Preseason Game 1 – Dolphins at Buccaneers

Wow! How long has it been since I’ve posted an image of Dolphins vs any other NFL team? One day you’re sweating in your car in New Jersey with the A/C blasting because it’s nearly 100 degrees outside (most likely 130-140 degrees in the car), and the next, the Dolphins are playing their first preseason game. Unbelievable! If you’re like me, and know most of you are (at least in this regard), you can’t wait to see this team suited up and playing football again. You want to see the dynamic between Tua and Hill, you want to see if the offensive line is for real, after all the personnel changes and position changes. You want to see this defense performing like they’ve been together for a while (they have!). So what are some of the things I’m interested in seeing besides the obvious ones I’ve already outlined? I’ll tell you.

I know WR’s Cedrick Wilson and Preston Williams have been stuffed down the depth chart, and some fans have already written them off. I’d love to see a healthy dose of both of those guys. WR’s 6’5 225 who can run, and make contested catches don’t get discarded unless they have personal issues, injury issues, or both. Williams has had both, but his salary of $1.3M is totally palatable if he’s got his head on straight and he’s healthy. We brought in Cedrick Wilson from the Cowboys because he had a great season with the Cowboys playing the greater majority of snaps in the slot. Keep in mind that last year, we had our TE Mike Gesicki in the slot often but in McD’s offense, that likely won’t be the case, so Wilson Jr. has a good shot of seeing lots of playing time. He’s a veteran who knows how to run routes, find soft spots and make plays. I hope “EZ” Erik Ezukanma is as great as fans hope he is, but until the lights are on, don’t put him ahead of Wilson Jr. just yet.

The depth at DL will be tested somewhat with the release of DE Adam Butler, who did not pass his physical. Porter Gustin (formerly of the Browns), and Owen Carney Jr. a rookie out of Illinois are the backups behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who will probably be quite limited in his snaps for obvious reasons, so we’ll get a look at if what we have is sufficient, or if we need to address this with another FA pickup. In the offensive trenches, we’ll probably see a couple of plays (if that) of our starting O-line, which is LT Terron Armstead, LG Liam Eichenberg, C Connor Williams, RG Robert Hunt and RT Austin Jackson. Besides the surprise of Connor Williams at center, this how I expected our O-line to be from the get-go.

I don’t think preseason game 1 will reveal all that much, but I’m still interested to see which RB starts, who gets the most action and in what situations. Which back gets the short yardage carries, which back is in on 3rd down etc. To me, the most important thing is staying injury free. If you have bad game, fix it and do better next game, just don’t get hurt. I would like to see Noah Igbinoghene show something positive, anything really. Just give me a pass break up, an INT, a strong tackle or forced fumble, give me something. We all hope the new O-line doesn’t resemble last year’s line at all. I’m curious to see Teddy B and Skylar Thompson, who should both get lots of playing time. Oh yeah, I want to see our offense with a FULLBACK!!! I want to see Hunter Long make a bit of a splash, show us a lil sumpin’. Will Durham Smythe be the next top 10 balanced TE in the NFL? How will our ST’s look with so many big departures and new additions? Will Mostert be an electric returner and will Hill get some action back there too? Lots to see tomorrow at 7:30PM if you can watch it live, or Sunday, 8/14 at 7AM Eastern time on NFLN. Enjoy the game! Football is BACK baby!!!

To reiterate what BBMike stated, Larnel Coleman, IMO, needs to develop a LOT. As is, he’s not a legit NFL backup LT.

    First half (to echo BBMike)

    Positive: Skylar!

Meh: both sides of the ball in general. I was looking at Michael Deiter closely: meh, despite his foot. I was looking at Iggy closely: meh/negative, just wish I had the All-22 to see what had happened on his assignment on the TD pass.

Negative: our O-Line (albeit without our STUDS) sucks. I can’t judge our RBs when our O-Line sucks that badly.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He was probably our best defensive player in the 2nd half. He was always around the play. You could tell by his reaction, he knew it was bad right away. Fingers crossed it’s not season ending…

    Ouch

  84. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    Ok Ok

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was one of the best 1st PS games where both teams got a good look at their 2nd and 3rd string players with one backup QB getting a start to finish look. Lots of tape on those players for coaches to evaluate.

I’m concerned about Trill Williams on that play where he blew up the play. It looked liked he had an awkward finish.

  86. randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

VERY,VERY ENTERTAINING, especially for a preseason game. My most lasting impression from this contest will be Kyle Trask possibly cementing his status as the successor to Tom Brady in Tampa Bay!! Trask was REALLY GOOD!!

But give credit to a scrappy Dolphins team that somehow doinked their way to victory in a game I thought they were going to lose. It was a gutty performance!

Meanwhile, the offensive line was just as bad as I feared they were. We are STILL 2-3 players short on the O-Line. And the running backs had NO CHANCE to show what they had because the blocking JUST WASN’T THERE!! Buffalo’s D-Line would have destroyed Miami’s O-Line and running backs tonight!! And Tua would NOT have had enough time to throw many long range bombs behind this porous O-Line. THAT was the most depressing reality.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember we had 2 days of joint practices with the Bucs. I’m sure both teams decided on the same thing. It was a let’s take a look at our depth game. Entertaining game for a 1st PS game.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kyle Trask was a 2nd rd pick in 2021 playing in his 2nd season against 7th round rookie Skyler Thompson in his 1st PS game. From a management standpoint I thought Thompson was solid. Trask is the Bucs backup QB, Thompson is trying to beat out Bridgewater.

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We didn’t try to run very much. It looks like the plan was to get a good look at Thompson and this group of WR’s.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Good night y’all. Will look for the news feeds in the morning to see what the talking heads have to say.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

#’s that stood out to me on defense were – 22, 32, 33, 41 and 53. On offense it was a mixed bag. I saw those other numbers all night.

Grammar wise-commas are a law unto themselves. Basic rule, is to use one when reading aloud, one inserts a comma when pausing. A semi colon is used after a string of commas. A colon when denoting a list of things. Ellipses are used when joining 2 sentences or a sentence and quote. A long dash is used when a long pause is required. Oxford commas were fashionable and still used by some editors, but are now out of fashion, due to the cost of printing a book.
Grammar sucks almost as much as the use of commas do. In other words guess like I do.

  93. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Damn…I was a bit late on the comma debate. Oh well!

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow, Todd Bowles has been eating well since he’s been in TB. He looked more like a DT than a DB.

  95. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Saw Iggy get burnt on a simple crossing pattern, didn’t even show any recovery speed once the receiver caught the ball.

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Iggy also in coverage on the Bucs first TD.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That was like total unawareness on his part. He was in zone but dropped all the way back into the EZ. He saw the WR but still gave him a 10+ yard cushion and didn’t react to the WR until the ball was thrown. That is why I said I feel his instincts are lacking.
