Week 6 – Jets @ Dolphins

Defense was the story last week as the Dolphins played their best game of 2020 with a total and complete dismantling of the San Francisco 49ers. QB Jimmy Garoppolo probably wished he waited one more week to come back, and I’d bet HC Kyle Shanahan wishes he didn’t put Jimmy G. in either because he clearly looked like he wasn’t ready to play. The Dolphins defense hounded Jimmy G. and his wobbly ankle yielded wobbly throws and he was unable to escape the rush which was heavy all day. 5 sacks total to boost the yearly total to 14 sacks. Don’t spit on that guys, that’s a legit improvement from last season where we managed a season’s total of 23. Our current pace for sacks put us at 45, which is unlikely, but either way puts us close to doubling last year’s output. The rush came from everywhere, inside with Elandon Roberts, Jerome Baker and Zach Sieler and outside with Van Ginkle and Ogbah. Add in 3 turnovers, 2 INT’s (Xavien Howard) and 1 fumble recovery (Christian Wilkins) and it was great day for the defense.

Now on to the offense which by the way, also came to play. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 350 yards with 3 TD’s and zero INT’s. The run game was merely a complement, Myles Gaskin rushed 16 times for 57 yards and 1 TD and they sprinkled in a little of Breida and a rush or two from Bowden and Grant. RB Jordan Howard was healthy scratch. Now there is talk of the possibility of the Dolphins signing former Steeler and Jets RB Le’Veon Bell. At the moment of this writing, Bell has narrowed it down to 3 teams, the Bills, Chiefs and Dolphins. Does adding Le’Veon Bell make us a playoff contender? I suppose it depends on how we use him. The 2 RB’s we acquired in the offseason are basically spectators to the Myles Gaskin show. Breida and Howard have 114 yards rushing combined on 35 caries while Gaskin has 64 carries and 249 yards rushing. Bell looked anything but a top tier back in NY this season and last night but i9njuries have hampered him. He has only 19 carries this season and really is quite far removed from the elite RB he was in Pittsburgh all the way back in 2017. Personally, I’d say he was more of a product of that offense, having a great run blocking O-line, also catching passes from Roethlisberger when plays broke down and having WR’s Antonio Brown (in his prime) along with Martavis Bryant . So many times Big Ben extended the play and found Bell for a hige gain because the field was cleared out by Brown and Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Is it possible he’s that same player? I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Dolphins will play a late game this week (4PM) due to COVID-19 rescheduling. The Jets come in to Miami at a low point of their season. They are 32nd in scoring at 15 PPG and 32nd in defense allowing 32.2 PPG. Just dreadful. Last week we beat a team not at their best, and we put our foot on their neck. We need to do the same this week. Yes, the Jets cut Le’Veon Bell but may be getting 2 receivers back, Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Denzel Mims (IR hamstring). Both WR’s would be a boost to an anemic Jets offense that has featured Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan, Braxton Berrios and TE Chris Herndon. Sam darnold has had a difficult season to say the least, the O-line pass protection has been leaky and he doesn’t really have a reliable receiver to throw to. He’s been sacked 12 times and has thrown 3 TD’s against 4 INT’s. HC Adam Gase is beyond dead man walking, yet this is a game if the guy has any juice left that he would try to get his team to compete in. Right now the Jets have to be included as a favorite to land next year’s prized possession in the NFL Draft, QB Trevor Lawrence and a win could put that in jeopardy as the hapless Atlanta falcons share an 0-5 record.

LB Kyle Van Noy is questionable to play this week with a groin injury. He played last week against the Niners but that’s a tough injury to play through. Sam Eguavoen would replace Van Noy if he can’t go. We also lost DT Davon Godchaux with a torn biceps and this should give DT Raekwon Davis a lot more snaps along with Brandon Sieler who has been fantastic in a Dolphins uniform. Sieler has played 38% of the snaps this season already and I expect that will increase significantly this week with Godchaux out. Mike Gesicki finally was more involved in the offense and I hope that continues. He averaged over 18 YPC last week on 5 receptions so we need to keep feeding him the ball. I honestly don’t expect Bell to be a Miami Dolphins, my guess is the Bills. Either way, hope we make the right decision.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

5 sacks total to boos the yearly total to 14 sacks.

It is October but not the 31st so there are no Boos yet.

A Martavis Bryant😏 sighting. Last year he was seen in Vegas.

My partner at work has a friend that has parties every weekend, before covid, that she attends frequently. Bryant attended one of the parties last year. She’s a Steelers fan, so she got a kick out of it.

Mike E — you are so awesome in the rights, but seems things change that the QB will be Flacco. You’d think the starter going out would be good for us….. in this case not so sure.

Not for it, but might be a value add. And Flores did come from a place where they added disgruntled talent on the cheap all the time.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – I don’t know, Darnold is definitely more elusive than Flacco, but also more prone to making that WTF type of throw. If we handle business as we should, neither QB should beat us.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Guess it depends on which Flacco we get on Sunday. Age does come into play. And he did sign on to be a back-up after all. Strong arm and likes to go deep though.

For those who think Europe did better respnding to COVID than the US.

    https://www.foxnews.com/world/europe-coronavirus-lockdowns-restrictions-winter

“Europe has seen nearly 230,000 confirmed deaths from the virus — more than the nearly 217,000 reported virus deaths so far in the United States, according to figures tallied by Johns Hopkins University.”

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Depends on exactly how many countries you include, but Europe also has a much greater population. So yeah more deaths in Kentucky than Texas. Am sorry to see them starting to get the “second wave” though. A sign we will as well.

Mike, why isn’t 45 sacks attainable?

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah, Stanger. If it doesn’t come from the “great leader” then it is a fake. Even though it has been proven that he has lied 20,000 fucking time since in he was elected the u50 believe every word he says.

there are two and a half times as many people in Europe as in the US but, you know, being willfully ignorant is in fashion now a days.

  18. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I am so looking forward to the rest of the season that I bought a 75 inch 8K tv to watch it on.

  19. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – That’s true. The EU has a population of around 450 million compared to the US’s 350-ish million. So it does matter which European countries they count. I don’t recall the article saying. They did say Europe, versus EU and mention Poland so who knows. Point is, Europe handled the pandemic no better than the US.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The population of Europe is 740 Million in 2016 and it consists of 44 countries which EACH INDEPENDENTLY handled their approach differently.

Without comparing to other countries we can still say it was handled poorly in the US.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I disagree, without the China ban, because we have a large Chinese population, we would’ve been like Northern Italy and hit with massive cases early, before we knew what to do. They told us 2M people would die.

I think our real death count is less than 100K and possibly less than 50K. 45% of the deaths were from nursing homes, where we get a huge % of regular deaths from each year. Many of those deaths are on Cuomo’s bad policy.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

That is the current population of Europe, although I did not see what countries they included. However, the independent handling by each country is no different than the independent handling by state in the US. Also don’t know what countries in the Johns Hopkins numbers were used to arrive at the numbers they quoted.

I don’t think it was handled poorly here. I think it messaged poorly for sure and that’s the White House’s fault. But the measures taken at the national were about all anyone could have done. At the state level they were all over the place. Some worked, some didn’t.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If you go the classic definition of “Europe” you are at 700 mil+, but then the article was unclear about what stats they were using. But there is no doubt Covid is a biotch. And whatever claims the EU had at quelling it are fading with the new upsurge. Some Trump folks might like that….. but not a good sign for the world.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Some/most never Trumpers like the high counts that are reported here, among other things like UI rate, business closing, anything that shows less than a strong economy…

Europe has been beating us in covid numbers for over a month now, and like really crushing our that way. The second explosion of the virus there was later than ours but its been bigger too. The whole point i made a while back about this not being a political topic is that no country is doing well, no government can fix this or make it worse for that matter. We as the punlic can, i mean who cares if some dumbass says yeah go have group sex on the beaches, you will be fine. I mean you can listen to them because group sex on the beach is your thing and you were just wanting someone to tell you its ok, or you can be smart about it and know that only a bunch of wall flow fatties show up for that shit and its just not worth it. Stop making covid political and you wills tart to put the onus on the right group and do something about it. All they can do is keep us afloat, and neither side seems to want to do that either because its an election year.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We haven’t had the second explosion and would defy any claim to that rhetoric.

      • D's avatar D says:

We definitely seem to have. Apri we were hitting 30-35k new cases a day, and then it had dropped down to 15-25k for a month or more and then it came back and has been in the 35-40k range after, maybe calling it a second wave is inappropriate use of terminology, but it does seem to fit the pattern of something that comes in waves, cresting to a max, dropping down, and cresting again. Also, seriously why is the rhetoric, it was a statement and not a charged one at all.

  47. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The spin on this Burisma thing is amazing to me. The Prez uses hundreds of millions (tax payor dollars) as a cudgel to attempt to get dirt on his political rival, and his supporters split hairs to absolve him of that, then are all outraged that Biden may have used his influence for his son’s benefit.

None of this matters. Even though it’s crystal clear this is Trump’s big play before the election, it’s not changing anything.

This election is going to come down to a few swing states. Trump will lose the popular vote by millions, and may win reelection based on those few states, or Biden will trounce him by grabbing those states. All the rest of this is a continual stream of muddying waters and disinformation on both sides.

And if you are a Trump supporter and call out disinformation by the MSM or the left without acknowledging it on your own side, you are either blind or deluding yourself. Trump’s number one weapon is disinformation. He wields it with impunity and without discretion.

And that is absolutely the last thing I will say about either of these idiots until the election is over. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow, so now what the right is doing is comparable to the MSM, yeah OK.

The point of this NYP article is to show Biden is corrupt, which we already knew, except those that believe the MSM and the Biden camp.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, wow. Like I said if you can’t acknowledge how Trump uses misinformation far more than any prez in history (basically every thing he says) you’re blind or deluding yourself. I see it very clearly from both sides because I realize how bad both sides are.

It’s you partisan people on both sides that perpetuate this BS system we are currently stuck in because you continue to be pawns in a game you clearly can’t comprehend. All you see is your opponent and all the horrible things they do, while your angelic side fights to protect you out of the altruism in their hearts. 🙄

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I never said Trump was perfect and doesn’t twist the truth, but he doesn’t flat out lie, like the left does. Nothing even close to Obama’s if you want to keep your dr. Sure he tells some lies, like all politicians do, but at least you can interview him, unlike all the softballs in the lefts interviews, and the bottomline is he delivers, economy, jobs, companies back in the country, trade deficits, regulations, taxes…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        Steve,

I get it if you believe he delivers on the things you want or directions you want to move. Most of the people I know voting for Trump are going that direction based on ideology and the fact they feel he’s tried to move things in a direction they want. I do get that. And I am not calling out ANYONE simply for voting for Trump.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I understand people that vote for Trump reluctantly (or Biden reluctantly) because they see it as a lesser evil, or no other choice, or voting against the other guy, etc. Or the biggest reason…ideology and a move away from socialism, etc.

I think most of those people see Trump for what he is. It’s the hypocrisy of Trump’s devout that I can’t comprehend. They will defend him on one hand, and call out everyone else for the same things on the other. It’s unfathomable.

But I think, in this climate if you don’t pick one, you are voting for the other one

So if you are really against one of them (as I am) you can’t vote for a 3rd person

I also think it’s possible to strip down all the bs from the opinions and make a decision on the policy you think is better for you between the two

At this point, if some one hasn’t formed an opinion already, trying to step into this climate to suddenly find out about the candidates is nearly impossible. Bc so many people have strong opinions already.

Voted early today and had to wear a finger rubber, i.e like the one a doc uses for a butt exam. Lmao. Strange humor to me. Shitty election requires a finger glove.

So this reminds me of something and gives me the opportunity to laugh at my ex, so I’m going to take advantage of that every time. I may have told this story here before, if I have, just laugh along with me again. So back in the day before we were married, he was in med school and he’s telling me they paired the med students up so they could practice rectal exams. I was just mortified. I was thinking of my co workers and what would I have done if someone told me I had to practice rectal exams with them…no way in hell! So anyway, I asked him who he was paired up with, he said, some big fingered guy! Cracks me up every time!

People’s perception of reality is skewed by their own personal beliefs. Everyone does it. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t do that. Regardless of who wins this election I still think the USA will be okay if more people can learn how to be nicer to each other. The government is always going to churn. The people make this country what it is anyway. Until we someday let the government take that away.

I’m going to say this as nice as I can. I have never seen 4 years of pissing and whining from one side after losing an election. Those pissers and moaners want to stand proudly at what they’ve done for the last 4 years, then go ahead and be proud of your incessant whining and complaining of anything and everything Trump. TDS exists, it’s real, and far too many have it. I’m actually curious to see what these people that I see every day are going to do with their time if Biden wins. What in the hell will they find to complain about? Mitch McConnell maybe?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Goes both ways. Trump was complaining about the Dems even when the GOP had the House, Senate and Oval office. Still does now when they have just the House.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve also noticed that over the last… say 3-4 presidential elections have been deemed the most important election in our lifetimes. WTF does that even mean? Some years it’s not that important? Some people identify so much by politics that if their candidate loses they spend all their time crying about it until the next election. That’s pretty sad.

  81. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Mitch McConnell may very well lose his seat. But, he built a political career on doing nothing but obstructing any piece of democratically backed legislation he could. He’s proud of it. He alone represents what’s bad about our government, and he’s been there for just short of 35 years! I hope he goes away with Trump. He’s made tons of legislation he has pushed through. He’ll be able to retire nicely.

not the obvious, lol ………..it’s the 16 republicans and one crooked hillary that TRUMP had to dispatch to win the presidency ……….lol.

    TRUMP 2020 bitches 🙂

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Have you ever gone to a party or gathering of some sort and there is always one or even a few people who almost immediately want to know where you stand politically?

Then if you say umm… not really sure right now, not looking to discuss politics – but they are baffled that you’re undecided or as amped up about it like they are. They now want to spend the entire party trying to convince you of their opinions. That’s the mentality that slows down the progress of our country. That us against them mentality. The people feed the political system and it’s a minority of the country that controls and promotes the hysteria.

Like Mike has said, TDS is real and the reason I agree with him is because – I only joined FB in 2015 which was before Trump. It was mostly people reconnecting, sharing pics and stories of their lives and whatever interests they have. The politics was pretty low amongst people I became friends with. Then the 2016 election came along and a friggin volcano erupted and it’s still going. I watched the divide between family and friends start like I’ve never seen before.

It showed me that for some, politics is more important than love and friendship. Good luck with that one.

  84. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Completely agree with first 2 paragraphs, then you become what the rest of what you say because you allude to TDS as the culprit.

Where is that mirror Piggy tried to have you look into to?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Krisna, no need to be ornery here. TDS is not the sole culprit, but it’s part of it. When people create their own hatred for a person and in this case a president, it starts spiraling into other areas of their life. The same thing would be happening if Hillary had won. Obama was president when I joined FB and I saw some ugly shit said about him as well. The moral of what I’ve been saying is it’s about we the people. The people put candidates in office. Try being more civil to each other and the government will represent that.

  85. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Please, not Mitch McConnell and Amy McGrath here. I live in a border state, if the TV is on, there are political ads for both of them on, just sick sick sick of it. Bad thing is, if I could vote for either of them, I likely wouldn’t.

I really think a lot of people cast their votes not for a candidate they like, but against one they don’t like. We should have better candidates than we do. Why don’t we have better ones? I blame the damn media, poking their nose into every move a person has made since they were in elementary school. I know I wouldn’t want to be judged on things I did way back when. People grow and evolve. But not if you are running for office. That stuff is with you for life and the media is all to eager to be the first to out someone for something. Dirty Laundry.

If you believe one side is the truth and other side is not, you don’t have any truth. Being nicer to each other is also being honest with each other. I know it’s sort of a utopian view, but is it really? Each individual decides how they behave with others. That’s where it starts. Not a group or society, individuals.
