Wedge Scouting Report: Danny Shelton

DannyShelton4Wedge ID

Don’t get so too close to the Shelton Joe Philbin!!!  Purportedly, the Dolphins have shown real interest in Washington Defensive Tackle Danny Shelton.  So much so Senior Bowl security had to ask Coach Philbin to step back.  Well, truth is the Dolphins are not the only team intrigued with Shelton.

Danny Shelton3

Why the fascination with the 340 pound behemoth that can move mountains with a powerful bull rush?  Well because he is a 340 pound behemoth who can move mountains with a powerful bull rush!  (sigh) You Earthlings are so slow…

Danny Shelton

Given his siz,e its no surprise that people are comparing Shelton to Vince Wilfork and Haloti Ngata.  Get excited – this is the guy that can be the centerpiece for some one’s defense for a decade.  An elite run stuffer!  A guy who you just can’t move.  Do you hear that?  That is the sound of Danny Shelton eating an offensive line…..offensive line so tasty.

DannyShelton5

But is he more than just an immovable force?   In his Senior Year at Washington Shelton had 9 sacks.  Word has it – his moves are pretty much limited to a bull rush.  He just overpowers the interior offensive line.  Get out of my way!!!  I’m Danny Shelton and I am going to crush Tom Brady’s spine!  Um…I just imagine that is what he would say…dare to dream…

NCAA FOOTBALL, GEORGIA STATE AT WASHINGTON

Shelton shows impressive quickness and agility for a guy his size.  In fact Shelton is a member of the Huskies track team.  No, don’t worry, he is not a pole vaulter.  He competes in the discuss throw and shot put, another tribute to his incredible strength.

IDAHO STATE at no.17 WASHINGTON

There are no guarantees that Shelton is a great pass rusher at the NFL level.  But run stuffer?  Most scouts seem to think if you draft Shelton, you can get a decade of run stuffing from this reliable space eater.  If I was going to compare Danny Shelton to an Alien Weapon of Destruction I would compare him to a The Great Black Hole of Xvorkkia Nebulas 4.  Go ahead try to go into the black hole – no one will ever see you again!

That people are comparing Shelton to Vince Wilfork and Haloti Ngata. If he is as good of either I’d be willing to give up our entire draft. The draft isn’t a exact science and many 1st rounders never pan out.

  3. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Didn’t realize this and don’t remember reading it here so excuse me if this was already posted but just found out the officials blew the call in the Colts/Pats game where Solder caught the pass for the td and there should have actually have been a penalty on that play on New England.
Solder had reported as an eligible receiver on the previous play but did not re-report as eligible for that play, which you have to do for EVERY play according to the rules.
So, the play was an illegal play and should have been called back as such.
Seems the refs blow a lot of plays when the Pats play.

  4. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

If he fell and we took him I’d be ok with it but then again if he fell to 14 you’d have to ask WHY

  5. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I don’t think Shelton could play 8 games in Miami.

  6. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Maybe Wallace’s problem is he came to Miami chasing the money and realized it’s not all about the money and is more concerned with being on a playoff team and Super Bowl contender. Naw. That’s not it.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Chased money and is set in his ways…..doesn’t have that reality check in the same room like he had with Hines Ward. Ward was that reality check for Santonio Holmes also.

  7. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I like Shelton, but I’d take Jordan Phillips over him 10 times out of 10.

  9. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

If the Miami Dolphins sign either Adrian Peterson or Suh do they become:

    (a) Playoff Team?
    (b)Super Bowl Contender?

  10. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I’m not watching the Super Bowl but I am going to record it and if the Seahawks win it I’m going to watch the fourth qtr. Unless it’s a blow out then I’ll watch the whole thing so I can see Tommy Boy crying on the sidelines.

  11. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

You would think that a team that has as little cap space as this one would have more talent on it and would have been a perennial playoff contender but how in the fuck do you have the little bit of money to spend on players and be this bad?
Who’s the idiot that gave this kind of money to players that we’re getting nothing out of?

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Seriously, when you look at the cap situation with this team the Fins really aren’t getting the best ROI for the money they’re spending. I wouldn’t want them handling my finances.

ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT Senor Swine!! —IF Phillips is 10 times better than Shelton all I have to say is “I’ll believe it when he SHOWS ME!”–Until then, Shelton fills Miami’s greatest need on the field and should be taken if available at R1P14.

BTW, Miami’s two greatest needs are #1) a new owner and #2) a new head coach. TALKING about the draft is a nice thing to do. But until this franchise plugs its two greatest needs, any talk about getting to the Super Bowl is just that – – – TALK!!!

September 12, 2015 is already marked on my calendar. MISS GIGI’s Miami Hurricanes visit Schnellenberger Field in Boca Raton to play my beloved FAU Owls the second week of the 2015 college football season. –Now I know GIGI is NO FAN of Al Golden, UM’s less-than-successful head coach. My OWLS can do Miss Gigi a HUGE favor by upsetting the ‘Canes, thus speeding up Golden’s departure from Coral Gables!!! –BET YOUR ASS I will be there to see if the 3-touchdown underdog Owls can spring the biggest upset since their win over #20 Hawaii several years ago out in Honolulu. Given FAU’s losses through graduation of ace DB’s D’Joun Smith (projected 3rd round pick in the draft) and Damian Parms, an upset seems like a pipedream.–But one never knows when a Golden-coached team will lay an egg, so who really knows??

72 degrees and sunny is the forecast for Tampa Bay today!! –Magnificent!! –Talk to you folks after work tonight!

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I wouldn’t say Phillips is 10 times greater than Shelton but I also agree with Dbolt on the Phillips pick. I would rather see us trade down into the 20’s and get a couple more picks because of the depth of this draft.
I wouldn’t give so much of a shit if Jeffro was still running the show because he’d pick Dupree in the first but with Hickey making the decisions I think he could do something similar to what the Seahawks have done and get some quality players who can help the team even into the 5th rd. He got Fede in the 7th and McCain and Anthony Johnson as well plus Damien Williams.
however, no matter who he takes in the first I’ll be on board with it because there is no doubt in my mind he’s a superior talent evaluator compared to Jeffro.
I think Hickey can probably trade down in the first far enough to get another 2nd and a couple later picks and then can trade down again in the 2nd to get a couple more picks.
There’s too much talent to just go with what we’re given in the 7 rounds of this draft.
We’re not going to get all starters with more picks but we’ve got to elevate the level of talent on this team from top to bottom. Otherwise, it won’t matter who the coach is. Nobody will win more games with the players this team has right now.

  14. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I’m with OD on one thing. I have adopted the “when I see it” approach. I thought this team had made some significant improvements last season and was looking for a better result and it doesn’t matter to me what they do in FA or the draft this year, how players look in camp, how they look in preseason and how they look in the first half of the season. When they make it thru the entire season and look convincing then I’ll say they look good. Until then, they haven’t proved a thing.

  15. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Lou,
Looking at ROID in regards to the cap we are getting great returns on our starting QB&HB. Our draft class this past season along with those UDFA’s. Albert was on pace to be our best FA signing in years. That said our WR core outside Landry, LB core, and secondary has had poor returns thus far along with the DT spot.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Nice job Piggy – I’ll take Shelton. He’ll go fro 343 to 323 in the heat of FLA. We need a big guy in the middle, and he’s a good, strong player. No one on our roster right now can do what he does, so, yeah, we need him, or someone like him.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You guys crack me up. Like Mike Wallace is the first player to take the money from the team that was offering the best contract. You also completely ignore the fact that he balled last year, except the last game.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

      And Albert likes him

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Whoever said he’s the first player to take money from the team? I don’t think he completely balled out. I will give him his due for playing tougher, but that’s about it. You should know by now I prefer to build our skill positions through the draft and allow them to grow in the system. Also I never liked Wallace & I hated BM when was brought in LOL. Team finds a way to bring in the WRs I despise the most. Maybe now that Ireland isn’t calling the shots we do this the right way. He picked up a great building block last year in Landry👍

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

My problem with Wallace isn’t that he chased the money it’s that I think he’s more worried about his numbers looking good just like Marshall was. If it was about being competitive and saying that he’s pissed because Tannehill’s a douche because Wallace is wide open and Tannehill isn’t seeing him and Wallace could have had 15 td’s instead of 10 I’d be pissed too but I don’t think that’s the case.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Exactly. Look at the last game of the season, Ryan takes like 3 consecutive illegal shots to the head, not called of course, immediately after the snap, still manages to throw a TD to Clay and Wallace had the nerve to complain. This is the same drive he stood and watched the Jets entire defense Butt Fuck Damian Williams out of bounds then walk away while Landry runs halfway across the field to defend him.

Believe me, I want to build through the draft too, and I hated that Ireland was a FA warrior. Too much of the talent he acquired was from FA. However, Wallace is here, he played well, and we will get cap crushed if we cut him. It just doesn’t pay, unless the coaches have just had enough and feel like they can’t work things out.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

We won’t get cap crushed, but just not getting a return on the money. Like I said yesterday that C-Bag Miko was saying back in November that Wallace didn’t want to come back. Then Barry Jackson had the report earlier this week saying Wallace told teammates that he doesn’t want to be back. He doesn’t want to be here, fuck him. Teammates saw him actively turn his back on them on the field of play against one of their bitter rivals. If the team brings him back they bring him back, but as of now I just don’t see a reconciliation in the future, but that’s just my opinion.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

They don’t have the balls to cut him loose because if the team goes 8-8 or worse this year they’re all out and we’re starting from scratch again. If anything, I would hope they find a way to get something for him from another team and draft another wide receiver. I’d be happy if we were to pick up two of the better receivers in the draft.

We’ll lose $7M in cap space. Wallace is due over $9.5M, and if we cut him, we only save $2.5M. That’s a bad deal right there.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Nobody wants to eat the cap space, but if it’s broken then it’s broke. Don’t make a bad situation even worse.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, but you’re just speculating, and injecting your personal feelings about the guy. We don’t know it’s broken at all. He’s still on the team as of now.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

It’s broken because we made bad deals re-signing guys to nice contracts who haven’t contributed much to the success of the team.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Well, Mike. We’re stuck because we can’t count on Hartline to deliver and we need Wallace’s numbers whether he’s a head case or not. But, I think if Hickey thinks he can bring in someone thru FA and TRADE Wallace he would take that route in a heartbeat. Demaryius Thomas, Torrey Smith and Randall Cobb are out there. 2 out of the 3 should be Dolphins players anyway but Jeffy fucked it up.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

Pointing out something that happened in the last game is pointless. Obviously his head wasn’t right that game, but that’s really all you got. He played hard, and you have to admit, he changed his gme completely to suit what they asked of him. He wasn’t used in a way that his talent is best used.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I also pointed out what was being said in November. Remember he threatened to pull himself from the Pats game 2wks prior to that if he didn’t get more targets. Yes he changed his game to do what Lazor needed him to do. Running deep is what he does best, but if you can’t get the protection then you need to adjust. Also when he came to Miami he said he wanted to regarded as an all around WR, well he got his wish this year. Like I said if he’s telling people he doesn’t want to be in Miami, then so be it.

    Mike,
I hate the guy, but I’m telling you what’s been reported that he’s told multiple people he wants out.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Lou – I’d be happy if we could trade Wallace and get some value for him. We’re not using him to his best abilities anyway, so that’s fine. I just don’t want to take the cap hit for nothing.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I know I’ll take a beating for this but while protection is part of the problem if your qb can’t get the ball to your best deep receiver accurately then, yes, you aren’t using him to the best of his abilities but you also CAN’T use him to the best of his abilities because your qb isn’t there yet. Tannehill had a good year but we’re coming up on year four and he needs to make the jump. Otherwise, no matter what we do it won’t be enough.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

No beating coming. The solace I do find is during the 2nd Pats game, outside the first 50yd completion, Tannehill was spot on with the deep throws. Perfect touch and arc dropping it in a bucket.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

he only completed 4 passes over 40 yds. Don’t know if it’s from less attempts or what

  28. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I heard Joe Rose say they can trade him with us eating SOME of the salary cap and the trade partner also paying some of the salary cap this way we save a little as compared to a lot. He mentioned we could also salvage a draft pick possibly.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

There’s really not much of anything that Ireland has done with this team in terms of talent that’s worked out that great. We have some steady players, solid guys but nothing that jumps out at you as being a game changer except for maybe the way Wake has played since he came here from Canada.
However, who else could you look at and say that Ireland killed it with that guy. Maybe Miller becomes that guy.

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Jetssuck
I think if we get a good trade offer we take it
For the reason you just mentioned

But I think a flat out cut doesn’t make sense
    Not this offseason anyway

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    jetssuck

As far as I know, the salary cap “sharing” can’t happen in the NFL. If we trade or cut Wallace, we take the full hit, there’s no provisions like they have in MLB where the other team can absorb some of the cap hit.

  31. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If we do move Wallace then a WR at 14 and a speedy receiver later is what I would want. It’s very likely Gibson and/or Matthews are gone too. Hartline probably gets asked to rework his deal for the cap.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Sounds like Hickey has been very hesitant to move Matthews.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Matthews hasn’t done anything so significant that he can’t be replaced. If he was showing more development over his three years with the team it would be different but even if we took White in the first and waited until later to take someone like Mayle or took a receiver 2nd and 5th I gotta believe our future at wr improves greatly.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

        I hope we keep him

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I don’t think it’s going to happen. IMO Hickey is going to find another wr who can give us better depth who can replace him.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

The problem with Matthews is apparently maturity. As Lou said we need to hit WR 2x’s preferably in the first 4 rounds. Work ethic and onfield IQ will probably the deciding factors…..which always leads me back to Justin Hardy as 1 of our targets. I’m still under the belief that we could possibly target3 WRs if the value is there. It’s a shame Montgomery is inconsistent w/ his hands as he moves well like Randall Cobb.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

        D,
I’d love if we were able to land Hardy. He would be a huge RZ threat and he fights for the ball.

DEF less attempts. You look at the last 3 games and he had 1 in each of those games. Wallace vs Pats, Clay vs Vikes, & Hartline vs the Jets I believe.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think we saw continued growth, w/ good coaching from Lazor, in the footwork and throwing mechanics this year. I think there’s still plenty of room for growth especially within this offense. I think major strides can be had with improved interior line play when we can play from u we center and have a true PA threat.

  33. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

In the several years I’ve been around these blogs, I’ve never touted one player or another, and if we do the prudent thing and build our lines or draft for value over need, ok, but I’m really hoping if we go weapon first, we spend it on Parker.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I wonder if Hickey would consider Parker or White considering we don’t employ the #1, #2 philosophy. If that’s the case, Hardy would be the better fit. C-USA or not you can’t ignore what he’s done in college; just like Lockett.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Hardy, Lockette, & Dorsett all have that team 1st mentality and high football IQ’s. I think Perriman falls in this group also. These are the types of players that you can blend with Landry, Simms and Clay to form a really deadly unit to attack defenses with.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I’ve pounded the table in the past for guys I wanted to see this team get only to see those players go elsewhere: Torrey Smith, Randall Cobb, LeVeon Bell, etc. I don’t have a first round favorite other than one of the three DTs I’ve been talking about and there are several receivers who we can pick from I would love to see here. The closest I’ll come to pounding the table this year is when it comes to Tomlinson.

JS is right that if we trade Wallace we will get some cap relief. That’s because he has guaranteed money left, we’d get credit for that if paid by another team.

Don’t think, but am not sure, you do if you outright cut a guy. Think in that case the guy collects all his guaranteed, it goes against your cap, and then he has an absolutely clean slate capwise on the new contract with the new team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Before he arrived our WRs were a mess, you don’t see in the stats what his speed does, so be careful what you wish for.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I ain’t wishing for it all. He spreads the D vertically even when they are not throwing his way. But if he does go really am hoping for it via trade rather an outright cut. Next year when he is threw his guarantees will be different.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Shelton gets held on every play and is still a beast. If I’m Tommy I wouldn’t want to have to face him twice a yr, then Buffalo twice a yr, you know Rexie will have something special for him, maybe even of the career ending variety.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really wonder if Shelton can be something special
I think he would be a really safe pick in terms of anchoring the line though

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We always talk about how clueless our GM is, no matter who he is, when they don’t pick the guy we know is going to be great. It’s not so easy, if you’ve ever coached a youth sports team that drafts it’s own players you know what I’m talking about. You may love this kid, but think you can get him in a later round, then he gets taken before you pick again, and that’s with 8 teams, I can’t imagine how hard it is with 32.

  39. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m almost 100% positive that when you trade a player in the NFL, you still eat the cap hit for the year you trade him, and no team can say they will absorb it for you, that’s against the NFL rules.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But when does that calendar year begin?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But that is about the timing of the hit. For sure you get the accelerated pro-ration of the signing bonus the year you cut him (so you are absolutely right on that part), but Wallace also has substantial unpaid guaranteed money. And that is different than in the typical situation. Almost nobody with that ever gets cut…….for the very same reasons I am hoping Joe and Wallace come to a peace agreement for next season.

But if he’s truly gonna be a top 10 pick, God help me if Hickey pulls a Jeffro and trades up to get him, ARGH!
If he’s @ #14, then heck yeah, consider taking him, or if he’s there @ #14, we might get a very good trade down heavily slanted our way, so there’s that to consider as well.

    ———————————————————————————————————————–
Interesting thought Joe Rose had. Maybe I got it wrong but he did say sharing the high contract with another team. Maybe he was talking about trade partner working on a new contract for wallace with new team and draft choice compensation or player from trade partner.

Mid round LG I’ve been tracking that would be hard pressed to pass on. I just found this too today now. We’d have 2 guys on our OL that had brothers also playing OL in the NFL.

TFY Draft Insider’s Tony Pauline reports that scouts praised Alabama redshirt senior OG Arie Kouandjio after Senior Bowl practices and “many feel he’s solidified his status as a middle-round choice.”
“Kouandjio battled hard during [last] Thursday’s practice and won out on just about every snap he took,” Pauline wrote. “He blocked with great fundamentals, showed a lot of strength in his game and controlled opponents on the line of scrimmage. Scouts praised Kouandjio after practice as many feel he’s solidified his status as a middle-round choice.” CBS Sports’ Dane Brugler is extremely high on Cyrus’ brother, believing the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Arie to have top-75 potential. The Crimson Tide prospect started every game at LG for Alabama the past two seasons.

Getting a guy the quality of Star at #14 is well worth the pick, IMO. Carolina’s run D has been elite when he’s healthy. Wish we would have taken him instead of Jordan and kept our 2nd round pick, but…. I’m rarely a fan of trading up unless there is a chance at a can’t miss (does that even exist?) or an absolute need. BPA is a good strategy for the most part. Look at Landry. We all thought the pick was a bit of a head scratcher since WR wasn’t a huge need, but that pick is looking genius about now.

That’s from over the cap. From what I can tell if we trade Wallace this year about $3 million of the cap hit we’d get would fall in that category. Yeah the pro-ration of the signing bonus would be twice that, but it is still someone of use to sign.

So Omar listed all the FAs Miami has signed over the last 7 years and I’m curious if any of you guys see a pattern with them. Here’s the list:

2007 – Feely, Hakim, Martin, Worrell.
2008 – Charlie Anderson, Crocker, Nate Jones, Mccown, Smiley, Starks, Torbor, Wilford
2009 – Grove, Berger, Eric Green, Gibril Wilson
2010 – Sign and trade for Marshall, Dansby, Incongnito
2011 – Bush sign and trade, Burnett, Moore, JT, Trusnik
2012 – Richard Marshall, Chad Johnson, Guyton, Hicks, Tyrell Johnson, Westerman, Legeduuuuu
2013 – Wallace, Ellerbe, Grimes, Keller, Wheeler, Gibson, Louis, Vaughn Martin
2014 – Albert, Shelley Smith, Mitchell, Moreno, Finnegan, Colledge, Satele, Delmas, Fox

So who was/is a success? What do you define as success?

  51. drg's avatar drg says:

    Pig,

Utah didn’t play Washington this year so I didn’t get a chance to see Shelton in person. All I know is that Star was elite. He tossed guys around, held up doubles, great hands, and decent speed for his size. Anytime you can pick a plug and play guy for the next 10 years in the first round I pull the trigger every time. Finding the elite stars is a total crapshoot, IMO. Gotta get lucky.

    Mike,

can’t find my old one so I just grabbed a random pic. Golf up in Canada near Banff. Love that place.

  53. drg's avatar drg says:

Looking at that FA list. The established elite were Wallace, Albert, Dansby, and Marshall. Character was a red flag for Marshall and that’s why we got him. That was a fail. Both Dansby and Wallace were slight character concerns, but mainly it came down to money. Albert was a little bit of money, but KC saw a chance to get a rookie to fill his spot and decided to spend the money elsewhere. Character wasn’t an issue. Albert seems to be the only one of the four that may end up being a good long term signing, but if injuries derail his career it will be somewhat of a fail as well.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

I should say that Dansby made a noticeable impact on our defense and ended up being a good signing. We just didn’t have the right coach to handle him. Wallace might be in that category too.

  54. drg's avatar drg says:

Wheeler and Ellerbe were both one season wonders that we overpaid by a ton. I think it’s fair to assume we need to avoid those type of FAs.

Griese told the Dolphins Wilson was, as one source put it, “far and away the second best quarterback prospect in the draft behind Andrew Luck.”

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Grove, Smiley, Bush, and maybe a couple others were injury risks. I don’t think we signed any of them to huge deals, so it wasn’t a crushing blow when they went down. That said, we didn’t have great alternatives to Grove or Smiley and when they did get injured it hurt OL play significantly.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

Grimes is the obvious one I left out. Maybe our biggest success in FA since 2007. Key thing with all these guys was signing them to a deal contingent upon being healthy and productive. Plus, don’t rely on them as a starter. Have backup plans in place.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

Starks too. I think the main goal in FA should be to sign guys coming off their rookie deals to reasonable contracts. If the market price is too high let them walk. If you’re worried about injuries or other red flags then sign them to a one or two year deal.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins were high on Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema before hiring Joe Philbin in 2012, but the sides disagreed on whether Russell Wilson could be an NFL starting quarterback.
This is an amazing story, and it’s a slow news week ahead of the Super Bowl, so we’ll shout it out. Per ace beat writer Armando Salguero, Dolphins owner Stephen was high on Bielema for the head-coaching job, but Bielema and the personnel department led by ex-GM Jeff Ireland hit a wall when Bielema suggested the Dolphins take Wilson in the second round of the 2012 draft. Bielema allegedly even promised the Dolphins a Super Bowl within five years if they take Wilson, who was Bielema’s quarterback at Wisconsin. Bielema pulled out of the running for the job over “personnel issues,” and the rest is history. Ireland took Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 overall pick, and Wilson went to Seattle in the third round. The Dolphins remain doormats, while Wilson is going to back-to-back Super Bowls.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I sure as hell hope we don’t draft a two down run stuffer at #14. I don’t think Shelton is physically gifted enough to dominate at the pro level, and I don’t see the value in taking a two down player at #14. And, if you look at his stats, he played his best early in the season and declined as it went along.

  74. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

A guy like Trae Waynes paired with Grimes could help the DL get many coverage sacks/QB pressures/hits.

Then TE Clive Walford gives us extra blocking, as well as seam threat, check down option, & red zone target.
Those two could be instant starters kinda like last years first 2 picks.

Then OT Ogbuehi would give us a nice OT for the future, long haul in case Albert gets hurt again and James kicks back to LTor gets too old on us, great depth and he has already played G as well.

Perriman is the big physical WR we can use. Tanny would have weapons all over the place with the future of Landry, Walford, Perriman, & Miller @ RB, driving DC’s nuts.

Anthony addresses a need @ ILB, should flourish by year 2 as could Jake Ryan @ OLB, very smart heady player with non-stop motor. Him and or Tripp would be the future in our LB corp.

Amos, could be a steal also @ FS, he has a nice long frame, nice bulk, good burst, and not afraid of sticking his head in to make big hits unlike Wilson, and experience as a CB too.

You guys crack me up. Like Mike Wallace is the first player to take the money from the team that was offering the best contract. You also completely ignore the fact that he balled last year, except the last game.
    ————————————
Wallace didnt “ball out” last year. He just played better than his pathetic first season. Balling out woulda been in the 1200-1500 receiving yard range and probably at least 2-3 more TD’s. He gave decent output for way more than decent money. Also to the assertation that he will cost us more if we cut him, thats ridiculous, he saves 2.5 mil no matter how ya structure it, he saves money. Dont cut him, he costs us the full 12mil, cut him and he only costs us 9.5….savings of 2.5mil. If you can get a guy to fill his spot for same or less, you haven’t lost anything. There ARE rookies that could give us the numbers he put up last year because some put up better than him last year.

Odell Beckham Jr had more TD’s and more yards than Wallace last year and he cost a whopping 1.7mil against cap. Randall Cobb more yards and td’s, 1mil against cap, deandre hopkins, more than 300 yards more receiving, though less TD’s, 1.7mil against the cap. Alshon Jeffery, same TD’s 300 more yards, 1.2mil. Mike Evans 250more yards and 2 more td’s 2.2mil, Kelvin Benjamin 150 more yards, 1 less TD, 1.4mil Brandon Lafell 100 more yards, 3 less TD, 2mil., Jordan Matthews roughly same yards, 1 less td, 900k…

Tats not a small list of guys who cost less than we save by cutting Wallace, don’t get me into how many receivers we as productive or more that cost less than his 12mil. No he didn’t “ball out” and its sad to think that we have accepted such poor play for him that we can be happy with what we got last year.

    • D's avatar D says:

My point in all of this isnt we can get those guys, hope that isnt the interpretation, my point is we can draft a guy and get that kind of production or potentially better at a WAY lower capt hit, and even this year save money doing it.

  84. drg's avatar drg says:

I’m not sure we need to give Tannehill too many more weapons. A red zone threat would be top my wish list. OL needs to be addressed. I’m pretty confident the offense can put up 23-25 ppg next season with or without Wallace, Hartline, and Clay. We moved the ball with scheme more than talent last season. Another year under Lazor and I expect Tannehill and many others to improve. If we fortify the OL that should improve our run and passing game.

I’m hoping this is a defense heavy draft for us. We don’t have an elite QB or offense, but I think we can develop an elite defense over the next couple of years if we make it a priority in the draft and FA. A defense that consistently limits teams to 20 or less ppg is our path to the playoffs now that the offense is finally coming around.

The WRs have been exceptional the past two drafts as far as immediate production, so there’s hope that drafting one early might replace Wallace, but no guarantee. Too bad we have to make a decision on Wallace before seeing if a good value WR falls to us in the draft.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D
Wallace put up decent numbers in this nickel and dime offense. He was still the best on this team, and if Tannehill had time, and the accuracy to hit Wallace deep, his numbers would have been what you set as the bar. He can only do what was dictated by this offense. the guy that benefits most from this offense is the slot receiver, because he’s up against the teams 3rd best CB, and he gets to run all the quick slants over the middle where the ball is out quickly. If our O-line isn’t nay better than this year, You can bring Devante Parker and he won’t do better than Wallace did last year, and maybe not as well.

  89. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I love Misi, but injuries seem to be a chronic problem and I’m not sold on him at MLB yet. SLB? Will the coaches finally move Jordan there? Who is our starting FS? Next year might be Grimes last, so who replaces him? The way both our DEs tailed off has me worried. We don’t have any proven answer at DT on the roster right now except Starks in the final year of his deal and he seemed to wear down last year. Slot? Wilson is nice, but not really elite at any specific position.

I see our defense trending down and would like to see us address it before it’s a major issue. Even if the offense improves this season and next we aren’t going to outscore teams if they put up 30 on us every week. I just don’t see Tannehill as that type of QB. Maybe I’m wrong, but we need a strong running game and a dominant defense to be a contender, IMO.

You see my draft and explanations of picks above? It addressed both Defense & giving Tanny more weapons, etc.
I was just responding to your assertion that we need to go mostly all Defense heavy in the draft and we can get by on offense without Wallace, Hartline, & Clay all in the same year.
I was like Oh hell No…lol

  92. drg's avatar drg says:

    Mike,

Agree with you about Wallace. I would prefer we invest in another position with our early picks this year unless there’s a great value or a guy the entire front office LOVES. We are paying Wallace. Freaking coach him up and get the best from him. That’s your job.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

The only problem with this theory is if he’s a problem child and isn’t coachable, it happens, then get him out of the locker room. It’s the same theory as its a teachers fault if a student isn’t doing their homework and is failing. You can teach your ass off and if that person wants nothing to do with that class you’re not going to force them to play along.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m with drg — why cut a guy when it will cost you more than if he was lining up? At that point you might as well bench him and hopes he comes around.

      • D's avatar D says:

Then you are saying we should keep hartline too then?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — I like Hartline, but if we keep him he’s on the field…..no attitude involved. And what we do with him starts with what we do with Wallace. Figure if Wallace goes he stays (even if we might play the renegotiate card)

Somebody is getting the blame. Might be the frick’n loose cannon ballboy……but pretty sure this will not come out as “nothing happened……move on.”

Which in itself is a problem….LOL, that damn rogue ball boy sabotaging the Pats dynasty.

Jordan Phillips is a behemoth, but also a project…he’s almost too tall, gets stood up and guys get around him in running lanes etc. Plus he’s already had surgery for back issues at his young age.
I love his size, and surprising quickness for now, but I’d be very cautious before I spend a 1st round pick on him…IMHO.
    __
Seriously? I’ve watched quite a bit of Jordan Phillips and I don’t see him getting stood up and guys getting around him in running lanes. Phillips is a 3-4 NT and if he’s taking on two blockers at a time he’s doing his job.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Agreed. Also athletic enough to drop into coverage.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think sometimes these reporters look at one video see something they dont like maybe the guard or center has an exception game and gets under him a few times that game and BOOM “he’s too tall gets stood up om plays”….yeah like 3 plays of one game terd lol.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That was my opinion, not a reporters, but again, it’s not all the time, and I thin the kid has a lot of potential, but I’m a lil uneasy to move too early on him as mentioned below.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ok, well see…I din’t say I don’t like him, or that he won’t become good, but I don’t see him as instant success as a rookie, hence my be cautious remark in drafting him @ #14 or even earlier if I was another team.

      • D's avatar D says:

I wouldnt draft him at 14 either, he would be a guy i would have my eyes on with a trade back though.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        Pretty much what we’ve said.

      • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

I don’t want to draft any of them at #14. I want to trade back before we take anybody. I still say Michael Bennett’s an option at DT even though his stock fell a little but it fell for NO reason. Just the predraft shuffle.
I’d be happy with at least three of these guys at the DT position; Brown, Phillips or Bennett. Thing about Phillips is he’s a 3-4 NT in college playing the DT position and for how well he did at the NT position he will do better in the 4-3 just like Mitchell and just like DBolt said he’s pretty athletic and moves well for his size. He’s a sideline to sideline guy as a DT.
