2023 Season – Game 8 – Patriots @ Dolphins

It’s been a crazy week, it seemed as if we may be heading into this huge divisional home game missing quite a few very important players. As it turns out, we may actually be getting back some extremely important players. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there is a chance we may see CB Jalen Ramsey get his first game action as a Miami Dolphin. It’s also possible that DB Nik Needham may see his first game action since his achilles tear in Week 6 of last season. Needham plays mostly inside at nickel, and always seems to rise to the occasion. WR Tyreek Hill, who injured his hip last week against Philadelphia was seemingly going to miss some time, but now appears to be ready to go against the Patriots. On the bad side of the ledger, it looks like we have lost OG Isaiah Wynn for the rest of the season. With Terron Armstead perpetually OUT, and Connor Williams questionable with a groin injury, that leaves the O-line paper thin. RB Raheem Mostert looks like he will play after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday Night’s game against the Eagles. The invisible rookie CB Cam Smith is now out with a foot injury and did not practice yesterday. One more to add, S Jevon Holland did log in a limited practice wearing the customary red jersey for those in concussion protocol. LB David Long Jr. appears to be fine and logged a full practice, which is good news.

With the Isaiah Wynn injury, and the aforementioned Terron Armstead OUT, the Dolphins O-line if Connor Williams can’t go will look like this . . .

LT Kendall Lamm – LG Lester Cotton – C Liam Eichenberg – RG Robert Hunt – RT Austin Jackson

OG Lester Cotton looked like he might have been close to winning the starting LG spot in training camp and preseason where he impressed. He did struggle some against Philadelphia’s big defensive line, but I expect him to be more prepared this week. Kendall Lamm looks passable at LT, but definitely not as good as Terron Armstead when healthy, whenever that actually occurs. Liam Eichenberg has had a difficult time, and while his snaps are accurate, more than starter Connor Williams, that’s the only positive to speak of. Back to safety for a moment, I had heard earlier in the week that DB Nik Needham might play Safety opposite S DeShon Elliott, but now it appears as if it will be Brandon Jones. It seems as if that situation is fluid and could change depending on the matchup. Hopefully, Holland can clear concussion protocol, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Let me address Jaelan Phillips, and clarify some things. I’m a Jaelan Phillips fan. I like the kid, he has the right work ethic, enthusiasm and physical ability to be a great player in the NFL. What I hated was all the hype he received before the season. I liken that to being on the cover of a Madden game. It’s a curse! As such, it has been a curse. Phillips is nowhere near a player being considered for DPOY, he was injured early, played ineffectively through that injury for 2 games before missing 3. After 7 games, Phillips has played in 4 games (starting 2) and has 20 tackles (11 solo), 1 TFL, 5 QB hits, and 1.5 sacks. His replacement, on the other hand has been far more effective, AVG or Andrew Van Ginkel. AVG has started 5 games, played in all 7, and 31 tackles (19 solo), 4 TFL’s, 9 QB hits, and 4 sacks. When folks gush about how great Phillips has been, sorry guys, but just not true. The stud has been AVG, not Jaelan Phillips. Now Phillips has plenty of time to be the stud we all hoped he could be, but up till now, as Larry David might say, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

It looks as if RB Raheem Mostert will likely have a large role this week. It’s odd, I haven’t seen anything about RB Jeff Wilson Jr. What will be interesting to see is who gets the touches when Mostert comes off the field. RB De’Von Achane will probably not see any action until after our BYE week, so Week 11. That leaves Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed, and rookie Chris Brooks. If it were my choice, I’d like to see more of Chris Brooks. Wilson is under contract in ’24 as well, but can definitely be a cap casualty with only a $700K dead cap hit. Brooks is not under contract for next season, he came in as a UDFA and is a bargain at $600K this season. Brooks and Wilson both are hard runners, but Chris Brooks will be 24 going on 25 while Wilson will be 28 going on 29 with a long injury history. Of course, Achane returning will mean less carries for everyone, including top back Raheem Mostert. Before Achane was injured, Mostert and Achane were basically splitting carries, and with great results.

If X is healthy enough to go Sunday, we may finally see the CB tandem we’ve only dreamed of, Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey. To be realistic though, Ramsey should be on a snap count, which will limit how many snaps he plays, so Eli Apple will probably see a fair amount of action, or possibly Kader Kohou. If Ramsey and Apple split time on the outside, Kohou and Needham may split snaps inside, where both are best suited. Both Kohou and Needham have done their best work inside. Ideally, we’d see Holland and Elliott at safety, but unfortunately, we might have to wait a week to see that quartet. If somehow Holland were to clear concussion protocol, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brandon Jones plays while Holland, who is so important to this team is given a rest this week.

At WR, River Cracraft has been designated to return from IR and has the customary 21 day period to be activated. If Hill is playing, and it appears as if he is, and WR Jaylen Waddle is able to go, he was dealing with a back injury in Sunday Night’s clash with the Eagles, it will probably be Hill, Waddle and Berrios. After that, Cedrick Wilson Jr. got some action and made the most of it, so I’d expect him to be active. It would be a toss-up between Robbie Chosen and Chase Claypool, I don’t expect the Dolphins to rush back Cracraft this week, but who really ever knows? Also, hopefully FB Alec Ingold is ok with his foot injury and create some room for whomever is carrying the football. I’d love to see the 3 pass rushers, Phillips – AVG – Chubb make a killing this weekend. You can include Wilkins, Sieler, Davis and any of the other defenders as well, but I’d love specifically for the trio to wreak some havoc on Mac Jones, and take over the game.

Wynn and Brooks might be so hurt that they are done for the year, but I hope not.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I think once we get Achane back, our offense does NOT go 3 and out or have slow starts like the last few games. The threat of his speed in a legit RB skill set opens up our entire offense.

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

So I am a little confused about who’s gonna be ready or not next week

In part bc we keep discussing in terms of who will be ready after the bye

But Holland should clear confusion protocol this week. X was a game day decision.

Armstead and Connor Williams might be back for KC

A lot of these guys that are injured are gonna play next week
    Then we get the BYE

I don’t think we are necessarily waiting for the ByE

  3. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Chiefs starting as early 2.5 point favorites

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

X should be back for next week’s game. Achane won’t be back until after the BYE. Williams should be back, he was on the gameday roster Sunday, he just didn’t play.

We have all heard of third world countries. Can someone name a second world country for me?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

From what I Learned as a history major:
First world countries: countries that existed pre 1914/WWI
Second world countries: Countries that came into existence between 1918 and 1939.
Third world countries: Countries that came into existence post WWII.

This of course has been bastardized and 3rd world countries generally now means less developed countries

“If he’s determined to be able to practice, he can start as early as Wednesday and even be activated before the game on Sunday.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

They should definitely activate him for the Chiefs game, that way when he gets injured, he’ll have the extra bye week to recover

Our best offensive lineman this year

How many of you predicted it?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He has been rock steady. The cost to re-sign him is going up every game, lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t know if I would have predicted, but he got drafted in the middle of the first round. For an OL that is at worst supposed to be long-term solid.

I have still not seen anything on Hunt’s injury status.

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    ▪ The Dolphins will be practicing this week in Germany, while the Chiefs will begin preparations in Kansas City.

Why did McDaniel decide to fly his team to Germany on Monday evening?

“There’s so many people that haven’t been to Germany and I kind of wanted to get settled and have a post-Tuesday – so Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – that was more routine as well as I didn’t want people – you have a player day off, why don’t you use that to see the sights as opposed to getting there late,” he said. “I was kind of nervous about people trying to cram in sightseeing.

“I think it provides an opportunity to go as a team, spend time together, spend the player day off together, and further cement some memories for us to hold on to as we progress on this journey with this team. That was kind of my thought process behind it. There’s some science stuff that I won’t bore you. Don’t call me on that because I can’t – it was like back from May or April when we made this decision, so I can’t really remember the science.”

    ▪ While the team is in Germany, McDaniel will encourage players to “do things together. There’s strength in numbers.”

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Another reason McDaniels is loved by the players. They are going to Munich and he is like “We’re going to frick’n Munich….. I want you guys to see more than the hotel and the practice facility.”

  14. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Yeah, I knew the coverage, I knew everything. I just made a bad throw really late. I didn’t really drive it. That’s what happens on that play, the guy either takes it and it’s a touchdown or the guy falls off and nothing happened.”

    — Mac Jones talking about the Ramsey pick and exhibiting the thinking process that Pats fans want in their QB. 🙂

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was nice to have a solid game in all 3 phases. We’ll need that to beat the Chiefs who have a better offense and defense than the Pets.

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Dolphins are flying out this afternoon to Germany to practice the entire week there. KC is preparing at home and going to fly in for the game. I hope the extra time getting used to the time change will make the difference!

#Dolphins Emmanuel Ogbah and #Eagles Derek Barnett are two names to watch

That would actually be good to shed his salary for the next few years , although I’m sure we would have to eat some , and hopefully get a decent pick in return

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

That would be good for Miami. Gonna need that $17M in cap space next year. And whatever they can recover of this years $17M.if they can get a bag of chips in draft picks that would be great…he’ll be a cut next season anyway.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We only owe Ogbah 4 mil in signing bonuses for the last 2 years of his contract, plus 2 mil this year.

If we traded him now, we would just have 2 mil dead cap in 2023 and clear $15,185,292 for 2023. Then we would have 4 mil dead cap in 2024 and clear $13,800,000 for 2024.

If we don’t trade him, we have an out clause for 2024. I see him as a release after the season possibly with a post June 1 designation. That way we clear $15,800,000 off our 2024 cap with 2 mil dead cap in 2024 and 2025.

Either way, I see this as his last season on the Dolphins.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Knowing that, it would be great to get SOMETHING, anything really, in trade. Swapping picks would be better than just letting him walk. Takes to to tango though, so unless they have someone on the hook already it’s not going to happen in the next 5 hours.

  75. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t have a real feel for this game. I think the Chiefs are the better team but not by a lot. Their defense is really good, better than ours. Mahomes is imo the best QB in the league and his connection with Kelce is unstoppable. That said they are not as explosive as they have been in years past. We need to be explosive, get out ahead of them and force them to keep up but that is a tall order against their D

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think if we can limit Kelsey, we can win this game. They have neglected the other weapons on the team. No real running game no real threat at wide receiver. If we can somehow take Kelsey out of the game it is ours for the taking. Blanket him with number five.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we can move the ball against their defense on consistent basis, the game comes down to our defense. The Chiefs are not that explosive on offense.

Having X and Holland back along with Ramsey could be the key.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Ramsey on Kelce is an advantage for KC. Ramsey will be at a disadvantage in terms of size and strength

Nah he’s an elite athlete with a lot of reach and he’s a good tackler. Kelce has slowed down and he relies on savvy route running. What does size and strength have to do with 7-8 yard routes exploiting zones in the middle of the field?

My viewing problem is solved. A bar tender I have known for years got my phone number from one of my buddies and called me to tell me that they are opening early Sunday morning and I am invited LOL. Drumming up business. She is smoking hot

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Can AVG help Baker cover Kelce? He might go too deep for Phillips. I want Phillips rushing the QB.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Against this Chiefs offense I rush 4, one spy on Mahomes kind of like RPO on offense, follow his eyes and movements and don’t commit to coverage until he throws the ball. You then have 6 or 7 in coverage and plenty of tacklers. The key against Mahomes is pressure and not allowing him to run around or run for 1st downs. That’s how he keeps drives alive. He’s not a great rhythm passer, he’s more sandlot like Roger Staubach or Fran Tarkenton. You can’t sell out blitzing or rush only three.

    Trick or Treat! 👻🎃

I am frozen! 🥶 Is trick or treating still a big thing everywhere? It is insane here. If the quantities were correct on the bags of candy I had, 1425 pieces of candy I gave out and I was finished in 1.5 hours. Of course gave several at a time but easily had 500 of the little and big kids.

I had 10 kids so far in my neighborhood. But we live in a cul de sac

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I live at the end of a dead end street. My sister and I sat outside, both of us giving out candy and there were times I was surrounded by big clumps of kids. It was CRAZY!

Must be that the kids fear me 😬

LMAO! in my Richard Pryer voice *look what you did to those kids, you BIG, GREEN, FUCK!*
    😆

I think I’m happy we didn’t make any moves prior to the trade deadline today. Yeah, Ogbah was ‘rumored’ to be traded… but WHAT IF we lose a stud EDGE or D-Lineman down the stretch? We have depth unlike any year I can recall over the last several decades.

We’re in it to win it this year, FAM!

  82. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Said it in the off-season this calendar year, reiterated it in the pre-season this calendar year, Barry Jackson wrote about it afterward, and I’m sticking to it…

Xavien Howard, Jerome Baker, and Emmanuel Ogbah won’t be with us in 2024. Why? We need the cap space vs their production.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Replace them with who?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to re-sign all these players and upgrade losses.

We’re a good team, enjoy the moment.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

        Tim,

There’s no way we can re-sign everyone. Tua will get a massive extension, Tyreek costs us a lot of money, Chubb, Howard, Armstead, Ramsey and Ogbah are making big money as well. We are going to lose players, no question.

  83. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Raiders fire HC Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler.

Wish they would have waited three weeks. McDaniels sucks as a HC.

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    LMAO @ Raiders

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Raiders are a mess as usual. This should make it easier for us to beat them though and F McDaniels anyway. Terrible coach.

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree with M13 and Tim. Glad Ogbah didn’t go anywhere. He is getting paid a lot as a sub but we needed his snaps when Phillips was down. We need him for our playoff run.

He will be gone next year. We need to resign AVG way more than we need to keep Ogbah and his big contract.

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

LT Terron Armstead (knee) will practice today after the team opened his 21-day window to come off of injured reserve, HC Mike McDaniel told reporters on Wednesday.

S Jevon Holland is out of the concussion protocol and will play Sunday against the Chiefs in Frankfurt, Germany, per McDaniel.

S Brandon Jones is in the concussion protocol and did not travel to Germany, per McDaniel.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Holland cleared concussion protocol.

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We beat the Patriots without LT1 LG1 C1 RG1 RB2 CB1 and S1.
That’s straight up badass coaching and GMing.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tua is not a free agent next year so he is not our top offseason priority to resign. We picked up his 5th year option at a cost of $23,171,000. I do see them resigning him on long term to a big contract that would clear a large chunk of his cap hit next year though.
