Preseason Game 1 – Dolphins at Buccaneers

Wow! How long has it been since I’ve posted an image of Dolphins vs any other NFL team? One day you’re sweating in your car in New Jersey with the A/C blasting because it’s nearly 100 degrees outside (most likely 130-140 degrees in the car), and the next, the Dolphins are playing their first preseason game. Unbelievable! If you’re like me, and know most of you are (at least in this regard), you can’t wait to see this team suited up and playing football again. You want to see the dynamic between Tua and Hill, you want to see if the offensive line is for real, after all the personnel changes and position changes. You want to see this defense performing like they’ve been together for a while (they have!). So what are some of the things I’m interested in seeing besides the obvious ones I’ve already outlined? I’ll tell you.

I know WR’s Cedrick Wilson and Preston Williams have been stuffed down the depth chart, and some fans have already written them off. I’d love to see a healthy dose of both of those guys. WR’s 6’5 225 who can run, and make contested catches don’t get discarded unless they have personal issues, injury issues, or both. Williams has had both, but his salary of $1.3M is totally palatable if he’s got his head on straight and he’s healthy. We brought in Cedrick Wilson from the Cowboys because he had a great season with the Cowboys playing the greater majority of snaps in the slot. Keep in mind that last year, we had our TE Mike Gesicki in the slot often but in McD’s offense, that likely won’t be the case, so Wilson Jr. has a good shot of seeing lots of playing time. He’s a veteran who knows how to run routes, find soft spots and make plays. I hope “EZ” Erik Ezukanma is as great as fans hope he is, but until the lights are on, don’t put him ahead of Wilson Jr. just yet.

The depth at DL will be tested somewhat with the release of DE Adam Butler, who did not pass his physical. Porter Gustin (formerly of the Browns), and Owen Carney Jr. a rookie out of Illinois are the backups behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who will probably be quite limited in his snaps for obvious reasons, so we’ll get a look at if what we have is sufficient, or if we need to address this with another FA pickup. In the offensive trenches, we’ll probably see a couple of plays (if that) of our starting O-line, which is LT Terron Armstead, LG Liam Eichenberg, C Connor Williams, RG Robert Hunt and RT Austin Jackson. Besides the surprise of Connor Williams at center, this how I expected our O-line to be from the get-go.

I don’t think preseason game 1 will reveal all that much, but I’m still interested to see which RB starts, who gets the most action and in what situations. Which back gets the short yardage carries, which back is in on 3rd down etc. To me, the most important thing is staying injury free. If you have bad game, fix it and do better next game, just don’t get hurt. I would like to see Noah Igbinoghene show something positive, anything really. Just give me a pass break up, an INT, a strong tackle or forced fumble, give me something. We all hope the new O-line doesn’t resemble last year’s line at all. I’m curious to see Teddy B and Skylar Thompson, who should both get lots of playing time. Oh yeah, I want to see our offense with a FULLBACK!!! I want to see Hunter Long make a bit of a splash, show us a lil sumpin’. Will Durham Smythe be the next top 10 balanced TE in the NFL? How will our ST’s look with so many big departures and new additions? Will Mostert be an electric returner and will Hill get some action back there too? Lots to see tomorrow at 7:30PM if you can watch it live, or Sunday, 8/14 at 7AM Eastern time on NFLN. Enjoy the game! Football is BACK baby!!!

Must suck to be the owner of that stadium!

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One thing from the game that struck me was that whenever a player went down and was then helped off or limped off the field…. McDaniel was always there right at the sideline to ask a question and/or show his concern. When Trill Williams was down hard, McD ran on the field to be there.

Have to think the team notices that.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Though it’s only been one preseason game, I concur. Methinks the team notices as much and will rally for Coach McDaniel.

  3. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

There’s something special about Coach McDaniel, and it’s not just one thing that stands out. Sure, he’s quirky. Yeah, he’s very intelligent. No doubt, he’s a student of the game. Absolutely, he’s a player’s coach.

Still… there’s something even more than that about him, I sense.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I recall wanting NOTHING to do with Adam Gase as our HC prior to Ross hiring him. My rationale was quite obvious: Peyton Manning was the OC in Denver, not Gase.

Welp, after one season as our HC, I started to believe that Gase was our answer to the HC drought since the great Don Shula. Then after his first season (playoffs!), Gase went NUTS on our roster. Strike one, strike two, and strike three in his second season with us.

The lesson has been learned… yet Coach McDaniel feels much fairer, more football intelligent, and is certainly more seasoned than Gase.

I truly hope Coach McDaniel is the answer we’ve all been hoping for. Time shall reveal…

“I just saw him flying around making plays everywhere and I think that’s kind of his game. He’s a real fast guy, and a great effort guy and he’s really talented.”

Do you think we should consider trading Bridgewater?

    • Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

I would consider the whole roster up for trade!

Several would cost you way more than you would pay though!!!!

And then maybe someone would give up 3 1st for X?

  16. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Boulder the only thing I would say about trading Bridgewater is to be very cautious. I know Thompson looked like everything you could hope for but that wasn’t Tampa’s starting D firing on all cylinders in late November. That was backups in August and Thompson’s first pro start. Bridgewater gives our new Coach a level of comfort I would have to imagine but I can see Thompson as a guy with a viable shot at making a decent career for himself in the league.
As the early part of the season goes on on maybe they do realize Teddy has some value.

  17. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Sincerest condolences Krishna. I feel your pain …… it’s coming up to three years since mum passed and it brought a lump to my throat thinking about how you feel.

Mum and dad only did a financial p.o.a. – not health, which in hindsight was a mistake, but fortunately there were no health-related issues which arose that were compromised as a result of it not being in place. I heartily agree with your advice to Herd if there may be any issues on the horizon. If it’s any consolation to you, I had the same kind of deal as you and Ken – my brother decided to bury my parents ashes without informing me – I’ll never speak to him again. As if grief isn’t hard enough to bear anyway?

I strongly suspect you have the internal strength of character to weather this storm, after what you have had to bear recently, but I’m sending good vibes to you anyway. To most, a mother is a one-off in our lives. A constant, a rock and a comforter. I used to speak to mine very regularly and every single day after dad passed for the almost 2 years until she passed. I still feel the hole inside me where she used to be and even typing this is making me upset. You now have 2 holes inside of you, but for the sake of those departed, keep making the most of things – it’s what they would want. I hope you can lay her to rest in a manner befitting her and may she rest in peace.

It doesn’t matter which computer I try from (home, work, work travel laptop) when the comment box comes up there are the three little symbols for the methods you can use to log in W for wordpress bird for twitter and F for facebook. If I go to click on the W for wordpress a hover popup occurs that says “use one of these three ways to log in” and it hovers right the fuck over the W and blocks you from clicking it!! It would be comical to watch me try and beat the popup to the button if it wasn’t so freaking frustrating.

Yes. Happens to me too and I can’t figure out what’s causing it. At one point I thought it was maybe an update on my phone but it happens randomly so I don’t think that’s it. Then poof, it’s working again and I have no clue why that is either. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Maybe Gesicki insurance

I’d move FB Lovett to TE, he’d be our 2nd best pass catching TE, hope he somehow makes it

Unlikely even more these days, because of Skylar

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I got two of them right, but technically I didn’t call Shaheen as IR, just a cut.

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Greg Little can be something close to avg as the swing tackle our OL should be decent enough all year, if not we may have to move Eichenberg to LT, then Kindley or Deiter to LG causing more issues, in the event Armstead misses some time

What I saw in the 13 plays Jackson and Eichenberg played was good individual OL play, but Coleman or just sheer numbers on D stopped the play

Coach is asked what Noah Igbinoghene has done that has impressed him — his mental fortitude, short memory and mental maturity.

Where he can improve – Coach wants him to play loose, not play not to get beat. To trust his training.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol at Iggy impressing by having short term memory, then goes on to say, he wants him to play loose, not play not to get beat

So which is it, does he have short term memory and forgets about the previous play or does he need to improve on forgetting about previous play?

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

DeVonte Dedmon was brought in from the CFL as a WR but mainly as a return specialist. With coach saying his is going to have Waddle, Hill and Holland returning (I still think this is a bad decision and hope he changes his mind before one of them get’s hurt on the return team) he is more dispensable.

I hope one of the lesser important guys grabs the pig by the balls and takes the return job!

I mean that I do not have confidence in our LB squad. I don’t think our starters are top half of the league guys and I think our backups would not be on other squads. How much more specific do I need to be on a passing comment? Do you want film cut-ups? I think our squad of LB’s is lower half of the league quality and could be / should be upgraded.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rock, relax. It was a question that maybe you’re seeing something I’m not seeing.

For the most part, Phillips, AVG and Ingram will be our OLBs. Then you have Baker (underrated), Roberts (role player) and hopefully Tindall becomes a high snap guy. The other LBs we have are solid backups who have proven they can play in the NFL. I don’t see it as a concern but you do. I was wondering how you’re viewing that. You didn’t mention any LB specifically.

  53. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

When your QBs throw six picks….. time for DBs to throw a party.

“The defensive backs had a little interception party, with Brandon Jones and Nik Needham reeling in Tagovailoa’s errant passes (Jones caught two). Noah Igbinoghene, Elijah Campbell, and Quincy Wilson caught the other three.”

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way it’s sounding, I’m not sure we see many of the core players play in the PS. Especially the vets. As long as they’re in good shape and ready to play week one, they know how to turn it on. Been there done that.

  55. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    well

  56. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sounds like today they were trying to test out what Sanders’ max range is.

“Jason Sanders hit the crossbar on a 62-yard attempt and was wide left from 60 arc.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      What like practice? 😉

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

FIgure if he couldn’t make from 62 they wouldn’t be asking him to try. That’s an incredible boot.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They were doing exactly what you stated, testing his range. Maybe they’re willing to go 59 in games. Now is the time to get a feel for where he is. Nothing counts.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Training camp stats are less important than PS stats. We’ve all been through this for many years. Once the RS starts nobody cares about TC and the PS. This is the team we have. We’ve also seen teams progress as the season goes on. Start off 1-3 and then they’re 6-4. It’s a battle.

For me if our offense takes it to another level we have the defense and STs to compete with anyone. No team is loaded everywhere. Every team has some struggles and questions throughout a season. The great ones fight through it.

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua’s ints, sure it’s just practice, but when you throw that many you failed on the drill you were working on, and unlikely to see much of those types of throws in a game

In other words, maybe he can’t make all the throws

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or the receiver. It’s not in a game. The difference is trying it in practice vs. I’m not throwing that in a game. We’re not that there yet. Like Parcells as a HC always said, they don’t know what’s happening here.

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d rather have the kicker, that is 75% from 50-57, but can’t kick past 60 yards, than the one who can kick em 65, but is 50% from 50-57

  60. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Rock, relax. It was a question that maybe you’re seeing something I’m not seeing.

See, this is one of the biggest problems with only written interaction. So much of human language is nonverbal that all new ones is lost via this medium.

Was actually in a reclined position when I typed that earlier so I couldn’t have been more relaxed. LOL

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Oh, by the way, when I read the word specifically in your sentence I heard Spec-IF-fickal-Ly in my ex-wife’s annoying manner in my head. So there may have been some bleed off aggression picked up by you. 😂

    YES BOSS!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see what you’re doing there. The defense beat the offense, how is that a bad practice?

“Want to really stress this point today. Asked Chase Edmonds after practice about it and he said it’s a good opportunity to test it out, try some throws you might not try in a game situation. Defense did their things, but please consider context to all the picks thrown today https://t.co/qH5jJdqNte

It’s still getting ready for the season. When do you work on such things, 4th quarter of an important game mid-season? Just dial it up and call it even though you haven’t run this play well since TC.

      It’s practice!

The offense has been revamped. Stick with the core basics, principles and evolve. Oh my God we threw too many picks in “practice”. LOL

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

17 incompletes and / or interceptions out of 30 attempts is piss poor and I hope he gets it under control. Whatever “it” is. I read the play by plays and they were not all bombs he just sucked today.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wasn’t just Tua. Maybe they were working on some different routes. No way that could be possible. I mean after all it’s August 16th with 2 PS games to go. LOL

Okay I figured it out. Through the WordPress site it does have an option to ‘VISIT SITE’ on the top right corner once you’re signed in and you looked up this blog. If you click on that it brings you to the traditional blog format.

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just realized that the three dots method to sign in works on my laptop too. Hover your mouse over the lower right had corner and “follow” will pop up with three dots. Click the three dots, click log in. DONE

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

26 more days until we get to see the Dolphins punch the Patriots in the mouth!

  69. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WOW Baker Mayfield was one of 7 in practice…THEY ARE DOOMED! That’s what they discussed on NFL live. At least it wasn’t about Tua’s 3 ints.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Phelon, if you scroll all the way to the bottom of the comments section and then scroll slightly back up the page a little pop up that says “Follow” will appear with three dots next to it. Try clicking on those three dots and log int from there.

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am laughing at the fantasy draft ratings on ESPN “fantasy football marathon”

They have Tyreek as #9 rated WR, Waddle as #13 WR, Gesicki as #10 TE

And Tua who ostensibly will be feeding the ball to these top of the league guys is rated at #17 (which I thought was actually pretty high based on history)

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    I agree with this

Our best guess if Jones is unavailable for the opener? We see Needham, Crossen, and perhaps new signing Mackensie Alexander with Xavien Howard on defense.

Because his rehab has to go perfectly

“The entire time we’ve all known, including Byron, that all things need to hit on all cylinders without having setbacks for that to be the case. Nothing’s changed in that regard. He’s still in that part of the timeline where it’s unknown. As of now, he hasn’t had any setbacks, so still extremely hopeful. I believe in the player and the human being. We hold the same optimism as we did before.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Would be nice to have Jones against the cheats, but they aren’t exactly loaded at WR, could be a high scoring game

Rutroe to anyone other than EZ down the list of WRs, that have ideas of the 53

Catching the football is obviously a critical skill for a wide receiver, but Sherfield and fellow veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu Sr. know how to make up ground in the margins. Both have contributed considerably on special teams in their careers and have lengthy highlight reels consisting solely of downfield blocks.

Two times today, the Miami offense won the edge for big gains. On both plays it was Sanu or Sherfield springing the big play with a crucial block.

  85. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

My bold predictions for the season:

Dolphins undefeated (or at least win the division…it’s that time of year!)
Belichek retires after a losing season, finishing 4-12 behind the Jets in the division
Bills fall to earth, finishing 9-8 and missing the playoffs
The Jets sign Garapolo and continue to suck
San Diego does not make the playoffs
Aaron Rodgers retires halfway through the season, travels to India to become a guru
    Jags win their division

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

those are some really “Hot takes” my friend.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not so bold though to predict San Diego to not make the playoffs, I’ll guarantee it🤪

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t know how you can be so confident. I know the West is pretty good and will cannibalize each other but they are a good team with a good QB, good pass rush, good O line and running game. Playoff recipe.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

You missed off “Giselle informs the waiter she’s finished with her Brady starter and is now ready for the Phish course”.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Coach says yesterday was the most successful red zone period the offense had all camp. Then they went to situational periods and the defense answered the bell. Said the offense turned the ball over way too much in those situations.

Coach says he’s a positive guy who brings energy, but there have been opportunities where he’s had to point out “that’s not good enough.” He says that 100% of the time that he has to do that, his guys have responded.

Coach on yelling at players – I don’t major in it. I don’t enjoy yelling. But you have to do what you have to do to make them understand the urgency of the moment. If you pick and choose those moments, that state that you don’t like to be in, it’s purposeful

Coach on instances where you’re happy with both sides in camp — when effort, intent, assignemt, technique are good – which does happen – generally someone wins the down. I’m happiest when a period has back and forth (with both sides winning plays).

“Interestingly, Shaheen is in the last year of his deal, and the Dolphins could’ve released him and saved nearly $2 million in cap space, but they’ve opted to keep his contract on the books. This will allow him to recover and rehab with the help of the Dolphins’ training and medical staffs, as well as use their facilities to work.”
