Dolphins franchise presses reset button . . . Again!

I know Brian Flores wasn’t perfect, I watch all the games and see this team play every week. Once the Dolphins fired Flores, it’s amazing how quickly the negative stories came out. Look, some of them are probably true, and others are just silly. I’ll never know the veracity of all of them and frankly, it doesn’t matter. I was ready to hitch my wagon to Flores and for a decade or so. I mean as a Dolphins fan, you just have to be tired of the turnover here. We’ve seen this now far too many times since the new millennium. In 2000, Dave Wannstedt was our Head Coach. In 2005 Satan, er Nick Saban took over. In 2007 we got the Cam Cameron show for all of 1 year, and with his 1-15 record, one year too many. Then Bill Parcells came to town with his lazy uninspired plan to fix the Dolphins for owner Wayne Huizenga. He brought Jeff Ireland (GM), Head Coach Tony Sparano, and OC Dan Henning and DC Paul Pasqualoni. Thanks Bill for your efforts! Near the end of the 2011 season, Todd Bowles replaced Tony Sparano. In 2012, as if Bill Parcells grand plan wasn’t uninspiring enough, Stephen Ross hired Head Coach Joe Phibin. Joe somehow was allowed to muddle through 4 seasons here boring Dolphins fans everywhere. In 2016, we hired Head Coach Adam Gase, that of “Offensive Guru” status. We was offensive alright. Maybe Ross realized that he gave Philbin one too many so he cut Gase’s tenure at 3 years. In 2019 we hired the young, fiery defensive coordinator from the rival Patriots. Yes, another Belichick disciple. Flores was given only 3 years, perhaps once again harking back to Joe Philbin getting 4 years. If you’re wondering, since the year 2000, the Dolphins record is 176-183. Uninspiring.

I’m not going to touch any of the stories circulating regarding why Flores may have been fired. We saw the offense as an ineffective unit. Flores’ defensive pedigree had this team’s defense ahead of the offense during his 3 year tenure. Not that the defense was a championship level defense, it wasn’t, but compared to the offense it may have looked that way. Our offensive line has been an issue for years and despite Grier’s attempts to bring in talent to remedy the situation, drafting OT Liam Eichenberg in RD 2 (#42) in 2021, OT Austin Jackson in RD 1 in 2020 (#18), OG Robert Hunt in RD 2 (#39), and OG Solomon Kindley (#111) in RD 4. In 2019 we drafted OC Michael Deiter in RD 3 (#78). It’s certainly not due to a lack of effort, but our 2021 O-line was ranked dead last at #32. Truth be told, I feel we have talented players on that line, but Flores’ choice of Lemuel Jeanpierre seems to be the linchpin. This is a unit that must be fixed in order for this team’s offense to be successful. I hope whoever the new HC is realizes that a great veteran O-line Coach is necessary here. Notice how I haven’t once mentioned Tua? If I could talk to him, I’d tell him this . . .

So now the search begins, and I really don’t have a strong feeling as to who the new Head Coach will be. I have to admit I’m a little concerned that we didn’t clean house completely. If Chris Grier was fired as well, you find a GM and then that GM hires the new coach. Now, despite not getting fired, you have the appearance of a GM who may be on the hot seat hiring a new Head Coach and that makes the job less appealing. As if having 8 Head Coaches in the last 21 years isn’t unappealing enough!!! The good thing Dolphins fans, is that there are only 32 Head Coaching jobs and we have an opening, so there will be lots of interest regardless of the aforementioned pitfalls. We have a young, talented roster that some coach is going to be thrilled to take the helm of. Plenty of money in Free Agency will be available as well, close to $70M. We have a defensive unit on the rise with potential to be a top 10 defense if the offense gets on track. Some of that $70M will have to be used to re-sign our own players. DE Emmanuel Ogbah, TE Mike Gesicki, WR/ST Mack Hollins, TE Durham Smythe, LB Elandon Roberts and DB Nik Needham. RB Duke Johnson will probably be taken care of as well. I think Ogbah is the top priority, he’s been great since he got here and is an important piece of this defense. I think Gesicki should also be a priority but it depends on what type of TE the new HC is looking for. If he wants a receiving threat TE then Gesicki will be back. If he wants a blocking TE then it’s more likely Durham Smythe comes back and Gesicki goes elsewhere. Mack Hollins is becoming a better WR and is invaluable as a special teams player. I also hope we re-sign Nik Needham, I like that kid, and he always exceeds expectations.

Defensive players like CB Xavien Howard, CB Byron Jones, S Jevon Holland and S Brandon Jones will be sure to help lure a potential HC here. LB’s Jerome Baker and Andrew Van Ginkel as well, and of course young DE/LB Jaelan Phillips. On offense, rookie sensation WR Jaylen Waddle is a great start, but the falloff is big after that. Free agency and the draft are going to both be used to bring in talent at WR to complement Jaylen Waddle. Running back has to be a priority as well and if you know me, I want to draft one, not overpay for one in FA. Draft a RB early enough to procure one of the best RB’s in this draft, add in one of the holdovers like Myles Gaskin, re-sign Duke Johnson and pick up a FA RB that won’t break the bank. How we proceed at TE interests me. I’m very curious to see if we keep Mike Gesicki and/or Durham Smythe.

Here’s hoping we make the right choice for our new Head Coach, whomever he may be. Here’s hoping this new Head Coach can be successful enough to be here more than 10 years. Here’s also hoping we made the right choice retaining GM Chris Grier. Here’s hoping for a full recovery for our friend Jon “Stanger”. Here’s hoping for all of us to stay healthy in 2022.

Crazy weather system here. It’s 40 degrees and raining 3.5 hours north in Birmingham, AL.

Here in Pensacola, FL it is 36 and spitting snow flurries.

Winter storm warning, wind, snow, sleet and ice. My sister and niece are trying to convince me to come to my mom’s, we have a generator there for her house. Apparently they are already there, going through old family photo albums, sending me pics of when I was maybe 8. 😂

    I’m staying here.

LOCAL WEATHER REPORTS suggesting there “may” have been a small tornado near the town of Arcadia (best known for its KKK marches thru downtown areas on some holidays). However, hard evidence of tornado activity is still lacking. But, you know, local TV stations need to sell advertising, so why not “spice-up” the weather reports to induce more TV watchers?? It’s a trend here in Florida as more broadcast stations chase revenues, even if the ACCURACY of the reports is called into question.

BASICALLY, we’ve had less than an inch of rain here in the north of Tampa suburbs. And ONE PALM FROND is laying in the street, the sum total of the “damage” from this passing weather front in our neighborhood. Weather for the Buccaneer’s home playoff game against the Eagles at 1:00 PM is predicted to be in the mid-60’s with cloudy skies and a chance for a little rain. I’m terrified!!
    ——————-

Celebrated my birthday yesterday!! My wife bought me a new, really neat, watch to replaced my 13-year old creaking model!! I had a truly wonderful day! And our dinner at our local fav restaurant couldn’t have been better!
    ——————-
JUST A THOUGHT on a POSSIBLE coaching candidate for the Fins.
THIS GUY has been a head coach in the NFL.
This guy has been a head coach at FAU and at least 3 major universities.
This guy was around (I believe) when Tua was at Alabama and knows him
    VERY WELL.
This guy lead OLE MISS to a 10-win season, their FIRST 10-win season in their storied history!!
OLE MISS ended up ranked, I believe, #6 0r #7 in the rankings at the end of this season!!
    —————-
BY NOW, all of you have figured out his name is LANE KIFFIN. And he is JUST THE OFFENSIVE minded kind of guy this franchise needs to succeed at the highest levels.
    —————
NOW I KNOW he has somewhat of a checkered past, often leaving one program for a better program OR, in the case of FAU, a chance to be a head coach again where he led FAU to two seasons ranked in the Top 25 in their history and 2 lopsided Bowl Games (where Devin Singletary and others played a prominent role in blowout bowl victories). HE HAS SUCCEEDED.
    ————–
NOW I MUST ADMIT I doubt Kiffin would even consider the Dolphins. He’s making a big salary at Ole Miss. They LOVE HIM and would, if they had to, raise his pay to NFL numbers to keep him.
And I firmly believe he is HAPPY AT OLE MISS and would NOT turn to working for a jerk like Steve Ross. HOWEVER, if Bruce Beal was calling the shots, Kiffin’s attitude might change. But, I sense, Ross is NOT ABOUT TO GIVE UP HIS OWNERSHIP because, in his own heart, he believes he knows what he’s doing, football-wise!!
    ————
SO WE WON’T GET KIFFIN. We WILL get yet ANOTHER FAILED COACH who, surprisingly, will also fail in Miami. Then, at some point, Ross will pass away, having left behind a legacy of playoff failure that almost defies belief.
    ————
Y’all have a great day, Dolfans!

    OD
Look out Bro, weather headed your way
(and yes especially in Arcadia, where they have a big time rodeo).
here in Fort Myers, we were under tornado warning this morning from 7:30-10AM.
A funnel cloud touched down in Cypress Lake which is where my eldest son went to high school. That’s about 6-10 miles from where I now live.
That’s the second tornado touching down in the neighborhood in 2 weeks.
Historically, tornadoes are very rare here… I don’t remember one on dry land in Naples ever.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I feel like if there’s one thing that Flores did well here (besides sweeping the patsies*),
it was the renovation of the roster and recruiting guys who love to play football and building camaraderie, especially on the defense.
    This is important.
    So
I’m hoping that the new HC can keep those van Ginkel / Seiler types of guys and keep our band of brothers together on defense.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So I think we should spend our money on resigning Ogbah, Gesicki, and whichever others of our own FAs that give us that exciting never give up type of play.
    cuz
I’m leery of giving a guy big bucks to come in here from another team.
FAs are notorious for having a fall off after signing a big contract.
What will be his motivation to give 110%?

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’d rather draft a first round RT, a 2nd round RB, and a 3rd round ILB (or some combo thereof).
Maybe double up on RB with the 4th and ILB with the 5th just in case one bombs
Plus we could get a 4th round WR.

Is anyone else relaxed knowing Mac Jones is the patriots QB in 2022?

Remember when people were suggesting he was rookie of the year?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I admit that watching him against us game 1 that I was impressed. He stood in the pocket and delivered a lot of really accurate throws as the pressure hit him a second after he threw. Why he doesn’t get any of the scrutiny Tua gets is confusing though. Tua, nationally gets questioned and doubted constantly while it seems Mac Jones is universally praised

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Well, first of all he plays for the Pats. Second, he led all rookie QBs in yards, completion percentage and I think TDs. So the scrutiny is not deserved yet.

PS: Mike E.–Congrats for yet another sterling article. We are SO LUCKY to have you!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

PPS: BRIAN. Unless you’re talking Marino, I think it’s VERY DANGEROUS to evluate a QB after just one season. Remember, Elway was BENCHED during much of his rookie season while Marino blossomed. Eventually BOTH PROVED they were, indeed, worthy of a first round selection.

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – this year Tua’s stats are so similar to Jones’. Completion % is within tenths of a percentage, both TD % and INT% as well, Jones 4.2 and 2.5, Tua 4.1 and 2.6. I know Tua isn’t a rookie but he’s close enough to a rookie. Remember he had no preseason and training camp last year.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Man, talk about a fucking lazy, uninspired hack job of an article . . . The article is solely based on grading the Dolphins QB. They give Tua a “C” for his 78.1 QBR. Problem is, he had a 90.1 QBR this season. I mean, c’mon!!!

    https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/lists/grading-the-miami-dolphins-quarterbacks-after-their-2021-season/

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

What kills me with that is it isn’t like it’s a long article or filled with a ton of stats. Just a few paragraphs with a couple of key stats- and you get one of your keys stats wrong? smh

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s gonna just have to keep playing his way through all the nonsense. Add some more talent on the OL, WR and RB and I really believe he will thrive and win a lot of games. He already wins as he’s developing on a sub par offense. How could he not get better?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s amazing to me how some people keep their jobs

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So the guy made a mistake with the QBR, but so did you his QBR was 50.4, his rating was 90.1, but besides the error, what do you disagree with?

In 13 games, Tagovailoa completed 67.8% of his attempts for 2,653 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 78.1 passer rating. He was clearly impacted by poor play-calling and offensive line play ahead of him, but the second-year quarterback wasn’t doing a lot that was special this past season.

He gave Tua a C for not doing a lot special

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With Hurts kind of sucking this game and if Twatson doesn’t follow Flores, he could end up in Philly since they have 3 first round picks this year.

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No roughing the passer there? Guarantee Brady would have got that call

This is the first time I’ve watched Hurts. He really doesn’t look very good.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watching these playoff games I see the losing teams doing things we bitched about Flores doing, like going for it on 4th down too early in the game, and when you don’t get it, it contributes to the lopsided final score

Also the penalties seem to be 1- sided

  45. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, Eagles just can’t get out of their own way.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Sounds a lot like us

Can we really beat a good team with our current OL?

Are the cheats a good team or do they fit this mold too?

Sure they beat Bills once, but it was weather aided.

Our signature win was against Balt., but was aided by a home Thursday game against a team not playing good

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well I consider the Ravens and last Pats game quality wins. We beat the Ravens when they were at the top of the AFC. We started their spiral. We outplayed the Pats from the get go even though the score got close.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we made the playoffs we would have likely played the Chiefs or Bills. We’re not beating either of them.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fair enough opinion, but neither team has a playoff win

Our crappy team with a little luck probably wins 1 more game and makes playoffs, like if Tua was healthy all year, but wouldn’t change the fact we weren’t a God team

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Philly would be smart to draft QB Pickett or Howell, snag a WR and continue to build their D with their picks instead trading for Watson.

Heck no, she’s Dolphins all the way, bro. Toba’s wife is the Niners fan.

When my wife and I first started dating, she realized the way to my heart was Dolphins football. Our first couple years I had a whiteboard in the living room on Sundays and I taught her the game. Now she can talk Xs and Os, scheme, and players with anyone.

I’m loving her all over again just talking about it, lol.

Oh okay, my bad. That’s awesome!!!

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – That 50.6 is ESPN’s QBR, which is their own funky formula that no one except ESPN pays attention to. I’m not going to bother reading the article again to be honest, it just made me laugh that it was an article about grades and they fucked up the grades. I’ve never seen anyone quote ESPN’s QBR over the NFL’s standard QBR.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s also not an official NFL stat. I think it might be FF related.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Other than the mistake on the QBR which in the context of this particular article is pretty important, Tua went 7-5 while Brissett was 2-3 (Brissett gets the W for the Ravens game which Tua played the 2nd half of and played well). I think Tua should get a B-, considering how awful the O-line was. Also considering Tua was sacked 20 times in 12 + games while Brissett was sacked 19 times in 4 + games. Seem about right now?

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – That’s awesome. That was a great idea with the whiteboard, and obviously your wife is a sport to want to learn.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

She was so down, it was great. She knew it was a huge thing in my life and wanted to be part of it. At first the whiteboard just had the base Xs and Os showing the position names so she could reference it as we were watching and talking during a game. Then, once she had the positions down, we started talking about schemes and rules. Now she’s just one of the guys with her football. She calls out penalties and shyte just like the rest of us, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“Now she’s just one of the guys with her football. She calls out penalties and shyte just like the rest of us, lol.”

Well she is human right? LOL

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The 49ers are a tough physical team. The running game is awesome! Their passing game goes through tough stretches though.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, in my mind Tua finished 6.5-1 down the stretch. In the Ravens game that 6 play 75 yard drive for the final score put the game away 22-10 with Tua scoring on the 1 yard TD run. He’s got some gamer in him. He thrives on winning over stats, but the stats will come when we upgrade the offense which has to happen. 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Not much difference between a B- and a B

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No I wasn’t saying that. I’m not sure we win the Ravens games with Brissett playing the entire game. He was not playing well. Our defense was killing Jackson and their offense. Tua made some plays to put the game away.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    This is the story of the song;
Why is it called Strawberry Letter 23 not 22?
Strawberry Letter 23 was originally a song by Shuggie Otis. (https://youtu.be/iAPPAJ1sT8g) At age 17, Otis wrote “Strawberry Letter 23” as way to describe his romantic feelings for his girlfriend. Though the lyrics commonly refer to “Strawberry Letter 22,” Otis explains that, “the song is about a love letter. The guy and the girl had written each other 22 love letters. And the 23rd one, he writes is a song.”

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – thanks for the Strawberry 23 info. Cool!

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Cowboys finally get a stop

  66. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Cowboys have abandoned the run

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Deebo Samuel is an awesome player.

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Great play on that INT. That throw was easier for the DB to catch but still a great catch for a DB. That throw had some pace to it.

    Fuck you Chris Grier

  70. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Looks like we will be selecting later than 24th

  71. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Cowboys choking

  72. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Debo is a beast

  73. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I do love the way the Niners run that offense

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Waddle, Phillips and Holland are the best draft I can remember. If Tua pans out long term, you’re still killing Grier. Look at the makeup of the defense. The offense has to get better.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s very unpopular to to compliment the front office these days

But I agree the 2021 draft was a home run

I was saying it early this season at 1-7, more than anything coaching was killing us IMO

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Just pointing out something to root for ( a higher pick) and the fact it ended up being a mistake to offer our pick instead of SFs. It is what us fans are here to do. Criticize after the fact lol

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It was a great draft. Its been reported that it was our decision to give our pick and keep the Niners pick but I don’t know if that is true or not

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Cowboys with their 900th penalty

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Guys!!! We already know Waddle is really good. Let it go!!! Oh my, we lost our #15 pick for one in the 20’s in 2022, and also have two 1’s in 2023. Along with the most cap space in 2022. I don’t get the problem?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We did not have to lose our pick. Grier chose the wrong pick

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe he thought we were going to be the better team. I don’t really look at it as a mistake. And it’s not a big deal in the big scheme of things. This isn’t franchise changing stuff.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we have earlier picks, I expect people to argue that it doesn’t matter how high we pick when don’t pick well….

It actually doesn’t matter where you pick – it’s who you pick

We actually wanted waddle instead of chase or pitts last year, and the movement shows that
As it turns out they are all good players with good seasons and waddle was perfect or us

The best thing you can do is nail the picks that you have and we did that in 2021

I know my vices guys: it’s never enough for me. I always want more receivers, more running backs and more pass rushers – so I will always find room to complain

And we all complain a lot bc we view this team under a microscope, but in this case, try to look at the entire 2021 draft and the moves we made

I think we might be thinking about trading down this year anyway
If we can get multiple picks in the 25-50 range, we can really improve this offense quickly

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right! It’s not a big deal. We didn’t lose draft picks, we gained them and swapped our picks. I think a lot of us were expecting 10-7 and the playoffs. That would be in the 20’s no? We can upgrade this team and especially the offense easily this offseason.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Nice call!!!!

  78. Ken's avatar Ken says:

That was the best pass the Cowboys threw all game

  79. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Stupid penalties

  80. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Huge play. Cowboys have a chance to get right into this game

  81. Ken's avatar Ken says:

There is the Jimmy G brain fart we have become accustomed to

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, that may be a bad injury for Warner.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    That sucks – Warner.

  84. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Yes!!

  85. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

This game just went up a notch.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m rooting for our 2022 1st RD pick

  87. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Tim, there really isn’t anything to “let go” of, it is just a rooting interest: something that might benefit our team, on the surface.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fair enough, but after #15 is not anything to get worried about. It’s as if all the other awesome stuff doesn’t matter.

  88. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Cowboys don’t deserve to win this game with all these stupid penalties

  89. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If it wasn’t for our pick I would be rooting for SF

  90. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That was a great tackle. Man, this game got good in the last quarter

  91. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Good news that it wasn’t a serious injury for Warner. I thought it was a knee

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wow ceedee lamb – you can’t let the ball pop up like that there

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wanting another pick is one thing, acting like it’s the end of the world is another thing. We didn’t give up a top 5 pick.

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

77 was criminally holding the DE on that one

  95. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s fitting this game is basically ended on a Cowboy penalty.

  96. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Stupid penalty God I hate the Cowboys
