Game 7 – Falcons @ Dolphins

This has been a rough season, I/we didn’t see this coming. It’s not over yet and the season is still salvageable if we get back on track. We most likely won’t be in the playoff hunt but we can play better and make it more tolerable for all of us. This week is the Fest game and I look forward to meeting some new folks and and seeing some old friends. Hopefully, more of you who haven’t made the Florida trip will be able to make it in the future.

We need to play better football. We have talent here, we need to find the best way to use it. Hoping we start doing that this week and make this team worth watching again.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

On play calling process: it was always a collaborative effort, it was early in the year, it is now. Our focus is on Atlanta and today’s practice.

Flores on Watson rumors: I don’t get into rumors, Tua is our quarterback, I’m happy with our quarterback situation.

Byron, X, Preston, DeVante and Shaheen all have a chance to play Sunday. Today’s practice will tell the team a lot about their availability, Flores says.

Coach on Tua and how they manage his psyche amidst rumors: His preparation, the way he practices, the way he performs… it’s been good. I thought he played VERY well last week. I think his psyche is in a good place. He’s a confident kid, a tough kid.

On where Tua’s career is headed: He’s developing, he’s smart, tough, talented, he’s accurate. He definitely has an opportunity to be a very good player, but there’s a lot that goes into that. A lot of work from him, from us, it doesn’t just happen overnight. Always bumps in road.

On how Tua has been supported since arriving in MIA: It’s No different then we’d support any other player we bring in. We try to get to know them, find the best ways to teach, find strengths and weaknesses, build on both of those.

This is a pretty good reason to fire Flores

    ————–
The question becomes, why can’t we execute Offensive plays as we did last season? Tua, IMO, is NOT the problem.

What has changed from last season?

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am glad we do the get together at D&B every year. I enjoy it much more than the game (Except of course for our first win ever against Houston. That was EPIC! We were still high fiving the last score and would score again!

  14. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

One can make the point that any play called comes down to execution, but if the play goes into a defenses strengths or is the wrong call against a certain defense, it can be blamed on play calling IMO

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Am sure the guy just had to write a trade-deadline story, but would you trade Howard for what would probably be a mid-first?
    ——————————————————
“ESPN’s Bill Barnwell wrote a column on Thursday listing some possible trade scenarios around the league, and he came up with one transaction that could make some sense for the Dolphins going forward.

In this suggested trade for Miami, the Dolphins would be dealing cornerback Xavien Howard and a 2022 second-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2022 first-round pick and a 2023 second-round pick.”

  19. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Did Titans not just trade for a dB ??

  20. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Guess Howard is the hot trade commodity for sports writers. Makes sense since he’s a big name and his age. And this guy gave us more for him.

“Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report wrote up some proposed trade ideas…..In his proposed trade, the Bengals would send Miami their first and fifth-round picks in 2022 for Howard”

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Why would we be trading Howard? This isn’t baseball where teams unload everyone once the season is in the toilet.

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Good lord, I can’t wait until November 3rd, smh.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

Would you call that on 4th down last week against the Jaguars?

That’s bad play calling. It’s very easy to see the many examples of just bad playcalling. I literally just pointed to out last offensive play.

Can you imagine playing a game a Chess and going to a committee for your next move?

Play calling as a shared obligation of the coaches, completely undermines the ability of a play caller to have a strategy. He can’t call a play to set up a play later.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I really haven’t understood the issue people have with the multiple hands in the play calling, but I think you make a very good point that I wasn’t seeing with the idea of adjusting on the fly and in game strategy.

You can have a strategic plan beforehand that is constructed by those multiple hands, but making tactical decisions during the game needs to be done very quickly and doesn’t necessarily allow time for deliberation.

Maybe we don’t have an offensive flow because we don’t have just one guy who is feeling the ebb and flow of the game making those in game decisions.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If you think of it as a game of chess it makes sense

When you call the play on first down, you are thinking about how you will call the 2nd down play

When you call a play in the first qtr, you may be thinking about a play you will call in the 2nd qtr

It’s just the way strategy works, a coach needs to be 2 or 3 steps ahead and if you are sharing responsibilities you undercut that

There are some things on the football we see every week that reinforce this idea

      – a play action call for example. The play action relies on an effective running game. If you have run early often and been effective. The play action you call later should freeze the defense. Especially if it’s run with the same personal out of the same formation later.

      – ‘4 down territory” as a phrase. 4 down territory means you can use the first 3 downs to see up a 4th down conversion. So every play call matters to set up the converting down. Really to a lesser degree this matters in 3rd down territory too. When you use every down, they play off each other. So having different people do it requires the same collective goal – and that’s hard to orchestrate

      – a misdirection or counter play relies on a defense going one way and then going the other way. Like the playaction, it’s better if you run the play before to get in the defenses head. They don’t realize it’s going the other way before it’s too late

      – putting a receiver in motion is not just about that play, it’s about seeing how a DB reacts to it and which DB reacts to it. It will help you create a mismatch later in the game on another play.

It’s possible for a group of coaches to observe and react. For 1 guy to call an early play and for another guy to react with his playcall – but it might be too many chefs in the kitchen

If you are making a recipe, and some one else prepped the ingredients – you better know how much salt was used in that prep right?

Getting a group of coaches on the same page, in game, so that they can get inside a defenses head, takes an exceptional amount of communication and really, that just adds to their responsibilities.

If it’s all going through one guy, he doesn’t have to worry about informing the other coaches what he was thinking when he called the earlier play. He knows what he was thinking (I hope)

In game, when you have to make adjustments or just from Strategic standpoint, having to convene with other coaches -that’s a disadvantage before you take the field.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And I didn’t even raise the most important thing

What if they disagree with each other?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt about too many cooks might not be a good way to do it. But then on many if not most teams the HC has a hand in play calling at least to some extent.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That is still really some one with authority overriding an OC and that’s much different than play calling by committee

  24. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Who’s going to provide play by play post at the game?

  25. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

That was a nice long post pig. I didnt get far though.
I believe why flores as dual ocs is more for not being able to point the finger at a single oc. It deflects the blame. Im dire each of them have specific jobs they need to get done

Back to reading war and peace

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

This team is young and inexperienced on all levels. They need time to grow

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Rpo is a different animal. The problem with Rpo is your ol is not firing off thee line.
Is it a run or is it a pass?
In a pro set your ol is firing off the line. Then you have success running and then play action works

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah but how many times are we running rpo?

I can see that argument though. You can see how our OL has not been good in rpo – like when we get the illegal downfield penalties

Does it make them less aggressive? I can see that. I haven’t been looking for it but it’s logical

I’ve got to be quite honest with you, Bro: you continue to impress me with your knowledge of the game. No offense, but I didn’t see it from you the last several years. This year? You’re KILLING it!

I couldn’t have said it better than your 6:32 PM post above. I give you PROPS!!!

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Sometimes IMO – The offense looks unorganized
It just looks like a salad of plays

    I’ve mentioned it before
We do those first down draw plays and get 0-1 yards
Then we run a little 4 yard play to waddle or Gesicki
Then it’s 3rd and 5 and we have to hope to covert every set of downs with a play similar to what we ran on 2nd down

Why didn’t you run that 2nd down play on 1st down
And set yourself up to have 2 plays to convert – with one of those plays you can take a shot downfield or try to establish the run

Keep your eyes open this Sunday for this routine

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think our offensive scheme.is not a winning scheme.
We are soft and play soft.
You have to dominate your opponent. Punch’m in the mouth.
    Everything else is snake oil

So now it’s the play calling that makes us suck? I thought it was the OL? Or the coach? Or Grier? Or Tua? Or Ross? We’re running out of shit to blame! I wonder what it’ll be next week. Lol

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You give Tua and the run game some consistent blocking, we will score enough points to compete. It’s not there yet. You can’t run an offense blocking just every other play.

As for the defense, they haven’t played up to par this year of what we thought they would be. But the offense has been the weak link of all three phases. Our complimentary football is broken.

Football is not that complicated. If you don’t block your plays… you’re punting. If you don’t score points you’re losing. You have to be good on offense to make the playoffs. Defense might win you some big games, but if you can’t score you’re done.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The early stages of what can be good stuff ahead if you give it time. I’m being serious. Tua gets rid of the ball really quick. Yeah he has to learn from his mistakes too. But this video shows the potential. It’s just getting started on offense. When they start playing better I think the defense will too.

  42. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I believe the reason why Miami has multiple OC’s is to funnel the media blame game to Flores, and it works!
which OC is to blame for this struggling offense,
“we need to find that out so we can hang the guy”!
    instead
    ” i can’t believe Flores has two OC’s, he doesn’t know what he’s doing”
DONE! Blame game funneled to Flores.

You can bet that each offensive coach has their area of responsibility just like any other team, when that coach fails it’s not broadcast thru out the media, it is handled in house.
to be a coach in the NFL you have to have a physcology degree.

forget about multiple OCs, that’s just a term to confuse outsiders

  43. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i can’t wait for the trade deadline to come & go regardless of the moves made, huge distraction.
i believe the texans are putting out mis information to gain interest in getting watson off their books.

as much as i would like watson to be miami’s qb; if i were calling the shots his value would be very diminished. you have to pay him this big contract, not even sure if he can play or ever take a snap for miami. as soon as miami threatens to play him he goes on the exempt list. the NFL will not let him play, it’s a black eye for them.
if everything goes good for him you’re still looking at mid 2023 before he takes the field!

no way i would give up three 1sts

  44. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i also think if tua plays this sunday there is no 3 team trade sending tua to washington and watson to miami.
if that deal had wings no way tua plays this sunday.

Laugh if ya want, but Cordarrelle Patterson is having a one helluva year this season, being the Falcons happen to be the first team to ever use him as an OW (Offensive Weapon). He’s listed as a RB (he can run and catch fairly well, as we all know), and he’s been flexing all over the place (slot and boundary WR) pre-snap.

Many cite him as the MVP of this young (and dismal) season for the Falcons. Keep a body on him, Phins.

I ran into a guy at Starbucks this morning that claimed to “know people” and insisted that the Watson deal is done, Watson has already left Texas for Florida and he has settled all the accusations and signed the paperwork with the dolphins last Wednesday. According to said loud mouth Tua has already been traded to Washington and Watson has already arrived in Miami.

It was all supposed to happen 4 weeks ago, butt a last minute holdout by one of the women held things up. Supposedly the deal is done now…

I will say good bye to you all now if any of it was true.

  64. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Piggy, per the know it all, he knows someone in Alabama, who is close to the situation……(don’t get that connection)….the person also told said know it wall that Tua has a learning disability that the Dolphins knew about but drafted him anyway…buy I digress…the league has a deal in place that if he could make the problem go away then the league would not step in or levy any discipline, That’s why we could see Ross and Goodell in the box together at a previous game….
    .

  66. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So the Dolphins knew about the learning disability and agreed to keep it secret so they could get compensation from Washington in the 3 way deal that has already been agreed to (AND EXECUTED) according to KIA
