Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Great take on how the roster will settle out, but don’t think it is Preston versus Hollins. Think btwn Williams and Merritt. Williams might not play but think they keep him even if just to put on IR after so can have available later on in the season. All comes down to his health.

Also have more Eich love than you, even if only cause more questions about Kindley.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I get what you’re saying, I think Hollins can give you what Williams does but he’s a gunner on ST’s too so he’s safe. Merritt is more like Wilson, Grant and Waddle and if Merritt makes it, still an outside chance Wilson doesn’t.

I think Eich will start the season as RT2

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think they will get him in on some 6 man lines when they play big and he will beck up Davis at RT to start the year IMO.

Have I mentioned yet that I love that our bye comes in week 14? When have we ever had a late season bye that benefits us? Oh, when they cancelled our bye and made us play 16 in a row!

Maybe you are right, but not so sure Cam starts. Media is all about Mac Jones all over it and Newton blowing it bac with Covid protocols. But may just be the thing to write about of the week. Cam sure did crush us good in the first Pats game last year.

  12. D's avatar D says:

A lot of time i do not agree with the ideas they have about this or that one will get this or that big because when i look at the conditions I’m like i just don’t see it. You get use to the conditions that cause them to swell up or peter out. I’m not saying that it isn’t always true, and always follows the same patterns, but its really hot and humid and that means its hot on the Gulf and conditions are right for it to strengthen.

I think this one is going to definitely grow pretty significantly, the plus for me is that it looks like its going to have to cross the toe of the boot of Louisiana and that will weaken it bac down some. I’m also not directly on the coast so it will weaken even more before getting to me, but i do think its gong to be in the 3-4 range by landfall, probably still a 1-2 by the time it gets here. It would be better overall if it does this, because if it turns even more east, dodges the toe, ill be on the weaker side of it but it is going to clobber BBM and that areas of the coast between Mobile and P’cola.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s the other problem with the gulf, it has to hit land somewhere

Fun ending to the Eagles vs the Jest. One of the very few times in my life I actually rooted for the Jest at the end.

Eagles were up 1 with about 1:05 left. Jest have the ball with no timeouts.
Jest fumble, Eagles defender picks it up, no one around- and runs it into the endzone for a TD.

I’m yelling. “You should have gone down idiot!”
Amazingly, the announcers also understood this and talked about it.

Jest get the ball back down 8.
Hail Mary with no time left, Jest score a TD.
Jest convert the 2 point conversion. Game over- Tie.

The Eagles player returning the turnover literally cost his team the win with his lack of football intelligence.

It was awesome to see the consequence of a bad football play, that usually doesn’t end up in a bad result, immediately impact this game.

Plays really blow for such a tall dude. He has good closing burst and can reallextend his body to make that tackle. A bit of an arm tackler but looks like he has sting hands because he doesn’t seem to lose them once he gets hands on them. Looks like a nice all round pass rusher and edge setter.

I though at first that this was the dude that LSU had coming to them that dropped his commit late and went to Oregon instead but after looking at his bio I think was a different player and he just has that Cajun surname that maybe threw me.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

This is all true… I like Watsons skill set , but I am liking what we have seen from Tua in PS… no need to take on a 30M /yr salary at this point .. MAYBE straight up for Brissett and a WR , but that would just be cutting Tua off at the knees

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Never said was in favor of the trade just that cost will be cheaper than what was in the tweet. And your point on the salary bothers me more than the picks.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

        Or talking

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t get me wrong. Watson wants to get traded, Watson’s agent wants to make that happen and the Texans want it to happen at some point. So it will not die until happens. Q is why the Dolphins involved. My guess is they were interested before, Watson would waive his no-trade clause for them, and they at least still pick up the phone.

  51. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If we were to trade for Watson I would think we’d have to give up a major asset to make cap room, maybe Howard or Jones

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I wouldn’t even give up Howard Jones

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think it’s happening, but just talking because it’s the topic, his cap hit is appx 16 mil. We have about 6 mil in space, if I remember correctly, that was the last number Steve gave us.

We would need to pick up 10 mil. We may gain some after final cuts. And part of the agreement with Watson could include reworking his deal to get him under this season without losing anyone.

Also, I would have to assume Tua doesn’t stay, his cap hit is nearly 7 mil, so that is most of it right there.

  52. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If the Texans want to trade Watson, first of all he has to agree, secondly the team he is going to has to have draft capitol and a need, that eliminates a lot of teams.

Also the fact that we have Flores, Miami plugs all those categories very well,
    I can understand the speculation.

  53. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ken, this says 6 mil. I don’t know if it takes today’s trade with the Ravens into account. I haven’t looked at that guy’s salary.

Also, regarding today’s trade, does that mean Skura may be out? We can’t keep only interior guys as depth, we need some outside guys too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not for sure, but he is less locked in than before. They have another guy who can play center. And seems pretty much everyone we have can play guard.

  55. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The tricky part of trading for Watson is that you aren’t sure he can play this year, or least all of it. Sorta means you keep Tua. Man would that make for some headlines. Not just talking local….. national.

  56. D's avatar D says:

I don’t believe the story nothing Flores has said has ever I dictated that we are interested and aren’t confident in Tua. These pussy fart beat reporters just circle jerk over stories like this. 59. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“The Texans are willing to trade him but their starting point virtually ignores the idea Watson is in legal jeopardy or could be suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, one league source told Outkick.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, remain open to acquiring Watson for the right price.

The Dolphins are willing to risk acquiring a quarterback who may not be available to them even this year because Watson is obviously very good and won’t turn 26 for another two weeks.”

I want nothing to do with Watson.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d take him for the right price, but the case against him is an issue and should prevent him from playing this year

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bottom line is Flores/Grier willing to listen to trade talks, but aren’t giving up the farm, and at a bargain they could make a deal

Tua starts this year no matter what

No way in hell any reporter knows what our FO is thinking, if they were actually serious about an offer close to 3 1s and 2 2s

Flores will listen to any team about a trade, doesn’t mean he’s motivated

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Salary cap seems to be holding steady at 6m, Hurns and Bowden no longer show up

Greg Mancz’ contract with the Ravens was only 990k (87k net), adding him to top 51 and removing Long puts us at 5,927,000 under

  63. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  64. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Can we put a guy on IR even if they have a minor injury? I guess the answer is yes, since Bowden’s injury wasn’t even a tear.

Does the player have any power to stop that? I’m just wondering how IR works in this regard, is there an agreement with team and player, can the player fight it so they don’t lose a season, can the team do whatever it wants ,etc?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m just wondering why fringe, high potential players don’t get stashed on IR by teams more often. But I’m starting to think it through, one thing to limit that is you still pay them more salary that counts towards the cap than cutting them (usually), so you wouldn’t want to spend too much current cap that way.

It’s a great question and one don’t have an answer for. Have to assume they can’t just say “Hey you just bumped into that table means an IR/redshirt year for you.”

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess that is really my question, can they essentially do that? Or does the player have to basically ‘agree’ to it? Does there have to actually be a real, verifiable injury?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Before they changed the rules and you went on IR and were done for the year. Am sure many a player was ready to play the last 4 or 5 games but couldn’t. Would have been taking up a roster slot before then though.

These rules are all covered by the CBA though. Doubt the Union would let IR get abused without some kind of arbitration or something.

A flathead screw would sit flush to the surface it’s screwed into, I think you are asking about straight or slotted screws. They are the “original” screw, Phillips came in and practically made them obsolete along with square tips and star tips.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, that was my ignorance of the correct term. When I wrote the original post, I added the comparison to cross tip to show what I meant because I had a pretty good idea that flathead screw was wrong. I’m talking about a slotted head screw.

I also call aluminum foil ‘tin foil’. My wife always pokes fun at me about that one, lol.

If you don’t like flathead screws maybe you should try using a real screw driver, that fits, not the one size fits all one, that you bought at the dollar store🙄

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

According to what I just read, one of the big reasons the Phillips head was invented was because of the common problem of lateral slippage on slotted head screws. It’s not just a made up thing by people with the wrong size screwdriver, lol.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Lol, slotted or flat head screws are useless and have no use in a civilized society.

Steve countered that saying it was 6, and he usually has a good handle on the cap numbers.
    ———————
It all depends on who ya go by. Some (including pro writers) go by Spotrac (me, for instance) while some (including pro writers) go by overthecap.com (Steve, for instance). Ya also want to be sure that either site is updated to account for the most recent transaction(s).

The fact of the matter is that the NFL keeps the true numbers, and rarely are Spotrac or overthecap.com exactly correct on projections (meaning, newer salary transactions that the NFL has not officially released).

Every so often, the NFL releases the ACTUAL figures, and both Spotrac and overthecap.com make corrections to reflect the new/real figures.

In short, both sites are very good, but neither is 100% correct until the NFL has its latest salary releases… and at this time of year, it’s obviously a pain for EVERYBODY to keep up. Expect everything to be updated after the final cuts down to 53-man rosters, just prior to the beginning of the regular season.

Hope that sheds light on the differing figures from Spotrac and overthecap.com.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t worry about. The team handles it anyway. We act like the team doesn’t know what they’re doing with the cap.

Us Phin fans are just used to our FO screwing everything up for nearly two decades. I truly feel we’re in capable hands today, thus I totally agree with ya.

Since Grier took over and brought in Flores we’ve had no cap issues.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think the difference is spotrac counts the 4 players on IR, even though they don’t officially count that until the 53 man roster is complete

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Cool, man. I just looked at overthecap and see they do have our space at 2.5 mil, so you may have been closer to the right number. I didn’t realize the two sites had that big a disparity in the numbers.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Doesn’t matter who’s closer, man: official will become official, and both sites are probably off a bit.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The idea is to use the cap to field a team for the season, not just keep hoarding it forever so it looks good. How does that help you win?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The whole conversation about cap only came into play in regards to having space for Watson, and how much we have as of right now. And yes, most of us believe (know) we aren’t trading for Watson, but that was the topic.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay I can see that. Trading for Watson doesn’t make much sense to me.

        2. Trade compensation
        3. Taking on his contract
        4. We don’t need him, we have a young QB we drafted and are developing with the rest of the young team

  76. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t get the hype for Watson. IMO, he was only average to slightly better than average his first 3 years then had a great year in 2020 only cause they were mostly playing from behind and passing a lot. He holds the ball to long, IMO. Sacked 174 times in 54 games with 30 fumbles but only 10 lost.
Also, he isn’t the most accurate QB either. Watch some Will Fuller highlights and see how many under thrown balls Fuller has to wait on or come back for.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Not only all of that (which I agree with you, 100%), but Roger Goodell is going to nail his ass to the wall. PLUS, BO$$ RO$$ absolutely wants nothing to do with a locker room distraction or media circus ever again.

  78. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Oh god never mind. 😂

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

There are a mere three things I’m a wee bit concerned with regarding our team…

    1) Our O-Line. And yes, depth is VERY important. We’ve added (via trade) yet another just today.
Hopefully, all will be well… but it’s telling that we’re still adding to our O-Line even today.

    2) Our stable of RBs. Now if our O-Line does its job, our stable of RBs should be able to do their job… so consider “1) and 2)” as a two-for-one kind of deal.

    3) Our (lack of) pass-rushers. Great selection in Phillips (he’ll screw the opposition up in time), but it’s asking a LOT of him to become Cam Wake overnight. I really hope Ogbah continues his positive trend… and he still hasn’t been re-signed.

All-in-all, I think we’re looking extremely good heading into the regular season… and I’m still predicting a 13-5 regular season record… with the caveat of none of our essential players go out for the season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We saw a very vanilla pass rush in the PS other some typical blitzes. You want to see guys mano a mano. This team believes in scheming a pass rush with all the versatile players they continue to bring in. Don’t sleep on Van Ginkle. Ogbah has had an offseason that looks primed for the big payday. I think our core interior DL on the field all game makes a big difference. PS is still practice, just in a game setting.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Bro, I don’t really care about what we see in the PS. I suppose what I’m saying is that we still (at least not yet) don’t have a 10-sack/year guy on our roster. Love AVG, Ogbah, and Phillips… we just need to see the growth once the bullets become live (regular season).

I’d LOVE to see it happen! We’ll see!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I concur, lol. Was thinking if Gaskin or Ahmed go down we suddenly become thin at RB in regard to depth and play making ability. We have no other “weapons” waiting in the wings at RB.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If other teams lose two of their top RBs what do they do? They have an endless group of quality backs? You can’t build a roster thinking about injuries, especially two deep?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yup, right with you. I’m not lobbying for us to sign Le’Veon Bell, but I’m sure he could be had on the cheap at this point. I suppose the question becomes: has Bell finally been humbled after his recent stints with the stej and Chefs*? And equally importantly, is he still able to be an effective RB right now, or has he really let himself go?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not worried about the RBs, but agree they’re somewhat tied to the OL

Pass rush will be fine, a lot of it will come from AVG, Wilkins, Davis and Butler. What Phillips will do is prevent QB from getting outside on his side, Ogbah will hold down his side, so the middle will feast

OL isn’t going to be what we’d hoped for 2 months ago, but Tua will navigate it just fine
