Dolphins fans have a lot to be excited about!!

A lot of things have happened last year, trades bringing in top tier talent like WR Tyreek Hill, DE/OLB Bradley Chubb, a few key FA signings, notably C/OG Connor Williams and LT Terron Armstead. With less than a handful of 2023 NFL Draft picks, the front office once again entered the trade market and acquired a huge piece for our defense, CB/S/LB Jalen Ramsey. There were a few FA signings, LB David Long formerly of the Tennessee Titans, S DeShon Elliott from the Detroit Lions, LB Malik Reed from the Steelers, TE Eric Saubert from the Broncos, WR Braxton Berrios and OG Dan Feeney from the Jets and more recently, we’ve signed a couple of OT’s, former 1st RD picks Isaiah Wynn from the Patriots, and Cedric Ogbuehi from the Jets. Besides player personnel, we also signed one of the defensive minds in the NFL, DC Vic Fangio.

I can’t remember a player added via trade that had an impact like Tyreek Hill. He was better than anyone could have hoped, he completely changed the offense, the game, everything. He’s a dynamic force that even when teams employ multiple personnel to try to contain him, is still able to impact the game. On the downside, Bradley Chubb was less, much less that advertised as a Dolphins defender last season. I think that changes significantly this season with Vic Fangio. I can’t wait to see Phillips and Chubb feast with Fangio running the D. Fangio, no doubt was behind acquiring Jalen Ramsey, who will deployed at multiple positions, but the key here is we have so much depth, with S Brandon Jones returning, and the addition of S DeShon Elliott so that Fangio can move guys around without missing a beat. The NFL is set up for parity, but our depth right now both on offense and defense is the best it’s been in a very long time.

Although we didn’t have a lot of picks in this year’s draft, that doesn’t mean we didn’t add valuable players, quite the contrary. Our first pick, CB Cam Smith will have opportunities to play this season. I can’t say he will be the starter outside Game 1, but I do believe he could be before the end of the season. He was a pick both for now, and definitely for the future. CB Xavien Howard is on the decline, and while he possesses excellent ball skills, we have seen his speed, mostly recovery speed diminish. I love that we re-signed AVG, and added Malik Reed and last year’s first pick (3rd RD pick) Channing Tindall will all be key depth guys to help rush the passer. Our depth is truly impressive, with starters DE Zach Sieler, NT Raekwon Davis and DE Christian Wilkins, and then the LB crew of Jaelan Phillips, David Long, Jerome Baker and Bradley Chubb, CB’s Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey, along with safeties Brandon Jones and Jevon Holland. There will be a lot of mixing and matching personnel. Now keep in mind, this is just the defense I’m talking about!

Like I said, having only 4 picks doesn’t mean we didn’t bring in impact players, and I think our second pick, RB De’Von Achane may provide a ton of excitement this season. He will get touches as a return man, both punts and kicks. He will see the field as a RB, and he will be a demon as a receiver out of the backfield. With Hill, Waddle, Berrios, Anderson, Cracraft and even draft pick Elijah Higgins, you simply can’t cover ALL-THAT-SPEED. A-Chain is going to be fun to watch. Now I didn’t mention QB Mike White as one of our FA acquisitions, but let’s face it, we were ridiculously unlucky with our QB’s last season. Tua’s fragility has been well documented, but how many times did our 2nd and 3rd string QB’s get hurt, and a few times in the same game. Mike White also got knocked out of action, but he was tossed around like a rag doll by Buffalo that one game. I expect him, if needed to be better than what we had last season in Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Skylar Thompson. White was impressive when given decent protection, and he played through some tough rib injuries. We all hope Tua remains unscathed the entire season, but I believe if we need Mike White for a game or two, he can deliver.

On special teams, we have new punter, Jake Bailey formerly of the Patriots. K Jason Sanders looks to have a bounce back season. Braxton Berrios, and draftee De’Von Achane will be the return men. With the excellent depth we have on our defense, and offense, our ST’s coverage should be much better than last season with all the injuries. It’s not crazy to expect both our offense and defense to both be top units, certainly top 10 or better. When was the last time you felt this way, and had legitimate conviction about it? So, be excited Dolphins fans, really, be excited! It’s OK, I know somewhere inside there’s that Dolphins Fan Reflex that makes it difficult to get hyped, but we have a very talented team, and I think we have the right coaches to get what we need from the deep roster. GET HYPED!!!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Same qualities I mentioned with Achane fast, quick and short, if you can’t get a hand on them you can’t cover them

We could see Achane moved out to WR like Tyreek was

Both have good hands, where they differ is in the vertical, Tyreek 40.5 vs 33

Sucks about Shell. I guess they feel ok with the free agent OT’s they already signed; Geron Christian, Cedric Ogbuehi, Isaiah Wynn and bringing back Kion Smith.

Along with Armstead, Jackson, Lamm, 7th rnd pick Hayes and UDFA Tunstall we have 9 OT’s on the roster. We only have 7 IOL on the roster.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So when Byron Jones comes off the roster, who will be added as player 90?

    A kicker? Another OL?

If it is OL, I think 2 candidates are OT George Fant and OG Dalton Risner.

5/30/23 UPDATE: Miami Dolphins Orange Jersey Award TRACKER; a big time defender joins the party!
    By Marek Brave@MBrave13 May 30, 2023, 3:40pm EDT

When Vic Fangio was hired to be Miami’s new defensive coordinator, many immediately predicted a big step up in production for third-year safety out of Oregon, Jevon Holland. Holland has shown flashes of brilliant play during his first two years in the National Football League, however, the 23-year-old is still waiting for his true breakout season in many people’s eyes.

    Will 2023 be that year?

If today’s orange jersey news is any indication as to how well Holland is performing in Fangio’s defensive scheme, then the answer should be a resounding YES!

Jevon Holland was awarded the orange jersey at today’s voluntary organized practice — an award that is given to the team’s best practice player from the previous session. In addition to being adorned in the brightly colored threads, the recipient is also allowed to pick the music that is played during that day’s session.

Holland is the second defensive player to receive the award this offseason — joining linebacker Duke Riley on the list. Jaylen Waddle and Salvon Ahmed are the Dolphins’ offensive players who have worn the orange top as well.

I don’t put too much stock into the orange jersey, it’s mostly a beauty pagent, for whatever message MM is sending out

I was hoping our D was goung to be like the No Name D, but not really a good comparison as we now have at least 3 major stars in Ramsey, X, Wilkins, with Phillips, Chubb, and Snowman ready to be passed the baton

In the end I want a great D, don’t care about individual greatness

Secondary should make the passrush better and hopefully vice versa

As good as I think our O will be, I think our D will be rated higher

    ——————
Hulkster, I’m surprised to hear this coming from you. No, Shell wasn’t like some kind of Pro-Bowl Tackle, but he was solid depth when Austin Jackson went down last season. He was PFF’s #13 rated run-blocking Tackle (not just Right Tackle, ALL Tackles), and fared far better than Jackson.

He’s part of the reason why both Mostert and Wilson had great YPC last season… plus he’s CHEAP!

I’m not going to cry over spilled milk, but the idea is to get better on the O-Line… and Shell did just that for us last season. I certainly hope Wynn can be that guy for us this year, but I’m not holding my breath, either.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think he is better than Jackson but I believe a used sponge is better than Jackson. I just don’t think Shell or Jackson is the answer to our pass protection problem

  17. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Seems as though Tackles David Bakhtiari and La’el Collins are possible cap-casualties who may be cut soon. Should that come to fruition, any takers?

Bakhtiari was PFF’s #12 overall Tackle last season
Collins was PFF’s #68 overall Tackle last season

Ever wonder why this coaching staff isn’t as worried about the OL as much as the media and fans?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, I REMEMBER the Adam Gase days! We didn’t want to invest in the O-Line because the ball was going to be out of the QB’s hand as fast as Tom Brady.

That’s when bubble-screens were all the rage, and they went for negative yardage.

Just remember that the KC Chefs* lost the Super Bowl because even the elite Pat Mahomes wasn’t protected… nor could they run the ball.

I don’t want to fall into false sense of security, as quickly as Tua gets the ball out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Adam Gase has nothing to do with it. How many bubble screens did we run last year per game? Maybe 3. That was Gase’s bread and butter. 12-15 per game. Stay current my friend.

How did we have 2 WRs combine for over 3,000 yards last year with no time to throw? Tua has been one of the least sacked QBs since he’s been in the league.

You skipped the Flores years and went back to 2018. Totally different roster.

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We gave up only 35 sacks last year in spite of being the first year in a new offense with a new Center and a new LT and a first year HC and multiple injuries on the OL and having to play a 3rd string 7th round rookie QB in several games.

Only 7 teams gave up fewer sacks and Buffalo played only 16 games.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    That’s 2 sacks a game.

I’d like it to be one or none,
but no team did that well.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Our offense gained 6197 yards for a stunning 6.1 yards per play. Our opponents averaged 5.3

We ran for 1686 which was a nice 4.3 ypc.
Opponents ran for 4.2 on 1751 yards.

We threw for a whopping 8.2 on 4765 passing yards.
Opponents only had 3992 passing yards for a 6.4 ave.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With our horrible pass D last year, we couldn’t get off the field, it skewed everything we did on both sides of the ball

As a result we didn’t run it as much as we should’ve, which we payed for later in the year, when our passing game slowed

In other words Fangios D should change everything, making things we did bad last year on O irrelevant, including stats

Another gash was running QBs, I don’t expect to see that again due to less man coverage

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

However, we scored 1 less FG and 1 less TD than our opponents.

    Why?
Interceptions. We threw 15; they only threw 8 to us.

We had a -7 TO ratio.

So we hired a TO centric DC.

For those who think it’s about beauty pageants…lol. Read the first sentence from MM. It was in reference to using 6 OTAs v 10, but it still applies….

“I think when you’re able to acknowledge players’ hard work, and they get positively reinforced with actual action, I think it goes a long way. They are afforded the less practices because they’ve earned it because of the way they’ve approached the whole offseason. My standards for preparation are pretty high and they have recognized that and really heeded to the expectation across the board. I think in those types of circumstances, everyone benefits with a little bone here or there.”

From Rookies to Vets, Newcomers Are Starting to Feel At Home in Miami
    Jun 01, 2023 at 10:00 AM

While the Miami Dolphins retained most of their key contributors from 2022, a host of new players, from rookies to veteran acquisitions, have settled into the team throughout OTAs and are already making their imprint on the 2023 Miami Dolphins.

Tight end Tyler Kroft and tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, two of the team’s more recent offseason additions, appear to be finding their feet in the locker room quickly. Kroft and Ogbuehi were both drafted by Cincinnati in 2015. Now, they’re back on the same team and share a sense of excitement for what the Dolphins can accomplish in 2023.

“They got something special going on here, and they have the pieces,” Ogbuehi said when asked about his decision to come to Miami. “I’m just here to add on to that and to go as far as we can.”

Now reunited with Ogbuehi, Kroft is looking forward to using his versatility as a blocker and pass-catcher in the Dolphins’ offense.

“I’ve always took pride in trying to be a three-down guy,” he said. “Excelling in the run game and the pass game. This is an offense that asks a lot out of the tight ends. It gives you an opportunity to do both which I really like.”

In addition to carving out his own role, Kroft is also helping ease the transition for rookie tight end Elijah Higgins, who is in the middle of his first offseason in the NFL.

“I’ve just been working on him because like you said, he’s playing a whole new position, it’s a new league,” Kroft said.

Achane has RB skills. He’s not Tyreek as a WR. He can be a threat as a receiver but they’re not the same skill set other than being fast.

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tyreek is much more acrobatic. Hill has a huge catch radius for a small man and can flip himself around in space. He has great acceleration and then long striding speed.

Achane sees more like a missile that can stop on a dime and get to top speed in 2 steps. Achane is better equipped to burrow through the slop and burst out then outrun the angles with hyper choppy little steps.

Thanks Son, but I am scheduled to start up a project out of town that week.

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

All I’m saying is I see them converting him from a RB to a WR or at least a primary receiving target as time goes on. Hill was RB in college and KC immediately started him in the passing game and then gradually transitioned him to full time WR.

I could be wrong. I often am. (unless women are in the argument!)

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You aren’t wrong now, and you are not wrong often.
(except about always being right in arguments with women)

      About Achane,
I don’t know enough about how he’ll do in the NFL
to know whether he can or needs to be moved to WR.

I just don’t want him to end up like Jakeem Grant,
although he seems to have much better hands anyway.

I want him to be like Darren Sproles or at least like James White was for NE in his best days … making heartbreaker plays to demoralize the Defense.

Achane is a full step faster than Sproles and also 2+ inches taller,
so that’s good. Achane’s not nearly as large as White, but he’s twice as fast.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ahhh you took that backwards Naples. When women are involved I find no matter the evidence I can produce, I am ALWAYS WRONG. LOL

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        That’s the same thing, Rock.
The mistake occurs before evidence, logic, etc. Is even attempted.
The mistake is defining the moment as a disagreement.
        Instead …
It can be viewed as if it were one of those sci fi alternate realities that you love to read … in which the physics and psychology of YOUR norm is irrelevant.

Then you can just enjoy it, as when watching a film in a theatre. You can’t control those actors either.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This s great … being in a virtual tie with last year’s Super Bowl team
      for best in the league.
But I disagree with several of his ratings.

Giving our QBs a 2.8 out of 4? too low
RB @ 1.9??? too low just off the speed
TE at .1 ??? jeeez … why not just give our guys a 0?
Do we really have the worst TE room in the NFL?
Still, he has us the 11th best offense in the league,
      even while scoffing at Tua.

On Defense he has our LB too high @ 3.5
and our Safeties too low @ 2.5,
but I can’t argue with the result, as I too think
we’ll be the #1 D in the league because of
Ramsey as a tool in a design by Fangio.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Naples, keep in mind that our edge rushers are considered LB’s too so that greatly increases their rating as a group.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Speaking of forethought, I have none when it comes to scheduling a vacation to meet the elected Fest date. See, our vacation request times are registered in December of the soon-to-come new year… as in, 6 months prior to our schedule coming out.

And that’s just another reason why it SUCKS to work for a Fortune 500 company with so many employees: it’s extraordinarily difficult for me to make it happen for the Fest.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Are there not enough employees to cover when you’re out on vacation? You’d think a huge company would be able to cover anyone’s vacation request. The Fest is almost always ion October, if you told them you’d like take vacation either the 3rd or 4th week in October, they couldn’t accommodate you?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I wish, my friend. There’s probably less than a handful of people who can cover for me and my rank, and I DO have 6 weeks of vacation per year.
