Mike Gesicki – Will he be the Dolphins Franchise All Time Best?

Before this season begins, there are currently 8 TE’s that have more career receiving yards than Mike Gesicki. Of those TE’s, only 5 of them were drafted by the Dolphins. I’m sure you guys know who the leader is, he was the first TE to come to mind when I woke up and decided to write this article. Randy McMichael is the all time leading TE and he was drafted and played 5 seasons for the Dolphins. McMichael totaled 3096 receiving yards on 283 receptions and 18 TD’s. To me, those are very reachable numbers for Gesicki, but only if he gets a new contract. He’s on the last year of his 4 year rookie contract after being drafted #42 in RD 2 in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The other TE’s, if you’re wondering who are at the moment ahead of Mike Gesicki are Bruce Hardy (Drafted by Miami), Anthony Fasano, Keith jackson, Charles Clay (Drafted by Miami), Ferrell Edmunds (Drafted by Miami), Troy Drayton and Joe Rose (Drafted by Miami). Each season, Gesicki has increased his receiving yards and there’s no reason to expect that trend to stop this season. Throw out the rookie season where he was scarcely used, in his 2nd season he was targeted 89 times and had 51 receptions for 570 yards. In his 3rd season Gesicki’s targets went slightly down from 89 to 85 but he had 2 more receptions and 133 more receiving yards. I think a fair expectation for Gesicki this season would be 100 targets, 60 receptions and 800 yards. That would Mike as #3 All Time for the Dolphins. To me, the most important issue is re-signing Gesicki. Dolphins fans talk about how great our depth is at TE with Gesicki, newly drafted Hunter Long, Durham Smythe, Adam Shaheen, Chris Myarick etc., but no other TE is in the class of Gesicki here, not even close. He’s the guy we have waited for, the guy that has the size, speed, leaping ability and catch radius to beat any player trying to cover him.

If you think I’m blowing smoke, let me compare Gesicki to the best of the best. Travis Kelce was targeted 145 times last season, nearly 2 times more than Gesicki (89). Darren Waller was also targeted 145 times. If Gesicki was targeted that many times this season he would easily surpass all the other TE’s on the Dolphins All Time receiving list and would also make it impossible not to re-sign him. I’m not advocating for Gesicki to be targeted as much as those guys but I do think 100 targets wouldn’t be crazy. I would absolutely hate to see Gesicki move on from the Dolphins. I’m hoping we try and get him a new contract early on, because if he plays to his potential and we feed him enough targets, his next contract is going to be a huge one. Even if that’s the case, keep the best players on your team, especially when you draft them.

He’s worked on his blocking, and while he’s not the best in line blocking TE, the best never are. Travis Kelce doesn’t spend much time blocking and either does Darren Waller. The biggest exception to this would San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle who may be the best all around TE in the NFL. That guy is a tenacious blocker and also has the receiving talent to break a game open. Kittle regularly gets more than 100 targets in a season, and that’s where I feel Gesicki should be as well. I think Gesicki brings the same qualities to the table that Kelce, Waller, Kittle, Pitts, Goedert and Andrews bring. Kyle Pitts was drafted #4, Gesicki #42. Pitts is faster but Gesicki trumps Pitts with his superior vertical ability. I’m looking forward to seeing Gesicki join the ranks of the best this season with more targets and more production. Pay that man his money!

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Still can’t figure out why this about politics. Should be a choice made based on health information available to all. Whichever choice you’ve made know you think it was right cause people on this board are impressively smart. But why does the rest of the country just fall in based on party?
    ——————————–
“31% of self-identified Republicans say they will likely never get vaccinated against COVID-19, according to newly released polling. A bare majority of Republicans – 51% – have received at least one dose.

In contrast, 92% of self-identified Democrats have gotten at least one shot, and just 2% say they’ll never get the shot.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You tell me why Kamala said, oh hell no, when asked, if she was getting the vaccine, when Trump was president?

Biden also said he wasn’t going to get it

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That doesn’t address what I was saying. Whatever the medical info would have hoped that the GOP vaccination rates higher and the Dem ones lower. Not talking about which choice is right at all. Only that people are making medical decisions based on what party they are in.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

These 2 knuckleheads made it political

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        What they say matters

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So people don’t like Biden and Harris and cause they threw shade on the vaccine Trump developed as far as not taking it now Republicans don’t want to take it? Couldn’t imagine living my life like that…. but does show why people are making a political point about an important health decision.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The media is political with everything thing they can be, and they lie about 50% of what they say.

The CDC is as corrupt as it gets.

When you’re lied to constantly, you tend not to believe anything they’re selling.

For people to buy into something they must trust those doing the selling, and they don’t buy what they don’t understand

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So basically you are saying they don’t get the vax cause don’t trust the government and the media? Where do they get the info they do trust?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On top of that fauci helped fund gain of function, then keeps lying that he didn’t

He also keeps flip flopping back and forth with the masks

Just turn off the sound and watch his facial expressions, hard not to say it shows a lyer

  19. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Stanger,

I don’t know why it’s political. Honestly, if you are older and have medical issues, the vaccine should be a no brainer. If you are younger than 55 and in good health, it’s not really going to do much for you but it’s your choice If you got Covid at any point, then the vaccine is at best a waste and at worst, possibly harmful. Kids and teens should not take it since the SEs are possibly worse than the actual disease.

On to football, did anyone see Nick Foles promote himself in that interview?! It was amazing and I hope Reich gets him. Watching Wentz cry and whine as Foles takes over again would be golden. I’m damn glad we aren’t the Colts. Wentz is a fragile buttercup and Tua will end up having better numbers in 5 years. Not better in a year, better career-wise lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And that is a logical take based on the data available. Don’t agree with all of it , but can’t say isn’t a position to stand on. And nothing about politics.

BTW — main thing disagree with is about people under 55 getting the vax. My biggest fear since this started was spreading the thing to someone’s Mom of Grandma. And you can have it and not know it. Even if drowning in my own lungs wasn’t there as a remote possibility still would have got.

Didn’t catch the Foles interview…. had his on my FF team once though. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They say now that we still can spread it, after being vaxed, so the thing about having it and not knowing, then passing it to someone else shouldn’t be a fear of why you should get vaxed

That is if you believe anything they say

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That is both true and troubling steve. All the more reason to wear a mask. Covid is a biotch.

Seriously, people don’t trust the government and they shouldn’t. Not because there is some nefarious governmental plan to create a totalitarian state, but because the government is run by bureaucrats who are mostly concerned with justifying their own existence. America is not run by politicians. It is run by their staffs. I’ve yet to meet an elected representative with an attention span of more than 15 minutes. You want to get something done, you talk to their chief of staff. Who is unelected.

When did laws a common move we’d see from opponents would be to try and turn it over to “the bureaucracy.” Pretty much meant not this year cause the consideration, study committee, whatever meant not that year or probably not ever. So get what you mean.

Our goal was to keep it in the eyes of those elected representatives. On their radar and still in play…even if didn’t mean would get a win. The political system is not a fixed deal on any given issue for sure though.

    https://overthecap.com/what-exactly-are-injury-settlements/
    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/dj-fluker-12291/

According to this, the player and team will agree on a certain number of weeks, and the player will only be paid for that period of time- the money paid out will count towards the cap. We save on the rest of his salary. So we will gain at least some cap space depending on the details of the settlement.

That article was a good read. I didn’t know anything about the injury settlement process. It saves the team some money, and the player still has an opportunity to sign with another team or re-sign with the original team later that same year if he heals up.

    From Alain Poupart at SI

First, it sure looks like Michael Deiter is the front-runner to start at center as the 2019 third-round pick looks to return to the starting lineup.

Liam Eichenberg took first-team snaps at left guard in practice Saturday, and don’t be surprised if that’s where he ends up playing as a rookie, making the same kind of college-to-NFL switch that Laremy Tunsil made after arriving as a first-round pick in 2016.

It bears repeating that since they gave up a 2022 third-round pick in order to move up eight spots in the second round this year to take Eichenberg, the Dolphins will give him every opportunity to win a starting job right away.

The right tackle spot for now looks like it will belong to veteran Jesse Davis, though he’s been watching the end of practice from the sideline on a regular basis.

  60. BBM, its amazing you can say great governor and desantis in the same sentence, and even more shocking you claim that Maybe the governor is following science. then you finish with the parents can decide what their children do for safety

lets explore what desatan feels about science, he mocks it and profits from selling anti medical shirts and hats, so you are dead wrong on that one

he banned trans athletes in sports, yet FL has never had a trans athlete problem, science there? hardly
he has done MANY things to ignore, and downplay the covid, his actions have led FL to the very worst state out of 50 states in covid management
fl is dead last in covid deaths, number 50!
we can blame Desantis for this!

FL is not the largest state, but leads the nation in the delta variant, why? mismanagement

desantis is defunding public schools that attempt safety measures, is that scientific too?, will that help the FL numbers go down? SMH impossible

desantis is arguing that piney point water didnt cause red tide, even though scientists and marine experts predicted it

if You like the governor for OTHER reasons, just say so, but believing in science cant be one of them, he is not governing by science]

It really worked out for Hunt to be handled that way last year. I expect him to at most start for 3-4 games. If he wasnt healthy enough to play i mean its good we didn’t put him in there, but again, it hurts the team not to have a depth with starting experience so i think it sucks but its also not enough to worry over.

Rock – regarding Eichenberg, LG seems to be logical since as a LT he would have communicated with the LG. So he should know what the position does. They mentioned Tunsil starting at LG – I don’t remember that, but I may have killed that brain cell.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont see why you wouldn’t put Kindley there, he was first team all SEC at LG in college. Yeah he did great at RG but to me move him to LG and Eichenberg to RG if you want to start him at RG. They could also just leave Hunt at RT in that scenario which is my preference, as he played well there last year.

      • D's avatar D says:

Davis to me is a great guy and we’d be hella lucky to have him as our primary backup at any of the positions, but there are elite skills in Hunt and Eichenberg id rather have them on the field, though id be fine with Davis starting at RG or RT with Eichenberg being the guy to come in and take the position when they deem fit, hopefully some time this year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We could go round and round on this, they’ll let the best 5 play week 1

      • D's avatar D says:

Agreed, im just stating what i would prefer out OL to look like Jackson-Kindley-Skura (yes i think he is better than Deiter)-Davis -Hunt. Like you said though they will field it how they see fit and the best players will be out there so im not concerned over it being exactly that way, thats just how i see the best formation looking. I really liked Hunt at RT.

  71. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Our OL struggled week 1 last year, don’t think Flores wants a repeat, so expect Davis starting the season at RT

    • D's avatar D says:

If they dont decide to switch Hunt back to RT and continue with him at RG, then yes, they could alternately start him at RG and then let Eichenberg come in to replace him at some point in the season, as i just stated above in more detail.

I see your perspective, and i dont disagree with it, i like to see the young pups learn to bite as well, BUT depth is depth and if you can have a former starter as depth thats a win, or at least its a confidence booster that they can step in if needed without a big transition.

Davis is a great and consistent player, there is a lot to be said about that but he doesnt have the upper level skill set and he will and does struggle against the more talented players in the league. These younger guy like Hunt (for sure) and Eichenberg (most likely) have higher potential than Davis. I agree Davis starts the season but he shouldnt be starting before it ends. A lot depends on the development of Eichenberg.

Ideally I’d like to see Hunt at RG, even though he might be our best RT right now, because his ceiling is higher there.

It could really do wonders for our running game

    Your skin makes me cry

    You float like a feather
    On this beautiful field

Soccer has some of the stupidest rules of any sport.

USWNT playing in the semi’s against Canada, FB goes to clear a ball on the side of the box, Canadian player pusher her, jumps in front of her, and sticks her foot out, then gets kicked by US player. All of this happened from behind the US player.

    Good riddance to USWNT

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s skilled, but to he gets torched by good receivers, ones that run good routes to go along with good speed. Grant runs bad routs and he had bad hands. No pooping on his skills, like i said he’s a gem we found as an UDFA, but i still think he is a weak spot in our secondary that doesn’t have a ton of weakness right now.

I kind of wish they would let Iggy go back to his slot position, which he was excelling at last year. Maybe they will need Iggy more for boundary, maybe it was something they expected with Howard, but best players on the field concept says Iggy should probably be in the slot.

    — After making his training camp practice Monday, wide receiver DeVante Parker was among those missing Tuesday. He was joined on the list of missing players by Will Fuller V, Jaelan Phillips and cornerback Jamal Perry.

    — Running back Salvon Ahmed was at practice after being injured Monday but wearing a red (non-contact) jersey.

    — Wide receiver Albert Wilson practiced on a limited basis.

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel was seen walking off the field and into the team’s training facility late in Tuesday’s practice before it had concluded.

Van Ginkel appeared to get hurt during goal-line drills toward the end of the day’s work. His initial injury was not seen, but he walked off the field with a slight limp and a trainer alongside of him.

Van Ginkel has been working with the first team at one outside linebacker spot throughout training camp after a breakout 2020 season where he started 11 games and had 5 1/2 sacks.

Rookie Jaelan Phillips started camp as the starter opposite of Van Ginkel at outside linebacker, but he missed a third consecutive practice on Tuesday. Brennan Scarlett, signed as a free agent from the Houston Texans in March, got first-team reps on Tuesday in the spot vacated by Phillips, who did some conditioning on the sideline.

Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker missed Tuesday’s practice after being a limited participant on Monday, his first day off the physically unable to perform list. Parker started camp on the PUP list, and on Monday, he did early individual portions of practice but was not seen in team 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.

Running back Salvon Ahmed, who went down with an undisclosed injury on Monday, returned to practice Tuesday in a red, non-contact jersey. He did individual work but was kept away from team drills.

All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard, amid his contract dispute with the team, remained sidelined from practice on Tuesday after coach Brian Flores said Monday he had a setback with an ankle injury. Howard went onto the practice field to watch team portions of practice from the sideline.

Wide receiver Albert Wilson, one of the stars of the first week of training camp, had a modified day Tuesday, managing workload.
