Preseason Game 2 – Raiders at Dolphins

Game 1 of the 2022 preseason was different than I expected. I definitely didn’t expect to see Skylar Thompson the entire game and I also didn’t expect that the majority of starters for both teams would held out, but that was the arrangement the 2 teams made, or at least I believe that’s the case. Being that there are only THREE preseason games as opposed to FOUR (due to the new CBA), this will probably be the dress rehearsal game, as preseason game 3 used to be. We did get to see some starters on the O-line last week and I thought the guys looked pretty good overall. Yes, they were going against Tampa’s second string and sometimes 3rd string, but in preseason, those guys are busting their ass to make a name for themselves and trying to earn a roster spot, so the fact that none of our O-line guys struggled is a good thing. Skylar Thompson did everything he could to try and make the roster, and I think it may end up being a tough decision in the end. Tua hasn’t proved he can play an entire season and stay healthy, and Teddy Bridgewater is obviously more accomplished, but Teddy B is on a 1YR contract and putting Skylar Thompson on the PS leaves his open to be snatched by another NFL team. Hard to say the Dolphins are going to the Superbowl with Tua, can they get there with Teddy Bridgewater?

We had some guys show up nice in game 1 on defense, namely LB Cameron Goode, LB Duke Riley, and LB Sam Eguavoen who had an INT. The secondary was pretty ineffective, as both Gabbert and Trask shredded the Dolphins defensive backs. Noah Igbinoghene did not have a good outing and it’s getting less likely each week that Iggy finds his way onto the roster. The Dolphins did sign veteran CB Mackensie Alexander, former 2nd RD pick in 2016 by the Minnesota Vikings. If Byron Jones is fully healthy, Alexander will be competing for the 3rd CB spot with one of my favorites, Nik Needham. At worst he’s a fine depth guy who despite not starting a ton of games (25 in 4 seasons), he’s done it and has enough game experience. I’m holding out hope that Byron Jones can be healthy and start the season playing, rather than on the PUP.

We’ll get to see Tyreek Hill and Waddle on the field together in a game for the first time. That’s exciting! I would like to see the O-line keep up the good work they started last week. No other unit on this team concerns me more. Getting reps together and playing well will give these guys confidence going into the regular season so I’d love to see them succeed. I still think we have a lot of talent on the O-line, namely Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Terron Armstead, Connor Williams and Robert Hunt have already established themselves. One shout out, OG Solomon Kindley had a very strong game against the Bucs. That’s great news because he’s a real mauler, and the fact he played well in this blocking scheme is great for us because he’ll give us some nice depth. Anyone who’s seen this kid in the run game remembers how nasty he is.

On the defensive side, the secondary is the unit to watch. To be honest, it’s the D-line and LB’s that I want to watch, but we’ll see if Mackensie Alexander gets some reps and how he fares in our defensive scheme. I have a lot of confidence in our defense, but the Raiders did some shopping in the offseason too, and now they Davante Adams and our own pal Mack Hollins, along with one of the peskiest slot receivers in the game, Hunter Renfrow. Not sure how much those guys play, but Adams and Renfrow are a handful! Oh, and they happen to have one of the best receiving TE’s in the game in Darrren Waller. The Raiders defense is no joke either, they have the talented DE Maxx Crosby along with newly added Chandler Jones. Our O-line has a tough task against these, and will provide a stout test. Not sure how much Josh Jacobs plays but he’s a load, and rookie Zamir White is a tough runner as well, I know some of us were hoping he’d land here. The score of the game and who wins is unimportant, but how we get there tells the story. Hoping we play strong and remain healthy!

LB Sam Eguavoen who had an INT.

He needs to clean up the missed tackles!

The 3 unstars against Tampa were Iggy, Larnell and Kion, none of the 3 should make the 53, as they’ve sucked all camp

Anyone see the bone headed play our former nickel back Coleman made last night on punt coverage?

Ball bounces at the 5, he’s waiting for it near the goal line, it bounces right to him, but he’s standing in the EZ, had plenty of time to check his feet

Agent David Canter, who also represents fellow cornerback Xavien Howard, started having conversations with the Dolphins about Alexander around the time Howard signed his new extension in April.

We might not see Hill and waddle in a game together this weekend. Waddle has been kept out of practice three days running so it’s doubtful that he will play tomorrow

Raiders look damn good on paper also. Didn’t realize they added Chandler Jones to Crosby. In addition, they also added WR Demarcus Robinson.

Good write, Mike. I’m not sure about the dress rehearsal game either anymore. At this point I want watch the PS games but just don’t want to see any injuries. The RS will be here before we know it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I’m not sure either, it just seemed logical that they might want to see what the starters can do and then use the 3rd game to evaluate the rest of the roster, but that might indeed be old hat.

I have to say I was looking for Tindall but he didn’t stand out to me other than a couple of plays. Maybe he just played his role really well without flashy plays. I did notice Goode more.

And yet PFF gave him a shitty run grade

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah what you said was actually the main part of the article, how he had had such a good grade as a rookie like 68 or something, and then fell to 36 his second year, partly due to playing hurt, partly due to playing NT instead of DT in the 2 gap, because sieler was playing so well, they moved Raekwon more head up on the center and then PFF charged him with anything bad that happened on both sides of the pivot man.

  69. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’d like to see the coach sneak the whole first offense on the field in the 4th quarter tonight to give them some team bonding reps against easier opponents.
I know there are too many injury risks to do that, but the #1 guys have to play some time. Maybe that would be easier than starting at the opening kickoff against the best that will play that day for the Raiders.
It would freak McDaniels out and force him to either rush some better players onto the field or just let it go and see what happens.

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The thing about holding Tua out until the first regular season game is it’s against the patsies*, to whom he has never lost in 3 straight games, so it’s not like he doesn’t know them or that we fear them like we would the *** team.
Plus Studesville is still here to give us a transition.
So Tua might not have as much need to practice for that defense as he would for some other teams with which no one is familiar.

NAPLES SAYS “Duke Johnson already has 2 TDs rushing. And he’s averaging over 6 yards per carry!! I was never sure why we didn’t want to resign him!!”

Well, Naples, you need to ask the geniuses in Miami’s FO that question. Truth is the Duke may very well run for big numbers against OUR DEFENSE when the Bills & the Dolphins meet in September. If NOT Duke, then a certain running back from Florida Atlantic University who scored 66 touchdowns rushing in three years at FAU may be the one piling up big numbers. Somehow BOTH of these guys, the Duke from the U. of Miami (and also UCF, I believe) and Mr. Singletary from FAU are now rushing for the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills. The Bills FO apparently believes both of these guys can help the Bills get back to the Super Bowl.

I’d sure as hell would rather have at least ONE of them helping the Dolphins return to the Super Bowl – – but NOOO-O-O, Ross’s FO guys know better than us “PEE-ONS,”
    right???

REMEMBER THESE WORDS, NAPLES, when the Jills come to Miami in a few weeks!!

I’d like nothing better than having to EAT THOSE WORDS right after that game. But I don’t think that’s going to happen.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In 2019 when Devin Singletary was drafted he went before we picked in the 3rd round. As for Duke Johnson we picked him up off the street last year and yes he played well. We didn’t bring him back but we’re going to use PS stats to view it as a mistake?

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

NO,TIMMY. WE’RE going to use the stats of the Buffalo-Miami game in September to view it as a mistake.

AS for Singletary, are you trying to let Miami’s FO off the hook because they chose NOT to move up a few spots in the draft to take Singletary??–If that’s your strategy It’s a LOSING STRATEGY. You’re going to have to do a LOT better than that to cover-up Ross’s FO failures by the people he’s approved to run the team.

13 years and NO PLAYOFF VICTORIES for Ross or Grier. That’s not an opinion. It’s a FACT!!!

As for the drinking discussion last night .. I have very simple(some would say shitty) taste in beers .. Bud Lite, Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft.. don’t like any craft beers, but I don’t mind an occasional Radler.. otherwise Rum and Coke or my home made Mojitos.. or any Mojitos not made with syrups

Seeing these pics makes me think of the pics Piggy always found with Pigs doing weird shit. What’s up with Piggy not being here, you would think he would have been back by the time TC and the PS got started.

    ********

I came by last week during the game and posted and none of you jerks were posting!

OH, HELL, WHAT AM I BITCHING ABOUT (at 5:07 up the page)??–Didn’t we have 3 whole yards rushing by halftime of last week’s game??
MAYBE we’ll have much better yardage tonight!!

Does anyone else think it’s strange that the nfl broadcasting policy on preseason basically inspires people to look for illegal links

The nfl has to be losing a ton of money on preseason

You can watch the PS games the same way a lot of us watch the games during the RS using the streaming sites. https://reddit.nflbite.com/

Good to see you back Piggy.

I’m like the Stephen Ross of fantasy football

    Totally checked out

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

oh I’ve noticed, I adjust yer roster weekly to ensure you have positions covered ..

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The problem with Ross is he was too checked in and we’d rather have him checked out. 😉

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Yeah he checks out

Then checks in and acts like a maniac

        Then checks out

Then checks in and he’s a fucking maniac again

        Then checks out

So based on that list of who’s not expected to play I’m hoping to see Edmonds and Mostert get some snaps.

Mike Gesicki was in-line for 5 of his 9 snaps Saturday (55.5%).

Last season, Gesicki was in-line for just 99 of his 827 snaps (11.9%).

Good back and forth in RZ work today. Tua found Sherfield + Sanders for TD. Bridgewater to Sherfield and Bowden for scores. Thompson had a TD to Gesicki and Sherfield. D forced 3 throwaways with pretty good pockets from the OL – I had X, Holland and Crossen with good 1v1 coverage

I mentioned last week, instead of nflbite, I used a vpn, changed my location to Miami and streamed the local broadcast. Worked fine.

PIGSTER: SURE IS GREAT to see you on the board.

I AM HOPING that THIS Dolphins’ head coach will be the FIRST non-interim Miami coach appointed by Ross who has a winning record.

    WHAT’s your prediction on this?

  96. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    From Dolphinswire:

“The Miami Dolphins will finally give their first real glimpse at what they might look like this season Saturday. Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and nearly every other starter will be in the lineup for the Dolphins’ second preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Miami Gardens.”
