Week 13 – Bengals @ Dolphins

With all the flux in the lineup on the offensive side of the ball necessitated by injuries, COVID-19 etc, the one stalwart, reliable guy all season long has been #11, DeVante Parker. A look at Parker’s catch percentage of 65.8% might not be that impressive unless you watch the games. If you’ve been watching, Parker isn’t getting those easy throws, in fact it seems as if nearly every throw his way is a contested catch. I listen to WQAM as much as I can and NFL radio as well, and of course try to read everything Dolphins that I can. There’s a lot of talk about Tua Tagovailoa needing to learn how to throw to targets that aren’t wide open, as they usually were at Alabama. I believe it, because in some ways it’s counterintuitive. I think there’s a level of trust that a QB has to have in order to make those kind of throws and I believe that’s something that Tua will learn, and one that I also believe may take some time to develop. It’s a skill he hasn’t honed yet, so be patient, but it sure is nice to have to DeVante Parker here as a Miami Dolphin, because he makes those plays seem routine.

This week, the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals come to town, in tow with a couple of former Miami Dolphins assistant coaches. Zac Taylor is the Head Coach, along with DC Lou Anarumo. As you know, the Bengals lost their promising rookie starting QB Joe Burrow to a knee injury and now have either last week’s starter Brandon Allen or Ryan Finley to choose from. Allen had an uneven start and apparently was lucky to escape with only one INT as he was consistently throwing into crowds. Either way, whomever starts at QB for Cincy has a tough task against our Miami Dolphins defense. Man, it just feels great to be able to say that and mean it!

As far as our Miami Dolphins offense, it’s still unclear as to who will be in the backfield. Myles Gaskin is designated to return from IR but it’s not a guarantee that he’s able to go Sunday. His former Huskie teammate Salvon Ahmed is also not a lock to play with a sore shoulder and last week’s primary ballcarrier DeAndre Washington has a sore hamstring. This could potentially lead to a Matt Breida and Patrick Laird backfield, but I have a feeling Gaskin or Ahmed will be playing and likely getting most of the action, it depends on how each one of them responds during practice, and maybe we even see both. The other big question looming is whether Tua Tagovailoa’s thumb injury is significant enough to keep him out another game which would have our wily veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick getting another cherished start. Fitz may really like Tua but don’t think for a second that he’s not relishing every opportunity he gets to start.

Depending on who starts for the Bengals, either Allen or Finley, they will likely have Giovanni Bernard as their starting RB along with a nice trio of WR’s including former pro bowler A.J. Green, very impressive rookie Tee Higgins and team leading WR Tyler Boyd, with 72 receptions and 723 yards. Higgins is the TD leader with 5 TD receptions. This is a different offense without QB Joe Burrows and RB Joe Mixon. Bernard will share carries with former Dolphins RB Samaje Perine. On defense, Jesse Bates III is having a nice season at safety with 3 INT’s and 13 passes defensed. Pretty impressive, as he also is 2nd on the team in tackles with 75. SS Vonn Bell leads the team with 85 tackles and if we know one thing, it’s never a good sign when your safeties lead the team in tackles. DE Carlos Dunlap was traded to the Seahawks at the trade deadline and basically leaves a toothless defense behind in Cincy. DE Carl Lawson (not to be confused with M’s fave Manny Lawson) leads the Bengals with 4.5 sacks.

Well, this is the easiest game on our schedule for the rest of the season with the Chiefs, Patriots, Raiders and Bills remaining after this week. That doesn’t mean we look past our opponent this week, I know Brian Flores won’t be doing that. This is a must win for us to stay competitive for both the division crown and/or the Wild Card. Neither avenue will be easy but wins mean everything and we better get one this week. At the moment, Cleveland is the top WC team at 8-3, followed by us and Indy but the Ravens lurk just one game behind us at 6-5 along with the LV Raiders and the South division may change hands so both Indy and Tennessee are in competition for a WC spot. Right now we stand as the 6 seed above Indy but this is very fluid and can change weekly. I say we take care of our own business and win at least 10 games and we should be in the playoffs.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

He and Rowe have been a really solid tandem at S. I would like to see a couple more ints from our safeties but X seems to want them all for himself 😁

      • D's avatar D says:

Safeties aren’t going to get ints if the CB’s amd LB’s are covering well. I think thats a product of not needing them as much to have the backs of the other defenders.

Traditionally a FS is a ball hawk and the SS is more in run support

Good ole Bobby McCain! Not sure if you guys remember but I was a huge defender of good ole Bobby.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im not, though i can admit that he has played well. He still is a better slot guy than i think he is a safety, but maybe he lost a step and thats why they moved him. Safeties have it a little easier in coverage than a slot guy does. I still dont think he is the best we can do at safety but its good to see him helping us out more this year and making for a better chance at a big contract for himself.

    The AFC playoff picture.
    1. Steelers (11-0) Still in the lead for home-field advantage.
    2. Chiefs (11-1) Clinched a playoff berth.
    3. Bills (8-3) One-game lead in the AFC East.
    4. Titans (8-4) Owns the division record tiebreaker over Indianapolis.
    5. Browns (9-3) Closing in on a return to the playoffs.
    6. Dolphins (8-4) Still a chance in the AFC East.
    7. Colts (8-4) Still a chance in AFC South.
    ***
    8. Raiders (7-5) One game out in the wild card.
    9. Ravens (6-5) Currently on the outside looking in.
    10. Patriots (6-6) Tough road to a return to the playoffs.

Crazy to me the Steelers still aren’t clinched, thats nuts at 11-0

The biggest knock on McCain as a S is that he is undersized and thus not as effective in run support

It’s week to week. Every week is based on what we see from our next opponent. We could turn on the tape and see someone else running no huddle against Kansas City and getting stoned every play in which case we wouldn’t do it.

These guys enjoy playing with each other. They care about each other. They celebrate with one another in good times, they support one another in bad times. I think that’s important on a team. This is a resilient group. This is a hard working group.

“The 196 yards gained by the Bengals were the fewest for a Dolphins opponent since 2017.”

“The Dolphins have allowed just 10 combined points last two games. That last happened in November of 2002.”

“Jason Sanders could miss his next five field goals and still maintain his spot as the most accurate kicker in team history”

“Jakeem Grant’s 327 punt return yards are 85 more than the NFL’s second place return man (Gunner Olszewski).

“Tua’s the third NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl era to not throw an interception in his first five starts (minimum 100 attempts).”

” Gesicki’s nine receptions Sunday were the most by a Miami tight end since Randy McMichael in 2004.”

“Needham allowed eight receiving yards on two targets in the game, including an interception and pass breakup.”

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Five players who improved their draft stock this past weekend:

    KYLE TRASK, QB, FLORIDA
He completed 35-of-49 passes for 433 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He became the first Gators quarterback with three 400-yard passing games in a single season. After this many games last year, all of Trasks stats exceed those of Joe Burrow except for completion % which for Trask is still over 71%.

    MAC JONES, QB, ALABAMA
Trask, Jones’ skill set doesn’t check all the boxes and he isn’t the type of prospect I would invest a first-round selection on, but the season he has put together is impossible to ignore. Leading Alabama to a ninth consecutive win to start the season, this time getting revenge on LSU on the road, Jones completed 20-of-28 passes for 385 yards and four touchdown passes.

    DEVONTA SMITH, WR, ALABAMA
LSU isn’t bragging about its DBU label after the torching it took on Saturday from Smith, who hauled in eight receptions for 231 yards and three touchdowns in the Tide’s 55-17 win. Smith hauled in touchdown catches of 65, 61, and 20 yards, showcasing both his ability to win down the field and after the catch. Smith has already logged a career-high in receptions (80), receiving yards (1,305), and touchdowns (15) in just nine games so far in 2020.

    LANDON DICKERSON, C, ALABAMA
The Crimson Tide offense dominated LSU on Saturday Night to the tune of 32 first downs, 650 total yards, and 55 points while keeping Jones clean and averaging more than six yards per rush. It’s never overly sexy to talk about offensive linemen but Dickerson and the Alabama front five deserve plenty of credit for the success against LSU. Dickerson was a big-time recruit that spent his first few seasons at Florida State. While he fared well, the Seminoles were a mess offensively and he was playing out of position. Dickerson has found a home at center in Tuscaloosa and his dominant season continued against LSU. He is one of the season’s biggest risers overall.

    QUINCY ROCHE, EDGE, MIAMI

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Good stats, Stanger …. regarding Chiefs game we can sum up our chances with two words:
    Red Zone

Defensively we need to avoid BIG plays by KC … more bend but don’t break … KC is ranked 24th scoring TDs in Red Zone, Miami is ranked 18th!!!

Offensively we need to be methodical to GET to the Red Zone where KC defense is dead last in the NFL for giving up TDs.

We just might be built to play this kind of game. Denver almost did it until they started giving up the big plays in 4th qtr.

  12. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“The 31-15 combined record of Miami’s final four opponents is the most difficult remaining 4-game slate in the NFL.” FiveThirtyEight gives us a 44% chance of making the playoffs.

“Week 14 of the NFL season offers a preview of the AFC playoffs.

There are four games between AFC teams with winning records. That starts in the 1 p.m. ET slot with Kansas City and Miami. Indianapolis faces Miami in the 4:05 p.m. ET spot.”

Glad to see Perry and Bowden more involved. We need them. They might also be part of the plan moving forward. Those quick-twitch smaller receivers who help keep moving the chains moving, and could make a big play here and there. The Pats have been doing that for years. I’d like to see us add an explosive WR in the draft.

    Stupid 9ers

  61. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Watching Josh Allen shows us why Flores wants as many top shelf DBs as he can get. A ‘do it all LB’ in the draft can put our D to elite status, and the Josh Allens will be nullified. If we get a top 5-6 pick we have a shot at Parsons. If not, then go best WR available and target Owusu-Koramoah with our middle/late round pick. Then RB and center in 2nd rd. done. Depth from then on.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parsons and Waddle are who I want. Make it happen. LOL

We have the draft capital to add top prospects. This team does not need a bundle of draft picks and UDFA’s. They need difference makers to take that big step in 2021.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That said, this season is still alive and who knows what will happen? LOL

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’d add Harris to your wish list. :). I was all about Etienne for a long time, but Harris just has the vibe (and physical build) of a guy who takes over a game and can handle the punishment. Our Houston pick in early 2nd might land him. Swiss-army knife LB, WR who can separate, Henry-knock-off RB, …. oh yeah.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Rhino, Harris is a RB?

  63. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

10 yrs Flores was with Pats … despite the “Brady/Gronk” hype … Pats 1st round was dominated by defensive picks. Next most common was OL. 2nd round was where they found their best skill positions. 1st rd skill positions were not dominant in nfl.

I only say this because Flores learned from a (gag) ‘dynasty’ (at our expense).

I have a really hard time thinking a top 10 pick will be used on a skill position. Grier will surely consult Flores, but I can’t see a top 10 pick being used on a skill position (now that they have QB in place).

  64. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Tim,
honestly, I was all about Etienne. But BBM’s love of Harris and video clips made me look for more info. I have been dragged ‘kicking and screaming’ to BBM’s view. Harris could be Henry “1.5” lol

  65. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

ok. WTF became WFT beating Steelers !! but we’ll still need some help to win the division.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Don’t forget Davis on the DL too.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ve felt in the past that we had a good draft and that feeling fades by year two

      So it’s early

And let’s not forget how bad we were last year leaving those holes to fill

But early on it’s looks good

The Dolphins were committed to improving the OL last offseason
      And I’m loving the results

We have a lot of draft picks to work with
But focusing on an area has a history of paying off

So maybe these OL improvements will go beyond the next couple of years

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Usually by this point of the season we have an idea of what we have in the draft and I can’t think of a recent draft where I have seen this level of talent contributing at this high of a level that they are up and down rounds 1-7

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sheesh, I’m looking at our draft picks, and they are all major contributors except for Weaver (I don’t think he’s even on the team, right?) and Stowbridge who has had limited action.

9 out of 11 draft picks is fantastic.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess I wouldn’t call Perry a ‘major’ contributor, but he plays. I probably should have just left it alone with Ken’s statement instead of basically repeating it, lol.

      Point is-excellent draft 🙂

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It really looks like we crushed this draft even with the big swing and miss on Weaver

I really shouldn’t joke about this, but if a MLB umpire’s career was going to end this way (or any other), why the heck couldn’t it be Angel Hernandez?

  80. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d call that a good draft. Mainly cause no busts yet other than Weaver. Could biotch about no outstanding playing above where picked guys except Kindley, but that’s a real whinnney complaint given how many picks crash and burn.

Round 1, pick 5: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
Round 1, pick 18: Austin Jackson, OT, USC
Round 1, pick 30: Noah Igbinoghene, CB, Auburn
    Round 2, pick 39: Robert Hunt, G, Louisiana-Lafayette
Round 2, pick 56: Raekwon Davis, DT, Alabama
Round 3, pick 70: Brandon Jones, S, Texas
Round 4, pick 111 (from Texans): Solomon Kindley, G, Georgia
Round 5, pick 154 (from Jaguars through Steelers): Jason Strowbridge, DE, North Carolina
Round 5, pick 164 (from Eagles through Cowboys): Curtis Weaver, DE, Boise State
Round 6, pick 185: Blake Ferguson, C, LSU
Round 7, pick 246 (from Chiefs): Malcolm Perry, WR, Navy

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Should also count Bowden because he is a rookie we traded for post draft

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

His cost goes on the 2021 draft’s books….. but yeah he is here already. Not like if we had given up a 2021 pick for him at the draft we wouldn’t count him as part of the class.

I’m not sold either. But a quick release is a god given talent….. like with Marino.
    —————
Stanger, the 2.38 stat isn’t about a “quick release”: you’re talking about the time from hike to the time to get the ball out… which IS — in and of itself — impressive… albeit it shows that Tua was going to throw a short out regardless, in the huddle.

Rather, a “quick release” is the time it takes from *I’m going to throw the football* (beginning of ‘wind-up’, if you will), to final release. Example: pitching from the stretch in baseball vs not.

Tua does have a *relatively* quick release as a rook (it can get much better), but he’s not even in the same galaxy as Dan the Man.

I’m not trying to nitpick you, old friend… just trying to illustrate the fundamental difference to you. And I’m in NO WAY trying to attack Tua, who WILL become better and better!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree M13, even think a quick release is part of that timing. Glad to leave it at liked him getting the ball out quickly…. which is a good thing too.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I agree, Stanger. It’s certainly a good thing, to be sure… so long as it doesn’t lead to INTs by DBs jumping the route in the future. And THAT is where “release time” (such as Dan the Man) makes all the difference in the world, bud.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 – just liked that Tua was getting the ball out quicker than all the other QBs on Sunday save one. And he had a good day and we won. No INTs yet.

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t know what the future holds for Albert Wilson, who in my opinion, is one helluva slot option with his speed and YAC ability… and we’ve ALL seen it. IF his future is cloudy with us, and being we certainly need an infusion of Offensive talent, I’d strongly consider drafting Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama.

Tua and Devonta reunited just might be what the doctor ordered…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m beginning to believe that our Defense doesn’t need a SINGLE, STUD pass-rusher… being we have a collective and unique (hybrids) style of player on that side of the ball. As of today, I’d say we need more Offense.

Offensively, I’d say we need (in no particular order): blind-side ELITE RT (for Tua), RB, and WR.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think he will get his shot to make the roster but I am guessing we are looking to add talent and his roster spot is not guaranteed. We have slot WRs in Grant Bowden and Perry. We need a guy who is a boundary WR and a real vertical threat

    M13,

While I absolutely agree with what you said about the time the ball is snapped to the ball is thrown is entirely different than release speed, I have to disagree about Tua’s release not being in the same galaxy as Marino’s. (And let me preface this by saying I am not sold on Tua being our franchise yet.)

Check out this article about Tua’s release and arm strength. The guy really breaks it down frame by frame, and according to these metrics only one QB has ever matched Marino’s release, that is Rodgers. And only one QB has ever exceeded Marino and Rodgers, and that is Tua. He also goes to show that Tua has good arm strength, but not great (that is for Ken).

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, DeShaun Watson also matched Marino and Rodgers, I forgot that.

And Tua’s arm strength is comparable to Watson’s as well, good, not great.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just going by the eye test, once Tua decides to throw it that ball comes out pretty quick.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        My thoughts exactly.

Either Steve or D put this article up before the season started, so since Tua started playing I have kinda been watching his release with that in mind. I didn’t want to believe anyone could have a faster release than Marino, lol. But that ball zips out of there.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

There you had to go and get all scientific about it. 🙂

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, right with you on Devonta Smith! I am thinking:

1a WR Devonta Smith or Jalen Waddle
1b LB Zaven Collins or Joseph Ossai
2a RB Najee Harris or Javonte Williams
    2b OC/IOL Myers or Dickerson
3 DT Barmore or DT Slayton
    4 S Caden Sterns
    Etc.

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“His game might be best described as 40-year old Drew Brees’s arm combined with 37-year-old Michael Vick’s legs. Tua’s unbelievably accurate, he’s got the quickest release I’ve ever seen, but he also has an undeniably weak arm. His biomechanics are very similar to Mike Vick’s, and Tua is very mobile, but keep in mind as a freshman at Alabama he ran a 4.76 40-yard dash. He’s not exactly a burner.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who said this? I think those comparison’s are stupid. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s from the article above. I agree those comparisons are kinda dumb (I actually would have agreed with the Vick part, but said he has a normal Brees arm , but the blurb also lacks the context of everything he wrote about Tua, so it makes it seem like he’s just dissing him when the guy actually liked him. He saw him as the 2nd best prospect in the 2020 draft behind Burrow, but he doesn’t think he’s a generational talent.

Here’s the beginning and end of his summation which sandwich the part Rock posted:

“Medical evaluation not withstanding, Tua’s a difficult player to evaluate. When you take away the advantage of his surrounding talent, what does his game look like? I think Tua can be a really good pro, but I don’t think he’s the generational talent some are making him out to be.”

“Playing in the right system matters for every quarterback, but some may be more impervious to systems than others. I believe there are a hand full of coaches who could turn Tua into a perennial All-Pro. But there are probably three times as many coaches who could turn him into a bust by year three. The talent is obviously there, but whichever team drafts him better know what they are doing.”

All that aside, the blurb is just a summation of the guy’s opinion, which is a different aspect of the article than the breakdown of the statistical analysis and film metrics he used to calculate arm strength and release speed.

The way things are shaping up
Tim might get his lifetime draft wish

    The truest BPA ever…lol

If we go into the off-season with our biggest needs being RB and WR, which is what it looks like right now, you can add quality players at those positions on day 2 of the draft

Maybe those 2 first rounders are luxury picks
And we can just take the best player on the board irrespective of any needs

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The whole idea of the BPA is say you need a RB and WR but a prospect like Chase Young is there and he’s graded much higher than any RB or WR. You take Chase Young.

We have enough picks to take BPA and needs throughout the draft. We already have a pretty good team. We don’t need upgrades everywhere, we need impact players that make us a really good team and a contender for a championship.
