I didn’t like the wasted time out near the goal line late, and there were a lot of those, such as not getting a FG kicked before halftime, plus 3 late game collapses, but all teams lose games on late field goals from time to time, plus losing to Jax, plus not doing well with hiring coordinators, and then a very unimaginative offense as well, but I still think this is a very bad decision.

my brother in law, a Ravens fan, made the comment that Flores only won 1 more game than Gase in same amount of time. I’m not looking it up cuz I can’t bring myself to type that name more than once in a day…. but could that be somehow a part of Ross ‘thinking’? The consensus amongst so many long time NFL people is that Flores is going to have a great career.
Maybe it was how Flores handled the Offensive Coordinator spot the last few years…

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I just think Flores is one of the good people, and you just shouldn’t treat that quality of a person like a commodity.

He’s popular with players yet tough enough to keep them together during the losing streak and just needed one more year to pull it all together.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Saying that is ignorant, if you mean it

Gase took a team with some talent and got to the playoffs year 1, Flores with direction from Ross tore it down, those 5 wins were unbelievable

Flores had 2 winning seasons after rebuild, Gase was a mess by end of year 3

I think because the Raiders are rumored to be interested in Harbaugh, and after the Raiders won last night and are still playing, Ross made the move now in hopes of swooping in to get Harbaugh now. JMO.

  9. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Flores certainly made some mistakes but he did more right than wrong. He kept the team together and the team never quit on him. He earned the right to keep coaching. The team is coming off back to back winning seasons unlike Gase who took over a fairly talented team and destroyed it by the time he left the team was heading the wrong way

I got a ton of work to do today. Not gonna give Ross any more of my energy today. Bottom line is, regardless of roster status, 3 years is the expiration time on this job.

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In the end he couldn’t beat Buffalo and the team was soft overall

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Dolphins point at his overall record as the reason behind the decision.

That’s the kind of logic I’d expect from people here

Ok Ross you dumbass, you okd the rebuild, that means you take the first year and throw it out, 2nd year we overachieved, but wasted FA money, that hurt this year, this year we underachieved 19-14 coming off of a rebuild doesn’t scream he should be fired based on record

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think if you invest the draft capital in the OL that we did, you have to see results better than we did.

Jeff Darlington posts that the Dolphins are NOT targeting Harbaugh, so that’s good.

I want some hot offensive minded coach who can draw up a game plan to put up 30 ppg. Our d can take care of itself, if we just get one high quality MLB.

  18. New Age's avatar New Age says:

While I had problems with Flores, I’m not seeing how this is an improvement for the team. Do we have someone in mind because I bet we don’t. I think Grier was the obvious fire…so we kept him. I just don’t see how this makes us a better team.

On the flip side, Flores seems very abrasive. I always wondered why he couldn’t find or keep coachs or why talented FAs left. If he’s a reason we can’t keep FAs, then I at least understand this move. I don’t understand how his relationship to Tua was a factor since we chased Watson? Pretty confused overall.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ross is in his 80s he wants to win now. As well. I’m sure there are things happening behind the scene that we don’t know about. • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Depends on who the next HC is. These guys mainly care about getting paid and getting stats. If he thinks the next HC and DC give him opportunity, he’ll get on board.

And Ross is publicly saying they aren’t pursuing Watson now

  52. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Here’s a guy to keep in mind

    Doug Pederson

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Lol. I dropped his name earlier as an offensive consultant before the news of Flores’ firing.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I like Pederson. He did well for Philly. and one of his disciples is HC for the Chargers. The Andy Reid tree has some talented offensive coaches.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’d be OK I guess, what was the reason for his success and failure in Phi?

Thought they were loaded, when he got there, then he had cap issues

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think his success and failures were partially due to injuries and the QB carousel they had. Wentz was always injured or butthurt and Foles was inconsistent. He got in trouble for sitting Hurtz and was gone days later so he may have personality issues with his QBs as well. Definitely something to look into.

  53. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

So Joe Judge keeps his job, but Flores doesn’t?

  54. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Flores will go to Chicago, they’re talking about wanting him there

Only thing I can think of why you keep Grier is, Flores was calling the shots on players and Ross sees something in him

What I can’t figure out is, if Flores was picking the players why keep Grier, if he doesn’t have the balls to be the boss

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think Grier picked players that Flores agreed to or pushed for…and then Flores wanted them gone when they didn’t meet his standards. Belichick thinks players are interchangeable and I bet Flores does too.

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Was shocked to hear we fired Flores. By now you guys have all discussed it and the reports on why he was fired. My view is now we have to find a new HC and staff and start over again with systems so once again no continuity. Life being a Dolphins fan.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Flores changed shit up so many times it was like starting over each year

Belicheat did that somewhat, but he had a base he kept

Maybe Ross wants to try again without a rebuild

Just FN keep Boyer and give the D some continuity

  56. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

I also really like the idea of Pederson. He has old ties to the team, and this is a pretty damn good job. Lots of young talent, lots of FA money available, and extra picks in 2023. If you look at the amount of work the other teams that need a HC require, this is much easier. He’s also a Reid disciple and I think Reid is one of the best coaches ever. His OCs find ways to push offense and Tua needs a coach like Pederson if he’s ever going to succeed.

My only issue is that they say Pederson can be prickly as well. Isn’t that what got him canned in Philly? I guess that’s what interviews are for.

  57. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ross is an asshole. He got it wrong again. I am officially relinquishing my fan card. This team is hopeless because of it’s inept owner. They will never go anywhere with Ross at the helm. Grier is the problem NOT Flores. But Grier gets a pass since 2000. Grier has been with the organization since 2000, in an executive role since 2007 and the GM since 2016

Ross is a Dumbass! Back to being OUT!

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hope Flores doesn’t get a new HC job, if he does you’ll see lots of guys like Ogbah, Needham and others going with Flo

  59. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Harbaugh will be the next coach of the Raiders no way he comes here

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Here’s how much I believe what Ross and any other NFL people say

Hours after firing head coach Brian Flores on Monday after three seasons with the franchise, Ross shot down rumors of his interest in filling the vacancy with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who said he would entertain NFL offers this offseason.

Harbaugh will be our next HC, bet on it

Also think Fins are FOS, when they say they don’t have someone in mind

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ryan Gados FoxNews. How do you keep your job?

Flores spent three seasons as the Dolphins coach and only had one winning season. However, he failed to get the team to the playoffs. The team hasn’t been to the postseason since the 2016 season, when Adam Gase was the head coach.

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Today is ODD Old Dolphan Day

The day the rest of us realized what OD has been saying for years about Ross

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we hired Harbaugh or Pederson, it would be an upgrade as far as I am concerned

But the problem is the transition period

  64. Ken's avatar Ken says:

We had a coach that beat the Pats 4 out of 6 times we played and we fired him

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      ODD

    • boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

yea but he got blown out by the bills twice every year 🙂 Do you really think Flores was the coach to win a Superbowl here? I’m not happy about the firing but it’s not the end of the world. I just thought we should have cleaned house. I think if we were gonna change coaches we should be changing GMs too.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We had a coach in Gase and Philbin that beat the Patriots too

Some asshole announce described it as an anomaly

Besides, what difference does it make of you sweep the Patriots but get swept by the bills

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ogbah, Roberts, Gesicki, Jenkins, Hollins, Riley, Johnson, Smythe, Needham, Eguavoen are the FAs I want to re-sign

Preston, Ford, Biegel and Mancz would be ok too

Shouldn’t take too much to sign those

Expect Needham and Roberts to follow the Flo

  66. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t understand why people are upset about Flores being fired

My only argument for keeping him was consistency from year to year going into next year

Other than that, there were so many coaching errors that hurt us from week to week and season to season and so many questionable

You can look at a player like Noah Iggy and say that’s a poor draft pick
But in fact, he was drafted where most experts projected him to go
Having him on the inactive list for 2 years should be the eyebrow raiser
Not that he was a pick we made

Also the obsession with DBs was a product of the coaching, not the Front Office
That’s the way our blitz heavy defense was built
We needed DBs who were able to play man coverage

So drafting a CB in 2020 made sense if that’s what your coaches wanted
And drafting Iggy with that pick hit every model of where that player was supposed to go

And then he was basically inactive for 2 years

Likewise I have the same argument with Austin Jackson
You know he’s a raw prospect when you draft him
You know you are just outside of the top 4 OTs that year and you are probably taking a project at OT
You rush him into to start with 3 different OL coaches

It’s never clear where bad personell decisions end and bad coaching decisions behind – but it’s hard for me to separate any of the “bad draft picks” from bad coaching

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I think people are upset becuase it’s the closest we’ve been to showing growth and would have liked to see some continuity, or at least fire Grier as well, if you’re going to make a move like this. We’re back to starting at 0 with a new vision from Lord knows who. The records might have been similar, but both Gase and Philbin both lost their teams and there was clear decline after initial small success. We at least had one side of the ball figured out for the most part, whereas the previous guys didn’t do anything particularly well.

I really think Flores is being scapegoated for poor upper management and ownership. The Packers cant continue winning with new coaches because management knows what it takes to win and they hire guys that reflect that. Same with other perrenniel contenders in BAL, PIT, etc…

It’s tough to consistently get wins in this league. Like who out there right now is worthy of being in the discussion of coaching this team? I don’t see any names who are obvious wants.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Flores is still wet behind the ears, his guys love him, and he had great 2nd half all 3 years, he just needs to figure out FA and getting players ready for season

If you hire a first time HC you better be willing to give him at least 5 years, if he bites as a PUP, if not just hire a vet coach

How the fuck does Ross say ok to rebuild in year 1, then 2 winning seasons later says tear it down again

      That’s an asshole owner

  67. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I was posting just last night that I didn’t want any major changes

But – I can’t argue that goring Flores was a bad decision

I just don’t see the merits to that argument

Telling me Grier should be fired too is not an argument about whether Flores was a good coach or not

And telling me that you wanted to avoid changing coaches again – I get it bc I don’t want that either, but what do you think they were about to do this off-season about the Offense and the OL

  68. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Well if there is one positive that comes out of this:

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Ken

The idea that Flores should have stated on another year to coach Tua at QB might be in conflict with itself

Flores gave no indication in game or outside the game that he was comfortable with Tua as his QB

He coaches Tua like he had no faith in him

  69. Ken's avatar Ken says:

It would not surprise me if Flores becomes the next HC in Houston and DeShaun Wants a Massage decides to all of a sudden decides to suit up for the Texans again

One thing about Flores that seemed off, why couldn’t he decide on one OC? That just was strange to me. If neither of them is good enough, then it shouldn’t have been both of them. But what do I know?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s so against the grain to have multiple OCs to start your season

I like out of the box thinking
But having multiple OCs was out of the planet thinking and not in a good way

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think a lot of us feel that way. It’s going to be interesting to see who we bring in and what coordinators come with hin

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It was previously reported that the named both as OC to prevent other teams from interviewing both of them for vacant OC jobs. The rule is another team can interview them for a higher position but not a lateral move. So they only position they could have interviewed for was an HC job

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Was Robert Jones better or worse than Jessie Davis as OT yesterday?

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Lol

In this scenario does Flores retain playcalling duties?

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

So let me get this right

We benched Davis in the final game of the season
Then the guy who replaced him was injured by the half
And we went back to Jessie Davis

I mean what the actual fuck

  76. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

“Oh you want to bench me or trade for Watson?” Well, the exit is on the first floor”

  77. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess the fact we only have like 8 players under contract going into next season means our next HC can clean house pretty easily…

  78. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    So who’s out there?

Matt Nagy comes in and brings Vic Fangio with him to run the defense?

Doug Pederson who was mentioned by me and Piggy – has ties to the organization as a backup during the Marino/Scott Mitchell years. Also known to run the RPO.

Does anyone think Byron Leftwich can run a team?

I’m not sure of how much Bienemy has to do with the success of the Chiefs.

Anthony Lynn has HC experience and helped guide Herbert in his rookie year.

Do you go after Marvin Lewis who did more with less in Cinncinatti?

Who are the hot college coaches?

I see a lot of names, but don’t get much excitement looking at the names.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I just heard on Carton and Roberts that part of the rift with Grier and Flores was that Flores wanted us to draft Herbert and Grier took Tua. Flores was also the guy that wanted Watson. So he was not on board with Tua. Obviously it’s rumor type stuff but it kind of adds up.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The Herbert part is well known

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s rumor but yeah it’s adds up

And on the field, you can see that Flores did not have faith in Tua – even yesterday

I’m pretty sure M13 touched upon this yesterday

Even yesterday, the Dolphins tightened up like some one getting ready for their first colonoscopy once they had the lead

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Well that and they wouldn’t just commit to his development on the field. Pulling him in games for Fitzpatrick, pulling him in third downs and redzone opportunities to run the wildcat or use Brissett.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think some of that was due to the heavy rain so we kept it on the ground. We did run for 195 yards and won so it worked.

  80. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This has to be a complete coaching and scheme reset, right? You don’t keep the coordinators, and the defensive scheme leaves with Flores and Boyer?

We likely still run RPO with Tua, but again, still a scheme reset.

My mind is railing at another damn reboot…

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Me too. Who’s to say the person who comes here wants to keep Tua or not? Then we have to use another 1st or second round pick on a QB. This team is close. We just have to invest in the offense. Whoever comes in needs to be smart enough to know what good and bad we have here and not just make whole sale changes. They can impelement their own footprint over time. I’m not looking forward to another adjustment reboot year.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The next few weeks are going to be interesting, seeing the names we bring in for interviews.

  81. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

You know it’s interesting seeing all these former Dolphins staffers and players when I look out into the coaching landscape. Zac Taylor and his crew up in Cincy. Brian Daboll used to be our coordinator, Dan Quinn DL Coach , Doug Pederson, Matt Nagy used Bill Lazor as an OC at one point. Anyone remember that guy? Todd Bowles, Patrick Graham.
I keep seeing names of guys that we ran out of town from all the coaching changes. Shows you how much of a club it is.

  82. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Even with a new reboot and parting ways with Tua, that’s better resources than trading the house for watson

  83. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Who the hell will want this job to work for Ross? Serious question

  84. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This seems to be a pretty reasonable take on it

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Whenever I see a HC firing, that doesn’t make any sense, I go back to Houston firing Bum Phillips

They couldn’t get past Pitt, so they tried bringing someone else in to take the next step, as a result they sucked for a long time

  86. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve been wandering around my house aimlessly for hours trying to figure out what the hell I’m doing. I never knew just how in tune I am with the Dolphins organization, lol.

  88. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

So far I think Doug Pederson is the best match. I think he’d be able to sort out this offense and be sensible enough to run a similar if not same defense.

I only wish that X, while in throwbacks, had done the Zach Thomas flip into the end zone. Yes I know it would have been different throwbacks but nonetheless it would have a nice nod while Zach awaits again. And he better get in!

I like the Doug Pederson idea. I have his autograph on a Dolphin Digest photo of when Shula broke the record and Pederson was QB that day

If we are going the first time HC route Pedersen is probably as good as we can do

  92. Ken's avatar Ken says:

We spent 3 years developing a first time HC. Was he perfect? Absolutely not. But he was a first time HC and he put together 2 winning seasons in a row. It just feels like another example of us developing talent and not retaining it

    wasn’t Pedersen HC of Philly?

I think Ross goes with an experienced guy.

I’m bummed about firing Flores but Doug Pederson would be a candidate, I thought he proved to be a good HC in Philly and didn’t understand why they moved on so quickly after he won them a Super Bowl. Just remember no HC has ever won a Super Bowl with 2 teams. It’s one of those crazy stats in NFL history.

As long as we’re discussing first time head coaches…why not Harbaugh he was once a first time head coach too🤔

  97. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think we should get someone with exp. Ross doesn’t have the patience for a first time HC

What we really need is a multi-man GM like our entire board, instead of these whackjob FAs we’d have consensus to keep it in line

    22nd

Anyone have a guess as to what those three numbers mean
