Wedge Scouting Report: Danny Shelton

DannyShelton4Wedge ID

Don’t get so too close to the Shelton Joe Philbin!!!  Purportedly, the Dolphins have shown real interest in Washington Defensive Tackle Danny Shelton.  So much so Senior Bowl security had to ask Coach Philbin to step back.  Well, truth is the Dolphins are not the only team intrigued with Shelton.

Danny Shelton3

Why the fascination with the 340 pound behemoth that can move mountains with a powerful bull rush?  Well because he is a 340 pound behemoth who can move mountains with a powerful bull rush!  (sigh) You Earthlings are so slow…

Danny Shelton

Given his siz,e its no surprise that people are comparing Shelton to Vince Wilfork and Haloti Ngata.  Get excited – this is the guy that can be the centerpiece for some one’s defense for a decade.  An elite run stuffer!  A guy who you just can’t move.  Do you hear that?  That is the sound of Danny Shelton eating an offensive line…..offensive line so tasty.

DannyShelton5

But is he more than just an immovable force?   In his Senior Year at Washington Shelton had 9 sacks.  Word has it – his moves are pretty much limited to a bull rush.  He just overpowers the interior offensive line.  Get out of my way!!!  I’m Danny Shelton and I am going to crush Tom Brady’s spine!  Um…I just imagine that is what he would say…dare to dream…

NCAA FOOTBALL, GEORGIA STATE AT WASHINGTON

Shelton shows impressive quickness and agility for a guy his size.  In fact Shelton is a member of the Huskies track team.  No, don’t worry, he is not a pole vaulter.  He competes in the discuss throw and shot put, another tribute to his incredible strength.

IDAHO STATE at no.17 WASHINGTON

There are no guarantees that Shelton is a great pass rusher at the NFL level.  But run stuffer?  Most scouts seem to think if you draft Shelton, you can get a decade of run stuffing from this reliable space eater.  If I was going to compare Danny Shelton to an Alien Weapon of Destruction I would compare him to a The Great Black Hole of Xvorkkia Nebulas 4.  Go ahead try to go into the black hole – no one will ever see you again!

    Randy,

I typed (and I thought posted) this earlier, but my machine crashed so I guess it didn’t post. I read your response on Shelton this AM, and I think it’s totally reasonable. I’m a bit hypersensitive when I think someone’s picking on the Pac-12, so take it with a grain of salt.

I should have led yesterday with: “good to see you!” because it is. Glad you found the new blog. Cheers!

Keith Sims is still competing, and winning. He always seems like a great guy, but have to give him credit for this one. Imagine how much shiot he is gonna get from his old teammates for not just doing this but bragging to a reporter about it.

    Ken,
I’m staying as far away from the pickle jar discussion as possible. I’m pretty sure it started with an FFR story/picture/anecdote, and that’s pretty much a red flag right there. 😛

Man…between Jordan Phillips and Malcom Brown, you’ve got potential 1 Tech DT/NTs with some really good B-gap to B-gap influence.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wyoming…….know little about either, but do we need a 1-gap player? Not that it doesn’t sound like either wouldn’t step in nicely, but will other teams get more value from them?

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Both are big and would keep the OL off the LB’s
If you want more than that Randy will have to fill you in! 😉
I just know we need some MEAT in the middle!

Hell lets get 2 NT that way Vernon and Wake don’t have to see an OL just TE?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not a bad plan. Looking at 3-4 versus 4-3 DT value, but then the league sorta figured out that we were weak in the middle after Big Paul left. Took them a while, but they did. No disputing that.

And we have good edge rushers times three coming off the end.

Not so sure on Beli smiling, especially cause it is “during the game.”
Won’t guess on the Lynch crotch grab either….he might have been talked about Disney World by his agent.
I’d take the over 3 on ball inflation being mentioned, but then maybe GODell has already put the fix in on that one.
    —————————————
    1. How many times will “deflated” balls be mentioned during the game?
    Over 3 (-150)
    Under 3 (+110)

    2. Will Marshawn Lynch grab his crotch after scoring a TD in the game?
    Yes (+200)
    No (-300)

    3. Will Bill Belichick smile during the game on camera?
    Yes (+130)
    No (-170)

I don’t know about anyone else, but I wouldn’t touch Jordan Phillips with a ten foot poll. At least not in the first couple rounds.

    This is from October 2013:
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Phillips would miss the rest of the year as well thanks to a chronic back issue. “It isn’t one specific injury,” Stoops said on Monday. “It’s bothered him for the last couple years and is not improving like they [the doctors] want it to.” Phillips will undergo surgery on his back.

My #1 red flag on any player is when the word chronic comes up when describing a health issue. …Especially when dealing with backs or knees. Even if he was OK for 2014, it’s just something I would stay away from early in the draft.

ANYONE UP FOR some Hall-of-Fame speculation?? – – The inductees for 2015 will be announced tonight, I believe. –No more than 5 modern era candidates can be elected by the 46 members of the selection committee. Voters will also consider the merits of senior candidate Mick Tinglehoff and contributor candidates Ron Wolf and Bill Polian. All must receive at least 80% of the vote to be enshrined.

FWIW, the favorites are Junior Seau, Orlando Pace, Tim Brown, Charles Haley, Will Shields and Jerome Bettis. If I had a ballot, I’d vote for the following: Jerome Bettis, an ultra-bruiser who, I believe, is either #6 or #7 all time in yards gained rushing. Think of Larry Csonka with about 5,000 more yards gained rushing! –My 2nd vote would go to Marvin Harrison who, in 2002, made 143 receptions, by far the top number in NFL history. His 14,580 yards receiving, 128 touchdowns and 1102 regular season receptions should be well more than enough to gain entry into the Hall. –My 3rd vote would go to Tim Brown (a near lock on this ballot). Brown’s 14,934 yards receiving and 100 TD’s are similar to those of Harrison. But Brown needed 16 seasons to compile those numbers while Harrison needed only 13. My 4th vote would be for Junior Seau (pronounced “Say Ow!!), a truly dominant linebacker for the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots. –My 5th and final vote would go to an “off-the-wall” candidate. kicker Morten Andersen, the NFL’s All-Time leading scorer who played in more games than any other player in NFL history. The numbers for Jan Stenerud (the ONLY pure placekicker in the HOF) are dwarfed by Andersen’s achievements. –Generally, I DON’T believe kickers belong in the Hall. –But Andersen has set a standard for all who may follow him. If Andersen doesn’t belong in the HOF, then Stenerud doesn’t, either. Right now, I’d say Morten Andersen is the greatest placekicker in NFL history.
    ————–
Three other nominees nearly got my vote: Charles Haley, Will Shields and Kurt Warner. -DON’T be surprised if Haley and Shields get elected. As for senior candidate Mick Tinglehoff, my lasting memory of him is Manny Fernandez manhandling him in SB VIII just as he manhandled Washington’s center Len Hauss in SB VII. So a big NO for Tinglehoff!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Can’t argue with any of that. And I know you said who you would vote for rather than who will get in…….but I’m thinking Junior is a lock. A guy like Warner might have to wait a year, even if I think he’ll get in, but Seau has the respect for the tragically passed factor in play. Plus he deserves it anyhow.

A Massachusetts man faces multiple charges after allegedly shooting cars left in parking spots that had been shoveled of snow, days after two feet of snow blanketed the town.

“During the course of the investigation the fact came up that he was observed yelling and banging on doors in the neighborhood about vehicles parked out in the street,” said Lt. Ronald Furtado, of the Fall River Police Department

Furtado said it’s reasonable to believe that Osorio had shoveled the parking spaces that were then occupied.

  21. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: In this era when the Super Bowl is overhyped, it is worthwhile to note that Warner holds the record for most yards passing in a Super Bowl (414 Yards, or something like that in the thriller vs. McNair and the Titans which went down to the LAST PLAY!!). Warner’s numbers are well short of Favre and Marino. But when he played, he was truly a great quarterback. TOO BAD a few coaches chose to sit Warner rather than give him a chance—certainly NOT his fault.

  22. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My two cents, sure Seattle Fd up, but I don’t think they should’ve gone with Lynch, just a safer one yard pass. To sum up the final play, the Seahawks WR committed offensive PI, blocking (pick) while the ball was still in the air, the pat defender who got the Int went through the Seahawk WR that should’ve been PI. So the game between the two most cheating teams in NFL history was decided on a play where both teams cheated, and the cheating refs stood by and just let it play out.

It should’ve been offsetting down over.

pats sure got their normal couple of calls when trailing late, the first was the hit out of bounds, terrible call, the non PI where the pats defender on purpose hit the WRs leg tripping him (Seahawks led by 10 in the 4th at the time), then the final Seahawks offensive play of the game.
