Miami Dolphins OTA’s

Ah, the offseason! The Miami Dolphins always win the offseason, we usually overspend and bring in top talent that other teams have developed. This season, however, is different! We’re not bringing in any overpriced talent (we have no cap room), but we have unquestionably brought in the best UDFA’s and our draft haul was outstanding! It’s that magical time of the year when the coaches and players are telling you how different everything is, how serious they are now, and just how unbelievable amazing the rookies are, both drafted and undrafted.

WR Jaylen Waddle was effusive and gushing about how good the young guys in the secondary looked, how hard they were making it to get open. Never mind that DB Jalen Ramsey will be traded at some point and you can add TE Jonnu Smith as one who will potentially be traded. I’ll admit that Jonnu was one of my favorite players last season, in a season when really I hated just about everyone on the team. He was one player that far exceeded expectations. There were a couple of other players that fall into that category, DL Calais Campbell and LT Terron Armstead. As you know, both of them are gone, Terron Armstead retired and Calais Campbell decided to play for the Arizona Cardinals where his career began. So basically, it’s possible that my 3 favorite players will all be off the team.

There are still guys on the team that I’m really pulling for. OLB Jaelan Phillips, my goodness, how can you NOT root for this guy? Last year after coming back from a grueling rehab from a torn achilles injury, he was finally getting into a groove and starting to feel normal in Game 4 and he was taken out by his own teammate while making a tackle, it was a helmet to his knee.. He finished the season with a torn ACL. Torn achilles, torn ACL in 2 consecutive years. Just brutal, but this kid is a workout warrior and has just absolutely unshakable resolve. I hope he can finally stay healthy and have a great season. The guy looks like Hercules, we can only hope that he can finally avoid a brutal season ending injury.

The players love the coaches, HC Mike McDaniel has figured everything out, although the players still run the team, and this is how Mike McDaniel wants it. We’ll probably never know why Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded, and to be fair, it doesn’t really matter because he’s been this guy his entire career. He’s a malcontent, and has been this at every NFL stop. He’ll be that at his next destination, wherever that might be. We know our compensation will be disproportionate to what he’s worth as a player, but we’ll have to take whatever it is. TE Jonnu Smith is a different story. Smith came from the Falcons where they have a super talented RB in Bijan Robinson who is a great rusher and an even better receiver. They also had former 1st RD pick (RD 1 #4) TE Kyle Pitts, who out targeted Smith 93 – 70, but they finished only 3 receptions apart, Pitts with 53-667 yards, 3 TD’s, and Smith with 50-582 yards, 3 TD’s. Jonnu was perfect for us last season. We became a short passing team because of our O-line deficiencies and Jonnu made the most of every time he touched the ball. For some perspective about his performance last season, WR Tyreek Hill was the only receiver that had more targets. Hill was targeted 123 times and finished with 81 receptions for 959 yards and 6 TD’s. Jonnu was targeted 111 times for 884 yards and 8 TD’s. Hills YPR was 11.8, Jonnu 10.0. Very small difference from one of the fastest WR’s in the NFL and a TE.

So, rejoice Dolphins fans, this is the time to enjoy the team, before the real games start and the roster is purged. Enthusiasm is running rampant, ride that wave, taste it, drink it in! It’s exciting! Our 5th RD draft picks will be among the league leaders, and our undrafted free agents just a nick below that! Our O-line will be amazing, and QB Tua Tagovailoa will take us to the Superbowl and be SB MVP! WR Tyreek Hill will have 2000 yards receiving, TE Julian Hill will just miss the Pro Bowl, OLB Jaelan Phillips will play the entire season and lead the team with 15 sacks. OG Jonah Savaiinaea will be considered for rookie of the year but will be a rookie All-Pro. It’s all coming together for us, I can’t wait!

    From the last blog;

    The coolest dream I ever had, and it was a reoccurring dream that I had multiple times over several dreams in one form or another was;

I was a wolf. Not a person that turned into a wolf, but just a plain old wolf, doing wolf kind of stuff. The most amazing thing about the dreams were how detailed they were. I could remember the feel of snow in my paws as I ran to take down a dear. the feel of wind ruffling my fur. I could FEEL the way my tail counter balanced my body as I made cuts and turns while running and I remember the thrill of hamstringing the dear I was chasing and the taste of hot blood in my mouth. I remember the feel of how breathing was different when running, like the act of running caused my breathing (as apposed to breathing while trying to run if that makes sense?) The loping action working like a bellows on my lungs.

The craziest part was I told my mom one time about the reoccurring dream and she got mad at me and called me a liar and said that I was stealing her story that I MUST have heard her talk about at some time in the past. We actually fought about it at some holiday dinner, because it absolutely was my dream and not a memory of her describing her dream, which I had no recollection of ever discussing with her.

SOOOOO REAL To the point I expected to wake up covered in blood like some werewolf movie!

I don’t care about anyone’s opinion on Tua. Durability from him and the running game is the key. We can’t allow defenses to dictate the game. If they play cover 2 and 3 carve them up with the running game and short and medium passing game.

I think we have the potential to be good on defense if the front seven is stout.

There are several QB’s I like next draft who may be there in the 2nd round. John Mateer who transferred to Oklahoma from Washington State is one of them. He is a serious running threat with a good arm and nice quick release.

Last year he completed 64.6% for 3139 yards, 29 TD’s to 7 INT’s and rushed for 826 yards with 15 TD’s in his first year starting.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I don’t care what other people say about Tua either. What I will never understand is how fans of the team make excuses for Tua all the time. When we play better teams, the drop-off in his play is so significant. If we played 20 games against better teams, there may be only 3-4 games where his play was anywhere near his level of play against lesser teams. He’s not to blame for losing all the games, but if your QB tanks, the team usually follows suit and you know that. In other words, if he can complete 70% of his passes and have nearly a 3:1 TD/INT ratio against lesser teams, it shouldn’t be less than a 60% completion percentage and less than a 2:1 TD/INT ratio. You need the most important player in the field to play competitively and keep you in the game. I know sometimes our defense sucks and we have drops ir whatever, but if the QB plays better, you always have a chance.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Correct Mike. It can’t be “the team” every time he can’t get it done. I can remember two games in his entire five year career where he put this team on his back and carried them to a win : 2020 against Arizona , and 2022 against Baltimore. People tend to leave out that in that game against the Ravens, Baltimore had every single starter in the secondary out due to injury.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ha! I never do Bri! I mention that every time, their entire starting secondary was out! 🤣

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tua Tagovailoa has a record of 2-13 in his last fifteen games against teams that finished with winning records. This includes a 6-14 record since 2022 against teams with winning records. In those games, his stats include 6.83 yards per attempt, 20 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, and a -.037 EPA/play. He’s also 7-14 in his career against winning teams, with a 60% completion rate, 4727 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I still think we need to draft an ILB next draft. Just not sure what type. One guy who caught my eye last year was Kyle Louis from Pitt. He’s a smaller LB. Looks like Pitt moved him around a bit and played him as a 4-3 OLB but he should be fine at 3-4 ILB. He’s quick, very good blitzer and very good in coverage.

    Last year he had 101 tackles, 16 TFL, 7 sacks, 1 FF, 4 int’s, 1 pick 6 and 3 PD’s.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I love that Tua is more decisive and aligning players up properly in practice and making reads all the while wearing a red jersey so no player on defense can make contact with him. I can see that definitely carrying him into the regular season until he gets hit for the first time and goes right back to releasing the ball in 2 seconds or less. 🙄

6 years, and he’s still parking on becoming a competent leader? Screw that. If you’re still working on it after 5 years…you ain’t a leader. That’s just ridiculous. Besides, weren’t we told he was already a great leader coming out of college? What happened to that being part of the reason for drafting him? What’s he working on?

I will say on Tua’s behalf, having to play Buffalo 2x a year with where their team is at would be tough on most guys’ overall records against good teams. That one I put a bit more on the team AND Tua. Still, not enough winning.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

      Mike E,

You are the very first person I’ve ever heard say that highways in PA are very well maintained. Don’t know what routes(s) you took, but it must have been freshly done.

It’s not just me saying it, but PA roads and highways are consistently ranked as the very worst in the nation… and have been for decades. We’re unofficially known as the pothole state.

OK, that makes sense to me now. It’s been a minute since I’ve driven on any turnpikes in PA (I always take short-cut routes), but I have heard that some of our turnpikes are finally being cleaned up… at taxpayers’ gross expense, of course.

Our taxes keep going up for the roads with literally negative (worse) results. Somebody has been lining their pockets in Harrisburg (our state capitol) for a very long time and nearly every single Pennsylvanian is FED UP with the racket BS!!!

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I probably shouldn’t broadcast this, but it was rainy and I was driving a Chrysler Pacifica minivan and some parts closer to Pittsburgh were very curvy. Road was great though, you can see it was either done not too long ago or just very well maintained and we were going 90+ . We hit some legit deluges on Friday heading there. While the Turnpike wad great, we were on some treacherous roads during those downpours that couldn’t handle the volume of water and there was flooding and too many potholes and ruts

Bills only have 2m in cap with 87 players under contract and a contract still pending after picking up free agent DT Marcus Harris, so actually less than 2m in cap.

It’s nice to here other teams having these problems with key players and not just us, especially in the AFCE.

Ah, yes. It’s been that way for quite some time, man. You can still see the basics of the contract, though. For instance, Jaire was playing on a 4-year $84M contract with a $30M signing bonus before the Pack cut him.

It does the same for all of a player’s contracts, which in Jaire’s case, is only one prior contract: his rookie deal.

I almost went out to get a PS5 last year just to play Madden, but I never got around to it. To be honest, I actually miss playing, but I get so busy with so many projects it’s difficult to make time to play.

It’s almost like me attending a Fest: I REALLY want to GO(!!!), but dammit it’s difficult to make time and my vaca time must be put in many moons in advance. By the time our Phins’ schedule is released, my vaca time is already locked-n-loaded.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Maybe. I’m a playstation 5 guy. I still play Madden 23 because our roster was so great “on paper” with no injuries. I only like playing the Dolphins so if they suck, I won’t play Madden. I prefer Madden ’23 over Madden ’24 because it’s much easier to be competitive when playing the Dolphins. (read UNSTOPPABLE in ’23, I can beat anyone H2H) —’24 not so much. the hate on Tua is sad, sure I give him shit from time to time too, we surely forget the years we sucked before him

I’d like to win an SB, its not all or nothing for me though

the in the playoff years are much better than the 1-15, 3-13 years

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not quite sure if there’s a QB that’s as much Jekyll and Hyde as Tua is. He can put up astounding numbers against lesser teams, but then when he plays against teams with a winning record, his stats go in the toilet.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

its the MM soft team, that hides when they play good teams

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

makes sense, running QBs adjust faster to the NFL, but don’t think its unlikely someone coaches Ewers

I wouldn’t do it for that reason, and Gabriel isn’t an NFL QB, especially if Cleveland cuts him

Pickett would be my odd man out, without Flacco its all downhill, I’d say the same with him, but he’s proven that wrong

I really am starting to sour on the NFL. I’m sick of so many players wanting a new contract after one good year and holding out. And I don’t put it all on the players. It’s the way the whole NFL economic system is built, you can’t fault the players for playing the game that is in front of them. Teams have their own way of breaking contracts too. It’s fake contracts on both sides. I don’t know why they even bother calling them contracts. It just gets worse and worse every year. The other leagues don’t seem to have this problem.

The Dolphins kicked off mandatory minicamp today As previously reported, no Jalen Ramsey or Jonnu Smith Zach Sieler was here and participated in practice

Possibly the biggest surprise was Tyreek Hill catching passes during position drills — the first time since wrist surgery earlier this offseason No team drills for Hill but it’s a positive development

Orange jersey for TE Tanner Conner — looks like he’s taking advantage of his opportunities with Jonnu Smith absent

Dante Trader pick six off Zach Wilson and Elijah Campbell pick six off Quinn Ewers (tipped pass off WR’s hands) in 7-on-7 Dolphins backup QBs haven’t necessarily been impressive dating back to OTAs, but it’s still pretty early in the process

Last play of the day, a 50-yard TD that Tua dropped in a bucket to Malik Washington with Jason Marshall in coverage during 11 on 11 work. Couldn’t have been more accurate if he walked up and handed the bottom

No Jonnu Smith or Jalen Ramsey at Dolphins minicamp, per Mike McDaniel

Thank you. I’m just not sure how an NFL QB can prevent hits or impacts to his hips. It’s not a question of if it’s gonna happen but when. So what then? Does that mean he will be out if he takes a shot to his hip? If I’m a defender I know what I’m targeting. What’s actually wrong with it would be my question.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You’re welcome, ALWAYS. I’m sure the team knows exactly what’s wrong and for obvious reasons, won’t advertise. That’s why it’s so very important to have a legit backup QB in our situation.

I don’t think Zach Wilson has what it takes, I think Ewers is a project in the here and now, and I think our season is over if Tua misses much time this coming season.

Even if we end up with the Tua-clone Dillon Gabriel (who I really wanted us to draft), he’s a rook. He might be our best option at this point, but he’s not going to take us too far in his rookie season, I’m sure.

  62. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT, I’d be willing to bring Jaire Alexander into the fold. Nobody was willing to trade for him and his steep contract, he’s got an injury history, so he doesn’t have the cards to make an outrageous demand.

I would definitely kick the tires on him, give him a private workout to see if he’s healed, and if all goes well, offer him a reasonable 2-year ‘prove it’ deal.

Now if we fail to kick the tires on Jaire and just wait for ASJ’s medical recheck in July… and ASJ fails his medical, Jaire will likely already be off the market.

In an ideal world, we can come away with a healthy one of the two of them… and without giving them outrageous contracts.

I know, I know… but what about Jonnu and Sieler? I believe we can still get creative with our cap and make it work for everybody. For instance, ‘Reek isn’t going to be with us next season. We’ll have $$$ to play with if we structure everything right.

    That’s just my $.02.

I never thought I would hear Mike McDaniel say something like this, but he did today, when asked about lengthy Jalen Ramsey trade process: “I don’t give a shit about what I feel.”

What strikes me is that, of all coaches I’ve met, McDaniel always seemed to be the one who did care about feelings.

Hard to dissect but my gut feeling is he’s frustrated by some things. And feeling sense of urgency to facilitate much-discussed change of culture, along with playoff win/s. A lot to digest IMO.

    A few things from Ryder:

NWI had 3 red zone TD’s today, 2 of them were high throws where he went up and got them.

Wright, Mattison and Gordon each had good red zone TD runs from 6-8 yards out.

All the RB’s had a good day and all of them also caught RZ TD’s. Achane’s TD catch was a leaping catch over LB Willie Gay. Achane would have had another 50 TD rec after beating LB Dodson but Tua just overthrew him.

Reports are that Achane has taken his route running to another level.

It’s not clear who gave up the long TD to Washington. One reported it was Jason Marshall but Travis Wingfield reported it was Artie Burns.

Storm Duck and Kohou both had good days. Says CB’s were working on disrupting routes in press.

Traders pick 6 came on an overthrown ball by Wilson. Trader was playing single high on that play.

Isaiah Johnson’s pick came on a 50/50 ball, taking advantage of his height/length. Didn’t say who the WR was.

Colbert also almost had a pick on Tua but, like Bonner, dropped it.

Ryder thinks Dolphins should stay away from Jaire Alexander. Not only will he want to get paid with a big injury history, Ryder says he has heard from packers fans that he could be a locker room distraction. They said the coaches were done with him. Sounds like a Ramsey situation.

Chop, KJ Britt and Murphy had sacks. Murphy beat PP for his. The next play PP stonewalled him. Said it was a good battle to watch. Murphy has stood out every practice the media has attended.

Nothing on trench play really. Need to wait for the pads to come on.

ALL I’m sayin’ is to kick his tires, nothing more. We don’t know what we don’t know if we don’t turn over every stone. And if we don’t turn over every stone, Grier isn’t doing his due diligence, IMO.

    Day 2

minicamp is in the books. Willie Gay was my standout performer today. What was already a good day with tight coverage, effective rushes and run defense was capped with a pick six off Zach Wilson.

It was a good day for the linebackers in general. Jordyn Brooks stayed in phase with Tanner Conner on a coverage rep 30 yards down the field and brought his usual juice/anticipation to the run D. KJ Britt had a nice diagnosis-and-go TFL at one point.

Storm Duck had a PBU on a ball from Tua to Waddle – he’s been around the ball all spring. So has Isaiah Johnson – he almost got another diving pick today. Iffy did snag a pick on a high throw from Tua. Ball was so off the mark I imagine it was a miscommunication with the WR.

Waddle continues to catch a million passes from Tua, and Achane continues to makes plays from all over the offensive formation. I thought the OL kind of got what they wanted early. Achane had a big run off the right side and Jaylen Wright might’ve had a long TD in live football – he got a good lane from Paul and Jonah (thought Jonah was excellent today) and hit a wicked cut back to find that lane.

BJ Adams had his daily physically dominant rep where he shuts the route down early. Artie Burns had a good play in coverage after a strong re-route.

Tyreek ran routes and caught passes with a helmet on throughout the practice. That’s all I’ve got for here – for more, check out the Drive Time podcast posting later tonight.

I’d really like to know if Tua is going to put on his playing weight of ’23. Remember, everybody wanted him to shed weight for ’24 so he could run around like a mobile QB and get another concussion.

My advice? Put that weight back on, young man. I mean, he was 100% healthy for the entire ’23 season (and ONLY season he was 100% healthy in the NFL)… that’s not a coincidence.

We really don’t need a mobile QB with the arsenal we have on Offense. We had a record-setting Offense in ’23 WITHOUT having said ‘mobile QB’. And if it wasn’t for many key injuries, we could have gone WAY farther in the ’23 playoffs.

And one could talk about our loss at KC in the Wildcard round of ’23 as a disaster until they’re blue in the face… fact is many fans in attendance suffered frostbite as a result. It was one of the coldest games in NFL history, PERIOD. I think even if we were 100% healthy, we’d have still lost that game due to the elements against a team that was at least ‘somewhat’ acclimated to the conditions.

Zach Wilson explains for the first time in his life he’s hearing he’s late on some throws

I want to provide a more complete and precise quote on this here from Zach Wilson: “It’s crazy because I’ve never been told before at past places like, ‘Hey, you’re late.’ Even with a strong arm it’s not like, ‘Hey, you’re late on this throw.’ But here, it’s an entire step above and for good reason. Here, they want that ball out before our guys are getting to their land marks. We have so much speed. You’re anticipating. I have to trust this receiver is going to be there. And they do a great job teaching it. And helping us understand that’s how the offense is run. The focus is to not care much about the result. Every day my mindset is shifting to just playing with conviction and letting it rip.”

    ———-

It’s the WCO, man. It’s something that relies on timing, precision passing, and excellent route-running.

It’s not for every QB, to be sure. I never once saw ‘it’ with Zach Wilson, but I guess Coach McD sees it with Wilson for whatever reason.

Dillon Gabriel is quite literally the PERFECT QB for us right now in this system, in terms of a rook already understanding it all. IMO, he’d supplant Zach Wilson in a few week’s time, but that’s not saying much.

We need somebody who can INSTANTLY start should Tua go down again. That’s not Zach Wilson, that’s not Dillon Gabriel (though Gabriel > Wilson in this system, IMO), and it’s certainly not Quinn Ewers this season.

I feel like once again, we didn’t adequately address the backup QB position. We should have signed Marcus Mariota (who wasn’t nearly as expensive as Wilson), who at least knows the WCO.

I think this is a big reason they are moving on from Ramsey and why they didn’t seem to try and resign Holland or some others.
