Week 11 – Dolphins @ Broncos

Our Miami Dolphins (6-3) travel across the country to play the Denver Broncos (3-6). This Dolphins team has had one consistent thing going all year long, whether we won or lost on game day, it’s that’s the fact that this has been a well coached, well prepared team. The Dolphins are the 4th least penalized teams at 4.3 penalties per game and are 5th at penalty yards per game at 37.8 yards per game. It’s much more than the penalties though, it’s about getting the players to buy in to the program, and in that regard, Brian Flores has been excellent. The contract extension of DL Zach Sieler is an example. Sieler came from the Baltimore Ravens, a winning program and a perennially well run organization with excellent coaching provided by John Harbaugh. Sieler was originally a 7th RD pick that was discarded by the Ravens in 2019 after Week 4 and the Dolphins picked him up quickly. This year, Sieler got more playing time due to a season ending injury to DL Davon Godchaux and Sieler never looked back. Cultivating players like Sieler is just as important as grooming our young QB Tua Tagovailoa as after all, this is a team game.

The Dolphins remain in the top 10 on both offensive scoring (9th at 27.9 PPG) and defensive scoring (5th at 20.2 PPG). The win streak is now up to 5 games in a row as we take on yet another young QB, which will either be 1 year vet Drew Lock if he’s healthy enough to suit up, or rookie Brett Rypien. Which QB starts has yet to be determined at this writing. The Broncos are 28th in offensive scoring at 20.7 PPG and 27th in defensive scoring at 28.2 PPG. QB Tua Tagovailoa gets his 4th start after winning his first 3 contests. The Dolphins will likely get RB Matt Breida back this week but after a strong showing last week, RB Salvon Ahmed will most likely get the majority of the carries with Breida filling in as he had been doing for Myles Gaskin most of the season.

The Broncos bring a good RB tandem of Melvin Gordon and now healthy Phillip Lindsay, as well as a sprinkling from Royce Freeman. The ball has been spread around pretty evenly among the receivers, the leader is TE Noah Fant (35 receptions, 367 yards 2 TD’s), second is rookie WR Jerry Jeudy with 34 receptions for 552 yards and 2 TD’s and a heady 16.2 YPR, followed by WR Tim Patrick with 31 receptions for 444 yards and 3 TD’s. RB Melvin Gordon is the rushing leader with 439 yards and 4 TD’s but the more explosive and more dangerous back is Phillip Lindsay who has an impressive 5.5 YPC. On defense, the Broncos haven’t been effective stopping the run or any passing attack and are in the bottom 5 statistically in both. On the flip side, the Dolphins are just about mid pack in both categories but more importantly, as previously stated, are stingy when it comes to giving up points.

On the offensive line, it looks like Jesse Davis will be back at his usual RT position next to RG Solomon Kindley. Ted Karras remains the center next to LG Ereck Flowers and rookie LT Austin Jackson is back as well, returning a couple of weeks ago against the Cards. On the defensive line, I’m not sure whether DL Christian Wilkins will be able to return, if not the Dolphins will run with Zach Sieler, Raekwon Davis and Emmanuel Ogbah along with depth guys rookies Jason Strowbridge and Benito Jones. At LB, Shaq Lawson, Jerome Baker, Elandon Roberts, Andrew van Ginkel and thumbs up Kyle Van Noy round out the corps. Xavien Howard and Byron Jones make up one of the NFL’s best CB tandems along with slot CB Nik Needham. Rookie Noah Igbinoghene has been pulled back some and is usually in when the Dolphins employ multiple DB’s. The safeties are Eric Rowe and good ole Bobby McCain. I say keep Going with the Flo!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    Dolphins at Broncos

G Solomon Kindley (foot) and LB Kyle Van Noy (hip) are the only Dolphins to get designations. Both of them are listed as questionable.

Broncos QB Drew Lock (ribs) is listed as questionable. CB Bryce Callahan (illness), TE Noah Fant (ribs), G Graham Glasgow (calf), T Jake Rodgers (shoulder), and DT DeShawn Williams (ankle) drew the same listing while LB Joseph Jones (calf) has been ruled out.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was thinking when they compared Justin Herbert to Tua after the game, I think some of the talk was a little unfair. Yes, Herbert threw an INT but his receiver slipped. Tua actually made a very risky throw trying to throw it over a LB who happened to just miss it but that could have easily been a pick also. Not knocking Tua at all, but realistically, the difference between success and failure is sometimes very little.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think Herbert will be okay. Depends on whether he can consistently anticipate his throws. Someone here compared him to Tannehill which I don’t see. I think Tua has better feel for the pocket and pressure – exceptional even. And his field vision is also exceptional. Once he has seen some more defenses the offense should cook. I can’t wait for the KC game to see him head to head with Mahomes.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think the comparison of Tua and Herbert were more along the lines that there are 2 rookie QBs who look like they will be the faces of their respective franchises for the next 10 years

LAST NIGHT I watched most of an FAU football game that was SO BORING IT LITERALLY PUT ME TO SLEEP!!! The Owls eventually beat U-Mass 24-2, but I crashed midway through the 4th quarter. Well, at least FAU is now 5-1 with, I think, 3-4 games left on the schedule. IN the past, I would have been THRILLED. But, right now, the Dolphins are #1 in my football world!
    ———————
Ran into a guy at the local Publix all dressed out in Broncos gear. He took one look at my shirt and said “I hope your Dolphins take it easy on us Sunday afternoon!”
    Y’all have a great day!

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was referring to one in particular where the commentator basically said Herbert threw the pick and didn’t get the job done while Tua was flawless and stepped up. Like I said, it’s a small margin between success and failure. If that LB made the catch and ran it back it could have turned the game in their favor. Not a big deal, this is common in sports and it happens all the time. They often talk in absolutes.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I didn’t hear that. I think 3 teams and the league in general hit home runs with Tua, Burrow and Herbert. Looks like the best QB draft class since Eli, Rivers and Big Ben.

Despite 15 postponed or cancelled games, there are some decent games on today.
    Central time:
IU @ Ohio State 11 am
App St @ Coastal Carolina 11 am
    Cincinnati @ UCF 2:30 pm
    Wis @ NW 2:30 pm
    UCLA @ Oregon 2:30 pm
Oka State @ Ok 6:30 pm
    Among others.

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mike, I agree that Tua didn’t necessary dominate Herbert. Their numbers were actually pretty similar except for the INT, although a big chunk of Herbert’s numbers came on the last drive when the defense softened up. Switch the defenses and I don’t think Tua necessarily does any better.

Like you said, Tua was fortunate the one pass that went through the LB hands wasn’t intercepted, he also was fortunate not to get picked in the endzone when he threw to Parker and two Chargers were the only ones to get their hands on it.

I don’t think Herbert threw an INT because the receiver slipped. That was an INT all the way. Howard read it and beat the receiver to the spot. The receiver went down trying to stop X from getting the INT.

It’s going to be interesting to watch these two QBs develop. Herbert has already shown a lot, and I think the Chargers have a QB. We have a smaller sample size and a better team, so I’m not committing to saying Tua is definitely our guy yet. I still worry about durability. But I will say, I can’t recall the last time I saw a rookie QB look so polished and have his poise in just 3 games. I’m excited to see what he does this week, and moving forward.

My local radio was comparing this last QB draft to 1983. I don’t see that in these guys, but I’d put their potential up there with probably any other draft. Throw in some of the other young guys in the NFL and it should be fun to watch all these young guns develop over the next 10 years.

Linderbaum, Iowa’s OC, is getting love from Matt Millen. I’m telling you guys, the kid is good.

  25. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Stanger, I think 2 QB’s come off the board in the top 5, Lawrence and Fields. Probably to Jets and Jags. I think 2-3 more may be drafted between our Houston pick and our pick. I am thinking other teams who may take one are Washington, Pats, Broncos, Bears, Panthers, and possibly Falcons or even Lions. I think there are some other teams with aging QB’s that are long shots to take one also.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You know the college class so much better than me, but sorry to hear that we may not be able to put that Houston pick up for bid……. unless Fields falls I guess Still glad should be some more QBs getting taken before our actual pick though.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With the Jags and Washington right there, I think the Houston pick would need to be #2 or #3 at the latest. Another team could trade up to us for another position.

ALL YOU BUCKEYE FANS must have held your breath when Ryan Day disdained the clinching FG and, instead chose to go for a 4th and 1 at Indiana’s 4 yard line, which Ohio State failed to convert.
The Bucks gave up almost 500 yards passing to a kid who is NOT in the Heisman chase. Doesn’t speak well for Ohio State’s chances should they make it to college football’s Final Four.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That pass that Tua threw between the LBs hands was Marino-esque. That LB was never catching that ball nor did he even touch it. It was a laser right past him. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Good stuff!

I was wondering about this sentence at the end of the article. “I expect Miami to keep their 15-game win streak alive this weekend in Denver.” Did he mean 5?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A streak we do have is “That bodes well for a Dolphin’s defense that has forced a turnover in 15 consecutive games.”

Maybe that’s what the other guy meant to say and said win streak instead.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Damn, Wilkins out again.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Three players who have really helped turn this defense around this year with how they’re playing that probably flew under the radar for a lot of people are; Davis, Seiler and Van Ginkel. Obviously Ogbah has been a beast but I expected him to make a difference along with Lawson. But those three guys have really stepped up. Also a shout out to Grugier-Hill and Roberts.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s wild to watch us play a deep high safety and then cover zero – all man. The pass rush and blitz schemes are huge, but we have a very good secondary along with LBs who make plays as well.

The defense being ahead of schedule is why we’re 6-3. The STs have been awesome. Tua is doing what it takes to win. Lots of players chipping in. This team is going to get better with each game. You can see they are all prepared and they all play hard. We have a really good HC and staff.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And that INT was awful. Being under pressure doesn’t excuse it in a game of this magnitude.

As I said yesterday every QB is going to get picked I don’t blame him on that one he had no chance that blitzer was on him in a heartbeat

  77. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, that was a ballsy fake punt by the Titans.

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Why does Romo not know the redzone starts at the 20?

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ken, In a shootout, you can make that throw, but in a game against a good defense you don’t make that throw. Protecting the ball is paramount. You can’t give up cheap INTs like that. The Ravens got a quick score on a short field on his INT, then got another score on a short field when he flat out missed a wide open receiver on 3rd down deep in their own territory. Next drive, another missed 3rd down throw to a wide open receiver.

He’s 7 for 13 for 42 yds. If you think he’s playing good, we just have different standards.

And I’m not Steve, I give Tanny credit when he’s playing well, lol. But other than the first drive when he was on the money, he is not playing well so far today. The Ravens are pressuring and he is not making the plays.

Even the last FG was because they converted a fake punt, and he damned near threw an INT on the next play.

Assuming the extra point is good, gonna be 21–10 Texans over the Pats at half. Some of you guys like that…. I don’t. Especially since might show Houston wins a bunch more games.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Pets struggle every week to score. They are currently 27th in the league. This is why they aren’t a threat.

I’m curious to see how we do against them in the rematch. They do have a power run game, so they still may give us a tough game, but they aren’t making the playoffs.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agreed. They aren’t good enough to make the playoffs, but seems they have already proved are good enough to beat us.Any Given Sunday….. and match-up.

35 – 0, I could watch our Defense play the whole game and that would be just fine with me 🙂

Piggy, what if we all pitch in and purchase a jersey for you… would that be ok with the football gods? I do appreciate the sacrifices you are performing though, please continue, thank you!

Frustrating because they were finally finding some rhythm.
