Game 14 – Jets @ Dolphins

Divisional rival game. Throw out the team records, throw out the last meeting between these two teams and also, throw away all the momentum of the 5 game winning streak. All that is in the past. What remains in front of the Miami Dolphins is a team that knows them backwards and forwards, there are no surprises, no secrets. Unfortunately for the Miami Dolphins, the one thing that the win streak afforded them was consistency. That went out the window when the entire Dolphins RB room tested positive for COVID. More unfortunately, it wasn’t just the RB room. We have potentially lost our star WR Jaylen Waddle as well as our star S Jevon Holland. Both of these players are huge part of what we do on offense and defense respectively. The pass game went through Waddle and the versatility and effectiveness of Jevon Holland doing everything from blitzing, to coverage, to playing near the LOS as a LB has been so valuable to the Dolphins. There is potentially good news as S Brandon Jones is questionable to return from ankle and elbow injuries Sunday. He’s logged 2 limited practices so it’s possible he can suit up. Jones isn’t Holland, but if I had to pick one of our safeties to replace Holland, it would be Jones.

Back to the consistency thing. We need Deiter in there at C and we need him to play well. We’ve had 3 different centers this season though I believe we’ve seen the last of C Austin Reiter who was waived this week. Greg Mancz who we picked up from the Ravens is IR/DFR which means he’s off the IR and designated for return. He’ll likely be the backup this week to Deiter who is wearing a precautionary walking boot. I’m really hoping Myles Gaskin can play. We know his limitations, as do the Jets, but he gives the offense some consistency which is much needed this week. If Waddle is OUT, and it sure looks that’ll be the case, DeVante Parker who is being rested this week and not practicing will hopefully be wearing his Superman costume under his uniform. The WR corps will be Parker, Wilson, Hollins, Ford and Williams. I would imagine TE Mike Gesicki would be in line for a heavy dose of targets this week although it’s difficult to say that with certainty since his targets have been anything but consistent.

Our defense will have to set the tone, and they have been doing that during the duration of this five game win streak. There won’t be the statue-like Joe Flacco at QB this week, it will be the much more mobile, much less experienced rookie QB Zach Wilson. To be fair, Flacco carved up our defense pretty well but ultimately it was his lack of escapability that did him in. Zach Wilson can move, but pressure will cause errors in judgement and poor throws. We need Emmanuel Ogbah, Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel to keep up their relentless pass rush. All of these guys have been killing it the last few games. If S Jevon Holland is OUT, hopefully Brandon Jones can step in and get the job done.

The Jets will likely get a boost for their run game as rookie RB Michael Carter will be coming off IR this week. Carter has played well this season and has been a definite bright spot in their offense. Bad news for the Jets is WR Elijah Moore is on IR and will not be able to play Sunday. He’s been the bright spot in their passing game which now features Denzel Mims who is desperately trying, along with the Jets to get going. The Jets will rely a lot on Jamison Crowder, Keelan Cole and Braxton Berrios. Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson have been splitting RB duties but if Michael Carter is able to play, he’s the one to watch out for.

I don’t care what this game looks like on paper. Yes, the Jets are 32nd in points allowed with 397 (30.5 PPG). They are 29th in points scored with 226 (17.4 PPG). The Dolphins have made significant gains in both categories during the 5 game win streak. The Dolphins are now 25th in points scored with 254 (19.5 PPG) and really moved up defensively to 13th with 288 (22.2 PPG). When 2 teams know each other so well, anything can happen, especially after having the win streak snapped by the interruption of the BYE week. What could have been a week to improve our roster by getting healthy has turned out be a disaster with COVID infecting too many important players. It will take a lot for Brian Flores and his staff to stay focused and find a way to overcome the obstacles that have presented themselves this week. Hopefully Flores has this team’s attention and they understand the importance of winning E-V-E-R-Y * S-I-N-G-L-E * G-A-M-E. There are no week’s off, this team must win the rest of their games or the season is done. Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh would love nothing more to end this streak and have the Dolphins join them as another team from the AFC East OUT of the playoffs. This game could be a nail biter, so fasten your seatbelts!!

PS – Some good news most recently from the Stanger camp. Jon has improved since my last update. Things are looking up so all of you BLOG Cardiac Surgeons can rest easy and don’t worry yourselves about transplants and the like. Hopes and prayers to Jon that he continues to improve and get out of the hospital able to resume a normal life.

Not that Stanger would do that1

Awesome that we have Gaskin back. With the new protocols it’s remotely possible we might even get Holland back before the cutoff. Unlikely for Waddle though.

SB – Huge Billy fan. I think “NY State of Mind is great”. “Captain Jack”. “I’ve Loved These Days”. “Until The Night” is one of my favorites. I played out out some of my faves from “The Stranger” album. Still, “Only The Good Die Young” is one of my favorite Karaoke songs. It’s funny, in concert Goodnight Saigon is wonderful but I would never go to listen to the studio version. I kind of lost interest in Billy when he got into Doo-Wop. I like some songs but I pretty much fell off his bandwagon. Stopped buying his stuff at that point.

There are only two things that I caught this week that need editing.

    1. First paragraph “it6 wasn’t just the RB room” I don’t think you meant for the 6 to be in there.
    2. Last sentence of 2nd paragraph “have been anything but inconsistent.” I believe you meant anything but CONSISTENT?

    Great write-up otherwise!

    New Age/ Rock,

I don’t know if you have caught the Amazon WOT vignettes called ‘Origin Stories’; if not you should give them a watch. They are 3-4 minute animated shorts that give background to the show like the story of Jearom Gaidin- the greatest swordsman who lost to a farmer, the story of Manetheren, background on the Age of Legends, etc.

They are actually really good, and IMO it’s the way this entire story should be told. My wife and I were watching them going WTF?! this is it, this is what the show should be.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I haven’t seen them. Where do you find them?

I think the entire show should have gone to a great anime production company and followed the story in the books more. I am trying to suppress my continual outrage at the dog shit changes they keep making, but I can’t get through an episode without getting angry.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

They gay warders in episode 6 made me want to smash shit!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yes! It should be an animated series. They could tell it exactly the way it needs to be told and do it justice.

The animated shorts are found listed with the series episodes along with the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that make me want to punch Rafe in his face every time I see him, lol..

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Thanks Kong. I will check them out. As much as I hate Rafe and the abortion bucket he’s made of a great story, I can’t stop watching it. I have been waiting soooooo long for it to be produced.

The maker of “Arcane” or “Blade Runner – Black Lotus” would have been perfect animation studios to produce the show. They could have done it in 18-20 half hour episodes per book and not had to cut so much / change so much and the production costs would have been less than they are.

The youtube critiques / spoofs really are better than the show. LOL

Good write, Mike! The defense is what sets the tone for this team. We usually start off good on offense and score early sometimes the first drive. Then we kind of sputter and the defense starts creating havoc. We should win this game even if we’re down a few key players. The defense hasn’t allowed more than 17 points in the last 5 games during the win streak. I don’t see that changing so if we can score 18 we’ll win. 🙂

This kid passed for nearly 6,000 yards this season and 58 touchdowns (Joe Burrow kind of numbers!). Best of all, he can throw a pass SO HARD it will enter Rob from Ocala’s ASS and come out of HIS NOSE!!!

I THINK WE’D ALL PAY TO SEE THAT!!!

  58. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ken, the short answer is, we win no matter who loses. Both outcomes open up legitimate paths for us, and only a tie screws us.

The crux of the matter is do you think Indy has a better chance to lose next week in Arizona or that NE will lose at home to the Bills? That informs us who to root for.

Now here’s the long version which of course assumes we win out.

    Pets (9-4) @ Colts (7-6)

Colts: At 10-7, Indy has the tiebreaker over us on conference record, so we need Indy to lose two more games. If they lose today, then we only need one more loss (@Cards, vs Raiders, @Jags). There is a good chance they lose @ Cards, and even a chance they lose to the Raiders, so Indy losing today is a good outcome.

Pets: At 10-7 we have the tiebreaker over the Pets with a season sweep. If the Pets lose today, we only need them to lose one more time (vs Bills, vs Jags) since we play them in the season finale. There is no chance they lose to the Jags in NE, so it’s just one shot with it all riding on the Bills beating them.

Here’s the interesting bit. If the Pets win, they basically sew up the division, but with a Pets loss there is still a small path for us to win the division. If the Pets lose today, we need them to lose to the Bills next week and need the Bills to lose two games out of their other three games (vs Panthers, vs Falcons, vs Jets).

I think it’s a very small chance the Bills will beat the Pets in NE and then lose two out of three at home to those other teams, but it’s not impossible.

Forgetting the division, I think there is a good chance Indy loses next week in ARI (even though Hopkins just went on IR), and I also think there is a good chance the Bills get some payback and beat the Pets next week in NE.

I keep waffling on which of those is more likely, but since it’s easier to root against the Pets, I will probably be rooting for Indy today.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Indy also has the head to head vs us (which we all know). I was considering multi-team tiebreakers as I was writing, which I think has a decent chance of happening.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats won’t be close to sewing up the division with a win today, unless you believe it’s a given they’ll beat us week 18

Buff wins out we win week 18, Buff wins division

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If the Pets win today, they are playing to win the division next week. And they’ll have two shots (Bills in NE and against us) to win it. To me that is close to sewing it up, but if you don’t see it that way, fair enough, we’re just talking semantics.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      Always take making the playoffs

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Should be a no brainer then for you to want the cheats to beat Colts and Bills

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That is kind of what I am thinking

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s a matter of what you want vs what you think is more likely.

If it’s about what we want, then the no brainer is rooting for NE to lose to the Colts and Bills next week, and the Bills to lose two of their other 3 games. That way we win the division.

That likely won’t happen, so we’re not talking about what we want, but what we think is more likely.

At that point, the question for tonight’s game is the same one I asked earlier, do you think it more likely the Colts lose next week in Arizona or that NE will lose at home to the Bills?

If your answer to that question is the Colts likely lose next week, then you root for NE this week. If you think NE is more likely to lose, then you root for the Colts.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I mean, either way, you’re just rooting for the team that loses tonight to also lose next week. If that happens, we are making the playoffs.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For me, that’s no contest. Obviously I don’t want the Pets to win another SB, but I’m far more concerned with what we do, so I’ll take the playoffs.

    Panthers at Bills: Panthers
    Titans at Steelers: Titans
    Packers at Ravens: Packers
    Raiders at Browns: Raiders
    Bengals at Broncos: Broncos

The first three are obvious. The last two will help us regardless of outcome and are debatable. I’ll explain my reasoning.

Bengals at Broncos: We need two losses from the Bengals because they have the tiebreaker on us (conference games). After the Broncos, they have (Ravens, Chiefs, @Browns). That’s a tough schedule, but if they win this week, we need two losses in those last 3 games, and the Bengals have shown they are capable of beating good teams.

We only need one loss from the Broncos, and they finish with (@Raiders, @Chargers, Chiefs). I’m confident they’ll lose one of those last two so I’m going with the Broncos in this one.

Raiders at Browns: We need one loss from each of these teams and the Browns loss has to be an AFC loss. The Browns have (@GB, @Steelers, Bengals). The GB game doesn’t help us which would only leave two games to get that loss, and it’s possible we may need the Browns to beat Cincy in week 18. The Raiders still play (vs Broncos, @Colts, vs Chargers). I’m confident they’ll lose one of those last three so I’m going with the Raiders in this game.

The Raiders have the potential to be our best friends in this whole thing. Literally every week till the end of the season, the could potentially knock a team from our path. Ideally, they win out except for a loss next week vs the Broncos.

Great to read that, guys! I really enjoyed the first season and am looking forward to the 2nd. I’ll probably watch half of it tonight after the game, lol.

New Age, I know the time jumping bothered a lot of people as needlessly complicated, but I loved it. The moment I realized we had been jumping, I literally yelled out loud “Holy shyte, they’re in different timelines!” lol.

I get it was confusing to some viewers, but I love complicated timelines and plots as long as the continuity works and it’s thought out and put together right. For me, so many shows are obvious and trite that I really appreciate when a show makes me think or surprises me.

My favorite show of all time is the German show ‘Dark’. The whole damn thing is a puzzle, each season has its own mini-puzzles and problems you have to solve (like season one trying to figure out who is who and which younger version is which character and keeping them all straight in your head). As the show progresses, it requires very active participation from the viewer to understand it and get what they are doing.

My daughter and I literally talked for hours in between seasons about WTF was going on and how everything pieced together. But I literally have not met another person who could even sit through the first season (except online). Most people find it boring and/ or hard to follow.

Cav, your playoff scenario information is really good. Thank you for putting it together along with your commentary.

You are right up there with Mike E regarding providing good content to this blog.

We are lucky having the contributors we have on here

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow…thanks for the nice words, Bookman. That brought a big ol’ smile to my face. 🙂

And thanks to Ken as well for asking for the scenarios which has prompted me to keep going with the posts. I genuinely enjoy working this stuff out and trying to write it somewhat coherently, lol.

Yeah nice job on the playoff scenarios, Kong. Big game tonight.

    So difficult

  80. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Hate Patriots but must root for…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think the Pats will fall out of the playoffs and they probably win the division. They’re playing better than the Bills. The Colts are the easiest jump for us.

  81. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    …Feel so dirty

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

And thank you Kong for making sense of all the playoff scenarios

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Colts look good so far.

  84. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t care if we get kicked from the play-offs or not!
I will not root for the Patssies!!!!!!!!

  85. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Of course I am rooting for the Pats and they still manage to fuck me. Hard.

    Speed kills!

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If this makes any sense, I’m not rooting for the Pats but know it’s best if they win. I’m just watching the game.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IMO, IF we can make the post-season, ANYTHING can happen. That stated, I’ll be happy to take the path of least resistance. Yes… that means I’m holding my nose and hoping that the Patsies* win.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said basically the same thing earlier. But I’m not emotional about it. It’s not like this is the game that decides our playoff fate. That would be different. It’s one of many over the next few weeks. We have to win out so there’s a lot that has to happen before we’re even really there.

Dunno why but I have ALWAYS confused Wentz and Goff … I don’t fear the colts

  89. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I hear Wentz I picture Goff

Even if it doesn’t help us

It’s fun to watch some one beat the patriots

  92. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats lose tonight, then beat Bills again is bad for us, but if they lose both it should give the Bills the division and we’ll knock the cheats from the playoffs with a win week 18

  93. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fuck you Matt Jones. You are no Tua

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reason I’m ho-hum about our playoff chances is last year we were 8-4 with 4 games remaining and we still didn’t make it at 10-6. Now we’re 6-7 with 4 games remaining. Of course I’d love to see us pull it off and it would be a blast to watch it happen. But I don’t expect it. So it would be like asking for that amazing Christmas gift you didn’t expect to get but you did get it. 🙂

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

@ 1-7 I think we all were ho-hum about the playoffs.

It’s nice to know we can be competitive with both of these teams though!!!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Last year was last year, it has no relevance

Last year the division winners separated themselves more, creating less teams at the top

Odds are we go 10-7 we’ll get in, but I’m with you in that I don’t expect us to get in

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know every season is different, it’s more about odds for me. The relevance for me is our odds were better last year and we still didn’t make it. This year we need to win out and everything has to go right. Last year we went 2-2 last 4 games and nothing went right last week of the season. That leads me to not expecting it which you agreed with.

We’re in a “it’s fun while it’s still possible but not likely” mode.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

“Ho, ho, ho”, Tim! Knowing us Phins, we’ll get that Red Rider shotgun for Christmas and shoot one of our eyes out! 😀 😆
