Preseason Finale – Eagles at Dolphins

So this is the last game the Miami Dolphins will be playing that won’t count in the standings. It will count, however, for those players desperately vying to grab a roster spot. The majority of the roster is probably accounted for, but there are probably a handful of bubble decisions that will be determined by performances in this last game. There will be a few positions where the depth will have to be figured out, most importantly DB, where the Dolphins have lost some depth players, and actually may not have their starting CB Byron Jones ready for Game 1 against the New England Patriots. At RB, no one back has looked particularly good in either game yet, so most of the work in practice will have determined the depth chart so far, plus, McD may just want to keep the Patriots guessing as to what our offense will actually be. WR is where a few potential depth guys have looked good, but considering we have the first 4 spots locked up with Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Ezukanma, add in the fact that we may carry 3 QB’s, plus at least one fullback, it’s possible only 5 WR’s make it, and not 6. Does Lynn Bowden Jr. make the cut, or perhaps Braylon Sanders, or River Cracraft, or veteran Mohammed Sanu?

Running back has been a tough one to figure. You would think you can write in Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel, because McD and Grier just brought them here. Myles Gaskin was here already, but he’s a guy that has produced too. Salvon Ahmed is too much like Gaskin, so I guess it will be either or, if one them makes the roster. Rookie ZaQuandre White hasn’t seen much action, just 2 carries for negative 1 yards. Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 39 yards on 8 carries. QB Skylar Thompson is 2nd with 26. In other words, we really haven’t seen enough to have any expectations. ZaQuandre White does have a 19 yard TD reception, so there’s that.

It has to be tempered because it’s preseason, but I like what I’ve seen of DE Porter Gustin, and I think he has a chance to stick. At LB, both Cameron Goode and 3rd RD draft pick Channing Tindall showed some positive things. Tindall is a lock, but Goode may find himself a spot on the roster as well. At CB, Mackensie Alexander is done, (that was quick!), so guys like Keion Crossen and longshot Kader Kohou have a chance because of the injury situation. Iggy seems to be on the outside looking in. Everything I’ve seen from this kid in this preseason tells me he’s a not an NFL player. We did well taking a shot with Nik Needham, I think one of the aforementioned guys is also going to get a shot.

At TE, there’s been lots of chatter about Mike Gesicki getting traded. I don’t see it happening, but I’m not against it if we get the right return. Gesicki is a one dimensional player at the moment, a talented one, but still one dimensional. He’s a receiver, and hasn’t seemed to have embraced the blocking aspect of the position. Durham Smythe can do both, but he’s not as good as a receiver as Gesicki. Long hasn’t really proved he’s great at anything, and Cethan Carter gives you H-back flexibility and is a strong blocker. I think to myself, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter don’t put any fear into any defense, and while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker, he’s a top 8-10 receiving TE. Tough call there, but if they can get a starter where we need it for Gesicki, or a 3rd RD pick in the 2023 draft, go for it.

On the O-line, we’ve been protecting LT Terron Armstead, and Larnel Coleman has been given a lot of playing time. Coleman has been good and bad, as expected. Coleman was a 7th RD pick last year, and he appears to be locked in as Armstead’s backup. The 5 we know will be here are Armstead, Eichenberg, Williams, Hunt and Jackson. The remaining guys are Greg Little, Solomon Kindley, Robert Jones, Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Kion Smith, Kellen Diesch and Blaise Andries. Due to the fact that Armstead is oft injured, Coleman seems to be safe. Greg Little was a 2nd RD pick back in ’19 for the Panthers, so he has some pedigree, but we haven’t seen anything from him here in MIA. Lots of decisions. Our special teams is set with K Jason Sanders, P Thomas Morstead, LS Blake Ferguson, and KR/PR Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. Just stay healthy guys, the roster will work itself out!

I knew Tyreek was a good player, but thought it was just cause he was a blazing fast receiver with moves…. like a bigger Jakeen Grant.

Turns out he is an amazing receiver as well. Great hands to start, but he just adjusts to the ball so well. Must start tracking it in flight real early on.

We actually might be better off if Tua’s passes aren’t dead on. He can adjust to that but the DBs can’t.

I think McD may just prefer his guys, and Cracraft is one of his guys. Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Ezukanma, Cracraft and possible Sherfield if we carry 6 WR’s

Preston making it would make me mad, any of the other wrs can make a case

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think it’s a strong possibility those are the WRs we keep. I thought either Cracraft or Sherfield can handle returns. We already know Hill and Waddle can do it too. But I know we don’t want them doing it all the time.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Unless we have injuries wr5 and wr6 aren’t going to see more than a few scrimmage plays, unless Sherfield or Sanu are brought in to block

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If I remember correctly Flowers is also a good run defender

Playing cheats, Ravens, Bills and Bengals to open the season, all of which run the ball pretty good, could be a reason for the signing

I would put Doaks and White on the PS, because we have 2 fragile RBs.
I would cut TE Carter, but the coaches might not.
I would keep Goode and put Stille on the PS,
But signing Flowers might mean they both go to PS
I would cut Hamilton and put McKinley on the PS, but they might do the reverse.
They might put Crossen on IR to make the numbers work.
    … …
I would find some way (keep fewer DBs maybe) to keep Cracraft, Bowden, and Sherfield because we need them all, and they all earned it.
I guess we have to let Sanu go, but Sanders can easily be stashed on the PS, and I’d like to keep him there.

I don’t think Antonio Gibson gets released but he is a weapon being misused in Washington. They used him solely as a RB. He’s a WR/RB who’s big (6’2 220) and runs in the 4.3’s. Has power on short yardage runs.

If he is ever available, he is a Deebo type who comes from a spread zone run system at Memphis.

If he is ever available, I would nab him.

How were Dri Archer and Cordarrelle Patterson played out of position? They were tried everywhere with their skill sets. Neither were reliable receivers but they were both explosive. When thinking about the 53 you always have to take STs into account. Not every player plays on them and you need a lot of guys to play all those roles who have proven they can do it. Games are won and lost on STs too.

    —————
First, Dri Archer. The Stealers* decided to utilize him as a strict RB… all 5’8″, 175 pounds of him, in the SMASHMOUTH AFC North. He got hit by an NFL D-Lineman and it nearly KILLED him (see Pat White). He should have been utilized as a KR/PR/WR like Jakeem Grant. I now know why he’s out of the league, but I’m sworn to secrecy (private matter).

Cordarrelle? He could never run great routes, dating back to Tennessee. But give him a quick-hitter and he’s DANGEROUS. He should have been unlocked a long time ago, with the realization that he can’t run routes like Keenan Allen or Nuk Hopkins. He should have been utilized as a RB/OW long ago.

Let it be realized, hindsight is 20/20, of course. But sometimes people try to pound round pegs into square holes for far too long… that’s all I’m trying to convey.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And then sometimes, it’s just a BAD idea to begin with.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think they are who they are. Archer didn’t have a position and Patterson has has had a nice career as a multi-skill player. This reminds me of the Jason Allen excuses. He was never good enough to be a starting corner or safety. Depth DB for sure but that was it. Ronnie Lott and Rod Woodson were both pro bowl corners before moving to safety and were both pro bowl guys there too. Some guys are great football players and not just athletes.

The game tells us what players are. I think this not being used properly thing is overstated.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it’s contingent upon the eye of the beholder, and in most cases stated above, the GM and HC weren’t on the same page. I mean, there is NEVER a good reason to shift a player back and forth 50 times between two positions… EVER. It’s that simple, man.

On the other hand, if something isn’t working correctly and in patient time (or a BAD idea to begin with), perhaps it IS time for a position switch.

In this given instance, I think (I said I “think”) it might be time to make Iggy a Safety if he’s going to be cut or sent to the PS.

I’m sorry, but what Jason Allen went through was total BS. JMO, as always.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agree to disagree. I don’t think football is that complicated. If you’re a good player you’ll adapt. Eric Rowe’s mind hasn’t been blown going from corner to safety. I think Jason Allen lacked urgency. Kind of slow-witted.

At WR, I’ve got LBJ and Cracraft as our 5th and 6th WR

So MANY difficult decisions ahead of us…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah for sure. Then signing guys we like better off of waivers. Teams always churn the bottom end of the roster this time off year.

I’m not usually a keep 3 QB guy but I think Thompson threw a monkey wrench into the mix. That is one of the most interesting decisions I think we have. Cutting Bridgewater is a $6.5M cap hit. But I do think a trade is possible if the team likes Thompson more. There may be teams who do not like their starter or backup QB situation willing to take him on for like a 7th round pick. I really don’t know.

What I’ve seen from our offense under McDaniel is much more spreading the field and depth in the routes. We’re not running constant clustered bubble routes and mostly running out of the RPO game. The Bills defense which is very good is not going to be able to play 8 man fronts for long against us. They’ll try but once they get burned a few times they’ll back off. What we saw against the Eagles is the Bill Walsh playbook. Spread the defense out laterally and also go vertical.

The only way to beat it is at the LOS mano-a-mano. The 80’s NYG defense was the kryptonite against the 49ers WCO. They were more physical but they also got beat a few times. So we’ll play opponents who give us a hard time. But our defense has to do that too. That’s the balance.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ever notice in PS, when a team is able to move the ball at will against another team, then they take out the starters, and are still moving the ball at will?

Noticed the cheats doing this some games in the past, Buffalo did it to Denver this year

My theory is the system is what is making this happen, we saw it in our game against the Eagles

Just a PS game, but the system works

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think it’s speed in every phase. McDaniel likes speed. Our defense is a speed defense. We want to be that on ST’s too. That wears on opponents.

Yes you need to be physical, but you have to be able to move and run.

We gave the Eagles a lot of bad tape to make 2nd and 3rd string decisions. LOL

I didn’t see that from him in the PS, he seems to have settled down and figured things out. We saw Herbert not even know he was going to start and lit KC up his first game, I don’t see any reason why Skylar can’t at least play decent, if he was our #2 and had to come into a game

When you can use your legs, you have a big arm, and are pretty solid with accuracy, I think experience is over-rated, at least when comparing a Bridgewater to Skylar. I think the superior natural gifts trumps experience

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Skylar is a better QB today than Teddy. He looks more confident and has more gamer in him. Teddy looks to me like I’ve been there done that and thinks he’s better than he is physically. That scares me. Reminds me of Brissett.

Skylar Thompson has never looked overwhelmed and making goofy mistakes. He has not looked like a rookie 7th round pick. We all know that. What do we do?

There are some extremely intelligent posters here and in all frames of life outside of football. As such, I was wondering what anybody’s interpretation of this image is…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The reason I ask? I haven’t the answer. For the sake of context, it allegedly came from “The Lost Book of Nostradamus”, released by the Vatican nearly a decade ago.

Is anybody good at translating images here?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Interesting. What made you select this image?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t want to get into it but the Catholic Church is its own entity. They basically have their own city or whatever you call it with the Vatican. They’re a long time institution and influence on humanity. Both good and evil. I’ll leave it at that.

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looking at the bomb to Hill again, I wonder if it’s complete, if the pass is thrown right at Hill

The defender is right there, anything other than perfect in stride, I’d say it might be defensed

By throwing it high and inside, it allows Hill to break on it and go get it, very hard for a defender to break with Hill

They may start having Tua just throw it up and let Hill go get it

Probably at least once a game, until DCs can figure out how to stop it

You could leave a deep safety back there, but then you’d get destroyed underneath

Tua throws a very catchable deep ball, especially for Hill

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We stashed Bowden on IR all last season.
If it came to keeping Crossen vs. not keeping both Sherfield and Bowden,
I’d rather put Crossen on IR.
He’s never been a big contribution on defense in his career.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s not smart, we don’t need another wr, we need CB help and he’s played good enough to hold down the fort, plus he’s a gunner ace

    Bold prediction:
Both Cracraft and Ezukanma have played their way past
Ced Wilson in the depth chart.
Which is great even if only in my mind.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On the negative side it makes the signing of Wilson look bad, especially because he’s the 9th highest salary on the team. My guess is Wilson will be given playing time as the 3rd receiver and unless he falls on his face, or EZ or Cracraft are outplaying him, Ced will be the #3.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think WR’s 1-4 will see a bunch of snaps

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The accuracy on the long pass to Hill was good enough that he made the catch.

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s hard to connect from 51 yards when it was not wide open from blown coverage.
The CB got dusted at about 40 yards, but the safety coming over the top had an angle on Hill and was right next to him while the ball was in the air,
until Hill tracked it and turned on warp speed to go get it.

  63. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

If we keep 4 rbs why not keep Ahmad as the 4th? He has had a better TC than Michel imo

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Michel is the power back, need to keep one of Michel, Doaks, or Dr White

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Michel is a 1st round draft pick from a major major NCAA power program who was drafted by bellicheat and has 2- one- thousand yard rushing years in the NFL.
I like Ahmed, but he is none of those things.
And, as Steve says, Sony has a needed skill set to add to the RB room.

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tua threw to a spot half a football field away with his receiver sandwiched between 2 DBs when he had to launch the ball,
and he had no red jersey, so there were 300 pounders falling all around him.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The safety was already running as fast as he possibly could, and the separation occurred literally in the last second.
That is amazing athleticism by Hill and by Tua to hit a moving target going that fast that far away.
Hill was going at least 20 miles per hour.
The ball is estimated to have traveled 56 yards in the air.
Hill gets big $$$ to make those catches.
    As far as leading him,
I’d rather it be a 51-yd completion and down by contact
than a 60 yard attempt that just goes off his outstretched fingertips.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyreek is super fast and quick, he likely doesn’t make that catch if he’s 6′ or over

His quickness and processing allowed him to adjust to the ball

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To me that is one of the fun things about football.
I mean let the average athletic person try standing in their front yard
and tossing a football down the street,
hitting a guy on a bicycle down at the corner crossing the street at full speed
sandwiched between 2 other guys on bikes there who hate him.

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jackson on his sack didn’t give up, like I initially thought, once the DE was free, there’s nothing Jackson could do

He was actually beat early in the play, before the DE turned the corner, so let him go and hope for the best or hold

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Forget about the sacks, Trey Flowers is an exceptional run defender, something we didn’t currently have, great pickup

His passrush numbers are down of late, because he’s been injured, but when healthy he was good enough to get a fat contract

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:
