Recent signings add valuable depth to team

Neither player added makes the Dolphins a championship team, but hopefully the sum of what we had before this offseason, and what we’ve added during the offseason does add up to a championship team. At first, signing Sony Michel didn’t inspire me. After a couple of weeks, I realized that improving the depth on this team is important. It’s not a matter of is Sony Michel more talented than Mostert or Edmonds, it’s more a matter of we need guys who can carry the rock, and have done so in big situations. Michel fits that bill. Michel doesn’t need to be a superstar, he just needs to be able to step in and play if called upon. Bringing in LB Melvin Ingram fits that same bill. He won’t need to be the primary pass rusher, or edge setter. On the other hand, if we have a team in a bad situation, a 3rd and long, it will be great to have Ingram on the field, especially if it’s in a big spot in a big game, because he’s been there. One thing you can say about most of the guys who have been here is that when it’s been a big spot or big game, we’ve yet to step up and meet the challenge.

I give Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel a lot of credit for how they’ve transformed the roster, and just as importantly, the aura around this team and organization. There is a tremendous amount of positivity buzzing around this team that hasn’t been present in decades. I liked Brian Flores because he seemed like the tough minded guy you wanted to be your coach. One thing he lacked, and it seems severely lacked was vision of the big picture of what the whole team needed to be. Of course we haven’t played a game yet in the Mike McDaniel era, but the philosophy is out there, and it’s tangible. We don’t know exactly what we’re going to be, what our identity will be, but we have a pretty good idea, and I’d bet when the games start, we’ll see that just about all of us at FMU will see what we think we’ll see. Patience will possibly be necessary because implementing a system in today’s NFL isn’t that easy, with the limited amount of team practices, which has been drastically cut down from years past. Still, we’ve seen teams like the Rams with Sean McVay start quickly, and maybe that happens here too.

On 3rd and 1, 4th quarter and against the Bills, game tied with 3 minutes left, I don’t have a problem giving the ball to Sony Michel. He knows how to play the game and understands his responsibilities. He’s a young veteran RB coached by two great coaches too, Bill Belichick and Sean McVay. He’s been on winning teams and knows what it takes to win. I want that on our team, which frankly to this point, clearly doesn’t know what it takes to win. Melvin Ingram too. He will help our defense, he won’t lead our team in any statistical category, but his locker room presence, and presence of mind on the field will be invaluable. We have talent on this team, but these guys need players like this to show them. Sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake, because the Michel move didn’t impress me on the surface of it. Pair it with Ingram and the light finally came on for me. Sorry, not sorry, we’re all in, and these moves help us to stay in throughout the season. Lean on these guys in big situations and other guys will see what to do and be interchangeable with them as the season progresses. That’s what we need, we need our guys have all the talent in the world to learn what it take to win. We can’t step on the field against the Bills and get blown out every time and expect to win a playoff game later on after the season. I look forward to this season more than any season in quite some time. Hope you do too!

Mike you’re right .They’re my views too. Nice write up.

  2. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Michel brings some toughness to RB corp and Ingram is simply a very good player still at this stage of his career. The veteran leadership they bring is invaluable, somethime needed and lacking in spades last year. Couple them to Armstead etc. and this team has to be better.

  3. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike,

Good article as always. I have no clue if McD is as talented as people think but the positivity is a welcome change. Instead of undercutting the QB for half the season, he has all kinds of support and weapons. Good idea with you #5 QB pick.

We aren’t value picking or pushing everything towards the defense but making an actual potent offense (on paper). I’m also very excited but mainly to see what this coaching staff does with these young players. Can we be the team this year that goes from nothing to the playoffs? Can we finally win a playoff game?!! I hope so but even if not, this team seems better than the last 2 regimes at this point in the season. Let’s hope it transfers to games.

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good article Mike E. And yeah Michel and Ingram are the kind of signings that good teams make. Proven vets on short-term rentals. We may not be a Super Bowl competitor yet, but these guys sure want to act like we are. Makes me feel good about making the playoffs.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Well presented summary Mike E. I obviously share your enthusiasm.
I cut you some slack on the Sony thing because I think, with the sheer volume of additions to the roster, it’s easy to get numbed. But Sony Michel is a #1 draft pick with Super Bowl experience.
    … …
It’s also hard for me to hold in my mind all the new guys. I mean, I remember being thrilled to “steal away” Ced Wilson from the Cowboys, and now I barely remember what a nice fit he’ll be as WR3.
    … …
For me, the signing I have to keep reminding myself may actually be the biggest change for us, and one we won’t really appreciate until we start playing games, is the addition of a FB.
We did not even have one on our roster.
But Ingold is a highly rated player and will be very valuable to us.
Because McDaniel really really likes to use the FB in his game plan.

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Good oinking write up Mike E

I DO NOT think the Ingram singing is likely to fail for us. These sort of veteran pass rusher signings happen every year and it’s usually a competitive team
That just looking to add a rotational player. Every good team can’t get enough pass rushers. Are a good team? 🤷‍♂️

But we are gonna need an extra pass rusher if we are

The Michel singing is really interesting, we are only a few years removed from him being considered a prospect equal or almost equal to his college teammate Nick Chubb who’s tearing it up for the Browns

It’s tough to tell with RBs bc they often fade fast. And Michel is more of the speedy type who might not be able to do much but spell the RBs, but that might be enough

  9. randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

NICE ANALYSIS, MIKE. But not enough emphasis has been placed on Miami’s inability to plug the remaining holes in the offensive line. We are 1 or 2 injuries away from having one of the worst O-Lines in the NFL for the coming season. And I doubt that adding a couple of guys who get cut by other teams is going to change things all that much.
    —————–
Sure hope I’m totally WRONG on that one!!

MEANWHILE. does ANYONE REMEMBER that the Tampa Bay Lightning were UNDERDOGS to the Toronto Maple Leafs? – – OR does ANYBODY REMEMBER that the TBL also were underdogs to the FLORIDA PANTHERS before the puck drop for the first game of that series??? – – Well it’s all water under the bridge now because`the Bolts just took a 3-0 lead in their series against the Panthers with a convincing 5-1 victory today at Amalie Arena in downtown TAMPA. A Lightning win in tomorrow’s 4th game would advance Tampa Bay to the Eastern Conference Finals agains the winner of the Carolina Hurricanes-New York Rangers series that’s likely headed for 6 or 7 games.
The goal of a 3-PEAT is one step closer to reality!!

I do worry about an injury to Armstead. Besides X, that’s our most vulnerable spot.. Even Tua has a better backup.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Any team that loses a top player is gonna have issues and have to play through it. Very few teams have superior depth. But we do have some solid depth throughout the roster, just not at every position.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Depends who we’re playing, from weeks 5-12 any injury we get we’ll be fine, if we get one at the start or end it could be the difference in a W/L

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jaelan Phillips has said he wasn’t overly happy with his rookie season. Gotta like that because he actually had a nice rookie season. He’s hungry to play even better this year and this guy has a massive upside.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – Tough crowd sir. We did bring in 2 starters on the O-line. Like I’ve said many times, they’re not going to scrap the 2 young OL we drafted early in 2020 and 2021 (Jackson and Eichenberg). Teams don’t do that, they coach them up, and we have brought in a number of coaches who have O-line experience, as well as a new O-line coach. We already had Robert Hunt who I believe has pro bowl potential at RG.

    LT – check (Terron Armstead)
    LG – check (Connor Williams)
    C- ? Michael Deiter
    RG – check (Robert Hunt)
RT- ? (Winner of battle between Jackson, Eichenberg and possibly 2 others). Whoever wins that battle will be better than they were last year and hopefully good enough.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have no idea but I would not be surprised if Eichenberg is at LG with Williams at C, Jackson at RT and Deiter as a backup C/G.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think it’s going to be

      LT – armstead
      LG – Williams
      C – deiter
      Rg – hunt
      Rt – Eichenberg

Connor Williams is a huge asset bc he played LT in college at a high level and both guard positions at a high level for the cowboys. So if there is an injury he can be moved around. He is even listed as backup center on our depth chart

And we have Kindley & Jackson as depth

I’m sorry, but I think giving up on young OL is a disservice to the team and I love that we brought in 2 OL and JUST 2 OL….and very good 2 OL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Jackson will be the RT, but if they don’t like Deiter, (despite the fact that every other NFL team asked about Deiter this offseason), Tim might be right that Williams could be the C, and then Eichenberg would be the LG and Jackson at RT.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think we are not done yet on bringing in FA talent at OL

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Eichenberg playing LG between Armstead and Williams is not the same as playing between Jackson and Deiter or one of the other three centers. The same with Jackson at LG last year when he moved inside and Eichenberg moved to LT. There were no proven OL on the team last year other than Jesse Davis, and he’s not a top tier starter. It seems we all agree Hunt is the best young OL.

Dolphins: 17-0 in reg area season. Win the Super Bowl. Average margin of victory 42 points.

Bills: Josh Allen regresses and decides to retire by October. In appreciation of his efforts the people of a Buffalo name a sewage plant after him.

Patriots: Belicheat tries to teach young Mac Jones the way of the Sith, but young Mac turns on him and decides to play within the rules. Since he sucks, he throws 32 interceptions to 7 TDs. All 7 TDs are against the jests

Jets: By the 3rd week of the season die hard Jet fan Rick Astley circulates a memo titled: “You did it! You made me give you up!” Having no chance at fielding a competitive team, the highlight of the season is when Kyle Wilson finally shaves.

hey man, is it just me or have you been doing a lot of traveling in the last year or so?
not prying and no comment is necessary … just seems you’re having a lot of fun … which is great of course

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I wouldn’t say a lot of traveling

My first flight in 2 years was in March when I went to Seattle
But last year I took a lot of long weekend trips when it was warm. Stuff within driving distance and I’ll do that again this year

For instance this weekend I’m going to ashbury park for medial day but that’s only a 90 minute drive from me. I think I’m,entioned Canada a couple of days ago, but that won’t happen now now that I’m booked for ashbury park

Last couple of years I’ve mentioned a few other places like a lot of Long Island beaches, Rhode island, CT, NJ.

I went to GA near near jeckly island during covid too – but I drove

I was planning on going to DC to meet my brother before his Australian adventure but now we might have to out that on hold

So yeah I’m taking long weekends a lot of the time. I work for myself so I can afford to do that. In my industry you bill for a phone call and an email. So I can still make money on a Friday afternoon when I’m traveling

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, I know you’re down on our OL and some of the young guys, but like Mike said we’re not moving on from them at this time. We need to see them in the new system with new coaches in their 2nd and 3rd seasons. Not many young OL coming out of college are ready to go right away. This group needed a veteran presence and they added that with Armstead and Williams. If the coaching staff is not overly concerned about them, I won’t be either at least at this time. 😉

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But your lineup has them all out of position on top of the lack of talent

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody is out of position. Williams always worked at center in Dallas. Jackson has always said the side doesn’t matter, he’s played all over the line in his college career. Maybe Eichenberg is not a tackle. I don’t think all OL are defined by position or one side or the other. I’ve seen it mix and match many times over the years. I’m not saying Deiter can’t be the center, just wouldn’t be surprised if the starting 5 was not what we pencil in.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Just because someone has worked at another position doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be out of position. Williams is an OG. That is his best position. Playing OC is not his best position and it screws up the rest of the OL

    ———-
Nah, man. I’m about 1 hour west of Stroudsburg.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, Deiter locking down the center position and Williams at LG is the best case scenario, we just don’t know yet. I don’t care about the configuration, just play better. 🙂

The scheme on offense is going to be completely different. That’s a lock. A FB is going to be a part of it. More under center pro set type stuff. McDaniel is not going to reinvent anything. He’s going to run what he believes in. It’s the Mike Shanahan offense. Run the football, spread the field laterally with boots, waggles and motion/movement, and set up down the field passing plays.

Haven’t seen Dbolt here in some time. I just KNOW that he and I have come across one another back when I lived in Bloomsburg! He worked at the Denny’s there, and I used to go there all the time in my college days. What a small world!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Don’t get me wrong, Dbolt and I follow one another on Twitter and he’s all good. I just find it crazy that back in the 90s, we probably knew one another in some capacity before we reunited here as Phin fans.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Same is probably true of Prof Lou… we probably ran into one another once upon a time before reuniting as Phin fans here.

So here in PA, we have predominantly Eagles and Steelers* fans, obviously. We also have G-Men and stej fans, due to them being our next-door neighbors. However, there are so many Dolphins fans up here as well.

Only rationale I can come up with? Dan Marino went to the University of Pitt.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you were not a Dolphins fan but as an objective NFL fan, what would you think of our roster?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s a difficult task that you ask for us Phin fans, for REAL! LOL

As objective as I can possibly be to my Dolphins blood, the only concern I would have is the RT position. If that is remedied by coaching (and it CAN be done!), this Offense is going to be difficult to stop… minus a ‘power-back’. Tua is going to be that guy we saw at Alabama, now fully healed with the ability to chuck the rock 60 yards (all air) down the field.

Our Defense should be a top-5 unit in the league with its continuity and additions (see Melvin Ingram and Channing Tindall), coupled with the continued emergence of second-year players like Phillips and Holland. A fully healthy Raekwon Davis is set to emerge as well.

Don’t want to sound like a ‘homer’, but this roster — on paper — has all the makings of a team that can not only make the playoffs… but also go deep in the playoffs.

*knock on wood* Keep the injury bug away from us.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree! It’s not that hard to do. The offense for the most part has been totally revamped. The defense is growing as a unit.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Fins have a weenie arm QB, can’t run the ball, no OL, TEs that can’t block, WRs are always hurt, the D is mostly soft can’t stop the run
, kicker missed the most kicks in league last year, punter is too old, HC is a rookie, DC won’t be able to stand on his own 2 feet

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        LOL

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

That’s pretty close. We haven’t done shit in 20 years, last 4 HCs were dysfunctional, rookie HC, QB that hasn’t shown anything per the talking heads, bad OL, desperate to get speedy WR, defense has looked terrible against the Bills for several years.

Some good vets, smart coach, decent middle of the road team but not there yet. Need to see more before I’ll jump on board. That’s wha6t I’d say if I was an outsider.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

New Age, the potential of the Dolphins roster on paper just like the other AFC teams is just as good. Other than the Chiefs and okay put the Bills in there, nobody in the AFC has shown any consistency. I think we’re right there in 2022.

Also acting like Tyreek Hill leaving the Chiefs can be replaced easily and is no big loss is ridiculous. The guy has been a 6 time pro bowler and 3 time all-pro since he entered the league. He’s one of the best playmakers in the game and now that’s he’s in Miami people are trying to water him down.

Hill was great before Mahomes. Just saying. 😉

We have added some talent to a team which nearly made the play-offs a few times, but routinely folded under the first signs of pressure when it mattered, and has no “muscle-memory” of winning big games at all. This team will be led by a rookie HC, who has yet to prove he can walk the walk. Nowhere near ready to take the cheese here. If we can just get to that place when you are perennially in the post season, we are gonna win a super bowl

But for the last 20 years we have been perennially around .500 with a few horrible seasons sprinkled in, and then a “rebuild” and sometimes we make a run at being the 6th/7th wildcard team in every few years

Coach on the Melvin Ingram signing – In conjuction with the scouting department, Chris, myself, the scouting staff felt very excited to have the opportunity to add him to the team. Been in big games. Great guy for a young team can be very impressionable and a play maker to boot.

Coach says Jon Embree was the originator of the orange jersey idea. Players don’t give critique and feedback on the play list because the argument is … if you have a gripe, become the practice player of the day.

Coach talking about QB evaluation is must listen. Will share later, but it’s an in-depth look at some the variables that go into it.

McD gives a great explanation of the value of the FB, a position he’s seen in his O’s since Day 1 of install on his first job in 2005

1 advantage of a FB is that you have a backfield player that can give you different #’s on each side of the C depending on the direction he goes.

Asked abotu Tua, Coach said the word that comes to mind is instictiveness. How Tua thinks about the game of football through the lens of the QB position, it’s hard to describe, but Coach McDaniel says he now has a better feel for what people said about Tua and that instictivenes

This touches somewhat on what I was talking about earlier with the internet and social media. My original post on the subject was more in response to MF13s comments on the current state of our society, not necessarily a comment singularly on school shootings.

I think school shootings have become mass shootings because of the internet, etc. People have a blueprint, more incentive, and a host of other reasons. But I agree with you in that some people are wired wrong, and regardless of influence, it takes a person being wired wrong to do what that kid did today (I know he’s 18 and technically an adult).

I personally believe our society is going through a major shift because of technology. It’s inevitable and required. The fact is, kids growing up today have a completely different experience than they did when we grew up. The way we interact, the things we can do, the resources available, the list goes on and on. Our society needs to, and will, adapt, but it’s a process, and not necessarily a fun or comfortable one.

Who knows how long it will take, but I think we’ll be seeing a new ‘normal’ every few years or so for the foreseeable future.

To touch directly on what you say in your post, if I were raising young kids in today’s world, my wife and I would have a long conversation about it and we’d likely agree to do something similar to what my youngest did for high school for the entire educational period, at the very least. She learned remotely 3 days a week and went to school 2 days a week her Jr and Sr years.
