Dolphins roster nearly complete – Do we draft for this season or beyond?

As Naples was able to convey so clearly, this roster is basically set. There are only a couple of spots on the roster in which anyone drafted in this 2023 NFL Draft can make even the slightest impact on this season, and beyond. With that in mind, let’s once again look at those spots and the players that could have a chance to make that impact. To me, Tight End is the easiest. We have two blocking TE’s, Durham Smythe and Eric Saubert, and then we have a tweener, Tanner Conner, who was a former college WR converted to a TE. Realistically though, Conner is at best what we hoped former Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki, a dangerous receiver. Neither Smythe or Saubert has proven that they can be reliable receivers, but Conner has elite speed for the position (4.37 40) and hops as well with a nearly 40″ vertical. I’ve already illustrated that neither TE is a true receiving threat between Smythe and Saubert, they have a total of 121 receptions, 88 for Smythe over 5 seasons, and 33 over 6 seasons for Saubert, 3 TD’s for Smythe, 2 for Saubert. Those career totals don’t add up to one season for Niners TE George Kittle, who HC Mike McDaniel had the services of in SF as the Offensive Coordinator.

This brings us to Darnell Washington, who already has established that he’s a solid in-line blocking TE, with the size to get bigger, and he’s already shredded. His pass catching is more on potential than actual production, or he’d likely be the first TE off the board. Taking into account that TE is probably one spot where someone could potentially slide into early on, I wouldn’t be upset if we traded up to get him, and it looks that might be a necessity to guarantee he’s on our roster. If your roster is already mostly set, and you only have 4 picks, none of them on day one, and two of them on day 3, I see nothing wrong with acquiring one impact player in exchange for one of our 3 other picks. I think Washington has the size and speed to become a good receiver, and the fact that he could line up now and block on the line and downfield just as easily makes him an easy choice.

Another position where I think a player could help us right away is RB. Let’s face it, we have a RB room that screams “Running Back by Committee!!” There’s not one feature back on our roster, and one half of our RB room is signed through ’24, the other half on year contracts. Adding a versatile RB like Jamhyr Gibbs would be an easy pick. Gibbs increased his carries and receptions each year, and was a big part of the Alabama offense. He has a similar skillset to Mostert, Ahmed and Gaskin, in that he’s a very good receiver out of the backfield, can run either between the tackles, and has the speed to break a big run at any time with 4.36 speed. Mostert had career highs in carries (181) and yards (891) in his 8 year career. Wilson also had career highs last season, splitting the season between the Niners and Dolphins, finishing with 176 carries and 860 yards. None of our backs have played an entire season as a lead back getting the lions share of carries. Adding some young talent to the pool makes sense. Improve the depth, and very likely, one of either Ahmed or Gaskin would be either released or traded.

To me, it sure seems like the Dolphins staff is committed to developing OG Liam Eichenberg. If it were up to Ken, we’d have already moved on from Eich, but even Ken knows we invested an early 2nd RD pick, in order to do so we traded up from #50 and traded an additional 2022 3rd pick to get to #42 to take the Notre Dame OL. It’s sensible to get something back on your investment if you truly see the potential there. He absolutely has not realized that potential as of yet, and RT Austin Jackson is certainly on his last chance, being 2024 would be the fifth year option for Jackson, a $14M + decision, in which Jackson would need a standout year to have the Dolphins pick up that 5th year option. To think the Dolphins may spend another 2nd RD pick on an OL is not folly. I don’t think anyone here would be disappointed if we went that direction. Once again, there are a couple of interior OL that could give Eich a run for his money in this draft. TCU OG Steve Avila is a massive lineman, 6’3.5, 332 lbs., who is very light on his feet for such a big guy. He’s also a team captain, leader of men, and could potentially be a day one starter. Many here feel we need to upgrade the O-line, Avila could remedy that. Another OL I’ve mentioned is OL John Michael Schmitz. He is widely considered to be the top interior lineman, specifically OC prospect. I know some people get bent out of shape when you say we could move C Connor Williams to OG, (where he played 4 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys) and have Schmitz at C. Williams is a very solid player who played every-single-snap last season at C. He struggled some with high snaps, but otherwise it was hard to criticize his play. Schmitz is a true C that could step in day one, and moving Connor Williams to LG gives us a strong left side, with Armstead at LT and Williams at LG.

There’s always different ways to look at things, and we may just end up being patient, see who falls to our spot at each draft pick, and end up with 4 players, or we might get aggressive and package a pick or two to get a player. I’d prefer the latter, as I feel if we’re going to draft players in the 2nd RD and 3rd RD, these players better be roster worthy and at least in my estimation, should have some impact, even in their rookie season. Keep in mind we drafted LB Channing Tindall last season who made zero impact last season, but we’ve also seen Grier trade up for players he wants as he did with OG Liam Eichenberg. Whatever they do, I just hope these players we draft make our team better not only in the future, but this year as well.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

The more I look at this year’s draft,
the more it seems to be rich in RBs of the exact type we would want.

This might be a really good year to get a young set of legs that fits McDaniel’s offense.

I would hate to pass up on getting one just because “our room is full.”

RBs are the most likely to succeed as rookies of any position group because they have the least to learn and benefit most from young legs vs. experience.

Both Wilson and Mostert got banged up last year,
and almost all RBs in the league did, too.

I mean they get hit hard every play they play, get gang tackled, and their knees and ankles get twisted and fallen upon etc. as part of what they do.

Even if they don’t carry the ball, they are asked to block guys who are from 25 to 100 pounds heavier.

Let’s get the next Alvin Kamara or Austin Ekeler and LFG.

      my sentiments exactly

We are just one or two players away from the Super Bowl.

We don’t need any more developmental projects.

We need a seam threat YAC TE and a one-cut sprinter @ RB.

We need them to make chunk plays this year.

We need a DT that can get QB pressure off the nose.

      That’s about it.

MOB LIST OF POTENTIAL TARGETS @ 51 (R2P20)

IOL: Steve Avila, John Michael Schmitz

  20. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ll say this about Luke Musgrave: he’s probably the closest resemblance to Mike Gesicki of all TEs in this Draft class. However, Gesicki was even faster, better VJ, better hands, wasn’t coming off a season-ending injury, and they both suck at blocking.

Gesicki is a seam-threat TE who had fewer snaps than Durham Smythe in the McDaniel Offense last season. He went to the Patsies* for a mere $4.5M this season (1-year deal)… he would have stayed with us for the same $$$.

Point: I do NOT believe we’re looking for a seam-threat TE who cannot block.

We have to remember, Sanders was a backup Edge at Alabama for 2 years. He transferred to Arkansas and was moved to ILB and excelled.

He has only played the position 1 YEAR! Just think when he really learns how to play the position.

In his first and only season playing ILB he had 103 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 3 FF, 1 INT and 5 PD’s.

He has special written all over him, IMO.

Arkansas also moved him around a bit. He has that versatility.

I could only imagine what he would turn into under Fangio.

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The difference between Gesicki and Musgrave is YAC. For reasons I never understood Gesicki could be arm tackled easily. Also his speed was straight line. And his signature move was the box out and high point.

I’m not very familiar with Musgrave but supposedly he has some wiggle to him as a runner and he runs routes where he can catch the ball in stride going toward the goal line.

The agent said the Dolphins were serious about trading for Darren Waller, who is a converted WR not an inline TE.

This was simply about poor performance, not opinion of the player. He was terrible for the brief time he was here. Would he have been better over a full 16 game season? From Barry Jackson

Since Don Shula wisely picked future three-time Pro Bowl guard Keith Sims with the 39th overall pick in the 1990 draft, the Dolphins have selected 17 guards or tackles in the second, third or fourth rounds.

Do you know how many of those 17 turned out to be very good players?

One: Current Dolphins right guard Robert Hunt, a second-round pick in 2020, and the book on his career is far from complete.

His reasoning why they should not pick an o-lineman in the 2nd or 3rd this year is they will miss, still need an o-lineman and miss out on other positions.

I tend to agree. They SUCK at drafting O-line.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem isn’t the players they’re selecting in those rounds, it’s the lack of development

OL is a tough position to transfer to in the NFL, you have to change their mindset, from being dominant due to more talented, to trying to be a technician

Year after year we see the large majority of OL rookies struggle, partly why inline TEs do too

Another reason we’ve struggled with drafted OL has been, because of the lack of patience

We always seem to be desperate on the OL

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

“Our NFL Wire editors made their selections for the first two rounds of the draft”

Who the F is Mike Masala of Dolphins Wire? This was his pick in the editors draft.

    51. Miami Dolphins: TE Sam LaPorta, Iowa (who is a 3rd round prospect on most boards)

With these players still on the board:
    EDGE Isaiah Foskey, Notre Dame
    RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama
    LB Drew Sanders, Arkansas
    DE/DT Bryan Bresee, Clemson
    DT Siaki Ika, Baylor
    DT Keeanu Benton, Wisconsin

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He’s pressing, reaching for a TE.
No need, the draft is deep in TEs this year.

To pass up Gibbs for LaPorta shows a lack of knowledge of our roster’s finer points.

And Bresee and Sanders have huge upside.
I bet Grier would not skip them for LaPorta.

Even Ika and Benton are better value @ 51.

Cav – Not sure about the record, stop, etc. with the ticket. You can do it with everything else on YouTube TV as far as I know.

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So what’s this YouTube stuff all about?

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

YouTube is selling the NFL Sunday Ticket for $249/$379 (with YoutubeTV subscription/without) until June 1. Or they will be. Sales link isn’t active yet.

  53. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Didn’t realize this about Xavian Howard’s contract..

“Howard has four years left on the extension he signed in 2022, but the Dolphins could walk away from the deal next offseason and save $14.5 million of cap space by releasing him with a post-June 1 designation, according to spotrac.com.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

IDK, that seems to say you get all that with youtube TV but it doesn’t mention the ala carte ticket.

On YouTube TV, members will have access to features like the brand new multiview as well as unlimited DVR storage, personalized recommendations, the ability to view key plays, NFL fantasy data, real time stats and hide spoilers,” Christian Oestlien, vice president of product management for YouTube TV and connected TV, said in a statement.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess we’ll find out. That also says the ala carte price without redzone is $349, not $379, so we have some conflicting info out there.

Like you said, it isn’t showing as available yet on youtube, so I guess we’ll find out soon. Either way, it’s here and you don’t have to order flipping directv for 2 years, woohoo, lol.

  54. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Playing Madden this year has got me so psyched for the season to start already. Our team is explosive. On both sides of the ball

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I started a trial of YouTube TV a couple of days ago. I did the basic, not 4K. I feel like the picture is choppy, not nearly as clear as DirecTV. Anyone have the 4K YouTube TV?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Haven’t seen either, but we probably won’t get the Sunday ticket in 4k even if you add on the 4k subscription.

The networks don’t broadcast in 4k, that is why Directv never broadcast the ticket in 4k. It’ll be the same for Youtube until the networks change the broadcast

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Found a little more on the DVR and playback stuff. Looks like it’ll only be available on Youtube TV. But you may get multi-view and ‘key plays’ available ala carte.

“Our teams have been hard at work building a great experience for fans as we inch closer to the 2023 NFL season. On YouTube TV, members will have access to features like the brand new multiview as well as unlimited DVR storage, personalized recommendations, the ability to view key plays, NFL Fantasy data, real time stats and hide spoilers.”

“And we’re also bringing some of these innovations to NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube Primetime Channels, such as key plays and multiview. Users who subscribe through Primetime Channels will see live NFL games featured prominently in their feeds, so they can quickly jump into the action on game days, directly on YouTube.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So I have to decide if I want to keep my NFL subscription during the season for $9.99 monthly to replay any game during the season, or if I want to switch to Youtube TV so I can record and playback during the broadcast.

I’ve really missed the last few years being able to rewatch a play or pause for a half hour to skip commercials in the middle of a broadcast.

      Decisions, decisions…lol

If you have a smart tv, you’ll be able to just stream directly from the tv. You’ll just create a free account on youtube and pay once for the ticket and be set up all season.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That sucks. It’d better not happen with the ticket. I’ve watched videos on youtube and I play music, but I’ve never watched any sports. I think they have been showing some NFL games on there though the last few years, if I’m not mistaken.

GREETINGS FROM TAMPA BAY where, surprisingly, the Lightning are just an afterthought while the Tampa Bay Rays dominate the sports pages!! The 10-0 Rays lead Boston 3-0 in the 5th inning of tonight’s game. 11-0, here we go!!

The Rays have out homered their opponents 26-4 so far this season. And the club’s cumulative ERA is 1.70!!! NO ONE predicted anything like THIS!!!

My rehab from left arm replacement surgery recovery has gone a bit slower than I anticipated. Looks like at least two more months of recovery and rehab. But I am one determined son-of-a-bitch. NO STOPPING ME NOW!! I expect to be fully recovered before my 77th birthday!!
    ————————-
Noticed that Miami’s over/under win total for the coming season remains 9 and 1/2 wins. NO ONE in Las Vegas seems overly impressed with Miami’s off-season so far. And that would include ME!!

The issue of the offensive line remains just that — an ISSUE!! IF Miami adds two solid O-Linemen through the draft, you could see “the number” rise to 10 wins from 9 and 1/2. But that seems unlikely, given this owner’s history with the franchise. Right now, the expectations of a stronger O-Line have gone unfulfilled. The position of Miami quarterback remains both a dangerous and unimproved problem.

As they say in France, “The more things change, the more they stay the same!!

It’s one thing to TALK about a good season coming up (as Dolphin fans well know).

I agree with some of this, based on our struggles last year starting with the SF game, but I think our D will be better, limiting our need to score every possession, allowing more rushing attempts, and causing the Tua stats, mostly passing yards to take a hit

Where the article is wrong is that Tua’s stats won’t dictate w/l, we’ll be a more balanced team

I remember one time, going to a conference with the ex in LA. He left a day before I did, always had to take a guitar because some of his friends also did, would get together and play. This particular year he wanted to take 2, regular acoustic and an acoustic bass. I was given the task of bringing one with me, in a case like a backpack. So here I am, walking through LAX with a guitar on my back, some guy stops me and asks, Are you anybody? I guess he thought in LA, I could be famous? WTF? 😂

Hogwash, if you’ve been there, you’ve been there

My son had about 20 states done by 5 years old, he had this map in his room, and his mother put a sticker on each state he’d been too, when I told him my grandparents had been to all 50, naturally he also wanted to

So we devised a plan to get the other 30 or so states, cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, then fly and drive to the rest, doing capitols along the way

His first trip east we didn’t do capitols, so later, after he was out of HS, his mother and I circled back and did some capitols we missed

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lakers last night almost blew their play-in game, with 1.4 seconds left they made a 3, to go up 3

Minn inbounded the ball for a corner 3, a foul was called giving them 3 free throws, sending the game to OT

The foul was retarded, they have this rule, that if you turn your back, and back up to the shooter, before he lands, and not giving him a landing spot its a foul, not exactly what happened last night

First basic of rebounding on the shooter is turn your back on him and box him out

So the NBA, like the NFL make these rules based on 1 guy getting hurt on a freak play

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think teams got good tape on us during the 5 game win streak and adjusted by hitting Hill and Waddle hard at the LOS to disrupt the timing and also to bruise them. They’re small guys and teams took shots at them even when the ball went elsewhere to slow them down.

I would hope the addition of Berrios helps with some of that as he can take it to the house if teams double both Hill and Waddle.

I also hope McDaniel schemes them some space and runs it more to take the pressure off them to win every game for us.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My thoughts as well, run more, and use Berrios when Hill and Waddle are bottled up

Berrios is going to be a tough cover in this O, expect he’ll get over 50 completions
