Dolphins franchise presses reset button . . . Again!

I know Brian Flores wasn’t perfect, I watch all the games and see this team play every week. Once the Dolphins fired Flores, it’s amazing how quickly the negative stories came out. Look, some of them are probably true, and others are just silly. I’ll never know the veracity of all of them and frankly, it doesn’t matter. I was ready to hitch my wagon to Flores and for a decade or so. I mean as a Dolphins fan, you just have to be tired of the turnover here. We’ve seen this now far too many times since the new millennium. In 2000, Dave Wannstedt was our Head Coach. In 2005 Satan, er Nick Saban took over. In 2007 we got the Cam Cameron show for all of 1 year, and with his 1-15 record, one year too many. Then Bill Parcells came to town with his lazy uninspired plan to fix the Dolphins for owner Wayne Huizenga. He brought Jeff Ireland (GM), Head Coach Tony Sparano, and OC Dan Henning and DC Paul Pasqualoni. Thanks Bill for your efforts! Near the end of the 2011 season, Todd Bowles replaced Tony Sparano. In 2012, as if Bill Parcells grand plan wasn’t uninspiring enough, Stephen Ross hired Head Coach Joe Phibin. Joe somehow was allowed to muddle through 4 seasons here boring Dolphins fans everywhere. In 2016, we hired Head Coach Adam Gase, that of “Offensive Guru” status. We was offensive alright. Maybe Ross realized that he gave Philbin one too many so he cut Gase’s tenure at 3 years. In 2019 we hired the young, fiery defensive coordinator from the rival Patriots. Yes, another Belichick disciple. Flores was given only 3 years, perhaps once again harking back to Joe Philbin getting 4 years. If you’re wondering, since the year 2000, the Dolphins record is 176-183. Uninspiring.

I’m not going to touch any of the stories circulating regarding why Flores may have been fired. We saw the offense as an ineffective unit. Flores’ defensive pedigree had this team’s defense ahead of the offense during his 3 year tenure. Not that the defense was a championship level defense, it wasn’t, but compared to the offense it may have looked that way. Our offensive line has been an issue for years and despite Grier’s attempts to bring in talent to remedy the situation, drafting OT Liam Eichenberg in RD 2 (#42) in 2021, OT Austin Jackson in RD 1 in 2020 (#18), OG Robert Hunt in RD 2 (#39), and OG Solomon Kindley (#111) in RD 4. In 2019 we drafted OC Michael Deiter in RD 3 (#78). It’s certainly not due to a lack of effort, but our 2021 O-line was ranked dead last at #32. Truth be told, I feel we have talented players on that line, but Flores’ choice of Lemuel Jeanpierre seems to be the linchpin. This is a unit that must be fixed in order for this team’s offense to be successful. I hope whoever the new HC is realizes that a great veteran O-line Coach is necessary here. Notice how I haven’t once mentioned Tua? If I could talk to him, I’d tell him this . . .

So now the search begins, and I really don’t have a strong feeling as to who the new Head Coach will be. I have to admit I’m a little concerned that we didn’t clean house completely. If Chris Grier was fired as well, you find a GM and then that GM hires the new coach. Now, despite not getting fired, you have the appearance of a GM who may be on the hot seat hiring a new Head Coach and that makes the job less appealing. As if having 8 Head Coaches in the last 21 years isn’t unappealing enough!!! The good thing Dolphins fans, is that there are only 32 Head Coaching jobs and we have an opening, so there will be lots of interest regardless of the aforementioned pitfalls. We have a young, talented roster that some coach is going to be thrilled to take the helm of. Plenty of money in Free Agency will be available as well, close to $70M. We have a defensive unit on the rise with potential to be a top 10 defense if the offense gets on track. Some of that $70M will have to be used to re-sign our own players. DE Emmanuel Ogbah, TE Mike Gesicki, WR/ST Mack Hollins, TE Durham Smythe, LB Elandon Roberts and DB Nik Needham. RB Duke Johnson will probably be taken care of as well. I think Ogbah is the top priority, he’s been great since he got here and is an important piece of this defense. I think Gesicki should also be a priority but it depends on what type of TE the new HC is looking for. If he wants a receiving threat TE then Gesicki will be back. If he wants a blocking TE then it’s more likely Durham Smythe comes back and Gesicki goes elsewhere. Mack Hollins is becoming a better WR and is invaluable as a special teams player. I also hope we re-sign Nik Needham, I like that kid, and he always exceeds expectations.

Defensive players like CB Xavien Howard, CB Byron Jones, S Jevon Holland and S Brandon Jones will be sure to help lure a potential HC here. LB’s Jerome Baker and Andrew Van Ginkel as well, and of course young DE/LB Jaelan Phillips. On offense, rookie sensation WR Jaylen Waddle is a great start, but the falloff is big after that. Free agency and the draft are going to both be used to bring in talent at WR to complement Jaylen Waddle. Running back has to be a priority as well and if you know me, I want to draft one, not overpay for one in FA. Draft a RB early enough to procure one of the best RB’s in this draft, add in one of the holdovers like Myles Gaskin, re-sign Duke Johnson and pick up a FA RB that won’t break the bank. How we proceed at TE interests me. I’m very curious to see if we keep Mike Gesicki and/or Durham Smythe.

Here’s hoping we make the right choice for our new Head Coach, whomever he may be. Here’s hoping this new Head Coach can be successful enough to be here more than 10 years. Here’s also hoping we made the right choice retaining GM Chris Grier. Here’s hoping for a full recovery for our friend Jon “Stanger”. Here’s hoping for all of us to stay healthy in 2022.

So we’re talking about things to root for. I love that Minkah being on the Steelers gives me a reason to actively root against the Steelers. Year after year, some of the best players in the league are picked between 25-50
Pass rushers, WRs, and RBs especially

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The only people making a big deal out of wanting a better pick seem to be the people saying it isn’t a big deal, lol.

There is a difference between not wanting to stub your toe and saying stubbing your toe is a fatal injury.

Nobody who is rooting for a better pick is saying the fate of our team depends on it, the world will end if we don’t get a higher pick, or anything dramatic like that. Nobody is saying you can’t get a good player at pick #26 or at #32.

We’re simply rooting for a better pick, and for some unfathomable reason some people have to turn it into something else.

I guarantee every GM in the league, and every potential GM, and every HC, and every owner, and every single person associated with any NFL team would rather have pick #18 than pick #26. Why on earth wouldn’t some of us fans root for that too? It’s pretty weird to call people out for something so fundamentally obvious.

I mean if we the fans got to choose which pick would you really say ‘give me pick #26 instead of #18? No, because that would be idiotic.

Why not call people out for wanting certain players or teams to win for fantasy football reasons? That is way dumber than rooting for a better pick for your team.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not Trying to bust chops

But if you look at receivers, running backs and pass rushers there are just a lot of really good ones in the late first early to mid 2nd round

It’s surprising how ,any of the leagues best players are there

A team really just has to nail the picks

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can totally agree there, Piggy. You have to hit your picks no matter where they are and a good GM will get you a good player wherever that pick lands.

And I don’t think it’s weird to not really care if or pick is at 18 or 26. It’s not a requisite, lol. But I do care, and so do a lot of others, and I’m going to keep pushing back on the idea that we’re wrong for that.

For me, the answer is yes, let me have that week of fun and anticipation, plus playoff experience for the players and team.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can think of exceptions though. In the same vein is Marino’s final game. I would rather we lost the week before rather than have that game.

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watching the Dallas game it showed Diggs and his 11 ints an all pro, but he can’t cover for shit, hate those kind of CBs, next year with 2 ints he’ll be rated the 60th CB

  53. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Steve, I don’t think KC looks at those as trick plays. It’s just the way they run their offense.

Next week, they might run the same thing but have two or three new option wrinkles off it instead, then again the next week; or maybe they don’t used that package, instead it’s 4 or 5 other packages that most would consider trick plays they’ve used in prior weeks.

But Buffalo will now have to prepare for that look either way because KC showed it.

I don’t think they look at it as ‘save this for next week’ because they always have another package, another wrinkle anyway and you just can’t prepare for it all. They do it every week.

JMO, Reid doesn’t confide in me or anything, lol.

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D, I get where some of you are coming from. We will get a good player no matter where we pick in the 1st round. We can all agree on that. No one is ready to jump off a building because of where our pick is ending up. Are we going to miss on some players some of us really wanted to get? We will but we will still get a good player. There is nothing wrong with rooting against a team to get a better draft position.

What some are not taking into account is that this draft is the worst in at least a decade as far as top level talent, IMO. Talent wise, picking in the bottom of the 1st round of this draft will be like picking at #40 in other drafts. Especially last year’s draft.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Right. Another way to look at it is this way : I’m giving you the choice of the #15 pick or the # 25 pick. I think we know what everyone would say to that.

I feel like Philly consistently gets the better of us in trades. I would have made the play for the lower pick- maybe they did and Philly rejected it. They got Smith and the 15th pick for their #6 pick. That’s a pretty
      Damn good trade for them.

  59. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t like the Bears putting in a request to interview McKenzie. I would guess that he has been a valuable resource for Grier to rely upon. He did a really good job when he was with the Raiders.

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t care about the pick we traded to get Waddle. That was last year and it is what it is. We knew that coming into this season.

I just don’t see what is wrong to root against a team so we get better draft position in a really poor draft. If SF missed the playoffs we would have picked at #17. That’s what we were rooting for. They won and made the playoffs and we dropped 5 spots to #22. Not a major deal. We would have stayed there had they lost to Dallas. That’s what we were rooting for. Instead, they win and now we are at #26. If they pull off a miracle in GB, our pick will fall to #29. We will be rooting against that.

Some say there is no difference in picking between 15 or 17 (which ever) to 22, then, again, say it’s not much difference from 22 to 26. Then, will say again there is no difference from 26 to 29. In THIS DRAFT, there is a huge difference in picking at 15 or 17 and picking at 29.

The majority on here say we need to fix the OL in free agency and draft an elite WR in the 1st. A true potential #1 to compliment Waddle. You aren’t going to get that WR at #26 in THIS DRAFT but had a much better chance at #17.

So please excuse us for wanting that next elite WR to go with Waddle.

    😉

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It really depends. Williams being out definitely hurts is in that regard, because that’s one less WR to take. I think we can get Dotson, Olave, and Metchie there.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Obviously, I agree with you, lol. Unfortunately, I also think San Fran has a good chance to win in GB. It’s going to be a tight game.

This all started because some of us were actively rooting for the Rams to win in week 18. I can’t believe this is the elite Dolphins fanbase on this board (we like to think), and we have to explain and defend ourselves for wanting a better pick.

I am so nuts about this football stuff I refuse to play fantasy football or even weekly pools because I don’t want conflicting rooting interests; and forget about me going to a wedding or birthday party on Sundays during the season, not happening…and my wanting a better pick is where the battle line is drawn? lmao

As an aside, I’m also with you on the Waddle pick. I’m glad we got Waddle, he’s a stud, I don’t care we used an additional resource to make sure we got him.

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL @ D. I’ll leave the panty wearing, girl fantasizing to you, my friend, since you have the nuances down so well you’re giving advice on it. Kongs are more like pigs anyway when it comes to undergarments and pants. We prefer to go unadorned.

Your panty proclivities and big girl fantasies aside, my point still remains the same as I am forced to say it over and over- I know it’s not the end of the world that our pick continues to drop. No one who cares has said that. I outlined that in near perfect English in my last post on the subject. 😉

The only people introducing the concept it is a huge deal are Tim and now you. You guys seem to want to tell us we think it’s a big deal, then tell us you don’t care, then can’t stop talking about how little a deal it is and how little you care about it.

Apparently it’s a bigger deal that some of us care than it is that we get a better pick, lol. Go figure 🤷

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

      Why are you so defensive?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Because it’s a response to a post directed at me where I’m busting chops in return while defending my point of view. That isn’t clear? lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

SB, to give you a real answer to what I think you’re asking…D and I have bantered strong in the past and he banters and busts chops very well. He busted my chops and I think he’ll take my post in the spirit intended.

If I misread him, then I’ll apologize right now. I saw myself as giving a good defense of my point of view while strongly returning his banter at the same time, but if it comes off as mean, it honestly wasn’t intended that way.

  62. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With all that said (LOL), if we still are looking at WR at #26 my hopes are that Treylon Burks, Arkansas, 6’3 232 pounds and runs a projected 4.45 will be there. There are 2 others who have big potential that may be there, Drake London, USC, 6’4 210 with projected 4.48 and Alec Pierce, Cincinnati, 6’3 213 with projected 4.39.

Burks is a beast! Pierce is an interesting one with his size and speed to take the top off a defense.

There are other “names” out there who were #1’s in college who had to be accounted for but are projected to run over 4.5 40’s and I worry about their ability to get separation in the NFL. We already seem to have that problem with WR’s getting separation and don’t think we need to add to it.

My thinking is you either take Burks if he is there, take a chance on Pierce or London or take one of the top LB’s of Nakobe Dean, UGA (if still there), Christian Harris, Alabama or Brandon Smith, PSU.

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    BBMike

I don’t care that people are rooting for another pick. I’m not holding that against anyone….lol

But the idea that a team misses out on an elite prospect at WR bc they don’t pick in the top 20 is just wrong

In 2020 Justin Jefferson and Brandon Aiyuk are 22 and 25
In 2019 Deebo Samuel was picked at 36
In 2018 Calvin Ridley at 26 and cortland Sutton at 40
In 2016 Michael Thomas at 47
    2014 DeVante Adams at 53
2013 Deadndre Hopkins at 27 and Cordarelle Patterson at 29

And of course in 2012 Ryan Tannehill at 12….lol

And this doesn’t even get into RB where the names are eye opening

This isn’t an anomaly. It isn’t tunsil wearing a gas mask. It’s likely to be the case bc of certain patterns the nfl follows every draft.

25-50 is always a sweet spot for talented skill players bc gms In the league value QB, OT, CB & DL/Edge players in the top 20 picks and that always pushes strong skill players down to that range

And teams picking in the first 15 picks are usually bad teams with new regimes, and those new regimes are either drafting their franchise QB or building up front

    NFL gms are fairly predictable

If you are picking a WR in the late first, you might be taking a player with the same draft grade as the 3rd or 4th best OT that went top 15

This isn’t wishful thinking guys – this is the nfls pattern

    So keep that in perspective

Now Im sure didn’t mean to be picking later, but if we were picking earlier, I might be honking trade down anyway

    Instead I’m just thinking trade up with our 2nd and 3rd pick….bc I’m a greedy 🐖

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

BTW, on the defense side of the ball, pass rusher like watt or safeties like our guy Holland are good examples of this

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I saw you mention the trade down yesterday, Piggy. Are you talking about wanting to trade down out of the 1st (regardless of where our pick is at)?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Possibly, it really depends how the draft shakes up

But if some one in the back end of the draft wants to move up and give up a 2nd or 3rd

Or even the ole belicheat trade out of the first round with a team picking early in the 2nd, we are still in that sweet spot and have increased our odds for multiple players in the sweet spot

I would rather have 3 players in the top 50 than 1 in the top 20

This isn’t a general rule but if we are looking at WR, RB and a 3-4 pass rusher, we have real good odds at hits in the piggy “sweet spot”

  64. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bryan, I have been up in the air about Metchie. He seems to be that guy who has benefitted from having other better receivers on the field (J. Williams this year and Waddle/Smith last year). He is one of those I was talking about who are projected to run over a 4.5 40.

One thing I like about all these Alabama WR’s coming out every year is they all seem very good at getting off the line against man/press coverage and getting into their routes. Metchie falls into that same group.

Whoever becomes our next HC and OC, I would love if they hired Alabama WR Coach Holmon Wiggins. He was huge as a WR coach at Memphis and there is a big reason Saban brought him to Alabama 2 years ago.

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I see a lot of talk about getting a WR early in the draft. Do you guys really think we need to spend our earlier picks on a WR? I know teams are not supposed to draft for need, but I think prioritization of positional need needs to at least come into it.

Main reason I was / am pissed about the Iggy pick. We had just made Howard the highest paid CB in the league and then brought it Jones as the highest paid guy in the same offseason. Sure, why not use that 1st round pick on a raw CB?

WE NEEDED RB’s & LB’s (and we still do!)

This season I see us needing OT, RB, C, LB in that order of priority (of need) What are the top 4 positions of need as you guys see it? In which order do you prioritize the need?

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I agree with you, but you are talking about previous drafts with good draft classes. This draft class is weak, so it makes a bigger difference than other drafts. This draft, 2nd round talent will get pulled into the bottom of the 1st round. Other years. first round talent gets pushed to the second round (Javon Holland, D’Andre Swift, Johnathan Taylor, etc.) This year, it matters more. Other years, not so much or not at all. My whole reasoning is based on this draft class. If this class was like last year, I would not even be talking about it……much. 😉

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Piggy, I think that is an egg before the chicken kind of thing. We had big play ability at WR we just never called big plays. We had speedy Albert Wilson big target go get it WR in Parker, Williams and Hollins.

Our play calling sucked. We constantly stacked WR’s on routes within 5 yards of each other. There were no big plays built into the route combinations the Coco’s kept calling.

I may be wrong. I am often enough. But I think we need O line and RB more than WR.

    YOUR PICKS
    R1 P22 C Tyler Linderbaum – Iowa
R2 P18 RB Kenneth Walker III – Michigan State
    R3 P34 EDGE Micheal Clemons – Texas A&M
R4 P16 WR Jalen Tolbert – South Alabama
R4 P20 OT Abraham Lucas – Washington State
    R5 P15 LB Brenton Cox – Florida
    R5 P37 RB Jerome Ford – Cincinnati
    R6 P22 K Blake Mazza – SMU
R6 P30 DL Nesta Jade Silvera – Miami
    R7 P3 FB Sean Dykes – Memphis

Linderbaum at #26(not 22) Potential through the roof.
Really like WR Jalen Tolbert in the 4th. Small school but can’t look past his size and speed, 6’3 195 4.45 projected.
Walker then Ford!! Ford in the 5th is a steal. Then add a FB, you son of a gun!
OT Lucas in the 4th could pay off really well.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Love that draft, but based on his potential and how well Humphrey is playing for KC, I think he’s long gone when we pick. We don’t have the teams clamoring for QBs this year, so the other positions will take priority. Now , if we were picking at 15…

  69. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t know if it is coaching, but we seem to really have issues fixing our oline through the draft. I would like to see us fix the oline in free agency this year. Sign a FA RT and at least one other oline position to inject some veteran stability.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Don’t know why Fanspeak shows us with two 4ths and two 5ths. I love Tolbert too. He kept showing up in my mocks so I did some research on him. Had surgery early on but was like 45% of South Alabama’s offense!

(Yes, I took my obligatory Full back and Kicker. LOL

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Micheal Clemons is a problem child with a rap sheet and likes his weed too much, but I think if he gets his head straight at 6-5 / 270 he can do some damage in the NFL across from Jaelan Phillips

I agree with you in Metchie- I like Dotson a lot towards the end of the 1st. His route running is superb, he has very good speed, great hands and has a knack for making the big play. Plus, he’s a PSU boy!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes, Dotson is listed at WR4 on some boards and as far as WR6 on some others behind Burks. I got him at WR3 ahead of Olave and Burks. If he is there and we address OL in FA, you got to take him at #26 and that would almost be a steal, IMO.

The Dolphins sent their own third-round selection to the Giants to move up from 50th overall in the second round last weekend to 42nd to take tackle Liam Eichenberg.
Round 4 — Own pick; pick from Pittsburgh
The pick from the Steelers was obtained Saturday when the Dolphins gave Pittsburgh their 2021 fifth-round selection.
    Round 5 — Own pick
The Dolphins are in line to get a compensatory pick for the loss of unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, according to overthecap.com. Those picks don’t become official until about a month before the draft.
Round 6 — Own pick; pick from New England
The pick from the Patriots is the one the Dolphins acquired in exchange for wide receiver Isaiah Ford, who ended up not playing a game for New England before he was released and rejoined Miami.
Round 7 — Pick from Tennessee; own pick to L.A. Rams

That is exactly what Tankathon shows and they update daily. I think you are right, your draft simulator shows potential comp picks which is cool. Tankathon doesn’t until it’s awarded. Tankathon’s draft #’s are kind of jacked up right now, as far as position, cause it looks like they are trying to compensate for potential comp picks without actually putting the comp picks in. I believe they have it right as far as being accurate since they are same as PFN. I think they are the only 2 sites that show the same. Even thedraftnetwork shows different.

Yes, with the potential throw in of a 5th for Godchaux if we get it.

We also POTENTIALLY may get an extra 3 this year and an extra 3 next year if the Bears hire McKenzie. These 3rds would be comp picks, not from the Bears which I misunderstood until I read the article on Dolphins Wire.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That would be great if we got a 5th for Godchaux but he signed a 2 year $15M deal with NE and we signed Adam Butler at 2 years $7.5M so I’m not sure if that would add up to a 5th.

Apparently the fans were throwing stuff at the refs, not the players. Either way, Dallas coaches and players are taking no responsibility for that dumb call at the end of the game. It’s all on the refs according to them.

Agreed, but I’m seeing a trend of Steve Ross tarring and feathering ANYBODY who he fires… and that goes over the last decade. His track record speaks for itself… and also speaks to why he can’t find a decent HC.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My bad… I thought Brian Flores was a decent HC.

If Ross wants to use his power to BURN people on their way out, he’s not going to get a decent hire as HC.

His love-fest with Jim Harbaugh suggests to me that he’ll be our next HC.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Some of us (Tim and I) would appreciate Brian Daboll as our next HC… but Daboll has seen firsthand who Steve Ross is and what he’s about: himself. Not sure Daboll would ever accept a HC gig in Miami under Steve Ross.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For me Ross, Grier and Flores allowed the Watson rumors to stick around all season until the trade deadline was over. Flores was fired not because of the offense, but because he turned people off within the organization. It was a divorce – irreconcilable differences.

We’ll see where the Watson drama gravitates to this offseason. Then we’ll know.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah not buying that. Your allowing your anti-Ross campaign to cloud your vision. Ross gives the team everything it needs. That’s all that matters to football people. Ross only gets involved when something is not working. We all know he’s made mistakes but firing Flores wasn’t his own personal witch hunt. Flores apparently alienated himself from too many people in the building. Seinfeld covered that too. LOL

Our young roster, draft situation and top cap space is also attractive to a new coach. 🙂

I don’t care about people rooting against SF for better pick, I just do t think it matters much. Again, none of y’all are hurting anything and that wasn’t what my first comment was about it was just that the difference in them winning that game doesn’t do much overall. Outside the top 10 maybe if it’s 15 you still grab a great player but really past 15 the guy you are getting is a player that in any draft you would get anywhere from 15-32. Y’all do you I’m gonna just wait for when the pick is in and start looking at who I think would be a good player there or if we really should just trade out and get more picks. I’m kinda leaning that way no matter where it ends up.
