Week 6 – Jets @ Dolphins

Defense was the story last week as the Dolphins played their best game of 2020 with a total and complete dismantling of the San Francisco 49ers. QB Jimmy Garoppolo probably wished he waited one more week to come back, and I’d bet HC Kyle Shanahan wishes he didn’t put Jimmy G. in either because he clearly looked like he wasn’t ready to play. The Dolphins defense hounded Jimmy G. and his wobbly ankle yielded wobbly throws and he was unable to escape the rush which was heavy all day. 5 sacks total to boost the yearly total to 14 sacks. Don’t spit on that guys, that’s a legit improvement from last season where we managed a season’s total of 23. Our current pace for sacks put us at 45, which is unlikely, but either way puts us close to doubling last year’s output. The rush came from everywhere, inside with Elandon Roberts, Jerome Baker and Zach Sieler and outside with Van Ginkle and Ogbah. Add in 3 turnovers, 2 INT’s (Xavien Howard) and 1 fumble recovery (Christian Wilkins) and it was great day for the defense.

Now on to the offense which by the way, also came to play. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 350 yards with 3 TD’s and zero INT’s. The run game was merely a complement, Myles Gaskin rushed 16 times for 57 yards and 1 TD and they sprinkled in a little of Breida and a rush or two from Bowden and Grant. RB Jordan Howard was healthy scratch. Now there is talk of the possibility of the Dolphins signing former Steeler and Jets RB Le’Veon Bell. At the moment of this writing, Bell has narrowed it down to 3 teams, the Bills, Chiefs and Dolphins. Does adding Le’Veon Bell make us a playoff contender? I suppose it depends on how we use him. The 2 RB’s we acquired in the offseason are basically spectators to the Myles Gaskin show. Breida and Howard have 114 yards rushing combined on 35 caries while Gaskin has 64 carries and 249 yards rushing. Bell looked anything but a top tier back in NY this season and last night but i9njuries have hampered him. He has only 19 carries this season and really is quite far removed from the elite RB he was in Pittsburgh all the way back in 2017. Personally, I’d say he was more of a product of that offense, having a great run blocking O-line, also catching passes from Roethlisberger when plays broke down and having WR’s Antonio Brown (in his prime) along with Martavis Bryant . So many times Big Ben extended the play and found Bell for a hige gain because the field was cleared out by Brown and Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Is it possible he’s that same player? I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Dolphins will play a late game this week (4PM) due to COVID-19 rescheduling. The Jets come in to Miami at a low point of their season. They are 32nd in scoring at 15 PPG and 32nd in defense allowing 32.2 PPG. Just dreadful. Last week we beat a team not at their best, and we put our foot on their neck. We need to do the same this week. Yes, the Jets cut Le’Veon Bell but may be getting 2 receivers back, Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Denzel Mims (IR hamstring). Both WR’s would be a boost to an anemic Jets offense that has featured Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan, Braxton Berrios and TE Chris Herndon. Sam darnold has had a difficult season to say the least, the O-line pass protection has been leaky and he doesn’t really have a reliable receiver to throw to. He’s been sacked 12 times and has thrown 3 TD’s against 4 INT’s. HC Adam Gase is beyond dead man walking, yet this is a game if the guy has any juice left that he would try to get his team to compete in. Right now the Jets have to be included as a favorite to land next year’s prized possession in the NFL Draft, QB Trevor Lawrence and a win could put that in jeopardy as the hapless Atlanta falcons share an 0-5 record.

LB Kyle Van Noy is questionable to play this week with a groin injury. He played last week against the Niners but that’s a tough injury to play through. Sam Eguavoen would replace Van Noy if he can’t go. We also lost DT Davon Godchaux with a torn biceps and this should give DT Raekwon Davis a lot more snaps along with Brandon Sieler who has been fantastic in a Dolphins uniform. Sieler has played 38% of the snaps this season already and I expect that will increase significantly this week with Godchaux out. Mike Gesicki finally was more involved in the offense and I hope that continues. He averaged over 18 YPC last week on 5 receptions so we need to keep feeding him the ball. I honestly don’t expect Bell to be a Miami Dolphins, my guess is the Bills. Either way, hope we make the right decision.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

  46. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I caught something that I thought perfectly illustrates attention to detail from our HC. When the 2 minute warning hit in the 4th, Flores handed the red challenge flag to an assistant. You can’t accidently throw it and get a penalty if you don’t have it.

It’s a little thing, but in NFL games, little things add up to wins.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  56. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Niners pick up a 1st on 3rd and short with a QB sneak. Brilliant playcall…

  57. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Some other observations from around the league:
Ryan Tannehill is now one of the most clutch QBs in the game.
    How bad is Kirk Cousins?
    Baker Mayfield benched.
    Carson Wentz deserves better

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brandon Jones is what Flores wanted from Minkah. Jones looks like a good value pick in the 3rd round playing that role. He also wears Minkah’s jersey #29. LOL

  59. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Jimmy G cutting up the Rams D tonight

  60. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m watching all the post game wrap up shows lately

It feels so weird after avoiding them all last year….lol

  61. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There are 10 teams with no more than 1 win this year

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Getting back a player like Byron Jones makes a big difference. We’re seeing that now. 🙂

  63. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Of the teams who have played 6 games, only the Ravens defense (104 points) has given up fewer points than the Dolphins defense (113 points). Only team that can realistically top us is the Steelers if they give up less than 19 points next week playing at the Titans. Next is the Cardinals who will have to hold the Seahawks to less than 11 points next week. The rest will have to throw shutouts like we just did.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Awe shit, forgot about the Rams. If the Rams hold the 49er’s to 21 points they will drop us to #3 scoring defense by 2 points.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, I almost posted a very similar comment and thought, nah too much stuff. But even though it seems like a lot, it is all stuff that should and likely will happen.

We legitimately might have the #2 or #3 scoring D in the league once all the teams have played 6.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tannehill is the same QB he was with us, the difference is the team around him. He was pretty good the year he got hurt for us, but his pocket presence still sucks and in no way can he carry a team.

  70. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Now we know!!!

  71. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On Tannehill – He’s very confident now though, and he’s hitting on passes he would miss here. Give the guy credit. He’s definitely in an ideal situation with Henry and that O-line as well as A.J. Brown and Jonnu Smith but he’s elevated his play and confidence. He’s not the same exact player he was here, he’s better now. I can admit it, not sure why others can’t. Sure, put him on the Jets and he’s a mess, or even put him back on the Dolphins and he’s not the same but he’s playing really well.

  73. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our run defense is still very suspect. I’m happy the way the defense, especially the pass rush and pass coverage has looked but we’re not a great defense. If we play a team that decides to run the ball on us they will be successful.

  75. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  76. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we’ve moved into 2nd place in the division passing up the pats!

  77. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Gaskin had 91 yards rushing, almost broke 100

  78. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

that was a hell of a catch by the jets defender!

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – Not at all. I think our run defense is pretty porous. I see far too many big gash runs of 10 yards or more.

  80. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Again teamwork. Rowe made this huge yard list sack possible for Ogbah, and I’d bet he was glad to do it.

Gone are the days of Wanny’s vanilla D. I miss him, not😏

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our defense is a work in progress and it’s been better than I expected or almost as good as I hoped. I bet Derrick Henry would be licking his chops tom play us though.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Is Parker having an off year (as the announcer says) this year?

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I think Lofton might have been talking about when he talked him during another season, like in 2018, If I remember the whole conversation correctly. I think he goes on to say his stats from last year, and so far this year, and that he is finally living up to his first round status.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        What Bookman said

  83. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  84. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With 3 of our last 4 games being blowouts Parker has mostly been unused after the big leads.

What kind of sadistic fuck would keep throwing to him in garbage time with his injury? He’s manning up and playing hurt, because we need him.

Don’t get so caught up in stats, it’s about wins and spreading the ball around. Inflated stats breed salary cap hell.

Fitz had about 150 yards against the Jags, but we won comfortably. Dak had been getting mega yards passing, but they can’t seem to win, just like Burrow and Herbert. Play the situation and not fantasy football.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The comment wasn’t that Parker was not that Parker was having an off year. It was that he had an off year 2 years ago and has been a stud ever since

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve heard rumblings of his stats being subpar. 971 yards, 77 catches and 5 tds at current pace.

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with Mike on the run D. We seem to be using smoke and mirrors, when we stop the run, but straight up 7 in the box it’s a struggle.

We just need to accept that’s the way it’s going to be this year. Next year I expect a DT with run stuffing ability to be added.

  86. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought run D looked pretty good. A couple of the big runs we’re pad the stats garbage time runs when the Jets were hopelessly out the game. Look at all the 3 & outs early on in the game

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree it was mostly good yesterday, and when you have a lead and play the pass and they slip Gore underneath, you give them that, especially when you tighten it up deep in our territory.

Total overall play was excellent yesterday, any better would’ve just been overkill.

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve seen enough seasons where our passing D or run D stats have looked good on one side of the ball and we thought that unit was pretty good, only to get gashed some weeks.

When you suck like the jets do the opponent picks where they want to attack, and may spare the other.

    Stats smats

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We thought Seattle’s pass D was bad, then couldn’t score on them. Those stats were inflated, because of teams like Dallas and Atlanta passing against soft coverage trying to come back.

Someone should keep stats for close games while within 1 score to show a more competitive stat, but even that isn’t always accurate.

  89. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think the D is trying to keep everything in front of them and not give up the big plays, since we started this in Jax we are 3-1

  90. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the next 6 games are very winnable we could be 9-3 at that point, the tough games out of those are LA @ home and @ the cards

  91. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t have any “Pom Poms” out by any means!
But that’s not a bad day at the office!

    RUSHING ATT YDS TD LG
    F. Gore 11 46 0 14
    T. Johnson 3 42 0 34
    L. Perine 6 26 0 13

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s over 100 yards and Johnson was just ripping off big runs every time he got the ball.

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

He had 1 run for 34!
        2 runs for a total of 8?

So he had a big run

That’s not what I call ripping off “big” runs!

Now if he would have had 20 carries with an average of 4+ I could agree with you

  92. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The toughest will be LA, it’s great we are at home and coming off a bye when we face them.

  93. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Here’s a Fansided article written by Brian Miller.

Miami Dolphins have a lot of work to do even in victory
    by Brian Miller1 h ago
On Sunday, the Miami Dolphins got an important division win but there is work to be done.
Beating the New York Jets on Sunday put the Miami Dolphins in second place in the AFC East but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Although the Dolphins won convincingly on Sunday, there is still work to do after they saw a second half collapse offensively. The 24-0 victory over the Jets is the team’s second win in a row but now, it’s time to get back to the training facility and figure out what went wrong in quarters three and four.

When you’re leading by 3 TDs against a team you’re far superior to why try to take chances that may allow a team to get back into the game? We saw what happened in SF when the officiating crew gift wrapped a TD to the 49ers, our O got back to business, it’s not like we couldn’t have done the same yesterday had that situation come up.

We aren’t the Patriots, when Moss was there, we’re still trying to find our way and wanted to work on the run game. Jets were probably stacking the box too.

  94. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I watched a recap of last night and some of the plays that I missed in the second half and didnt really see much in the way of poor playcalling, just really poor decision making on the part of Fitz. It was like he decided where he was going to throw the ball pre-snap and coverage be damned. He had several wide open receivers in front of him on several of those 3rd downs and redzone plays but blew it.

On a different note, what’s the point of having backfield refs if none of them is going to call holding that is happening right in front of their faces? It happens game in and game out and not just to our team although there were some egregious non calls yesterday.

  95. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Chan Gailey still calls too many screens though, that is one complaint I have about the play calling.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

We did have 1 successful screen though!
      That is encouraging!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s really hard to critique a game like yesterday’s, because of opponent and lead. I try to stay away from getting too critical afterwards, when it’s a blowout. During the game is different, I’m probably bitching at every dumb call I don’t like.

We also don’t know what’s in the coaches head, are they trying to protect an injured player, are they trying to reduce injuries in general…
