PRESEASON GAME 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Wow, so pumped just to be typing the words preseason game 1. COVID-19 wrecked any opportunity to have any preseason at all last year, but this season, we not only get THREE preseason games but we also get an extra regular season game to make it 20 games in total! OK, so preseason isn’t all that, but to me, It’s game action against another team, and I personally believe it’s essential. Practice is practice, against your own guys, but when you face a different team, guys will bring more effort and the competition sparks a little extra than you get in practice. We have such a young team, I think they will benefit from having played these 3 meaningless games. You can laugh all you want at this but Tua not having training camp and preseason games did him no favors last year.

First and foremost we need to come out of the preseason healthy. There are injuries in practice, there are injuries in preseason games and there are injuries in regular season games, but you never want to lose a player before the real season begins. There will be some interesting competitions to watch, not only for starting spots but for roster spots too. There are always surprise cuts and sometimes there are surprises as to who makes the starting roster and this year will be no different. At least this year with training camp, minicamp and the preseason, players will have had a chance to show what they can do and the evaluation process should also be easier for the coaching staff.

I think the most interesting battle in my opinion is the O-line. This is where there is the least rotation and the starting 5 usually get the greater majority of snaps. As of now, the line is as so . . .

LT Jackson

LG Eichenberg

C Deiter

RG Hunt

RT Davis

I’m not buying this, and I believe by the time the season starts it will either be Eichenberg or Hunt at RT. If it’s Hunt then maybe Eichenberg stays at LG, but if Eichenberg gets the RT spot, I think Kindley settles back in at LG. We know the 3 starting DL in the 3-4 alignment are going to be Wilkins, Davis and Ogbah. I think we also know the 4 starting LB’s in that same 3-4 are AVG, McKinney, Baker and Phillips. I know Phillips has had a slow start and it’s possible he may not start the season the season there but I also know they will give him every opportunity to make it happen. With Howard getting his extension we know it will be Howard and Jones, but then the safety battle will be an interesting one. I think Eric Rowe is safe at SS, but does the wily veteran McCourty start the season at FS, or does 2nd year man Brandon Jones get the nod or does the rookie who looked great against the Bears in practice, Jevon Holland steal that spot?

On offense, I feel like health will determine who starts at the skill positions, WR, TE and RB. If healthy, Parker, Fuller and Wilson, all veterans will “start”. There will be tons of opportunities for the others though and that’s where it comes down to the roster crunch. We know Waddle makes 4, so does that leave 2 more spots or 3? Hollins is the gunner on special teams and that’s an important factor as to why he might make the team as he’s a good one. Grant is an electric returner, a playmaker but his suspect hands (on returns and as a WR) may leave him off the roster. What about Lynn Bowden Jr.? We gave up a 4th RD pick last season to acquire Bowden and he showed some promise, especially late in the season. It would be hard to let him go so if we keep 7 WR’s, all of the above should be in. That means veteran Allen Hurns, Robert Foster, Kirk Merritt, Isaiah Ford, Malcolm Perry all gone but a couple may end up on the PS.

Oh, by the way, Gesicki is back! Can’t wait to see him back in action and watch him get his well deserved new contract! So Hunter Long is NOT gone for the season, that’s also great news! That should leave Gesicki, Shaheen, and either Smythe, Carter or Myarick to go along with Long as the 4th TE. At RB, Gaskin is the lead back followed by Malcolm Brown, Ahmed, Scarlet, Laird and Doaks. Hey, what happened to world beater Doaks you were all telling me about? Sorry, had to get that out! I’m guessing we’ll carry 5, maybe 6 so Doaks has a chance to make the roster. We no longer officially have a FB, so we might carry 6 RB’s.

The game is on NFLN tomorrow afternoon at 1PM. I will record it as I will be working unfortunately, but I’ll get around to watching it at some point, I may stay away from this blog so it won’t spoil the viewing. Enjoy the game, it will be nice to see some of our exciting rookie prospects suit up for the first time, and see the growth of our 2nd year QB. Looking forward to it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Yes, that’s correct, just looked at the tweet in Twitter, but I like my U75 version…

Seems Bears fan reporters are all gaga over what Fields did yesterday, to the point they said he was the best player on the field

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Did read some reports that said he was at least hot in one streak in either 7-7 (think) or 11-11. Think included 4 TDs in 6 tosses. Games tmrw though. Would say won’t play much, but as a rook maybe he puts in a half.

    • D's avatar D says:

All teams with new QB’s and the previous year was a carousel of QB’s are going to be all about the new guy they are hoping will be the franchise guy. He could be throwing over the WR heads time after time and the fans are gonna put that on the WR so they can continue to gush about their new QB.

  17. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I love we have one more regular season game, but flip side is one less preseason game.

Before the third one was the show the starters for at least a half in a tune up for the opener. 4th was do one or two series with the starters and then let the guys trying to make the team make their case and the guys who won’t build tape for other teams.

Does that mean 2nd game will be the tune-up and the 3rd like the 4th used to be?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t like having one more game

      There’s very few positives

If you are getting ready for the postseason there’s a chance of injury

If you are on the 1 seed, it’s one more game to sit starters

If you are bad and have been out of the playoffs since October it’s one more be disappointed over

The only situation where it means anything is if you are a team fighting to get into the playoffs
But adding a 7th team in the playoffs kind of resolves that got a lot of teams

I don’t know what the benefits are

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

        Benefits are “t.v. money” 😉

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

More revenue for the NFL. One more game for fans to watch. Period.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you are on the 1 seed, it’s one more game to sit starters

No, you just sit them week 18 instead of week 17

Positives are it keeps some teams in the playoff hunt longer

Teams starting of 0-3 or 0-4 or just a bad start still have a chance at playoffs

More money to the players salary cap

1 more real game for us to watch…

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — know anecdote is not a good way to make policy, but Dolphins sure as heck would have liked to have had one more game last season.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know Steve, for every team that only sits starters for the last game of the season, there might be one that sits it for two instead

The nfl, or any sport, crates a greater disparity between good and bad teams with a longer schedule. It might be minuscule, but you can see that with more games, it’s easier to be up by two games

Not sure if that makes sense. But it doesn’t fall neatly into being the 16th game a team plays by adding a 17th game.

Everyone else’s comments about 💰 though make a lot
        Of sense

        I guess I overlooked 💰

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s my guess, but after last year some don’t think PS games are needed.

Would’ve been nice to have PS games last year, when we had all of those rookies, this years PS games may be needed more

  22. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jimmy Johnson recently claimed he could have traded up to get Peyton Manning in the 1988 draft even if would have cost him “his entire draft board.” Guess a lot of GMs or HCs could say that, but Johnson least seemed to imply he was thinking about it.

Unless Jimmy is blowing up Jimmy….. that’s twice we had a chance at The Great Gumby.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think we had much of a chance the last time. Probably was a lot closer to happening when Johnson was considering it. I really don’t think that second time was likely at all we offered nothing in the form of a decent team to join for noodle neck, and he really needed a better team around him to get things done by that point. He definitely needed a better OL than we had.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Last time we were one of the two teams. Billboards up in Miami about it and I bought the “Peyton to Miami” T-shirt. But could have just been good work by his agent in making us the stalking horse.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Dallas was picking 8 in that draft

As I remember 1988, the colts knew what they had in Manning and were set on drafting him since about December 1987

Peyton Manning didn’t sneak up on anyone. He was expected to be great as a prospect. He’s on of the guys I remember hearing about that the experts got right

  23. D's avatar D says:

I think all the evidence points towards Kindley getting demoted because he came into camp out of shape. He played the entire year last year at a very high level and no way he would lose his spot after that kind of year otherwise. Maybe they had some voluntary stuff that he decided to skip as far as conditioning and that had them sour on him before the program even got started. What i think that means for him is if he busts ass and gets back to good form, he is going to make his way back there. Maybe this is motivation to be a rpo and put in the time to keep himself at peak performance. Eichenberg gets his chance to stud out and keep a position on the field.

I’m leaning towards Skura starting as well, and its likely similar situation to Kindley. Im skeptical that Deiter “won” the spot that early when they went out and got Skura seemingly to at least start this year so something change between FA and the start of the offseason programs that changed that.

I think Hunt is the best RT we have right now, barring Eichenberg just hitting the ground running, which since i haven’t seen any practice footage to analyze i can say for sure. Davis is a good, solid, player. Its not upsetting to see him at RT to start out, but i also think he wont be there long, if even before game 1. He just doesnt have dynamic ability and if they have the best 5 on the field, i cant see him being in that list by the time Eichenberg gets up to speed, and Kindley gets his shit worked out.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Kindley will either pop back into LG or he won’t. Right with you on think he showed up out of shape, but then don’t know what shape he is in now. And whether he does or not completely influences what would happen at RT and maybe RG at least.

Why are you leaning to Skura? Haven’t even read much about what he’s done in camp.

      • D's avatar D says:

Just stated it below but its basically off starting OC experience. Deiter really has little to none starting experience anywhere. Skura has a couple of seasons as a starter at OC.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Dieter at least claims he played C like 2 seasons in college, but that claim might be more about the position he wants now.

  24. D's avatar D says:

    Good write btw Mikey/

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

D, I kinda see your point, but I disagree overall. They have been practicing the guys at these positions for weeks without much mix / match. I think Dieter will start over Skura come game one. We never heard anyone at the team say they wanted Eichenburg at RT, that was all talking heads. We HAVE heard from the team that they think Hunt has the ability to be a pro-bowl guard so I think they will move him inside if they can find the best fit at RT.

I’m not insistent that I am right, just my thoughts on it.

    • D's avatar D says:

No i get ya and maybe your right. I haven’t seen any of them play, i just know what i saw from last year and i think Hunt could be a pro-bowler RT as well. If he san be at OG im just as good with that assignment, point is to get that level of play wherever and i just find RT harder to find it at so i hate the idea of them moving him. Im 51/49 on Skura nd it goes off starting OC experience. I dont have a dog in that fight i could see it going either way but im leaning towards the experience at the spot is all. We are probably only slightly off on our observations.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

well, I am an admitted ball watcher so don’t let Randy beat me up for commenting on the bid uglies ok? LOL

  26. D's avatar D says:

IMO our best OL looks a lot like last year, and im only iffy at a couple of spots. Obviously Jackson is relatively un-challenged at LT, at least right now i cant see anyone but Hunt at RT, i have seen Hunt at the pro level and Eichenberg at the collegiate level and Hunt just looks better to me, specifically the way he moves his feet which is a luxury at OG and a crucial skill at OT.

At the OG spots, i would like to see it be Kindley and Eichenberg but which spot they man doesnt matter to me. Kindley did well at RG, but was a all SEC at LG, Eichenberg has a better build for OG than OT but im not sure if he might be left or right side dominant, so if he is transitioning better on the left side, Kindley can stay at RG and he man LG. Davis probably will start out on the starting lineup and then provide us and extremely good backup at all positions.

That just leaves OC and there isnt enough knowledge of either at that position to know which ones should be starter. Skura has started at OC more, and that makes me lean towards him being the guy, but Deiter might finally have matured enough to be the guy. I don’t know, its the biggest ? i think of how i think it will all shake out in the end.

Other positions are more clear. RB is the next closes thing to a ? and its not really so much about who will play because they probably all will, its just more about who gets the lion share, who will we cal our primary RB or will we even have one. We are heavy at WR so its a matter of who stays, who goes, do we try to trade a guy before we have to cut a guy who is a starter on another team?

The whole defense is loaded with quality players at all position bigger question will be who doesn’t make the cut. This year we are going to be cutting some talent.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jackson is LT. Either Skura or Deiter is C.

Leaves Kindley, Eichenberg, Hunt and Davis for 3 positions. That’s my math on it.

But will add if Kindley isn’t up to snuff for whatever reason he hasn’t been with the starters….. the line we’ve been practicing is the line there will with.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The move to RG for Hunt makes sense, as long as the person replacing him at RT is close to him in pass blocking, and that shouldn’t be too hard.

Hunt excelled last year as a run blocking RT, but his pass blocking numbers weren’t all that.

You move him to OG, which should allow him to play to his strengths

That’s the only question I ask before acting- WWHS- what would Herd say? The one I removed is what she asked that we don’t do and honestly the above pic is past what we should be doing but since Mike E put it up it’s not for me to say.

i got a great idea mr pig, i never mentioned your name once, and you insult me out of the blue.
in the future just scroll by my posts, thanks

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      That won’t work

You are talking about the decisions made in running the blog. That involves me. And I’m not going to leave any of the other administrators on an island on the decisions they make.

      Here’s a better idea – don’t troll

You know the answer to the question you asked about the pic.

Did you even see the pic David posted?

  67. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

if i were going to look at porn, it would definitely be in private, or in the company of a GF, i wouldn’t share it with a group of guys.

there’s something wrong with that picture

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      It’s not porn

      It’s a good looking woman

I don’t care if you dont like it. That picture made my day better. I just scrolled up to look at it again

Let’s not get crazy here with the picture. Ot wasn’t even close to porn. Woman wearing a tight sweater, calm yourself. You can see worse on prime time tv

Good to see you Cap, hope all is well.

  76. Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Are you guys talking about the supportive pic? If so that’s hardly offensive if you ask me

    • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Lmao your old school pic. If I ever meet you and you don’t look like that….. I’m going to feel horn-swaggeld, spelling doesn’t look right…. maybe spelling police will get me

  77. Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Did David get banned for that pic? I would hope not

  78. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Woohoo Captain Stubbs to the Fest 😀

  79. Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Back to football talk. Do you think the lineups we see starting tomorrow will be the units that’ll be lining up week 1. This 3 preseason games instead of 4 has me confused how they’re going to play it

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Probably close but not for long.

      • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

I was thinking the same. I’m feeling like we really won’t see the complete units at all after this game. So many questions to answer with the roster. They did pretty good without doing it last year ie preseason

  80. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

David got bashed for putting an indecent pic on the site, he was reprimanded and his post were edited.
no less than 2 days later Mike puts that pic on here of a very young girl with her nipples busting out.

    yet that’s alright.

I’m surprised some of you don’t understand what’s wrong with this.

is this a porn site, if so don’t fuck with Davids post,

if it’s not then don’t post shit like that.

you should rename this place to fins double standard

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Oh brother. I don’t know what to tell you. If it bothers you that much you don’t have to be here. And no I am not trying to chase you away but you are making a mountain out of a mogul

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Y’all have a choice. Always have. If you find our rules unfair or the site offensive, you have the choice not to visit it. Whatever floats your boat so to speak

  82. Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

I apologize for bringing it up…. this is, I would say a fairly tight knit group of fin fans. Someone unfortunately has to moderate.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t worry about it, lots of political talk has been going on here and its been creating divides just like with our entire society. Some of us have been asking to cut it down by a lot with football season here but it’s still a struggle. You didn’t start anything.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cap, I think there is a number of players who we all know are going to make the team. The rookies and even 2nd year guys need some reps in these games though. But lots of guys fighting for roster spots need even more.

    • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

For some reason I feel like are preseason is going to look horrible… however I think it has no barometer on our season. I actually feel like we’re getting this team together and we’ll be very successful this year

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Pre season rarely means anything. It’s just a way for coaches to evaluate talent. And what the coaches are looking for is often very different than what the fans want to see

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have no idea what it’s going to look like but effort better be there or lots of players won’t be here.

    • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Ken, I totally agree just that we’re seasoned to see the future for the first half of 3rd preseason game… I’m just feeling that we won’t see that all

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Now with only 3 preseason games I think game 2 will be the most important

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I doubt we see the main guys play all that much in all 3 PS games. Get some reps and game feel, but then turn it over to players trying to make the team and earn roles.

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think the starters we see will be the starters day one. I still think Kindley will start at LG and Eich will be the RT

    • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

By the way great write up. It sounds like the whole line is a shuffle. I understand having cross players is great. Just wondering if you lean that way you never get stud players. Just slightly above average like myself lol

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I have been with this group for pretty much as long as any. I’ve chatted with many of you for about 25 years now….it’s kinda hard to believe, actually. We are a fucked up group of individuals who constantly irritate, entertain and sometimes even educate each other. I have always valued the exchange of ideas…..even when I thought the particular idea may be completely batshit crazy. Lol
    ***
We have never been big on censorship….and I value that highly. Sure, we have tried to be “adult” in a choice or two. I really doubt Herd gives that big a shit about that pic today, anyway. She can certainly speak for herself as she’s always done, but I don’t mind cleaning it up a little for her. Just as we would if we were all sitting around at a bar having a drink. I never even saw the pic David posted, but I really don’t care. I hate that one thing Tim always puts up of the guys in leotards, but I just scroll past! People can choose not to read or look at stuff. That’s called making a choice and not claiming be a victim because you were offended. This constant drama is getting ridiculous. Even Jahn and I weren’t this bad arguing about the OL! Lol

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Well said Randy!

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Maybe that sorta thing went on in your neighborhood but not in mine! Lol
    ***
Besides, you could post the one from…I think it was Cinemax….with the girls in the leotards doing aerobics….but Noooooooooo! Lol

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Cap,
Good to see ya! I would love to be local. Do you need a deckhand? My prostate is big enough now that I think I can get on disability, so I’ll work for free.

  89. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mountain out of a mogul? Is that like making a molehill out of a nobody, only bigger?

  90. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
If hot chicks in tight leotards thrusting their legs up over their heads isn’t appropriate anymore; I’m not sure that’s a world I wanna be a part of.

  91. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The dancing, exuberantly grinning, leotard ‘guys’ are extremely disturbing. Maniacally ebullient aerobics cult vibe…

      • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

Disappointed I am so surprised those aren’t 3 pigs in a blanket…. who said an old pig can’t learn new tricks. See O rob it’s all good…. I’m poking the bear.

      • Capt. Stubbs's avatar Capt. Stubbs says:

This is not offensive to me although it’s offensive.. I will say I hope the fins are as together as they are

  93. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

This BS is being blown way out of proportion

For the CJB to try to be dismissive and judge the two pics saying one was worse than the other therefore it’s kinda alright
. leaves ambiguity, how do i know what’s Inappropriate or not?
is it a gray area or is it black & white?
like golf, some moron says we play it down in the rough, unless your up against a root, mud on your ball or you are in weeds.
if we play by those rules some would be taking relief where others are not.
we either lift clean & place in the rough or play it down.
one or the other, black or white, no ambiguity.
i get it, you’ve been caught with your pants down and are trying to squirm out from under this situation. going to extremes trying to justify it instead of simply admitting it was wrong and correcting it

  95. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

cant wait to see how Tua plays today, i want to see him set up in the pocket for a while and get it to a rec downfield, these quick plays where he gets rid of the ball as soon as he gets it don’t count!
