Miami Dolphins – Where do we go from here?

There are so many moves the Miami Dolphins organization need to make, the most obvious one is hiring a new Head Coach, and having that Head Coach assemble an entire coaching staff. I liked Brian Flores. I liked his no nonsense personality, I liked his toughness. I didn’t like the staff he put together, and that includes revamping his staff last season. As the group Depeche Mode says, “Everything counts in large amounts”. Flores was the architect of a poor staff. I’m not picking on him because he’s gone, just stating the obvious. I can’t say whether his first season’s plan was just to work with guys familiar to him, or he simply had no NFL ties and took what he could get. In 2019, He brought both OC Chad O’Shea and DC Patrick Graham from the New England Patriots. In 2020, Flores tabbed long time NFL’er Chan Gailey, who was probably pretty sure he was never ever going to coach again, and named him OC. Not that Chan Gailey wasn’t qualified, but I’m sure Flores’ call was the ONLY call Chan Gailey received as far as NFL offers were concerned. Chan Gailey departs so in 2021, Flores has the brilliant idea of naming Co-OC’s (supposedly in order to keep any teams from stealing them away), so 2020 Tight Ends Coach George Godsey and 2020 Running Backs Coach Eric Studesville are promoted together to form the NFL’s first 2 headed Offensive Coordinator Duo. Sometimes having more is better, The Tucker had a center headlight in addition to the 2 common ones on either side of the front of the vehicle. The center headlight actually turned left when the car was turning left and right when the car was turning right. Ingenious! The Co-CO idea, not so much. The Dolphins offense was 22nd in the NFL scoring 20.1 PPG and if not for the defense setting up the offense so many times, it would have been considerably worse.

I’m going to recommend something I know many of you here won’t be in favor of. I can tell you, I’m not sure I’m in favor it myself. Hear me out though. You can build for now, or build for later. Instant gratification or long term success. Either can be satisfying. The problem with my recommendation is that one important step needs to happen before this can even be possible. Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh needs to step down from his current post. If that happens, I think we should be the first, and most likely the last to offer him a Head Coaching position in the NFL. When you hire a guy from the college ranks, you get a guy who knows all the college players, what they’re capable of, who the right ones are for what they want to accomplish, on both sides of the ball. What you usually get is a guy who doesn’t know the NFL, and how to deal with NFL players. Not the case with Harbaugh, who has successfully run an NFL team, quite successfully I might add. From 2011-2014, Jim Harbaugh compiled a 44-19 record with the SF 49ers. He did that with 2 QB’s who were not considered upper echelon talents in Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. For some reference, Alex Smith was 19-31 in 5 seasons as the Niners QB. With Harbaugh, his first season was 13-3. His 2nd season was cut short due to injury but the Niners were 6-2-1 with Smith. So 19-2-1 for one and a half seasons after 19-31 in 5 without Harbaugh. We all know who took over after Alex Smith went down, my former crush Colin Kaepernick. No problem for Harbaugh. Kaepernick after taking over the helm went 5-2 and took the Niners to the playoffs. A huge upset 1st RD victory over the Green Bay Packers, 45-31 started an improbable run. The Niners then defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 to earn a Super Bowl berth. The SF 49ers lost a thriller of a game, 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Still with me? My favorite MLB team the NY Mets made a very similar move recently. They decided to bring in a proven winner in Buck Showalter. Results have yet to be determined and if the bougy MLB Players Union doesn’t get it’s collective head out of its ass, we may not see a MLB season next year. The Mets have decided instead of hiring a young up and comer, they want to win NOW! Forget 3-5 years from now, NOW! They know Showalter knows exactly what he’s supposed to do in every and any situation, there’s nothing he hasn’t seen. The very same would go with Jim Harbaugh. I think it’s an extremely unique situation to be able to get a guy who is so in touch with the college game and all the players, yet has had tremendous NFL success as well. I say if Jim Harbaugh steps down as Michigan HC, Stephen Ross should fly one of his fucking planes as fast as they can fly and throw down some stacks of $$$$ to secure the best Head Coach for RIGHT NOW, the Dolphins can get. Personally, I think Harbaugh is a bit of a time bomb, and I have no idea how long he can last if he comes back to the NFL. My guess is it would be a similar gig to the Niners. He’d stay as long as they were winning. That’s not a terrible thing either. If for some reason he fails right off the bat, which I think is unlikely, he may try one more time. If he fails again I would think he’d step down and disappear and we’d probably want him to. I think if he does come back to the NFL, I think he’d be great for our team. Our defense would continue to flourish and he’d get Tua a run game if it killed him. Defense, running the ball, all the things we crave here. All that will make Tua better and more importantly, the Miami Dolphins better.

I’m open to other HC’s too, there are lots of ways to skin a cat. I actually don’t know how many ways there are and not sure why people think are so many ways to skin a cat, but there really are a lot of different avenues to explore in a Head Coach search. I’m sure Tom Garfinkel and Chris Grier are doing that as I type. Maybe it’s because I’m 58 now and my mortality is in the back of my mind. Who knows, maybe Mike McDaniel is the next Mike Tomlin. At 38 he’s a tad older than Tomlin was when he took over the Pittsburgh Steelers at the age of 35. To have continuity and longevity along with winning would be swell, but make no mistake about this my fellow Dolphins fans, the Miami Dolphins franchise is NOT the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. The Steelers are steeped in tradition and their owner doesn’t flip-flop on their decisions. Since 1969, The Steelers had HC Chuck Knoll 1969-1991, Bill Cowher 1991-2006, then Mike Tomlin from 2007 – present. Not only do they have consistency, but they WIN. So do I crave the same? I would wait until we clean house of our current GM before heading out on that path, which is another strong reason I prefer Harbaugh. With Harbaugh at the helm, it’s gonna be his way or the HAR-way. If Chris Grier didn’t like Brian Flores, he’s gonna hate Harbaugh, because this would be his show, guaranteed. He won’t allow Grier to undermine him and his cachet dictates that he deserves as much. Unfortunately, Harbaugh may have no intentions of leaving his current post, but if he does . . .

To elaborate on some great news we got yesterday, I’d like to share that I also got to speak to Jon “Stanger” yesterday, and considering what that man has been through, I was absolutely shocked as to how great he sounded. As I’m typing now I’m literally getting goosebumps and tearing up because he literally sounded just like the old Stanger, and that’s not being kind, or overenthusiastic or wishful, that boy is BACK! Now he needs to get his body back to where his head is and he’ll be in better shape at the next Fest than he was at the last. He’s currently just dealing with atrophy from being in a bed so long, and I believe he will respond very well to rehab, both occupational and physical therapy. I have to give both Jon and his wife a lot of credit, they really clawed back from some tough odds. Maybe our Dolphins can do the same!

Naples, I am really liking the mocks you are putting out and what position and where in the draft. That Faalele looks like a younger Trenton Brown of the Pats. Same size and everything. I would be on board with him as RT in the 1st and use that money saved not signing Brown on a FA WR.

I like that idea of Hunt and Faalele on the right side!

Another ILB I like as a possible 3rd is Chad Muma though I question his sideline to sideline speed.

If we are able to sign a good WR in FA, I think top of the 4th is a good spot for one where you are taking one. There will be a good number of prospects there along with the ones you have, Calvin Austin-Memphis, Romeo Doubs-Nevada, possibly Pickens-UGA, Ross-Clemson, etc. I don’t have my full list with me since I am at work. lol

As far as double down on RB in 5th, I like the guys you have, but also check out Chris Rodriguez-Kentucky and Allgeier-BYU. They are both big powerful RB’s. Rodriguez, last 2 seasons, 2164 yards at over 6ypc with 20 TD’s. Allgeier, last 2 seasons, 2736 yards at over 6ypc with 36 TD’s.

Lastly, I like Tanner Mordecai. He is a good QB who was stuck behind Murray and Hurts at Oklahoma so transferred to SMU and played very well. I was promoting him earlier in the college season. Also, check out QB Skylar Thompson-Kansas State as another option.

Heck, I almost feel like I can stop doing mocks and just hop on the Naples train.

    I did say almost. lol

Thanks … it’s our Charleston connection.
I do really like Chris Rodriguez RB out of Kentucky, but I couldn’t see him available to us at any spot we have, but if he is there and BPA, yes I think he’s the type we like.

For the WRs (and ILBs too actually) a lot depends on their 40 speed. The days of 4.6 WRs are long over and the same is true for 4.8 ILBs. Is Muma fast enough?

As for Justyn Ross specifically, that’s a Clemson guy, so I well remember him needing neck surgery and missing the whole 2020 season. Plus he was also hurt twice more and missed the last 3 games of 2021.
That’s a huge red flag, but otherwise, he’s a talented guy. Put up 20 TDs in 24 starts.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I did not realize that about Ross. He was not really on my radar like Pickens. Pickens is projected to run high 4.5’s. We don’t need another Parker.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I forgot about Tindall. I hate not having access to my draft shit while I’m at work.

Tindall is my #2 target at ILB after PSU ILB Brandon Smith but it is close. Tindall, with Baker at ILB would be very good. Smith is a freak athlete like Parsons though does not have it all put together like Parsons, but the potential is there.

This is what I have been talking about for the last 2 months. Omicron IS a blessing in disguise. Time to take off the masks and get you natural immunity.

Went to my doctor at the VA for my annual checkup. He got his 2 shots because the VA required it but refuses to get any boosters and does not wear a mask while seeing patients. He feels we will just be dealing with it as the common cold from now on. Said people will get seriously sick and die but no more than with the flu and possibly less. Said there will be more severe strains here and there over the rest of our lives but just like severe strains of flu that come and go from time to time.

Even the fearmongering media is starting to report this.

Belicheat will probably coach until he gets Shula’s record in a couple of years while also trying to have one last run at a SB, then he’ll retire. If he can accomplish both in the same year, I’d bet big money he retires on that high note.

EVERY head coach approved during the Ross regime HAS HAD A LOSING RECORD except for one INTERIM COACH—Todd Bowles was 2-1 and then asked ROSS if he could apply to be the head coach. Predictably, Ross told him “You didn’t make the cut, so don’t apply.” Bowles was the Defensive Coordinator of last season’s Super Bowl winning Tampa Bay Bucs. Which means he has one more Super Bowl ring than Steve Ross.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Bowles was 24-40 as jests head coach OD

He is kind of a typical DC who can never cross over to HC. His offenses were really bad with the jests. He won 10 games in his first year and then could not surpass 5 wins in the next 3 years

Last night when I got bounced off this system I told the story of a conversation I had with Howard Schnellenberger shortly after FAU rose to Division 1 in football. I asked him,”Coach, how long before the Dolphins have an FAU product on their regular season roster??” He replied, “Well,Randy, if they want to win another Super Bowl, they’d better have an FAU guy on the regular season roster —!”
    ————-
Well, here we are, almost 20 years later, and FAU STILL has never had a player on their regular season roster. Nor have they won, or even made it, to another Super Bowl. i was praying that Miami would acquire sackmaster Trey Hendrickson last off-season when he became a free agent. But, instead, he went to the Bengals and registered 14 sacks this season. And the Bengals are ONE WIN AWAY from playing for the AFC Championship next week.
    ————–
SOMEWHERE, Howard is smiling. (PS: Howard was the Dolphins offensive coordinator for the PERFECT SEASON!!).

    • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

That’s 3 of the 4 pro bowl centers I named and they are all close to 300 pounds

Creed Humphrey is 320, but I think that’s really big for the position

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I keep seeing Tyler Linderbaum listed top 10 too. It seems that draftniks think he’s that good.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Creed Humphrey had a great year as a rookie
So maybe the nfl isn’t being so tough on centers
But I think if he goes to[ 10, he’ll be the highest drafted center ever, won’t he?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t really know but Mike Pouncey went #15. Linderbaum might not go top 10 but I don’t think he’ll fall out of the teens.

  34. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I read a really in depth article the other day on the analytics of when to go for 1 and when 2, and it’s pretty crazy what analytics say. Usually if the first score is a TD and it’s in the 1st, that team should go for 2, That kind of stuff.

The article talked about how most coaches don’t follow the analytics because they’d get killed by the fans and ownership would not back them enough. It was a pretty interesting article.

Not that I necessarily subscribe to that way of thinking. I’ve always believed you shouldn’t chase points until it’s a necessary time in the game .

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

To me, one of the big problems with NFL 2 point analytics, is all the things I’ve seen is always based on leaguewide data.

So say, even if statistically speaking you have a 5% better chance to win if you go for 2 when scoring a the first TD in the 1st quarter, that is across the board. What do the numbers say if it’s a team that is bottom of the league in passing? or running? Or when you’re facing the best defense in the league, etc.

Perhaps individual teams do a more in depth look at those numbers, and a team like the Ravens then follows their own analytics, but how did that work out for them this year?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way I look at it is, what if this game goes to OT 6-6 or 9-9, if you kicked the high pct. XP you would have won and not gone to OT. Take the lead always. Especially the way the defenses are playing.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I hear ya, and agree. I simply don’t like chasing points. To me it seems you hurt yourself as often as not.

The whole idea of analytics though is based on like 20+ years of data, even though we may feel that way, the numbers say you have a +x% better chance to win going against that way of thinking. That is followed up by, even when it doesn’t work, it was still statistically the right idea.

    An intriguing game so far!

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you kicked the XP you’re down by 2 and can win it with a FG the way this game is going. You get the 2-pt conversion you’re down 9-8. Same thing. But you didn’t convert it and it’s a lower pct. play than the XP. Now you’re in a tie type game. That XP could hover over the Titans in the 2nd half.

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The Bengals remind me of the 3 Amigos with John Elway’s Broncos WRs in the mid-80s. Who was their RB, Sewell? That’s Joe Mixon. They have a nice Offense, but Burrow is going to get buried behind that O-Line of theirs.

  53. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If It was a defensive player, I don’t care what they think

Gesicki and Parker would both publicly supportive of Tua
I doubt waddle it upset with him either
    Nothing else really matters

If it was anyone on the OL, I must cut the, just for that….lol

    But it’s probably bullshit

  54. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

holy shyte, that was another great play!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think they can overturn that. I think it would stand whichever way it was called and since it was called INT…Titans ball…

  55. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

    That was impressive!

  56. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Looks like it hit the ground to me

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Yessss

  58. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think that is the right call. Simultaneously caught and touched ground

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, it’s 16-9 instead of 16-10. That XP is haunting the Titans. They’re in a tie type game.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Wow!!!!!

  61. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Holy crap nice throw

  62. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Good game

  63. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That was a heck of a throw

  64. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Wow what a throw

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Great game!

  66. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

So analytics doesn’t always pay. Because if they kicked the XP last time, they wouldn’t need to go for two now.

  67. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

People compare Treylon Burks to AJ Brown
I really think Burks would be very good for us

  68. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I know the whole analytics thing, but I don’t agree with it in two point conversions. It seems like it winds up biting teams more than it helps them.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I said basically the same thing earlier. I’m kind of playing devil’s advocate right now which doesn’t really align with my actual thoughts on it.

  69. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

My math was off- but my point was I think teams go for two too early.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They do. The Titans should be up 17-16 and a FG forces the Bengals to score a TD.

Really good playoff game and I expect the Packers/49ers to be the same.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If the Titans had made their xp early, then Cincy would have gone for 2 to go up 7 on their last TD, so the Titans wouldn’t have necessarily been up a point,

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Do they make it?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That’s why the analytics favored the Titans going for 2. If they make it, they then force the Bengals to go for 2 later on same as if they kick the xp. If they miss it, they are still in a tie game in the scenario that played out. They really don’t lose anything.

  70. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Cin wins and SF loses we get pick 25

  71. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I love Chase

But I wouldn’t call describing the key to a play making a defender miss insightful

  72. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Foreman is a FA after this season

  73. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is the point in games where the Titans start wearing teams down with their run game.

An anonymous Dolphins player said he is wasting his career in Miami with Tua as QB

When I read it this morning, thought of X, don’t see how anyone else says that

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I wish we ran the ball like that

  76. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If this guy goes 24 I will be pretty pissed about our draft pick

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tannehill has that winning look on his face, like he’s in the zone

  78. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That would have been the perfect time for a play action pass

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Burrow sacked for the 90th time, lol

  80. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tee Higgins = Justyn Ross

    AJ Brown = Treylan Burks

We can draft them both this year

  81. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    LMAO!
    Ref stops game
“just want to let everyone know the clock is correct”
    Ref starts game

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    91st

  83. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wow – I re,ember criticism the Bengals for not addressing the OL this off-season but this is crazy

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Burrow holds the ball too long

  85. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Cincy OL is also piss poor

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are you guys making it up as you go that X punked Tua?

  87. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Wow. This game is a roller coaster.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We know what this feels like.

  89. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I was about to say why did they let it go to 6 secs

  90. Ken's avatar Ken says:

That was a forced throw by Tannehill

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really thought he was going to miss it

They made it as hard as possible for him

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s pretty annoying watching the Bengals go to the AFC Championship game when they had the #1 pick 2 years ago, meanwhile we’re looking for a new HC.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow!!! Congrats Bengals with Zac Taylor as HC. 😉

  94. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You guys have to redo your mocks now

  95. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Same old Tanny… SMH

    Congrats to the Bengals

  96. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m heading to a buddies to watch the Niners game, so I won’t be on the blog for it. I’ll just say one more thing on the analytics debate then put it to rest since I’m arguing against my own belief, lol.

We can each come up with “well but what if this happened?” scenarios for both arguments. And we can each come up with a “well look at what just happened” result based argument. The whole point of analytics is it takes all those scenarios and says even though you THINK this gives you a better chance to win, the numbers actually say this gives you the better chance.

Any single scenario or any single outcome in this game or any other isn’t proof or validation of either point of view and doesn’t change what the data says.

And my own response to that argument would be the one I made earlier: Even though analytics data says such and such, it’s not specific enough to take into account specific team and player matchups. It’s broad based data and if you drilled down further, I’d bet you see numbers that say something different.

LOL, see, I don’t even need another person in order to have an argument 🤣🤣

  97. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Bengals are the new AFC team that will be around for awhile.

  98. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we saw in this game that fancy stats and shit like that doesn’t matter. The entire team has to bring it and regardless of talent on offense, defense is still a big part of winning. This game also showed us Phins fans that’s why the Titans beat up on us. We’re not ready for these two teams. That’s the goal in 2022.
