How good will Jaelan Phillips be?

If you’re a Dolphins fan, and you watched every game last season, it’s easy to forget how sparingly Jaelan Phillips played the first half, and how much he came on in the 2nd half of the season with that additional playing time. For comparison, in totality, Jaelan Phillips played 54% of snaps on defense. AVG (Andrew Van Ginkel) played 71% of the defensive snaps. DE Emmanuel Ogbah played 67% defensive snaps. Now that we’ve seen what Phillips is capable of, his time on the field will greatly increase, probably exceeding 75% of the defensive snaps. If not at age 23, when?

Once again, for comparison, Pro Bowl LB Micah Parsons who was beloved from many here on FMU played 84% of the defensive snaps last season. You’d have to think Phillips approaches that this season. With more playing time, more plays will happen, and Jaelan Phillips, and hopefully the Miami Dolphins defense will get an increase in production in their pass rush and rushing defense. Phillips was tied for 2nd on the team with 9 tackles for loss, and 3rd in QB hits with 16. He was 2nd on the team in sacks with 8.5, just a half sack away from being tied with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. Phillips showed the ability to play the run as well as rush the passer. He’s a very athletic, guy with a nice repertoire of pass rushing moves that he will keep refining. He definitely learned a lot last year, you could see the difference by the end of the season he was so much more effective.

This season, I don’t think it’s crazy to expect 12-15 sacks from Phillips if he plays all season and gets at least 75% snaps on defense. He’ll probably have more than 20 QB hits, and I’d expect close to 80 tackles. You want your best players on the field as much as possible, and I feel Phillips will be, already is one of our best. We did pick up Melvin Ingram who will share some snaps with Phillps, but Ingram is 33, and will have to be used strategically to keep him effective, and healthy. Although this only year 2 for Phillips, he came to the team with a good toolbox of pass rush moves, he has prototypical size and length at 6’5 266 and wide wingspan, crucial to getting to the QB. He’s certainly one guy to watch on this aggressive Dolphins defense. He should be among the leaders in a few defensive statistical categories this season, I can’t wait to see this kid shine!

Watching it had to be said, Tua’s hands (10″) look smaller than Tyreek’s (8″), Reek has longer fingers, but…

The way the NFL measures the hands of players is by taking a tape measure from the tip of the thumb to the pinky finger with the hand outstretched.

Kind of like the 40, it’s not the end all or even totally accurate

Tua has wide hands, which helps him with grip, Reek has long fingers which helps catching passes

They should measure hands as length and width

    Is it football season yet?

    • steveccnv says:

No, not quite, we still have some time to reflect on the last year

On 4th of July 2021 Psaki was bragging about the cost of a bbq going down 16 cents from the previous year, even though gas was up a dollar, jump forward to 2022 4th of July and it costs 17% more for that bbq

      • stangerx says:

I like Jen Psaki. She’s feisty and smart. Reminds me of Kellyanne Conway, who I also like.

      • bailbondmike says:

Stanger, I would include Kayleigh McEnany in that group. They were all good at what they were paid to do. I have to give the edge to Psaki as she had to lie/twist the true more for the cause and deflect multiple times on a daily basis much more than the other two.

Those qualities set Psaki up with the perfect resume for MSNBC.

      • stangerx says:

My girl Kellyanne came up with the phrase “alternative facts”…. don’t count her out. Kayleigh sure was the nicest to look at though, even if she had “crazy eyes.”

      • Ken says:

β€œAlternative Facts” was the height of hypocrisy. It was Orwellian. I lost any respect for Kelly Anne Conway I might have had. I do like her husband a lot

  18. bailbondmike says:

They should measure hands as length and width

Which is more important, length or girth?

  19. stangerx says:

β€œThe Dolphins seemingly made all the right moves during their rebuild, trading away veterans and acquiring more future draft capital while looking ahead to tomorrow. Grier’s process was sound, but he hasn’t been able to hit his draft selections. Miami’s decision to take Tua Tagovailoa over Justin Herbert looks like an all-time mistake. The team also whiffed on its other two 2020 first-rounders (Austin Jackson and Noah Igbinoghene).

Thankfully, the early returns on Grier’s 2021 draft class, which included Jaylen Waddle, Jaelan Phillips, and Jevon Holland, are incredibly strong. With Tyreek Hill now in Miami, this is a make-or-break year for Tua β€” and it could be for Grier as well.”

    — PFN’s Dallas Robinson on ranking the Dolphins’ front office 20th in the league.

    • bailbondmike says:

I think that is a little unfair on the Tua selection and not make or break on him for, at least, the first half of the season. I agree on Jackson and Iggy. I would still rank them a few spots higher, though. Middle of the road and possibly on the rise.

    • Tim Knight says:

      It never ends.

Hey, Bro. I’m 10 minutes in and I already know this. I’ll watch the rest of it, but the history of this goes back to ancient Egypt and even further back.

The sooner we end the Federal Reserve (see Andrew Jackson), the better off we’ll be. That was one of President Trump’s highest goals… to end the Federal Reserve because they are CROOKS. 1% of the world’s population controlling 99% of the world’s money?

Paper money necessarily needs to be backed by SOMETHING of intrinsic value, right? Instead, Obama/Biden have/are spending us into oblivion. Dem cheerleaders don’t seem to care when they SHOULD care!

China’s bought up so much of our debt that they own more in America than one could possibly imagine. Just wait for America to come out with SCS (Social Credit Scores).

Thank you for posting the video, man! Not everybody here seems to understand what’s really been going on.

This was one man’s study about it starting at a certain point in time. It’s a lesson that history repeats itself just with different nations on top and why the previous powers fell. It’s a lesson on humans and how we’re wired. Nothing that is happening now is unprecedented.

      • mf13ss says:

Agreed, and I’ve seen many other people talking about this in recent years. You should learn why US mint coins either have jagged edges (the 360-degree edge) or reinforced borders.

    • mf13ss says:

Yes, it does have to do with Mike McDaniel being a first-time HC.

      • Tim Knight says:

We currently have 17 rookies on the team. It gives coach McD and his staff a chance to see who is ready for NFL competition during a week. We could see some moves made a few days later.

When we released QB Chris Streveler I think that was because they liked Skylar Thompson’s arm talent and skills better. They know Bridgewater can win games in this league and they feel Tua has a nice upside.

I expect 3-5 rookies to be replaced after that first week of rookie TC with players who have some NFL experience or other rookies we had our sights on that are available. Part of that numbers game.

Skylar Thompson is going to get a lot of work before the vets show up. All three of our QBs have some mobility talent. They don’t have to be big time runners but they have to be able to move, bootleg, waggle and make a run here and there.

    • bailbondmike says:

Thompson seems to have a good pocket presence and footwork already. I am sure there are things to work on with him but not as much as others we could have drafted or signed as an UDFA.

Phelon, I like Skeeter boats a lot. Even though a bay boat, I can easily take it offshore in the gulf with no issues but still has a shallow draft for inshore. I want a boat for inshore/offshore and, of course, one I can use for scalloping. Delima is wife wants a pontoon that we can have a custom canvas camper enclosure made so we can camp on the islands around here. I am good with it as I enjoy that but would lose the offshore element unless I get a tri-toon with oversized toons.

I don’t want a boat payment, so I am looking at used for 60K or less.

I am going to look at a Skeeter this week here in Pensacola. It’s a 2018 SX2250 with a Yamaha 200, 215 hours. Aluminum tandem trailer. Has everything I want on it, Lowrance Hook 7, Minn Kota I-Pilot with spot lock/auto deploy & digital charger and a 10′ powerpole. Does not have a swim ladder that I would need for scalloping but that is an easy fix. I need, at least, a 3 step for my old ass. Stored inside. Listed at 59,900.

Problem is the wife found a 2015 26′ Godfrey Marine Aqua Patio SLR Tri-toon with oversized 27″ toons in FT. Walton Beach. Comes with a custom aluminum tandem trailer. Yamaha 200 4 stroke E/shift with only 121 hours. Has a 3′ extended swim platform with dual 10′ powerpoles and a curved, 5 step easy entry swim ladder. Set up with 3 batteries. Factory installed Lowrance but not sure of model yet. Also has dual Bimini tops so I would not have to install another one for a canvas camper enclosure. Stored inside but also has custom cover. Upholstery is immaculate. Listed at 59,500.

    —————
I think anything that has “world order” in it is bad news. The world leaders at that time (and always had) were backed by the 1%.

During these past 75 years, there have been major wars (not world wars), waged under capitalism vs communism/socialism, along with a lack of economic independence (see oil)… many of them being proxy wars. The world at large has NOT enjoyed unprecedented peace and prosperity.

I don’t think what came about after WW2 has been as described above (I recognize you quoted someone else, Stanger, not your words). WW3 is well underway, we just need an international incident (see Archduke Ferdinand’s assassination) to have it metastasize into a tangible event involving soldiers, bombs, and the like.

Lo and behold, what’s going on in Ukraine just might be the catalyst to make WW3 happen. 😦

    • stangerx says:

Maybe WW3 starts an hour from now, can’t say it won’t. But think the post-WW2 years have been very, very good to our country. Yet wasn’t saying have been perfect either. And the “Again” in MAGA is about brining us back to part of them.

It tells you they have no intention of fixing gas prices

  38. steveccnv says:

” High gas prices worth it for β€˜future of liberal world order,’ White House economics adviser tells CNN”

What he’s doing is fear mongering, forget the phrase liberal world order and just replace it with 70 years of world peace (as in no world wars)

What he’s saying is we need to sacrifice a little to keep the world from WW3

Basically forget everything this administration has done wrong, we need to look at the big picture

  39. steveccnv says:

People are struggling, they don’t want to hear about world peace, they want to know what the govt is going to do to help them now

So a very elitist, or unsympathetic way of looking at the current situation

It would be like telling a guy dangling from a cliff, not to smoke it’s bad for your health

    • Ken says:

If you don’t want to see struggles then best to have world peace. Fastest way to raise fuel prices is to get into a war especially with an energy producing country

      • steveccnv says:

      • Ken says:

But I am also not running crying wolf right now either. Prices have risen and the supply chain has issues. Despite that people are working. The price of gas is still cheaper than most countries and this country is better situated to ride out the economic uncertainty that just about every country is facing right now. The sky is not falling

      • stangerx says:

Ken — what gets me when I visit Europe is how they pay as much for a liter of gas as we do for a gallon. Might explain why they use mass transport more.

      • steveccnv says:

Prices have risen, because of the WH’s war on fossil fuels and their weak foreign policy

Why should we have to pay for their unthoughtout and bad policies?

  40. Tim Knight says:

So now the new narrative is Bridgewater will replace Tua this season ending his career in Miami. This sort of thing has reached ludicrous speed.

  41. stangerx says:

This one is a Tim special. You think you are scared of Great White Sharks? Well they are scared of Orcas. Not sure if Blue Whales (the largest mamal on the planet) get scared, but they are Orca prey as well. Think we found our Alpha Marine Predator.
    ————————————-
A pair of orcas has been terrorizing great white sharks off South Africa’s coast since 2017, causing them to flee en masse. The wounds are distinctively made by the same pair of killer whales, according to the study.

The attacks have triggered the sharks’ “flight” instinct, causing a mass migration away from the marine predators.

Insider previously reported the first evidence on a pod of orcas hunting and killing adult blue whales. Marine scientists from Cetrec WA (Cetacean Research) were able to detail how orcas swam inside the mouth of blue whales to eat their tongues. Researchers saw large chunks of skin and blubber having been gouged from the body of a blue whale and most of the dorsal fin having been bitten off

    • Tim Knight says:

Well Orcas are huge mammals and Great Whites are huge fish but mammals are smarter so they have a huge advantage. Orcas also work together like you said and Great Whites don’t. Orcas have that other name “Killer Whales” because they can kill anything in the sea.

I don’t think adult Orcas have any predators other than humans. Orcas are not known for attacking humans but Great Whites and other sharks are. So that’s why as a human we should fear sharks more.

      • stangerx says:

The Great Whites are at least smart enough to know when they might be an Orca meal to get the hell out of there.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah a lot of species know what their dangers are. All about survival. You don’t exist for millions of years being totally stupid. LOL

Not sure if y’all have heard this on the news. This happened exactly where we went scalloping only 4 days after we left Keaton Beach. I mean exactly! You can follow our chart plotter to the spots we had marked off Grassy Island for scallops and it would take you exactly (within 100-200 yards) to where she got attacked. It’s a grassy plateau about 5′ deep (in center of plateau) and covers about a quarter mile wide by about 2 miles out in the gulf from Grassy Island between 2 old creek channels that run about 10′ deep depending on the tide. That has been the scallop hot spot the last 3 years.

I wear a dive knife on my leg (not that it would help) but also carry a 4′ spear. Only thing is you are swimming and looking down, not swimming and looking around.

Does anyone think Gaskin fits the new system? Would be great to have as a back up but I’m thinking not. He’s more a run straight ahead and find a little cut to the left or right guy.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think he can do it. We’ve only seen him in what we’ve run the last 3 years and that wasn’t a very good system(s).

      • stangerx says:

He’s a 4.6 guy. You’ve seen who they brought in. Michel is the same speed but he is bigger.

      • Tim Knight says:

It’s not about 40 times, Gaskin plays very physical for a guy his size and he’s got some shifty to him. He’s been productive. He’s also a solid receiver.

  47. stangerx says:

Ken — even you can be a conspiracy theorist, well that or a prankster. πŸ™‚
    —————————–
The story explains that a professional fisherman named Arnold Pointer from Southern Australia saved the life of a β€œbig female white shark” after it was caught in his fishing net and named it Cindy. Pointer explains that now he has a problem: the almost 17-foot shark has not left him alone in two years, following him wherever he goes and scaring away the fish Pointer is trying to catch.

In the story, Pointer says: β€œOnce I stop the boat she comes to me, she turns on her back and let me pet her belly and neck, she grunts, turn her eyes, and move her fins up and down hitting the water happily.”

According to the blog site Our Planet , the story was part of an April Fool’s Joke in the April 2006 edition of Le Magazine des Voyages de Peche, a French fishing magazine The story has been debunked by various fact checkers including Snopes and Truth or Fiction.

    • Ken says:

Didn’t bother to fact check it. Just saw it on FB

    • Tim Knight says:

I’m not surprised. I didn’t think a Great White would do that. But Tiger Sharks have been receptive to human touching putting them in a catatonic state. That’s another scary shark to deal with if it’s coming after you.

  48. mf13ss says:

Speaking of nature, I tangled with a close to 4′ black snake today in the yard. My nephew was playing pool-side with a soccer ball when he came upon it. He yelled, “Uncle M13!!!”, and I came across the non-poisonous intruder.

FAST MFer. I pinned it down with a pool scrubber (the closest thing at hand), but it eventually slithered out of it and into the pool house’s outer bricks before I could ‘Steve Irwin’ it out back to the wild.

I don’t believe in killing wildlife, and if I got my hands on it I would have returned it to a safer distance to thrive in the wild.

I love it when y’all post wildlife stories, especially SHARKS!

    Tua:
    1. Three years removed from the college hip injury. Almost career ending.

    2. Has dealt with a lot of nonsense for two years in the NFL. His ribs and finger injuries last year is part of the game. It happened.

    3. Now he has a team that believes in him from top to bottom despite the continuing nonsense from the outside. Addressing the offense became priority this year.

We all know this is a big year for Tua, it is for all 3rd year QBs and players that were drafted in the 1st round or higher. Let us see where he’s at instead of predicting it.

    • steveccnv says:

Tua just has to be Tua, and he’ll be fine

Drives me crazy to watch the simulated games, where they have him throwing lots of ints and inaccurate passes

He’s going to light it up this year just because of the guys around him

Brady and Allen took a leap after they got their feet under them and the game slowed down, Tua has the talent to take the same leap

A lot.of prices rose because of Trump’s tarriffs on cheap labor stuff from China.

    • steveccnv says:

Is that where you want to go?

    • stangerx says:

I’m a big free trade guy — so correct. But that was already baked in. The new inflation is cause of something else. Increased shipping costs, rise in oil prices and throwing a bunch money on an already good economy are three of my favorites there.

But I’m guessing should cool down. Covid support money ending or ended and Fed is hiking interest rates. Let’s hope the Fed hits the sweetspot btwn cooling things down and pushing them off a cliff.

  58. Tim Knight says:

And on this day of course there was a shooting in Chicago at a 4th of July parade. 6 dead and 24 wounded. SMH.

  59. bailbondmike says:

Sorry Stanger. Thought you were saying they should have submitted to the Russians. My bust,

    • stangerx says:

De Nada. I was just surprised that the Russian speaking Ukrainians stood up just as hard as the ones to the West. And they are the ones bearing the brunt of the fighting now.

  60. Tim Knight says:

Okay the shooting wasn’t in Chicago but a suburb north of the city. Not that it matters. It’s still horrible.

    • stangerx says:

Highland Park is an affluent Chicago suburb. The one thing you can be sure of is the sniper wasn’t part of some gang war.

      • Tim Knight says:

I don’t care who this fuckface is. But targeting an affluent area could be the motive. I don’t know that it is, but it is possible. Nothing surprises me anymore. This country is going through a very sad public war with each other. Violence is a part of that.

  61. stangerx says:

β€œI would say money is not everything to me personally. I like people, the character they show. Money, it only gets you so far in life. The person, being the genuine person, the love you have for people, that’s what I care about. Money, it’s going to come. It’s just really how you treat people. The deal is done with the Dolphins. It was mostly about respect. I’m happy with where I’m at right now and just focus on stuff and keep going.”

    — Xavian Howard, who sure did seem to care about money to me.

    • Tim Knight says:

He did say money is not everything to me personally. He said it was about respect and I agree with him. He’s one of the top corners in the league and the top ballhawk the last 5 seasons. He deserves to be treated as such.

      • stangerx says:

But his definition of respect was money. FInd it hard to argue he was not looking for more even though money doesn’t matter that much to him. Just see that as a convenient out.

      • Tim Knight says:

That’s the way the league is setup, if you play at an elite level you get paid elite money. I have no problem with great players being paid top dollar. I consider X an elite player.

      • stangerx says:

I just had a problem with him saying the money didn’t matter to him. He demanded a trade and more money with 3 years left on a contract that made him one of the highest paid CBs in the leage.

      • Tim Knight says:

He said; β€œI would say money is not everything to me personally.” The key phrase “not everything”. Agents drive this stuff. We all see this game being played out every year.

  62. stangerx says:

Yeah, been following it. It’s crazy because in the last 7 years I have been going there, I have yet to see a shark while swimming or from the boat.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Too bad you weren’t there with that knife

    • Tim Knight says:

I still say it was a big bull shark. 9 foot is a big one and they’re usually 6-7 foot but can reach 12 foot. They are the most aggressive shark and can adapt to shallow waters both brackish and fresh waters. They are the most dangerous sharks to humans.

    • Krishna says:

I wonder if the shark community knows there’s food there now….yikes

  74. Tim Knight says:

Steve, do you believe people/citizens of the USA own themselves?

  75. bailbondmike says:

Tim, I think you are right. There are lots of Bull sharks all along the gulf coast. As the waters get warmer around middle July they tend to move out a little farther. I can’t think of any other shark that would come that shallow and be that large and aggressive.

I may have to convince my scallop buddies to move the date to the weekend after the 4th of July instead of the weekend after Father’s Day.

  76. Wyoming85 says:

    ok

  77. steveccnv says:

They’re predicting Tua’s for this season, based on 15 games

    https://phinphanatic.com/2022/07/05/predicting-miami-dolphins-tua-tagovailoa-final-stat-line-for-2022/

In the grand scheme of things, don’t think it really matters if he plays 15 or 17, but it will for the naysayers, so if he plays both or at least the first Buffalo game we should be good

  78. Wyoming85 says:

    WTF

  79. stangerx says:

Came out a few hours ago that the Highland Park shooter dressed up as a woman to blend in with the crowd after the deed was done. Sounds like he was one who was at least trying to get away with it.

    • Tim Knight says:

Even with those tattoos on his face? I guess he shaved too so the picture we’re seeing was not recent. Sick bastard!

  80. stangerx says:

Lauren Boebert was quick to jump on a mass shooting in Denmark same day as Highland Park. What she declines to mention is that it was Denmark’s first mass shooting in 7 years. How many have we had this year?

  81. Tim Knight says:

The problem I have with comparing other nations with the USA is they are of the same culture, they’re not melting pots and they don’t have the same civil rights issues that we have because of that. Our country is massive with so much diversity which in theory is a wonderful thing. But there is a lot of turmoil because of cultural conflicts which is a human thing that’s been going on forever. For a lot of us we get along just fine, but there are plenty of people who do not like each other based on race and culture and it’s not just white and black people. One example is I know people who are Ecuadorian and they can’t stand Dominicans and vise versa. Not sure what the beef is but I’ve heard this multiple times for decades.

Most of these shooters are unhinged males 18-22 range and there are usually signs that they’re headed towards doing something horrific but nobody speaks up. Friends and family members usually only talk about it after it happens. It’s a lot deeper than just discussing the guns being used.

    • Ken says:

Most of Europe has large immigrant populations nowadays

      • Tim Knight says:

Nowhere near what we have and this country has been a continuing melting pot since the beginning hundreds of years ago. A lot of the European nations started to have more immigrant populations since WWII. They also have stricter immigration laws than us. The USA is different than other nations. The melting pot and all the divisive issues is not easy. Now there are people trying to make it worse or portraying it as it’s worse than it’s ever been when it was actually improving quite a bit.

There is an agenda and I think it’s fucked up. Kids minds are being fucked with by so many things that some of them are losing it. That’s where the problem lies and we keep ignoring it. These shooters have a lot in common and the narrative is focused on guns. Wrong way to approach it.

      • bailbondmike says:

Plus, we basically have no border protection.

  82. pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – Does that number include suicides and criminal on criminal (Gangs) shootings?

    • stangerx says:

I don’t know, but would suspect so. Clearly the numbers were not just mass shootings if that was where you were going.

      • pheloniusphish says:

Yes, they like to use those numbers because it skews the stats. But they represent three different problem sets.

  83. bailbondmike says:

Wasn’t going to mention anything until more facts were released but it looks like this shooter is a Left-Wing whack job.

He posted recent twitter pics of himself next to Trump banners, wearing a Trump flag, etc. to make it look like he is a big Trump supporter.

After further investigation it was shown that he does not follow anyone on the right or even close. Some he follows: President Biden, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, The New York Times, CNN, The New York Post, The Associated Press, The Washington Post, CDC, World Health Organization, FBI, and other hardcore left leaning people/sites. In addition, many hardcore gaming sites.

He has never posted a like or a love on anything or anyone on the right. Though he has posted a shit ton of likes and loves on the President Biden twitter page and many others on the left he follows.

Speculative, but he knew and hoped people would go to his social media and look at his twitter posts/pics and jump to the conclusion he was Trump supporting nut case.

He just wasn’t smart enough to realize people would look at who he really follows on twitter.

    Could be nothing, but……..

  84. bailbondmike says:

Video games. Some of these games make it cool to kill. IMO

    • Tim Knight says:

Having the same conversation with a group of friends. Violent video games and movies are desensitizing kids and adults about murder. Hollywood that is always at the forefront of gun control glorifies guns and killing people in movies. Talk about hypocrisy.
