What will the 2021 Miami Dolphins Defense look like?

Two of our top 4 picks in the 2021 draft were spent on defense. The #18 pick to me was the pivotal pick because I think adding Jaelan Phillips to this defense will energize a pass rush that improved last year with the addition of Emmanuel Ogbah who led the team, and also the emergence of “AVG” Andrew Van Ginkel who really came on last season. Keep in mind Emmanuel Ogbah had 8 sacks through 9 games last season and finished with 9, so 1 sack in the last 7 games. There’s a reason, opposing teams focused on Ogbah because Shaq Lawson wasn’t getting it done. So now we have the young pass rusher we need and in exchange for Shaq Lawson, we received ILB Benardrick McKinney. Don’t underestimate this move. As much as I believe drafting Phillips was so important to our defense, I think trading for Benardrick McKinney was a big step too, though not as much as getting Phillips. Consider that Elandon Roberts is rehabbing from a knee injury very late in the season (Game 16), we needed this. In addition, McKinney will be the perfect inside backer that will continue to allow #55 to be all over the field and we’ll now have a guy who can be productive against the run and can also chase down plays to the sidelines. In round 2 pick #36, the Dolphins took who they believe to be the starting FS opposite SS Eric Rowe, Jevon Holland. Holland will be given every opportunity to win that job as good ole Bobby McCain was let go.

I think our defense already had a very promising trajectory, even before the Lawson/McKinney trade and before the draft. I like our young, strong defensive line with DE’s Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah and NT Raekwon Davis. Ogbah is the elder statesman at nearly 28 while Wilkins is nearly 26 and Davis is only 24. AVG will be 26 at season’s start and Jaelan Phillips is 22. These guys are just going to get better, and make no mistake, Jaelan Phillips is going to make this defense better. He will be a guy that must be accounted for and when there are multiple guys on your defense that fit in that category, that’s when defenses feast. I think Phillips is going to have that impact on our defense. If AVG can improve on the good work he did last year, our defense can be a real force. He played in only 46% of the defensive snaps and managed 5.5 sacks and 10 QB hits in addition to nearly 50 tackles. If he can earn more playing time and increase his production accordingly, watch out!

The secondary was already the premier unit of the defense and hopefully Jevon Holland can elevate it even further. Last season Bobby McCain played SS and played the majority of snaps there. This year Rowe will be playing SS and it’s expected that rookie Jevon Holland will play FS. Holland may also play some slot corner and nickel corner, a job Nik Needham handled most of the time last season. With two excellent cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones, this may be the best CB tandem in the NFL. Howard is the ballhawk and playmaker while Jones is your typical shutdown corner. Howard started and played in all 16 games finishing with an incredible 10 INT’s. Jones started and played 14 games last season and totaled just 2 INT’s, but as I said earlier, he does a great job of shutting down the receiver he is responsible for.

I honestly can’t wait to see this defense on the field. If Phillips lives up to the hype I’m bestowing on him this defense can be something to see. We so desperately need that player that opposing teams must pay extra special attention to and I can’t remember the last time we’ve had that. For some perspective, last season was the first season in which we accumulated more sacks on defense than we allowed in quite some time. We had 41 sacks and allowed only 34. In 2019 we allowed 58 and got only 23 of our own on defense. Still think the O-line didn’t improve??? I had to go all the way back to 2009 to find a comparison even close to last season. In 2009 we had 44 sacks and allowed 34. Our +7 from last season was impressive, imagine if we make that even better this season . . .

  1. Howard isnt the NFL s best cover cornerback, hes very good at it, but hes
more of a lay off the WR a little, trick the QB into thinking he has a open WR, and swoop in for the
    Kill shot INT.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not accurate. Man coverage doesn’t mean press. It means you cover this guy whatever the coverage is. Howard excels in press, man and in trick zones. He’s a great corner and many of you are worried about a few more million dollars.

Every time we land a great player, let’s become accountants about it. LOL

We’ll see what happens but I will be majorly bummed if he’s not on our team. You don’t fuck with special unless a player is a malcontent which he is not.

      • im not worried over a few million, but i dont think that is what Howard wants

we DO want him on the team, we didnt ask him to hold out for more money

it MIGHT be shocking when some details come out, hope we are sitting down, lol

its going to be astronomical IMO, but im hoping im wrong and its a number that wont cripple the team

if we have to gut the team for Howard, we may have to pause, and really think about if that is the best way to rebuild

      • and ill be bummed if hes not on the team too, AGREED

lets hope this gets worked out

    • i cant believe Jones is number 5, wow

i dont think he is worth it, but obviously the team did

the Dolphins will have a secondary not many can afford, lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jones is a great corner, just not a ballhawk. He covers his guy and creates lots of incomplete passes. He even admitted that his lack of INTs is ridiculous. Having him and X on boundaries most of the time challenges an offense every week. Improve our pass rush and middle coverage like I think we’re doing, and it gets even tougher. I think we’re building a monster on defense. We just haven’t seen it yet. 🙂

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Part of Howard’s problem is he is actually only getting about 12-13 mil per year for the rest of his contract because of the payout in 2019. That knocks him out of the top 10. It kind of goes back to what I was saying earlier.

Is the team paying him part of that salary in 2019 saying ok, we know you should be getting more this year, or is it just like the contract says- an agreement between the parties that even though he is getting paid in 2019 it is actually for the following years? We have no idea how those negotiations and agreements are settled.

If he wants to be the highest paid CB, we’re talking about going from a 12+ mil cap hit to a 21+ cap hit per year (obviously subject to how they work a new deal). That is not insignificant, and it’s why that ‘few more million dollars’ does matter.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Clarification- his cap hit will be anywhere from 12-14 mil each of the next 4 years.

  2. if Tua does well and his rookie contract is up, hes going to want a big raise, i mean big, thats how it goes with quarterbacks as we all know

we all want Tua to improve, and he likely will, but hes a relative bargain for an NFL starting QB, we wont have to give him a big contract until his rookie contract is up

so the team might feel they can at the very least afford Howards demands, until the Tua signing which gives them a few years to play with, maybe longer if things play out against the cap

who knows how they are looking at it, but i dont think they are happy with him holding out, he needs to get in by preseason IMO, maybe a signing will come very soon

  3. right now, the holdout is one day of OTA, not really a big deal in the whole scheme of things,

but think of other holdouts we have witnessed, they tend to get uglier by the day until something breaks

the team has to be feeling a need to wrap this up and move forward, and not let it dwell into the regular season

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I want to play here the rest of my career. I love it here. I love the fans. I love the organization. I love everyone here. I can definitely see myself playing here a long time. … The contract stuff’s the contract stuff. I really don’t care for that right now.”

    — Jerome Backer showing how to be the first player to get a fat new contract from the Phins.

  5. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim,

I have two big problems with Howard. First, we got almost nothing out of his first year of the new contract. 5 games isn’t a lot. Should we then ask him for some of that year’s money back since he really didn’t earn it? Most would say no but his amazing year last year was almost an equalizer for the terrible previous year. 1 int and 4 passes defensed isn’t awesome for even 5 games but he still got paid.

My second issue is injury. Guy has played 70% of the games he could play. He’s only played 16 full games twice. Should the highest paid player have a better injury history?

Guy’s getting paid more next year and the year after that is part of the NFL. If he can’t handle it now, will he ever? I think 2-3 years from now…he’ll want another new contract. Amazing player but not always available and can’t always keep getting top dollar. Top teams don’t pay 2 CBs more than everyone else especially once Tua starts wanting to get paid.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s being aggressive about it. He sure wasn’t when had the injuries. 6th best paid CB in the league, best paid when he signed. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s the best player on the team. Yes he’s had some injuries but he played all 16 games last year. 22 INT in 56 games. Not many have ever done that. There are also games you never hear his name because the guy he covers rarely catches the ball. He’s also an exceptional tackler.

If I’m GM I have to make it work.

  6. IF game one of the regular season starts, and Howard is not suited up, at that point ill be hoping he gets traded
if we can get him signed and ready to play game one, ill be excited to see him out there, hes a DPOY candidate IMO

buti dont want him coming in during the season after he shanghaied the team out of money and games played, and there is alot of bad blood going on

we can sign Howard, but we cant invite division in the house, because division will come in if invited

  7. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim,

To go further, the reality that Howard replicates last year is close to zero. He will probably move back to the very good CB level than continue to push historic levels consistently. I still want him but it’s likely we’d pay too 2 salary for top 10 play instead of the opposite from last year. Not my money tho and he is great

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He had 7 INTs in 12 games in 2018. 4 in his 2nd season in 2017. He’s a premier ballhawk. I don’t know what the future will be, but he’s a great player. We’re talking about $5-6 more million per. It’s not a big deal.

  8. this reminds me a little of when the Orlando Magic were struggling to sign Howard, lol

    Dwight Howard

    they didnt

  9. as long as Ross doesnt ask for federal government subsidies to sign Howard, i will be ok with whatever transpires, lol

  10. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Stanger,

I agree. One amazing year that will never likely happen again. Very aggressive when he was given free money in 2019. Not very appreciative and selfish doesn’t seem like traits that will go away after being paid since they didn’t last time lol. It irks me that he asks when he knows our cap is low too. Very selfish dude

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One thing about X is that he does want to extend his contract and have more years with the Phins. He just wants more money. Not sure ever heard of that before, but might be cause players don’t threaten holdout so early.

  12. D's avatar D says:

Want a quick run down of coverages. Man could be called shadow, press could be called assault and zone could be called bubble.

Man you shadow the man you are assigned to cover. Could start out close or you could play it deep but your focused on one guy and at the point he gets to you you are in their back pocket.

Press can start out press and fall back into either man or zone, but you basically assault the WR off the line hopefully breaking up his route or at least the timing of the route from that assault. You can then stick to the reviewer making it press-man or fall back to a zone making it press-zone.

Zone you protect your bubble. You drop back into your bubble as soon as it’s snapped. you are supposed to watch players crossing your zone as well as watch the QB and basically look to jump the route. Really got to be pretty football smart to excel in zone.

Lots more to these coverages like how ya handle it when a player crossed you zone and then leaves it. Do you stay with them switching to man or fall back into your zone and that’s all communicated among the DBs and LBs in coverage.

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We may still be trying to extend Ogbah and Gesicki this offseason as well. Not saying it has to be this way, but if reworking Howard’s deal means you have to let one of those two walk, which is it? (I understand that we could still potentially keep all 3)

Instead of complicating it, open question: If you can keep 2 of those 3 players, which two do you keep?

    • D's avatar D says:

Howard and Gesicki unless Igmahogany really steps up then I trade Howard while the value is there and resign Ogbah which would likely come a much closer to value cost.

  14. Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

The only thing Xavien Howard doesn’t have going for him are his knees. New Age alluded to it above with his injuries/playing time. It’s no secret that his knees have been an issue in the past, so he may be trying to cash in one last time before he really loses his edge.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

16 games and 16 starts last year. Nobody lasts forever. There are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL either. If you can’t play the capologist’s always find a way. 😉

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

I don’t disagree, just stating a fact about X’s knees. Few casual fans realize that about him.

For whatever it’s worth, I don’t want to part ways with X, either. This is going to be a sticky situation.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the fans and media make it even more stickier. Sound familiar? LOL

  15. i think the Jones contract made it more stickier than the fans or media

he just cant keep his eyes off of it, lol

its just out there, Howard is the second most paid cornerback on his team, it has to be eating at him that hes by far a better CB than Jones

I hear ya! The media is horrible.

    • we cant blame the media for the howard holdout and contract, thats not the main problem imo

its the fact Jones makes MORE, and Howard and his greedy new agent want more

the media could eat shit and die, and Howard wouldnt sign for less at their funeral, lol

Howard WANTS the big money, period hes holding out for more money, not less media

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

I hate to say it, but I could really see that happening with X. And should that come to fruition, I’d totally understand it. Football is a biz.

  19. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Can’t hamstring the team for one player.

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Only if he’s an elite QB. Otherwise, absolutely correct.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

And if ya want to get out from under that elite, diva player, ya draft his replacement (see Jordan Love in Green Bay as it pertains to A-Rod).

In the case of X, much is contingent upon the growth of Iggy. Generally speaking, it takes a couple/few years for CBs to get up to snuff.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua and other 1st round picks/top players will not be up for big contracts in the next couple of years.

Paying X upwards of $20M does not bother me.

    • i dont think thats enough, Ramsey is going to make 21 million

i would expect Howard to ask for anywhere from 25-30 million, and yes, that is shocking, but since Howard wants to renegotiate so soon, he obviously has already done everything he can , so far, to maximize his salary, the final part will be the signing of the gigantic contract

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Honestly, it doesn’t bother me either. However, I don’t want to see a MEGA, long-term contract. If X isn’t happy with his 5-year contract, then sign him to a 3-year, front-loaded contract that we can get away from in year 3 (making it easier to trade him if he fails us).

  21. you guys are hilarious blaming the media

is howard holding out for less media? lol no,

he wants big time money, the most on the team. the most in the NFL is what he wants and the team will have to work it out

Personally, I think EVERYTHING hinges upon the growth of Noah Igbinoghene. If Iggy emerges between now and the beginning of the regular season, I foresee a trade of either X or Byron.

X and Byron, combined, are eating WAY too much cap space… and we drafted Iggy in the 1st round last year.

What’s more, we’re trying to re-sign Gesicki and Ogbah.

  25. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Make X an offer of what he’s worth!
If he turns it down, trade him to the fricken Stej! and let him die on the vine!

  26. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I wonder how much the NEW defense X played in in 2020 contributed to his stats/success?

It’s never about one player in a team sport.

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

The Boyer Defense probably helped X a lot… and he’s returning to it, with another EDGE in the fold with Jaelan Phillips to rush the passer.

There is the potential for X to repeat his performance of last year, though QBs would be really stupid to throw it to his half of the field.

See, X is so great in zone-coverage that he becomes a ‘center-fielder’. He’s worth it IMO, just not a long-term contract, being he wants to play hardball.

3-year contract, front-loaded, with an out in the 3rd year.

If he won’t honor his 5-year contract, give him a 3-year contract.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

I highly doubt X’s knees last past a 3-year contract.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And to press the point, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen an aggressive, where the fuck are they coming from, in your face defense from the Dolphins until last year.

I loved the effort, but still not enough talent. The D scheme maximized everyone’s play/success on the field.

It wasn’t just X doing his thing. It was the team D/effort that allowed him to thrive.

Lightning in control in the 3rd period, will tie the series up.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Teams around the league bitching about the Lightning being 20m over the cap. They’re using the injured list as a way to circumvent the cap, by putting guys on it during the year, then bringing them back for the playoffs, when the cap doesn’t count

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I saw something about that, either up the board or a headline, but I haven’t looked into any details. It seems like that’s a pretty big loophole if it’s true at face value.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I mean, the cap is like 80 mil, that’s an extra 25%, which is kinda crazy.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

2 years in a row they’ve done it, basically loopholed their way to a title last year.

They’ve been cleared of it, but people want to close the loophole as it goes against the integrity of the game

Not true….and think I support you in agreeing he has talent.

I don’t recall much of 2018 and I’m not sure it’s relevant today. The defense I saw last year contributed to his success and his talent contributed to the Ds success.

The D has filled several holes this year, I hope. So, what happens if no one throws against him or can and he has 5 ints?

I agree with David, I think he’s the better CB on the team and is tweaked he’s not being paid more than Jones. The Dolphins need to make this right in that regard, imo.

For those who don’t know, if we trade a player, we don’t eat DEAD $$$.

We do eat dead money, and as the article you provided shows its due against the cap at the time of the trade

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In a trade in the NFL all signing bonus money accelerates onto the cap of the team trading the player, just like as if the player was cut.

There’s no dead money carryover, because it’s already paid when the trade is made

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So if I’m reading that right, the unpaid portion of the signing bonus counts towards the current year of the team trading the player. We’ve paid about 3.5 of his 7 mil signing bonus, so if we trade him this year, he counts as 3.5 against our 2021 cap, right?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Correct, if you’re using paid to mean paid against the cap.

Haven’t looked at Xs contract, but in general, if you have a 4 year contract with a 20m signing bonus 5m against the cap per year, so if you trade him after say 2 years any guaranteed money belongs to the new team and the 10m cap hit not yet counted goes to the old team

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was wrong on this. It depends on the contract but if it’s a considerable deal there is always dead cap when moving a player.

The only time I really focus on the cap is when I think it’s about overpaying. Like with Landry. 😉

STEVE, as for the bitching about being over the cap, the rules are exactly the same for ALL TEAMS!! If some of the teams don’t like these current rules, they should introduce a rules change during the annual owner’s meetings. The fact that no such rules change has been put up for a vote tells me that the vast majority of the team owners are happy with the status quo.

Btw we eat dead money on a trade. The only thing we don’t eat is contract money. Trades we wouldn’t take as bit a hit but we do take a hit for the that year guaranteed money.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’d take a hit for that year’s guaranteed money, if the trade was made at the trade deadline or after the season, but not now, the new team assumes the current contract

      • D's avatar D says:

I thought ya had to do it before June 12 deadline to get them to take on the this year contract guarantees.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

After the season started, not after the season

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think so D, doesn’t make any sense to me why there would be a June 12th deadline.

I mean you made a trade, the new team assumes any future payouts, unless some stipulation was put in the trade

  40. D's avatar D says:

Oh and as for the indoctrination of students, its a very real thing.

My step-daughter went to George Washington University in DC to study both law and political science. She went in with a balance of conservative and liberal ideals, she by the first semester was starting to be fully liberal biased, and pretty much a socialist, as she started really really supporting Bernie and the different topics she would be very passionate about were deeply rooted in socialism.

By end of year 2 she claims membership in both BLM and Antifa, is posting very progressive liberal rhetoric on Facebook, etc. Now i applaud her for being herself, finding her own way, but i cant help but know, the girl who i knew all of her life has been drastically steered in this direction.

We never pushed any conservative ideals on her at home, other than observations she may have made about our own political beliefs, but I’m not even a strong right leaning conservative, i am more fiscal conservative and maybe slightly right of center socially, but again, nothing pushed on her, but it certainly feels like it is now.

    • D's avatar D says:

For the record, i do admire the passion and idealistic mindset she has, but the progressives have snatched that up and very much have her brainwashed. She even comes home and talks to my little kids, one 12 year old and one 8 about these political things and they cant even understand what the hell she is really talking about, but she is already pretty much pushing it on them.

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It’s not just college. My oldest kid starting spouting that nonsense almost 5 years ago and she’ll be going into sixth grade next year. But, I will say it started to backfire because she’s starting to go the other way with her comments in the last year. I guess you can only hear how bad of a person you are for being white so much before it starts to get old.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah, my 8 year old, i think was 2 years ago told me that Obama was the greatest President ever, and i mean how does a 6 year old know anything about that kind of stuff so you know she was told it.

Yeah my kids are pretty hard to manipulate as well and probably because of my disdain for politicians in general it wont be as easy for him to trust what they say about political stuff either. We will see, he is only 12 but right now seems to have a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to political talk.

  41. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Dead money is mainly for bonuses already paid that the cap cost hasn’t been charged.

Pay 20m in bonuses in year 1, but only 5m is going against year 1 cap, so 15m is cap cost not yet counted against the cap, so if the player is cut or traded you still have to count it against the cap, therefore dead money is cap costs for players no longer on the team

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My 13 year old half sister is into blm, my dad can’t tell her shit, she knows everything…they’ve really filled her mind with some bad shit, to where she tried to commit suicide.

I was watching something online when they had the boat parades for Trump. And this one lady was saying the reason you don’t see any Biden supporters out on the water with their boats is because they don’t give boats out for free. LMAO!

  44. D's avatar D says:

Maybe im thinking June 12th the cut deadline where if it happens after then they can defer the cap hit to the next year. Still i think maybe its just new league year that’s the line where the current team eats that years dead money unless negotiated in the trade details. I think we would be on the hook for it. Lemme check over the cap they outline all that on their web page.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Check if you want, but dead money is basically any money you paid, that hasn’t counted against your cap

    • D's avatar D says:

No there is a dealine and its for both cut and trade on June 1st. I thought i remembered that right.

      • D's avatar D says:

So dead money if traded pre-June 1 is 4.2mil, but since we are past June 1 is 1.4mil dead money since some of the guarantees are already paid and therefore not counted against cap.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Deadline for what?

If you paid it you have to count it against the cap, a deadline is irrelevant for this discussion, because all it might do is allow you to count it in future years, but you still have to count it against the cap at some point

      • D's avatar D says:

I think dead cap is the money in guarantees not yet paid, like for example the 1.4mil was the prorated signing bonus. Im not sure what the 4.2 was, was it this years guarantees then deferred to the next year or what. Check it out, I’m not making it up. Overthecap has it broken down where you use the drop down on the side and it will tell you the cap hits post and pre June 1 on both trades and cuts. Like i said i thought i remembers a breakdown sometime in June, that’s all i was saying the rest is Overthecap’s numbers/facts.

  45. D's avatar D says:

Either way the trade if it happens is 1.4 in dead cap, so he is fully tradeable without any significant loss monetarily speaking, hit on the over strength of the D would be significant though.

  46. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

X has guaranteed money this year of 13.5m and 2.775m in cap charges for money already paid, if traded the new team would likely assume the 13.5m in guarantees, but we’re still on the hook for 2.775m this year in dead money plus next year for 4.2m in dead money.

Not sure what you’re trying to say D

    • D's avatar D says:

According to Overthecap, that’s correct pre June 1, post June 1, its 1.4, which is the prorated signing bonus, the rest of the 4.2 im assuming is deferred to next year, as that’s generally what the post June 1 cuts do. Pre June 1 some of the cap hit is on this year, post June 1 its on next year. I dunno man, argue with Overthecap its coming straight from their web page, which i do trust.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think the hit is still 4.2 no matter how ya slice it, but the dead money is moved to next year not this year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes 1.4 is the prorated signing bonus, that is due this year no matter what against the cap.

        It’s also 1.4m for each of the next 3 years, so 1.4m X 3 = 4.2m

4.2m + 1.4m = 5.6m in dead money that has to be paid at some point

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah it just clicked in my head what you were saying and what i was saying which was the same thing, i was just talking specific to this year and you were talking overall.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Simply put: Dead money is the salary cap space a team must allocate to a particular player who has been cut. It serves as a device to ensure that every dollar a team has paid players is eventually allocated to that team’s salary cap.

    2nd sentence says it all

    • D's avatar D says:

I get that, but the June 1st deadline is about what year the cap hit falls on. Wouldnt be 4.2 this year it would be 1.4, and then 2.8 the next

      • D's avatar D says:

Seems like we might be arguing two different things

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes we are, I’m talking about dead money overall, you’re talking about dead money this year, but you’re also putting in stuff that isn’t true

Like: I think dead cap is the money in guarantees not yet paid

      • D's avatar D says:

Well granted i did say i thought, because i was trying to bridge the gaps between our arguments but postulating on why both of us had different numbers, i know your a contract/cap guy so i didn’t feel like you were wrong i just couldn’t figure out why the source i had, which i trust and your information, which i trust wasn’t matching.

    • D's avatar D says:

I postulated poorly, lol what can i say my perfection is only skin deep it seems lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, sometimes having 1 fact out of place can cause several extra posts by all involved.

Not a cap expert, just have simple/general cap facts knowledge and know it generally well, the details and stipulations bore me, so don’t pay attention to that stuff.

If I can’t simplify it I don’t care about it or understand it, but certain facts are paramount, like the basic definition of what dead money actually is

A lot of you are taking the side of big biz. I’m for the individual. Just saying. 😉
    —————–
I’m for the player 99% of the time. However, one man can over-eat, thus taking food from others (salary cap)… we’re trying to build a solid all-around team.

What I’m proposing should be satisfactory to both the player and the team: 3-year deal, front-loaded contract, that makes X the highest paid CB in the NFL. X gets PAID, and we beat his knees going out by making it a 3-year deal instead of a 5-year deal.

X is worth the $$$, IMO. Like I said, I’m for the player 99% of the time and X is no exception. I just don’t want to be entering year 4 or 5 of a contract where we’re married to his knee issues.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we have any aspirations of doing anything this year in the playoffs X must be happy, healthy and a part of it.

Why were our D stats somewhat poor, but our points against so good? Turnovers and 3rd down D, which X was a big part of, but so was the scheme.

The scheme allows guys like X to get 10 ints, but if X isn’t there and someone like a Byron Jones clone is in his place he isn’t getting 10, so the success between X and our scheme is joined at the hip

    • D's avatar D says:

Well with the concerns related to his knees, thats my argument right there. I give him bonuses on current contract that COULD equal to what he wants to get, maybe even a bit more and if he plays X number of games and makes X number of INTs or whatever metric, etc then i boost that salary to where it needs to be. I use the concern of the knees to relate the risk we are putting in by upping his money to the risk we would be paying him that money and him sitting on the bench or on the IR. I also could re-do the contract to give him a few more guarantees in his first year ot two for security, but i wouldn’t overall change the contract or do an extension right now, i think that’s probably bad policy and precedence.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Whatever it takes to keep X happy, while also being rational for the team.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t care about precedence as it applies to other non elite players, as it means nothing to them, but it might to someone like Tua and Waddle some day.

Some good points on the knees, that would need to be included or factored in with some not so easy to achieve bonuses.

He wants to be paid as the top cb in the league, he needs to play that way every year and be on the field, the performance bonuses would be win win.

Don’t really like stat based bonuses though for a CB, because he could be total lockdown, but low passes his way, so low ints.

Just come up with some metric like a combo of team stats vs personal stats

Well i mean there isnt anything illegal they could do anything about but i get what your saying, that guy is about as untalented as they come, maybe his art will get laughed off the stage by the true critics and expose the potentially nefarious one for paying big money for what amounts to a kindergartners finger-painting project.

      • D's avatar D says:

I guess i went a little heavy on the criticism of the quality of the work. Its pretty decent, but it seems quite commercial in quality, kind like a emotionless Jackson Pollock. To me, the fact he did some of it by blowing paint through a straw, it wouldn’t interest me at all. In that sense its a neat method for creating some of those design but it doesnt have the underlying passion that a true artist brings. Its like any other commercial art work i have seen just done a little differently, the finish product doesn’t do much for me, much the same that other commercial artwork doesn’t. Felt like he deserved a bit more of my opinion on it that i first threw out there dogging it as a kids finger-painting product lol.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, nothing illegal about it but the motive is so obvious to me.

      • D's avatar D says:

You can paint/create for the rest of the world or you can create for yourself and have some of the world captured by it, to me that’s the main difference in commercial quality vs true artistry. Id rather see someone’s hideous work of passion than anything commercial grade. Sorry its kind of a big deal to me what’s called art and what’s not.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  50. D's avatar D says:

Incidentally i was a painter for a while in my life and i made some really nice, but very boring things because i was taught to paint/create scenery that was appealing to others, i didn’t really find my love of it until i broke away from that, and really that’s not a teachable anyways so i mean, thanks to the lady who taught me the basics, but at a point in time i was held back by it too. I mean a bunch of people can replicate a picture of scene in a different medium but not many people can feel it and transfer those feelings to the paint, by subtle things like paint strokes or alternate painting methodologies.

I see the person and the emotion in the Pollock, one of my favorites. I feel the darkness in “Starry Night”, by Van Gogh, another my favorite artists, and likely my favorite single painting. You feel like you are sitting there in that place and time when you look at “A Sunday Afternoon” by Seurat. Yeah each has really unique styles, but that’s not what makes those paintings great, its what makes them interesting, the great is from what’s captured ion that painting.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m an artist too, but really haven’t done anything in a while, because art school really soured me and killed the love for me. Although I’ve been trying to get into watercolors lately
I think Jackson Pollock as trash, but I could be suffering from PDS. People calling what he did as art really angries up my blood. I’m fully aware of my bias and I don’t care. lol.

      • D's avatar D says:

Lol i read between the splatters. Fully admit its not for everyone and i have seen other artist i saw that did similar things and it just couldn’t replicate what i felt from the first Pollock i saw. I think art can be a personal experience so its completely understandable to not have the same connection to the art as another person, it just matters that someone does have a connection to it i think.

Like i said, trash it might be, but to me its trash with loads of passion. He was not a good person, and i understand if people just dont like him because they feel like he was a drunken jerk, but i kind of see drunken jerk in those paintings, its not always a positive feeling you get from his stuff in my opinion, but the fact i get something from it and can pretty much see the different mindsets he was in when he made different pieces, that’s what its all about to me, otherwise its just paint slung on a canvas.

I think he is the artist i feel the most connection to emotionally about his work because its all out there on the canvas, others i like were more subtle and got their point across but there is something about Pollock to me that in your face and i really like that.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t know shit about art, but you seem passionate about why you don’t like Jackson Pollock, I laud that honest reasoning

The paintings seem a little too commercial

I haven’t painted in a very long time, i have done some digital art stuff and i like it ok but i dont have the same connection i had when painting on canvas. Life kind of got in the way of the time i need to really create. Is what it is, id kind of like to get back into it, obviously i still feel very strongly about it but finding the time is hard right now.

    • D's avatar D says:

I could go on all day about what i get from Pollock’s painting but they just seem very real and true to life, chaotic with bits of organization at times in the midst of that chaos and i can relate to that feeling.

I should be able to voice an opinion about it. My daughter was mortified and begged me not to. She said it would get her in trouble with the program, may jeopardize her standing in the program(complete BS) and wouldn’t do any good anyway. I still get pissed about it. College should be a time where you are exposed to all sorts of new and different ideas and thoughts…but it shouldn’t be an indoctrination into any of them. It should be a time for exploration and questioning….everything.

On the pronoun thing, we are expected to use preferred pronouns in our documentation. So, I asked my supervisor once if a client with a fixed delusion tells me they are Jesus Christ or an angel or Hitler….all of which have happened….should I document their “preferred identity” as such? I was told that wouldn’t be appropriate as they are based in delusional thinking. Just like a pro athlete getting a contract and fans complaining that they were “overpaid”. Then, other fans say they were paid what the market allowed. The same goes for art. I wouldn’t pay a dollar for a Van Gogh painting, for instance. They look like something a 5th grader would do…but they are “worth” what somebody will pay for them.

    • D's avatar D says:

When it comes to buying or selling art that’s the deal. I wouldn’t but one either even if I had the means because it’s not about the ownership to me is about the appreciation. Some treat it like an investment which I guess I get that, it’s just not for me. No way I would buy a piece of art then lock it away where I couldn’t appreciate it.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Impressionism, post impressionism, and other movement toward abstraction were responses to the “camera”. Replication was no longer a variable driving art … but artists were more interested in the developing sciences of optics, thus trying to replicate how the human eye experiences rather than how the human mind remembers. Van Gogh is not about replication, but about experimentation with color and optics and how they relate to emotion. I’m a big fan of later abstract expressionism for this very reason.

I’m sure the deal will be for all of him. *rimshot*

Thought above you were talking about cutting people to free up cap space to extend. Must have read it wrong.

As to a holdout….. each one is different. Take X. For him is the great 2020 season. Against him is he just signed a long-term contract. I’d be a bit fish or cut bait with him, but might give him something.
    —————
I proposed my deal regarding X last night and spoke to it further today up the board. I don’t want to sound like a broken record already, but for you, I will… 3-year deal, front-loaded contract, making him the highest paid CB in the NFL.

If he’s not happy with his 5-year deal, we’ll just have to make it a 3-year deal, beating his knees before they give out on him. Win-win.

I’m really not the type to have to repeat myself dozens of times! LOL

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

The idea is that we can make X the highest-paid CB in the NFL, but he loses the 5-year contract we’d previously rewarded him. WINNING!

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

If X is unsatisfied with this proposed contract, it’s then time to trade him while his value is sky-high.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

It’s been ‘guesstimated’ that we could get two first-round Draft picks for him if we were to trade him while he’s a hot commodity.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s got 4 years left on his contract and you would like to offer him top money for 3 instead. Have no problem with that suggestion. And yes trading X is a possible…. we’ll see what happens.

And if you ever feel the need to not repeat something with me…. no problem. No do not read every post on the board. If I miss some nuggets of wisdom way it is.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Seriously, I had thought that everyone (we’re all regulars) here reads most everything posted here… not like it’s reading “War and Peace” on any given day. Doesn’t take much to get caught back up, if one merely posted yesterday, no?

As I stated, I have no problem having to repeat something for you, man. But it would have saved a lot of time for all of us had one briefly read through the previous posts since one left yesterday, that’s all.

Otherwise, it kind of makes one feel as though one isn’t being read at all. I mean, most of us actually read everything that’s been posted, in order to catch up. I feel it’s a simple courtesy, acknowledging our fellow bloggers with their poignant thoughts.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

While most people here may have read all 2,300 posts since Mike E’s last article, I am not one of them. If we make that mandatory for all who come to the board, seems a lot to ask. I do catch most though. And only a few “look what this guy said last night” posts come out.

  66. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Man, I’m excited to see (Waddle) go to work. Like you said, I see myself in him; so anything I can do to help him get going right now, I’m here for him. And then to see somebody that can work the slot just as well as me on the other side of the ball, and we’re all just going at it; it will be a lot of fun.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have a lot of speed on offense will Wilson back in the mix and the additions of Fuller and Waddle.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And Grant has serious jets as well, if he makes the final roster.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah Bowden too. We also picked up Robert Foster who’s a speed guy but not sure his overall game is good enough.

How many of y’all listen to music in the background while commenting here on the FMU?

I think it’s time for the Dolphins to keep their best players, keep developing the young guys and build a championship quality team. Not keep trading and adding picks. At some point those picks need to be players on the field, not keep collecting picks for the future. The time is now to get into the competitive mix.

who will be the surprise cut/trade this year?

my monies on Preston Williams, he’s big but he doesn’t have the speed 4.6 and struggles to stay healthy, you can’t depend on him for a full season.
with our wr room loaded with speed and talent, not to mention we have Parker and Gesicki who both are in the same mold as williams, i think he’s expendable.

had horrible experiences there, i wont be repeating them, everything seemed broken, and closed. even the motorized steps coming off the airplane were broken, and the tarmac was flooded with a huge water leak, lol SMH

they dont compare to the keys either, which was the question, lol

i love the keys, very nice , except for key west is too crowded for such a tiny island
