Dolphins News and Why I Miss the NFL Combine

“The Underwear Olympics” as some people call it. Regardless of that smear, I feel like the combine has its place, and just like any piece of information, if you’re doing your analysis correctly, it’s another piece of data you use to form your final report, not the only piece. The problem of not having a NFL Combine is the information you get from Pro Days, which are not sanctioned by the NFL, can be slanted, or maybe I should just say ARE slanted. Each college program wants their athletes to succeed because it helps their program succeed. It seems like all the top WR prospects that actually ran at their Pro Day ran sub 4.4 times. It’s not impossible that it’s true, but more than likely those hand held timers (homers) shaved a bit to make that happen. I like when each player is running on the same strip of turf and timed by the same guys and called out if they lean a little too forward or don’t start from the right position. Geez, these guys don’t even wear shirts anymore! Will they be running in jock straps soon, or maybe without them? I suspect that next year we’ll be back to the good ole combine as it was and they will have to wear shorts, shirts and those dreaded heavy numbers on the shirts that most likely easily add a few tenths of a second to all timed events.

Now on to Dolphins news, even if it’s old news. The Dolphins were involved in 2 trades, likely synchronized trades with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The net result of both trades for the 2021 draft is that the Miami Dolphins will now pick at #6 in RD1 instead of #3, but we have acquired no further compensation in this draft. That compensation doesn’t arrive until 2022 and 2023. We still have picks 6, 18, 36, 50, 81, 156, 231 and 258. Definitely top heavy with two selections in each of the first 2 rounds and no 4th RD selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or trade back and either lose a pick or gain a pick here and there. The most important thing is finding players that make your team better, no matter when you are selecting. We have flexibility and draft capital to get what we want, so now we hope that we want is on target. The Dolphins have also signed DT John Jenkins to a 1 year contract. Jenkins last played DT/DE for the Dolphins in 2019 and spent 2020 with the Chicago Bears.

Offense or defense? Which side gets the first pick? I still believe it’s offense, but I’m not convinced it’s DeVonta Smith or Kyle Pitts. If we do go WR I think it’s going to be Ja’Marr Chase. If we go OL I think it’s either going to be Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. A lot of you seem to be on the Parson’s train but I don’t think we’re going there. If I were GM, priority #1 would be helping Tua become the QB that can take this team deep into the playoffs. I personally believe that Tua will be a better QB regardless of the players we bring in because he’s a winner and he’s working so hard to be the best he can be, but adding talent around him makes that concept closer to reality. Even if Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson came back to a level close to their previous best, can you count on either of them to finish the season? Both were out all last season and have a lot of catching up to do to get back into football shape. Can DeVante Parker ever have a full season where he’s healthy and basically the same for Will Fuller? Can you lean on Jakeem Grant as a WR and not just an electric return man? Can TE Mike Gesicki really get to the level of a Travis Kelce or Darren Waller? I think he can but that would require him being a much bigger part of the offense, and over his first 3 seasons, he’s yet to eclipse 100 or more targets in a season. Compared to the aforementioned Kelce and Waller, both had 145 targets last season and although both had less targets in 2019, 136 and 117 respectively, each still topped 100 easily. So does that mean TE/WR Kyle Pitts is more likely? If it were me, I’d go WR all the way, we have a really nice TE corps right now with Gesicki, Smythe (who improved last season as a pass catcher), Shaheen, Cethan Carter and Chris Myarick. Smythe is a solid blocker and Shaheen is another big bodied TE that caught 3 TD’s last season. When I look at the WR corps, unfortunately I keep coming up with more questions than answers. Parker, Fuller, Williams, Hurns, Wilson, Bowden, Perry, Grant, and Hollins. Who is the one guy in that bunch that you can count on? Realistically, the answer is none of the above. That’s why my best guess is Chase, and not Smith. I think we need a reliable target, one who has ability but also has availability. I do think that Smith’s size is going to keep him off our roster and the huge consolation prize after Smith who is truly an elite route running WR is Ja’Marr Chase. Mark it down folks, that’s my pick and I believe it will be our pick as well.

BITCH OF THE EVENING. The Eastern Time Zone sports fans will have to let the California “TAIL” wag the the American sports scene. The start of tonight’s National Championship Game is 9 fucking 20 PM—-and will probably be delayed by yet another mountain of commercials until 9:30, or so. GOD FORBID an 8:00 PM Eastern start for this title game because, after all, pleasing the California wackos is far more important than pleasing those of us in the other three time zones!!

    Tim,
You like Parsons that much, huh? That is some major praise comparing him to LT. I haven’t seen that. I’m still just confused as to why folks see him as a legitimate edge rusher because he hasn’t been that in college….not even close. Yeah, he’s an athletic freak, but he’s never been a serious threat off the edge. Im not saying he can’t improve in that area. He certainly has a high ceiling, but I’m not so sure his future is as a 14 sack edge rusher. I think he’s better suited to be a do-it-all kinda LB, if he can learn how to play with more discipline.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I wouldn’t compare anyone to LT until they do what LT did. All I’m saying is id Parsons is who the pundits are saying he is, he should fill a hole and hopefully improve the defense and move it to the next level. Why wouldn’t you want that if it’s possible?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think Parsons is going to be a special NFL LB.

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

LT will take your head off, I should know, he almost took mine off😉

That’s what made him LT, that’s not Parsons.

I think Parsons and Owen both played out of position, they should both be playing OLB in a 3-4, and dropping in coverage at times

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,
I’m not sure why they let Lawson and KVN go, but they did sign them to begin with. That suggests to me they liked what they brought to the team. There are several reasons guys get cut but usually only one that they get signed…they like them. Both guys had pretty similar years to what they’ve been their whole careers, so I can’t see how Flores didn’t like their production and cut them because of it.
    ****
I think these guys like tweeners. It gives them flexibility. I don’t even think of us as a 3/4 or 4/3 anymore.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tweeners are more 3-4 or what the late great Bill Arnsparger created with the 5-2. It’s the same idea, 3 good interior linemen and a swarm of LBs. We have a very good secondary.

It’s interesting that as things change they remain the same. 😉

    Piggy,
For me, he looked kinda slow and stiff playing. The more I watch him; the more I wonder if it’s more about him being more of a technician. I actually like the way he plays. He’s a powerful kid who plays hard, and he plays smart. He has a lot to like, but I just don’t think he’s a top #18 guy. That’s just me.
    ***
He’s also kind of a tweener who is probably viewed as a 4-3 DE. I don’t know if that really means anything in our defense, but ya never know. He played at around 270-75. He was 260 at his pro day, and I believe he said he did it on purpose.
    —————–
100% agree with all of the above, Randy. Paye is a very good player, but I don’t see him in our future. I form my own opinions, and it’s very seldom I ever read a scout’s take on a prospect unless I become totally flabbergasted.

I said a week ago that I view him as a nice fit in a 4-3 D, who can flex between DE and DT (tweener)… comparing him to Jared Odrick.

Yes, he could work for us… but not in the 1st round. We need to get faster — not slower — at the EDGE positions.

If we were still the 2012 Miami Dolphins, yes, I’d consider Paye @ R1P18. Today? Not so much. JMO

Have you read the article called 30 Tyrants by Lee Smith? It’s a terrifying read about our political and corporate class and how they’ve sold us out to China.

On to football, getting rid of Lawson and KVN was all about production. As Steve stated, we were slow to get to passers all year and both had terrible stats outside of 1-2 games. KVN was amazing at Cincy….and pretty subpar the rest of the year. Lawson getting 4 sacks…is pretty pitiful honestly. I don’t know who is the upgrade, but our two ILBs are studs. I like Parsons but not nearly as much as Tim. I love Pitts as much as Tim loves Parsons lol.

So Sam Darnold is way better than Teddy Bridgewater?

  23. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I really don’t understand the Darnold trade. You paid pretty good money to Bridgewater, he looks better than Darnold, and will win you more games. You are also deciding on Darnolds option with at best 16 games of data but he hasn’t played a full season yet. They paid a pretty decent haul on what looks like a really risky bet. Let’s hope the Jets break another QB.

  24. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

If you’ve actually watched the two play, then yes, Darnold is better than Bridgewater. Is he way better? That would have to be defined, but it wasn’t really much to give to trade for a young QB who’s been thwarted by bad coaching his entire career.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They didn’t give up a lot to get him, but yeah seems odd.

Bridgewater’s contract last year was puzzling, thought of him as just a care taker in NO.

Could they still trade up with Atlanta and take another one?

Only 400 pts, and 450 for Denver makes the most sense.

If Atlanta keeps the pick and does something weird like a CB…

First round QB’s don’t cost what they used to that’s why so many get drafted much higher than they should and because the cost isn’t so great the teams don’t mind going back into the draft as frequently.
If top ten picks cost what they did when Matt Ryan was drafted Lawrence would probably be the only top 10 QB in this draft, the rest are just relative bargains so why not.

And being able to be coached by arguably the greatest coach of all-time, that was a no-brainer.”

Not sure 5 QBs are going top 5 but I can see 4 in a row. A team may trade up with ATL for a QB if they don’t take one. I think it’s a lock that 3 go top 3.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cincinnati could trade with Denver and still get Penei, so quite possibly 1st 5 are QBs, and more likely, than Pitts and Chase gone before 6

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hope so. I like Parsons a lot but I think if Chase and/or Pitts is there for us, I think one of them should be the pick. Sewell to the Bengals makes a lot of sense. Protect your young franchise QB.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Far as I’m concerned all we need is a QB taken at #4 or #5 or the Bengals to take Sewall.

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t know where all these rumors came from, we’ll I do but…, with Atlanta and Cincinnati taking Pitts and/or Chase.

    Offensive Tackle
No team in the NFL has more of a need on the offensive line than the Cincinnati Bengals. Joe Burrow was constantly under pressure throughout his rookie campaign and ended up tearing his ACL and MCL as a result of his lack of protection. The unit as a whole allowed 48 sacks over the course of the season and wasn’t much better in the run game either, as the team ranked 24th in rushing on a measly 4.1 yards per carry.

Atlanta needs Edge, RB and CB, so they may go CB or trade down (currently talking with teams) so QB taken at 4.

QB at 4, Penei at 5

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s only natural, that when you have a young team, part of the improvement from year to year is from the growth of the players, yet we rarely see that considered.

In a recent breakdown by position we heard things like QB is worse, because Fitz is gone, but if he only played relief pitcher the 2nd half isn’t it more important that we have a better Tua than Fitz on the roster, plus Brisket will get some wildcat type snaps.

Same with KVN leaving and AVG getting more snaps

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve been saying that for years that’s it’s more important for last year’s draft class to progress than who we select in the current draft. The draft is always about shiny new toys and the new excitement, but if last year’s class isn’t progressing that’s a setback. Jackson, Hunt, Kindley and Tua progressing is huge. The same with other young players throughout the team, but those guys for the offense are a big deal. It all goes together for the team becoming a contender.

  39. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Son made a great observation about the state of revolving young QBs…perfect sense.

Stanger, on fan affiliation for the no competition QB state this year was spot on.

Build through the draft and let it reveal itself 1, 2, sometimes 3 years down the road. Then, re-up best, if you can.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Team’s that have QB competitions in camp because they’re not sold on one guy usually doesn’t pan out. Not saying it’s never happened, but it’s not ideal. Most teams that win have their guy and go all in on them at least for a few years until they prove otherwise.

That said, I think building a team where you can still compete with your backup is the way to go. If it’s all about “your QB” and without him you can’t compete, you’re not a good enough team anyway. You need to be at least solid in all phases. Unless that QB is elite and makes that kind of difference. There’s not a whole lot of them in the league.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — the team should be more than just the QB. And they are building this team deep and young, which really like. Even if your stud QB goes down you are better off, especially for the future. Gonna get a lot more deep after this draft.

There is a theme to what our FO wants to accomplish, but at some point it might be wise to get some 30 yr olds on the team.

We’ve made the FA mistake of having too many old players and had lots of guys out due to injury.
