Week 6 – Jets @ Dolphins

Defense was the story last week as the Dolphins played their best game of 2020 with a total and complete dismantling of the San Francisco 49ers. QB Jimmy Garoppolo probably wished he waited one more week to come back, and I’d bet HC Kyle Shanahan wishes he didn’t put Jimmy G. in either because he clearly looked like he wasn’t ready to play. The Dolphins defense hounded Jimmy G. and his wobbly ankle yielded wobbly throws and he was unable to escape the rush which was heavy all day. 5 sacks total to boost the yearly total to 14 sacks. Don’t spit on that guys, that’s a legit improvement from last season where we managed a season’s total of 23. Our current pace for sacks put us at 45, which is unlikely, but either way puts us close to doubling last year’s output. The rush came from everywhere, inside with Elandon Roberts, Jerome Baker and Zach Sieler and outside with Van Ginkle and Ogbah. Add in 3 turnovers, 2 INT’s (Xavien Howard) and 1 fumble recovery (Christian Wilkins) and it was great day for the defense.

Now on to the offense which by the way, also came to play. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 350 yards with 3 TD’s and zero INT’s. The run game was merely a complement, Myles Gaskin rushed 16 times for 57 yards and 1 TD and they sprinkled in a little of Breida and a rush or two from Bowden and Grant. RB Jordan Howard was healthy scratch. Now there is talk of the possibility of the Dolphins signing former Steeler and Jets RB Le’Veon Bell. At the moment of this writing, Bell has narrowed it down to 3 teams, the Bills, Chiefs and Dolphins. Does adding Le’Veon Bell make us a playoff contender? I suppose it depends on how we use him. The 2 RB’s we acquired in the offseason are basically spectators to the Myles Gaskin show. Breida and Howard have 114 yards rushing combined on 35 caries while Gaskin has 64 carries and 249 yards rushing. Bell looked anything but a top tier back in NY this season and last night but i9njuries have hampered him. He has only 19 carries this season and really is quite far removed from the elite RB he was in Pittsburgh all the way back in 2017. Personally, I’d say he was more of a product of that offense, having a great run blocking O-line, also catching passes from Roethlisberger when plays broke down and having WR’s Antonio Brown (in his prime) along with Martavis Bryant . So many times Big Ben extended the play and found Bell for a hige gain because the field was cleared out by Brown and Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Is it possible he’s that same player? I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Dolphins will play a late game this week (4PM) due to COVID-19 rescheduling. The Jets come in to Miami at a low point of their season. They are 32nd in scoring at 15 PPG and 32nd in defense allowing 32.2 PPG. Just dreadful. Last week we beat a team not at their best, and we put our foot on their neck. We need to do the same this week. Yes, the Jets cut Le’Veon Bell but may be getting 2 receivers back, Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Denzel Mims (IR hamstring). Both WR’s would be a boost to an anemic Jets offense that has featured Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan, Braxton Berrios and TE Chris Herndon. Sam darnold has had a difficult season to say the least, the O-line pass protection has been leaky and he doesn’t really have a reliable receiver to throw to. He’s been sacked 12 times and has thrown 3 TD’s against 4 INT’s. HC Adam Gase is beyond dead man walking, yet this is a game if the guy has any juice left that he would try to get his team to compete in. Right now the Jets have to be included as a favorite to land next year’s prized possession in the NFL Draft, QB Trevor Lawrence and a win could put that in jeopardy as the hapless Atlanta falcons share an 0-5 record.

LB Kyle Van Noy is questionable to play this week with a groin injury. He played last week against the Niners but that’s a tough injury to play through. Sam Eguavoen would replace Van Noy if he can’t go. We also lost DT Davon Godchaux with a torn biceps and this should give DT Raekwon Davis a lot more snaps along with Brandon Sieler who has been fantastic in a Dolphins uniform. Sieler has played 38% of the snaps this season already and I expect that will increase significantly this week with Godchaux out. Mike Gesicki finally was more involved in the offense and I hope that continues. He averaged over 18 YPC last week on 5 receptions so we need to keep feeding him the ball. I honestly don’t expect Bell to be a Miami Dolphins, my guess is the Bills. Either way, hope we make the right decision.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

      Especially bs the jests

What if the schedule wasn’t modified and we had that 2 weeks in a row vs the jests thing

That would have been the best stretch in the history of Dolphins football

  1. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Generally speaking yesterday

I though we missed a lot of opportunities
Against a team like the jests, that will still get you a shutout

But that won’t work against teams that are a little bit better

It’s nice to come away from a win and still have a ton to work on

Also, as much as I respect Fitz. I’m ready for Tua now. I trust Flores and won’t second guess him – but I don’t think Fitz play has been so good lately

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Who cares? You don’t have to put it the effort it takes to win 50-0, if you do you’ll be worn down, when you play the better teams.

I hate the saying that won’t work against better teams like they don’t know that and would do that against better teams. It’s why teams play to the level of competition.

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

One other thing I noted yesterday

I can’t believe how bad Gase has made the jests

    They weren’t good before Gase
But man, what are they doing?
    That offense is so bad
It looks like what he did here in Miami too
Why did he try the same stuff that didn’t work in Miami

He got a 2nd chance to start fresh
And he chose to do all the stuff that didn’t work again…

    Wtf

    For now

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You guys do realize Darnold us their starting QB and he was out right? I mean you have to give that to Gase, but yeah Gase is a horrible guy to have in charge.

Flacco was terrible and should retire.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Having Bryon Jones back is making a huge difference. Having one shutdown CB is great but having two is more than twice as good. With just one the QB just throws to the other side.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you watched the game yesterday, Flacco missed a wide open Perriman TWICE early on. He burned Jones and if Flacco was accurate they would have had a TD. Once he underthrew him allowing Jones to get back and the other throw I think may have been out of bounds, but he had a shot.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

To me at least definition of shutdown isn’t that the guy never gets burned. It is that he is so good that you will let him go one-on-one with receivers and leave it at that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Now they just throw to whoever Needham is covering.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Having 2 shutdown CBs changes the entire dynamics of what Flores is trying to do, he can blitz more and have the other 9 guys open to do whatever (open the playbook).

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought Tua’s first throw was a dart. Nice throw to Laird.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It was a great throw, it was just for so little yardage no one cares

Also he was upset with himself after the throw. I think he was thinking he waited too long to make the throw

Was Gesicki held without a catch yesterday? Not that it matters, but I don’t remember him making a single play.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This has been happening too often IMO. Sometimes Gesicki isn’t getting separation or Fitz is looking elsewhere but too often he’s not allowing Gesicki to make a play on the ball. He’s definitely not targeting him much at all.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think it’s a Fitz or a playcalling thing. He was known as a non friendly OC to TEs, even though Shaheen and Smythe ate yesterday.

I really don’t care who makes the play. Do you want Gesicki to make a great play 60% of the time its thrown to him or the other 2 getting wide open chances?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I would add in that our three losses showed we can at least run with good teams….. but now we have to show we can beat them. Rams might do that.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, we really should have beaten Seattle.

The Bills are the only team that whooped us pretty good. The game wasn’t as close as the score. But we played without Jones, and it was his guy Diggs that really ate us up. I expect a much better game from us in the rematch.

4 of the Rams wins came against the NFC East.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, I saw that strange scheduling and stat last week. We really don’t know who the Rams are yet, but they should’ve beaten Buffalo. Lost on a homer PI call, just like the Rams beat Dallas on.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In last nights game they tried to give the Rams a fumble recovery, that they returned to the SF 10. The runner was touched and gave himself up before the ball was on the ground, ruled fumble on field. NFL rang the official saying to take another look. Ball was given back to SF.

Were the real Rams on display last night? Not likely. Did we face the real 49ers? No, I think they’re somewhere in between.

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua only threw 2 passes, but he showed what he can do against pressure and they were both right on the money and just the same as his college days. Fitz tends to get wild when he loses focus.

2 passes Like he threw aren’t enough to evaluate him on, but I’d still start him against the Rams.

I’m pretty sure we aren’t going to make any noise in the playoffs, if we get in with Fitz. With Tua? We might, because he may be pretty good come playoff time, if he can get us there.

    Fitz is too inconsistent.

Yes!! Thank you for noticing. The Herd is playing well, exceptionally so considering our former starting QB left somewhat unexpectedly over the summer and we have a redshirt freshman starting and doing an amazing job.

We play FAU this Saturday, I’m sure OD will have something to say about it this week.

I don’t think Randy knows what he just wrote. When you can win 24-0 and have lots of inconsistent execution you must be a pretty good team. We’ve done just that in 3 blowout wins. In years past with no talent we had to play perfect or close to it to win.

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Dolphins have the 10th easiest schedule the rest of the season.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hmmm, what happened to that killer schedule they projected for us?

But I still think its a tough schedule, it’s not about w/l record of the teams you’re going to be playing. The cheats are tougher than 2-3, the Bill’s are tough, Rams, Raiders, Chiefs…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I don’t really think SOS means much. So much about each individual matchup comes down to when you are playing someone and what is going on with the team on that given week.

I.e. Any other week of the season we probably lose to the Niners or at the very least have a much tougher game.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        e.g.

  43. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Dolphins are tied for 7th in penalties per game at 4.7, which is down from 5.8 in 2019.

We had 5 penalties on Sunday for only 25 yds.

  44. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Team is much better run than years past but we still have a lot of young guys trying to figure things out. I don’t think we are playoff caliber yet but with the added spot this year, we may slide in. I don;t see us making any noise if we do but it would be nice to accomplish.

These blowouts help the refs side with us more often with their BS calls. That’s a definite positive moving forward.

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The cheats and LAC are the only 2 teams on the jets schedule with a losing record. I see 0-16.

  48. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve tried using the logic in the past of this team I hate has some blowout wins, but they haven’t beaten anyone yet. If you’re blowing multiple teams out in the NFL and aren’t getting blown out, you have a good team.

What if we had beaten the cheats making the 1-4, they would be in the group of we haven’t beaten anyone yet, and buffalo too after they lose to the Chiefs they would’ve been 3-3.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The good thing is, this isn’t college football, really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, or who you beat, or by how much, everything is decided on the field, ultimately. I think the other stuff can just be used as a gauge on progress…IMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t get that concerned about it. Yeah it’s fun to root for the higher pick but we’ll see what happens. It will still be a quality pick regardless.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jax, Det & Cin arent very good teams

The rest of that schedule though…

My prediction for the outcome of their season: 4-12

Not a good record but the other side of that coin is that there are a lot of bad teams

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Texans aren’t good right now either but with 10 games left for the most part someone has to win and someone has to lose, so they can’t all finish with horrible records. There’s a lot of football that has to be played.

Standing up is customary when you state your appearance to the court on the record

But I guess he miscalculated where the frame of his screen ends and begins

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe the opposing coach needs to be smart enough to decline the penalty. There’s lots of game stopping hacks that can be done, that maybe needs to be unloopholed by the league. The ones I hate are when the officiating crew creates their own hack for the cheats. I’ve seen it several times.

I think it was Vrabel that used one on belicheat last year. 4th down ball on about the cheats 40 and their opponent was punting, but kept running the clock with delay of game penalties, and ran off about an extra minute and a half. Belicheat was pissed.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Vrabel did that in the playoff game against the cheats. It was amusing because Belicheat used it earlier in the year and kind of brought it to everyone’s attention. Then it went against him when it mattered. They changed that rule this year to stop teams from doing it.

In regards to opposing coaches declining the penalty. I don’t think declining is the smart move. Not a lot of coaches are going to decline a penalty that gives them a first down. Even in 2nd and short, nothing is a gimme. You lose a yd or two on 2nd, suddenly it’s 3rd and middling, and you end up with a FG instead of a TD.

It’s more about Vrabel just maximizing every possible opportunity in that scenario. The Texans still should have won, but Vrabel gave his team a better chance and they capitalized.

We have a weird history with RB’s. Guys like Lamar Miller and Kenyan Drake that we decided can’t be a bellcow back and then they go elsewhere and become that. Then we sign a bellcow back for $10M and start the previous year’s 7th RD pick and the guy we trade a 5th RD pick for also gets very limited playing time. It is strange, and it’s not ll the same regime either.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Lamar Miller or Kenyan Drake are good examples. Neither really have been bell cows for more than a moment or a season. But yes our commitment to the running game under Philbin and Gase was not good. Ricky Williams, and Lamar Smith for a season were bell cows. I don’t see it as a weird thing other than our team has not been built right for a long time.

    Tim,
I actually picture you as more like Chong, so I never want to meet you in person to see the real you because I love Tommy Chong. Lol

I saw the “Lol”, but I said what you said!!! Lol

Seriously though….I’ve said I have liked what I’ve seen the past few weeks. I don’t have high expectations right now. I want to see them compete, play with energy and execute. Execution doesn’t always mean success, but I still want to see consistent execution. Sometimes the other teams will win the individual battles but execution can still be there. I’d like to see more, but I like the direction this team seems to be heading. I think we still need some personnel improvements, but we’re getting there.

Thank you for saying all that in a text.

Just a random thought….is OD ok?

Rays in WS and not a peep.

KRISHNA: I’m OK but my wife is not. She was supposed to be released from the hospital Saturday. Well, here we are late Monday Night and she’s still there. She needs a series of physical therapy treatments because her leg with the knee replacement is not yet strong enough to support her. Can’t get out of bed. Can’t go to shower, etc., etc. And since I’m post-op for a double hernia I AM NOT ABLE TO HELP HER VERY MUCH.

We’re waiting on the insurance company to see if they’ll cover her for transfer to a physical therapy facility. NOBODY seems to know WHEN the Gods will rule on this. But we hope it is SOON! Meanwhile, my honey is stuck in this surgical hospital! And we’re very busy at work. But, hey, no one said life was EASY, especially THIS OLD ARMY VETERAN!!! So we wait and hope.
    ————————-
I’ve alternately gone ape shit over the RAYS in the World Series AND the Dolphins shutting out the hated Jets! I believe I’m the only member of this board who ATTENDED the last Dolphins shutout of the Jets. It happened when the Dolphins won the AFC Championship Game in (where else?) the Historic Orange Bowl 14-0 in a quagmire!! The trip to Super Bowl 17 was a trip I’ll never forget, even tho’ the Fins were edged out by the Redskins at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. David Woodley threw a 70-yard touchdown bomb to Jimmy Cefalo on the first play from scrimmage!! Woodley would complete ONLY 3 MORE PASSES THE ENTIRE GAME!! Ahhh–if we’d ONLY had Dan Marino at THIS GAME!!
    ———————–
The 0 and 3 start seems like a distant memory, doesn’t it?? Some of us, however, didn’t give up on the season. NOW, with 3 straight blowout victories, the Fins are in 2nd Place just 1 game behind BEEFALO!!! I can’t tell you how HAPPY I AM to be AHEAD OF NEW ENGLAND in the standings!!
I said the Dolphins would be a legitimate playoff contender THIS SEASON!! Get ready, Dolfans. —-
THE BEST IS YET TO COME (barring devastating injuries).

I hope many of you will keep my wife in your thoughts. Thank you all!

  84. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Wishing Mrs. OD the best as well!

On to football, the media is such garbage. Looking at discussions for the week, the Jets allowing Gase to coach them down for L:awrence is a smart, calculated idea. Good for them!! When Miami played poorly for a new coach against playoff caliber games in his first 4 games, Miami must be PUNISHED for TANKING!

Jets dump some elite starting level talent? Something’s not right but at least they can get Lawrence!
Miami trades off players for a load of draft picks? They are TANKING! PUNISH THEM!

The bias is overt and sickening…just like national media on just about all topics. Propagandists of the worst sort. I don’t mind seeing ESPN lose lots of staff and I hope to see more of it across the country.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My wife is going to kill me because I point out the bias each and every day. This Biden Burisma story should be covered just as much as the Trump/Russia collusion, yet the media won’t give it a second. Did they have any proof and did they find anything with Trump, of course not, but they sullied him nonetheless. Why not let Biden get a little dirty now? They can’t do it, he’s their fucking (sleepy) white knight in shining armor against the bad orange man.

What I did notice about Tua was he ran about 10 yards away after each handoff away from the action. They probably told him don’t take any unnecessary hits so he made sure he got out of Dodge each and every time he could. I just rewatched it last night because it was cool!

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – Follow up on “The Sinner”. The 1st season actually was very good once it got going. The 2nd season wasn’t bad, but the 1st season was kinda riveting after the first couple of episodes. Now we’re watching “Away” with Hilary Swank and Josh Charles. Just OK at best through a couple of episodes.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – Best wishes to you and the Mrs.

  88. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MY SINCERE thanks to all of you for your kind words of support. WE are hoping the insurance company makes a decision TODAY so that we can get my wife the physical therapy she so desperately needs. Sometimes our medical system doesn’t work so well.

OFF TO WORK! Mrs. OD and I love all U guyz and galz!!!

My thoughts are with you and yours OD!

  90. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A lot of the numbers, especially on D look good through 6 games. We’ve had some key players out too. The next man up has done his job, but that’s what our D is designed for, other than the CBs, everyone else is just a scheme fit.

On O we seem to go as Fitz takes us, some games good and we get a blowout, some not so good and we lose. I expect to see more consistency once Tua starts playing, less highs and lows initially, then highs mixed in with good play.

On his first pass Tua looked fast to the outside avoiding the pressure, then throwing a short strike. He appeared to go thru his progressions on his 2nd pass, and anything but a strike would’ve resulted in not getting the 1st down.

The future is bright, go Fins.

  91. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OD, good luck tonight, but not too much😉

  92. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OD, I was supposed to go to the14-0 win over the jets in 1982, but was sick, so I stayed home. I believe it was a rainy day and AJ Duhe had 3 picks.

Sounds like he’s going to be traded. There’s going to be some team who lost a RB that might be willing to give up a late pick for him.

  95. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – If any of this Biden stuff is true, and I’d be willing to bet a certain amount of it is, the media still wants no part of it. That’s my point Rock, they pick and choose what to grab onto and run with and what to sweep away because they don’t like it.

  96. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Positive vibes out to you and the missus, OD.

Mike, glad you guys ended up liking the Sinner. I still thought it was meh. I’m working my way through the 2nd season of The Boys right now. I have Away in my list of shows to watch. It looked interesting. You’ll have to let me know if it picks up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sinner really became interesting in Season 1, what happened to her. Pullman was pretty good as well. He’s good in Season 2 also, the kid was really good.
