Dolphins News and Why I Miss the NFL Combine

“The Underwear Olympics” as some people call it. Regardless of that smear, I feel like the combine has its place, and just like any piece of information, if you’re doing your analysis correctly, it’s another piece of data you use to form your final report, not the only piece. The problem of not having a NFL Combine is the information you get from Pro Days, which are not sanctioned by the NFL, can be slanted, or maybe I should just say ARE slanted. Each college program wants their athletes to succeed because it helps their program succeed. It seems like all the top WR prospects that actually ran at their Pro Day ran sub 4.4 times. It’s not impossible that it’s true, but more than likely those hand held timers (homers) shaved a bit to make that happen. I like when each player is running on the same strip of turf and timed by the same guys and called out if they lean a little too forward or don’t start from the right position. Geez, these guys don’t even wear shirts anymore! Will they be running in jock straps soon, or maybe without them? I suspect that next year we’ll be back to the good ole combine as it was and they will have to wear shorts, shirts and those dreaded heavy numbers on the shirts that most likely easily add a few tenths of a second to all timed events.

Now on to Dolphins news, even if it’s old news. The Dolphins were involved in 2 trades, likely synchronized trades with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The net result of both trades for the 2021 draft is that the Miami Dolphins will now pick at #6 in RD1 instead of #3, but we have acquired no further compensation in this draft. That compensation doesn’t arrive until 2022 and 2023. We still have picks 6, 18, 36, 50, 81, 156, 231 and 258. Definitely top heavy with two selections in each of the first 2 rounds and no 4th RD selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or trade back and either lose a pick or gain a pick here and there. The most important thing is finding players that make your team better, no matter when you are selecting. We have flexibility and draft capital to get what we want, so now we hope that we want is on target. The Dolphins have also signed DT John Jenkins to a 1 year contract. Jenkins last played DT/DE for the Dolphins in 2019 and spent 2020 with the Chicago Bears.

Offense or defense? Which side gets the first pick? I still believe it’s offense, but I’m not convinced it’s DeVonta Smith or Kyle Pitts. If we do go WR I think it’s going to be Ja’Marr Chase. If we go OL I think it’s either going to be Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. A lot of you seem to be on the Parson’s train but I don’t think we’re going there. If I were GM, priority #1 would be helping Tua become the QB that can take this team deep into the playoffs. I personally believe that Tua will be a better QB regardless of the players we bring in because he’s a winner and he’s working so hard to be the best he can be, but adding talent around him makes that concept closer to reality. Even if Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson came back to a level close to their previous best, can you count on either of them to finish the season? Both were out all last season and have a lot of catching up to do to get back into football shape. Can DeVante Parker ever have a full season where he’s healthy and basically the same for Will Fuller? Can you lean on Jakeem Grant as a WR and not just an electric return man? Can TE Mike Gesicki really get to the level of a Travis Kelce or Darren Waller? I think he can but that would require him being a much bigger part of the offense, and over his first 3 seasons, he’s yet to eclipse 100 or more targets in a season. Compared to the aforementioned Kelce and Waller, both had 145 targets last season and although both had less targets in 2019, 136 and 117 respectively, each still topped 100 easily. So does that mean TE/WR Kyle Pitts is more likely? If it were me, I’d go WR all the way, we have a really nice TE corps right now with Gesicki, Smythe (who improved last season as a pass catcher), Shaheen, Cethan Carter and Chris Myarick. Smythe is a solid blocker and Shaheen is another big bodied TE that caught 3 TD’s last season. When I look at the WR corps, unfortunately I keep coming up with more questions than answers. Parker, Fuller, Williams, Hurns, Wilson, Bowden, Perry, Grant, and Hollins. Who is the one guy in that bunch that you can count on? Realistically, the answer is none of the above. That’s why my best guess is Chase, and not Smith. I think we need a reliable target, one who has ability but also has availability. I do think that Smith’s size is going to keep him off our roster and the huge consolation prize after Smith who is truly an elite route running WR is Ja’Marr Chase. Mark it down folks, that’s my pick and I believe it will be our pick as well.

OK, I traded down from #18 to #25. May not get 3 picks like I did but would have been happy with just their 2nd and 3rd.

6 Kyle Pitts TE • Florida
25 Zaven Collins LB • Tulsa
33 Javonte Williams HB • North Carolina
    36 Carlos Basham Jr.ED • Wake Forest
45 Jabril Cox LB • LSU
    50 Landon Dickerson C • Alabama
65 Tylan Wallace WR • Oklahoma State
    81 Talanoa Hufanga S • USC
156 Bobby Brown III DI • Texas A&M
231 Ian Book QB • Notre Dame
    258 Josh Ball T • Marshall
    —————-
    LOVE IT!!!

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah that trade ain’t happening. LOL

      We’re not getting two 2’s and a 3rd to trade back 7 spots from #18 to 25.

      • mf13ss says:

To me, it’s more about the players that BBM is targeting. That guy KNOWS his $#!t when it comes to the players!

      • Tim Knight says:

I do like the Safety Talanoa Hufanga though.

      • Tim Knight says:

That’s cool but come on with that trade, the value just isn’t there. I think the simulators are really bad with trades.

  2. mf13ss says:

This is my DREAM Draft for our Phins…

    R1P6: Kyle Pitts OR Ja’Marr Chase (1a and 1b)
    R1P18: Micah Parsons
R2P4: Najee Harris OR Javonte Williams (1a and 1a… that’s not a typo on 1a’s)

    • Tim Knight says:

I’d take that right now but I don’t think Parsons gets past the Pats. We think about him in our defense well it’s the same for the Pats, and they loaded up on offense in FA.

    • The Flying Pig says:

Chase – parsons – Williams would be my dream
Pitts – parsons – Harris is still worthy of serious celebration

But if parsons is offf the board at 18, then what happens?

To me that’s the real unanswered questions of the draft

It would be crazy to go Chade/Pitts at 6 and then Harris at 18 and then look for your edge guy at 36

In that scenario maybe Joesph Ossai is on the board – he’s one of my favorites

      • Tim Knight says:

I see a lot of mocks have us taking Edge Greg Rousseau at #18 because he has so much upside. They say he’s a little stiff at times but when you’re almost 6-7 that’s expected. JT was a bit stiff and upright too at 6-6 but that worked out well for us. The difference is JT was drafted at 235, Rousseau is already 255-260.

That’s cool but come on with that trade, the value just isn’t there. I think the simulators are really bad with trades.
    ————-
100% agreed! These simulators are outrageous as it pertains to trades.

  4. mf13ss says:

I’m about trading R1P18 and say, R2P18 (pick #50), in order to move up for Micah Parsons.

We’d retain R2P4, in order to get our RB.

    • mf13ss says:

Move in front of the Patsies* and take Micah Parsons.

    • Tim Knight says:

I just thought the same thing after posting and seeing this. LOL

That’s what we’d have to do. But that’s why having extra picks like we do is such a good thing. It allows you to target and makes moves for coveted players. I have no problem with that because I think we need more special talent, not a boatload of players. Fans always want 10+ picks to play with but it’s time for us to add difference makers, we have solid depth throughout the team.

  5. Tim Knight says:

M13, if we came away with Pitts or Chase, Parsons, and Harris or Williams, I’m good. We just changed the dynamic of or team.

  6. Krishna says:

    Lmao!

  7. bailbondmike says:

That’s cool but come on with that trade, the value just isn’t there. I think the simulators are really bad with trades.
    ————————————
Tim, you are right. Going a step further, PFF will let you force a trade if the other teams decline.

I do think of all the simulators, PFF is the closest to getting the value right. Though, I have not tried it with TDN because you have to pay or subscribe to be able to trade.

I was just wanting to show what kind of value we can get with an extra pick in the 2nd if we traded down from #18.

    • stangerx says:

Seem’s the mock draft simulator that lets you do most better than your team’s GM is the one that will get the most business. Same time love how they get people to trade down. Been a fan of that for years.

    • Tim Knight says:

      All good.

  8. mf13ss says:

I honestly don’t know where to draft Landon Dickerson, Center, Alabama. I think it would be foolish to draft him within the first two days of the Draft (major injury history), but his upside is so incredible in terms of talent alone.

If he’s available on early day three of the Draft, I’m probably taking the chance on him.

    • Tim Knight says:

Quinn Meinerz, Wisconsin-Whitewater looks like a nice center prospect. He looks like a wild mountain man. LOL

  9. ocalarob says:

    masters tomorrow!

  10. Randy says:

    Tim,
From a day or two ago. I am with you. I have never understood this idea that if I make a trade the picks have different value this year over next year. It makes absolutely no sense to me. A pick is a pick no matter when you use it. It doesn’t drop a round a year later.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah that’s how I view it. The only thing I can think of is it’s because you don’t get a pick this year, it’s a future commodity. But you decided to make that deal and the next draft the picks are still in the rounds you traded for regardless, not a round later. Everyone forgets that thinking when in the next draft you have those picks. LOL

    • CavalierKong says:

I’ve never subscribed to this theory either. I completely understand using the points as a baseline for value, but I don’t agree with future picks being worth less.

We traded Tunsil for a couple of 1sts and 2nds. It sure doesn’t feel like our Texans 2020 1st was actually only worth a 2nd, and this year’s 1st is only worth a 3rd even though that is what the chart says.

      • Tim Knight says:

It’s goofy. A team like I us that hit the reset button in 2019 – all these picks are huge for the vision of becoming a contender sooner than later but also sustaining it for years to come. Become that perennial playoff team. We’re not there yet but we got really close… ahhhhh damn!!! LOL

    • steveccnv says:

It makes perfect sense, if not, then I’ll gladly trade for a hamburger today and pay you on Tuesday.

You guys are a little weak when it comes to logic🤔

If it doesn’t make any sense, then let’s trade your 1st for my 1st every year.

In 2021 I get your 1st, you get mine in 2022. In 2022 you have my 1st, and again we trade my 2023 1st for your 2022 1st…

In 2021 I have my first and your first, in 2022 and every year after we have each other’s first, your extra first is always in the future, tomorrow never comes.

This logic though to me doesn’t work on a 1st, when done 1 time, because as the draft value chart shows 1sts have so much more value

  11. Randy says:

I like Meinerz. I’d have no problem taking him over Dickerson. Dickerson’s injury history is a major flag, for me. Talent-wise, he’s very good. There are about 4 or 5 centers at the top who are worth a look, but I don’t know if I’d rush to get one.

  12. Randy says:

    Kong,
Yeah, I’ve never been a big fan of that point system either. Lol

    • steveccnv says:

If you look at all the trades made in a 5 year period I’d bet they come right back to the mean, which is the chart. You would have to throw out the lopsided trades for QBs like the RG3 and what the jets gave up for Darnold, and only use it for a starting point

  13. bailbondmike says:

Phelon, that is a bad ass setup! You know your stuff much better than me.

  14. New Age says:

I understand the thinking about future picks but it can be easy to change and values change from year to year so it’s not super accurate. Still you have to provide a measure of value and there’s no way a future pick is as valuable during this draft as a current pick.

Just because Grier got amazing value, doesn’t mean it’s the normal result. He’s that good of a dealer and an unlikely scenario back then happened this year. Houston crashed back to earth.

Draft pundits have to do something to keep getting paid guys! We also have to argue about something!

    • Tim Knight says:

“Still you have to provide a measure of value and there’s no way a future pick is as valuable during this draft as a current pick.”

It’s always about the player you end up with not the pick itself. A pick is a chip, a prospect becomes a player. Teams wouldn’t do it if they were worried about it.

I’ve said it before, not every draft is as talented as the pundits say they are because that’s what they’re paid to do – promote it and keep fans interested. Teams aren’t always on board with that. So they trade down because they don’t have a high grade on this particular draft. But you have to pick someone at some point because this is the current market.

But let’s look at 2023 when we have two 1st round picks again. If Tua has not become what we hoped he was, we can now target a QB if need be. That’s the value of draft picks down the road.

Sometimes I feel like fans and media act like we don’t have enough with two 1’s, two 2’s and a 3rd. LOL

  15. mf13ss says:

    Tim Knight says:

Quinn Meinerz, Wisconsin-Whitewater looks like a nice center prospect. He looks like a wild mountain man. LOL
    —————-
He’s been on my radar for about a month now (thanks to the PFF mock draft feature), I was late to the party. Yes, he could be a good pick for us on day 3. He could be a sleeper pick.

  16. bailbondmike says:

M13, Seems like Creed Humphrey may be a safer bet if we were to take a center that high. I think Josh Myers is a little overrated but solid. Then is the Wis-Whitewater dude. Trey Hill the UGA center who is a bulldog who I hear is almost impossible to bull rush. Though I hear he is not athletic enough to play OG effectively. D might have lore insight on him. Then there is Jimmy Moressy from Pitt and the PSU center.

Honestly, Randy is right, no need to take one early like I have been.

    • mf13ss says:

Right on, no need to take a Center early. And I agree that Humphrey is the safest of bets, should we pick one at all. However, should Dickerson slide to day 3, I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on him… say in rounds 4-5.

If Matt Skura can return to form (which is the hope), that could buy more recovery time for Dickerson. But NO WAY am I wasting a pick on Dickerson until day 3 comes. JMO

  17. bailbondmike says:

M13, TM is dropping a new collaboration Friday. His announcement video is kinda cool.

  18. Randy says:

Besides, we SHOULD be drafting Linderbaum from Iowa at C next year. 🤘

    • bailbondmike says:

Dude, I totally forgot about him. See, you don’t come around enough. lol There is another really good center I think will be coming out of Texas A&M. Name is escaping me but his father was a bad ass OL in the NFL and his brother is already playing in the NFL.

  19. CavalierKong says:

    Randy,

I get it. To me, the points system is just to give a starting place in assigning value. Even though we all may have different ideas on what determines good and bad, we can all agree you can trade picks and get ‘bad value’ on the trade (such as if we traded down from #3 to #6 and only got a 7th in return, lol).

So with that concept in mind, the distinction of good and bad value comes down to a matter of degree. In order to determine that scale you have to assign value to the picks somehow. As basic and inaccurate that points system may be, I’ve just never come across a better starting place to look at a trade and get a ‘ballpark figure’, so to speak.

But like New Age just said, and you no doubt were alluding to, the value of the picks themselves change based on circumstance and from year to year so even the starting place isn’t some set-in-stone value by any means.

    • CavalierKong says:

The real way to assign value is after the picks are used, then you see what players you got. That’s the real reason the points system doesn’t actually mean shyte, lol.

      • steveccnv says:

If you used that logic you could’ve just traded with the Brown’s every year, when they sucked, and said in comparison we made a good trade

  20. Randy says:

    steve,
Lol. This stuff really isn’t that big a deal. I get the idea behind it in a trade, but the value of the pick never actually changes because it’s true value is really only when you use it. The future pick itself actually has zero value the year it’s traded outside of the trade because it can’t be used at all. It’s value is only a thing the year it can be used…outside of a trade scenario.
    ***
If I give you $100 today but tell you you can’t spend it until next year, it’s still worth $100 next year when you actually use it….and it was still $100 to me when I gave it away, not $50.

    • steveccnv says:

Except when you do that with a bank, they charge you interest, but NFL teams are more like shylocks.

So now you get it, that $100 costs interest

  21. Randy says:

    BBM,
Yeah, there’s another Mathews kid coming into the NFL next year. That family is amazing.

  22. Randy says:

    steve,
I get the idea of the point system. It’s actuarial stuff. I understand it. I just don’t like it. It takes the finesse or the art of evaluation out of it for me. Or, maybe I’m just too old for all this stuff. I don’t like the whole analytics thing in baseball either. I get it, but those calculations are what good players just do in their heads anyway. Lol

    • steveccnv says:

      I know I’m JBB.

In baseball it’s different, because they’ve found a way to maximize players, but I’m with you I don’t like it either, because it doesn’t consider variables, such as momentum, and situations

  23. Randy says:

    BBM,
Bruce Mathews was one of my favorite OL back in the day. The dude is one of the best OL ever.

  24. steveccnv says:

Dickerson could be like Gronk, who dropped to 3rd, because of his back

  25. Tim Knight says:

We should be focused on #6, 18, 36, 50 and 81. 156, 231 and 258 are camp competitors with the bottom of the roster unless one of them surprises. If we fail with that top 5 the other picks don’t matter even the ones we traded. That top 5 is key to this team taking the next step, along with the top guys from last year.

    Go Phins!!!!

  26. New Age says:

    Tim,

I completely agree. We are the perfect spots for some playmakers and five in the top 81 is awesome! I wouldn’t mind losing later picks just to move up a bit in some of our later early picks. In reality, no one wants the late picks but I’m willing to get rid of em!!

    • steveccnv says:

People always say they don’t want the late picks, yet right after the draft all we hear about are these great UDFAs we should sign

      • Mike E. says:

UDFA’s are different. They’re just out there and since they weren’t drafted you want them to get signed. Doesn’t mean you were going to use a draft pick on them.

      • steveccnv says:

No it doesn’t Mike, but that’s not what we’re talking about, we’re comparing them to a 7th.

UDFAs only sign 3 yr contracts, drafted 4 and you don’t have to fight over them.

No team would rather dump 2 7th rd picks for nothing. If you don’t want to use it trade it for something like 2 7s for the top 7th pick

  27. steveccnv says:

The first 6 picks should all make the team, just based of draft l position, the 7s are a crap shoot

  30. steveccnv says:

Mac Jones, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, who do the 9ers take.

I hope it’s Mac Jones, because it will take him a little longer, than the 2 more mobile QBs to get going.

Watched a lot of the 9ers last year, don’t think much of their pass catchers outside of Kittle.

They had a lot of guys out last year, but I can’t see them progressing, especially if a rookie starts 8 or so games +

    • The Flying Pig says:

Mac Jones has a 2017 DUI that has gotten some attention. He was a freshman at the time and I don’t think there’s been anything like that since

But I suspect it’s the kind of thing that might push him down a little

I suspect the other two with go before him

If I were guessing it would be
      1 Lawrence
      2 Wilson
      3 fields

Obviously the 49ers had some one in mind though

      • steveccnv says:

I read the story, I’m not buying into the dui is going to change anything.

I think he should be the 5th or even 6th QB taken behind Trask

    https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/gregory-rousseau-fall-2021-nfl-draft-boards

  33. Mike E. says:

Steve, if you mean do we wish we had 12 picks in the draft, even if a bunch were late round picks, sure. It’s always good to have picks to get the players you want

  34. mf13ss says:

    BBM,

Right there with ya on Rousseau, on not being sure where he should go in the Draft.

    Good tape? Check
    Good production? Check
Healthy player? Check (but for the ankle injury as a true freshman)
    Size/Frame? CHECK

His Pro-Day is what concerns me. Feels to me like he mailed it in and didn’t take the year off seriously. That leads me to believe that he’s solely relied on his God-given size and talent to succeed. It’s a whole different ballgame at the pro-level, as we all know. He has bust written all over him, IMO, but who knows? He’s so young and talented that maybe he just needs another year to mentally mature into a future stud.

Big-time risk/reward factor for this kid. As of right now, I don’t think I would take him @ R1P18. 2nd round? Yes… but not at the risk of losing a coveted RB @ R2P4.

    • Tim Knight says:

I thought I heard one of the pundits say he was hurt at his pro day but worked through it.

      • mf13ss says:

I had not heard that… I’ll have to check it out. If that’s true, it’s a game-changer for when he goes.

  35. mf13ss says:

“The other ACC defender who could potentially fall out of Round 1 is Hurricanes pass rusher Gregory Rousseau. This is not a case of injury, rather a mediocre pro day workout by someone with just one year of starting experience on the college level. Like Farley, Rousseau opted out of the 2020 campaign to prepare for the draft.”

This comes from Tony Pauline, who I do NOT trust.

    • mf13ss says:

I can’t find anything else regarding Rousseau working through an injury during his Pro-Day. Pauline may be correct.

    • mf13ss says:

For the record, I don’t trust Tony Pauline because I once followed him and posted his findings. He made a total ass out of me more than once, being he was 100% WRONG… just like Jason La Canfora.

I do my best to provide solid data, not to post BS… except on April Fools Day, of course.

Cause of the pre-nup sounds like Ross won’t have to sell the Phins.
But who gets divorced at 80?
    ——————————————-
Billionaire real estate developer Stephen M. Ross, the man behind New York’s Hudson Yards and the owner of the Miami Dolphins, is embroiled in an $8 billion divorce with his jewelry designer wife of 18 years, Kara.

Ross, 80, is said to be worth between $7 billion and $8 billion, but we are told there is a pre-nuptial agreement between the couple, who married in 2003.

    • mf13ss says:

The question would be who filed for the divorce… is it Steve or his wife Kara?

    • stangerx says:

Not that was planned, but a lot of my girlfriends were tom boys growing up. Guess something about a woman who can hang with the guys.

  38. bailbondmike says:

    Who has more risk reward?

    Parsons
    Phillips (concussions)
    Rousseau
    Ojulari
    Collins
    Basham

They all have some. I think Basham has the least risk. I feel like I know what I am getting with him but, at his size, is he a fit for our team.

    • mf13ss says:

IF Parsons has been thoroughly embarrassed — or is in fact innocent — of allegations against him, I think he’s the guy with the least risk and highest reward of the names you mentioned above.

Would have been a huge coincidence for it not to be him. Heard Marshall was doing training in South Florida for draft candidates. Guess that’s where.

      • mf13ss says:

The other Brandon Marshall (LB, Broncos, now a FA) was drafted by Jacksonville. Was wondering if he had set up shop in Florida, hence my wondering. That, and there are probably more than two Brandon Marshall’s in Florida.

    ————-
I’ve always been a fan of Brandon Marshall, even prior to us landing him in FA. He and I have communicated via Twitter, and he seems like a good guy. I’m proud of Omar and him, to have forged a friendship, opening the eyes of the public regarding bi-polar disorder.

I’ve got one family member who has it and it’s really sad. One day she’s a peach, the next day she’s prone to violence. It’s treatable, but it leaves them in a fog due to the meds.

IMO, we need to HELP these individuals, and information is key.

Now I wonder if Phillip Adams had a mental illness that was overlooked.

    • steveccnv says:

Surely he wasn’t all there, and I agree, these people with mental illnesses need to be treated better/quicker

    • stangerx says:

Pretty sure what Marshall was diagnosed with was borderline personality disorder, which is different than bipolar but as similar as some of the symptoms are don’t doubt he was tagged with both along the way. The treatments for each are quite different though.

Sounds like your family member has what is called mixed-state bipolar. It’s actually does not tend to be as severe as the classic version, but can be much harder to treat. Easy to say, but finding the right doc and sticking with his advice over time is the best answer.

      • mf13ss says:

Problem with her is that she feels so groggy on the meds, so she goes w/o for long periods of time. Then, she acts out, and realizes she needs to get back on the meds. I think she needs THERAPY, not just meds.

Not sure she wants therapy, when a magic pill can bring her back. And that there is problematic! Therapy, coupled with medicine, is the proper way to go, I would say.

Anybody wanting to use pills is shying away from the root cause of their problems, IMO.

      • mf13ss says:

What’s more, people develop an immunity to pills/meds over the long term. Therapy is a must, IMO.

      • stangerx says:

With therapy + meds seem you know what is needed. Problem is making it happen.

  44. mf13ss says:

Vernon Davis (2005, out of Maryland) vs Kyle Pitts (2021, out of Florida).

All things being equal, let’s pretend both are in the 2021 Draft. Who ya got? Pros vs cons. Who is the better prospect and why? You have to keep in mind the college QBs who threw to them, the circumstances both faced, and the elite traits both possess.

    GO!

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Probably Pitts

      I think he’s a unique hybrid between a WR and a TE

I think Davis was just a good tight end (Coming out of college)

      Pitts is a unique weapon

He might be able to have the impact of a Christian McCaffrey on an offense bc the defense is so confused about how to defend him.

    • Ken says:

Vernon Davis was JAG. Don’t get me wrong he was a good prospect but Pitts maybe a once in a generation type of talent

      • The Flying Pig says:

But people talked Davis up before the draft just like they are doing to Pitts now

I actually think Davis was better than a JAG

Davis was dominant in 09 and 10 catching over 900 yards in each season and combining for 20 TDs in those two seasons

He was productive at no other seasons – but there were a couple of years when he was special

      • mf13ss says:

I don’t want your take on Davis’ pro career, so as to call him a “JAG”. That’s defeating the purpose of this exercise, man.

I’m talking strictly about the prospects of then vs now.

      • mf13ss says:

That’s for Ken… Pig clearly understands this.

      • Ken says:

He was talked up as a great prospect but not like Pitts. His measurables while first round worthy were not like Pitts’s that is what I mean by JAG

  45. Rockphin says:

You DO realize that Vernon Davis went @ R1P6 (2006 Draft), right? We’re talking about once-in-a-generational talent.

    • Ken says:

He went high but I do not recall anyone talking about him being a generational talent. My thought on him at the time he was over drafted.

      • mf13ss says:

        Alright, that’s fair.

I DO remember many calling Vernon Davis a “generational talent”. He did pretty good for himself, too, despite the teams and QBs he played for at the time.

      • Ken says:

Davis was a fine TE but never really dominant imo. People are talking about Pitts like if he is not Kellen Winslow or Travis Kielce he will be a bust

      • stangerx says:

        Cheers on Winslow

      • Ken says:

I will collect on that next week Stanger

  53. stangerx says:

Where did Kellen Winslow get drafted? Cause that’s the TE I want.

  54. mf13ss says:

Quite honestly, I think I’ve got Kyle Pitts rated a shade higher than Vernon Davis. Pitts has the agility that Davis lacked. Conversely, Davis was always an excellent blocker, and Pitts lacks as much.

Yes, I feel Kyle Pitts is worthy of our R1P6 selection… just as the Niners’ felt Vernon Davis was worthy of their R1P6 selection in 2006.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I read a Davis scouting report that described him as undersized but Very athletic coming out of Maryland

115 years?!! LOL, it was a typo!

Yes, I think Pitts is going to be just what the doctor ordered for today’s NFL Offenses.

    MF13,
All the studies show us that the best results for treating basically any mental illness is a combination of medication and talk therapy. The two combined give folks the best opportunity for success. Many of the stronger medications used can cause tiredness or grogginess, but there are many that don’t now. A person needs to be their own best advocate when they are discussing options with their psychiatrist. Many people simply go to an MD for meds and not an actual psychiatrist. I don’t recommend that but some folks won’t see a psychiatrist. Most GPs are simply not knowledgeable and certainly don’t keep up with the current trends in psychopharmacology.
    ***
NAMI is a great organization, but how robust chapters are can wary widely from place to place. They are, however, a great resource. Local or State human service agencies can also be a good resource, but it varies from State to State.
    ***
Borderline personality disorder is one of the most difficult diagnoses to treat. It can be highly medication resistant because unlike something like schizophrenia it is not just a matter of brain chemistry that can be manipulated with chemicals. BPD takes a much more holistic approach. They are THE most difficult folks I have ever worked with, and it isn’t even close. And, as stanger said, it’s very different from the various bipolar disorders and managed differently.
    ***
Just taking a pill simply won’t do it. Mental illness doesn’t work that way. Yes, you can get results, but if it’s what we call a serious and persistent mental illness, medication is usually not enough. Again, meds are much more useful with illnesses based on a chemical imbalance like schizophrenia. Unfortunately lots of folks think if they just take their meds they should be fine(like a lot of us!). For your basic depression, dysthymia or situational depression, yes maybe….but SPMI…not usually. This gal would benefit from a good diagnostic assessment if she hasn’t had one. Most therapists do them…so can psychiatrists or certified nurse practitioners.

  59. Tim Knight says:

David Carr just made comparisons that Tua reminds him of a young Steve Young going through the same growing pains. Not just the lefty thing but also being a shorter QB that needs to find their passing windows over time. I mentioned Tua reminding me of Young last year because of how they both excel on the move. The lefty throwing just looks the part. I expect Tua to be a physically and mentally stronger QB in year two. Just don’t let ORob see this post. 😉

    • Phindog says:

Honestly I didn’t really think Tua was bad last year
I just think he ended on a bad note and we just get stuck hearing “he struggled” for a full offseason

He didn’t throw an interception until his 7th game of his career – that’s actually pretty phenomenal

It’s shame we can’t sprinkle in that stat with big yardage games – but we just aren’t a finished product offensively and he still has to grow

      Don’t tell ORob I said that…

      • Tim Knight says:

      • Ken says:

Tua and Burrows numbers were very similar except Tua won more games

      • steveccnv says:

When you’re winning games, you don’t get the garbage yards that Burrow and Herbert got. The games Tua trailed AZ, KC, Buffalo he had a lot of yards 248 2 tds , 316 2 tds 1 int and 361 1 td 3 int.

Burrow vs Clev 3 tds L, vs Phi 2 tds T, vs Jags 1 td 1 int W, vs ind 1 int L all these games were just over 300 yrds, vs clev 3 tds 1 int 406 yards Loss.

There’s really not that much of a difference, except Tua had trouble pulling the trigger in the pocket, hopefully it gets fixed this offseason

  60. mf13ss says:

Ogbah on the left edge as a DE/OLB, Van Ginkel plays both sides, we’ll see with Biegel coming off of the Achilles.

Baker and McKinney inside is a nice tandem, but we’ll see them move around.

We need another Edge/LB that can make an impact.

The secondary is as good as most teams can ask for. We’re pretty friggin deep even if we don’t have all pro’s at every position. LOL

  75. Tim Knight says:

I’d like to ask this……. why is Najee Harris projected late 1st or 2nd round? All time leading rusher for Alabama; a big, fast and savvy back who is an elite receiver. He also gets solid grades in pass pro. If you watch some videos of him in interviews he’s a high character guy. Why is he not rated higher in the draft? The RB thing?

This doesn’t fit the current vibe with drafts, but I’d take him at #6. He’s like Terry Kirby 3.0. LOL

I think he’s a great fit for what we want to do.

People say Pitts is a TE/WR hybrid, but Harris as a RB/TE/WR not that high?

Anyone else think Najee Harris is going to be a beast in the NFL?

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think it’s a RB thing. He looks like the real deal though

    • John Pruett says:

Just a waste of a pick honestly. Guys picked early in the draft at RB traditionally don’t perform better than lower picks. There are people that believe J Williams will be just as productive and others have Etienne as the top back. None of them should be picked before 15 at the earliest. Get an elite prospect from a position that has a bigger difference between elite and good enough.

The top 10 RBs last year were all lower than a 1st outside of #9 and #10 (Jacobs and Gordon)
Top 10 in 2019 had 4 1st rounders in Elliot, Jacobs, Fournette, and McCaffrey
2018- at least had 5 but one was Adrian Peterson!

Barkley was injured in 2020 and has 2300 yards in 3 years. Terrible for the #2 pick
Elliot was great with that amazing OL but was average this year. Too expensive
Gurley- already on downside after 6 years and just 6k yards. Too expensive when elite
Gordon- 3 teams in 6 years but only 5 k yards. Never lived up to pick #15
Fournette- 4 years and already an afterthought. Just 3 k yards in career- what a waste.
McCaffrey- 4 years and 3k yards. Just not worth #7 with injuries.

These guys are why you don’t pick RB early. I like Najee a lot but he’s not worth a top 15 pick.

  76. New Age says:

Maybe a beast but not worth a top 15 pick. Not based off the history of RB picks.

  77. Tim Knight says:

So Najee will get 20+ touches PG Rush/Rec but guys who will get less than 10 is top 10?

He’s not just a RB. I think teams are sleeping on this guy like he’ll be there later. I don’t think he will. He’s a mismatch nightmare too. Who’s covering him?

  84. Ken says:

David I find your segue ways between topics perplexing

  85. steveccnv says:

Above I posted a link to an article talking about why we shouldn’t take a WR in the 1st.

The Dolphins have selected five wide receivers in the first round since the start of the common draft in 1967, starting with Randal Hill in 1991, followed by O.J. McDuffie in 1993, Yatil Green in 1997, Ginn and DeVante Parker in 2015.

Of these 5 Hill was a bust, Green couldn’t stay healthy, and Ginn was mostly an occasional playmaker, but the other 2 were or are very good WRs.

I wouldn’t have used Pro Bowl as the bench mark, but what the article doesn’t give us is the number of WRs acquired from all sources outside of the 1st.

Playing the field with 200 WRs of which 5 made the Pro Bowl doesn’t seem like the way to go, if you need a WR, I’ll take the 1st rd guy with a 40% chance he’s pretty good.

5 out of 200 is only a 2.5% chance you’re going to get a stud, and a little larger chance the guy is pretty good.

Conclusion, another U75 thinking he came up with some genius way of determing who to take in the 1st or not take based on facts that fit their agenda

  86. steveccnv says:

I like this thinking of taking Waddle

Waddle in the slot for 2021 is what our WR room is missing, he like Pitts could move right in and contribute.

Not sure if Smith and Chase play in the slot. I’d think Chase does and Smith doesn’t.

I’d also have Waddle returning punts and KOs.

It would put an end to the failed WRs like Grant, Wilson and Hurns

  87. The Flying Pig says:

    Any thoughts on Joe Tryon

He might be a good pick in The 2nd round

  88. steveccnv says:

I think it would be a mistake to take an RB at 18 or anywhere in the 1st. Also think, if we don’t take one at 36 we’re going to be left holding our junk again, like last year

    • Mike E. says:

If the guy you take at #18 becomes your Alvin Kamara or Derrick Henry, it’s silly NOT to take him. If you’re going to use him a lot, go ahead and get him, no reason to wait.

      • steveccnv says:

My reasoning is I only see 1 RB taken in the 1st and that’s debatable, so at 36 we can get one

Possible, but if it’s the one we want, and we can’t get him in RD2, then take him in RD1. When you have 4 picks in the top 50 you get who you want, you don’t play games

David I find your segue ways between topics perplexing

    I find them stupid

I would be happy with this one

    6: R1 P6 WR Ja’Marr Chase – LSU
    18: R1 P18 LB Micah Parsons – Penn State
    36: R2 P4 EDGE Joseph Ossai – Texas
    50: R2 P18 RB Javonte Williams – North Carolina
    81: R3 P17 C Josh Myers – Ohio State
    156: R5 P12 DL Tedarrell Slaton – Florida
    231: R7 P3 S Mark Webb – Georgia
    258: R7 P30 DL Xavier Kelly – Arkansas

    • steveccnv says:

How are all of these DL guys going to make the team, that you guys keep taking in the mocks?

      We’re set on the DL

      • The Flying Pig says:

I’m not saving a spot on the roster for the 30th pick of the 7th round. At that stage he’s there to compete anyway

Ossai is an OLB – he’s 220 lbs

Slaton on the other hand is close to 360 pounds. If he can move, he’s a NT. I don’t know that Davis is a good long term fit there

    This guy is an idiot
Was roasted by Dolfans on Twitter yesterday
Spent a night crying in the shower
And this is the best he came up with

    • steveccnv says:

Why move to 6, if you were going to make that retarded pick, could’ve gotten him at 12 or 18?

He must be a jets fan
