Dolphins very active before the 2021 NFL Draft

The first big mover was actually a subtraction from the roster as the Dolphins parted ways with LB Kyle Van Noy after recently (last season) signing him to a 4YR/$51M deal. That move was followed by the eventual trade between the Dolphins and the Texans which sent DE Shaq Lawson to HOU for ILB Benardrick McKinney. The Dolphins gave the Texans our 6th RD 2021 pick in exchange for their 2021 7th RD pick. Lawson played both OLB and DE for the Dolphins last season but never really hit his stride in our defense. Van Noy was brought here for his leadership and his playmaking, but the surprising rise of OLB Andrew Van Ginkel helped make Van Noy expendable. While AVG played mostly weak side and and Van Noy played primarily strong, both were interchangeable. I’m guessing the new #55 will undergo a uniform number change as the Eagles would say Ol’ 55, Jerome Baker owns that number. McKinney will definitely solidify the middle next to Baker and and the bigger (6’4 260) McKinney brings more physicality there while Baker brings the sideline to sideline quickness and speed.

In addition to McKinney, the Dolphins further solidified the run defense with the addition of DT Adam Butler. Butler was a rotational guy on the Patriots defensive line with only 12 starts in 4 seasons but he played in all but one game, and he averaged about 45% of the defensive snaps, so he had a good amount of playing time. He’s a DT that gets good penetration, with 20 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and 22 QB hits over parts of 4 NFL seasons. Unfortunately for former Dolphins DT Davon Godchaux, that most likely seals his fate and he most likely will not be returning here. (Update!) Godchaux has signed a 2 year deal with the Patriots, thanks to a couple of FMU NFL insiders.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Dolphins signed RB Malcolm Brown from the LA Rams. Brown while never a premier ballcarrier or workhorse, he brings a more physical running style than what we currently have in Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Patrick Laird. Brown was basically the 3rd cog in the Rams run game behind Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson. Brown had a career high 419 yards on 101 carries with a 4.1YPC. He also caught 23 balls for 162 yards and had 5 rushing TD’s. I believe this still leaves the door wide open to draft a RB, even an early pick as I think we still need a talent upgrade there. The Dolphins just recently signed former Texans WR Will Fuller to a 1 year deal. Honestly, I never wanted any part of Fuller because although he has the speed we need, he’s a guy that has a tough time staying on the field, and considering the fact that we already have that in DeVante Parker, that doesn’t give our young QB any kind of stability when guys are constantly missing time. In any case, the Dolphins do get a guy who averages on the high end of YPR (14.9) overall but a career high 16.7YPR last season along with 8 TD’s. Also keep in mind that both Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson are set to return this season after opting out due to COVID last season. Wilson and Hurns together count less than $8M against the cap so don’t count them out just yet.

We didn’t get Joe Thuney, David Andrews or even re-sign Ted Karras, so the Dolphins decided to gamble on former ravens C Matt Skura. Much like Fuller was to me, Skura wasn’t really on my radar. Skura was a 4 year started for a stout Ravens O-line, but he has had injury issues, most recently having a devastating injury 11/19 in which he tore just about anything and everything in his knee including his ACL/PCL/MCL and dislocating his knee cap. To Skura’s credit, he toughed it out last season starting 12 games and playing in 15. As to whether he’s an upgrade over Ted Karras remains to be seen, but Skura was definitely the less expensive option. It’s once again, possible we draft a center with Creed Humphrey, Landon Dickerson Josh Myers, and Trey Smith available. Dickerson and Humphrey could go as early as 2nd RD but the others should be available in the middle rounds.

There are rumors still swirling linking former Seahawks RB Chris Carson and the Dolphins. While I have no problem with bringing in Carson, in my mind at least it would have made the signing of Malcolm Brown unnecessary, but Brown at $1.75M hardly breaks the bank. If we do get Chris Carson, that would almost certainly turn our attention away from drafting a RB early in this draft, meaning no Najee Harris, Javonte Williams or Travis Etienne.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

    Tim,
Hell, these players’ parents are younger than me, but I don’t know why ya gotta bring up age, ya fucker. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re mentioning old school stuff. You need special talents on both sides of the ball that impact games. Not being focused on specific positional skill sets. The game has become about playmakers. Meaning when you have top picks. You can fill the fundamental roles with 2nd tier players.

  2. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I’ve said for years that it’s about the players and argue with people around here almost every year about not trading out of the top 10-15 spots….including you! Lol

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded back from #18 for RB Javonte Williams. Get some more picks and still get a good prospect.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s the first time I’ve heard of such a proposition… and it feels right(!), but only under once circumstance (IMO, of course)… we address pass-rusher with our 1st pick.

Yes, that would mean Micah Parsons with our 1st pick, in this very deep WR draft class, to take one in the 2nd or 3rd round. And I’m cool with either Najee or Javonte.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m a big fan of both Parsons and Williams. I believe there are plenty of receivers available down the road. If we can land Humphrey and Ossai or something like that in the top 50 that’s winning!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Can’t worry about RB or trading out of 18 until WR and OLB are taken care of.

Plenty of guys at 18 to consider for OLB.

I consider Lawson more Edge setter and less OLB, could be why he’s gone, because I think we need more of smaller, faster guy, with more quickness.

Parsons fits our OLB need to a Tee, as does Owusu and a couple of others

  4. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Pp’s draft didn’t make this page, but I loved the all in on building a killer D.

I do think RB as is, WR unit is a busload, OL with no depth or more as holes.

Can we get another 1st round pick somewhere? Lmao.

  5. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

TB showed you how to beat KC and BB. You don’t think Flores is all in on that?

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Man, WAY too many (not just here) are sleeping on Azeez Ojulari, EDGE, Georgia.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d be willing to bet that he goes before Greg Rousseau when it’s all said and done.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Edge is not a priority on D imo. It’s one dimensional solution. We need more than that on D.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

EDGE is the only thing we lack on Defense. That stated, we don’t necessarily have to draft an “EDGE” player. For weeks now, I’m saying either play Parsons on the EDGE, or as Tim had stated even better, have Parsons play the Elephant/Joker role as Jason Taylor had played.

Kill two birds with one stone, knowing that Parsons will eventually become our #1 ILB.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Disagree, there are multiple ways to cover the Edge. Multiple sets and attacks minimize a true beed at Edge, imo.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You know I don’t like him, but he may work out. I think he’s too sleepy, like fuckface.

I just think he’s too risky

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s all good to have a difference of opinion, man! I respect that.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When I watch his tape, his pursuit is bad, like he doesn’t want to break a nail, then on another play, when he whiffed on a tackle, he flew back and got in on a tackle.

Shows me he’s not real motivated.

When I played basketball, I was always the guy, that got back on D after a turnover. He’d be the selfish guy not getting back, and left cherry picking under his own basket. He plays football that way too

  7. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I just don’t think we’re stout enough on D. I think Flores thinks we are not stout enough on D. He got rid of dead wood.

  8. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We need a stout D, enough said. We are not that, for sure. We have to deal with some offense talent un the AFC. Deal with it.

It will pay off in.the SB.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We gotta be able to stop Allen one week and the next week keep up with him on O.

Receiver at 6, then Parsons or Owusu at 18. Parsons likely won’t be their, but Owusu should be

23 Javonte Williams HB • North Carolina
34 Azeez Ojulari ED • Georgia
    36 Wyatt Davis G • Ohio State
50 Alim McNeill DI • North Carolina State
81 Levi Onwuzurike DI • Washington
    146 Talanoa Hufanga S • USC
156 Tamorrion Terry WR • Florida State
    231 Trey Hill C • Georgia
258 Ian Book QB • Notre Dame

  11. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

81? Lmao. I stopped at the first 3. Nice.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They say teams mostly draft for future years. For example, since Fuller is only signed for 1 year, following that logic we need to draft a WR, like Waddle, and a replacement for Gesicki, in the event they aren’t resigned.

Pitts could be a replacement for both, if we don’t care about stretching the field.

I expect both will resign, with the cap going up, but that’s just an example of how an FO thinks

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

South Carolina Pro Day featured: CB Jaycee Horn, CB Israel Mukuamu, WR Shi Smith, OG Sadarius Hutcherson, LB Ernest Jones

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we do go WR at #6, I do hope it is Devonta Smith. The dude has serious football IQ.

I am not biting on needing a WR who can take the top off a defense in the 1st round. There are other blazers who can take the top off farther down if you want that like: Dyami Brown, Anthony Schwartz, Marquez Stevenson, etc.

IMO, Smith is the best all round receiver in this class.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

#6 is a sweet spot in the draft. Nobody will call you out for that pick when everyone knows QB will be top 3. Plenty to choose from, follow your board. #3 was a valuable pick.🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Think we should’ve ended up with a 2022 1st and a 2021 2nd.

Grier got shafted, unless the 49ers are under 500 the next 2 years

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

read earlier (I’ll try to find it again) comparing both of our trades with previous teams moving down as much as 17 spots. The ‘final’ 3 moves down … regardless of how we got there … garnered more in return than teams moving back those 17 spots.

I think we gotta look at this not as two trades but one complex trade for Fins to maximize what they can get for staying at no worse than #6.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, the 49ers results have nothing to do with it. We moved back three spots and gained a 3rd, 5th and 1st. Not sure what you’re hung up on? The NFL world is praising the Dolphins trade and my family and friends who are Giants fans are saying the same thing. Yet you’re tangled up in blues. LOL

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Rhino you can’t compare how many spots you moved down,, you have to compare the points from the draft value chart to find like trades..

Our trade to 12 was 1000pts, the same as the RG3 trade, here’s what they got the Rams received Washington’s No. 6 and No. 39 overall picks in 2012, its No. 22 pick in 2013 and its first-round pick in 2014.

I didn’t expect to get that, but much better than we did, since it was for a QB. We almost got even draft value chart comp.

Are they praising Grier, because of the color of his skin?

And we gave up a 4th Tim.

The jets went from 6 to 3 in 2018 and gave up 3 2nds, the equivalent to over 1100 pts.

For going back 3 spots we lose 3 spots in the 1st and about 30 spots from the 4th to the 5th, and have to wait until next year to get the 3rd, and 2 years to get the first, why is that a good trade?

The part about SF being under 500 had to do with how we came out after all was said and done.

Don’t you think we would’ve given Philly the SF 2022 1st, if we thought the 49ers were going to have a better season than us?

It’s not the 49ers results Tim, that matter now, it’s the expectation

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have a dream… Micah Parsons, Creed Humphrey, Javonte Williams and Joseph Assai.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Funny when a 2023 1st round pick is debated over a 2021 4th round pick. Nothing has changed other than we can basically make any trade we want and still have plenty of draft capital in the present and future.🙂

  26. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

even though you have a lot of draft capital, you still have to pick the right guys.
    2019 picks
Round 1 (13th overall) Christian Wilkins, DL, Clemson
    Round 2 Josh Rosen trade
Round 3 (78th overall) — Michael Deiter, OL, Wisconsin
Round 5 (151st overall) — Andrew Van Ginkel, LB, Wisconsin
Round 6 (202nd overall) — Isaiah Prince, T, Ohio State
Round 7 (233rd overall) — Chandler Cox, RB, Auburn
    round 7 miles gaskin

Wilkins, i guess ok, he certainly isn’t bad but i’m not jumping up and down about him either.
josh rosen trade was a complete disaster, we could have taken dk metcalf with that pick.
deiter, 3rd rnd pick, cant crack into starting line up, i’d say below par pick
van ginkle, great pick, i’m jumping up and down about him
prince who? no longer on the team.
    cox was waived
    gasking solid pick

out of 7 draftees only 3 solid picks not good

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

too early to evaluate last years draft but you have to admit our #5 over all last year was extremely disappointing.

didn’t think iggy lived up to his draft status.

hunt was disappointing, 2nd rnder and kindley beat him out

weaver no longer with the team.

i hope grier can do a better job picking talent this year

i hear SF moved up to get Mac Jones not Justin Fields.
they may have got jones at 12 if that rumor is true

  29. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Steve,

People think it was a good trade because it was. The RG3 trade was the worst trade in several decades so we should look at other ones. Jets- threes 2nds is not the same as 1st rounders just like that antiquated chart doesn’t give true value for today’s NFL. For one thing, you can’t really guesstimate where any future pick will be drafted.

We got a 2023 1st, a 5th this year, and a 3rd next year to draft where we want to draft. That’s good value. Grier abused BOB and turned one trade into a smorgasbord. As others have stated, we basically are still at #3 for any other player than a QB. That is awesome.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We got a 5, gave up a 4th, and 2 future picks to still draft the same player, that’s great, but don’t tell me we got value on those trades.

The reason the media loves it is, because of where the puck came from, the Tunsil trade.

If you could trade down every pick and still draft the same player, you would and the draft would be loved by all.

I loved that we traded down, but I don’t love the value we got back.

The draft value chart is there for 1 reason, to setup a baseline for trades, if you didn’t get the pts in return, then you didn’t get value.

When trading for future 1sts I don’t apply the rule that a 2022 1st equals a 2021 2nd, because 1st round picks have more value.

When you trade out of 3 you should get some benefit in the current year or you need to at least beat the value chart

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was only 400 pts to drop from 6 to 12, and it wasn’t for a QB, you could argue Philly got a better deal than we did in our 2 trades.

I said, before the trade, I’d be pissed, if we drafted at 3, so I’m happy we moved down, just saying we didn’t get good value

Was kind of hearing same thing. They didn’t move up for Fields but were afraid the Pats might move in front of them for Mac Jones.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Jones sucks for SF, he’ll be a statue behind an ordinary pass blocking line.

What made him look good last year was, he has prototypical size and pretty good arm strength and accuracy, not great.

      He’s basically Jim Druckenmiller.

When comparing him to Tua, his strength is Tua’s weakness, that size. Playing on that team he didn’t need the intangibles Tua possess. Tua needed them, because of his lack of size.

This is the season for rumors, so take what you hear…

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

many scouts would likely disagree, they think Jones is a NFL QB, and a good QB to select at the 12 position, according to some mock drafts.

i dont know enough about him, except hes not on the Dolphins radar, but he looks damn good on film, im sure someone in a QB hungry league will take him

  34. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

In recent weeks, U.S. automakers have been hit hard by a global shortage of semiconductors. It’s the latest problem stemming from America’s over-reliance on a wide range of industrial imports. With the COVID-19 pandemic having disrupted global supply chains, U.S. automakers are now scrambling to find adequate supplies of the computer chips that run everything from power steering and navigation systems to collision sensors. The issue is serious enough that both GM and Ford have halted production.

The Biden administration is racing to address the problem — along with other serious supply chain vulnerabilities. The president has already issued an executive order identifying key import dependencies, including semiconductors. It’s a promising start, but the United States must rapidly rebuild its domestic chipmaking industry in order to lessen the nation’s dependence on overseas suppliers.
    News press more

i hate to break the bad news to ya Steve, but the US is so reliant on foreign goods that we cant even make cars anymore, Ford and GM shut down production.

the problem has NOT been taken care of by anyone, yet, however Biden is attempting it

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can’t fix the damage done in mfg the last 30 years in 4 years, when everything is a fight.

It takes administration after administration to fix it.

Biden doesn’t do anything other than read off of a teleprompter (his voice is the voice of the deep state, he’s a puppet) and say stupid shit.

No one believes he’s all there enough to be running the country

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

i agree that it cant all be fixed in 4 years, but You seem to think Biden can fix it in a few months?
i know You dont like Him, but My point was only that US manufacturing, has NOT returned and is costing the nation now

the boat and all the waves it made , illustrates the point, painfully

its a problem that corporations made, and will fight Biden, like they fought all the other admins, he may fail, like the others did, but if he does, we all pay the price for it, like we have been since reagonomics

somebody has to tackle this or it wont get fixed

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Biden can’t fix it, he just has to keep us in the right direction, but he can’t, because he’s compromised by China.

Tariffs are necessary, and you can’t worry about their short term effects. Biden wants to get rid of the tariffs.

What did I say to make you think I said Biden could fix it in a few months?

Anyways, thanks for the civil conversation

good convo, and Bidens challenge is so big , good chance he will fail like the others did, SMH
just hoping for our sake that it gets done, the sooner the better

but the tarriffs are a horrible idea, thats just a tax on US business, the falsehood was beijing was paying them, but US corporations paid them at their point of sale, they had to pay the DHS, and had to eat it or pass it on to US consumers

His Pro Day 40 time was not as good as I would like to see (4.61). But dude is a “football player” and a heck of an athlete. He played QB, RB, WR, and Safety in HS and excelled at all.

“In 2020, Hufanga was a consensus All-American, First Team All-Pac-12, and the 2020 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Leading the Pac-12 in solo tackles and interceptions, he proved to be a force. Not just as a tackler, but as a playmaker in coverage as well.
He had an interception in four consecutive games in the middle of the shortened 2020 season. In his three years as a USC safety, he had 11 games with double-digit tackles.”

    Three year stats at USC: 203 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 16.5 TFL, 4 FF, 4 INT’s, 12 PD’s.

The Miami Dolphins, now picking 6th, get to play a little bit of defense with the NFL Draft order — primarily with their division rivals from New England apparently going all-in for the short-term. Many speculated that the New England Patriots were gearing up to trade up for a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. But that outlook is suddenly much more challenging with the Dolphins once again sitting right in the middle of the top-10 picks.

They also suggest we might not be done trading back, if the board falls right.

If we actually did trade down to 6, to block the cheats, and move down to say 8, I’ll consider the overall value excellent.

To say we moved to 6, because we targeted someone their may not be accurate.

If we do move back again to 8 and Carolina takes a QB, we would’ve singlehandedly manipulated the top of the draft to move as many as 5 QBs to the top of the draft, blocking NE, getting comp, while getting a great prospect at a lower cap hit than at 3.

If Atl goes QB, it’s a no brainer to try to drop to 8 or even 9.

Trading back again would be another reason why we made the Friday trades well before the draft, to give time to setup more evil genius.

The media will lose their shit, if we drop down again

The media can say what they like about Jones, that doesn’t make it so.

Here’s how I see these lazy SOBS doing their job, one top guy says something good about Jones, then the rest of them are all in, its human nature.

Last year the same media said, Tua has a big arm, and that was the consensus here too, then I said, he had a noodle arm and it made people take a look and come to their own conclusion.

Same thing happens around the country, one media personality will say something and the rest will follow.

I saw a mock that had Atl taking Surtain, that would be almost as good as them taking a QB and would allow us to trade back to 8 or 9.

They had lots of teams come back on them, it would be a good pick, but I’ve heard the 49ers were also talking to them about pick 4 and couldn’t get anywhere, that tells me they have someone in mind either Sewell or QB

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Agreed. I wrote a few days ago when I went all in on Parsons (lol) that the best thing for Fins now was Atl going QB or CB, cuz Cincy absolutely goes Sewell (or Burrow starts asking for a trade lol). Now check the interest of Carolina and Denver about moving up for Jones. Even if for one additional pick this year, Fins at #8 are basically in the same position as they had been at #6, at #9 they simply concede that 2 of 4 players they like may be gone.
The only thing that disrupts this thinking is IF we have one specific player that FO can’t live without.

Great ‘nerdy’ read about Draft Efficiency 2010-2019 (2020 class not included as this was written in June 2020).

Evaluates/Ranks all teams on 1) Draft Capital, 2) Draft Return, 3) Draft Return vs Capital
You can click each column to see how Miami ranks for each individual year, or the cumulative last 10 yrs, or the cumulative last 5 years.

Return vs Capital is probably the best way to evaluate a team’s draft success (comparatively).
For the 10 years Miami ranked 15th. For the last 5 years Fins ranked 12th.

Grier’s first draft in 2016 was 100%, which is the ‘break even’ league average for the comparisons.
    2017 was a disastrous 86%
Then it seems Grier found his groove 2018 118% which ranks 6th.
2019 was 119% (the rookie class during Flores’ first year). Although only ranked 13th it was still well above the league average in a draft that had exactly 1/2 of teams below league average.

I would love to see 2020 rankings and will keep an eye for updates. It does feel like our comparative draft results are Trending UP ! (as if Grier found a way to keep Ross’ opinions out of the draft room). lol

I can see Cincy going with Sewell and taking Burrows’ other LSU receiver in the second in Terrace Marshall. Chase gets a lot of hype from that championship season. That was Chase’s only productive season on a team with an incredible roster. With Chase and Jefferson, Marshall still caught 13 TD’s that season. Marshall caught 10 TD’s last year in a shortened season on a depleted LSU team. Marshall is also 3″ taller than Chase.

Will be interesting to see their measurements at the LSU Pro Day on March 31.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. IMO, Marshall is the real deal. He had great production last year on an offense that lost, at least, 8 starters to the NFL (QB, RB, 2 WR’s, TE and 3 OL). That’s a lot!

    https://www.milehighreport.com/2020/4/23/21232643/success-rate-of-first-round-wide-receivers-this-century
    Some highlights:
If you use first-team All Pro selections, then only nine of the 77 first-round picks have qualified and only eight of those were as wide receivers.

If you use first team Pro Bowl selections, then 21 of these first-round wide receivers have done that.

19 of the 77 wide receivers taken in the first round this century have or had fewer than 100 career receptions in the NFL.

So let’s focus on the 2015 NFL class of wide receivers. That was supposed to be a very good year for WR talent.

There were 34 wide receivers taken that year in the draft. Only two have made the Pro Bowl and only one, Cooper, as a wide receiver. Tyler Lockett made it as a returner. Lockett was also the All Pro returner that season. Of those six wide receivers taken in the first, three of them have never been a starter – Kevin White, Breshad Perriman and Phillip Dorsett.

Some great points this morning. The odds of finding the best at anything in the NFL are at best 50/50. You still want people who either gave elite measurable or tape with your top picks.

With the limited knowledge we have, is Pitts elite? Shouldn’t he become elite? I’d say yes and if he never meets that standard is it my bad drafting skill or him not taking his opportunity? Like Isiah Wilson. He’s the one one who primarily fucked up. He looked good for the free work at school but didn’t care about an easy fortune in the NFL. Never would have expected it.

I’d still pick Chase, Pitts, Smith, Sewell or Parsons at 3, 6, 8, or 9 rather than some lesser known prospect.

As of RIGHT NOW, today, 3/29/21… I think Micah Parsons is my new #1 overall target for our Miami Dolphins. Here’s why…

    1) He checked all the boxes at his Pro-Day, he’s been taking things VERY SERIOUSLY (unlike Greg Rousseau)
    2) We go back to the tape after the Combine (<– non-existent this year) and Pro-Days… Parsons shows it on his tape
    3) Not only can he play EDGE, he can blitz from any LB position (Elephant/Joker!!!)
    4) Solid tackler, heat-seeking missile (sorry that we disagree, Randy)
    5) Game-changer
    6) 3-down player, and he's going to be on the field 95% of the time
    7) Fundamental understanding of the running game, being he was a former RB

Now, then… I need Steve Ross to sign off on him!

I think his part of the scandal was, that he was the big name to give it legs, if he did something sexually offensive, he would’ve been part of the lawsuit.

Honestly, I had been the opposite of you. I placed a LOT of hope in the likes of a Rousseau, knowing he’s a natty DE… I definitely wanted a natty DE. My tune is quickly changing after seeing some of the these Pro-Days, meaning the best EDGEs out there are clearly natty LBs.

Gotta roll with the punches, and thus, our best chances of getting an EDGE comes from the LB position this year.

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Trying to watch how our DL lined up last year, and it doesn’t really matter, if we’re 3-4 or 4-3 or something else, as far as what type of ends we use.

Sometimes Ogbah lines up with his hand down and sometimes not, but usually in the same position.

Sometimes we have an NT, a lot of the time not.

Bottom line is we just put guys that play multiple positions out there and let them go to work.

Do we end an Edge, DE, or an OLB? Easy answer is yes, just get the best passrusher available, that can play multiple positions.

Rousseau doesn’t seem to fit what we do, but if we draft him Flores knows better than I do.

I still think we did the deal now because we wanted to be sure we didn’t get stuck at #3. If we got to draft day and the Jest decided they wanted to trade down, the had all the leverage to beat us to the punch, and our odds of getting stuck at #3 go up.

And who do we select at #3 that we can’t select at #6? Basically no one. This deal ensured we got some compensation and still get whatever player we want.

    MF13,
I actually watched Parsons play a couple times. I didn’t just watch highlight film…where you don’t get to see the bad plays….or read somebody’s assessment of him, like most around here. He does not always make the play on inside running plays because he’s undisciplined at times. He will run to a spot or overrun a play because he’s not breaking down and reading the play correctly. At least that’s what it looked like to me. I think in one of the Iowa games he only had 3 or 4 tackles. I evaluate him as an ILB because that’s what he played. Yes, they moved him around, but he was an ILB. If you’re gonna play ILB, you need to make the correct reads and not be running yourself out of position.
    ***
I certainly don’t think it’s anything to be overly concerned about, but it will be magnified in the NFL because his speed won’t be enough to compensate if he’s taking wrong steps at that level. If they plan on playing him as an OLB, it won’t be as big of a concern. He’s a really good prospect, so it’s not a deal breaker or anything. He could really be a nice asset to this amoeba-type defense with his flexibility. He’d probably be my first choice if we draft defense.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

All good, man! Always alright to disagree, and I know I’m not always right. But I think we agree that Parsons could be a mismatch nightmare for our Defense. Yes, he’ll KILL IT as an OLB/EDGE player for us in his initial years, before moving back inside.

He’s a young man who can still get better but he has elite potential. We haven’t drafted him yet but whoever does gets a big time LB. I’ve been high on him for months now. His hazing accusations are not enough to derail his career. That ends in the NFL.

    Dropping back to 8 is 200pts to 9 is 250pts. Carolina’s 3rd is 225pts and Denver’s is 235, and about 500 for their 2nds

Draft points don’t mean shit to me, it’s about hitting your picks. Sometimes homework works, sometimes you don’t do enough homework, and sometimes no matter how much homework you do, you still fuck it up. Lol!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s besides the point. The point was a 3rd is a starting point of what you can get in return to drop a couple of spots

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes but we have a lot to work with. Grier and Flores are tied at the hip. It’s go time!

  83. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lol…the point is about the points. I changed the subject, the point is about the pick.

A 3 pick is supposedly more valuable than a 6 pick, because of the points. Who was the dick we picked at 3, jordan somebody? Great value moving up, horrible pick. Then MFF. Top pick, value? I think we got another pick, but it wasn’t a 1st rounder if i recall.

It’s the pick, not the points. That’s my only point. The more picks the greater chances of getting it right.

The points are just a capitalistic view of the value without knowing the company. Just my 2 cents.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Other than a few prospects the points or order doesn’t mean much. It’s about play on the field. Names always look good on paper.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

When you pick in the top 10, you need to pick a starter, bpa, at a need position. We have that luxury this year, last year, and hopefully next year. It’s about the picks, position, not in trade points. Points are just a gauge of “fairness”. Lol.

    Phish

I see you just lost and I raise you my list of 2021 pro bowl wrs who were once first round picks

    DeAndre Hopkins
    Julio Jones
    Mike Evans
    Amari Cooper

What’s really interesting is that all those guys were also going n the pro bowl roster in 2019

In 2018 you can add AJ Green and Larry Fitzgerald to the list of former first rounders

Dominant Wide Receivers can change an offense and be a QB’s best friend
Which is exceptionally important when you are bringing your 2nd year guy around

I actually think Jamarr Chase might be the best WR to come out since Julio Jones

He crushed a lot of nfl caliber corners in college including our very own Iggy
Chase is going to be dominant in the nfl

I haven’t felt so good about a prospect at WR since DeAndre Hopkins

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think we are nicely positioned to bring in a handful of long term starters over the next couple years. This roster is far from set, but we have plenty of draft capital to address it. In a rebuild like we’ve done, I’ve always felt year 3 is when you hope to be in the playoffs and year 4 is when you actually want to be a legitimate contender. I know some folks think that’s too long. Lol
    ^^^
I like how the first couple years have gone. I don’t agree with everything, but overall I think they’ve done pretty good. The exciting part for me is that I think this team is still not even close to playing as well as they can. A few more big time contributors on the roster, and we are that much closer. I will admit, if we don’t make the playoffs next year, it will be disappointing. Frankly, a lot hinges on Tua.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua is a huge part of all of this and I’m excited about him.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This isn’t the 70s, rosters are never set these days, you just hope you have enough in some areas to carry others.

We get Pitts and we may be able to outscore teams

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Pitts is a unique talent. I don’t even think about him being a TE. He’s a scoring weapon.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s only a TE in that he can play lined up on the line and help with run blocking, so more valuable, than a traditional WR

  86. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just read something I’ve never heard before, but sounds reasonable, so I’m going to assume it’s true.

The article said the way teams value future picks is by assuming they’re pick 16 one round later per year.

Our trade with SF then had a value of 635pts to us, 35pts higher than the draft value chart.

The Philly trade cost us 442pts or 42pts higher than the draft value chart

    From Crabbs

No. 18 overall — DE Azeez Ojulari, Georgia Bulldogs
Ojulari may have the most complete resume of the top pass rushers in the 2021 class. The challenge with Ojulari is that he’s not necessarily an ideal fit from a traits perspective as a defensive end in Brian Flores’ defense; so he may have to play a rush linebacker role similar to Andrew Van Ginkel and Vince Biegel if the Dolphins pegged him for the roster at No. 18 overall.

This is why I don’t think Rousseau is a fit either. I’m looking for a more pure LB to play on the outside.

Flores likes the smaller do everything types, that rush the passer, drop in coverage and can play different spots.

I think Lawson didn’t fit either

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is extremely detailed which lends a lot of verisimilitude to her story, and she is not involved in the suits. That dude is a complete dirtbag. I’m sorry I ever defended him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I never really defended him, but had doubts about the lawsuits. Pretty damn hard to after this story, especially with SI corroborating social media posts.

He could be facing criminal charges, if they take that route.

Watson, Watson, Watson…what are you doing?

  93. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyrod must be feeling pretty good about starting for the Texans this year.

Peyton Manning had massage therapy issues as well, so it isn’t hard to believe this story

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

These guys see a lot of physical therapists, masseuses, etc…. to help with the toll on the damage their body takes in the game

But that doesn’t sound like what Watson had in mind when he was dry humping the air on a Masseuse’s table

That story is a lot more credible than the others bc it’s not some Instagram model he flew to Houston, it’s a legit masseuse

Watson is going to end up being suspended

I thought for a time, he might just be being shamed for soliciting sex….but that story in that article is potentially criminal sexual assault

Don’t know if it’s true, am I’m he distant to give volume of accusations too much weight – but that woman’s story takes it to a different level in my opinion

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yep, and the social media posts are backed up by SI.

Parts of the story, that are backed up, like him reaching out to her again, then once she said she’d see him again, but it had to be professional, and him not booking are very telling

  94. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Cethan Carter having 2.7m in dead money, he’ll be on the team, mostly on STs, but I’d think that likely is the end of Laird, especially if we draft an RB

  95. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There is, after all, a reason the Miami special teams have been as good as any in the NFL in 2020.

    The rankings prove it:

The Dolphins rank first in the league in punt return average (13.9) and kickoff return average allowed (16.8); they are second in punt return average allowed (4.3); and they’re fifth in field goal percentage (96.0).

The Dolphins have had their share of big special teams plays not involving Sanders, with the two that stand out being Jakeem Grant’s punt return for a touchdown in the victory against the Rams and Andrew Van Ginkel’s punt block two weeks later against the Chargers.

Arguably the Dolphins’ three main contributors on special teams this season have been offseason acquisitions Clayton Fejedelem and Kavon Frazier and 2019 December pick-up Mack Hollins. Another key contributor has been long-snapper Blake Ferguson, who the Dolphins selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Fejedelem and Frazier were elected as special teams captains for 2020, while Hollins is the team’s nominee for the Pro Bowl among special-teamers for his work as the gunner (outside player running down the field first to cover punts).

Since we value STs so much, it’s hard to believe these 3 don’t make the team, and Grant

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Flores realizes there’s 3 units to a football team, each as valuable as the other, and it’s cheaper to fill ST slots with studs, than the other 2 units.

Games last year, where we struggled with field position we struggled overall
