What will the 2021 Miami Dolphins Offense Look Like?

#1, Tua Tagovailoa is the linchpin to our season. There are so many other variables to our team’s success but if our 2nd year QB doesn’t improve significantly from last season, it will be hard for the rest of the team to get further than our 10 win season and for us to get a playoff berth. The 6 guys pictured above, WR DeVante Parker, TE Mike Gesicki, WR Jaylen Waddle, WR Will Fuller, TE Hunter Long and RB Myles Gaskin will also play a huge role in the offense going forward. TE Mike Gesicki is in his final year of his contract so he will be looking to have a big season. Our #6 draft pick this year WR Jaylen Waddle will be an immediate impact player both on offense and special teams as a top notch return man. Our #81 draft pick was TE Hunter Long from Boston College. A bit of surprise this one because I felt we had pretty good depth at TE with Gesicki, Smythe, Shaheen, Myarick and Carter but we probably intend on using multiple TE sets often. Those TE sets put the defense in a tough spot because it can be a power running formation as well as a receiving mismatch with a bunch of 6’6 250 guys that can run that need to be covered. Pair that with a burner like Fuller or Waddle who can take one to the house and big plays can happen.

Let’s get back to Tua. This guy is hungry to be a top player, to be the best he can be. He has been doing extensive weight training, it’s already paid dividends and Tua looks much thicker on his lower half, a huge boon for a QB. He looks bigger on top as well and his arms are certainly stronger as well. Besides the weight training he’s been working diligently on balancing exercises and drills. Better balance helps make a repeatable throwing motion easier and helps distribute the arm strength better. You can question his skill all you want, but you can’t question his heart, desire and sense of responsibility one drop. Once again, Tua’s success will be paramount to the teams success. In addition to Tua doing all he can to better this season, The Dolphins kept up their end of the deal by drafting OT Liam Eichenberg. I can’t tell you for sure that he will be our RT day one but if I were to be a betting man, I’d lay down some cash on that being the case. I do believe our offensive line will be LT Austin Jackson, LG Solomon Kindley, C Matt Skura, RG Robert Hunt and then RT Liam Eichenberg. Those two mountains in the middle, Kindley 6’3 337 and Robert Hunt 6’5 325 have some work to do as far as pass protection, but in my eyes, last year’s O-line was better than I’ve seen in some time. I expect that to improve with a true offseason, training camp and OTA’s.

I’m not going to continue to discuss the need for a RB. I’m in wait and see mode and I see no reason to continue to dwell on an issue that may not be an issue. Other teams do well with undrafted and late round draft picks at the RB position, and we already hit with 2019 7th RD pick Myles Gaskin. If this year’s 7th RD pick Gerrid Doaks shares the same success Gaskin had last season we’ll be just fine at RB. The RB by committe approach ensures fresher legs and also eliminates the worry of relying too much on one player and then trying to change the offense once that player goes down. I think at least 3-4 of these guys will get a fair amount of carries and some weeks one will be the feature back and the next week we’ll change it up to a different rotation. That makes it harder for opposing defenses to game plan against us.

On paper, we have so much more talent at the skill positions at WR and TE it’s actually crazy. Health can and will be a factor as we have a few that unfortunately haven’t been able to stay whole for an entire season. Still, with DeVante Parker, Will Fuller and Jaylen Waddle and then Mike Gesicki and Hunter Long at TE, that’s a lot of talent to cover. Parker always difficult on 50/50 balls thrown his way, Fuller can easily take the top off the defense and make big plays deep downfield. Waddle can do it all, turn short passes into big gains and if teams start coming up on him aggressively, he will make them pay with double moves that leave them in the dust. If teams are forced to double cover Waddle, Fuller or Parker, Gesicki will be a pain one on one against most defensive players. Add in another pass catching TE like Hunter Long and it almost seems unfair. Truth is though, it all starts in the trenches and our O-line will not only need to open holes for Gaskin and company but protect Tua Tagovailoa too. We know Tua was conservative last season, much to the detriment of the offense. He took the easy quick completions often instead of waiting or sometimes even recognizing and seeing players getting open just a few yards further downfield. If the O-line is stout, that will give Tua more confidence to let things develop. Or, the new dual OC’s of Eric Studesville and George Godsey will have to be more creative and move Tua around, who by the way, throws pretty well while on the move.

I look forward to seeing this offense get to work, it’s going to be fun. I’m already quite excited at what we can do and I can’t wait to see them hit the field. On the other hand, if I said it was the offense I look forward to seeing most I’d be lying. I really do want to see the Tua offense in year two, but it’s our defense with Jaelan Phillips, Benardrick McKinney and our most excellent secondary that I wish to see most. I think our defense can be special, one of the top defensive units in the NFL. Josh Allen won’t be so damn cocky and smirky when we play him next. If we want to to get to the top of the division, we have to beat the Bills. They shellacked us, ran over and through us when it counted for us, and we need to be the ones doing the bullying next time around. I think the defense will be a big part of the reason, although much like Buffalo found out, give a QB a great weapon like Stefon Diggs and the offense will be better. Well, we gave Tua the upgrades on offense and now along with our top defense, the QB has to improve with the defense.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

“More significant absences from OTAs Wednesday: Emmanuel Ogbah, cornerbacks Xavien Howard, Byron Jones, Justin Coleman and Jason McCourty, linebackers Jerome Baker and Benardrick McKinney, offensive tackle D.J. Fluker and receiver Will Fuller. ”

Ogbah is speculated to want a re-do. And the man does deserve a raise.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d give it to him now, before he plays with real pressure from the other side, but cheats never really had a big sack guy outside of John Bones Jones’ brother.

Problem is the cap being lower this year

  3. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ahhh yeah, we’re getting close. Here’s some tidbits from OTAs, can be found in the article Stang posted.

    ▪ Receiver Preston Williams, who missed much of last year with a foot injury, was spotted on the field, walking briskly, but did not appear to be practicing.

He continues to work with trainers, and a team source said he’s expected back for the start of the regular season, if not sooner.

Williams had foot surgery late last season and is now able to do some running.

    ▪ Others not spotted on Wednesday: tight ends Adam Shaheen and Chris Myarick, linebacker Brennan Scarlett and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis, who was attending a graduation in Alabama this week.

    ▪ Rookie running back Gerrid Doaks was doing rehabilitation work and not practicing on Wednesday.

    ▪ Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns, who both opted out of playing last season, were at practice.

    ▪ Linebacker Elandon Roberts was practicing, just five months after he sustained what the team called a significant (knee) injury. His movement looked good.

    ▪ Reporters are not permitted to identify who’s playing what position (such as right tackle or slot corner) or identify who’s with the first team or second team.

But The Miami Herald previously reported – and nothing has changed – that the Dolphins planned to give Liam Eichenberg the chance to win the right tackle job, and have Jesse Davis compete with Solomon Kindley at left guard.

But there was no 11 on 11 work or 1 on 1 work in the two-hour session, not a single rep in which offense went against defense.

The team practiced at a pace that wasn’t exactly high speed, part of an agreement reached between the players and Brian Flores. The session was heavy on instruction.

Tua Tagovailoa threw a few short passes — including two to Jaylen Waddle — but no defensive players were in coverage.

Jibri Blount, the former North Carolina Central basketball player who’s trying to make the Dolphins as a tight end, showed good concentration on a 20-plus yard reception – near the sideline – on a pass thrown by Reid Sinnett. But as we’ve noted here, no defensive player was in coverage.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was hoping Preston would be practicing. “Walking briskly” doesn’t do it for me.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was surprised to see that was even a question with Williams. We never did get an explanation of what exactly was wrong with his foot (kinda like Roberts knee injury). There was even speculation until the very end of the season Williams might play. I guess it was a serious injury.

This is just another example of how closely this regime guards information. I love it. In a league where the difference between winning and losing often comes down to the smallest factors, I’ve always been a proponent of not giving away more info than you absolutely have to.

Biden just said, people that make under 400k will pay no taxes. What a gaslighter

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Did he misspeak? He’s been saying people who make under 400k will not pay more taxes for months.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Who the fuck knows, he’s a walking tragedy

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So you’re giving him a free pass, because maybe he misspoke

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not at all. It’s just people making under 400k paying no taxes would make the government crash and burn. Plus he’s been talking about no extra taxes for people who make under 400k since the election. So figured he said it wrong. Just what makes sense to me. Didn’t read that in a news article.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You certainly aren’t holding him accountable for his words, on something he does everytime he speaks

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

We’re already paying more ‘taxes’. It’s called a massive jump in inflation.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s all the stimulus money. Give people money and they spend it.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Some of it for sure. But 6 months ago we had already given 2 of the 3 stimulus checks and my gas was still 30% cheaper and my food items were 12% cheaper. Can’t put it all on free money or it would have adjusted more quickly.

I believe the no new taxes as well as I believed Bush Sr when he said it. Shutting down the economy for little benefit destroyed the revenue of not only small businesses but the local areas taxing those dead businesses. They have to find money somewhere and the government destroying the value of the dollar is exactly where they will find it. Biden almost makes Trump look fiscally responsible which seems crazy as hell.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I saw the video of him saying it and he was pretty demanding

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I just sorta of figure that if he is saying he wants 90+ percent of Americans not to pay taxes that it will be huge news. If he made a flub…. why should he be accountable for anything more than that?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You guys held Trump accountable for everything, and 99% of shit they made up, why the change of heart?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    C: Matt Skura
    RG: Robert Hunt
    RT: Liam Eichenberg

“I think last year for me, I wasn’t as comfortable just in general. I wasn’t comfortable calling plays. … I just didn’t have the comfortability of checking plays, alerting plays, and doing that. I just rode with the play, even if I knew it wasn’t going to work. I was going to try to make it work still.”

“Actually, what I’m saying is: I didn’t actually know the playbook necessarily really, really good and that’s no one else fault, but my fault. Our play calls were simple when I was in. I didn’t have alerts and checks where now, I feel comfortable and I can maneuver my way through these things now.”

    — Tua on last year and last year’s playbook.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Other articles say, he was just Tua being Tua and knows the playbook, just not as well as he’d like.

No one really believes he was on the field last year and didn’t know the playbook, he just didn’t have the confidence in his pre/post snap reads to change the play. He said even though he knew some plays would fail he called them anyways.

Bottom line is he feels more comfortable now in the offense.

So many things, that have nothing to do with his physical play, will increase his performance level.

Better receivers around him, more experienced OL, he’ll have the ability to change plays, D seems to be better…

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s straight out of Tua’s mouth. Part of me thinks “that ain’t good” but another comes with lots of room for improvement. And am guessing this new O is designed around what he is comfortable with.

But does sound like he’ll never be a Peyton Manning calling new plays on the fly from the shotgun drop. Same time not many of them.

Personally i think I’d rather have Hunt at RT, let Eichenberg kick into the RG spot until he acclimates to the NFL. Hunt was strong at RT last year, and i think would have a bright future there. If they like Hunt for RG id start with Fluker at RT over Eichenberg, again, i think jumping straight in witht he rookie at a position thats probably the toughest to adjust to the NFL speed is not the best way to go, unless he just flat our beats him out in PS.Eichenberg is the future at one of our OL positions, but im not sure which at this point, hell it might even be LT with a swap of Jackson to RT. This could make sense with a Lefty as our QB.

I think the closest things to locks right now is Kindly at LG and Jackson at LT, after that im do lean towards Skura over Deiter, and i lean towards having Hunt somewhere, maybe RT maybe RG, and then Fluker potentially in competition with Eichenberg for the last spot.

I cant get a good bead on anything right now, there isnt enough conclusive information out there to figure it out, and like i said, a lot of these guys have versatility to play different spots. What ii do feel pretty confident about is that they will field the 5 best guys, and i think we do have at least 5 starting quality guys right now, so im not overly worry about how it shakes out as long as we play better than last year.

It should all be worked out in camp, but seems only things for sure are that Jackson, Hunt and Kindley should start. And even there they said Davis will compete with Kindley at LG (even if was surprised they didn’t have Davis competing at G or T on the right side).

Eich, Fluker, Skura and Deiter (maybe) in legit play for the other two spots has to make you feel good about the depth of the OL, especially when you add in utility man Davis.

Even Tom Brady said he didn’t have a great grasp of Arian’s playbook for half the season. Aaron Rodgers went through the same thing when LaFleur became HC and had a new offense. These guys are seasoned vets and Tua was a rookie. It’s not that out of the ordinary.

    ***
On the OL, I think Hunt and Kindley will end up at guard. Hunt showed he doesn’t have the feet to be a tackle. They could both be very good guards though….at least in the running game….pass pro is still a little shaky. Fluker is the vet guy you bring in you can trust and plug in at either tackle or guard to give the young guys a chance to develop if needed. I’d be shocked if they didn’t give Eich every chance to win the starting RT job with Fluker and Davis as your safety nets for all of these young guys. I like how they’ve done it. They’re building a young OL while bringing in solid vets they can plug in but probably aren’t guys who can’t be beat out if your young guys develop as you hope. They aren’t signing for sure vet starters who would basically prevent your young guys from getting snaps.

Then you have a guy like Brown for some specific situations whether it’s pass pro or between the tackles and short yardage power running. Maybe a Doaks or Scarlett adds depth to that as the bigger more physical backs. It’s about the play at hand with these guys, not personnel stats.

Waddle will be used on some plays in a running game type of way, whether jet sweeps or quick outs and screens. Get him isolated in space where he utilizes his speed. We can attack teams in more ways this year.

If Albert Wilson is part of the team he adds that too. I think we forgot about him because he only played like half a season the last two seasons. But he’s now another year removed from his hip injury. He’ll be 29 when the season starts.

We can go big or quick now. Or a mix of both.

This year is when we kind of build a core moving forward. There will always be some changes year to year. But I think the coaches find out who are the core guys this year. Phase III is the season to become the projected perennial playoff team moving forward.

Look this is a hard conversation for anyone to have. Yes problems being pointed out by the black community are real, but no they aren’t wholly real because there are multiple other complex items integrated into these issues including a hard look at their own community and leaders. Its always easy for a group of people wanting to see it as a one side issue to ignore those parts, and that’s why the wheels of progress grind to a halt. There is no progress until EACH SIDE looks hard into their own involvement. This isn’t a one side issue and it wont be fixed without both side making serious changes.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It has to start with the black community though. If everyone else is putting the work in but you and your community isn’t, it will never work. No athlete ever won by having his ‘stunt double’ put in the work and practice. No problem was ever fixed when the person most affected decides to sit out the hard parts.

Single parenthood is killing the black community. Black children wanting to be sports stars instead of doctors, lawyers, and mechanics ruins their chances of success. Black culture glorifies violence, getting yours, and a false narrative of the world being out to get you. Black people need to focus on religion(some kind of moral code), work, and education. Life is hard, and a lot of the time it sucks. It’s a slow process of small wins. Have patience and do the right thing instead of always looking to be the victim.

Just like any other rookie, especially with a shortened offseason.

He could have made excuses like- no WRs, an oline with 3 rookies and just being put together, etc. Instead he laid it out there what he needed to do better instead of skirting the issue. I think that shows accountability and leadership. If clowns in the media don’t understand what he was saying and how it was a positive thing, then eff ’em.

Tua will either prove them wrong, and they’ll all line up to say they were really behind him the whole time, or he’ll struggle and they can all circle jerk each other about how right they were even though it’s really all guesswork since you can’t evaluate a player in just 9 games, lol.

I’m sure they worked with Tua in the same way to develop his full body throwing motion.

You could say standing flat footed Tua is in the bottom third in the league with arm strength, but when his regular motion is used he’s above average, that’s how important it is to him.

Noodle arm Pennington used timing, early release on his passes, and deadly accuracy to combat his lack of arm strength.

Tua does that too, but when you add in his coil up, he’s Pennington with better power (mobility additionally gives him more of an edge)

The ball comes out of Tua’s hand to low, he doesn’t get the ball over his head at the release point, he’s also 5’11” and 1/2, with that said he plays much smaller than his actual size.
when he gets rid of the ball quickly he does well, when he has to hold it and stay in the pocket waiting for a play to develop he gets in trouble.
he gets caught up behind these massive OL and DL guys and he simply can’t throw over them and get the ball to the wr as well.
that’s when he gets in trouble and tries to take off to make room leading to a sack.
he can’t keep throwing check downs as that will kill the offense. we will be very predictable.
the opposing D will simply take away the short stuff and make him beat them deep.

Tom Brady is 6’4″ and clearly gets the ball way over his head at his release point, he can throw over the guys in front of him with no issue.

Tua has a semi sidearm motion on every throw, i think he does that to generate ball speed, lack of power.

Boy the weather up in the NE is really being cruel for this holiday weekend. 50’s high and low 40’s overcast with rain Sat. Sun. and Mon. Then when the holiday is over on Tues., high 70’s sun and clouds. WTF?!!!

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So giving the idea of a coup an honest look, how would ‘the military’ come to this decision and implement it?

The Chiefs of Staff all get together and say we’re going to mutiny against our current Commander-in-Chief, overrule all the courts that have heard dozens of these election fraud cases and basically laughed them out of court, the Supreme Court that has chosen not to give these allegations any credence, the legislative branch that has certified the election, and unilaterally decide to overthrow the current government by force?

Then the leaders of the different branches issue various orders down the chain to what? Put the entire country under martial law? Occupy the white house, capitol building, and so forth, and put all the politicians, judges, etc under military arrest- except for people like Marjorie Taylor-Greene? Then they escort Trump to the white house, Marjorie Taylor-Greene runs Congress, we’ll figure out the Senate, and all is well?

I mean honestly, how do you see this going down?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Never gonna happen.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It would be tanks in the streets. Have no doubt the military could collectively take over the country if it wanted. Has been done in many a third world nation. Never thought anyone would be suggesting it for ours, but guess a new world these days.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You’re assuming the military would be of one mind. If our military leaders attempted a coup, why do you think our servicemen and women would then unquestioningly follow orders from those leaders who mutinied against their own commander in chief themselves? Our military wouldn’t and couldn’t take over the country that way, I believe they would fight each other first.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t saying they would to make Trump Pres again, cause find that thought ridiculous. Could see it happening in case of extraordinary civil unrest. Say after a nuclear attack or if a virus came along that killed half the people who got it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, I just assumed you were talking the circumstances in my post since you replied and your first sentence seems to be a continuation of the theme I was expressing, lol.

In the sense you are talking about, yeah I think the military is easily capable of controlling the country to a large extent if it needed to.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was just shocked that people are actually pushing for a military takeover for political reasons. But then I should have been shocked that a US Pres called a state secretary of state and asked him to “find him some votes.” Yet I wasn’t.

Griping about Tua, griping about the weather (but I hear ya, Tim!), griping about politics, etc, etc.

THIS is the only thing that matters in the universe right now (LOL 😀 )… how did Shock G come up with this gem of a piano score, and how to play it! As featured on “Doowutchyalike”…

Guys, never lose your sense of humor! Don’t allow these dark times to keep ya down…

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

As a HUGE fan of the Marx Brothers (and the Marks Brothers, LOL), I loved how Shock G emulated Groucho as Humpty Hump. It brought so much fun to music, especially rap/hip-hop, when it was turning dark with ‘gangsta’ in the late 80s/early 90s.

Tim, I’d gladly give you our weather for some cool blustery stuff. We’ve been in the mid 90’s it seems like since mid April, and we’re supposed to reach flippin 106 on Monday. It’s effing May!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You can’t do anything politically till 2024. Given your fear of an economic collapse in the next 3 years how are you preparing?

Cubs have been playing well. Pressuring to take the top spot in the NLC. I guess it’s their turn, it’s been a constant rotation this year and we’ve all had our turn, lol.

  82. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Kong is correct. If a cabal in the military decided to overthrow the government it would be a prelude to civil war. The government would have to do something extreme like say they were suspending the Constitution and all civil rights to get the military to act in a unified manner.

The extreme, right or left, live in a fantasy world. Trump is not coming back and America isn’t going to become a socialist state overnight.

None of that is to say that we’re not heading for another war. We are. The tribalism being pushed – BLM, LGBT, BIPOC – will be what gets it started. As a country, we have lost our way. We’ve allowed teachers to raise our children and they are teaching social justice instead of history. You can’t correct history, only not repeat it. America was built on inclusion, at least in aspiration if not always in practice.

Oh…one more thing – the Democratic Party is the party of supporting crime and criminals. Just going to leave that there.
