What will the 2021 Miami Dolphins Special Teams look like?

Gone is P Matt Haack. The Dolphins signed the former Carolina Panthers punter Michael Palardy instead of re-signing the steady Matt Haack. Palardy has a higher average per punt than Haack at 46.0 compared to the 44.7 Haack had as Dolphins punter. The important guy who is returning is All Pro kicker Jason Sanders. Sanders had a fantastic season converting 36 of 39 FG tries. His kickoffs were nearly always touchbacks. MIchael Palardy has a big leg so we’ll see if we improve our field position with him booming the ball.

Jakeem Grant shared return duties last year with rookies WR Malcolm Perry and DB Noah Igbinoghene. Grant was electric, but you held your breath until he actually cradled the ball when receiving the punt or kickoff. This year I believe Jaylen Waddle will be incorporated into the game and may even make Jakeem Grant expendable. Time will tell on that one. Waddle is so explosive in his own right and I would imagine he’s a lot more sure handed than Grant has been. Still, Jakeem Grant may stick here just because of his electric punt return ability, he averaged 11.4 yards on his punt returns last season. I do believe Waddle will challenge here and Malcolm Perry may also.

Blake Ferguson returns as the long snapper after a fine rookie season. I don’t recall any Ferguson miscues last season so I’ll leave it that he did his job well. The big questions going forward is can Jason Sanders follow up hos All Pro season with another? Who will be the primary return man and if it’s rookie Jaylen Waddle, does Jakeem Grant make the cut? Also, if Jaylen Waddle is the primary return man, do they scale back his work at WR? It’s a lot to ask from a rookie because they have double work, but I would hope Waddle is up to task. Personally, I hope Waddle is part of our return game, I can’t wait to see that. Will new punter Michael Palardy help our field position battle? Haack was unspectacular last season but I thought he did a good job here. Obviously the Dolphins were looking for better and hopefully that’s what we get from Palardy.

The Xavien Howard holdout may affect DB Noah Igbinoghene the most. If he’s the guy that will be counted on to replace Howard, I’d almost guarantee his days as a return man are done for at least this season. He will be working hard to be up to snuff filling some tremendous shoes if the Dolphins can’t work things out with Xavien Howard. This is a huge issue to keep an eye on. You don’t replace 10 INT’s and in general shut down coverage easily and we all saw Iggy struggle last season. I don’t doubt Iggy will be better, but it’s a lot to step in for arguably one of the best corners in the NFL. We’ll see what happens on that front.

I’m not worried about the Howard situation. We can bounce back either way and if not we seem to have a FO that will go out and get us what we need to fix it. I prefer to keep him but i also don’t want him to start the dominos falling and we wind up losing the team trying to keep him.

      • Mike E. says:

I’m worried. It can significantly change our defense if he’s gone. It’s not always so easy to just find a replacement guy this late in the game.

      • Ken says:

Losing the best defensive player in football would be a serious blow to this team but I don’t think it’s going to happen

      • D says:

I dont discounts his importance, but if you go nuts trying to keep him you could start the process of losing others and you might lose more trying to keep him which overall would be worse. The team knows his values, they wont let him leave unless it would be better for the team than giving into to whatever he wants to keep him.

  1. Ken says:

    Sanders for MVP

  2. Mike E. says:

D – I agree with you as far as I don’t want us to let players run the team. It’s a tough line to tread because the NFL is so unique with the way contracts are treated. They’re basically disposable, which means when a player has some leverage, I get why they want to use that. X figures if they frontload my contract now, at least I get what I’m worth now and I’ll worry about the rest when we get there. In some ways, it works out well for the team too because if they can pay him while he’s worth the money, maybe they can make it easier to let him go later on w/o penalty to the teams cap.

  4. steveccnv says:

Waddle is the key, if he’s the PR we won’t miss a beat, when Grant is gone

  5. steveccnv says:

If Hollins stays he’ll be a gunner, otherwise we may see Holland and/or Brandon Jones or someone else depending on what WRs we keep

  6. steveccnv says:

Any surprise Sanders had a great year? Ferguson was steady to great on FGs, and they laughed, when he was drafted.

    Who’s laughing now

  7. steveccnv says:

That’s all I got at the moment for STs

  8. D says:

Weeeee hurricane season has started lol. Ready to play the Me, Wyoming, or BBM game? Right now this one looks like a Me lol

Do we really believe that we will have the #6 pick returning punts? IDTS

Steve, thanks for catching the Cozumel/Mexico deal. When I said Mexico, I was thinking back when I was in San Diego for a month and went to Tijuana a couple times. lol

    • steveccnv says:

Lol, been to Cozumel 3 times the last to go diving.

Got certified in Lake Tahoe in the snow in December, then went to Cancun the following February and did a dive, then Cozumel a couple days later

“Grant was electric, but he you held your breath until he actually cradled the ball when receiving the punt or kickoff.”

Great line Mike E and really sums it up. Unfortunately goes for his pass catching as well. But oh man is he a joy to watch in once the ball is secure. Not sure that is enough though. To keep him would have to keep an extra (7th) WR to my mind.

  12. stangerx says:

Could you see Vince Lombardi telling his players to do this in their month off before camp? Flores might be a real modern type of coach, and one who attracts free agents. Word gets around.
    ——————————————-

“My message to the players is to go on vacation, to take this time to recharge, get some rest; spend time with their families – friends, families, loved ones. I think you need that balance in your life, so that was my message to these guys this morning; but at the same time, keep themselves in some type of condition, train.”

“Obviously this is what they love to do and if they want to be at the top of their game come training camp, they’re going to have to train. But I think it’s a good time for them to get away and recharge and come back refreshed with a lot of energy and ready to go.”

    • steveccnv says:

If you don’t stay in shape you’ll die in a Miami training camp, so like in high school, when I could stay up as long as I wanted, but…had to get up for school in the morning

Pay me now or pay me later

      • stangerx says:

Part that got me was “keep themselves in some type of condition.” Could have been “show up in shape or you will die.” But it wasn’t.

  13. Randy says:

The X situation doesn’t worry me much. Stay or go, I think Flores has been establishing a really good system. It is most certainly reliant on very good coverage….so having great DBs is big. But, I think Iggy has a chance to be pretty solid if not great. And, I don’t think we’ll be getting 2-4 more years of that sort of performance from X. I think he’ll come back to Earth next year. He’ll still be a very good CB, but chances are he just had his career year last year. I hope they keep him….and it would suck to lose him….but I’m not too worried about it. It’s not like these guys are shy about trading away talent if they think it will benefit the team. They have been upgrading the DB corp pretty consistently.

    • Ken says:

I think you can expect at least 2 more years of high performance from X. It’s not like last year was an aberration he has been playing at a high level over several years

      • stangerx says:

Same time chances are other teams think that as well. Gotta balance with what we could get. He’s backed up by a first round pick.

  14. stangerx says:

Something to know if comes into play with X:

“The 2020 labor deal imposes fines in the amount of $50,000 per day on training-camp holdouts, and for players operating under their second contract, the fines cannot be waived.”

  15. Randy says:

    Ken,
I want to keep him. I agree he’s a very good player. I just think given his injury history, his relative age, his penchant to take risks a little and just the law of averages is that he will be come back to Earth. I think teams will adjust too. Having 2, or 3 even, very good CBs is the real key, but I suspect teams will play X…and our defensive backfield…a little different this year.
    ***
Last year was by far his best year. 22 INTs total and 10 last year. 55 total PD and 20 last year. He has been good…no doubt…but last year was way better than any other. And, only 2 complete seasons out of 5. Absolutely keep him if you can…I’m just not sweating it. Flores will figure it out.

    • steveccnv says:

Pretty much agree, but only think he comes back to earth, if they don’t throw his way or injury

    • Mike E. says:

He did have his best year last year, but our defense overall was better last year too, and I expect it to take a step forward this year too. That can only help X be as good as last season. Odd are he wouldn’t have as many INT’s because teams will probably avoid him more often and try other weaknesses, but it’s still a better defense with him opposite Jones.

  16. Randy says:

10 INTs isn’t done very often. Wasn’t X the first to do it in, like, a decade? It’s not all about the INTs, of course, but he ain’t gonna be getting 10 every year for the next 4 years. I’ll bet anybody on that. Lol
    ***
I’m not arguing that he’s a really good player. I was just saying I’m not getting worried about losing him…for a number of reasons. Commenting on the situation more than on X.
    ***
X is best in off coverage. He is also a beast on deep throws. There are things teams can do to adjust…..or just keep throwing at him more than Jones. Also, I’m hoping for a better and quicker pass rush this season…which should means shorter, quicker passes and fewer deep passes….where X excels.

    Ken,

    ——————
I disagree. Per Solomon Wilcotts who I agree with on this. The key to X’s success is that Miami plays man bump and run. X is always lined on the other teams no. 1 WR in one on one so teams will continue to throw at X because you always go to your number 1 WR unless you double cover him which Miami doesn’t do. In essence the key to X’s success is that he is just that good at taking away the other teams number 1 WR all by himself

    • steveccnv says:

Nuke didn’t get a pass thrown his way in the first half, then they started throwing his way and he got 3 bad PIs (piss is right)

      • steveccnv says:

He will get some thrown his way, they may be more careful and less often.

He did get some ints on ducks thrown to other WRs.

Think Iggy has similar hands, but won’t have the position

      • Ken says:

As long as he keeps lining up on number 1 they will continue to throw his way which leads to int opportunities and that was Wilcotts point

  18. Randy says:

    Ken,
Man coverage yes but not press man. I am just going by what I felt I saw last year, but it sure looked like X was playing more off coverage and not lining up on the LOS. I’ll just go with I’m wrong on that because I have no idea what the stats say. X is very good no matter how you slice it!

    • Ken says:

We play press. Sometimes X looks like he is off because he is baiting aQB to throw his way. He has such great closing speed to the ball then when you think your guy is open he really isn’t

      • CavalierKong says:

That is not how press coverage works. The whole point of press is to disrupt the route, usually with a jam. If he’s off the receiver, it’s not press coverage.

  19. New Age says:

I completely agree with Randy. X is coming back down to earth but I still expect out D to be top 5.

  20. steveccnv says:

Could see X having a better year, but not without a new contract

He saved our ass plenty of times with ints

Having more pressure would also create the ints, with less time to cover

If the O gets rolling our opponents will be more likely to take chances too

Lots of factors go into it, and why it’s a team sport

    • stangerx says:

Can’t see X having a better year as far as more INTs. Could see him having a better year cause his side of the field is a no throw zone.

  21. stangerx says:

In the past some people have taken jabs at Byron Jones for not having the year he should have. But if he was that bad why were other teams throwing at X enough to get all those INTs? Unless missed it, not like one of them was matching up with the other team’s Alpha wideout each week like Revis used to do.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Jones doesn’t get a lot of picks but he’s a blanket in coverage despite giving up a few plays last year he pretty much shuts his man out all day long it’s why we paid him so much to come here.

      • stangerx says:

So then X should send Jones a Harry & David gift basket after he signs his next contract. And pretty sure there will be one…. Q is with what team.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

I think things will get worked out with X but he indeed owes Jones some gratitude for last year. Jones going into last year and previously was a better known commodity throughout the league. X saw more balls come his way in large part because the QB a lot of times had to throw it somewhere so pick your poison. Jones blankets his man so it’s harder to throw his way but X is a beast closer and makes QB decisions look much worse.

  22. son of a son of a shula says:

When she sings “killing me softly” you replace that with – Solomon Kindley

    Solomon Kindley with his song,
    Solomon Kindley with his song
Telling my whole life with his song
    Solomon Kindley with his song

    Enjoy!

  23. son of a son of a shula says:

X baits the QB, he really is a master baiter

  24. CavalierKong says:

I’d be curious to see the numbers on how often X was on the #1 receiver. I know Jones also covered the #1 guy a lot as well, and I remember more than once thinking to myself “why the heck don’t we have X on him” when Jones would get roasted.

Memory is funny though. That might stick out in my memory, but the numbers could easily still say X had the #1 the majority of the time.

  25. son of a son of a shula says:

(Thinking maybe start the weekend off with an lol from the guys maybe. Couple beers get some dinner, relax and chill. Got a couple of tunes loaded up for later, some good shit, but instead I get harangued by a sordid mob, it’s ok)

    • manitobafinfan says:

Wouldn’t have said anything if ya just posted the song , without the gay remake 😊

      • son of a son of a shula says:

I thought that fucked up comma you put in there was a spot on my phone, I kept scratching at it lol
But anyway I wouldn’t be posting that song ordinarily just that
Guess I love some Mount Kindley there I said it. Love that he wears 66.

  26. CavalierKong says:

X is a player who has a knack for the ball, reminds me of Ed Reed. He gambles and baits, which is coupled with excellent hands and talent. I can’t see him topping last year, but I can see 6-8 INTs along with low (good) overall numbers in passes thrown his way.

    • manitobafinfan says:

I’m with ya , happy to have him but think could adapt well with who we brung

      • CavalierKong says:

I hope we can reach an agreement, but I don’t think the team is going to pay him 21+ mil a year, so it may just depend on what exactly Howard wants. I think we’ll be fine if we have to trade him. We are loaded at the position.

But you can’t teach that ‘knack’ for the ball, and X has that in spades. 11 times last year, X created an extra possession for us. I’m hoping he’ll accept a rework that makes him the highest paid on the team at 17 mil or so.

  27. manitobafinfan says:

And with a QB on a rookie contract, if ya wanna up his pay we okay this and next year fer sure

  28. D says:

All our DB’s play a combination of press-man, off man, press-zone (though not as frequent) and zone. X plays them all pretty well because he has good closing speed, good physical build, and is pretty football smart. He is a very well rounded CB. He does tend to get worked by some of the bigger receivers, because he is physical but i think not quite as physical as some of the receivers out there, Julio Jones for one stands out to me. So press is a strong suit still but maybe weakest of all his abilities and will probably begin to become a liability with the injuries and just age creeping up ton him

    • D says:

One option for him eventually would be to swap to FS and let his liability kinda not hold him back. He is smart enough about playing the field, he should be able to transition to that later in his career.

  29. manitobafinfan says:

Son : just BB. And yeah 66 is a good # , makes him appear even larger 👍

    • son of a son of a shula says:

You’re probably too young to remember Larry Little lol

      • manitobafinfan says:

I know the name and pretty sure we are same age , but at the time he was playing I wasn’t paying too much attention to OL

  30. stangerx says:

No one wants to talk about it, but what is X worth in a trade? I’m thinking a first and a second, but that’s just off the top of my head.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

I can’t let myself go there but it should be 2 firsts

    • CavalierKong says:

I’d say a 1st and a 2nd is the starting point. Frankly, I think it should be two 1sts. Anything less would be uncivilized.

      • stangerx says:

What is rarely talked about is what team? A 1st and 2nd from the Jets is a lot different than from the Chiefs.

      • CavalierKong says:

I would never trade him to a rival especially in the division, but I understand the point you’re making. Honestly, I doubt we really look at the ‘likely’ position of the picks unless we have a bunch of suitors- just my gut, based on absolutely nothing, lol.

But if it’s the Bucs or the Lions offering similar comp, then obviously you go with the Lions.

  31. son of a son of a shula says:

Doggy you can come out from under the couch now that bully is gone.

Lol, thinks he’ll whoop the dogs ass lol good luck

Just a virtual world after all. In the past used to get a chuckle out of people talking about how they were gonna beat the shiot out of ORob.

So M13 is kind of like Doogie Howser?
    —————
LOL, not sure I’d go for the Doogie comparison, but life comes at ya fast: I got caught up by sports, girls, music, and partying. By the time I graduated from high school, my GPA was below the standards of John Hopkins… I funked around badly in my high school years and fell apart from a broken heart (my first girlfriend).

I had to ‘settle’ for Penn State, which is still a good college, but I lost the chance to become somebody very special in science. Yes… I have regrets, but it is what it is, man.

Love is a very potent emotion, and I didn’t know how to deal with it at the time… I turned to drinking (under peer-pressure), to heal my broken heart.

Teachable moment: ALWAYS be there for your kids (my parents were going through an ugly divorce at the time), teach them that love bites (Def Leopard reference), but life goes on, and that turning to drugs or alcohol is NEVER the answer after heart-break… and tomorrow brings a brighter day with another lover who was greater than the last.

    I have spoken.

    • Marinofan13 says:

This is probably the first time in my 15 years of blogging I’ve really explained some of my past. I hope y’all appreciate it.

    • stangerx says:

So when Johns Hopkins was recruiting you in 7th grade it was about we want you to come here 5 years from now? Ken said Doogie Howser, I was thinking Young Sheldon.

      • Marinofan13 says:

Exactly, Stanger. By the way, your comments were most complimentary… thank you, sir.

Doogie? Young Sheldon? Love ’em both, but nah… I’d say more like young Spock.

      • stangerx says:

Still pretty cool, but you understand why our minds went that way. And Penn State is a cool place. Went to a wedding there once…. night before was at the Rathskeller.

      • Marinofan13 says:

Yessir, I understand why your minds went that way, indeed. I just wasn’t as mentally disciplined as Doogie and Young Sheldon. And certainly not as disciplined as Young Spock, either, but I’m uber-logical by nature… just like a Vulcan.

It’s VERY important for today’s children to have mental discipline… AND, the right to think freely. Difficult balancing act for such impressionable beings.

Always remember, I was YODA on the SS blogs… and most of y’all appreciated the knowledge I dropped. 😉

      • stangerx says:

Not sure how many caught it, but I knew you were Yoda before pretty much everyone. Far as I know first time you have admitted it…. and have dangled it out there more than a few times.

  34. It’s been 22 years since Dan Marino retired from football and in that time, the Miami Dolphins still haven’t found anyone to replace their former star quarterback. Since Marino’s retirement, the Dolphins have churned through a total of 22 quarterbacks

    Good write, Mike!

X did have 7 INTs in 2018 so it’s not like 10 picks last year was some sort of aberration. This is a general comment, not directed at you, Mike.

    • Marinofan13 says:

I want to be clear with ya, Tim… you and I are on the EXACT same page regarding X. I made a comment the other day that in Boyer’s Defense (and when in zone-coverage), X can become even better as a BALLHAWK!

That was NOT to dismiss X’s skills in man-to-man, prior to Boyer coming aboard. Dude has been incredible since day one, and you and I both acknowledge as much.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah he had a ho hum rookie season with injuries playing in just 7 games and no picks. Then had 4 in 2017, 7 in 2018, only 1 in 2019 playing in just 5 games due to injury and then played all 16 games last year with 10 picks.

I don’t think you need to make yourself clear, I think we all know X is a top corner because he is. 🙂

LOL, and I believe ya, man! Funny thing is that Chris T regretfully had to suspend me for using two different identities (M13 and Yoda). We conversed via email, and he apologized for having suspended me… that he REALLY loved my Yoda posts! But he had to do what was mandated by the SS, and I completely understood.

I think it’s GRAND that you knew it was me as Yoda!

    • stangerx says:

Maybe you just missed missed my posts on it. Thought was pretty direct in a way you would know without outright saying you are Yoda. Figured it out cause you and Yoda always posted at the same time. M13 showed up and then there’s Yoda.

Liked Chris T a lot. We went on many a Home hunt together.

      • Marinofan13 says:

I think Chris T was a very good dude. Yeah, that Home-slice guy had a way of popping up at anytime… kind of like the Joker in the old Batman series (Adam West).

Home and I were always cool with one another, and I never had anything against him personally. We have a mutual respect for one another… he sometimes pops up as a new Twitter user for me. I realize he gave most everybody here HELL, but that guy has been nothing but kind, respectful, and generous to me.

I think I know who he is, but I’m never sure. We’d made made peace on the Topix boards before coming to the SS blogs. If he is who I think he is, he’s actually a really good dude… albeit, he loves to mess with people (obviously!).

I’ve not had contact with him for many years, but I hope and pray he’s happy!

      • Tim Knight says:

Chris T was a good guy. As for Home, forget the shit he would say to me, I gave it right back to him. But he said a lot of horrible things to a lot of people that bothered me more than what he said to me. He was racist and would also make homophobic and anti-semitic comments. He was disgusting towards Gigi. That’s not messing with people, that’s being an asshole.

You saying he was always cool with you is like someone saying Hitler never did anything to me, so we’re cool. SMH

      • stangerx says:

Home would blitz out the board with spam, attack posters with the nastyest things he could think of and keep running attacks on posters here after he’d been kicked off. But glad he was cool to you.

It’s a long story as to exactly why, but think he is a nasty little guy who needs a wheel chair to get around. Saw him at a practice went to with Gigi and Walker. Has to do with him going up and down the stands looking for someones, his actions, that he said got to watch with AC (only handicapped or press) and his reports of being there after., including with two kids same as the wheelchair guy Combined with same guy having tried to create a Dolphins website with his pic on it. How his life is a reason to be sorry for him though.

      • Tim Knight says:

We discussed this at the MetLife takeover years ago.

      • stangerx says:

And nothing since has come out that makes me think different. Only possible in my mind is that Home is the Dad of that guy.

So you don’t know. Do you think he’s someone who still posts here?
    ————–
No, I don’t believe he’s someone who still posts here. I’m pretty sure he’s someone who is an interloper between many boards. Home is NOT ORob.

  49. ocalarob says:

    Jason Mcourty or bobby mccain?

  50. The Flying Pig says:

Friday night is for music posts. I keep logging on and seeing nothing but politics

Wtf is wrong with you guys

    Friday is for music

I see some have started so I will continue momentarily

    But I will squeal first

Politics is very divisive, but music posts are an opportunity to expose people from different backgrounds to something new

    Friday is for music posts

Honor the squiggly. Post music . I don’t care if it’s my music. Post it.

Unless you want to ask about the taint. That’s cool whenever….

  51. ocalarob says:

    coleman or needham?

  52. The Flying Pig says:

I will focus on one band (for now)

I saw a hipster with a Greta Van Fleet shirt on

Greta Van Fleet is a great band

Zeppelin fans will enjoy….and maybe criticize a little….bc early on they are kind of a rip off zeppelin band….

    But aren’t we all

Check it how much this sounds like zeppelin

  53. Marinofan13 says:

  54. The Flying Pig says:

This one is also zeppelin like

But you can see The growth

The singer, lead guitar, and Bass/keyboard are brothers

The singer and lead guitar are twins

    https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=greta+van+fleet

    You can see the talent

I’ve been wondering where Piggy has been hiding…

  56. son of a son of a shula says:

Here’s one that makes me think of being at the Fest. Doggy strumming, swaying with Stanger and Toba, maybe grabbing Piggy’s ass, Mike E and the rest.
Come on let’s all sing along together on this one

  57. The Flying Pig says:

    One of my favorites

I don’t think this is zeppelin rip offs

  58. CavalierKong says:

Son, I will see your Bob Seger- Shame on the Moon, and raise you one Ozzy- Bark at the Moon…

  59. The Flying Pig says:

  60. The Flying Pig says:

    Kong

    You will enjoy this post
I’m cooking a Galician style empanada now

Instead of a little pie. It’s a huge pie win puff pastry

    Yum

    • CavalierKong says:

Excellent! I love to make me some empanadas. What is/makes it Galician style? Ingredients or the way it’s prepared (or both)?

      • CavalierKong says:

I’m assuming it’s being a large pie instead of small standard empanadas, but I’m curious if it’s more than that?

      • The Flying Pig says:

The difference between Galician style and regular empanadas is that Galician style is one big pie

Kind of inspired by Irish/British meat pie

But I did mine with ground chicken instead of ground beef or shredded

And so i cooked potatoes first, then added onions, then a bunch of garlic (true Galician style), then red peppers, then Green peppers

        Then Chicken

Then Rosemary, salt, pepper And smoked paprika and oregano

Then set that aside. And in a Cast iron pan I lined it with puff pastry
        Then poured in the meat
Then topped with puff pastry again

And now I’m ready to die

  65. CavalierKong says:

That sounds fantastic, Piggy. And it inspired me. I’m gunna make me some empanadas next weekend, lol.

I just had a Boner for an English nurse

    Good job

  89. son of a son of a shula says:

Orob from earlier I think it’s Holland over McCain and my early inclination is to call it an upgrade despite him being a rookie at least he’s a taller rookie
And McKinney should be an upgrade but he’ll play more in the middle of the field than KVN did it would seem anyway

  90. son of a son of a shula says:

Jonathan Ledbetter shows on the active/current roster. He’s like a resurrection, he made the team as an undrafted rookie then all of his injuries piled up with a return to form he’s as viable as anyone to make it. Again. I hope he does make it, he’s crowded in amongst Beigle and Van Dyke among many others.

  91. pheloniusphish says:

    Here you go Son.

Saw the Doodies a couple years ago with Santana. Great concert band.
