Ken, i think the NFL would prefer to have Tua vs Allen but are more concerned with being vilified for possibly having it look like they chose business over taking cate of their players

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Goodell runs the NFL for the owners and protects the NFL shield. Just like big CEO’s of big companies like Quaker Oats got rid of Aunt Jemima because it was deemed offensive. If you can’t admit that the NFL, and therefore the Dolphins have to be very careful about how they handle the Tua situation then I don’t know what to say. I obviously don’t agree they should have to but this is the pussified world we live in

    • Like Ken said, it’s not up to them.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You can’t say that though. Did our last issue with Tua, after the Green Bay game not have to be investigated and then cleared by the NFL? You don’t think they’re right on top of this situation right now?

      • Mike, all that was about was whether the team followed protocol, not that he did or didn’t have a concussion. That is decided by the doctors.

Everyone says let’s listen to the medical professionals and then when they say he’s cleared, pundits chime in saying I’d give him more time even though doctors say that means nothing.

And, like I said there are risks and reputations….please read what I wrote snd understand it.

    It’s not the team’s decision! It’s Tua’s….wtf? Lol…

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the Damar Hamlin situation showed the NFL that a lot of people, even people who aren’t even fans, really cared about Damar. It’s a good thing he’s ok or the NFL would have been vilified for him getting hurt. I think it could be the same for Tua. Sure, the NFL can state that neurologists cleared him an blah blah blah, but will anyone believe it? I don’t even think my friends would believe it

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – first we have to find a neurologist willing to put his neck on the line and clear Tua. Then, it’s up to Tua

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I 100% agree with Mike E… the NFL does NOT want to have any part of Tua getting yet another concussion, especially during the playoffs where many more millions of people are watching… and ESPECIALLY on the heels of the Hamlin incident.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ok, like nothing can be manipulated by a multi billion dollar company. I’m surprised you think this way Ken, I really am. Optics are everything, and if Tua plays and gets hit and gets carted off, it will be a terrible look for the NFL after Damar Hamlin barely escaped death

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim and Ken,

It’s not that I don’t want Tua to start on Sunday, guys. I just see the NFL shutting him down to avoid more damage to their brand.

  9. When the doctors in Cincinnati that treated Hamlin and cleared him to be transported back to Buffalo, did the NFL find a doctor to say no he should stay another week? No they didn’t. No difference with Tua’s situation. Also Tua’s heart didn’t stop where he needed CPR. He was standing on the field in the last game, he wasn’t in the hospital. Apples and oranges.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All we’ll hear is that he’s still experiencing concussion symptoms and is unable to play. You can either believe that or not believe. I don’t think he’s going to be cleared and I don’t think he’s going to play

  11. “The NFL (under Goodell) has consistently trumped the US Constitution.”

    M13, how so?

  12. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

What may be an even worse look for the NFL is the lopsided game that will occur if Tua doesn’t play. Lol.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ok, I’m not saying if Tua is cleared the NFL won’t let him play, I’m saying they will find a way to make it so he’s not cleared.

  14. M13, WTF does Hannity and McCarthy have to do with what we’re talking about?

You said “The NFL (under Goodell) has consistently trumped the US Constitution.”

I asked you how so and you changed the subject.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hate to say this also, but the Buffalo Bills are a great story right now. “WIN FOR DAMAR” is something anyone and everyone can get behind. The Dolphins crippling their QB is not as heartwarming.

    • We’re all wishing Damar the best in his recovery but there are other teams looking to win too. I’m not rooting for the Bills because of Damar. I’m rooting for good health for Damar and that’s where it ends with the Bills for me.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh no, I’m not saying we should root for them, but it’s a feel good story that fans, and especially not fans can embrace. A little Hollywood for the NFL, how wonderful!

THE NFL doesn’t NEED the commissioner’s office to fuck-up the Dolphins.
STEVE ROSS is doing that job quite well, thank you. And he doesn’t NEED any help.
HIS DECISION NOT to draft ANY OFFENSIVE LINEMEN in the last draft is sure getting the job DONE.

This line CAN’T adequately protect ANY of its quarterbacks. This line can’t produce consistency in the running game. But THEY ARE EXPERTS at getting untimely penalties just as the team tries to mount a drive. To say Ross is disingenuous is to compliment him. He’s worse than that!!

This football idiot spent hundreds of millions of dollars on the best receivers money can buy. He even landed a couple of really good running backs. And he drafted a quarterback who, if given just a bit of protection, can pick any defense apart. Yet all this talent IS BEING WASTED because we lack an owner who is committed to building a better than average offensive line.

It was true a decade ago. And it’s just as true NOW!! Sad but true.

Miami’s biggest need is A NEW OWNER!!!

“It’s hard to imagine Tua Tagovailoa playing on Sunday

    Getty Images
Sixteen days ago, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered at least his second concussion of the year. He has yet to be cleared to play.

Five days from a playoff game in Buffalo, it remains to be seen whether he will be.

Frankly, it’s hard to see it happening. Tagovailoa has become the unwitting face and name most associated with head trauma in pro football. During the 2022 season, he has had two, maybe three, head injuries that have occurred when his head struck the turf. Every time he plays, there’s a real chance it will happen again.

Tua technically will be able to play after he’s cleared under the five-step return to play protocol. At this point, what responsible doctor will sign off on letting Tua play again? And what kind of messages could they be getting from a broader football power structure that is still reeling from the horrifying on-field cardiac arrest suffered by Bills safety Damar Hamlin?

At this point, the last thing the NFL needs is another serious on-field injury. Tua provided exactly that, in Week Four against the Bengals.

Ultimately, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross makes the call on whether Tua does or doesn’t play. Some think he should have kept Tua from playing on that fateful night in Cincinnati, four days after Tua struck his head on the ground and clearly wobbled before inexplicably being cleared to return to a game against the Bills.

Even if the doctors clear Tua to play against Buffalo, Ross has to sign off on it. It’s hard to imagine Ross letting it happen.

It’s also hard to imagine Ross not thinking once again about whether there’s a better short- and long-term answer at quarterback than Tua, someone who can and will avoid suffering head injuries.

Is that fair? Is that right? It’s frankly no different from being not strong enough or not fast enough or not skilled enough or too old or two expensive or too whatever to play in the NFL. Tua is too susceptible to concussions, and that could be the thing that causes his NFL opportunities to evaporate well before his skills would have otherwise diminished.”

Five Things I Think I Think About the Miami Dolphins – Week 18
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the offseason

    By EgregiousPhilbin Jan 10, 2023, 6:03pm EST 13 Comments / 13 New

Right on the precipice of the most disappointing collapse in modern memory, the Miami Dolphins managed to eek out a win against the division rival New York Jets and claim the #7 seed in the AFC to reach the playoffs for the first time in six years.

And that, my children, is something to celebrate.

The fact that they did it by winning one of the ugliest games anyone will ever have the displeasure of gutting through?

As Dwayne “Rocky ‘The Rock’ Maivia” Johnson would say: IT DOESN’T MATTER.

    Everybody’s 0-0 again.

    Now, let’s get to gettin’:

    1. Skylar Thompson is (currently) a backup:

Put your pitchforks down. Yes; he won the game and played admirably, especially considering he’s a 7th round pick thrust into a win-or-go-home game with one week to prepare as the starter. He was 20/31 (65%) for 152 yds, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs. The offense, despite their back-to-years’-past approach to pass protection only surrendered one sack. Oddly, Thompson’s QBR was 14.8. Don’t ask me how it’s calculated, but that’s a lot more harsh than I feel he deserves.

The reality is that Thompson plays like a backup because that’s what he is right now. That’s not an indictment, just an observation. Against the Jets (who, admittedly, have a very good defense), he was languishing through his reads and on ocassions where he had ample time to find a receiver and make the throw, the pass was poor.

All that said, I’m not down on the guy. Anyone who actually expected him to come in, make Pat Mahomes look like Pat White, and ride off into the sunset as Miami’s franchise quarterback of the future is out of their head. He did, however, do at least one thing better than Tua does (I SAID PITCHFORKS DOWN).

Thompson manipulated the pocket and, more importantly, got out of it when the protection broke down to extend the play more consistently than Tua typically does. I’ve said before that I think Tua’s inability (or maybe just unwillingness) to improvise is the main characteristic holding him back from being his best. Thompson appeared to have that skill (though neither of them are all that willing to take off and run with it when there’s space).

Putting the obvious injury bugaboo aside for a second and comparing based purely on ability right now: I don’t see Thompson challenging Tua whatsoever. I don’t even think he’s a better option than a healthy Bridgewater to win in the immediate term. I do think, though, that given his youth and what he’s shown so far, he should supplant Teddy as the primary backup and be given the chance to grow in Miami.

    2. An ugly, boring game with so much on the line (and no one cares!):

There’s almost nothing to learn from a battle of third string quarterbacks. This game was a slog in every way except the outcome. And that’s all that counts!

Mike McDaniel leaned on the run game for (maybe) the first time all year, which fans had been pleading for him to do even when his top passer was behind center. Raheem Mostert looked dominant and the balance helped keep the offense as smooth as it could be given the circumstances. Mikedaniel also won his first challenge of the season, so that’s nice for him.

With the good also comes the not-so-good, it seems. Some of the play calls (looking at you third down screen passes) made me think that McD had been introduced to former Dolphins’ hope strangler Adam Gase at a cocktail party and taken some of his slurred advice to heart.

Knock it off. Don’t do that. Don’t do anything that guy would do.

Going for it on the first drive on 4th and 5 from midfield? Is that what we’re gonna do today? We’re gonna be stupid?

Every variable surrounding this game dictated it was going to be a chore, so play the field position game. Joe Flacco won a Superbowl, but that was before the invention of the automobile, so let’s make them march the whole field, whaddyasay?

Look, there’s not a lot of analysis to be had here. The game looked like two teams on long losing streaks led by third string quarterbacks. A one-legged ass kicking contest, if you will.

And Miami won. So we have the best leg in the game today.

    3. The defense gave Boyer a good reference for his resume:

Josh Boyer might as well be this guy right now because fans can’t seem to wait for him to become this guy.

I’m not sure if Boyer will receive the proverbial kingslaying, but whether he does or not (and deserves it or not), his defense put up a nice performance for what could be his regular season Fins’ finale.

They held the Jets to 149 yards through the air (yes, thrown by Joe ‘Did his homework by candlelight out of necessity’ Flacco) and 38 (!) yards on the ground. I mean. That’s good. That’s good defense. They only gave up two field goals. That’s also good.

The one knock you could give them was the lack of pass rush against an opponent missing three of its O-line starters while Joe Flacco’s ghost’s grandad huddled behind them for warmth. They didn’t record a single sack, despite Jaelen Phillips doing his darndest.

I can’t imagine a solid game against a bad offense is enough to move the needle for anyone who’s evaluating Josh Boyer (or any defender, for that matter). But it was nice of them to show up strong when the time came.

    4. The announcers didn’t wreck my brain like they usually do:

I often try to sneak in a point less about the game and more about something ancillary just to keep things fresh. Not infrequently that involves me ragging on the announcers for being bad at their very cushy jobs.

    NOT THIS DAY!

Daryl Johnston and Joe Davis did a nice job. Unlike other commentators, they weren’t clearly rooting for either team (which is, 100% of the time, the not-Dolphins option when it occurs). Being a former player, Johnston called out poor execution and bad play design, plus he had fair assessments for the most part on missed penalties: both ones that should have been called and ones that were called incorrectly.

Typically the commentary makes me want to bash my head in. Nobody’s perfect, but Johnston and Davis weren’t a detriment.

    5. Miami’s hopes hinge on health:

    Oh yeah. The playoffs. Right.

    MIAMI IS IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Feels weird to write. Seems like a typo.

Almost unbelievably, the Dolphins will have to face the Buffalo Bills for a third time this season in the Wildcard round next week.

The Dolphins beat the Bills 21-19 in Week 3 and lost on a last second field goal 29-32 in Week 15. Miami can beat Buffalo.

Of course, the specific collection of players who just beat the Jets 11-6 probably can’t.

That’s not doomsaying, it’s just being practical. Miami needs some key players back healthy to give the Bills everything they’ve got.

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle got dinged up during the game against the Jets, so they’ll need to shake those injuries by Sunday. Terron Armstead missed Week 18, but is desperately needed to keep the offensive line from imploding. Raheem Mostert was the bell cow back until he suffered a broken thumb and his availability is doubtful. Then, of course, the grandaddy of them all is Tua. Two weeks and change removed from a concussion, it’s anyone’s guess if he’ll be able to play or not.

Without at least some of those players back to 100%, Miami’s fighting an uphill battle to say the least. With each returning player, their chances go up. If somehow everyone is able to go next week, the Fins have a real chance to take the Bills down again and start their third winning streak of the year.

Playoffs? PLAYOFFS? For once, Jim Mora: yeah. Playoffs.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess thinking the NFL will keep Tua out of the game Sunday is a conspiracy. I think in the society we live in today, it’s more of a reality than a conspiracy, where minding your pronouns is a daily battle and kids can identify as cats, and these kids have parents, and that’s who the NFL doesn’t want to see Tua take the field jumping up and down and excited, and then carted off in the “fencing response”.

  22. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Here is my insensitive take….

…the NFL is in the entertainment business…a dangerous business where players know the risks (mostly)….the minimum salary is awesome compared to the rest of the planet…lol.

Little Johnny at home sees his “hero” go down in flames….that is sad…and hopefully with good parenting he/she/it will evolve and understand the realities of life in a healthy manner….

Tragedy is everywhere (business included)….it’s how we deal with it that matters.

So, imo, we and the NFL should deal with it without exclusion. Man up!

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – Are you talking about Hamlin or Tua flatlining? I know Hamlin did

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – I agree with your insensitive take. I feel if Tua is cleared, it’s his and the coaches decision if he plays, no one else’s. On the other hand, I don’t think the NFL brand shares that viewpoint, especially in the aftermath of what could have been a tragedy in BUF with Damar Hamlin.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wish people would get off the Damar comparison with Tua

From what I read med professionals say about Damar, it was a rare/freak between beats incident to a healthy player

Yeah there’s the bad publicity thing for both, but that’s on NFL it shouldn’t effect us/Fins, the NFL has an obligation to the networks paying billions for the rights to showing their games, to put out the best product they can

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Why? From an NFL image perspective both are completely relevant…it’s a dangerous fucking sport…lmao

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Relevant, but not directly related

These players chose this profession, knowing the risks, it’s on them not the NFL

NFL only responsible, if they’re negligent

  26. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What happened to Damar is unrelated to what happened to Tua. And the league cannot live in fear of injuries. It is a violent game. People will get injured. The league can’t control that. If someone is cleared to play then they can play

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      They ARE related….it’s a dangerous sport…lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Really? They ARE controlling it though. How many flags were thrown on ridiculous roughing the passer calls this season? We also got lucky on what was called a horse-collar tackle near the end of the Jets game. I don’t need to tel, you that a brain injury isn’t the same as a guy limping off the field or a guy holding his arm.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Yes they do make rules to try to control injuries but I am talking about the actual decision as to who plays. The league doesn’t decide that

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lucky on what was called a horse-collar? That was 100% a textbook horse-collar tackle. Not sure why you grouped that in with ridiculous roughing calls.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Please don’t tell me you think the tackler’s hand has to be inside the pads. That’s for amateur football fans.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hate the horse collar rule, but it was the correct call, and I’m not going to say they shouldn’t have called it or we got lucky, as we’ve seen how many calls went against us in the 5 game losing streak

You want the calls you have to win and be a good and interesting team

I hate Bama and the cheats with a passion, but the playoffs just aren’t the same without them

  30. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Steve, you’re obviously entitled to your opinion, but not sure why you would hate the rule. I think it’s one of the best rules in football to avoid injury.

The way Waddle went down on the tackle is exactly the reason it’s in place, and it’s pretty easy not to tackle that way, the same way it’s easy not to wrap your fingers around someone’s facemask.

I called out ‘horse-collar!’ the second Waddle was tackled even though we couldn’t see it on the live play from our angle, just because of how awkwardly he got twisted and pulled down.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because it’s a pussification rule, that benefits a team, that shouldn’t benefit based on in most instances a weak variation of rule, 1 victim got hurt by this type of tackle – TO

Using that logic, just the same as Brady getting injured against KC 10 years ago, then every time there’s a season ending injured the league should make a new rule

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s no different than a DL sacking a QB and getting a roughing call, because he used too much force and didn’t back off enough

Stupid to give a team a benefit, especially when the other team made a play

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just another way of the officiating crew to influence the game

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“Just another way of the officiating crew to influence the game”

More weak sauce. When was the last time a game was decided on a erroneous horse-collar call? Or better yet, when was the last time you saw an erroneous horse-collar call? I MAY have seen one that was close before, but I can’t name any off the top of my head. Usually, when they are called, it’s because it was a horse-collar, and it’s obvious.

Roughing, holding, PI, these are the judgement calls that influence games, not horse-collars, lol.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Terrible logic IMO- apples to oranges- and not a pussification rule like some of the roughing the passer rules.

The Brady rule was a knee jerk response because of a low instance injury to a ‘face of the NFL’ player. While the horse-collar rule is removing a dangerous tackling technique from the game that has a very high instance of injury, a technique that is very easy to change, which is why you don’t see horse-collars called very often.

As for comparing it to a DL sacking with too much force, again terrible comparison. One is a judgement call by the ref, the other is a way of tackling that is clear and obvious when it happens and easy to call.

So, I guess I just disagree with you entirely, but thanks for the answer, lol.

I am enjoying the extra week we have too. Regardless of everything else, we’re still a playoff team, top half of the league.

I expect a blowout on Sunday, but maybe we stay in it for awhile- an early pick-6, or a blocked punt, or maybe our D just plays well- anything that keeps us in the game in the 1st half would be nice.

McDaniel said he thinks having the must-win game in Week 18 will help his team not be so nervous against the Bills and yet still play backs-to-the-wall tough.

All of our injuries, especially not having Tua, probably makes that a moot point, though.

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No matter how badly we lose on Sunday, our players can build off being a playoff team. And they’ll all now have “playoff experience,” which ppl always say helps.

Having to start our 3rd team (ROOKIE) QB will give our players a bona fide excuse for any loss, so they can retain their pride and confidence through the off season and hit the ground running next spring.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If we do, it’ll be because of Skylar throwing 3 picks or losing 2 scoop and score sacks or Crossen giving up 3 TDs to Diggs or something like that, and everyone can write that off due to them being in over their heads.

Wilkins, Phillips, and Sieler will make sure we force their offense to grind if the game is left to them. And if Hill and Waddle are ok to play, they can score in a minute, so unless they get snuffed at the LOS for the whole game, we should score.

The Bills defense is not as good as the Jets is.

Sportrac says we are 7m over the cap next year already, even with only 38 players under contract. Supposedly the cap is going up next season, but we won’t know by how much until they set it. Not sure when the “Big new TV contracts” people keep parroting about will kick in.

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If we lose because Diggs beats Crossen all day long, oh well.
    Crossen is very fast,
but he cannot be expected to compete on talent with a star like Diggs.

If the Bills get 41 points, that’s 6 TDs or 5 and 2 FGs.
That’s basically scoring every drive for 7 straight drives.

Our defense is too sticky to allow 7 long drives,
just because there isn’t that much time in a game,
so we should be able to keep it closer than that,
as we did in the first two meetings,

UNLESS our drives are all 3 and outs and/or quick INTs,
    especially pick 6s.

    That COULD happen,
but then you can’t blame the defense,
if our offense plays like that,
even if the Bills do get 41 points.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Then you double up on Diggs and make Gabe Davis beat you. It was crazy that Boyer allowed Wilson to run free until the 4th quarter. Belichick always makes sure to take away one guy, the most dangerous player. I agree with that philosophy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because we don’t believe them, just as easy as the NFL telling Fins we don’t want Tua to play they could also do the same with the Dr’s or just never have him get checked for clearance

We know the NFL manipulates games, we know they lie about a lot, they destroyed the Belicheat spygate tapes like washing a server

Have can you have trust enough in them to think they wouldn’t do this?

  67. New Age's avatar New Age says:

So…I feel like Grier, if still here, should make sure we have a ton of picks in 2024 and set up for a Tua-less future. I think his injury history makes a big contract out of the question for a smart team and I really don’t see him even playing 8 years in the league. It almost feels like Russian roulette already. It sucks for him, but the risk is just too high. Dude has never finished 14 games in the most protected position in football. He’s barely been sacked the past 3 years. He’s just too risky in a sport that is focusing on player safety now.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I agree. At this point, Miami can’t plan on Tua as a long term starter at QB. Obviously drafting one in 23 is a non-starter, so you have to look at 2024. However, they collected some pretty good offensive pieces they should not trade away for picks.

I think they pick up a FA QB, like Garapolo (who is also fragile), to get through next year if Tua goes down again. All this is predicated on Tua not deciding to retire, of course. Garapolo may want too much, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do a “prove it” deal with someone like Mayfield. Jackson wants big money fully guaranteed (not the Balmore is likely to let him walk) and is hurt now anyway, so he is not an option. Methuselah may play for cheap just to stick his finger in Belichek’s eye, but then they’re saying Tua is done if they sign him. Pretty slim after that.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I hate it but his concussion issues aren’t going away and he’s injury prone anyways. Just too much riding on a guy who will probably never start 17 games in any season.

The problem with making a deal with the Devil, is that forget about the Miami Dolphins achieving anything, it will be 100% Brady all of the time. That in particular, would be what I can’t stomach. Christian Wilkins could amass 100 tackles, 10 sacks, 5 FF and 30 TFL. Jaelan Phillips could have 18 sacks and 3 TD’s on FR’s. Bradley Chubb could have 15 sacks but Tom Brady

      • The NFLN still covers Brady and the Cowboys like it’s the great playoff game and that game is on Monday. They have plenty of time to cover that game at length but every time I turn it on it’s coverage of that game. Brady to the Dolphins would be Brady all the time as if the rest of the team doesn’t matter. It would make me sick.

I would have a hard time following the team if Ross canned McDaniel and brought in Harbaugh or Payton as his new shiny toy.

  79. I know concussions are serious but those are the only injuries Tua has had this year. Two concussions. I think it’s way too premature to be discussing moving on from Tua.

He does however need to find a way to stop falling backwards the way he does. That’s how both have happened.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

If you can avoid slamming your head against the turf in football, then, all is good….regarding concussions for QBs…lol

      • Tua needs to learn that the play isn’t there and just go down. That’s his issue. Nick Saban talked about that when he was at Alabama. That’s how he hurt his hip. Being tackled in awkward ways. Live for another another play. Just throw it away or go down and take the sack.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Moving on from Tua would be way too premature, moving on though would be more from a Tua calling it quits, with salary cap ramifications and what he did this year no reason to just trade or cut him

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      We need:
      A reliable backup
An overhaul on special teams and a new ST coach
      An overhaul at LB
      Maybe one more RB
A TE that fits the system
      More DBs
      Maybe a New DC
Low cost Additions via free agency for the OL
And to get rid of guys like Byron Jones who did not produce

I think we can accomplish that in an offseason evens strapped Bc of the salary cap

      • An overhaul at LB? You know Chubb and Phillips are a part of that right? Baker and Roberts have played very well this year, even Riley has been a good nickel LB. We need Tindall to develop into more snaps. I don’t see LB as a void at all.

I was talking about personnel though, not coaches.

I didn’t mean those 2 who I am calling “edge” but Baker is not getting it done and other than hitting hard either is Roberts

All those QB rushing yards have been a real problem

      • That’s because we rush up the field so hard (not a read and react approach) and the talented running QBs sneak out. Do you realize we finished 4th in run defense this year?

      • That includes the historic Justin Fields game and some other QBs running on us. When your LBs are in coverage or blitzing they can only do so much. Our secondary has been the weak link and mainly due to injuries. What if Byron Jones, Brandon Jones and Needham were in the lineup? Very different defense.
