks.

I just put out what Gesicki said about him. Fitz knows Tua is coming in, Flores knows Tua is coming in. You and I know Tua is coming in. Sure would be nice to keep the bearded one around as a #2 after that though.

  69. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I also think Fitz is a better QB than Tua at this point in their careers and agree with him starting over the “future”

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rock, not every move a GM makes pans out. It’s about a handful of moves but the overall body of work and we’re not there yet. Even with the 2nd rd pick for Rosen in 2019 we still had two 2nd rd picks this year and will have two again in 2021. There’s nothing wrong with taking a chance on young QBs. We already have the next young QB on the team. You just move on.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I guess, but was never a fan of Rosen so always thought it was flyer. With that much draft capital, you can afford it? OK, but not really.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well now that Rosen didn’t pan out it it’s easy to criticize but it’s not like we had some big draft void because of the trade. There’s no going back so you move on. We have the young QB in Tua and that’s all we heard about during the 2019 season was “Tank for Tua”. Well we got him anyway without the #1 pick. We have a good situation right now.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I didn’t think I was being critical of Rosen, just was never a fan of giving up draft capital for him. Please don’t put words in my mouth. I didn’t think it was worth it. Period.

  71. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Yep…and out record wouldn’t be any better, imo. Probably worse, again imo.

Old school, but still believe you can get better as a rookie NFL QB holding a clipboard and learning for when it’s your time, ala Brady.

Learning to win and developing a winning culture is first and foremost, for me as an arm chair GM and HC.

  72. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Guess who’s #32 on the all-time passing yardage list?!!

    HEY DRAMA MAMA!! WHAT’S HAPNEN!?

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Festivus isn’t for a couple of months man. Hold your grievances until then.

  76. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Being we’re loaded in the 2021 Draft, look to draft a STELLAR pass-rusher, a franchise RT (Tua’s blindside), a killer RB, and a stud LB.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      We are good at RT
      Pass rusher, WR LB!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hunt might be that RT of the future.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

“Might be”, could be. That would be great. But what if we could draft an ELITE (Right) Tackle in the 1st Round of the 2021 Draft? That would be very difficult to pass on, no?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t have the answer on that. It all depends on who’s available when we draft. Don’t see a whole lot of elite tackles coming out these days. It seems they all need some time to develop. So my hope is Hunt is learning and developing this year and maybe he makes a jump in his 2nd season when it’s Tua time. That would be ideal. Jackson already looks solid on the left side though he’s dealing with that foot injury right now.

  77. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Adam Gase is not going to survive this season. If he’s fired mid-season (I HOPE!), they might actually win some games (see Romeo in Houston yesterday).

We want the stej to win a few, we want the Texans to LOSE out, and we Phins will do whatever we want to do!
    GO PHINS!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

Are you officially a Phish now?

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

When a QB goes through what Rosen, Tannehill, Pat White, Beck, etc., it’s rare, imo, they ever reach their full potential. They’re fucked mostly, imo.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Do you think Murray will turn out in AZ? I have serious doubts.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill is doing fine. Pat White was never supposed to be an every down QB. Beck was overwhelmed at the next level. Rosen has the physical tools but seems to be missing something.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO, but I think Rosen lacks confidence from above… as in, nobody (a franchise) will back him 100%. And the longer this goes on, the worse it will become for a young QB’s confidence.

IMO, Rosen could become a QB who many slept on, only to become a decent/great QB in the future.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s called DCS* (Derek Carr Syndrome), ‘patented’ by yours truly, a very long time ago. Try to keep up, Krishna.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Keep up? I was commenting about the Rosen choice and how QBs, with experience of no OL and NFL speed, was not an arm chair GM decision I would have made by giving up draft capital. You?

Tim Knight would have, it seems. Keep up?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m just a “PUSSY” to you, Krishna. You should probably just ignore my comments.

  80. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Wow what a play by Herbert

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Kinda why I’m not sold and never was sold on Tua starting from day one, no NFL speed experience, suspect OL (all new), and having Tua come of the gates with his fragility.

But, hey, when the opportunity presents itself, hope he is ready.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No rookie QB has NFL speed experience. But Tua played a lot of games against top notch college talent.

Though not great, our OL looks better today than it has in years.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Behind Alabama’s NFL-college OL. NO comparison, imo, but you can make that argument, if you care.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Krishna, I never pounded the table for Rosen or anything like that. All I did was react to why we did it. It didn’t set us back or anything.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t think it “set us back”, just would not have made that call. Why can’t that be ok?

I don’t do my homework, but curious what else we could have done with pick. It’s about decisions and not one I would have made. That’s all.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I pounded the table
      Made sense at the time

I hope Rosen gets a chance somewhere

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I didn’t think we gave up too much draft capital for Rosen. It didn’t pan out probably because of the full out blow it up mode we where in but I thought it was worth the try.

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Hey, Krishna

Last time I’d addressed you (until recently), was when I gave you my deepest condolences for the passing of your wife. I’m a very caring individual, and then you came back at me with vitriol.

What’s up with that, I ask? WHY is it that you HATE me? This is the second time I’m asking you this question, being you wouldn’t answer me the first time I’d asked.

You and I used to be friends! What happened?

Be awhile before I am officially full time, but I’ll be here enough that it won’t make much of a difference. Coming back to Florida is a homecoming. I’m 7th generation, got the pioneer family certificate to prove it thanks to my aunt.

There’s only one person in this world that I would want to confront with my “hatred” (probably intense anger) mf13ss, and that is not you.

I have explained to you many times my exceptions to your off-football rhetoric. It is distasteful to me. I have always expressed that distaste to you so I don’t get what you don’t understand.

If you want to call it political, call it political. I think I see in you more than political rhetoric based on my definition, much more.

Did you ever see Game of Thrones? I just finished it Sunday AM. I thought it was pretty awesome. You remind me of one of the characters. I think we all have our work to do, especially me.

I am being nice, mf13ss. Let it go.
