Preseason Game 2 – Raiders at Dolphins

Game 1 of the 2022 preseason was different than I expected. I definitely didn’t expect to see Skylar Thompson the entire game and I also didn’t expect that the majority of starters for both teams would held out, but that was the arrangement the 2 teams made, or at least I believe that’s the case. Being that there are only THREE preseason games as opposed to FOUR (due to the new CBA), this will probably be the dress rehearsal game, as preseason game 3 used to be. We did get to see some starters on the O-line last week and I thought the guys looked pretty good overall. Yes, they were going against Tampa’s second string and sometimes 3rd string, but in preseason, those guys are busting their ass to make a name for themselves and trying to earn a roster spot, so the fact that none of our O-line guys struggled is a good thing. Skylar Thompson did everything he could to try and make the roster, and I think it may end up being a tough decision in the end. Tua hasn’t proved he can play an entire season and stay healthy, and Teddy Bridgewater is obviously more accomplished, but Teddy B is on a 1YR contract and putting Skylar Thompson on the PS leaves his open to be snatched by another NFL team. Hard to say the Dolphins are going to the Superbowl with Tua, can they get there with Teddy Bridgewater?

We had some guys show up nice in game 1 on defense, namely LB Cameron Goode, LB Duke Riley, and LB Sam Eguavoen who had an INT. The secondary was pretty ineffective, as both Gabbert and Trask shredded the Dolphins defensive backs. Noah Igbinoghene did not have a good outing and it’s getting less likely each week that Iggy finds his way onto the roster. The Dolphins did sign veteran CB Mackensie Alexander, former 2nd RD pick in 2016 by the Minnesota Vikings. If Byron Jones is fully healthy, Alexander will be competing for the 3rd CB spot with one of my favorites, Nik Needham. At worst he’s a fine depth guy who despite not starting a ton of games (25 in 4 seasons), he’s done it and has enough game experience. I’m holding out hope that Byron Jones can be healthy and start the season playing, rather than on the PUP.

We’ll get to see Tyreek Hill and Waddle on the field together in a game for the first time. That’s exciting! I would like to see the O-line keep up the good work they started last week. No other unit on this team concerns me more. Getting reps together and playing well will give these guys confidence going into the regular season so I’d love to see them succeed. I still think we have a lot of talent on the O-line, namely Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Terron Armstead, Connor Williams and Robert Hunt have already established themselves. One shout out, OG Solomon Kindley had a very strong game against the Bucs. That’s great news because he’s a real mauler, and the fact he played well in this blocking scheme is great for us because he’ll give us some nice depth. Anyone who’s seen this kid in the run game remembers how nasty he is.

On the defensive side, the secondary is the unit to watch. To be honest, it’s the D-line and LB’s that I want to watch, but we’ll see if Mackensie Alexander gets some reps and how he fares in our defensive scheme. I have a lot of confidence in our defense, but the Raiders did some shopping in the offseason too, and now they Davante Adams and our own pal Mack Hollins, along with one of the peskiest slot receivers in the game, Hunter Renfrow. Not sure how much those guys play, but Adams and Renfrow are a handful! Oh, and they happen to have one of the best receiving TE’s in the game in Darrren Waller. The Raiders defense is no joke either, they have the talented DE Maxx Crosby along with newly added Chandler Jones. Our O-line has a tough task against these, and will provide a stout test. Not sure how much Josh Jacobs plays but he’s a load, and rookie Zamir White is a tough runner as well, I know some of us were hoping he’d land here. The score of the game and who wins is unimportant, but how we get there tells the story. Hoping we play strong and remain healthy!

Tell your friend to watch out for DuPont chemical contamination of the drinking water. I think the NC AG is suing them for that, but not sure if it is all OK now.
Is the Cape Fear River still polluted?
Wilmington NC (not Wilmington Delaware) is a smallish, somewhat sleepy beach town just across the state line into NC, but of course still on the Atlantic ocean about 175 miles north of Charleston.
And it’s about 125 miles east of the capital of NC which is Raleigh (another British reference city).
I only say this because Wilmington is pretty far from what I’d consider any major city.
Of course Myrtle Beach is only 75 miles south, but that’s still pretty far to go, and the high times there are no more than strip clubs, golf courses, and amusement parks. There’s no pro sports team anywhere near Wilmington.
In other words I’m not sure what in the way of urban culture your friend needs and how often. Wilmington has probably changed some since I was last there, but not sure it’s any more exciting.
It does get hurricanes as a direct hit, in case that is a factor in where to build a house.
Wilmington is just south of the famous Outer Banks like Cape Hatteras etc. so it’s not as precarious in a storm.
The fishing’s probably good there. It’s steamy hot. The fresh seafood and fresh veggies would be great there, if safe to consume.
But of course there are few things as beautiful as Sunrise on a beach facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Reading this it looks like there is a plan to clean the river up, but no doubt Du Pont will be as non-stick as their Teflon when it comes to compo or liability.

My buddy is a Broncos fan so he’s a long way from Mile High – he’s lived in Columbus Ohio, Katy Tx, Woodland Park Co but the altitude didn’t agree with him so he moved in with his sister-in-law in Louisiana whilst his house in Wilmington was being built and he’s hoping to be in by the end of the month. He did golf but doesn’t fish. Likes to hike. Looks like when I visit I need to avoid the steamy hot months.

In terms of excitement, put a beer in his hand and he’s happy as Larry.

      Appreciate the summary!

“surprise” cuts might be LB Roberts (Has he made a play this TC?)
also this might be all for Eguavoen, which’ll be sad.
Riley has played well and so has Tindall.
    also
Scarlett on the edge (hurt) might go short IR list so Goode can get on the 53.
Preston Williams is toast. Wishing him luck with the Bears or ?
to me it’s between Sanu and Bowden if we keep 6 WR,
but Cracraft might have overtaken both. He’s one of those 7-11 guys.
I don’t think we keep 9 OL, but if we do, it’s between Kion and RJones for the last spot in my mind, depending on if they think Little is their swing tackle.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I say keep Bowden. He has had a pretty good PS and he is versatile. Good returning kicks

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

keeping Bowden would protect Hill and Waddle from return duties and give McDaniel another gadget player, since Bowden is a QB/RB/WR,
        but
he’s a Flo regime guy and Sanu and Cracraft are McDaniel guys.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Also, if we keep 9 OL it could be a cut from another team when the cut downs to 53 happen as Kion and RJones have not been doing well. I can see Deisch beating those 2 out from what I am hearing.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah I agree, but Diesch is so green. I think he needs seasoning on the practice squad and seems a perfect type guy to stash there.
We could put Kion and RobJones on there too. I though Kion looked kinda good against LV.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I didn’t pay attention to Kion last PS game. I should have.

Armstead, Eich, Connor, Hunt, Jackson, Dieter, Little (or Coleman), and Kindley
I’m not a big Little fan, but some people are.

  25. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kohou played 41 total snaps in Saturday’s 15-13 loss to Las Vegas, with 27 of those coming in coverage. According to Pro Football Focus, Kohou was responsible for just four yards allowed on three pass targets, good for .15 yards per coverage snap. He also made three run stops (tackles within two yards of the LOS) on just 14 run-down snaps.
    ——————
I like this kid and think he might make it with the injury to Trill Williams.

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The bad thing about the OL is that Armstead is so much of an injury risk that you have to have a guy who can play a couple games for him.
But Little gets hurt just as much as Armstead.
My idea is Eich moves out to tackle if Terron gets scuffed, as he played LT last year, although not well, but maybe the new scheme helps.
Then Kindley slides in to his best position which is LG.
Jackson and Hunt don’t seem to get nicked up (fingers crossed), and Dieter can back up all 3 interior line spots.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s my opinion too Eichenberg to LT and Kindley/Deiter to LG, even though you don’t want 2 guys at new positions, you don’t want a turnstile at LT, so…

My first job was farming and started when I was 12 yo. As a young kid, you get stuck with the shit jobs, literally. Seemed I was always shoveling cow shit out of the barn and chicken barns (I worked for 2 egg farmers also). Had to shovel it twice. Once into a trailer then out of the trailer into a huge hill to be spread on the fields in the spring. It really sucked in mid-summer and mid-winter. That was good for me. I learned very quickly to work hard and fast or else I was shoveling shit all day. Easy part was plowing and disking fields.

Winter was just as busy because everything is harder when it drops below 20 degrees.

I enjoyed farming back then because I got to drive by myself at 13 yo. When I drove 5 miles into town, I was only allowed to drive to the feed store or farmers market though.

I created my own side jobs also. I trapped fur in the winter (mainly mink and muskrat). In the fall, I would drive the rows of the popcorn fields and pickup up all the ears of popcorn that got knocked to the ground. We had an old-fashioned cast iron sheller and would shell all the popcorn, put it in gallon milk jugs and sell it by the road. I would get a ton or more of popcorn. I would usually fill 3 pickup trucks full by the time I was done (there are many popcorn growers in northern Indiana).

UK, I was going to say the same as Naples about Wilmington and Dupont. Though, if it is on Wrightsville Beach, it is not so bad as the Cape Fear River enters the ocean farther south and possibly on different drinking water system. Cape Fear River would be a very clean river if it were not for Dupont. It still is up the river. I hunted that river delta many years. Superb hunting but you have to be on the lookout for MANY black bears. Eyeball liberty is actually really good on Wrightsville Beach as the girls from UNC Wilmington flock to the beach there. I was stationed 3 times about 40 miles north in Camp Lejeune, NC and would head there every payday weekend in the summer. There or Myrtle Beach and Charleston if it was a long weekend of liberty. Charleston (with the Myrtle Beach bypass) is about 3 hours or less south.

Hurricanes are more frequent but seem to be on the lesser side (CAT 1 or 2 for the most part) by the time they get there. I went to my daughters 30th birthday party in Jacksonville, NC last January. I stayed in a condo north of Surf City. There were still many of the same homes and condo’s that were there in the mid 1980’s.

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Long taking a Long time to figure out the NFL game is what has kept Gesicki out of trade talks, IMO. That and him being a receiving threat.

If we don’t trade or resign him, we will probably draft one next year. Michael Mayer, ND in the first round???

Fucking Ross, if we still had two 1st round picks, it would be a no brainer for me.

were potentially exposed to drinking water contaminated with industrial solvents, benzene, and other chemicals.
People there from the 50s on were victims of toxic water poisoning at Camp LeJeune, which would be from the New River.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes, I am worried about that as I lived in the barracks for 3 years my first tour from April 1983 to Feb 1987. It was a bunch of buildings that were torn down and replaced a few years later.

I have not been diagnosed with any cancers yet but not checked either except for the ol’ butt scope. Who knows what’s going on inside me. There are many other cancers it is causing in people. I am having an issue with enlarged red blood cells and easy bruising on my arms, but my military doctor says it is nothing to worry about. Several types of anemia are also conditions caused by the poisoning as it can affect the bone marrow. I am trying to get them to give me a referral to Oncology at Sacred Heart but no luck so far. I may have to go to through the VA.

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think the Gesicki story is going to turn out with a happy ending. My best case scenario is that he gives us 45 yards per game and 8 TDs, and we resign him for about $11M/yr for 3 yrs.
If he does too well, we will not be able to resign him. If he does poorly because he does not fit our offense, then we will lose him in FA anyway to a better fit.

He had surgery at the Navy Hospital where I was stationed and that is where I met her. She was as country as country could get. I would ask her what she wanted to do and it was either go to the beach, go fishing or shrimping. If we went to the beach, fishing or crabbing the jetties on Foley Beach still had to be part of the plan. She liked catfishing up the Edisto River and up the Cooper River near the dam. She was the one who turned me on to fishing the Santee Cooper Lakes (mainly Lake Moultrie).

She would have been “the one” but that is what sucks about military life. You get stationed elsewhere and long distance relationships just don’t work at that young age.

As a kid, I basically grew up on Folly Beach after we moved back to St. Andrews Parish from the farm.
We’d sometimes put out some crab lines in the “groins” as we used to call them on Folly Beach. Those were piles of rocks they dumped at the end of the pilings they built out from the dunes into the surf to hold the beach against the rip currents eroding them.
Great crabbing off chicken necks tied in a knot in some heavy string.

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Then later when we got old enough to go surfing, sometimes those riptide currents would cause some excellent body surfing waves when the tide was high.
You could get high in a close-out and come crashing down in a 4 or 5 foot freefall drop in solid white foam just screaming fast onto the beach.
Of course you had to learn to keep your head sticking out of the front of the wave, or your face would bounce off the beach at the bottom of the drop.
Great fun though, riding the rip north from one pile of rocks to the next then letting the current sweep you past those rocks and find another ride that would launch you out the front of the wave, so you could bounce off the bottom before the next set of rocks and pilings came out of the dunes.
Then do it again over and over all the way from Kiawah Island Shark Hole to the pier.

Reminds me of my high school days attending basketball games… we were some mofoz. Whenever our rival team would get a break from the refs, we’d all cheer “BULL SHIT, BULL SHIT”… and sometimes worse.

One of my friend’s father used to listen to all of our games over the radio and he said he could hear us LOUD and CLEAR… and there was no way to *bleep* it out over a live broadcast. And mind ya, none of us were drinking in those days. We were just some rowdy-ass fans supporting our team! 😀

    Naples,

My very first job was at 14 years old, cleaning and replenishing chicken and rabbit coops (over 1,000 of them in the building). Aside from the rancid smell, I really didn’t mind as much. It gave me a very strong work ethic and a further love for animals, the latter of which I already had.

The pay was exceptionally handsome for what it was and for my age, and it taught me responsibility and respect for life outside of humans.

Ten Observations from Eagles-Dolphins Practice Day 1
The Dolphins got the better of the Eagles in a joint practice session in South Florida on Wednesday, the first joint practice loss of the Nick Sirianni era after going 5-0-1

MIAMI GARDENS – It couldn’t last forever.

The Eagles’ joint practice “winning” streak under Nick Sirianni came to an end when the heat and humidity of South Florida, mixed with a second consecutive week on the road, and the Dolphins’ big-play ability to create a toxic cocktail, halted the most storied August winning streak outside of Baltimore.

Jokes aside, here are 10 observations from the Wednesday session.

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    SHORT TEMPERS

Miami DL Christian Wilkins looked like the culprit, and according to one Dolphins beat writer, it wasn’t a surprise. The fourth-year pro from Clemson likes to talk plenty of trash.

So it was that Wilkins was yapping at the Eagles’ offense, probably at the O-line, during the first session of 11-on-11 team drills on the field where Philly’s offense was going against the Dolphins’ defense.

The officials separated the teams and players stood around with hands on hips while Wilkins continued to yap. When play finally was resumed, everything broke loose.

Lane Johnson threw Jaelen Phillips to the ground while executing a block then, from out of nowhere, Landon Dickerson went flying through the air. Thus began a lengthy push-and-shove contest.

It should be noted that there was plenty of back-and-forth yapping between the Eagles and Browns during their joint practices, but no breakout like this.

“Man, it’s hot here,” said Quez Watkins when asked about the situation. “It’s going to happen. We’re all competing, we’re all trying to go hard, compete, stuff like that, so grown men, stuff happens.”

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

SLOW AND STEADY WINNING THE RACE FOR JALEN HURTS

The Eagles offense was on the far field further away from prying eyes for most of the session and Hurts had a workmanlike performance relying on safe throws and checkdowns.

The biggest opportunity was an underthrown deep ball to DeVonta Smith that could have been a TD with better ball placement.

Smith, though, helped his QB by coming back to the football and drawing a defensive pass interference call. Smith made the catch despite the penalty.

In the battle old old friends and teammates at Alabama Tua probably got the best of Hurts from a splash standpoint but don’t be surprised if the latter wins the race of the better season.

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    REDDICK ROTATION

In maybe the most interesting two-play sequence all summer, Haason Reddick bull-rushed up the middle, steamrolling RB Salvon Ahmed before sacking Tua. On the very next play, Reddick was playing off-ball linebacker next to Nakobe Dean and got lost in coverage.

The long story made short here is that the defensive coaching staff should put Reddick in fast-forward mode as much as possible.

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    MIAMI HEAT

A sports team may have never been more aptly named than the NBA’s Miami Heat.

The Eagles have generally practiced in miserable temperatures in South Philadelphia this summer but what greeted them in the shadow of South Beach was different, a muggy, humid heat that could sap the energy out of Brandon Graham.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    TYREEK THE MAGNIFICENT

Whatever superlatives you want to throw at Hill from a football perspective, you’re probably underselling things.

An amazing combination of speed, route running, and tracking ability, the superstar was a consistent zone buster when it came to the Eagles’ preferred two-high look which spins off into quarters coverage.

It started when Hill dusted Darius Slay in one-on-ones and never stopped. Anytime you heard noise from the sparse crowd of fans in attendance, it was Hill making a big play down the field.

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    RODEO KING

Eagles DT Marvin Wilson stood out in run support, hog-tying Ahmed for a loss in the backfield, the play of the day in run support.

    DAVION MISSES A SPLASH

LB Davion Taylor has been regressing a bit after a strong start to the summer, a narrative he could have reversed with an interception of Tua but the Colorado product let the ball go right through his hands and into a big-play reception.

The DOLPHINS are experimenting with full-fledged support for much-maligned young QB Tua Tagovailoa, whose early-career marriage to safe throws has made fans impatient but could be just the recipe for new coach Mike McDaniel, the former right-hand man to Kyle Shanahan’s run-heavy 49ers. With the electric Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle out wide, and a stable of rushers including ex-NFC West backs Chase Edmonds and Sony Michel, short-area motion should be their specialty. A stingy defense led by Brian Flores holdover Josh Boyer is also intact. But it all comes back to the QB, whose ceiling remains a mystery.

  69. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    also from the article above
The PATRIOTS are building around their own young QB, Mac Jones, in an unorthodox way, forgoing spicy upgrades (sans ex-Dolphins WR DeVante Parker) for an apparent doubling down on the sheer smarts of coach Bill Belichick and his trusted staff. With offensive guru Josh McDaniels gone and no clear successor designated, Jones will likely lean further into Belichick’s old-school approach of winning through the run game, tight ends and defense. The roster is better outfitted at the former two spots, but even if Matt Judon and the “D” finds a way to remain sound, Belichick’s high-floor, low-ceiling personnel doesn’t scream title run of old.

Under Biden’s new plan, borrowers who make less than $125,000 annually will see $10,000 of their debt canceled. Pell Grant recipients will see $20,000 in forgiveness.

For households, the income requirement to qualify for forgiveness is less than $250,000 annually. Any borrower whose income was below the cap in either 2020 or 2021 will qualify, senior administration officials told CBS’ Kathryn Watson.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

You are a smart guy. I can’t believe you actually believe this.

A college degree does not constitute any particular skill that translates to the workforce. Trade school, yes. College no, for the most part. Particularly a 4-year degree. Most of them are not applicable to real life. What the country needs is a workforce that isn’t entitled, that comes to work and earns that better paying job. And burdening taxpayers like Herd and Mike with debts taken on by others does not stimulate the economy. It is nothing more than a bribe and a pay out for feckless fucks who made bad decisions in return for their vote. It is a dive for mediocrity, because no matter how piss poor someone is at they are getting rewarded for doing as little as they can. No responsibility, no consequences.

My wife’s shoulder is set for Sept. 14. It’s a “regular” shoulder surgery. My REVERSE SHOULDER SURGERY is tentatively set for Nov.4, pending tomorrow’s MRI results. It likely will be my last MRI IF I have the REVERSE shoulder surgery because I’ll have 2 pieces of metal, 1 screwed into my humerus and the other into my scapula as part of my procedure. So, with high tech metallic parts in my body, future MRi’s are a no go. Can’t wait to go through the metal detectors at the airports. I’ll be looking at about 3-4 months of post-op rehab that should be over around Super Bowl Sunday. Meanwhile, I’ll have about half of September and all of October driving my wife to rehab sessions. Thankfully, her rehab will be shorter than mine.

Many on the left want it to be 50K max which would be about 785 billion for the first year which is over 60 billion more than our defense budget. Then by 2031 be just short of 1 trillion (about 930 billion).

How exactly do politicians become experts on all things when most of them have a specific degree in one area? They get into office based on citizens voting for them but they have no idea about most things. They win the election with rhetoric and feel good stuff.

Why would we ever want people like this; narcissists who won elections with coordinated banter = bullshit, to run the country with a lot of power?

  97. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Interesting how when the government bailed out wall street firms, auto manufacturers, savings and loans, etc. with hundreds of billions of dollars, it was ok.
But giving a few thousand dollars to recent college students is so terrible.
The net effect of freeing those people to get house and car loans etc. will only help the economy.
Helping billionaires does not help the economy as much as helping people who are living paycheck to paycheck.
Sure some people including me will get somewhat stiffed, and maybe there can be some balancing of that in a follow-up bill, but the way the government set up the repayment of the loans has messed up a lot of people.
    … …
On a related note, I do think the way we do college funding needs to be reconstructed.
Many of the people with the largest debts can’t repay them because they were scammed by crummy on-line “colleges” whose degrees were worthless.
Yes the kids should’ve known better, but many of them were the first people in their families to go to college and they trusted the scammers.
    … …
    On the flip side,
I for one family am unhappy that some people got free rides to college just because their parents were poor while I had to pay full tuition for my kids unless they got academic scholarships, none of which could be “need based.”
    … …
This doesn’t even begin to get at the inequality of free athletic-based scholarships for people who might be just a bit faster or more coordinated than other students.
    … …
Let’s keep working on this problem until we get it all straightened out.

Now I am totally against a “welfare” state, but this is not a lot of money per person that they can just live off that, but it might be enough to get them to where they can be a contributor to the economy a little better.
And I do think the recipients are capped based on how much they can make. Doctors aren’t getting the $10,000, even if they have $100,000 in debt.
I’m assuming some of these numbers based on partial info as it is very new.
